STILLWATER, Okla. -- The Oklahoma State wrestling team claimed a 43-3 win over North Carolina State in Gallagher-Iba Arena Sunday. The Cowboys controlled the action from the start, winning nine of the 10 bouts and scoring 25 takedowns in the dual to the Wolfpack's one. Of the Pokes' nine wins, seven came with bonus points attached. With the victory, OSU improved to 10-2-1 on the year. NC State fell to 8-6-0 overall. “Overall, a good day and a lot of action, a lot of points, a lot of takedowns,” Coach John Smith said. “The takedown count was 25-1, and that's without wrestling a match at 125, so I'm pleased. That's what you're hoping for. You're hoping to see your team have a dominating performance when you have the opportunity to do it." The Cowboys jumped out to a 15-0 lead after freshman Ladd Rupp won by forfeit, Jordan Oliver pinned Dale Shull in 2:45 and Josh Kindig used a third-period rideout to seal his 4-0 win over Darrius Little. The featured bout of the day came at 149 pounds, where returning NCAA champion and top-ranked Darrion Caldwell used a first-period takedown to edge Jamal Parks, 3-1. The bout featured little explosive action from either wrestler, but became frantic at the end as Parks pushed to score a late takedown of his own. "It was pretty tough. I had to watch out for him a little bit in the beginning because that is when he is most dangerous,” Parks said. “After a while that match should have been mine. I had him worn down a little bit and I didn't pull the trigger during the second period. It is not the end though. This will just help me get more prepared for March." Smith said he felt Parks came out a little timid in his bout with Caldwell. "I give credit to Caldwell. He had a little bit of a sense of urgency to put some points up at the end of the first period,” Smith said. “He's a smart kid and there's a reason he's an NCAA champion. He took some real attempts in that first, and towards the end of the first, had a sense of urgency to score. You're not going to beat a guy at the end of the match. The tempo picked up for Jamal in the last 45 seconds, but to beat a guy like that, you have to have tempo for seven minutes. Maybe he can take something positive from it. He's getting better and hopefully he can close that gap as we work towards the next six weeks." It was all Cowboys from that point on, with Neil Erisman scoring an 18-2 technical fall win over Matt Nereim, Dallas Bailey recording a 15-2 major decision win over Colin Genthert, Mike Benefiel tallying a 13-2 major decision win over Quinton Godley, Chris Perry pinning Nijel Jones in 2:32, Clayton Foster pinning KaRonne Jones in 2:42 and Blake Rosholt claiming a 7-3 win over Eloheim Palma despite giving up at least 60 pounds to the Wolfpack heavyweight. "(Palma) is the same age as Blake. He came out; he hasn't redshirted. He was the No. 1-ranked heavyweight coming out of high school his senior year when Blake was a senior. That's pretty impressive,” Smith said. The Cowboys return to action next weekend with a pair of Big 12 duals at home against Missouri on Friday and on the road at Nebraska on Sunday. UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The top-ranked Nittany Lion wrestling team dropped a hard-fought 22-13 decision to No. 8 Iowa on Sunday in front of a sold out Rec Hall. Iowa scored key victories at 133, 141 and 184 to upset Penn State and keep its unbeaten streak alive at 73. A capacity crowd of 6,686 watched the dual, which was the largest Rec Hall crowd since fire codes capped attendance in the mid-1990s. The Hawkeyes came out on fire, picking up three quick wins, including two upsets to put Penn State down early. No. 2 Matt McDonough pinned Nittany Lion true freshman Nathan Morgan (McCook, Neb.) at 125. Morgan was filling in for No. 11 Brad Pataky (Clearfield, Pa.), who continues to rest an injury. At 133, Iowa's Tony Ramos, ranked No. 10, posted a 3-2 upset win over No. 5 Andrew Long to put Iowa up 9-0. That win was followed by Montell Marion's 11-9 win over No. 5 Andrew Alton (Mill Hall, Pa.) at 141. Alton nearly pinned Marion in the first period before Marion, the defending national runner-up at 141, came back with a furious third period comeback. Iowa's third straight win put the Hawkeyes up 12-0. Two-time All-American Frank Molinaro (Barnegat, N.J.) answered with a 10-3 win over Iowa's Mark Ballweg at 149. Ballweg was ranked No. 15 at 141 and moved up a weight to meet Molinaro. Undefeated freshman David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio), ranked No. 3 at 157, continued his dominance with a 12-4 major over No. 14 Derek St. John of Iowa. Taylor had over 4:00 of riding time in the performance. Taylor's major cut the Iowa lead to 12-7 at halftime. Red-shirt freshman Jake Kemerer (Greensburg, Pa.) battled No. 14 Aaron Janssen tough at 165, but the Hawkeye senior escaped with a 6-2 win. Classmate Ed Ruth (Harrisburg, Pa.), ranked No. 2 at 174, notched a dominating 10-3 win over No. 13 Ethan Lofthouse at 174 to cut the Hawkeye lead to 15-10. No. 16 Grant Gambrall downed Penn State's Quentin Wright (Wingate, Pa.), ranked No. 6 at 184, 8-3 in another key bout to push the Hawkeye lead to 18-10. No. 14 Luke Lofthouse notched a 17-6 major over Penn State's Justin Ortega (Oxford, Pa.) at 197 to clinch the dual before No. 5 Cameron Wade (Twinsburg, Ohio) downed Iowa's Blake Raising 1-0 at heavyweight to make the final score 22-13 in Iowa's favor. Penn State falls to 13-1 with the loss, 2-1 in the Big Ten. Iowa improves to 11-0-1, 4-0 in the conference. Iowa continues its unbeaten string, pushing the mark to 73 duals without a loss. Iowa won the takedown battle 23-13 and the bonus point battle 4-1. Penn State returns to action on Friday, Feb. 4, in a road dual at Michigan State. He tacked on two takedowns and then finished off a cradle to get the pin at the 4:16 mark, giving the Hawkeyes an early 6-0 lead. 133: Sophomore Andrew Long (Creston, Iowa), ranked No. 5 at 133, met Iowa's Tony Ramos, who entered the bout ranked No. 10. The duo battled evenly for the first half of the opening period before Long's consistent pressure forced Ramos into a first stall warning. Ramos answered by getting in deep on Long's legs, but the Nittany Lion sophomore forced a stalemate to keep the bout scoreless. Tied 0-0, Long chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 1-0 lead. Ramos turned a scramble at the 1:08 mark into a 2-1 lead with a takedown on the edge of the mat. Long quickly escaped to tie the score and nearly scored on a single leg but Ramos fought off the move to keep the bout tied at :15. Tied 2-2, Ramos chose down to start the final period and quickly escaped to a 3-2 lead. Ramos got in on another single leg with :50 on the clock and Long forced a stalemate with :34 on the clock. Long could not close out a final shot and Ramos escaped with a 3-2 win to put Iowa up 9-0. 141: True freshman Andrew Alton (Mill Hall, Pa.) faced off against Iowa's Montell Marion at 141. Alton entered the bout ranked No. 5 in his first year of collegiate action while Marion, last year's national runner-up at 141, was making his first appearance of the season. Alton looked to turn an early headlock into a quick takedown and back points, but Marion was able to fight off the move and force a stalemate with 2:00 on the clock. Alton turned a quick headlock into a near pin at the :16 mark, but the official could not make the call as he tried to get into position and Alton led 5-0 with the three back points. Marion escaped before the period ended and the Lion freshman led 5-1 after three minutes. Marion chose down to start the second stanza and escaped to a 5-2 deficit. Alton then fought off a Marion shot but the Hawkeye managed a takedown with 1:07 on the clock to cut the Alton lead to 5-4. Alton quickly escaped to a 6-4 lead. The duo traded shots for the rest of the period and Alton led by two heading into the final period. Alton chose down to start the third stanza and Marion cut him loose to a 7-4 lead. Alton got hit for a first stall warning right away and then Marion countered an Alton toss attempt for a takedown to cut Alton's lead to 8-6 after an Alton escape. Marion added another takedown to tie the bout and then began working Alton on top for a riding time point. With :37 left, Alton needed to escape in just :11 and worked his way free, but Marion countered for a takedown and a 10-9 lead as the bout ended. The riding time point gave Marion an 11-9 win and put Penn State down 12-0 after just three bouts. 149: Two-time All-American Frank Molinaro (Barnegat, N.J.), ranked No. 5 at 149, met Iowa's Mark Ballweg, who was ranked No. 15 at 141. Molinaro got the bout's first takedown at the 1:50 mark and began looking for a chance to turn the smaller Hawkeye for back points. Molinaro rode Ballweg into a first stall warning with :24. The Molinaro ride out gave the Lion a 2-0 lead with 2:01 in riding time. Molinaro chose down to start the second period, quickly escaped and then took Ballweg down again to lead 5-0 with 1:25 on the clock. Molinaro cut Ballweg loose and then turned into the Hawkeye, working for another takedown. Molinaro used a high single for another takedown to up his lead to 7-1 with :30 on the clock. Another Molinaro ride-out gave the Lion a 7-1 lead with 2:58 in riding time after two periods. Ballweg chose down to start the third period and Molinaro cut him loose. With the riding time point clinched, Molinaro added another takedown and cut to up his lead to 9-3 with 1:11 left. After a reset at the :12 left, Molinaro almost picked up the major, but Ballweg fought off the late move and Molinaro put Penn State on the board with a 10-3 decision. 157: Red-shirt freshman David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio), undefeated at ranked No. 3 at 157, met Iowa freshman Derek St. John, who was ranked No. 14. Taylor's relentless offense led to a quick takedown and a 2-0 lead with 2:40 on the clock. Taylor turned St. John for back points after a reset, but the Lion did not get the call and his lead held steady at 2-0. Taylor spent the next two minutes working for a turning combination. St. John was able to belly out for the entire period and Taylor led 2-0 with 2:25 in riding time after one period. Taylor chose down to start the second stanza worked his way to an escape and a 3-0 lead. He then got in on St. John and used a low single to force a scramble that he turned into another takedown and a 5-0 lead with 1:05 on the clock. Taylor cut St. John loose after a reset at the :40 mark and then worked tacked on another takedown with :25 on the clock to lead 7-1 after the second period. Facing 2:57 in riding time, St. John chose down to start the third period and Taylor cut him loose to a 7-2 deficit. St. John picked up an escape after choosing down after a poking Taylor in the eye twice. Taylor responded by quickly taking him down for a 9-3 lead with 1:19 on the clock and a riding time point secured. Taylor cut St. John loose again and added another takedown with 1:00 on the clock to lead 11-4. Taylor then rode St. John out to post the dominating 12-4 major with 4:19 in riding time. The win cut Iowa's lead to 12-7 at the halftime break. 