Seven Big Macs wrestlers won all four of their matches, as Canon-McMillan swept through four dual meets winning at least nine weight classes in every single meet. Undefeated wrestlers included Dalton Macri (113), Colton Shorts (126), Sammy Minor (138), No. 8 Solomon Chishko (145), No. 3 Cody Wiercioch (170), Alex Campbell (215), and No. 14 Cody Klempay (285). Canon McMillan won all fourteen matches in their 74-0 opening round win over Chantilly, Va. Then, they won twelve of fourteen weight classes in a 64-9 quarterfinal victory over Caesar Rodney, Del. The lone notable result in that round was a 4-1 victory for Colton Shorts (Canon McMillan) over Kaleb Lemaire at 126 pounds, a match featuring wrestlers that have placed at major national level high school tournaments this year. The semifinal round featured a 44-22 win over No. 36 McDonogh, Md., a match in which the Big Macs only won nine weight classes. Notable results included a 3-1 victory for No. 8 Chishko (Canon McMillan) against No. 15 Jack Clark at 145 pounds, freshman Myles Martin (McDonogh) upending Powerade placer Dario Dobbin by a 1-0 score at 152, and No. 14 Klempay (Canon McMillan) beating National Prep placer Roman Braglio 10-4 at 285. In the championship round, Canon McMillan won ten weight classes in their 47-18 win over No. 13 Christiansburg, Va. Notable about this match was the lineup movements that precluded potentially relevant matches at 113 and 120. Canon McMillan took a forfeit at 113 against No. 10 J.R. Wert, as Dalton Macri bumped up to 120 and earned an 11-3 major decision against state champion Kyle Dulaney; while Christiansburg inserted Gabe Lumpp into the lineup at 126, but he was pinned by Shorts, with No. 7 Joey Dance getting a 13-4 major decision at 132. Also of note in this match was the 12-4 major decision by No. 3 Wiercioch (Canon McMillan) over Ironman placer Tyler Miles at 170 pounds. Additionally relevant dual meets over the two days included the a 35-30 quarterfinal victory for No. 36 McDonogh, Md. over Timber Creek, N.J., who was ranked first in the state by The Star-Ledger; No. 13 Christiansburg, Va. upended No. 44 South Plainfield, N.J. 37-29 in the semifinal round; No. 44 South Plainfield bounced back from their semifinal loss to absolutely pummel Timber Creek 56-10 in the consolation semifinal; then finally No. 44 South Plainfield beating No. 36 McDonogh 37-32 for third place. Key results in the McDonogh vs. Timber Creek match included two-time state placer Brandon Keller (Timber Creek) earning a 10-3 victory over National Prep placer Xavi Ramos at 132 pounds, while McDonogh capped their rally from 27-0 down with a pin from Roman Braglio at 285 against a reserve wrestler because returning state placer Greg Webb was not present on the Timber Creek roster for this event. Notable in the Christiansburg vs. South Plainfield dual was No. 10 Wert (Christiansburg) bumping up to 120 pounds to defeat No. 11 Troy Heilman 4-1, Dulaney (Christiansburg) coming through in the previous match with a 7-3 victory over Ray Jazikoff, a Super32 Challenge finals rematch at 126 pounds in which No. 6 Anthony Ashnault (South Plainfield) just took it to No. 7 Dance in a 7-2 victory, and Scott Del Vecchio (South Plainfield) upending returning state runner-up Dallas Smith at 132. Interesting matches in the South Plainfield vs. Timber Creek dual included a battle of state placers at 120 in which No. 11 Heilman (South Plaifield) beat Ricky Carter 2-0 and state qualifier Del Vecchio (South Plainfield) beating two-time state placer two-time state placer Keller 5-1 at 132. Ohio's best to battle: No. 7 St. Paris Graham at No. 2 St. Edward The following are the projected matchups: 106: Eli Stickley (SPG) vs. L.J. Bentley (St. Ed's) 113: Eli Seipel vs. Alex Moore 120: No. 5 Ryan Taylor vs. Colin Heffernan 126: Micah Jordan vs. No. 2 Dean Heil 132: Nate Henkle vs. No. 8 Edgar Bright 138: Chase Crabtree vs. Nick Barber 145: No. 13 Blake Kastl vs. Markus Scheidel 152: No. 1 Bo Jordan vs. Matt Van Curen 160: No. 4 Isaac Jordan vs. Jacob Davis 170: Lane Thomas vs. No. 6 Mark Martin 182: No. 4 Huston Evans vs. No. 11 Domenic Abounader 195: Josh Couchman vs. No. 20 James Suvak 220: Anthony Welty vs. No. 14 Ty Walz 285: Darin Bovey vs. No. 4 Greg Kuhar/Joe Belford St. Johns outlasts Detroit Catholic Central at Super Duals With No. 28 Montini Catholic, Ill. unable to make it out of the Chicagoland area, due to a major snowstorm, for the trip to Metro Detroit, the DCC Super Duals was reduced from three showdowns involving nationally ranked teams to just one -- the match between No. 3 St. Johns, Mich. and No. 15 Detroit Catholic Central, Mich. Like last year, the squads split the match count 7-7. However, also like last year, the margin was one driven by the bonus point generating ability of the No. 3 Red Wings, who won 31-21. Detroit Catholic Central won the opening three matches of the dual meet to take a 12-0 lead. Due to the absence of heavyweight Bob Coe, who placed fourth at Medina in the end of December, the Shamrocks had to bump wrestlers in up in the first two matches of the dual meet, 215 and 285, to cover that hole. However, Kevin Beazley came through with a pin against Blake Cooper in 34 seconds at 215 pounds, with Jay Peterson getting a 2-0 victory over Ben Proctor. Then at the turn, Trevor Zdebski earned a 9-2 victory over Drew Wixsom in a battle of freshmen at 103 pounds. St. Johns countered with a 16-8 major decision from No. 13 Zac Hall over Myles Amine at 112 pounds and a 6-0 decision from freshman Logan Massa over T.J. Fagan at 119 to reduce the Shamrock lead to 12-7. Detroit Catholic Central then countered with a 4-3 victory from Ken Bade over Jacob Schmitt at 125 pounds in a match featuring elite juniors, each of whom have won a state title. Then, the Shamrocks extended their lead to 18-7 after Malik Amine upended Rory Bender 4-2 at 130. Three consecutive Red Wings wins reduced their deficit to 18-16. At 135 pounds, Brant Schafer earned an 8-3 decision victory over Andrew Thompson, then Josh Pennell earned a 6-2 decision victory over Logan Marcicki in a battle of highly regarded underclassmen at 140, while Riley Hanson did his best job of damage control to reduce No. 2 Ben Whitford to just a 22-14 major decision at 145. St. Johns was deducted a team point during this string of matches as well. Detroit Catholic Central then responded with a 1-0 victory from No. 19 (at 145) Alec Mooradian to earn their last victory of the day, and extend the lead to 21-16 after 152 pounds. Mooradian outlasted Travis Curley on the strength of an escape and his ability to ride Curley out during the period Curley had choice and chose down. No. 20 Jordan Wohlfert finally gave the Red Wings a lead, 22-21, with his first period pin over Nick Mason at the 1:44 mark. With the Shamrocks having to flex their lineup at this point, they sent an overmatched Nick Giese onto the mats to face No. 1 Taylor Massa at 170, and Massa got the job done with a pin in 40 seconds to cinch the dual meet. St. Johns led 28-21 heading into the final match, where two-time state third placer Payne Hayden outlasted state runner-up Andrew Garcia 7-2 for the final margin. Garcia was wrestling up at least one and arguably two weight classes from his normal lineup position. Two other notable individual match outcomes came from the dual meet involving No. 3 St Johns and Solon, Ohio. At 113 pounds, state champion Brandon Thompson (Solon) earned a 4-3 upset victory over No. 13 Zac Hall, while at 145 it was No. 2 Whitford (St. Johns) earning an 8-3 victory over No. 11 Anthony Collica in a match closer than the score would indicate. Whitford led just 4-3 late in the third period before getting a takedown and two near fall points to seal the final victory. Photo/Dave Jedlicka,jedicheetah.com Related: Photos (Dave Jedlicka, jedicheetah.com) CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Five match wins Sunday powered the Wyoming Cowboy wrestling team to a team victory over No. 16 Oregon State on the road, 23-22. The dual ended with the score tied at 22, but 13th-ranked Wyoming (2-2 overall) earned the victory on criteria, scoring 34 match points to Oregon State's 30. That added an additional team point. It was Wyoming's first win over the Beavers since 2003-04, when the Cowboys defeated OSU 17-16. Oregon State moved to 5-2 overall. “It was a pretty wild dual,†Wyoming coach Mark Branch said. “It didn't go down by any means how I thought it might. But between two good teams, to have four pins and really competitive matchups, duals get that way. You feel lucky to be on the right side of those.