UWW cares enough to share. Why doesn't the IOC?

Recommended Posts

Perhaps someone can clarify this. It seems that United World Wrestling controls the video rights for World's for a very short time and then allows the matches, in high quality video format, to be posted on YouTube. This is fan-friendly for those of us who do not pay for expensive packages to watch matches real time. What about the IOC? Why aren't the Olympic finals in senior men's freestyle on YouTube yet? What is the benefit to the IOC of keeping those matches, now held over two months ago, from public consumption?

Any insights would be welcome.

I don't think it is the IOC as much as it is the USOC and NBC deals.  When we hold olympic trials, USAWrestling has to operate, in the relative aspects, the same as if it were the Olympic Games, because the trials are part of the olympic process.  I believe of anyone this would fall on NBC.

Even worse, it is my understanding that the IOC has youtube accounts (at least for some sports) with the coverage on it, but access is extremely restricted.  Athletes cannot even see their own competitions.  I have heard Judo players complain about this.

I assume they want to monetize the long tail. People had the same complaint about Flo. Flo used to put all of its videos behind a paywall for a couple of weeks, then release them later on YouTube as "free" (YouTube vids are still monetized, but it doesn't cost the viewer anything) content. BTN was also did the same, I think now they just release select matches onto YouTube. Although BTN usually releases their videos in a day or two rather than weeks.

Most of the Olympic content, including wrestling, is still viewable on Peacock. It's hard to imagine NBC releasing much of that content for free on YouTube at the same time.