165: Nittany Lion freshman Jake Kemerer (Greensburg, Pa.) took on No. 14 Aaron Janssen of Iowa in a battle at 165. Kemerer set the pace early, taking numerous shots that forced Janssen into an early stall warning at the 1:30 mark. Janssen answered by turning a high single into a takedown and a 2-0 lead with :48 on the clock. Kemerer worked hard for an escaped but Janssen was able to maintain control for the remainder of the period to lead 2-0 with :56 in riding time after one period. Janssen chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 3-0 lead. Kemerer and Janssen traded shots until Kemerer nearly finished off a high single at the :45 mark. But the Iowa senior was able to step out of trouble and maintain his 3-0 lead. Trailing by three, Kemerer chose down to start the third period and escaped to a 3-1 deficit with Janssen owning 1:16 in riding time. Janssen gave up a stall point, allowing Kemerer to cut the lead to 3-2, but Janssen added another takedown and, with the riding time point, posted the 6-2 win to put the Hawkeyes up 15-7. 174: Red-shirt freshman Ed Ruth (Harrisburg, Pa.), ranked No. 2 at 174, faced off against No. 13 Ethan Lofthouse of Iowa. The duo traded shots for much of the first period before Ruth got in on Lofthouse's leg for a 2-0 lead with an early takedown. Lofthouse escaped to a 2-1 deficit and then shot in on Ruth. But the Lion freshman countered the move for his own takedown and a 4-1 lead with :10 on the clock. Leading 4-1, Ruth chose down to start the second period. Ruth quickly escaped to a 5-1 lead and then countered a Lofthouse shot for another takedown and a 7-1 lead. Lofthouse added an escaped but Ruth led 7-2 with over a minute's riding time after two periods. Lofthouse chose down to start the third and escaped to a 7-3 deficit. The Hawkeye then gave up a stall warning before Ruth added a final takedown to lead 9-3. The riding time point gave Ruth the 10-3 decision, cutting the Iowa lead to 15-10. 184: Penn State sophomore Quentin Wright (Wingate, Pa.), ranked No. 6 at 184, met No. 16 Grant Gambrall. Gambrall countered an early Wright shot and took a 2-0 lead with a takedown just over a minute into the bout. Gambrall rode Wright out for the rest of the period to lead 2-0 with 2:00 in riding time heading into the middle stanza. Wright quickly scrambled his way to an escaped and a 2-1 deficit. Gambrall countered a low Wright shot for another takedown and a 4-1 lead with 1:10 on the clock. Wright escaped after giving up a first stall warning and trailed 4-2 at the end of the second period. Gambrall, with 2:33 in riding time, chose down to start the third period and escaped to a 5-2 lead. Wright scrambled to score as the period wound down, but Gambrall worked his way around the Lion sophomore with 1:10 on the clock to move out to a 7-2 lead. Gambrall cut Wright loose to a 7-3 deficit but could not score again and Gambrall notched the 8-3 win with the riding time point. 197: Sophomore Justin Ortega (Oxford, Pa.) took on Hawkeye senior Luke Lofthouse, who was ranked No. 14 at 197. Lofthouse took a 2-1 lead early with a takedown and a quick Ortega escape. The Hawkeye senior added a second takedown to up his lead to 4-1, but Ortega quickly reversed the senior to cut his lead to 4-3 with :28 on the clock. Ortega got hit with a stall warning and then Lofthouse escaped with :05 left, quickly slid behind Ortega and notched a late takedown to lead 7-3 after one period. Ortega chose down to start the second period and escaped to a 7-4 deficit. The ranked Hawkeye senior tacked on another takedown late in the second period to lead 9-4 heading into the final period. Lofthouse chose down to start the third stanza, Ortega gave up a point for a locked hand, an escape and then a takedown. The swift flurry of scoring put Lofthouse up 13-5 with :45. Lofthouse added two more takedowns to post 7-6 major decision and clinch the dual, putting Iowa up 22-10. 285: Nittany Lion heavyweight Cameron Wade (Twinsburg, Ohio), ranked No. 5 nationally, met Iowa's Blake Raising. The duo of heavyweights traded shots for the bulk of the first period with neither man mounting a real threat to score. Tied 0-0, Raising chose neutral to start the second period. Like the first period, Wade tried to force the tempo, but Raising was able to work the edge of the mat and keep the Lion from gaining an offensive edge. Tied 0-0, Wade chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 1-0 lead. The fifth-ranked Lion continued to try and open up the offense, but Raising was able to hand-fight his way to the midway point of the third period. Action continued to the :30 mark when Raising took a shot on the edge of the mat. But Wade deftly forced a stalemate and a reset with :20 on the clock. Wade held on for a 1-0 win, making the final score 22-13 for the Hawkeyes.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The University of Iowa wrestling team took full advantage of its chance to play spoiler Sunday afternoon, knocking off top-ranked and undefeated Penn State, 22-13, at Rec Hall in University Park, PA. The Hawkeyes held Penn State to its lowest point total of the season, while handing the Nittany Lions (13-1, 2-1 Big Ten) their first loss of 2010-11. The dual will be aired on the Big Ten Network Sunday at 8:30 p.m. (CT) and Tuesday at 6 p.m. (CT). The eighth-ranked Hawkeyes (11-0-1, 4-0 Big Ten) used a pin from sophomore Matt McDonough at 125, a major decision from senior Luke Lofthouse at 197 and decisions from redshirt freshman Tony Ramos (133), junior Montell Marion (141), senior Aaron Janssen (165) and sophomore Grant Gambrall (184) to extend its unbeaten streak to 73 duals. Marion, who was the 2010 NCAA runner-up at 141, was making his first appearance in the Hawkeye lineup since being reinstated to the team earlier this month. Iowa jumped out to a 12-0 lead with wins at the first three weights, silencing the sold-out crowd of 6,500. McDonough opened the dual with his third-straight pin, sticking Penn State's Nate Morgan in 4:16. The Hawkeye sophomore, who pinned top-ranked Brandon Precin of Northwestern Friday night, gave the Hawkeyes six vital team points with the pin while improving to 16-1 (12-0 in duals). Ramos, who is ranked between 10th and 14th in the nation, scored Iowa's first upset of the day with a 3-2 decision over Penn State's Andrew Long, who is ranked fourth or fifth. Ramos used a second-period takedown and a third-period escape to remain undefeated in dual competition at 8-0, and hand Long (6-1) his first loss of the season. Marion fought off his back to beat No. 5/6 Andrew Alton of Penn State, 11-9. Alton jumped out to a 5-0 lead near the end of the first period after taking Marion down and scoring three nearfall points. Marion chipped away at the lead in the second period before exploding for three takedowns in the third and collecting 1:16 in riding time for his first win of the season. Penn State responded with wins at 149 and 157 to make the score 12-7 going into the intermission. With Marion's appearance in the lineup at 141, Hawkeye sophomore Mark Ballweg bumped up to 149 to face Penn State junior Frank Molinaro, who is ranked between fifth and seventh in the nation. Ballweg, who is ranked between 12th and 15th at 141, fought hard, but the weight difference helped Molinaro score a 10-3 decision. Nittany Lion redshirt freshman David Taylor, who entered the dual with an undefeated 25-0 record and a No. 2/3 national ranking, scored Penn State's only bonus points of the dual with his 12-4 major decision over Hawkeye redshirt freshman Derek St. John at 157. Coming out of the intermission, Janssen gave the Hawkeyes a 15-7 lead with his 6-2 decision over Penn State redshirt freshman Jake Kemerer. Nittany Lion redshirt freshman Ed Ruth, who is ranked between first and third in the nation, made the score 15-10 with his 10-3 decision over Hawkeye redshirt freshman Ethen Lofthouse at 174. Gambrall and Luke Lofthouse sealed the team victory for the Hawkeyes with wins at the next two weight classes. Gambrall, who is ranked between 14th and 16th in the nation, scored a takedown in each period in his 8-3 upset over No. 6/7 Quentin Wright at 184. Lofthouse collected seven takedowns and his 40th career win with a 17-6 major decision over sophomore Justin Ortega at 197. Penn State won the final bout of the dual, when No. 5/7 junior Cameron Wade posted a 1-0 decision over unranked Hawkeye junior Blake Rasing at heavyweight. Ten Hawkeye wrestlers also competed unattached at Saturday's Grand View College Open in Des Moines. Junior J.J. Krutsinger (133) and freshman Bobby Telford (Hwt.) won titles at their respective weight classes, while freshman Michael Kelly (165) and redshirt freshman Tomas Lira (184) placed second, freshman Walt Gillmor (165) placed third and freshman Matt Gurule (125) placed fourth. ATHERTON, Calif. -- Oklahoma City University pulled out its third consecutive Women's College Wrestling Association championship as four Stars captured individual titles Saturday at Hayne-Prim Pavilion. OCU Women (Photo/Tony Rotundo, Tech-Fall.com)The Stars led the team points 117-96, overtaking Simon Fraser (British Columbia) by winning nine of 10 bouts in the championship finals and third-place matches. OCU had 13 all-Americans. Nicole Woody at 44 kilograms (97 pounds), Ashley Hudson at 59 (130), Kristie Davis at 67 (147) and Brittany Delgado at 80 (176) became national champions for OCU. Michaela Hutchison finished as runner-up at 55 (121). Hudson took home the outstanding wrestler of the tournament award. Stars taking third place were Kristi Garr at 48 (105), Joey Miller at 51 (112), Sheila McCabe at 59 (130), Tessa Plana at 63 (138), Brittney Roberts at 67 and Melissa Simmons at 72 (158). McCabe, a senior from El Cajon, Calif., took third for the second year in a row. Finishing fifth place were Amberle Montgomery at 63 and Karon Scott at 90 (200). Scott, a senior from Austin, Texas, finished her OCU career as a three-time all-American. Scott finished as a 95-kilo finalist as a freshman and third place as a sophomore. “This was amazing,” OCU coach Archie Randall said. “The girls did a great job. They closed hard. We won matches over people we lost to earlier. We struggled, but they pushed hard.” Hudson and Woody became OCU's first four-time WCWA all-Americans. Hudson finished fourth at 55 as a freshman, runner-up at 55 as a sophomore, then third at 59 as a junior. Woody was runner-up at 48 as a freshman, third at 48 as a sophomore, then runner-up at 44 last season. Hudson defeated Cianah Hee of Cumberlands (Ky.) 1-0, 3-1 for the 59-kilogram championship. Hudson secured her title with a two-point takedown to go up 3-0 in the second period. Hudson avenged a loss to Hee in the NWCA National Duals. A senior from Wildwood, Mo., Hudson made the championship finals by winning 4-3, 4-1 over Tanya Kusse of Lindenwood (Mo.). Hudson's first two matches of the day ended as technical falls before she won 5-1, 4-0 over Haylee Childs of King in the quarterfinals. “I've gotten every place,” Hudson said. “It was always a sad feeling at the end of the year. It's awesome now.” Randall said, “Ashley had a great year. She was upset by Hee at the NWCAs, but she dominated tonight.” Woody captured the championship 6-0, 7-0 over Daphne-Ann Hodgson of Simon Fraser. Woody notched two two-point takedowns in the first period and three two-point moves in the