Once a path reserved for the most extreme sports families in the 1980s and ‘90s, hundreds in New Jersey are now paying for their children to spend an extra year developing their bodies and brands in warehouse gyms and strip-mall storefronts.

Santino Rodriguez, a Don Bosco senior wrestler, claimed an individual state title in March at 175 pounds. Rodriguez, who reclassified at Scorpions of Fairfield, noted the benefits.

“When you’re wrestling six hours a day, that definitely helps,” says Rodriguez, who will wrestle at Cornell next. “You do that for eight months, every single day, you’re going to jump levels when everybody else is learning, like, Algebra and English.”

I’m not holding my kids back for any sport…ever. If anything we should be encouraging them to complete school early. Always thought this crossed an already thin line between being extremely involved in something and having some mental health issues…

i love how they spin it "reclassifying"

they  are being left back

they  are repeating a grade

now if this is done for academic reason zero issue at all

when done Soley for athletic reason's its certainly a thin line / one I would not cross with my own kids who were both honor roll students and received athletic and academic $ when they attended  college