†The dual began at 125 pounds, with No. 14 Michael Martinez of UW and Pat Rollins. Rollins took an early shot but a nifty defensive move by Martinez prevented any points. The senior then worked his way into a takedown with less than a minute left in the first period for the 2-0 lead. But Rollins was in the top position to start the second period and took advantage, pinning Martinez at the 3:36 mark. Oregon State took a 6-0 lead in the dual after one match. No. 16 Zach Zehner, a redshirt freshman, took on James Roberts in the 133-pound match. Zehner earned a takedown less than 15 seconds in for a 2-0 lead. A Roberts escape seconds later made the score 2-1. Zehner then used his aggressiveness to earn another takedown, and controlled Roberts for nearly two minutes, but Roberts earned an escape to make it 4-2. Zehner then lifted Roberts off the mat and threw him for another takedown to take the 6-2 lead into the second period. Roberts earned a takedown, but Zehner's reversal and subsequent pin at the 3:22 mark gave him the win and the team score was tied at 6. “I was proud of the guys who responded,†Branch said. “When you give up a pin in a match we feel like we're going to win and we're ahead, that can affect how the rest of the team performs. Zach came right out and got it back for us. He wrestled great.†Senior Chase Smith got in on his first dual action of the season at 141 pounds and took on fifth-ranked Mike Mangrum of Oregon State. The action was frenetic to start the bout, and Smith earned a takedown to take the 2-0 lead heading into the second period with 1:44 of advantage time. Smith's aggressiveness earned him 3:27 of riding time in the second period, but Mangrum followed up with an escape and a takedown to take a 3-2 lead into the third period. Mangrum rode out the third period, but the riding-time point made the wrestlers even at 3 heading into extra time. The wrestlers failed to score in the first minute, and it headed to the tiebreaker session. Mangrum rode Smith for all 30 seconds in the first session, and Smith did the same in the following 30-second round. Another minute was added to the clock, and Mangrum earned a takedown 30 seconds into the sudden-death period. Mangrum's 5-3 decision gave the Beavers a 9-6 lead in the dual. Redshirt freshman Brandon Richardson took on OSU's 19th-ranked Scott Sakaguchi battled in the 149-pound match. Both wrestlers took aggressive shots early, but defense prevailed in the first period and the session ended in a 0-0 tie. Sakaguchi rode Richardson the entire second period and earned two near-fall points to take the 2-0 advantage into the last period. Sakaguchi then scored an escape point and added a takedown for the 6-0 win with riding time. Oregon State led 12-6 after four matches. It was redshirt freshman Dakota Friesth and No. 18 R.J. Pena of Oregon State mixing it up in the 157-pound match, and Pena struck first with a takedown. Seconds later, Friesth escaped to make it 2-1. Pena went right back on top for a two-point takedown and he earned three near-fall points with 35 seconds to go in the period for the 7-1 lead. Pena then pinned Friesth at the 2:50 mark for OSU's 18-6 lead in the team score. Wyoming senior Shane Onufer, ranked fourth, took on Joe Latham in the 165-pound bout, and Onufer built an early 2-0 lead with a takedown. Onufer gave up an escape to work for more offense and made the score 2-1 heading into the second period. Onufer then added an escape point and worked for a stall point against Latham. Onufer added a takedown for the 6-1 lead with 30 seconds left in the second period. Another stall point was added to Onufer's score for the 7-1 lead, and with riding time Onufer took home an 8-1 win. Wyoming trailed 18-9 heading into the seventh match of the day. Pat Martinez, a sophomore, and Cody Weishoff of OSU tangled in the 174-pound match. Martinez had a takedown 48 seconds into the first period, but Weishoff made it 2-1 with an escape. Martinez added two more points with a takedown and made it 4-1 after one round. Martinez's reversal made it 6-1, but Weishoff earned a reversal to make it 6-3 shortly thereafter. At the start of the third period, Weishoff's escape made it 6-4, but Martinez worked for another takedown for the 8-4 lead, which was the final margin. The score went to 18-12 OSU with three matches to go. UW's top-ranked senior Joe LeBlanc and Ty Vinson dueled in the 184-pound match. LeBlanc and Vinson scrambled for the first minute and a half, and LeBlanc eventually worked for a takedown and the 2-0 lead. LeBlanc earned two near-fall points for the 4-0 lead after one period. After choosing down to start the second, LeBlanc's reversal and subsequent pin at 3:37 evened up the team score at 18. “Joe came out and got a big pin that we had to have. He knew that when he stepped out there,†Branch said. Wyoming redshirt junior Alfonso Hernandez, ranked eighth, and No. 16 Taylor Meeks took to the mats at 197 pounds in the only match of the day pairing ranked wrestlers. Hernandez got a takedown and two near-fall points to make it 4-0 with 58 seconds left in the first period. Meeks earned an escape point, but Hernandez stayed on the attack and got another takedown to make it 6-1 after the first round. Meeks got an escape point and the score moved to 6-2 just moments into the second period. Hernandez worked for another takedown for the 8-2 advantage. Yet another escape by Meeks made the score 8-3 shortly after. But Hernandez's takedown made it 10-3 just before the second period expired. His escape and subsequent takedown gave him a 13-3 lead, but Meeks made it 13-4 with an escape. But Hernandez got another takedown for the 15-4 lead. After Hernandez allowed an escape it was 15-5, but with riding time it was Hernandez earning the 16-5 major decision. Four team points gave Wyoming a 22-18 lead heading into the final bout. “Fonz stepped out against a very talented kid and wrestled great,†Branch said of Hernandez. In the heavyweight bout, UW junior L.J. Helbig and fifth-ranked Clayton Jack stepped on the mat, knowing anything more than a major decision would spell doom for Wyoming. The two battled for one round, and Jack got a takedown for the 2-0 lead right before the buzzer sounded. Jack's escape point made it 3-0 shortly into the second period, and Helbig was called for stalling for a 4-0 deficit. Jack earned a takedown for the 6-0 lead, and added more poitns for the 8-0 lead heading into the third. Jack got another takedown for the 10-0 lead. Helbig earned an escape point, but Jack had another takedown for the 12-1 advantage. Riding time gave Jack the 13-1 major decision, which tied the team score at 22. “L.J. wrestled smart and fought hard, and he didn't do anything (to put us in a bad position),†Branch said. The team score then went to the criteria including number of falls, number of technical falls, major decisions and number of match points scored. The tiebreaker came down to total match points scored, which was a 34-30 Wyoming advantage. That gave Wyoming an additional team point to win 23-22. Minnesota came swinging out of the gate early this afternoon in West Lafayette, Ind., and never looked back, as they shutout Purdue 40-0. It was the 24th time the Gophers have won by a shutout since head coach J Robinson has been at Minnesota and the fifth time they have shutout the Boilermakers. The last time Minnesota shutout Purdue on the road was in 1966, when they defeated the Boilermakers 30-0. “Anytime you shutout your opponent it is exciting,†Robinson said. “We wrestled with an aggressive attitude today. I think the biggest thing is it helps our guys with confidence and that is important as we go down this last stretch of the season.