second. A senior from Gambrills, Md., Woody advanced to the 44-kilo final with a 7-0, 6-0 victory over Michiko Araki of Simon Fraser. Araki turned Woody during the second period, but failed to score points on Woody. Woody scored to finish the technical fall and end the bout. Woody's 5-0, 6-0 win over Breanna Gedeon of Lindenwood advanced her past the quarterfinals. To prepare for the WCWA Championships, Woody cut weight from her normal 48 kilos (105 pounds). “It was the hardest part of the tournament,” Woody said. “It's about time.” Randall said, “Nicole Woody finally reached her goal of being a national champion. She was focused, and she went down a weight class.” Davis overwhelmed Christen Paysse of Cumberlands 6-0, 6-0 for the 67-kilo championship. She has three daughters – Kayla, Bryleigh and Lilly -- and is married to OCU assistant coach Link Davis. Davis' title follows two years away from the mat having her third daughter and recovering from injury. She started rounding into shape during the summer during international competition. “It was a nice way to end the season,” Kristie Davis said. “It's been a long journey. OCU is a good place for me to be. It's been tremendous.” Davis added WCWA champion to her nine Women's World Championships medals. “Of all the medals she's won, this was important to her because it's a team thing,” Randall said. “She was worried that she wouldn't win it. She won this for the team.” Delgado finished as 80-kilogram national champion after pinning Leya-Justi Luafalemana of Jamestown (N.D.) at the 1:04 mark in the second period. A junior from Fountain Inn, S.C., Delgado pinned her way into the final. She picked up a fall in 1:20 over Lisa Tinney of Cumberlands, then finished up her semifinal match with Chelsey Fleming of Jamestown in 37 seconds. “It's great,” Delgado said. “My freshman year has made me appreciate these past two years. I ended up having surgery at the end of the year after I wrestled injured. That pushes me now.” A two-time champion, Delgado switched to 95 and won the national title last season. “From where she was as a freshman, she has become an outstanding wrestler,” Randall said. Helen Maroulis of Simon Fraser took the 55-kilo title with a 7-1, 1-2, 2-1 victory over Hutchison. In the third third period, Hutchison took two shots and finished her second attempt with a one-point takedown with 38 seconds left. Maroulis answered with two one-point takedowns. A junior from Soldotna, Alaska, Hutchison rolled to two pins to start her day. Hutchison nearly had a third pin before settling for a 7-0, 3-1 semifinals victory over Shauna Isbell of Lindenwood. Stars recognized for classroom performance OCU garnered the WCWA scholar team award with a 3.10 cumulative grade-point average. Three Stars picked up academic awards – McCabe, Plana and Audrey Morehouse. To earn the academic award, each wrestler maintained a 3.5 GPA. McCabe has a 4.0 GPA. Team Scoring: 1. EDINBORO, Pa. -- The Edinboro wrestling team evened its record at 8-8-1 overall and improved to 3-1 in the Eastern Wrestling League with a 35-7 win over Cleveland State at McComb Fieldhouse on Saturday night. The win was the fourth straight for the Fighting Scots and the sixth in a row over the Vikings. Edinboro won eight of the ten bouts, recording bonus points in six matches. Cleveland State held a brief 4-0 lead as Ben Willeford opened with a 15-1 major decision over Bijan Banks at 125 lbs. The Fighting Scots ran off wins in the next four matches to take a 15-4 lead. Eric Morrill won his eighth straight match as he hung on for a 7-6 decision over Nick Flannery at 133 lbs. Tied at 2-2 after one period, Morrill grabbed a 4-2 lead with a reversal in the second. He would lead 6-3 thanks to a takedown in the third period with 1:30 remaining before Flannery would use an escape and a takedown with a 1:03 remaining to tie the match at 6-6. Morrill won thanks to a 1:19 advantage in riding time. Ranked 20th by Amateur Wrestling News, Morrill improved to 17-8 and picked up his 83rd career win. Kasey Davis followed with a 14-6 major decision over Josh Palivoda at 141 lbs., as the freshman improved to 17-12. Davis had six takedowns in the match. Torsten Gillespie boosted his record to 17-8 and picked up career win number 95 with a 9-1 major decision over Lawrence Cavello at 149 lbs. Ranked 16th by Amateur Wrestling News and 19th by InterMat, Gillespie jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead after one period with a takedown thirty seconds into the match, followed by four near-fall points. After a scoreless second period, Gillespie added a reversal in the third and owned a 2:33 advantage in riding time. Johnny Greisheimer continued his hot wrestling as he won for the fourth straight time and seventh time in the last eight with a 9-1 major decision over Matt Donohoe. The sophomore led just 2-0 after two periods thanks to a first period takedown, but pulled away in the third. He reversed Donohoe less than twenty seconds into the period, then picked up two near-fall points. He would add a takedown after a Donohoe esacpe later in the period and had a large riding time advantage of 4:18. Greisheimer is now 19-10. Cleveland State picked up his second win of the night when Robbie Michaels edged Boro freshman Ethan Saylor 6-4 at 165 lbs. Michaels moved to 18-6 but it didn’t come easily. The match was tied at 3-3 after two periods, and after a Michael’s escape early in the third, Saylor tied the match with 21 seconds remaining on a penalty point against Michaels for fleeing the mat. Michaels then took his second injury timeout, with Saylor choosing to remain neutral. Michaels then registered the winning takedown with 14 seconds left to send Saylor to 6-17. Chris Hrunka evened his record at 14-14 with a 3-2 decision over Aric Thurn at 174 lbs. The Viking recorded the first points of the match with a takedown with 43 seconds left in the first period. It remained that way until the 1:20 mark of the third period when Hrunka tied it with a takedown. He rode out Thurn and won thanks to a riding time advantage of 2:38. The fighting Scots ended the night with three big wins. Chris Honeycutt, ranked second by both InterMat and Amateur Wrestling News at 184 lbs., remained undefeated at 21-0 as the junior won a 17-1 technical fall over Corbin Boone. The end came at 6:09. He led 8-0 after one period thanks to a takedown 12 seconds into the match. He added three back points in two separate moves. He built the lead to 12-0 after two periods with a takedown and two near-fall points. After giving up the escape in the third, he registered his third takedown and ended the match with three near-fall points. Shawn Fendone and Ernest James ended the night with pins. Fendone came up with his eighth fall of the year and 19th of his career, pinning Nick Anthony at 2:15. The senior has now won eleven straight matches while improving to 21-8. He is ranked 19th by Amateur Wrestling News. James ended a string of three straight losses as he flattened Chris Weber at 2:31 of the heavyweight bout. COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Freshman Spencer Myers shut out Ben Brooks via a 12-0 major decision and the University of Maryland wrestling team countered back-to-back North Carolina pin-falls for a 20-18 win Saturday night at the Comcast Pavilion. The Terps earned their first conference win of the season after falling to No. 23 Virginia Tech 18-17 on Sunday. “Our guys are wrestling hard and they’re wrestling tough,” said head coach Kerry McCoy. “They wrestled with intensity and that is exactly what we need to be doing this time of the year.” With the score tied 6-6 after North Carolina’s Nick Stabile narrowly defeated Ben Dorsay in overtime at 149 pounds, the Terps won the next three bouts in dominant fashion. From the 157 to 174-pound matches, Maryland’s trio of No. 13 Kyle John, No. 3 Josh Asper and No. 17 mike Letts earned over nine minutes of combined riding time to shoot Maryland to a 16-6 lead. John and Asper each earned decisions over Corey Mock and Thomas Scotton, respectively, while Letts controlled Andre Petroski in a 14-3 major decision. North Carolina’s Antonio Giorgio and Zac Bennett followed, however, with consecutive pin-falls over Corey Peltier and Christian Boley to give the Tar Heels the 12-point swing and a two-point lead heading into the final match at heavyweight, pitting true freshmen Myers and Brooks against each other. With the win on the line and the memories of last week’s tough loss in mind, Myers overpowered Brooks from the opening minutes in the first period. USAFA, Colo. -- Dropping just one bout, the Air Force wrestling team rolled to a 38-6 victory over South Dakota State Saturday evening in Clune Arena. With the win, the Falcons move to 10-2 overall on the year and 2-0 in the Western Wrestling Conference, while the Jackrabbits drop to 1-11-1 overall, 0-4 in the WWC. Air Force now has its highest win total since the 2001-02 season, when the Falcons registered an 11-3 overall record. The Jacks took an early 6-0 lead in the team scoring, earning a fall at 125 pounds, while an SDSU forfeit at 133 pounds put Air Force on the board. The Falcons took the lead with a dominating win from 141-pounder Cole VonOhlen (So., Jackson, Minn.). VonOhlen, ranked 10th in the nation by Intermat, pinned the Jacks' Tyler Johnson in a time of 2:32 to capture his 31st win of the season. Registering his fourth-straight win by fall, VonOhlen matched his season win total from 2009-10. Air Force posted major decisions in its next two weight classes, with freshman Josh Kreimier (Fort Collins, Colo.) winning an 11-2 match at 149 pounds, while junior Alec Williams (Fultondale, Ala.) racked up a 14-2 score. The Falcons' team lead ballooned to 19 points with a big win at 165 pounds, as sophomore Clayton Gable (Dallastown, Pa.) earned an 18-3 technical fall, while a 13-0 major decision by team captain Joseph Stafford (Loomis, Calif.) at 174 pounds helped seal the victory for Air Force, which led 29-6 with three bouts remaining. Annapolis, Md. -- The fifth-ranked Rutgers wrestling team (19-1, 7-0 EIWA) continued its stellar season dropping EIWA rival Navy, 23-9, to claim its 15th consecutive dual win. After Navy opened the dual with a victory at 133-pounds, Rutgers used a 6-1 decision by Trevor Melde (Hewitt, N.J.) and a 10-2 major decision from Mario Mason (Moorestown, N.J.) to turn to 3-0 deficit into a 7-3 lead heading into a showdown between ranked grapplers at 157-pounds. At 157-pounds, No. 16 Daryl Cocozzo (River Edge, N.J.) took on sixth-ranked Bryce Saddoris. After a scoreless first, Saddoris started down to begin the second and quickly earned an escape to take the 1-0 lead which he took into the final period. In the third, Cocozzo chose down and escaped with 1:50 remaining in the final frame to even the match. After the two wrestlers felt each other out, Cocozzo shot on Saddoris and earned a takedown with a minute left on the clock. Saddoris escaped with 39 seconds remaining but Cocozzo was able to hold him at bay for the remainder of the bout to earn the upset with a 3-2 decision. The Cocozzo upset seemed to spark the Scarlet Knights as Scott Winston (Jackson, N.J) and Alex Caruso (Green Brook, N.J.) earned a decision and a major respectively to push the RU lead to 