This is funny to me:

We sent Sina Khalili and Ebrahimzadeh to the Hungary ranking tournament yesterday at 70kg to help determine to world team member. Khalili won bronze and Ebrahimzadeh came 5th.

So who made the world team at 70?

Amir Yazdani!

Lol. Yes, despite not wrestling at 70 the entire year he is officially the world team member. They tried a few guys at 70kg like Khalili, Amouzad's twin brother and Ebrahimzadeh but none of them impressed.

And to be honest I can't blame the coaches. Our other 70 guys are simply not at the level to win a medal, there was no point having Yazdani sit out after a close but failed attempt to make the team at 74.

So the world team so far:

57 - Momeni

61 - Javan

65 - Amouzad

70 - Yazdani

74 - Emami

79 - to be determined, almost certainly will be Nokhodi

86 - Ghasempour

92 - Firouzpour

97 - Azarpira

125 - Zare

I thought Yazdani won the spot at 74 KG earlier this year?

No, he won the Takhti tournament and beat Emami in the finals. All the notable 74 guys were there but the coaches wanted to send them to a international tournament and this time Yazdani ended up losing to Emami in a close match in the finals. Probably would have been fair to setup a wrestle off between them but the coaches love Emami so they gave him the spot at 74. None of them could medal at 74 anyway so Yaz is probably better off at 70 if he can still make it.

It seems strange to me why at 55 and 63kg greco we kept flip flopping between guys and now at 70kg freestyle we also decided to do the same as well. In saying that Amir Mohammad Yazdani is the best 70kg in Iran as his floor is a lot better than the other guys even if his ceiling is not as good. So the coaches choosing him is not actually that ridiculous. What is bizarre is at 55kg greco where neither Dadmarz nor Shamsipour made the team and its instead Payam Ahmadi the guy who just won u20 Asians. I feel like our coaches are trying to reinvent the wheel with our selections at times. Either the guy that won the selection the first time should be the rep or don't hold selections with such promises. What benefit does it provide Keshtkar at 63 if he made the team, lost the spot and then just made the team again with less than 2 months until worlds. It's only setting them up for failure.

We all know Amir M. Yazdani has been super inconsistent. There’s just no real progress in his performance. Khalili, on the other hand, could’ve gained some valuable experience. Plus, he’s already beaten Yazdani before at this same weight.

Sina  Khalili also seems to have been inconsistent. He is young though and I think has a great future. To be honest if we take consistency as someone who medals every year at the world level in the past 5-10 years in freestyle we have had only 2 ( Hassan Y. And Zare). Others even Ghassempour  or Amouzad will be considered inconsistent by that definition. But I think having someone that medals every year for more than five years or so coming along about once every 5-10 years is about as much as we can expect for Iranian freestyle wrestling. I think this is where Iran as at. Given the presence of Russia Japan USA Cuba and the central Asian republics realistically we can not expect more.

Feels like a team that could win 8 medals. I do not think Emami or Momeni will medal but Emami certainly has a chance and while I am 50/50 on Javan I think odds would point to either him or Emami medaling.

Iran vs USA

57 - Momeni vs Lee- Lee favored

61 - Javan vs Jax- No idea

65 - Amouzad vs Woods- Amouzad

70 - Yazdani vs Duke- No idea

74 - Emami vs Carr- Carr

79 - to be determined, almost certainly will be Nokhodi vs Haines- Whoever Iran Sends (Nokhodi)

86 - Ghasempour vs Zahid- Should be close

92 - Firouzpour vs Hidlay- Another close one

97 - Azarpira vs Snyder- They were close last time they wrestled

125 - Zare vs Wyatt- Zare

Iran is the more proven team and has more sure things, but if Jax and PJ are legit on the world stage that would make a major difference. Also from 86-97 both teams are STACKED.