†The dual started out at 133 lbs. where Chris Dardanes picked up a 7-6 decision over Cashe Quiroga. Both wrestlers went down to the wire trading a few takedowns and escape points, but Dardanes was able to hold in in the end. Dardanes twin brother Nick hit the mat next for the Gophers and took down Brandon Nelson of Purdue, pretty easily with a 12-4 major decision. Dardanes recorded 2:05 min of riding time which gave him the bonus point in the end. Fresh off scoring a fall on Friday night at Illinois, Dylan Ness dominated the Boilermakers Ivan Lopouchanski, in route to an 11-4 decision. Following Ness, Alec Ortiz continued his hot wrestling after scoring a 5-3 decision over Tom Churchard. Ortiz let a 4-0 lead slip in the third period, but fought the entire match and was able to pull out the victory for his second win of the weekend. “Nick (Dardanes), Dylan (Ness) and Alec (Oritz) have all made great progress,†Robinson said. “Nick is getting better and is learning how to control the mat while Dylan has picked up the intensity lately and Alec is beginning to figure things out and is bringing all the little things together.†Cody Yohn closed out the first half of action for the Gophers with a 4-1 decision over Kyle Mosier. It was a good win for Yohn who came up short in Friday night's win at Illinois. After the intermission Minnesota dominated the final matches by picking up bonus points in all five matches. Freshman Logan Storley continues to open up eyes around the country and he did so today by picking up a 10-1 major decision over Drake Stein. Kevin Steinhaus was next to take the mat for Minnesota and had no trouble with Braden Atwood as he picked up a 17-5 major decision. At 197 lbs. Scott Schiller stepped in the inner circle in place of Sonny Yohn. Schiller gave the Gophers even more to celebrate, after he posted a 21-6 win by a technical fall. Tony Nelson pinned Roger Vukobratovich with 50 seconds left in the first period and No. 1 ranked Zach Sanders won by a 19-4 technical fall over Luke Schroeder, to close out the Gophers afternoon in West Lafayette. Minnesota will be home a week from today when they host Wisconsin in the annual “Border Battle†at the Sports Pavilion. Action is set to get underway at Noon. MADISON, Wis. -- The third-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions put on a clinic against Wisconsin on Sunday in Madison, hammering the home-standing Badgers to the tune of a 43-0 shutout. The shut out marked the first time Wisconsin had been shut out in over half a century and was the first shutout for Penn State in a Big Ten dual meet. Coming off a 38-3 dismantling of Northwestern in Evanston two days ago, Penn State continued its dominating road wrestling. True freshman Nico Megaludis (Murrsyville, Pa.), ranked No. 10 at 125, once again gave Penn State a bolt of energy out of the gates, pinning Wisconsin's Austin Hietpas at the 6:05 mark. Sophomore Frank Martellotti (Pittsburgh, Pa.) followed that up with a 14-6 major decision over Shane McQuade at 133 and junior Bryan Pearsall (Lititz, Pa.) downed UW's Thomas Glenn 4-2 at 141, giving Penn State an early 13-0 lead. All-American Frank Molinaro (Barnegat, N.J.), ranked No. 1 at 149, had no trouble with No. 9 Cole Schmitt of Wisconsin, posting a 12-0 major decision. The shutout was Molinaro's second of the weekend and his tenth of the year. Red-shirt freshman Dylan Alton (Mill Hall, Pa.), ranked No. 9 at 157, closed out the first half with a solid 11-4 win over Shawn Perry, giving Penn State a 20-0 lead at intermission. All-American David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio), ranked No. 1 at 165, opened up the second half with a quick pin of Wisconsin's Alex Yde. Taylor got the fall at the 2:28 mark in the first period. Fellow All-American Ed Ruth (Harrisburg, Pa.), ranked No. 2 at 174, followed that pin up with a 17-2 technical fall over Scott Liegel, getting the TF at 5:37. Defending National Champion Quentin Wright (Wingate, Pa.), ranked No. 2 at 184, then pinned UW's Timmy McCall, getting the fall at the 6:05 mark. True freshman Morgan McIntosh (Santa Ana, Calif.), ranked No. 12 at 197, was then dominant in a 7-3 decision over UW's Jackson Hein. Senior Cameron Wade (Twinsburg, Ohio), ranked No. 6 at heavyweight, closed out the dual and secured the shut out with a 6-4 win over Cole Tobin, giving the Nittany Lions the 43-0 victory. The Nittany Lions move to 7-1 on the year, 3-1 in the Big Ten. Wisconsin is now 5-5, 0-3 in the league. Penn State dominated the dual from start to finish, amassing a 31-2 takedown advantage and picking up 13 bonus points off three pins, one technical fall and two majors. The shut out of Wisconsin was the first for the Badgers since Iowa turned the trick 30-0 in 1958. It was Penn State's second shutout of the year and marks the first time Penn State notched a shutout in a Big Ten dual. Penn State's next home dual is on Sunday, Jan. 22, when Iowa invades Rec Hall for a 2 p.m. dual that is already sold out. The Nittany Lions then host Ohio State on Sunday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. Fans can purchase a limited number of `standing room only' tickets for the Ohio State dual by calling 814-865-5555. Megaludis set the tempo of the bout from the start, forcing Hietpas into defense for the bulk of the opening period. The Nittany Lion freshman took a 2-1 lead with a takedown at the 1:40 mark and then used another quick low single to a scramble and takedown to lead 4-2 with :45 on the clock. Megaludis added two more takedowns before a rideout allowed him to lead 8-3 after one period. Megaludis chose neutral to start the second period and quickly took Hietpas down. Megaludis would pile on the takedowns and lead 19-7 with nearly 2:00 riding time after two. Hietpas chose down to start the third and Megaludis worked his way to a pin at the 6:05 mark. 133: Sophomore Frank Martellotti (Pittsburgh, Pa.) met Badger junior Shane McQuade at 133. Martellotti got the bout's first takedown with a strong body lock for a 2-0 lead just :16 into action. The Lion sophomore then put together a strong ride before cutting the Badger junior loose at the 1:45 mark. McQuade caught Martellotti with a takedown and two near fall points, almost pinning the Lion sophomore. But Martellotti rolled through, quickly reversed him and then tacked on two near fall points of his own to lead 6-5 after one period. Martellotti chose down to start the second period and quickly worked his way into a position to notch a reversal. After a brief scramble, Martellotti got the two points and lead 8-5. Martellotti then maintained control of McQuade for the rest of the period, picking up a stall point during a ride out. McQuade chose neutral to start the third period turning a swift single into a takedown and an 11-5 lead at the 1:28 mark. The Lion then cut the Badger loose, looking for one more takedown to notch a major. Martellotti snared McQuade's foot on the edge of the mat, pulled him back into the circle and got the takedown at the :20 mark to take a 13-6 lead with a clinched riding time point. Needing a ride out without stalling to get the major, Martellotti was strong over the final :20 and posted the 14-6 major. 