17-3; The match at 184-pounds provided the most drama of the night as Dan Rinaldi (Lodi, N.J.) took on No. 11 Luke Rebertus. After the two grapplers exchanged a pair of escapes in regulation the match went into overtime where after two sudden victory frames and a tie breaker neither wrestler was able to score a point. In the second tie breaker each wrestler was able to earn an escape to send the match into a third sudden victory period tied, 2-2. After another two sudden victory frames and another tiebreaker no additional points were scored sending the match into a fourth tiebreaker. Rinaldi started down to start the fourth tiebreaker frame and Rebertus rode him out to set up an escape and win situation. Rinaldi rode Rebertus out for a majority of the frame but Rebertus was able to escape with just a second left to earn the victory which was highly contested by the RU bench leading to a warning on the RU coaching staff. RU didn’t let the controversy at 184-pounds affect them as they cruised to victories at 197 and 285-pounds. Mike Wagner (South Plainfield, N.J.) earned a 6-1 decision over Greg Prioleau at 197 and DJ Russo (Netcong, N.J.) earned a 3-1 decision over Mike Landis at heavyweight to push the Scarlet Knights advantage to 23-6. A Navy victory at 125-pounds ended the evening on a sour note for RU but the Scarlet Knights were still able to take home their 19thdual victory of the season by a 23-9 margin. SAFA, Colo. -- In a thrilling dual that came down to the last match, the Air Force wrestling team earned a 22-19 victory over North Dakota State Friday evening in Clune Arena. The Falcons, competing in their first Western Wrestling Conference dual of the season, improved to 9-2 overall on the year and 1-0 in the WWC, while the Bison fall to 7-3, 1-2 in the conference. The Falcons, who have already posted nine dual victories for just the second time in the past eight seasons, have gotten out to their best start since the 1992-93 season, when Air Force compiled a 10-1 dual record. Air Force trailed by three points in the team scoring with one bout remaining--the 141-pound match-up between the Falcons' Cole VonOhlen (So., Jackson, Minn.) and the Bison's Trevor Johnson. VonOhlen needed to score at least a decision to tie the match, while a win with bonus points would give the Falcons the team victory. The first points of the bout went to Johnson, who scored an early takedown, but VonOhlen quickly turned things around. After an escape and a takedown of his own, VonOhlen was able to get the fall in a time of 1:48 to seal the dual win for Air Force. With the win, VonOhlen, ranked as eighth in some polls, earned his 30th victory of the season, moving to 10-1 in dual action. North Dakota State held the early lead in the dual, winning a pair of close decisions at 149 and 157 pounds to start the match. Air Force's first individual win came at 165 pounds, as sophomore Clayton Gable (Dallastown, Pa.) scored a 12-4 major decision over Tyler Johnson to bring the Falcons within two points. Meanwhile, senior captain Joseph Stafford (Loomis, Calif.) gave Air Force its first lead of the evening, earning a 16-0 technical fall over Mac Stoll at 174 pounds. The Falcons' lead was short-lived, as the Bison won the next two matches, scoring a major decision at 184 pounds and a decision at 197 pounds. However, sophomore Jared Erickson (Newton, Utah) responded with a 2-0 decision in the heavyweight bout to bring Air Force back within one point in the team scoring. The Bison stretched out their lead, as 17th-ranked Trent Sprenkle registered a fall in the 125-pound match to put NDSU ahead 19-12. Down by seven points with two weight classes remaining, Air Force needed wins in both of its last two matches. Senior Derek Gillespie (Chesapeake, Va.) did his part to keep the Falcons alive in the team competition, controlling the action in his 133-pound match-up against Justin Solberg. Gillespie earned an 11-3 major decision over Solberg to ease the pressure going into the final bout. CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team secured a 23-15 dual win over Northern Illinois Friday night in the West Gym. With the win, the Panthers move to 8-8 in dual matches this season. UNI won seven of the 10 matches, picking up wins from Ryan Jauch (133 lbs.), Brett Robbins (149 lbs.), David Bonin (157 lbs.), Nick Pickerell (165 lbs.), Brice Wolf (174 lbs.), Ryan Loder (184 lbs.) and Christian Brantley (285 lbs.). NIU earned a win at 125 pounds to start the match before Jauch secured a 9-0 major decision over Izzy Montemayor to give UNI the 4-3 lead after two matches. The Huskies came right back, securing a pin at 141 pounds to go up 9-4. Starting with an 8-2 decision for Robbins at 149 pounds, the Panthers rattled off five consecutive wins, including a major decision win for Bonin at 157 pounds. Bonin upset No. 18-ranked Bryan Deustch by a score of 14-4. Returning to the dual lineup for the first time since Jan. 8, Pickerell scored a 3-0 decision over Matt Mougin. Wolf followed that with a 6-2 win over Caleb Busson. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team shook off a slow start to earn a dominant 27-9 road win against rival Ohio State on Friday evening (Jan. 28) at St. John Arena. The Wolverines dropped the opening two matches before posting seven straight wins, earning bonus points in three, to cruise to their fourth consecutive dual win. The Buckeyes elected to draw the opening weight and initially the strategy paid off as Ohio State claimed back-to-back decisions at 174 and 184 pounds to build an early 6-0 advantage. The advantage was short-lived. Fifth-year senior captain Anthony Biondo (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley HS) kick started Michigan's comeback with one of his own at 197 pounds, shaking off an early two-point deficit to defeat Peter Capone, 10-5, and claim his 100th collegiate victory in impressive fashion. The Wolverine captain initiated the early scramble that provided Capone his lead, and Biondo made sure to finish his subsequent opportunities, converting on four takedowns, including two third-period double legs, to dominate the remainder of the match. Junior/sophomore heavyweight Ben Apland (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) put the Wolverines ahead for good with a late pin against Zach Stolarsky. The Wolverine dominated the match from his feet, scoring on six takedowns, but gave up a pair of reversals while looking for the head scoop out in front of the head. Apland made good on his third pin attempt, taking Stolarsky straight to his back off a late low single, sticking the Buckeye wrestler at the 6:26 mark for his third fall of the season. Sophomore Sean Boyle (Lowell, Mass./Blair Academy) took advantage of a quick start against Bo Touris at 125 pounds, scoring on takedowns in the first and second periods and accumulating 2:09 in riding-time advantage to secure a 7-6 decision. Boyle converted on a single leg off an early restart in the first, rode out the period and carried his momentum into the second, coming out on top of a scramble midway through. The Buckeye wrestler cut the gap in the third, striking on two high crotches, including one in the final 15 seconds, but Boyle's time advantage provided the difference. Carrying a six-point lead into intermission, the Wolverines blew the dual wide open after the break, claiming four straight wins -- two with bonus -- at the lowerweight and middleweight categories. Junior Zac Stevens (Monroe, Mich./Monroe HS) won a big swing match at 133 pounds, using a balanced attack to roll past Ian Paddock, 10-3. The match was bookended by a pair of wild scrambles; the first -- early in the opening frame -- produced no points, while the second sealed the win for Stevens midway through the third as the Wolverine wrestler put Paddock on his back for four points. Stevens also scored on takedowns in the first and third periods and accumulated 1:03 in riding time to take the series lead against Paddock. The two wrestlers split a pair of matches last season. Senior/junior captain Kellen Russell (High Bridge, N.J./Blair Academy) added another win to his perfect season record, improving to 24-0 with dominant 12-2 major decision against Randy Languis at 141 pounds. Russell, ranked No. 1 nationally, converted on four takedowns, returning Languis to mat with a leg turk to add two back points on the last one, and built up 2:57 in riding time. Sophomore/freshman Eric Grajales (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) secured his fourth straight dual win -- and his second technical in two matches -- with a commanding 19-2 win over Mike Fee at 149 pounds. The Wolverine rookie hit a pair of headlocks, scoring four points on his first attempt early in the first and adding another at the final buzzer in the third to garner the necessary tech-fall margin. He tilted Fee twice for four points in the opening frame and locked up a cradle for three points in the second. In all, Grajales earned 12 total back points in the match. Sophomore/freshman Brandon Zeerip (Fremont, Mich./Hesperia HS) claimed the Wolverines' final win with an impressive last-second comeback effort against Jared Kusar at 157 pounds, putting the Buckeye on his back to win 10-6. Zeerip shook off a pair of early takedowns to convert on a single of his own late in the opening period. The Wolverine newcomer cut Kusar loose early in the third to give away a one-point advantage and won a flurry late; after nearly giving up a takedown, he locked up a cradle to roll up Kusar for five points in the final 15 second. The Wolverines (8-2, 3-0 Big Ten) will close out the road weekend on Sunday (Jan. 30), heading to Bloomington, Ind., for conference slate against Indiana. ITHACA, N.Y. -- The No. 2 Big Red wrestling team stormed past Binghamton, 35-3, on Friday night at the Friedman Wrestling Center in front of a sold out crowd. Senior Mack Lewnes (174) and junior Cam Simaz (197) picked up first period pins in their respective weight classes. Also notching bonus points for Cornell were Frank Perrelli (125) and Mike Grey (133), who both won by major decision. The Big Red improves to 6-1 while Binghamton is now 11-4. At 125 pounds, No. 10 Perrelli started the night off right against Derek Steely. Perrelli took a 4-1 lead with two takedowns, but with two escapes and a takedown of his own Steely tied the bout at 4-4 after the first period. Perrelli grabbed two more takedowns in the second period to hold a 9-5 advantage heading into the final two minutes. The Big Red wrestler continued to rack up points in the third period to win a 16-8 major decision. Seventh ranked Grey hit the mat for the first time this season at 133 pounds and took on Dan Riggi. Grey came out strong and converted on a low double for a takedown with a little over 15 seconds off the clock. The Big Red wrestler racked up riding time, keeping control for the entire period. Grey escaped from his opening down position in the second period and had two more takedowns. The senior continued to rack up points in the third and with five additional takedowns won an 18-6 decision. Freshman Mike Nevinger hit the mats against Anwar Goeres at 141 pounds. The two traded takedowns in the first period, but Goeres held a slight 3-2 advantage heading into the second