It's an antiquated style that has difficulty recruiting kids at a young age to get into. They all want to wrestle freestyle, that's what the clubs and such focus on.

if by antiquated you mean entirely representative of what wrestling actually began as, then yes...

dive in on the legs on the battle field and you got quickly dispatched with sharp pointy objects and immediately dismissed...

  2. was chatting with a buddy couple of days ago and brought up a great point...

girls are starting to wrestle greco at the state level now...

if this continues it might be the thing that saves greco in america...

what they have done for exposure to wrestling in general has been amazing the last few years...

USAW has ridden that wave and perhaps they will be forced to acknowledge greco if the girls start giving it the attention it deserves...

  3. there is absolutely no support in this country for greco...

our national organization treats it like a red headed step child...

our "refs" refuse to learn it and do their jobs properly...

our wrestling publications totally ignore it...

our "fans" talk mad shit on it while knowing nothing about it...

and kids are scared to even try it because of fear and ignorance propagated by their coaches and parents...

    but...

if your opponent running away from you makes you want to punch a baby?

if you love to get physical and fight it out mano a mano?

if hearing the crowd go DAAAAAAAMMMMMMNNNNN!!!! blows up your skirt?

there is little better in the wrestling world...

@LJB I generally agree with you that Greco is just not well understood and very under appreciated for its nuances and complexity in this country.

But I probably differ in that most high level Greco guys will get schooled in Freestyle in the same way you describe Freestyle guys getting schooled in Greco.

You might say that the physicality and brutality of Greco is at another level, but there is a trade off. There are so many more ways to get exposure in freestyle. It emphasizes a different skill set. They are simply different sports. Not an apples to apples comparison.

    100%

which is why you will never hear me say a high level Greco guy could just stroll into the women’s style and win…

they are 100% different sports and one is not inherently superior to the other…

I know you are much more of an expert on the subject than I am but I see nothing about Bo's style that is a stall fest.    I'm curious to see how often he was called for stalling in his career.   I think his upper body skillset translates well to Greco.  Dake as well.

Also,  Bilyal MAKHOV was a three time world champ in Freestyle and was the top ranked Russian  and their greco worlds rep. once or twice in the past decade.    What makes him so much different than someone like Gable who is a freak athlete with an exceptionally high wrestling IQ?

    Ugh…

    read what I wrote…

    bo did not stall…

he excelled by being improvisational in the stall fest style…

Because he does more than just “grab legs” - I would agree because of that I’m skeptical Steveson would

He was too wild and improvisational in the stall fest style to be effective in high level Greco…

we are talking millimeters of space in high level international Greco…

not to say he could not have been successful had he chosen it… just that just because he was not a boring folk style wrestler does not equal Greco success…

Would it not be interesting to witness?   Maybe he would flop.  Maybe not.   It would be interesting to see.    I agree GR has different skill sets.  But he may be able to do both, others have in the past.

    mspart

    So…

you think just because he is the best in the world at the women’s style he would automatically rule Greco?

    that’s all I am hearing…

You should really watch more international Greco…

it is not what you have been told it is…

What is it about the CDC, NYT, CNN, and NIDA that is not true?  You seem to be saying there is a difference between physical addiction and addiction.  Please share because I cannot square your declarative statements with those of CDC and NIDA.

    mspart

Think back to what the CDC said about the boogie bug…

    weed is not physically addictive…

neither are cheeseburgers but we still have a ton of fat people…

You mentioned Provisor mauling the field up a weight in Freestyle.  Accordingly, If your kid being a greco specialist beat Gilman easily in Par Terre "practice" . Gilman who is obviously our World Team Rep. with several medals.   Is your son competative in Freestyle?    I know he is a monster in Greco.

My oldest went to Fargo twice… lost one year to suspension from COUSAW and another to the boogie bug… has 2 smaller stop signs AAing in the women’s style and one big one winning Greco…

my younger quit all leg grabbing as a freshmen after being a state finalist, but, 4 months after went 17-0 at junior duals wrestling up still a cadet… after a year and a half of absolutely no leg grabbing he didn’t do as well when forced to wrestle the women’s style when a kid didn’t show up…

he did convinced to show up for state his sophomore year to fill a hole after blowing out his knee training Greco full time… 8 weeks on the couch then 3 weeks to lose 25+lbs of shit weight for state… took 4th…

they were both succesful in all 3 styles coming up as youths… younger placed at Tulsa last 5Xs he went… several times in the finals all at his walk around…

older 4X state placer all as a problem child… won preseason or postseason nationals once…

    they just prefer Greco…

You might want to rethink that.

    https://nida.nih.gov/publications/research-reports/marijuana/marijuana-addictive

Marijuana use can lead to the development of problem use, known as a marijuana use disorder, which takes the form of addiction in severe cases. Recent data suggest that 30% of those who use marijuana may have some degree of marijuana use disorder.18 People who begin using marijuana before the age of 18 are four to seven times more likely to develop a marijuana use disorder than adults.19

Marijuana use disorders are often associated with dependence—in which a person feels withdrawal symptoms when not taking the drug. People who use marijuana frequently often report irritability, mood and sleep difficulties, decreased appetite, cravings, restlessness, and/or various forms of physical discomfort that peak within the first week after quitting and last up to 2 weeks.20,21 Marijuana dependence occurs when the brain adapts to large amounts of the drug by reducing production of and sensitivity to its own endocannabinoid neurotransmitters.22,23

    https://www.cdc.gov/marijuana/health-effects/addiction.html

Some people who use marijuana will develop marijuana use disorder, meaning that they are unable to stop using marijuana even though it’s causing health and social problems in their lives.