141: Penn State junior Bryan Pearsall (Lititz, Pa.) battled UW's Tommy Glenn at 141. Pearsall took a quick 2-0 lead with a takedown at the 2:43 mark. He then put together a dominating ride, building up a minute-plus in riding time while looking for a chance to turn Glenn. Pearsall got called for locked hands and led 2-1 at the 1:30 mark. He turned Glenn quickly at the reset but the Badger was able to roll through and stave off any back points. Pearsall led 2-1 after one period but had two cautions and a stall warning, while totaling 2:46 in riding time. Glenn chose neutral to start the second stanza and the duo battled evenly through the period with neither man scoring. Pearsall chose down to start the third and escaped to a 3-1 lead. With the riding time point clinched, Pearsall fought off a brief Glenn flurry and walked away with a 4-2 win. 149: In a marquee match-up at 149, top-ranked All-American Lion Frank Molinaro (Barnegat, N.J.) met No. 9 Cole Schmitt of Wisconsin. Molinaro notched the first takedown at the 1:48 mark, taking Schmitt down in front of the Penn State bench. The Lion senior then built up a solid riding time edge with a ride out and led 2-0 after one. Molinaro chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 3-0 lead. Molinaro turned a single leg into a scoring opportunity at the edge of the mat but Schmitt was able to move the action out of bounds and the Lion led 3-0 after two periods with 1:45 riding time. Schmitt chose down to start the third and Molinaro quickly turned the Badger to his back for two near fall points and a 5-0 lead. Another three point near fall and the Lion was quickly up 8-0 with :45 on the clock. Molinaro added another three point near fall and, with the riding time point, posted the convincing 12-0 major. 157: Nittany Lion Dylan Alton (Mill Hall, Pa.), ranked No. 9 at 157, faced off against Shawn Perry. Alton wasted no time taking Perry down and led 2-1 at the 2:44 mark. The Lion freshman continued to set the pace, taking low singles and forcing Perry back on his heels. Alton's offensive pressure led to a second takedown at the 1:32 mark. Alton caught Perry on a reset, nearly pinning the Badger before he could roll out of trouble. Perry escaped at the :55 mark and Alton led 7-2. Leading by five, Alton chose down to start the second period and escaped to an 8-2 lead in seconds. The Lion freshman carried that six point lead into the third period where Perry chose down to begin the final stanza. Perry escaped to an 8-3 deficit and action resumed in the center circle with 1:45 on the clock. Alton dove through a low double for another takedown to lead 10-4 after cutting Perry loose at the :20 mark. Needing one more takedown, Alton scrambled for the final score but the clock ran out, giving the Nittany Lion an 11-4 decision. 165: All-American David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio), ranked No. 1 at 165, met Wisconsin's Alex Yde. Yde was making his Wisconsin dual meet debut and Taylor quickly scored on a series of takedowns and cuts, taking an early 6-3 lead a minute into the bout. Taylor added a fourth takedown and turned Yde to his back for three back points and an 11-4 lead. One more takedown later and Taylor was able to plant Yde to his back for a quick first period pin at the 2:28 mark. 174: All-American Ed Ruth (Harrisburg, Pa.), ranked No. 2 at 174, battled Badger Scott Liegel. Ruth started with a similar flurry, taking Liegel down twice in thirty seconds to lead 4-2 early on. Liegel was able to hold off Ruth for a bit, but the Lion added a third takedown with 1:27 on the clock to lead 6-2. Ruth continued to control Liegel for the rest of the period and led 6-2 with 1:40 in riding time after the opening period. Ruth chose down and quickly escaped to a 7-2 lead. Ruth then picked up a stall point and added another takedown to lead 10-2 at the 1:25 mark. Ruth turned Liegel to his back for two near fall points to up the margin to 12-2. Another two point turn gave Ruth a 14-2 lead heading into the third period. Liegel chose down to start the third period and Ruth first clinched the riding time point and then turned McCall to his back for three near fall points and the technical fall. The 17-2 TF came at the 5:37 mark. 184: All-American Quentin Wright (Wingate, Pa.), ranked No. 2 at 184, met UW's Timmy McCall. Wright quickly threw McCall to his back, getting a fast takedown and nearly pinning him out of the gates. But McCall was able to roll out of trouble without giving up any back points and the Lion led 2-0. Wright put together a strong ride, looking for a chance to turn the Badger to his back. McCall was able to hold off Wright's efforts but the Nittany Lion's ride out gave him a 2-0 lead with 2:30 in riding time after one period. Wright chose down to start the second stanza and quickly rolled his way to a reversal and a 4-0 lead. He then maintained control of McCall for the remainder of the period and led 4-0 with 4:02 in riding time after two periods. McCall chose neutral to start the final period and Wright made him pay for the decision, catching him in a headlock and turning him to his back for a pin at the 6:05 mark. 197: Penn State's Morgan McIntosh (Santa Ana, Calif.), ranked No. 12 at 197, took on Jackson Hein of Wisconsin. McIntosh got in on an early low single, turning it into a scramble that led to a takedown and a 3-1 lead as McIntosh picked up a penalty point for a locked hands call on Hein before the Badger escaped. McIntosh looked to score more in the first period but Hein was able to keep the bout close, 3-1, after one. The Lion freshman chose down to start the second and quickly escaped to a 4-1 lead. McIntosh forced Hein into a stall warning and then used a low single to finish off a takedown to lead 6-2 after a Hein escape with just :15 left. McIntosh led 6-2 after two periods, Hein chose down to start the third and quickly escaped and the Lion led 6-3. McIntosh continued to pressure Hein back, forcing the Badger towards the outside circle continuously. McIntosh used another single leg to nearly take Hein down again but did pick up a point off another Hein technical violation. The Lion freshman rolled to a 7-3 decision. 285: Veteran heavyweight Cameron Wade (Twinsburg, Ohio), ranked No. 6, met UW sophomore Cole Tobin. Wade set the tempo early, controlling the action high while looking for an opening to score with a single leg. Wade's pressure paid off as the Lion senior gained control of Tobin's leg, slid down for a low double for the takedown and a 2-0 lead at the :40 mark. A short rideout gave the Lion a 2-0 lead heading into the second period. Tobin chose neutral to start the second stanza and tied the bout with a takedown :30 into the middle period. Wade worked his way to an escaped and a 3-2 lead at the :25 mark. He then chose down to start the third period and quickly reversed the Badger for a 5-2 lead with 1:32 on the clock. Wade then maintained control until the :20 mark when Tobin reversed him to cut the lead to 6-4 after a Wade escape. Wade fought off a late Tobin shot and escaped with a 6-4 win.