period. Goeres chose down in the second period but was unable to escape from the Big Red wrestler. Nevinger chose to start the last period down on the mat and with 39 seconds left, the bout was tied 3-3 when Goeres was hit with a technical violation for locking his hands. Goeres let Nevinger up looking to score, which he did with a takedown with 15 seconds left in the bout. Nevinger had riding time locked up, and the match looked to be headed into overtime. With four seconds left on the clock, the crowd went wild when Nevinger twisted free for an escape to win a 6-5 decision. At 149 pounds, No. 2 Kyle Dake took on No. 12 Donnie Vinson. Dake grabbed an early takedown, but Vinson escaped in the first period. Midway through the first period, Dake was hit with his first stalling warning . Dake chose to start the second down and immediately escaped. The Big Red wrestler was hit with his second stalling at the end of the second to give Vinson another point. Vinson chose to start the third at neutral and with 30 seconds left in the bout, the match was tied when Dake was hit with his third stalling call. Vinson took down Dake quickly after the call to win a 5-3 decision. Freshman Craig Eifert faced Matt Kaylor at 157 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Eifert escaped from his opening down position in the second. Kaylor took down the Big Red wrestler, but Eifert escaped and with three seconds left in the period grabbed a takedown of his own. Kaylor escaped from his down position in the third, but Eifert demonstrated good defense and won a 4-3 decision. After a 10 minute halftime break, No. 5 Justin Kerber squared off against Justin Lister at 165 pounds. Kerber notched the only takedown of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Kerber lengthened his lead to 4-0 with a reversal with a little under a minute left on the clock. Lister chose to start the third period down. Kerber held strong on top until with five second left in the bout, Lister earned a reversal. With 2:27 in riding time, Kerber won a 5-3 decision. Cornell held a 17-3 lead. At 174 pounds, No. 3 Lewnes notched three takedowns over Binghamton's Ryan McGarity in the first period. With 44 seconds left on the clock, Lewnes worked to tilt his opponent and muscled his way to a pin in 2:30. Seventh ranked Steve Bosak held a 2-0 lead over No. 10 Nate Schiedel at 184 pounds after the first period. Bosak chose to start the second period down and with only 10 seconds off the clocked reversed his opponent and immediately tilted him for two back points. Schiedel chose neutral for the third period, and neither wrestler scored again. With 3:12 in riding time, Bosak won a 7-0 decision. Top ranked Simaz took on Cody Reed at 197 pounds. Simaz hit the mat fast and grabbed an early takedown, from which Reed escaped 20 seconds later. Simaz took down his opponent once again and won by fall in 2:48. At heavyweight, Stryker Lane hit the mat against Lance Moore. With 18 seconds left in the first period, Lane took down Moore. Moore escaped from his opening down position in the second period for the only point of the two minutes. Lane chose to start the third period down and within five seconds reversed his opponent. Moore would escape, but Lane took him down once again to win a 6-2 decision. The Big Red will play host to No. 15 Iowa State on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Newman Arena. NORMAN, Okla. -- The seventh-ranked Oklahoma wrestling squad narrowly defeated No. 16 Nebraska, 17-16, Friday night at the McCasland Field House. The Sooners (11-1, 2-1) won five-straight bouts, two by major decision, to claim the victory over the Cornhuskers, marking OU's second straight win in Big 12 action. “It was a great dual, but a tough dual,” Jack Spates said. “I was disappointed in some of the bouts, but our guys wrestled hard. Those guys (Nebraska) came out throwing punches. We punched back and punched hard. That's what you've got to do in bouts like this.” The Big 12 showdown began with a 197-pound bout between OU's Keldrick Hall and Nebraska's Andy Johnson. Hall fell behind 4-0 early after giving up a takedown and near fall points in the first period. In the second period, Hall had an escape to put the score at 1-4. However, Johnson added an escape, takedown and 1:02 of riding time to earn an 8-2 decision. Facing a 3-0 deficit Oklahoma's Nathan Fernandez, ranked No. 10, and Nebraska's 12th-ranked Tucker Lane took to the mat. Fernandez led 1-0 going into the third period but gave up an escape and takedown to give Lane the 4-1 decision. Jarrod Patterson got the Sooners on the board after he blanked NU's David Klingsheim at 125 pounds. After a scoreless first, Patterson had an escape and added 3-near fall points to go along with 1:51 in riding time. OU's Jordan Keller evened the score, 6-6, after he earned a 5-0 decision over the Cornhuskers' Ridge Kiley. Keller led 3-0 going into the third period after acquiring an escape and takedown closed out the bout with an escape. The Sooners captured their first lead of the dual, 10-6, after OU's reigning All-American Zack Bailey earned a major decision victory over Nebraska's Mike Koehnlien. Bailey accumulated four takedowns, a reversal and added 2:11 of riding time to run away with the Sooners first major decision match of the night. At 149-pounds Oklahoma's Matt Lester rode his way to a 9-0 major decision win over NU's Ross Grande. Lester had a takedown and a total of six near fall points in the first period to lead 8-0. Lester then rode-out his opponent throughout the entire second period to give him a total of 4:08 of riding time. Oklahoma extended its lead to 11 after Chase Nelson earned a last-second victory over Nebraska's Tyler Koehn. Nelson trailed by one going into the second, but had an escape and takedown to take a 4-3 advantage into the third period. In the third, Koehn earned an early escape to even the score at four, but Nelson secured the bout with a pivotal takedown at the 0:13 mark. The highly anticipated 165-pound bout between OU's second-ranked Tyler Caldwell and the Cornhuskers' top-ranked Jordan Burroughs was a battle that saw Caldwell fall just short of his second-straight win over a top-10 opponent. Burroughs held a 2-1 advantage heading into the third period and added two takedowns and 1:26 of riding time to take the match, 7-3. In the 174-pound bout OU's Jeff James and Nebraska's Caleb Kolb went to sudden-victory overtime before Kolb secured a takedown with 0:30 remaining to get Nebraska a 5-3 decision and cut OU's lead to five. At 184-pounds Nebraska's Josh Ihnen gave the Sooners' Erich Schmidtke a scare after he turned the Sooner to earn a two-point near fall in the second period. Schmidtke dropped the final bout of the evening by an 8-0 major decision, making the final count 17-16. “You're not going to win all these meets easily,” Spates said. “You've got to fight, scrap and claw and that's what our guys did tonight. STILLWATER, Okla. -- The Oklahoma State wrestling team beat Northern Colorado, 44-0, Friday night in Gallagher-Iba Arena to score the 1,000th all-time dual match victory in the history of the program. With the win, the fifth-ranked Cowboys improved to 9-2-1 on the year, while the Bears fell to 1-8-0 on the year. The shutout marked the first for Oklahoma State since a 43-0 romp of UC Davis on Dec. 18, 2009. It was the 28th time the Cowboys have pitched a shutout under coach John Smith. Most important, however, was the historical milestone of 1,000 wins. "I'm a small part of it and I got lucky. I was lucky to be around on the 1,000th,” Smith said. “Coach Gallagher, Coach Griffith, our coaches have been so successful. From the very beginning, Oklahoma State has been a leader in skill and technique and development. Coach Gallagher was so instrumental in spreading wrestling across the country, it's unbelievable. Without Coach Gallagher, the sport may never have hit the East Coast or the West Coast. One of his missions was to make sure that it did that and it grew because of him. A lot of this recognition tonight is his start and it's pretty amazing because you don't win 1,000 victories unless you have a real commitment, not just from coaches and athletes, but from administration. Wrestling has been important here and the administration has always supported it." Of Oklahoma State’s 10 wins in Friday’s dual, eight came with bonus points attached. Mike Benefiel pinned Cody McAninch in 2:24 and Clayton Foster was an 18-2 technical fall winner over Nick Bayer in the second period, but neither was as dominant as Jordan Oliver, who scored eight takedowns and had two nearfalls in the first period of his 22-7 technical fall bludgeoning of Casey Cruz that lasted only 2:57. Neil Erisman, Chris Perry, Blake Rosholt and Ladd Rupp all added wins by major decision. "I like the way Blake Rosholt is coming out and stepping up and maturing through the year. I think he's going to be an important part of our future here,” Smith said. “I like the way Chris Perry bounced back after a little shaky first period. Jordan Oliver, tech fall in the first period - that's a lot of points. I don't know if people realize, but that's hard to do. I don't think he could do that against my 13-year-old son. He's pretty good. Up and down the lineup, I liked Ladd Rupp, first time out. First time in our singlet, first time out, from Perry, Oklahoma. He'd been thinking about this a long time. In the featured bout of the evening, Jamal Parks scored a 3-2 win over returning All-American and ninth-ranked Justin Gaethje at 149 pounds. A first-period takedown for the Cowboy junior was the difference in his impressive victory. "Truthfully, I think I wrestled a little soft and maybe a little defensive. It was my first match back from a broken ankle,” Rupp said. “It was a good experience for me, but I am not close to where I need to be. I've got stuff to work on." A Tulsa native, Parks said being part of Oklahoma State’s 1,000th all-time victory was something he was proud of and just being part of the Cowboy wrestling program is special. EVANSTON, Ill. -- The eighth-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team extended its unbeaten streak to 72 duals with a 31-9 victory over No. 18 Northwestern (15-2, 3-2 Big Ten) Friday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, IL. The Hawkeyes won eight of 10 bouts, including upsets by sophomore Matt McDonough at 125 and redshirt freshman Derek St. John at 157, to improve to 10-0-1 (3-0 Big Ten). McDonough, who is ranked second in the nation by Intermat and WIN, and third by AWN, opened the dual at 125 against top-ranked and undefeated Brandon Precin of Northwestern. Precin led 3-0 and had the riding time point locked up mid-way through the third period when McDonough took the Wildcat senior to his back and recorded the pin in 6:11. McDonough improved to 15-1 (11-0 in duals), while handing Precin (25-1) his first loss of the season. St. John scored two third-period takedowns against Northwestern sophomore Jason Welch to pull off the 4-2 upset at 157. Welch, who is ranked sixth in the nation by WIN, seventh by Intermat and 11th by AWN, led 1-0 after the first two periods. St. John, who is ranked 14th by Intermat and 15th by AWN and WIN, scored two takedowns less than a minute apart to record the