Can his frame handle it?

Has he been cutting a fair amount of weight to make 174? If so, maybe this jump makes sense.

If he wrestles 197 and doesn't win - will it tarnish his reputation?

Yes.  4/5 < 4/4. But if he wins he has a record that will never be broken.

He may well thrive at 197. He can eat as much as he wants and feel as strong as a horse at that weight. It could cost him some quickness if he adds too much fat (or too much muscle!).

If he loses next year he’s still a four timer, and will be placed with four timers. If he wins next year he’s the only five timer. Either way people will talk about him for a long time.