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The 17th-ranked Virginia Tech wrestling team snapped its two-match losing streak Sunday, downing NC State 24-15 in ACC action inside Reynolds Coliseum. Both Cameron Hurd and John Dickson fought back for last-second wins and Nick Vetterlein picked up a ! big pin to spark the Tech victory. The action got started at 125 pounds and NC State's Coltin Fought picked up a takedown in the second period and one more in the third to down Tech's Ty Mitch 6-0. Devin Carter, ranked first in the country at 133 pounds, picked up five team points for the Hokies with his second technical fall of the weekend. After picking up six takedowns in the first period, Carter got three more and two three-point nearfall combinations to beat Ben Elliott 24-6. At 141 pounds, 18th-ranked Darrius Little used a pair of third-period takedowns to beat 11th-ranked Zach Neibert of Tech 6-2. Nick Brascetta returned to the mat for the Hokies at 149 pounds, his first action since injuring his ankle at Ohio State in November. He didn't look rusty as he controlled the pace from the beginning and picked up a 10-5 win over Thomas Gantt. Things took a turn for the worse at 157 pounds when Matt Stephens was pinned after being reversed by Colton Palmer. Palmer got the first takedown, but Stephens responded with one of his own to take the lead. But Palmer used a reversal and put Stephens right to his back, picking up the pin at the 1:39 mark to give NC State at 12-8 lead at the break. At 165 pounds, NCSU's Nigel Jones jumped out to a big lead on Tech's Cameron Hurd, looking like he was going to flirt with a major decision. Hurd trailed 8-3 after one period and 11-7 early in the third period, but Hurd used a pair of takedowns and two back points with under 10 seconds left to cap a furious comeback and win 13-12. At 174 pounds, State's Quinton Godley took a 3-0 lead early on and held on late for a 5-2 win over Chris Moon to stretch State's lead back to four points with three matches left. John Dickson battled back at 184 pounds to pick up three big points for the Hokies. Trailing in the third period, Dickson got a takedown on Robert O'Neill, but O'Neill reversed him with under 25 seconds left. Dickson didn't give up and got the escape late to force sudden victory, where he got a takedown after a mad scramble to win 9-7. Nick Vetterlein gave Tech the lead for good with a huge first-period pin of KaRonne Jones. Trailing 2-1, Vetterlein took Jones down right to his back and picked up the pin with five seconds left in the period to put the Hokies ahead 20-15. It was Vetterlein's ninth pin of the season, the most on the team. Chris Penny left no doubt about the team result as he dominated Harrison Honeycutt with a 9-1 major decision at heavyweight. He used two takedowns, a reversal and over three minutes of riding time to roll to the win. Several other members of the squad are competing in the “Shorty†Hitchcock Memorial in Pennsylvania. Results from that will be posted when they become available. The team will be back in action next weekend, hosting a pair of ACC matches. The Hokies will take on Duke Saturday at 7 p.m. and then North Carolina Sunday at 2 p.m. Both matches will be in Cassell Coliseum and are free to attends. HAMPTON, Va. -- Kent State avenged an earlier season loss against No. 9 Missouri to complete a 4-0 weekend and win the Virginia Duals championship Saturday inside the Hampton Coliseum. In need of final match victories from senior Brendan Barlow (Westerville, Ohio) in both the semifinal and final round, the Golden Flashes topped Old Dominion 21-16 and Missouri 18-14. The Flashes' title is their first in 11 program trips to the event. "Every dual we had a different guy step up and get it done this weekend," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "The way we lost to Missouri (34-12) the last time, really made this a good day. We had four different guys that lost to them the first time and won today." Barlow was among the four that lost the first time around. In his second period Saturday night, Barlow pancaked Devin Mellon to mat for the difference-making takedown in his 3-2 victory. "Their guy took a bad shot at the edge and Brendan did a real good job of taking advantage of it," Andrassy said. Also getting revenge in the form of an upset was sophomore Brandonn Johnson (Middletown, Md.), who downed No. 10 Patrick Wright 4-1. Johnson trailed 1-0 after two periods, before converting a switch for a reversal and a two-point tilt. Also playing the role of underdog was junior Stevie Mitcheff (Lorain, Ohio). Mitcheff was 0-7 in dual meets heading into Saturday, but it didn't stop him from going 2-0 on the day with a 4-3 victory over Missouri's Eric Wilson. The other Kent State grappler to overcome an earlier loss against Missouri was freshman Ian Miller (Graytown, Ohio), who went 4-0 on the weekend. Miller defeated No. 12 Kyle Bradley (Missouri) 7-3 and earned his second major decision of the weekend, with a 14-4 win over Brennan Brumley (ODU). Junior Casey Newburg (Union, Ohio) and sophomore Tyler Small (Littlestown, Pa.) also had perfect 4-0 weekends. Newburg halted Old Dominion's 13-point rally with his second major decision of the weekend, an 11-3 victory over Billy Curling. Newburg then scored a comfortable 6-1 triumph over Missouri's Dorian Henderson. Small blanked No. 19 Nick Hucke (Missouri) 5-0. "Tyler just keeps on plugging away," Andrassy said. "A year ago, who would have thought he'd be where he is right now. He's really consistent and really hard to wrestle." The Flashes won 6-of-10 matches against both Old Dominion and Missouri and were not far from taking eight matches from the Tigers. Senior Ross Tice (Brookfield, Ohio) surrendered a takedown with 10 seconds left to drop a 5-4 decision against Zach Toal and senior Nic Bedelyon (Lewistown, Pa.) fell to No. 3 Alan Waters 7-5 in overtime. "I felt like Nic really outwrestled him and just let it get away in overtime," Andrassy said. "I feel like he's the better wrestler, he just needs to put together a whole match against him." Kent State led Old Dominion 13-0, but the tide turned when John Nicholson (157) got the Monarchs on the board with a 3-1 victory over junior Mallie Shuster (Newville, Pa.). With his team up by just one point heading into the final match, Barlow also sealed the first team victory of the day with a 9-1 major decision over Matt Tourdot. Barlow drove Tourdot directly to his back on a double leg shot and jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening period. BRODHEADSVILLE, Pa. -- Number one versus number two. Blair Academy, N.J. against St. Edward, Ohio. Fans wanted electricity and excitement. They got that to say the least, and then some. Though kind of bland, boring, and according to script for ten matches -- the twists and turns of the last four matches more than made up for it. The dual meet started at 138 pounds, which meant four consecutive matches where both teams had wrestlers ranging from pretty darn good to elite on the mat. As predicted in preview analysis, Blair Academy won the opening three matches. No. 4 Todd Preston beat Nick Barber 4-2 at 138 pounds, No. 9 Dylan Milonas beat Markus Scheidel, 12-6, at 145, while Russ Parsons upended Matt Van Curen, 7-1, at 152. Facing a 9-0 deficit, senior Jacob Davis put the Eagles on the board with a 2-1 victory at 160 over Patrick Coover. No. 5 Mark Martin majored Addison Knepshield 14-3 to cut the deficit to 9-7 after 170, and Domenic Abounader gave the Eagles their first lead of the match with a 10-3 decision over Michael Mocco at 182 -- the