victory. St. John improved to 12-2 (11-0 in duals), while handing Welch (20-3) his third loss of the season. Also recording victories for the Hawkeyes were redshirt freshmen Tony Ramos (133) and Ethen Lofthouse (174), sophomores Mark Ballweg (141) and Grant Gambrall (184), junior Blake Rasing (Hwt.) and senior Aaron Janssen (165). Lofthouse scored seven takedowns in his 18-7 major decision over Northwestern's Brian Roddy, while Ballweg made quick work of Wildcat freshman Kaleb Friedley, scoring the pin in 2:49. Ramos and Rasing both tallied four-takedown performances in their wins, with Ramos posting a 9-3 victory over Levi Mele and Rasing notching his 20th career win with a 10-4 decision over Ben Kuhar. Ballweg (11-0) and Ramos (7-0) remain undefeated in dual competition. Janssen scored his 40th career win with a 3-0 decision over Kevin Bialka, while Gambrall scored an 8-2 decision over Aaron Jones. Northwestern's wins came at 149 and 197. Wildcat Andrew Nadhir, who is ranked 11th by AWN, 13th by Intermat and 14th by WIN, scored an 11-4 victory over unranked Hawkeye senior Matt Ballweg at 149. BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- The Edinboro wrestling team win its thrd straight match on Friday night to improve to 7-8-1 ovaerll and 2-1 in the Eastern Wrestling League. The Fighting Scots won six of the ten matches to hand Bloomsburg a 23-15 defeat. The loss dropped the Huskies to 11-4 and 0-2, respectively. Bloomsburg jumped out to a 6-0 lead as Sean Boylan pinned Bijan Banks at 4:36 at 125 lbs. Edinboro ran off wins in the next four bouts, however, to take a 16-6 lead. Eric Morrill won his seventh straight match at 133 lbs. to improve to 16-8, defeating PSAC champion Nick Wilcox 3-1. Following a scoreless first period Wilcox took a 1-0 lead with a second period escape, but Morrill answered with a late takedown, then added a third-period escape for the final margin. Morrill is ranked 20th by Amateur Wrestling News. Kasey Davis improved to 16-12 as the freshman posted an 11-7 decision over Derek Shingara at 141 lbs. Shingara led 3-2 after one period, but Davis recorded his second takedown and two near-fall points for a 7-3 lead after two periods. Davis added two more takedowns in the third period. Up-and-down Torsten Gillespie, ranked 16th by Amateur Wrestling News and 19th by InterMat, enjoyed an “up” night as he dominated his 149 lb. match with Matthew Hicks, winning by major decision 12-0. A takedown and three back points gave Gillespie a 5-0 lead after one period. The lead ballooned to 8-0 with a takedown and a stalling point in the second. He added an escape and a third takedown in the third period. That boosted Gillespie’s season record to 16-8 and gives him 94 career wins. Johnny Greisheimer followed with a fall over Frank Hickman at 157 lbs., ending the match at 2:40. The sophomore is now 18-10, while Hickman fell to 18-7. The wild first period saw Greisheimer get off to a 4-0 lead with a takedown and two near-fall points. Hickman came back with an escape and takedown to close to 4-3, but a Greisheimer reversal would put him in the position for the fall. Bloomsburg would close the match to 16-12 with decisions at 165 and 174 lbs. Josh Veltre, now 13-3, handed freshman Ethan Saylor a 4-1 defeat at 165 lbs. and Mike Dessino followed with a 6-2 decision against Chris Hrunka at 174 lbs. Veltre used a late third period takedown to snap a 1-1 tie. Hrunka led his match early 2-0, but Dessino (19-5) used three back points in the third to snap a 2-2 tie and send Hrunka to 13-14. In a rematch of the PSAC championship bout at 184 lbs., Chris Honeycutt once again won by major decision over Nate Graham (19-6), this time prevailing 14-3. Honeycutt improved to 20-0 and is ranked second by both InterMat and Amateur Wrestling News, while Graham is ranked 20th by InterMat. Honeycutt led 2-0 after one period, but expanded that in the second to 9-2 with two takedowns and three near-fall points. He added two more takedowns in the third period. Shawn Fendone, ranked 19th by Amateur Wrestling News, followed with his tenth straight win at 197 lbs. He shut out Jacob Dabashinsky 5-0. That left Fendone with a 20-8 ledger after he registered takedowns in each of the first two periods and added a point for riding time. BLACKSBURG -- The sixth-ranked Virginia Tech wrestling team won the first six bouts of the evening and held on late for an impressive 23-15 win over No. 12 Lehigh Friday night in front of over 1,600 fans inside Cassell Coliseum. Sixteenth-ranked Jarrod Garnett got the Hokies on the board with an 8-3 win over Mitch Berger at 125 pounds. Garnett used a pair of takedowns to build a 7-2 lead and used a riding time point for the win. A top-20 matchup was up next as ninth-ranked Devin Carter took on 20th-ranked Frank Cagnina. Both wrestlers picked up takedowns in the first period, but it was Carter’s reversal that gave him a brief lead before Cagnina escaped to tie it up. In the second period, Carter got a takedown late to take the lead and picked up a quick escape to start the third period to extend his lead to 9-6. He picked up three takedowns in the third period to stretch the lead and flirted with a major decision, but settled for a 16-9 win. Zach Neibert, filling in for 19th-ranked Chris Diaz at 141 pounds, took the mat next in a pivotal swing match against Stephon Dutton. Neibert, who came in with an 18-6 record, proved up to the challenge as he took down Dutton quickly and put him right to his back before pinning him just 55 seconds in for six huge team points that sent the crowd into a frenzy. At 149 pounds, eighth-ranked Brian Stephens broke a tie late to down Joey Napoli. The sophomore got a crucial takedown with over a minute left in the third period to take a 3-1 lead and hung on for the 3-2 win to make it 15-0. At 157 pounds, eighth-ranked Jesse Dong took to the mat for the Hokies against Sean Bilodeau. Dong worked hard for a takedown late in the first period and then he escaped in the second period to make it 3-0. Dong took Bilodeua down early in the third and picked up a point for riding time to win 6-0 and give Tech a 18-0 lead heading to the break. Moving to 165 pounds, 15th-ranked Pete Yates got a quick takedown against Lehigh back-up Josh Fitch to get things started right. He let him go and took him down again, right to his back and locked in the cradle. After several moments of fighting, Yates, finally picked up the pin at the 1:39 mark to keep the momentum rolling for the Hokies. Twelfth-ranked Austin Meys got the Mountain Hawks (10-6) on the board with a pin over Matt Epperly at 165 pounds. Meys got a takedown in the first period and led in the second period before Epperly got in on his legs in the second period. But Meys worked his magic and locked a cradle off the scramble in to pin Epperly at the 4:19 mark. Heading into the 184 pound match, Tech’s John Dickson could not be found and wasn’t ready in uniform, so Tech was deducted a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct to make it 23-6. He then had to take on fourth-ranked Robert Hamlin and Hamlin didn’t make life easy for Dickson. Hamlin got a takedown in the first period and led 3-1 after two stanzas. Dickson escaped in the third period to make it 3-2, but Hamlin got a takedown midway through the period to ice it. Hamlin pulled away for the 8-3 victory, but picked up only three teams points, which sealed the win for Tech. The final two matches featured top-15 wrestlers for the Mountain Hawks, starting with 12th-ranked Joe Kennedy at 197 pounds. Penny got in on several shots early on, but couldn’t convert. In the second period, Kennedy got an escape and takedown to grab a 3-0 lead and then rode him for the final 1:24 of the period. Penny got a penalty point when Kennedy was hit with his second stall warning, but Kennedy got a late takedown and a point for riding time to win 6-1. In the final match of the night, top-ranked Zach Rey downed Tech’s David Marone, 5-2 at heavyweight. Rey took him down early in the first period, but Marone battled back with a pair of escapes to tie it up in the second period. With the large crowd squarely behind the underdog, Rey escaped early on to make it 3-2 and Marone tried several shot attempts, but couldn’t get in on him and Rey got a takedown at the buzzer to win the close bout. On Sunday, Wisconsin battles Minnesota at the Sports Pavilion in Minneapolis. The dual meet is scheduled for 2 p.m. CST. The two Big Ten powers met earlier this month at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, with Wisconsin coming out on top, 19-17, in the third-place match. Below is a weight-by-weight breakdown of Sunday's dual meet. 125: Tom Kelliher (Wisconsin) vs. No. 5 Zach Sanders (Minnesota) Sanders has been a roll lately. The two-time All-American has picked up bonus points in each of his last five matches. Interestingly, Sanders' bonus point run started with a major decision over Kelliher at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals on Jan. 9. Kelliher, a redshirt sophomore, is in his second season as starter after redshirting last season. He took a lot of lumps as true freshman two seasons ago, but has gotten stronger and continued to improve in all facets of his wrestling. He has only seven matches under his belt this season, going 3-4. Last weekend, Kelliher dominated Logan Arlis of Illinois, 11-0, but fell two days later to Nebraska's David Klingsheim, 3-0. Bottom Line: This is a battle of two former Minnesota prep standouts. Sanders is wrestling at a very high level right now. Look for Sanders to do what he does best ... push the pace, attack, and put a lot of points on the scoreboard. Prediction: Sanders maj. dec. Kelliher (Minnesota +4) 133: No. 3 Tyler Graff (Wisconsin) vs. David Thorn (Minnesota) Graff, an All-American last season as a redshirt freshman, wrestles at a high pace and is relentless on his feet. Lately, opponents have tried to slow Graff down by tying him up and going more on the defensive. He was able to open it up a bit in his last match when he won 13-5 over Nebraska's Ridge Kiley. Graff's three previous wins were by four points or less. One of those wins came against Thorn, 7-3, at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals. Since that match, Thorn has won three of four, but lost his last match to No. 8 B.J. Futrell of Illinois. In the match against Futrell, Thorn was attempting to counter a leg attack and was caught in a cradle and pinned in the closing seconds of the first period. Despite getting pinned his last match, Thorn, a Junior National freestyle champion, continues to show signs of improvement in his wrestling after missing the first part of the season due to injury. Bottom Line: Graff will be looking to open up the match a little more this time around after failing to get bonus points in his last match against Thorn. This is an opportunity for the Gopher redshirt freshman to prove that his last match against Graff wasn't an aberration. Prediction: Graff dec. Thorn (Wisconsin +3) 141: Shane McQuade (Wisconsin) vs. No. 2 Mike Thorn (Minnesota) Thorn has two matches against unranked opponents before finishes the regular season with No. 1 Kellen Russell of Michigan, No. 5 Andrew Alton of Penn State, and most likely 2010 NCAA runner-up Montell Marion of Iowa. The only blemish on Thorn's record this season came from Russell, who defeated him in the Southern Scuffle finals. Thorn typically puts up bonus points against every unranked wrestler he faces, but was slowed down in his last match by Jimmy Kennedy's backup at Illinois, Daryl Thomas, who kept it to an 8-4 decision. Wisconsin has been using Danny Arnel at this weight class, but indications are that McQuade, a freshman, will get the start for the Badgers. McQuade has been competing at 125 pounds this season. He comes in with a record of 11-10 record, but has won seven of his last eight matches. Bottom Line: Anything but a Thorn pin or technical fall would be a major surprise. Prediction: Thorn pins McQuade (Minnesota +6) 149: Shawn Perry (Wisconsin) vs. Danny Zilverberg/Matt Mincey (Minnesota) Minnesota is expected to weigh in both Zilverberg and Mincey. Zilverberg, a redshirt freshman, has seen most of the action in the lineup this season. Mincey did get a start last weekend against Purdue and took advantage of the opportunity, winning by technical fall, 15-0. Zilverberg, a FILA Junior National freestyle champion, went through a tough stretch this season, losing seven straight matches, but all seven of those losses were to ranked wrestlers. He has won his last two matches and comes in with a 13-9 season mark. Perry, who is filling in for highly-ranked Cole Schmitt (who had an appendicitis and is expected to be back next week), has been the definition of a team player this season. The Badgers have used Perry in four different weight classes this season ... 