Last year Beau Bartlett was one finished double leg away from being a National Champion.  Instead Jesse Mendez, to his credit, executed an incredible counter and now he is the reigning 133 pound champ.

This year, Bartlett has not one, but two reigning 133 pound NCAA champs in his bracket in Alirez and Mendez.  Further, Mendez beat him soundly at the All-Star Classic and seems to have separated himself from Bartlett.

Beau is awesome, but did he really blow his best shot at a title last year?  I have a hard time seeing him taking out both Alirez and Mendez.

I'll bet you any amount of money you want that neither Bartlett, Mendez nor Alirez win 133 this year. Name your price.

And how do you have a two reigning champions in a single weight division??

Well Alirez won two years ago and then took a Olympic redshirt. Nobody dethroned him.  And Mendez won last year. So that's how.

Mendez is the reigning (defending) champion and Alirez is a returning champ.

Craig Henning got screwed in the 2007 NCAA Finals.

A lot can happen between now and March. Predetermined matchups at NCAAs rarely happen. The brackets are filled with landmines. Bartlett could win NCAAs without having to beat either of these guys. Mendez sure looks dominant right now, but its December.

With that logic I guess Nick Lee is a reigning 141 champion too.

Bartlett can definitely win it.

He has at least two more shots at Mendez, probably three.  There are a lot of adjustments that both guys can make.  Even if Mendez has inched ahead of him, which I would agree with, Bartlett just has to win the match that counts.  And that's ignoring scenarios in which somebody else (e.g. Alirez) knocks off Mendez at NCAAs.

As others mentioned, it's a long season.  Not everyone enters March at the top of their game, for a variety of reasons.

The problem is Bartlett can't take Mendez down.  I don't think he has ever taken him down.

His only TD came out of a scramble in OT at the dual last year.  If he's going to beat Mendez again that's probably how it will look.

If he somehow regained eligibility and could wrestle in college again, then yes.

Are you really arguing over the use of the word reigning in this context?  If so, then how about "former champ"?

Come on ladies and gentlemen, stop engaging with this poster already.  It's time, let's all stop...

They don't actually believe anything they are saying, just put them on ignore.