score was 10-9, advantage St. Edward. The Buccaneers responded as No. 15 Frank Mattiace came through with a second consecutive victory over James Suvak in the Blair Academy vs. St Edward dual meet, this time a 3-0 decision at 195 pounds. Then, No. 14 Ty Walz countered for St. Edward with a 10-8 overtime result over David Farr. The Eagles led 13-12, which would be their last time on top for the evening. With No. 4 Greg Kuhar out of the lineup for St. Edward, No. 1 Brooks Black pinned Joe Belford, to give Blair Academy an 18-13 lead that they would hold for the rest of the dual meet. The end of the script was at 106 pounds, where Jordan Kutler gave Blair a 21-13 lead after upending L.J. Bentley, 4-2, in what was thought to be a key swing match. Then, the dynamic changed at 113, with No. 3 Joey McKenna unable to make weight for Blair, as he weighed in for the 120 class. Senior Alex Moore came through for a pin for St. Edward against freshman Chaz Tucker to cut the deficit to 21-19. McKenna wrestled for the Buccaneers at 120, and came up with a big 7-1 win over Colin Heffernan to make the score 24-19 Blair with two matches to go, where it was superstar on superstar. At 126 pounds, No. 2 Dean Heil came through for St. Edward with a 4-1 victory over No. 15 Max Hvolbek to set up a winner take all last match of the dual meet with potentially the national title on the line. At 132 pounds, it would be the senior anchor of Blair Academy's team this year, No. 2 Mark Grey, going up against junior Edgar Bright, ranked No. 8 in the nation. The first period would end up scoreless in spite of the fact Bright was in very deep on an attempted cradle, was awarded the takedown, but it was then waived off. The official's decision being that takedown criteria was not met with time remaining on the clock, which would be one of many bones of contention in the post-mortem of this dual meet. Grey chose down in the second period, got an escape to lead 1-0 headed into the third period. After Grey takes an injury timeout between periods, Bright chose the down position, and got an escape with about one minute remaining. The last minute of regulation and one minute of sudden victory would go scoreless, though Bright was controlling the pace and ties, and would have one takedown scoring opportunity negated due to the fact he was called out of bounds. The match then goes to the :30-:30 tiebreaker situation. Bright chose down in the first tiebreaker. He stands up off the whistle, and gets into a scramble, where Grey neutralizes the situation and may have gotten it to near fall exposure, but the official stopped due to a potential injury for Bright. In the ending sequence of the first tiebreaker, the St. Edward coaching staff contests that there was a locking hands on Grey, but it's a moot point as it really wasn't there to be called. Grey chooses down in the second portion of the tiebreaker, and promptly escapes. Then for the last twenty-plus seconds Bright is chasing after the go-ahead takedown, Grey does get hit for stalling once, but he fends it off and seals the deal for Blair. The Buccaneers win 27-22 and give themselves a significant advantage for the No. 1 position throughout the rest of the year.

Kolodzik notched a takedown off a front headlock, and with two quick back points, took a 4-0 lead after the first period. Eifert chose to start the second at neutral, but Kolodzik took him down to hold a 6-0 advantage. Kolodzik escaped to open the third period. Eifert would take him down and earn a point for Kolodzik's second stalling call. With riding time, Kolodzik won an 8-3 decision. Schreiner squared off against Rich Eva at 165 pounds. The Big Red wrestler notched a takedown and added three back points as time ran out in the first period to hold a 5-0 lead. Eva chose to start the second at neutral, but neither wrestler scored. Schreiner escaped from his opening down position in the third. Eva grabbed two takedowns in the third, but Schreiner held on to win 7-4. At 174 pounds, Peppelman faced Andy Lowy. Peppelman held a 2-1 lead after the first with a takedown from which Lowy escaped. Peppelman reversed Lowy from his opening down position in the second period. Lowy would escape, but Peppelman had to call injury time allowing Lowy his choice at the restart. Lowy chose down and reversed Peppelman to tie the bout at 4-4. Peppelman nearly had another reversal, but settled for a one point escape at time ran out in the period. Lowy reversed Peppelman to start the third period and added two back points for an 8-5 advantage. Peppelman would be hit with two stalling calls before the period was up. PITTSBURGH -- The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team registered the 500th win in program history with a 27-9 victory over visiting Lock Haven on Friday night at the Fitzgerald Field House. The win also extended the Panthers win streak in the Eastern Wrestling League to 14 matches. They currently sit all alone in first place in the conference with a 2-0 mark this season. Pitt head coach Rande Stottlemyer is in his 33rd season leading the Panthers and has accumulated 290 of the team's 500 wins. “It's great for the program,†Stottlemyer said. “The University of Pittsburgh has had wrestling for a long time and there wasn't a better coach than Rex Peery and what he did with the program back in the 50s. It's a rich tradition and I'm just proud to be part of it.†Stottlemyer, of course, helped the program pick up some of those wins during his wrestling days, as well. He was a three-time All-American in the late 1970s. Assistant coach Matt Kocher did his part as a wrestler, too, earning All-American status once and tallying 151 career wins on the mat. The 500th win came in relatively easy fashion for the Panthers as they rolled to their ninth victory of the season. The team's 9-1-0 start is the program's best through 10 matches since the 1975-76 team went 9-1-0 on its way to a 12-4 overall record. With the opposing coaches choosing to draw the starting weight, Matt Wilps had the opportunity to get Pitt off to a good start at 197 pounds. Wilps, ranked No. 5, cruised to a 18-2 technical fall, keeping his unblemished dual record intact at 10-0. He also has the longest current win streak on the team at 12 matches. Two bouts later Anthony Zanetta matched Wilps's 10-0 dual record but it wasn't nearly as easy. The Pitt junior, ranked No. 16, jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a takedown in the first period and upped his advantage to 3-0 with an escape in the second. But Rehm, a true freshman for the Bald Eagles, made him work for the win, cutting the lead to 3-2 with a takedown. Leading 4-2 in the third period, Zanetta gave up an escape but held on for the one-point win. Shelton Mack gave the Panthers an 11-3 lead with his decision at 133 pounds, exacting some revenge in the process. John Trumbetti eked out a 5-4 decision over the Panther last season, but this time around Mack tallied three takedowns in a 8-3 win. Lock Haven cut Pitt's lead to 11-9 with a fall at 141, but the Panthers finished off the match with five straight wins. No. 14 Tyler Nauman started the run with a victory in the only match of the night featuring two ranked wrestlers. The redshirt senior showed disparity between the top half of the rankings and the bottom half with an 11-1 major decision over No. 29 Owen Wilkinson at 149. Donnie Tasser (157), No. 31 Tyler Wilps (165), P.J. Tasser (174) and Andy Vaughan (184) all recorded decisions in their bouts for the Panthers. Both Tassers evened their records at .500 with their wins. Donnie Tasser improved to 8-8 with a 5-2 decision over Aaron Fry, while P.J. Tasser moved his record to 7-7 with a 2-1 decision over Aaron McKinney. P.J. Tasser, who was filling in for an injured Ethan Headlee, erased a scoreless match with an escape in the second period. McKinney escaped in the third period, but not before Tasser had racked up over a minute of riding time to secure the win. Andy Vaughan continued his recent surge, winning his ninth straight match with a 7-3 decision over Fred Garcia at 184. Vaughan scored in multiple ways, including a takedown, two nearfall points and a reversal. “The guys are doing a good job,†Stottlemyer said. “(Assistant coaches) Jason Peters and Matt Kocher are doing a tremendous job. We're looking to close it out on a high note heading into EWLs and NCAAs.