149, 157, 165, and 174. He picked up two wins at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals wrestling at 157 pounds ... One of those wins came at a critical time against Minnesota's Alec Ortiz, which helped propel the Badgers over the Gophers. Perry has won three straight matches and is coming off a 6-2 victory over Nebraska's Ross Grande. Interestingly, it's the identical score of Zilverberg's victory over Grande this season. Bottom Line: This is a swing match that could go either way. The home crowd could give Zilverberg the edge. Prediction: Zilverberg dec. Perry (Minnesota +3) 157: Kalvin York (Wisconsin) vs. Joe Grygelko (Minnesota) York, a redshirt freshman, ignited the Badgers last weekend against Nebraska by pinning Cody Compton in the dual meet's opening match. He has been up and down this season. Prior to his win over Compton. York had lost his six previous matches, but two of those were up at 174 pounds when he was filling in for the injured Ben Jordan. He had a tremendous prep career, going 168-12 at Belleville High School in Wisconsin. York's greatest accomplishments in the latter part of his high school career came in Greco-Roman, where he reached the Junior National Greco finals twice, winning a national title in 2008. Grygelko wrestles hard, but has struggled. He has dropped his last seven matches. Grygelko battled No. 20 Colton Salazar of Purdue, a Big Ten runner-up, to a 5-3 match last Friday, but was hammered two days later by true freshman Jackson Morse of Illinois, 11-2. Bottom Line: Both wrestlers have had their struggles this season, but both fight for every position. This should be a competitive match. Prediction: York dec. Grygelko (Wisconsin +3) 165: John Prezzia (Wisconsin) vs. No. 12 Cody Yohn (Minnesota) Yohn, an NCAA qualifier last season, took a surprise loss last weekend to Purdue redshirt freshman Kyle Mosier. In that match, Yohn was dominated for two and a half periods before getting pinned by Mosier. Yohn bounced back two days later to defeat Conrad Polz of Illinois, 1-0. He has been consistent this season, with 20-plus wins already, but didn't look like himself last weekend. With NCAA champion Andrew Howe injured and out of the lineup, Prezzia, a redshirt freshman, gets the start. He is 4-1 this season, but all five of those matches came at 157 pounds. He has not competed since Nov. 21 when he defeated North Carolina's Corey Mock in overtime. Prezzia was a Pennsylvania state champion and Junior National freestyle champion. Bottom Line: If Yohn opens up and wrestles to his ability, he should have win this match convincingly. But if Yohn wrestles like he did last weekend, this could be a competitive match. Prediction: Yohn maj. dec. Prezzia (Minnesota +4) 174: No. 19 Ben Jordan (Wisconsin) vs. No. 8 Scott Glasser (Minnesota) Glasser is putting together another strong season marked by consistency. His only losses since the Southern Scuffle, where he placed fourth, have come to No. 1 Jon Reader of Iowa State and No. 3 Mack Lewnes of Cornell. He picked up a 4-2 victory last weekend against three-time NCAA qualifier Luke Manuel of Purdue. The 19th-ranked Jordan returned to the Badger lineup last weekend against Nebraska after being held out of the lineup for three weeks due to injury. Jordan grinded out a 2-1 victory over Nebraska's Caleb Kolb in his last outing, but seemed a bit lethargic despite the victory. He comes in with a nice record of 15-4, but has gone 0-3 against ranked wrestlers. Bottom Line: Glasser is performing at a higher level than Jordan right now and should win this match. Prediction: Glasser dec. Jordan (Minnesota +3) 184: No. 3 Travis Rutt (Wisconsin) vs. No. 9 Kevin Steinhaus (Minnesota) This is perhaps the most anticipated matchup of the dual meet. These two Minnesota natives met at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals earlier this month, with Rutt coming out on top, 3-2. Rutt, a strong, powerful wrestler, has been one of the most improved wrestlers in the country this season. After going 17-13 last season, Rutt has started this season 23-1 with several victories over ranked wrestlers. His lone loss came in the finals of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational to Cornell's Steve Bosak, 2-0. Steinhaus is among the nation's top freshmen this season, exceeding the expectations of many coming into the season. He has established himself as a legitimate All-American threat this season after beating several ranked wrestlers. Steinhaus took a loss last weekend to Purdue's A.J. Kissel. In that match, Kissell jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Steinhaus battled back, scoring a takedown off a duckunder with 30 seconds left to tie the match at 3-3. But Kissel added a late escape to win the match, 4-3. Bottom Line: Expect to see another tight, hard-fought battle between two of the nation's top 184-pounders. Prediction: Rutt dec. Steinhaus (Wisconsin +3) 197: No. 2 Trevor Brandvold/Derrick Borlie (Wisconsin) vs. Joe Nord/No. 4 Sonny Yohn (Minnesota) There is a lot of uncertainty at this weight class. Both teams are expected to weigh in two wrestlers. If Brandvold and Yohn take the mat, it would be a rematch of the Big Ten finals and pit two returning All-Americans against each other. But both wrestlers have been off the mat recovering from injuries. Brandvold has not competed since a dual meet against Northern Iowa on Dec. 11, while Yohn hasn't competed since the Southern Scuffle, which took place Dec. 29-30. Brandvold and Yohn met three times last season, with Brandvold winning all three meetings. Borlie, a redshirt freshman, has done a nice job filling in for Brandvold. He went 4-0 at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals and is already a 20-match winner this season. Nord started the season 7-2, but has gone a through a rough stretch and comes into Sunday's dual meet on a five-match losing streak. Borlie defeated Nord, 8-2, earlier this season. Bottom Line: Look for Brandvold to make his return to the lineup against the Gophers. Minnesota will likely rest Yohn for one more week and send Nord out against the Badgers. Prediction: Brandvold maj. dec. Nelson was a 215-pounder in high school, while Bugenhagen was a 184-pounder two seasons ago for the Badgers. Nelson is extremely tough to score on, but sometimes allows inferior opponents to stay in matches with him because of a hesitancy to open up on his feet. He has suffered only three losses this season. Bugenhagen started this season 10-0. He placed fourth at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and went 2-2 at the Midlands Championships. SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - No. 2 Augustana jumped out to a 12-0 lead and won six matches by decision to defeat No. 3 St. Cloud State 18-13 Thursday evening in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual in Sioux Falls, S.D. Augustana, which defeated the Huskies 18-15 in non-conference action earlier this month, moves to 10-1 (4-0 NSIC). SCSU is now 14-2 (1-1 NSIC). The Vikings are now one of two teams in the NSIC with 4-0 conference marks; the other, Minnesota State, visits the Elmen Center tomorrow at 7 p.m. The Mavericks are ranked No. 7 in Division II. Augustana wasted little time in front of a crowd of more than 1,000, winning the dual's first four matches. Al Meger began with a 6-0 victory over Zach Stewart at 125 pounds, and Jason Jeremiason added to the Viking lead with a 6-4 win against Westy Hanson. At 141 pounds, Jay Sherer, ranked No. 4 nationally, used a takedown with six seconds left in the overtime period to edge Gabe Suarez 3-1. No. 8 Nate Herda also picked up a win by sudden victory at 149 pounds. The sophomore knocked off Jacob D. Horn, who is ranked No. 4, with a takedown at the 31-second mark of the overtime period. The Huskies dispatched No. 5-ranked John Sundgren at 157 pounds to pick up their first victory of the evening. Sundgren used a big first period to notch a 10-3 win over No. 2-ranked Marcus Edgington. The 165-pound match also featured a pair of nationally ranked wrestlers. No. 2 Tad Merritt picked up a 7-4 victory over Augustana's Gavin Nelson, ranked No. 6 in the country. Carl Serck answered for the Vikings at 174 pounds, using two takedowns and a three-point nearfall in the first period to knock off No. 8 Shamus O'Grady 9-2. Trailing 15-6, SCSU had a chance to significantly close the gap at 184 pounds. The Huskies' Mic Berg nearly pinned Tom Davies in the first period. Davies, though, fought off the near-pin and worked Berg for the next two periods before dropping the 6-4 decision. Ty Copsey's ensuing win at 197 pounds sealed the victory for the Vikings. No. 2-ranked Copsey recorded a 4-0 win by decision over Luke Munkelwitz to put his squad ahead 18-9. No. 1-ranked Jacob Kahnke closed the dual with a win for SCSU in the heavyweight tilt, beating Lance Peters 16-5. Head coach Jason Reitmeier said he expected a close contest with the Huskies, whose two losses this season have been to his Vikings. "It's going to be tight every time," said Reitmeier. "We need to find a way to finish matches a little better; we need to distance ourselves. (Our wins) are never going to be major decisions or pins--it's always going to be dog fight." RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State built a big early lead Thursday, thanks to two pins and two Duke forfeits, then cruised to a 30-15 Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling victory over the Blue Devils at Reynolds Coliseum. The Wolfpack won for the seventh time in its last 10 dual matches to improve to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in the ACC. Duke dropped to 1-3-1 overall and 0-2 in conference action. “I was pleased with