Watching the Wyatt montage on YouTube, the foreign commentator asks about how switching from collegiate to international is a challenge… it shouldn’t be. Making excuses for folkstyle in high school and college is lazy. It’s lazy by the adults who’ve had their time at the detriment of our children. Learn freestyle and Greco and teach it. The adults make decisions, not the kids. We adults keep saying folkstyle matters. It doesn’t matter any more than the random wrestling match in the sand in the middle of Africa where the guy who gets pushed outside of the rope has to have his arm cut off by a machete.. that’s folkstyle to them. We just don’t make losing have such a consequence… so it matters even less.

So glad the FILA days are behind us. By this point they would’ve, mid-tournament, instituted three allowable 60-second time-outs and some other shit to put the US at a disadvantage. Wrestling getting cut from the Olympics was the best thing to ever happen.

2008 was still just a throwdown… the guys who drove forklifts in the day and won bar shows at night moved up and the the better forklift driver became champ. I trained with, coached and cornered a bunch of guys in that time, from bar shows to Bellator. You can never say the greats like GSP or Anderson wouldn’t be as good today, because, if they had the training, support and incentives of today’s guys, they’d make their alternate reality selves look terrible.

I get that swimming is popular in the Olympics, even if it’s a somewhat forced popularity. The only way someone should be able to win 23 Olympic Golds is if they have a bite mark on their neck and can’t be in the sunlight.

It was definitely tough to get consistent Greco training in the late 90s/early 2000’s, and that was even with having Fargo double champs/AAs at my local club. I think I’m a bit of an enigma as I was a leg rider in folkstyle, but I was bigger on front headlocks/ throws/ beating the hell out of people with heavy hands and underhooks from neutral. In the offseason, I loved Greco. I preferred it. I knew it made me better at what I did “in season” and started to think why not make Greco my in season. As a junior, going through the recruiting process, I was between going to the Marines or going to the UP (pretty much brand new at the time) to go Greco full-time after HS, but an injury setback led to a girl that led to wrestling in college. Such is life.

I think the reason for fewer wrestling UFC champs as of late is because there are “potential” UFC champs making a living through wrestling and don’t feel “forced” into MMA. You have head wrestling coaches making what football coaches used to make and assistants making more than their university president, as well as athletes being paid to wrestle. I’d take $100k to wrestle over $200k to get punched in the face…. After spending a few years getting punched in the face for $30k.

There’s no doubt God gave Snyder a QV to teach him something new before this Worlds… probably didn’t charge him $160, either.

Those were fanboy odds… but I think if JB wants to make the 2028 team, he will. It’s a good story and will draw views.

Bono isn’t in the hot seat. Wisconsin is trying to right the football ship, and, as long as minor programs don’t have controversy or make demands, the coaches are safe. The Badgers have quite a few academic Big Ten and AA’s each year, which means more than Big 10 champs and AA’s to the administration. Barry always put solid teams on the mat, but, more than anything, Barry wasn’t needy. He took what he was given, didn’t complain and made the most of it while following the rules. I think Bono knows he needs to do the same if he wants job security (but not necessarily “success”).

Professional pillow fighting popped up on the Ocho while visiting my grandpa in the hospital. He’s 88 and just had a stroke and heart attack, and his comment was, “If you don’t change the channel, I’d rather just die.”

One of my best friends is an Indian immigrant who owns a dozen or so gas stations and other businesses (tobacco and kratom… they know their customers). He has another cousin or nephew showing up every week to work 18-hour shifts. If you really care about people, you’d be against this exploitative immigration.