†Pitt looks to stay unbeaten in the conference when it travels to Bloomsburg for a match on Sunday. That match is scheduled for 2 p.m. Results: 197 – No. 5 Matt Wilps (P) tech. fall Matt Parlier (L), 18-2 285 – Harry Turner (L) dec. Joel Yahner (P), 6-1 125 – No. 16 Anthony Zanetta (P) dec. AMES, Iowa -- Redshirt freshman Michael Moreno earned his second dual victory of the season in Iowa State's 20-14 victory over Virginia Tech Friday night in Hilton Coliseum. The No. 19 Cyclones (2-9, 0-4 Big 12) won six of 10 matches and three Iowa Staters earned bonus points in the upset of the No. 15 Hokies (3-3, 1-1 ACC). The Cyclone faithful were on their feet during many Cyclone matches, but the loudest cheer came after Moreno's 8-2 decision over Matt Stephens at 157 pounds. Previously Moreno had struggled with just a 1-7 record overall, but he feels the win can boost his confidence as Iowa State heads into two Big 12 bouts. "It's definitely a confidence builder," Moreno said. "And winning is contagious so hopefully it sets off a whole string of them." Moreno posted a reversal with 30 seconds remaining in the first period to tie it up at 2-2 and from there controlled the match and racked up 1:12 riding time. Relief spread across Moreno's face as those in cardinal and gold gave him a standing ovation. Redshirt freshman Luke Goettl also received a standing ovation after an upset victory over No. 11 Zach Neibert. With 40 secs left in the first period, Goettl posted a reversal after Neibert had a cradle nearly set. Goettl continued his momentum into the second period with an early escape after a missed ankle pick by Neibert. The Clarkdale, Ariz., native's win extended the Cyclone lead to 6-5 after three matches. "It's nice to get the win over a ranked kid," Goettl said. "It was also a revenge match and I hate to lose." Cyclone captain Andrew Sorenson dominated his match against No. 7 Pete Yates with a 17-4 major decision. Fifth-ranked Sorenson posted four takedowns and racked up five near fall points in the top-10 matchup. At 125 pounds, Ryak Finch edged past Ty Mitch 2-0 to give Iowa State an early meet lead. With a two point lead the Cyclones depended on Matt Gibson to finish the dual out at heavyweight. Gibson ended the night with an exclamation point by posting a 11-1 major decision over Chris Penny. EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Behind the momentum of four straight victories that helped build a 17-0 lead to open the match, the West Virginia University wrestling team defeated Michigan State, 23-12. With the victory, the Mountaineers now move to 3-2 overall on the season and the Spartans fall to 2-4. Brutus Scheffel “It was significant and impactful for us to build that 17-0 lead in the beginning,†said coach Craig Turnbull. “Starting the match with some pace and getting wins under our belt was critical.†Junior Shane Young (125) got WVU off to a quick start as he scored three takedowns in the first period of his matchup against Brenan Lyon. The takedowns helped build an 8-2 lead. Young was called for a penalty point in the third period, but rebounded with yet another takedown, which made the score 10-3. Young had a total of 1:25 of riding time, which gave him an 11-3 major decision. Redshirt sophomore Nathan Pennesi (133) followed Young's major decision with a major decision of his own. The Latrobe, Pa., native successfully converted a takedown attempt in the final 30 seconds of his match that gave him the 8-0 victory. “Nathan was so much more comfortable this week at 133 pounds, and that looked a lot more like the Nathan we are use to seeing,†Turnbull said. “It was a great effort by Nathan and Shane to get the bonus points that made a difference in the team score.†Sophomore Michael Morales, who was wrestling his second match of the season for the Mountaineers, pinned Brian Gibbs 3:20 into their 141-pound matchup. After starting from bottom position, Morales scrambled and was able to score a reversal from which he pinned Gibbs. Redshirt freshman Brutus Scheffel (149) continued the WVU momentum swing, as he upset No. 23 Dan Osterman in a 9-6 decision. Scheffel fell behind early in the match, 4-1, but was able to rally in the second period. Scheffel converted three takedowns in the second period that gave him an 8-6 advantage. An escape point in the third period proved to be enough for the victory. “It felt great to get avenge the loss I had against Osterman at the Reno Tournament of Champions,†said Scheffel. “Most of the points he had in the first period were from my mistakes, so I just tried to stay after him. We had momentum heading into my match, but we had it even more after I was able to win.†After three straight decision victories by Michigan State, WVU's lead was cut to 17-9. Redshirt senior Matt Ryan (184) helped pushed the Spartans near the edge though, when he defeated John Rizqallah by a narrow 3-2 to margin. Ryan and Rizqallah finished regulation time tied at 2-2, but Ryan earned the riding time point with a total of 2:36 on top. Redshirt senior Brandon Williamson (HWT) closed out the victory for the Mountaineers, as he defeated Steve Andrus in a close 6-4 decision. Williamson converted a takedown with under 15 seconds remaining in the third period that sealed the victory. WVU will return to action this Saturday and Sunday, when they host dual meets against Bloomsburg and Clarion. CEDAR FALLS, IOWA -- The Northern Iowa wrestling team (4-3, 2-0) defeated Big Ten opponent Wisconsin (5-4, 0-2) Friday, 25-15. The win broke a nine-dual winless streak against the Badgers that has spanned the past nine seasons. The Panthers dug Wisconsin into a hole early, and the Badgers never recovered. Senior Cruse Aarhus (125) made a statement in the night's opening match, topping UW's Austin Hietpas with a 17-2 technical fall. The West Gym has been good to Aarhus, who has compiled two tech. falls and a major decision in the Panthers' three home duals this season. Joe Colon (133) gave UNI five more early points, as he also defeated his opponent, Shane McQuade, with a 17-2 tech. fall. The redshirt sophomore is undefeated in dual action this season at 3-0. UNI racked up even more bonus points in the night's third match, as redshirt freshman Levi Wolfensperger (141) defeated Thomas Glenn with a 9-0 major decision. After Wolfensperger's victory, the Panthers found themselves up 14-0. From that point, it was tough for Wisconsin to recover, as the Panthers even held the three out of the four matches that they lost to regular decisions. Meanwhile, David Bonin (157) and Ryan Loder (184) both compiled major decisions, and Blayne Beale (285) won by decision. Bonin used a takedown with eight seconds left in the third period, in addition to a riding time point, to turn his win over Shawn Perry into a major decision. The junior Louisiana-native is 3-0 in home duals this season. Bonin also leads the Panthers in career wins with 