our tempo and our pacing tonight,” Wolfpack coach Carter Jordan said. “We were aggressive. We lost some of that at the end, but I think that was due in part to inexperience.” The Wolfpack took a 12-0 lead after two matches thanks to Duke forfeits at 125 and 133 pounds. In the first actual bout of the evening, NC State’s Darrius Little overcame an early takedown by Mike Bell, built a 4-2 lead after two periods, and dominated the third period for an 8-2 decision. Little won his seventh match in a row and his 11th in his last 12 to improve to 22-6. The decision pushed the Wolfpack’s team lead to 15-0. Darrion Caldwell followed Little to the mat for the Wolfpack and pinned A.J. Guardado in 98 seconds to give NC State a 21-0 advantage. Caldwell improved to 7-0 with six pins for the season. The victory was the 101st of his career and the pin was his 56th. Caldwell is second to Sylvester Terkay (1990-93) in NC State history in both categories. Terkay won 122 matches with 64 pins in his career. Caldwell’s pin was his 48th first-period pin. No sooner had Caldwell pinned Guardado than freshman Matt Nereim, wrestling up a weight, pinned Duke’s Ryan Harding in 76 seconds to lift the NC State lead to 27-0. Nereim improved to 11-2 on the season. The match was his first at 157. He is 10-2 at 149 and has won nine matches in a row. “Darrion looked like Darrion,” Jordan said. “What else can you say. He’s just a special wrestler. We’ve been careful in bringing him back from his shoulder injury, but he hasn’t shown any ill effects. And for a freshman, Matt Nereim has been spectacular. We’ve been using him at 149 while we’ve brought Darrion along from his injury. Tonight was his first match at 157 and he looked terrific.” Duke got on the scoreboard with Willy Mello’s 8-6 decision over the Pack’s Colin Genthert at 165 pounds. Mello took control of the match with a reversal and three-point near fall in the first period, then staved off a third-period comeback attempt by Genthert. The Blue Devils trimmed the team lead to 27-9 when Bret Klopp pinned the Pack’s Nijel Jones in 1:02 in the 174-pound match. The Blue Devils reached double digits on the scoreboard and cut the Wolfpack lead to 27-12 with Diego Bencomo’s 4-1 decision over Quinton Godley at 184 pounds. Bencomo overcame a 1-0 lead in the third period with an escape, a takedown and a point for riding time. Godley, wrestling his third match at 184, dropped to 18-11 overall. He is 1-2 at 184 and 17-9 at 174. Duke cut the NC State lead to 27-15 with Brian Self’s 3-1 decision over KaRonne Jones at 197 pounds. Eloheim Palma ended the bout with a 6-4 decision over Andrew Fulk to lift the Wolfpack to the final margin of victory to 30-15. Palma took the early lead with a pair of takedowns in the first period and put the match away with an escape and riding time in the third period. “Eloheim has struggled lately, so he needed that,” Jordan said. “He’s so intense and works so hard, and he’s been frustrated because things haven’t clicked for him lately. He needs to keep working and fighting his way through it. Kansas City, Mo. -- University of Illinois Associate Head Wrestling Coach Carl Perry has been named the National Director of FCA Wrestling. Perry has been involved in the University of Illinois wrestling program for thirteen years both as a champion competitor and coach. Beginning May 1, 2011, he will serve as the full-time national director for FCA Wrestling, which is in its second year as a national ministry of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). FCA Wrestling launched as an official Sport-Specific Ministry in 2009 and has seen tremendous impact in the wrestling community. Sport-Specific Ministry impacts specific sports communities for Christ by ministering to coaches and athletes united around a particular sport. FCA has established national ministries in Baseball, Cheerleading, Endurance, Golf, Hockey, Lacrosse, Motocross, Skateboarding, Surfing and Wrestling. “I am excited about this new direction for my life and look forward to seeing what God is going to do through FCA Wrestling,” said Perry. “I believe that this ministry will change the way wrestlers and coaches compete on the mat and more importantly in life. This can only be done, however, through the active involvement (on many levels) of wrestlers, coaches, parents and fans. Just as a team, we need to come together with a common function—serving God through the sport of wrestling.” Perry is in his ninth year as a member of the Illinois wrestling staff and second as associate head coach. A former Illini and NCAA champion competitor, Perry was a four-year varsity starter for the Illini from 1996-2000. He was promoted to associate head coach prior to the 2009-10 season. “The sport of wrestling is better because of Carl Perry. We are truly blessed that he has chosen to lead this program. I am confident that Carl will bring to his role as leader of FCA Wrestling the same passion and tenacity that made him a great competitor and coach. Carl will without question positively change the lives of many within our sport,” said Rich Bender, Executive Director of USA Wrestling. A 2000 NCAA champion at 141 pounds, Perry wrapped up his career as a two-time All-American and a two-time team captain. As a four-time NCAA qualifier, he consistently ranked among the top 10 at 141 pounds nationwide. Perry also compiled a 13-6 career record at the NCAA Championships. He finished his Illinois career in the top 20 of career wins and career winning percentage with 98 victories and a .748 winning percentage. He also helped the 2000 Illini squad to the best dual winning percentage in school history (.933), as the team was 14-1 in duals that season. Perry earned his bachelor’s degree in applied life studies in May 2001 and will complete a master’s degree from Lincoln Christian University in organizational leadership in August of 2011. He and his wife Jamie have a daughter, Breanna, and a son, Bryce. The family resides in Champaign. GREENSBORO, N.C. -- UNCG's Caylor Williams pinned Appalachian State's Paul Glover in the waning seconds of the first period to pick up a crucial six points followed by a 13-6 decision in the favor of heavyweight Peter Sturgeon as UNCG squeaked by Appalachian State, 21-20, in Southern Conference play on Wednesday evening in Fleming Gymnasium. The Spartans won their third consecutive dual, boosting their overall record to 5-7 and moving to 3-0 in the conference. With the loss, Appalachian State falls to 6-8-1 overall and 0-2 in the SoCon. UNCG is 3-0 in the conference for the first time since the 2006-07 season. The evening started off at the 125-pound weight class between UNCG's Manny Ramirez and Appalachian State's Tony Gravely. Gravely was swift of foot and proved too much for Ramirez as Gravely scored two three-point near falls and two takedowns to score a major decision, 16-5, and give the Mountaineers an early 4-0 lead. UNCG would respond at the 133-pound class thanks to a 14-3 major decision from Jamel Johnson. Johnson controlled the action over Acton Pifer using multiple takedowns and near falls to get the win. Knotted up at 4 a piece, the Mountaineers' Mike Kessler tangled with Michael Crowley. After scoring a takedown and getting a near fall, Kessler led 5-0 after the first period. Kessler never relinquished the lead as he defeated Crowley, 7-2. At 141 pounds, No. 17 Ivan Lopouchanski collected his 30th win on the year by handling Russell Benner. Lopouchanski brought the Spartan faithful to their feet multiple times as he scored 10 takedowns and secured four critical points, giving UNCG its first lead of the night, 8-7 UNCG's Matt Barbo and the Mountaineers' John Blakely were locked in a tight match until Blakely scored a takedown in the third to win the 157-pound bout, 6-2. This week's Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week, Kyle Blevins (165), scored a 12-2 major decision over UNCG's Brett Miller. At 174 pounds, Byron Sigmon throttled Carter Downs, 14-1. Sigmon, the current active wins leader for the Spartans, proved to be relentless as he went up 12-0 before allowing an escape. With the team score 14-12 in Appalachian State's favor, the Mountaineers sent Austin Trotman to the mat to face off against Elijah Adams. Trotman used a quick takedown and a cradle to score a pin only 90 seconds into the match. Down by eight with two bouts to go, UNCG used a little magic as Williams (197) proved too quick for Paul Glover. Williams scored a takedown and shortly thereafter pinned Glover in front of the Mountaineers' bench. As the final bout was set to get underway, the Mountaineers led by two. Graham seeks rebound, while Blair seeks revenge Another Saturday night dual meet starting at 7:00 p.m. EST, and it's another big-time high school matchup. Based on the InterMat team rankings as of Jan. 19, it is No. 2 Blair Academy, New Jersey hosting No. 3 St. Paris Graham, Ohio. Blair Academy comes into this dual meet off a dominating 5-0 day at the NHSCA Final Four in which they lost only nine individual matches. On the other hand, Graham comes into the match after losing a 27-25 heartbreaker to No. 5 St. Edward, Ohio. Last season, Blair Academy traveled to Graham as the consensus number one, but got absolutely pummeled. The Buccaneers are in search of serious revenge on a special day for Blair Academy wrestling, as they dedicate their wrestling room in honor of long-time head coach Jeff Buxton. New Jersey All-Star Classic matches set for Sunday Every year on the last Sunday of January, there is an All-Star Classic held at Brick Memorial High School in New Jersey where some of the state's best wrestlers match up against one another in an exhibition showcase for the fans prior to the state tournament series. Vacaville starting journey on a second thousand victories With a 30-24 dual meet victory against De La Salle, California this past Saturday, the Vacaville High School wrestling program out of the San Joaquin Section in California earned its 1,000th win in program history. The Bulldogs have been wrestling since 1961. Yesterday, Vacaville traveled to Napa for a league dual meet, will be competing at the Puma Classic on Saturday, and close out regular season competition one week from yesterday in a league dual meet at William C. Wood High School. Change in plans for Campolattano Based on published reports from multiple outlets in New Jersey, Andrew Campolattano (Bound Brook, New Jersey) -- ranked No. 1 at 215 pounds, and No. 11 in the Class of 2011 -- has withdrawn his verbal commit to play football at Rutgers University. Instead, Campolattano will pursue wrestling in college, and it is essentially open season among the nation's top programs in seeking to secure his services. The three-time state champion has a career high school record of 151-1. Should he win fourteen more matches this year, he would hold the all-time wins record in the Garden State; Frank Cagnina (Bergen Catholic/Queen of Peace) graduated last year with a 164-4 record, and is having a spectacular true freshman season for Lehigh at 133 pounds. Presuming Campolattano wins a state title this year at 215 pounds, the projected college 197 will join Mike Grey (Delbarton) as the only four-time state champions in New Jersey history; Grey is currently a senior at Cornell.
