what makes greco different?

it is the most pure expression of what wrestling was designed to be...

a way to train without killing each other... period

there were no double legs or low singles or bouncing around the outside on the battle fields... try that shit and you got stuck with sharp pointy sticks until you were dead...

is it hyperbolic?

yes...

is it a bit pretentious?

yes...

but, i look at the world and this society a bit differently... what is important to the vast majority of people (particulalry) in this country means absolutely nothing to me...

normals scoff at that and i get it... whatever...

people used to get so annoyed at me when i would say with the utmost confidence that D1 wrestling was a back up plan because it was... it has proven to be... both meatheads had multiple D1 offers and both ultimately decided greco is just better... they literally can not stand to watch leg grabbing...

Otto spent 5 months at Iowa... max spent about a month in that room... i am truly grateful for that experience because they will never have to wonder what if?

nothing worse than regret...

in a ton of countries not burdened by the social norms of America they still view wrestling similar to how i do...

and i fully understand that lots of normals who have not experienced international wrestling just can not comprehend that anyone outside of their little circles could possibly think differently than they do, so, when i say greco is more popular and more competitive worldwide they just simply can not fathom others see it differently than how it is viewed at the Owasso open...

anyone can simply look at results and logically see that greco is wildly more competitive than free...

it is not even debatable even though people in this country will die on a hill and never even experience actual high level greco...

it is full of straight killers that want to stand there and figure it out and not just try to bounce around and look for their opponent to fall for some feint so they can dive in on legs...

i can not tell you how many leg grabbers have personally told me that greco guys "scare" them...

do they actually "scare" them?

no... it is metaphorical...

are they a little bit scared?

absolutely...

any nerd can listen to interview after interview of legitimate wrestlers who have rolled with high level greco guys and they all say the exact same thing... that dude is crazy...

it is across the board...

again, whatever...

all that to say, i will say that as wrestling gets more exposure and you have american media outlets that "promote" the sport in an entirely different way that free has started to eclipse greco internationally and a lot of that has to do with entities like Flo who are totally ignorant and literally refuse to give greco any support on their platform...

anyone who thinks that does not have an impact in today's world is kidding themselves...

whatever...

nobody who chooses greco in this country is unaware of the realities of what and where they have placed themselves...

it just is...

as far as MMA...

Couture, Lindland, Hendo, Uncle Chael... all greco guys and all made their mark in MMA at a very high level... i am sure there are some i am forgetting or are just not aware of...

in today's landscape, the only legitimate greco i know who went into MMA after retiring was Mark Madsen... he made it to the UFC and went 4-2 before retiring...

he was 35 and already had an amazing international career before ever stepping foot into the octagon...

the fact of the matter is high level wrestlers are simply not forced to resort to fighting anymore to make a living and most do not...

it really is that simple...

and with today's MMA culture where every backwards hat meathead fan boos the moment the action gets taken to the ground, greco guys would very conceivably do very well just purely based on the posture they are extremely comfortable in and the lifetime of in your face combat they chose...

there is simply not enough that choose to do it to make any real argument one way or the other about what is better for MMA...

SOT heavily pushed the olympic styles and actual greco technique was introduced...

otto was 100% all in and wanted to quit folk immediately as a 10 year old...

backing up backing up backing up... running to the edge for safety... it was incredibly frustrating to him...

i agreed, but, he was just too small in this country to specialize becaus ther simply wasn't enough greco to do it year round...

i dove into the sport because it was simply the truest expression left at what wrestling started as... we had Lindland in our room showing technique... Provisor was a friend of the club and was in all the time... i just connected with the greco guys way more than anyone else... none of them fit into the little box this society just can not stand if you stray out of...

they are all a little off and that is the way i like people i associate with...

none of this talk about wrestling to go to college... bleh

i went to college... both of my parents had degrees... i was not impressed with what the system had/has become... i always preached to the meatheads do not wrestle because you think you will get a scholarship... with what i spend on you guys traveling all over the country i could easily not spend and any college you wanted to go to would be easily paid for...

wrestle because you love it... nothing more... this sport is too demanding to do it because you do not love it...

all you nerds always love to lump me into some typical "little league" mentality and it just could not be further from the truth... i came from a sport where we buried people... in 2010 we buried 4 kids under the age of 16 in this country and we all had some connection to them... losing a wrestling macth meant nothing to me...

but effort and passion is everything... you do your part and i will literally do everything in my power to make sure i never have say you can't go to this tourney or that trip overseas is just not in the budget...

whatever...

lots of things happened... none of them worth bringing up on a public forum... fast forward to both boys having made 12 world teams... both having international senior gold medals... and both still fully committed to LA in 2028...

personally, i already won...