61. Loder was one point away from a tech. fall, but he had to settle for a 16-2 major decision over UW's Timmy McCall. The sophomore continued his dual-match perfection, as he boasts a 7-0 dual record and 23-1 overall record. Beale put an exclamation mark on UNI's first win over a Big Ten opponent since 2010, topping the Badgers' Cole Tobin with a 5-2 decision. A crucial takedown with 1:08 left in the third brought the 1,000-plus West Gym crowd to its feet. LINCOLN, Neb. -- The University of Iowa wrestling team won seven-of-10 bouts to top seventh-ranked Nebraska, 24-9, tonight inside NU Coliseum. The win was the 900th dual victory in school history and marked Iowa's 38th consecutive conference win. The loss was Nebraska's first of the year. "We did some good things," said head coach Tom Brands. "You can start with the victory over a capable and confident opponent. We grabbed control of the dual, which is always important, but we need to grab control of every match and not give the opponent any opportunities." Junior Grant Gambrall led off the dual with a 3-1 overtime victory over James Nakashima at 197 pounds. Both wrestlers traded escapes in the second and third frames before Gambrall finished a takedown 17 seconds into the sudden victory period. Nebraska (10-1, 1-1) tied the team score, 3-3, when ninth-ranked Tucker Lane scored a third period takedown over No. 8 Bobby Telford to earn a 4-1 victory. Senior Montell Marion increased the Hawkeye lead to 15-3 with a 9-6 win over No. 6 Jake Sueflohn. Redshirt freshman Michael Kelly captured the Hawkeyes' fifth straight match with a 7-3 decision over Brandon Wilbourn at 149 pounds. Kelly recorded back-to-back escapes between the first and second period to tie the bout, 2-2, before earning a takedown and consecutive stall calls to build a 6-2 lead. He then surrendered an escape, but added a point for riding time (1:30) to earn his first career dual victory. Nebraska stopped the Hawkeye rally when 10th-ranked James Green scored a 12-7 win over redshirt freshman Nick Moore. Moore scored a pair of takedowns in the third period to pull within two points, 8-6, but Green withstood the rally and earned the win to trim the Iowa lead to 18-6. Redshirt freshman Mike Evans swung the momentum back toward the Hawkeyes when he scored a 7-3 upset over third-ranked Robert Kokesh. The ninth-ranked Evans scored an early takedown and a late first period reversal to build a 4-2 lead after one frame. He then added a second period takedown and a third period escape to improve to 3-0 in Big Ten duals and extend Iowa's lead, 21-6. Sophomore Ethen Lofthouse then added to the team lead when he notched an 8-1 decision over Tyler Koehn at 174 pounds. Lofthouse didn't allow an offensive point and collected 2:36 of riding time behind three takedowns. Nebraska won the final bout of the dual when seventh-ranked Josh Ihnen topped senior Vinnie Wagner 10-5, making the final team score, 24-9. ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team won the first seven bouts and the finale while earning bonus points in half of the matches en route to a dominant 33-6 victory over Indiana on Friday evening (Jan. 13) in front of 605 fans at Cliff Keen Arena. Among the eight victories, the Wolverines posted a pin, two technical falls and two major decisions to improve to 3-1 in Big Ten Conference action. Michigan carried a 22-0 advantage into the intermission break after earning bonus wins at four of the opening five weights. The lone Wolverine without an early bonus victory, junior/sophomore Grant Pizzo (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS), was just a point shy, securing an 8-1 decision over Zach Zimmer at 125 pounds. Pizzo converted on three takedowns -- one in each period -- and accumulated 3:05 in riding-time advantage. Senior Zac Stevens (Monroe, Mich./Monroe HS), ranked 17th in the latest InterMat poll, posted his third fall of the season against Joe Duca in the 133-pound match, finishing on a quick front headlock before using a high-leg turk for a five count and then the pin at 1:42. Fifth-year senior Kellen Russell (High Bridge, N.J./Blair Academy) also ended his match early, cruising past Ryen Niemen, 16-1, on three takedowns and nine back points. Russell, ranked second at 141 pounds, converted two takedowns in the first period before using an arm bar and a half nelson to add a pair of three-point near falls in the final 45 seconds of the frame. He escaped immediately in the second, finished on a single leg and, with a high-leg turk, turned Niemen for another three points to end the bout at 3:59. Russell improved to 19-1 on the season. Junior/sophomore Eric Grajales (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) earned his second straight bonus win over Indiana's Taylor Walsh, who had previously dealt the Wolverine wrestler a season-opening loss, with a 12-4 major decision at 149 pounds. It was Walsh who struck first, converting on a first-period inside trip, but Grajales scrambled for a reversal late in the frame and put Walsh on his back for an additional three points at the buzzer. Grajales, ranked 11th, countered a shot for a quick takedown in the second before adding another reversal and another takedown -- off a headlock on the edge -- to close out the third period. Junior/sophomore Brandon Zeerip (Fremont, Mich./Hesperia HS) rallied from a five-point deficit to claim a 25-12 major decision over Ryan Konz in the 157-pound match. Konz won an early scramble to earn his advantage, using a scissors around the head to get a takedown and three-point near fall. However, Zeerip responded with a pair of takedowns and three-point cradle to steal away a two-point lead after the opening frame. The Wolverine wrestler added six more takedowns in the remaining two periods and accumulated 2:26 in time advantage. Fifth-year senior Dave Johnson (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) kept Michigan's bonus streak going after the intermission with an 18-2 technical fall over Preston Keiffer at 165 pounds. Johnson rallied after giving up the initial takedown, putting Keiffer on his back with a single leg of his own and earning five back points out of a crab ride. The Wolverine escaped quickly in the second, finished on a spin around and used consecutive three-point tilts to end the match at 4:20. After sitting out the Wolverines' last dual with injury, fifth-year senior Justin Zeerip (Fremont, Mich./Hesperia HS) was victorious in his return at 174 pounds, using a first-period snap down and spin around to cruise to a 4-1 decision over Ryan LeBlanc. Zeerip, ranked fifth, added a second-period escape and 1:32 in riding time to improve to 16-1 on the season. The Hoosiers won back-to-back matches at 184 and 197 pounds to put themselves on the board. Fourth-ranked Matt Powless rallied to narrowly claim the latter match, 5-3, over sophomore/freshman Max Huntley (Emerald Isle, N.C./Blair Academy). Huntley, ranked 15th, converted on a single leg in the opening 15 seconds and nearly finished another late in the first period, but Powless took control with a single of his own late in the second and rode the Wolverine for most of the third to earn an advantage point. Senior/junior Ben Apland (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) capped the Wolverines' performance with a 6-2 decision over Adam Chalfant in the heavyweight bout, using a first-period bodylock and third-period single leg to cruise to his fourth straight Big Ten win. Michigan (4-2, 3-1 Big Ten) will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 22, hosting intrastate rival Central Michigan for a 2 p.m. dual at Cliff Keen Arena.
