That's from asian champs last month

Oops, thanks for correcting me.  I have no idea why that was in my Instagram feed today

Yones Emami beats Yazdani 4 - 3 to make the world team.

I was really hoping AM Yazdani would have made the world team but it looks like it wasn't meant to be. I don't really know why we struggle so much to find a proper 74kg rep. Emami is going to lose badly at worlds this year.

Since moving up from 67kg he has looked really solid. I hope he ends up winning a medal this year at worlds but from memory 72kg is surprisingly quite stacked with a lot of contenders. Him and Firouzpour are really the only two I can think of that have stepped up from the recent crop of U23s (apart from Masoumi) into the senior level.

There are rumors that Massoumi is being recruited by Armenia.

He added fuel to the fire by posting the flag of Armenia in his social media account.

Would make a lot of sense...

Does Armenia even recruit foreign wrestlers? Off the top of my head all their guys are home grown. I don't think they pay their medalists well either. I would guess Masoumi will wrestle for another country, but I don't think it will be Armenia.

They used to. a few famous Russians wrestled for Armenia in late years in their careers.

Khadzhimurad Gatsalov and Georgy Ketoev did.

Armenia's last medalist at heavyweight is also an import - Levan Berianidze, a Georgian. Bronze in 2017 world. I think he's retired now as he probably weights way something closer to 150 kg or more.

But, I can see a problem if the very tall, very young Taz fills out a bit more.

Good point. It’s is getting more complicated..

You raise an excellent point.  Financially Qatar or Bahrain would be the best choices

so far, there are no rumors of those countries recruiting him.  Only Armenia and Azerbaijan

the nice thing about Armenia is that he could change his name to Massoumian and fit it nicely 😀

Azerbaijan are one the biggest mercenary teams around. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up there.

Also there would be less chance of a backlash for him Bulgarian style

Hasn't that all turned out to be noise and meaningless grandstanding? The flo people seem very sure that the 86 kg transfer will continue competing. Bulgaria have been like this for 30 years, it's not going to be easy to change.

Bulgaria is also an extreme case of going from the second best greco nation in the world, to a complete paper tiger that only stays afloat by buying wrestlers from foreign countries. I don't think Armenia has that freestyle wrestling tradition. They didn't even send anyone to 125kg at 2023 worlds.

Yes- All the noise about foreign wrestlers  taking the places for indigenous athletes,  coming from Bulgaria does seem to have gone quiet which is understandable. If you have some  current  reigning Olympic champions albeit trained elsewhere, it  makes much sense to let them get on with it specially if the ranks of home grown talent are not at the same level. Although in the long run it will make it more difficult to recruit others.... but perhaps that was the point.