Good stories! This is the stuff I like!

@SweetButteryLou this has been a long diatribe that i do not expect for too many to actually sift through and the majority of those who do i do not expect it to make any impact at how i am viewed at all...

i am totally ok with it...

the fact of the matter is that nobody's opinion of me on this silly forum has even a marginal impact on my life or either of my son's path...

not one little iota...

i am not anonymous... i have never been anonymous... and in my world i simply can not understand why anyone would be scared to be who they are... it just simply makes no sense to me...

if i answered some questions you had great...

if you have any more questions i am open...

will the anonymous forum nerds continue doing what they do?

Your kids chose a dying sport, will exit college with worthless and/or no degress, and won't be able to coach since no one wants to learn Greco

What is their game plan for life exactly after the 2028 Olympics? MMA? Power Slap?

To be fair, if they wrestle in LA they most likely lived and will continue to live a pretty amazing life.  Pretty amazing accomplishments.

You doubled down on Lucas Steldt's comparison of Greco wrestlers with jews who died in the Holocaust

The same Lucas Steldt who runs a bullshit news website to write puff pieces that make Greco seem more important than it is:

WHOA: Otto Black to NMU, Leaving Folkstyle for Greco

I just want to hear you admit everyone in the Greco community is some degree of unstable

the simple fact of the matter is they were not raised to make the "safe" choice that aligns with the normals way of thinking...

and do not think that has not caused some consternation between our inner circle...

they were raised to chase their dreams until they simply are not capable anymore...

period...

DC:  cadet world greco bronze was his first international medal.  He was never afraid of upper body positions in freestyle either!

Sons of Thunder academy...

they terrorized the youth scene back in the day...

originally ran by a total psycho...

we would pack 30 kids and x number of adults/coaches and drive for 30 hours straight in the battle bus to whatever tourney and show up as the freakshow...

had a ton of fun... can not even begin to talk publicly about some it...

ended predictably bad... i have made my peace with some of the things that went on for the most part...

crazy days...

Okay so getting back to @SweetButteryLou’s original question…

I do truly appreciate the story, but I don’t think you included much that was answering the original question, at least as far as what makes Greco in particular the best.  You did talk about the MMA piece, and you did list examples of why “the international styles” are better than folk, but I don’t feel like you gave much evidence of why Greco is better than free.  I clipped above what are IMO the main arguments I saw:

1) a way to train without killing each other.

uh, I feel like this could be interpreted as trying to take the easy route in training (which could kinda coincide with the theory about guys going Greco  later because they think it’s an easier path to a world team - not saying your kids did this).

2) Greco guys are “off”/different/crazy

You also talk a lot here about how YOU connected with it, which isn’t really helping the “living vicariously” accusations IMO…

greco is what wrestling was originally designed to be... the absolute purest expression of it... leg grabbing gets you killed on the battlefield...

it is just a more masculine sport... period

what more do you all want?

you don't agree?

ok...

so what?

i am not creating threads asking why anyone prefers leg grabbing...

i know why...

it is all most were ever exposed to in this country and average people always go to DIFFERENT = BAD!!!

seriously, why you all are so concerned with me is adorable...

Explain…I mean is this a scenario where you try to shoot a double leg on a guy holding a gun?

why bother?

it won't make any difference to you and you will still just keep coming back with, "well, what if..."

it will never end...

just ask yourself one question, how many guns were around when wrestling was used as a training method for soldiers?

fukn hell...

I’m just trying to think of how Greco would be better “on the battlefield.”  I’d think eliminating half of the body as an option to attack would be a negative.

Of course IMO folk would be the best style “for the battlefield,” since you need to demonstrate control and I’m not sure how rolling over a bunch of times would be that advantageous on the battlefield
