I think removing gable from the convo they are the two best heavyweights in the world. Masoumi has killed mason twice and mason is top 7 or so in the world.

Did Gable Steveson not lose  to a compatriot -Wyatt Hendrickson-recently? Is he still expected to be able to compete internationally for medals not having done anything internationally or created a track record in  international tournaments for what 3-4 years?

I want to say this without it seeming like I am taking away from Wyatts win. I think Wyatt can compete for medals on the senior level however I do not think he can compete with either Iranian. As for gable if they wrestled that match 10 times I would expect Gable to win 9 of them.

I guess the problem may be when Gable had the chance to come and defend his Olympic title( perhaps 2-3 times?) he didn’t take that chance. Presumably it’s fair enough to suggest that you got to actually come out and compete if you want to be considered a contender.

Gable seems to have backed out of coming back to do that but I’m sure we can say 9 out 10 years he will have come out and show what he is made of internationally but there were mitigating circumstances …

sorry I was not insinuating that gable would beat zare or masoumi 9 out of 10 times especially not now perhaps if he never took time off the sport. I meant the bout with Wyatt I feel he would win the vast majority of the time. I think wyatt is a good option for the united states he even does some things gable does not like he has a really good high gut and normal gut but I do not think he can contend with Masoumi or Zare right now.

I guess Mason Paris, Wyatt Hendrickson and Gable are all on the right side of 25 and I am confident they will all be in a position to give Zare and Masoumi or any other talented new comer, and  not to mention Geno a run for their money. Gable certainly is a great talent and if he now decides he wants to take his rightful place as a HW wrestler internationally we would be having a different discussion and the 9 out of 10 prediction may still come to pass ( although I get it that you meant this in the context of encounters between Wyatt and Gable).

The list of athletes for the Ulaanbaatar Open has come out. Iran has sent some guys in both FS and GR.

70kg: Mohammad Ali Amouzad and Aliakbar Fazli

74kg: Hossein Abouzari, Amir Mohammad Yazdani and Younes Emami

79kg: Fariborz Babaei

97kg: Ahmad Bazri

55kg: Pouya Dadmarz and Armin Shamsipour

60: Ali Ahmadi Vafa

63: Mohammad Keshtkar

67: Gholamreza Abdevali, Mohammad Reza Gholami and Mohammad Mehdi Gholampour

72: Danial Sohrabi

77: Alireza Abdevali and Ahoura Bouveiri Piani

82: Ghloamreza Farrokhi, Mohammad Ali Geraei and Mohammad Naghousi

87: Alireza Mohmedi

97: Alireza Mirzajani, Amir Hossein Moradiyan and Mohammad Seydi Avendi

130: Amir Hossein Abdevali and Morteza Alghosi

I'm not sure why we didn't send more FS guys considering greco sent guys in all weights. Its nice to see new faces in the greco scene (I think they are prepping the junior guys) whilst our freestyle coaches are being incredibly opaque with how the selection process is.

Ghasempour beats Rahmani 3‌-  1 and makes the world team at 86kg. A good match. It had a weight allowance, though.

+2 or more?

Ghasempour may be really ghassed at 86 scratch weight. I think these wrestle-offs must happen at scratch as well...

Has Rahmani made strides since the ranking series? I know he looked great at Asians, his recent results have given me some hope Zahid coudl win the entire thing. However, it also makes me worry Kadiev may dominate for the next cycle.

I think Rahmani went straight from cadets to seniors and did well winning the Asians continental championship as an 18 year old only a month ago against a bunch of seasoned seniors . Whatever hopes you have for Zahid probably comes from another sources  unrelated to Rahmanis progress in the course of a month or two as an 18 year old although that would seem to be acceptable to his fans regardless. Ghassempour has beaten Kadiev in Russia recently with refereeing very much tipped in Kadiev favour in his own home turf but I guess he will no doubt will be a contender in the coming cycle. Has Kadiev got any major senior wins? If I recall correctly he did not compete for Russia in the recent European championship ?

Zahid beat Rahmani at the ranking series, thats where my hope comes from. I am not sure about Kadievs senior level accolades at 86kg. He did win russian nationals at 79kg.

edit he also won russian nats at 86kg. He beat Bagaev who some people feel got hosed against Sadulaev and Usmanov.

Valencia beat an 18 year old just from cadets. I see you are really grasping at straws. I guess Zahid Valencia has not given you a great deal over the years . If you want to feel elated over meagre pickings who am I to stop you. Enjoy 😉

he beat an 18-year-old by a greater margin than the guy who will be Iran's rep this year? That is what I am getting at. Also, odds are he actually beat a 22-year-old given Iran's reputation. I am not sure why you got so bent out of shape I was originally asking if Rahmani has gotten better since that match because his results would indicate he has.

It’s a tired cliche to suggest if someone is doing well it is because they are cheating. I doubt that you would be able to provide any evidence to back that up but please feel free to do this if you can.

He made a lot of progress. He was second in Asian juniors last year and won asian seniors this year. He is on an upward path. I think we will see him at junior worlds again in a few months.

86 this year depends a lot on how Ghasempour looks after actually making 86kg.

Its really hard for me to imagine him making 86 two days in a row and being functional but if he can hes a world champ in my opinion. I do not think zahid can beat his hips perhaps he could hit a duck or two but I think Ghasempours high c kinda lights Zahid up.

We will see. From interviews I have read it seems the coaches more convinced him to come to 86 while he would have preferred to stay at 92.

Iranian friends: please help with questions about Hassan Yazdani Charati's name.  Recently I have read him referred as "Charati" as if that were his surname.  I have heard that Charati is an indicator of the geographic ares he is from.  Is the proper way to ref to him "Yazdani", just as we call Kyle Dake "Dake"?

I can think of Spanish naming customs where they have an additional surname that is rarely used.  For instance, Yoel Romero Palacio is almost always just called "Yoel Romero."

Thanks in advance!

Yes, Hassan Yazdani is technically correct. Cherat is a place in Mazandaran that I believe his parents or grandparents are from and it would not really be used when referring to him in Iran. But I do think it's cool that @Husker_Du calls him Cherati, lol.
