I have always thought "coach of the year" is one of the dumbest awards, regardless of the sport.   IMO the coach of the year is always the coach who won the championship because he recruited/developed and then coached up his/her team to the best.  

To give it to the coach who finished 8th but everyone thought would finish 20th seems like a petty award.  " even thought 7 other teams beat you, congrats on not being as crappy as we thought"