    • One study estimated that approximately 3 in 10 people who use marijuana have marijuana use disorder.1
    • Another study estimated that people who use cannabis have about a 10% likelihood of becoming addicted.2
    • The risk of developing marijuana use disorder is greater in people who start using marijuana during youth or adolescence and who use marijuana more frequently.3

The following are signs of marijuana use disorder 4:

    • Using more marijuana than intended
    • Trying but failing to quit using marijuana
    • Spending a lot of time using marijuana
    • Craving marijuana
    • Using marijuana even though it causes problems at home, school, or work
    • Continuing to use marijuana despite social or relationship problems.
    • Giving up important activities with friends and family in favor of using marijuana.
    • Using marijuana in high-risk situations, such as while driving a car.
    • Continuing to use marijuana despite physical or psychological problems.
    • Needing to use more marijuana to get the same high.
    • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when stopping marijuana use.

In a study of cannabis research samples over time, the average delta-9 THC (the main form of THC in the cannabis plant) concentration almost doubled, from 9% in 2008 to 17% in 2017.7 Products from dispensaries often offer much higher concentrations than seen in this study. In a study of products available in online dispensaries in 3 states with legal non-medical adult marijuana use, the average THC concentration was 22%, with a range of 0% to 45%.8

    https://www.cnn.com/2022/07/25/health/marijuana-potency-addiction-study-wellness/index.html

Higher concentrations of tetrahydrocannabinol or THC – the part of the marijuana plant that makes you high – are causing more people to become addicted in many parts of the world, a new review of studies found.

Compared with people who use lower-potency products (typically 5 to 10 milligrams per gram of THC), those who use higher-potency cannabis are more likely to experience addiction and mental health outcomes, according to the study published Monday in the journal Lancet Psychiatry.

Scientists have established a “standard THC unit” of 5 milligrams of THC for research. That amount is said to produce a mild intoxication for nonregular users.

“One of the highest quality studies included in our publication found that use of high potency cannabis, compared to low potency cannabis, was linked to a four-fold increased risk of addiction,” said study coauthor Tom Freeman, a senior lecturer in the department of psychology and director of the addiction and mental health group at the University of Bath in the United Kingdom, in an email.

In the United States, about 3 in 10 people who use marijuana have cannabis use disorder, the medical term for marijuana addiction, according to the US Centers for Disease and Prevention.

I personally do not indulge in the whacky tobacky, but I guess I don't have a problem with it being legal.  Seems more harmless than drinking for many reason's...don't remember ever reading a headline that said a person high on the devil's lettuce ran head on into a family killing them.  Not to mention I think the impact on health is much less compared to booze, especially those people who just do gummies.  Legalize it if you ask me.

alcohol is exponentially more physically harmful to your body than any weed...

    it is not even comparable...

you can die from sudden withdrawal from alcohol... one of two "drugs" that that can even happen from (i forget the other)

weed is not physically addictive at all...

  12. an amusing story that illustrates this...

most of you guys probably think i am just this way on the internet, but, you would be sadly mistaken...

i am exactly the same everywhere i go and to anyone...

at vegas i am sitting in the coronado cafe with my younger son and one of my "adopted" sons after U20 weigh ins waiting on my oldest to get there...

we were cutting up making fun of the women's style just awful par terre skills with some volume and a table with a "coach/parent" and an athlete were getting visibly aggravated...

my "adopted" son was getting a little worried while i was laughing harder and harder...

then my older son showed up...

he is a true psycho and does not GAF at all...

he starts in about how a couple of months earlier (he was still 19 at the time) at one of the OTC camps the greco and free guys were doing a par terre "practice" together...

a well know multiple time D1 AA, world gold medalist and multiple time silver medalist and a tokyo bronze would not practice with him at all... literally ran away...

then my kid started yelling at him during practice... verbally assaulting him...

then they went live and my kid teched this guy with guts in about 20 seconds...

    and that is the reality...

then cornella came over and sat down with us and the other table just had to chill out because they realized we were not just shit talking...

i really don't care about weed smoking and its laws. same as alcohol.

but, generally speaking, i dont think it's a net positive for society. just my 2 cents.

while i have many mixed feelings about the pros and cons of federal legalization, don't act like humans have not been using cannabis since at least since we came down from the trees...

cheeseburgers are a worse blight on this society...
