Fight Breakdown: Weidman vs. Maia at UFC on FOX 2
InterMat Staff posted an article in Mixed Martial Arts
BJJ phenom Demian Maia was expected to face No. 8-ranked middleweight Michael Bisping on January 28 at UFC on FOX 2. But when Mark Munoz pulled out of his bout against Chael Sonnen with an injury, Bisping was pulled to face Sonnen, leaving Maia to square off against standout wrestler Chris Weidman, ranked No. 14 in the division. Weidman, who trains with UFC veteran Matt Serra and striking coach Ray Longo, is an undefeated prospect who has been steadily climbing his way up the ladder. The former two-time All-American Division I wrestler found his way in the UFC in 2011 and went 3-0 for the year. He decisioned seasoned veteran Alessio Sakara (who was 15-7-0-1 at the time), handed Jesse Bongfledt his fifth loss via guillotine with just seconds left in the first round, and then turned heads by putting Tom Lawlor to sleep with a first round Brabo choke at UFC 139 in November. In his college wrestling career, Weidman defeated both Phil Davis and Ryan Bader. He served as an assistant wrestling coach at Hofstra University. Weidman had considered training for the 2008 Olympics, but suffered a rib injury. He opted to try MMA rather than wait for the 2012 Olympics Although Demien Maia has the far more impressive submission grappling pedigree, Weidman is no stranger to BJJ. In fact, he won the East Coast Grappler's Quest in his own weight class, as well as winning the Absolute division. Weidman won all 13 of his matches by submission. Weidman also competed in the 2009 ADCC World Championships in Barcelona, Spain. He defeated Daniel Tabera, but lost to seven-time World champion Andre Galvao by points in the quarterfinals. Both of these tournaments took place when Weidman had under a year of formal training. Maia's long been winning BJJ tournaments. A BJJ black belt under Fabio Gurgel, Maia now competes under the Brasa banner. He is a three-time Brazilian World Cup champion and a two-time ADCC champion. Maia, of course, is also the far more experienced fighter as well. Although he suffered a brutal decision loss to Anderson Silva in April 2010, he has since gone on to defeat Mario Miranda, Kendall Grove, and, most recently, Jorge Santiago. He won a decision against a very tough Dan Miller and won Submission of the Night honors a total of four times -- landing a triangle choke on both Ed Herman and Chael Sonnen, and rear naked chokes against Ryan Jensen and Jason MacDonald. If there's anything we learned from Demian Maia's fight against Mark Munoz -- controversial decision notwithstanding -- it's that Maia's shots can be stuffed and dangerous submissions can be neutralized by a smart wrestler. That's why this last-minute change in opponents creates a tougher challenge for Maia, and why oddsmakers are calling Weidman an early favorite. And although Maia was already in fight camp, so it's not like he took the bout at the last minute, he was preparing to face striker Michael Bisping. On the other hand, Maia had no trouble contending with wrestler Chael Sonnen back in 2009 -- despite Sonnen's wrestling background. (Sonnen was a Division All-American at the University of Oregon, a silver medalist at the Greco-Roman World University Championships in 2000, and a two-time Dave Schultz Memorial International Greco-Roman winner.) Maia capitalized on a lateral drop before finishing with a triangle, which appears to be Sonnen's Kryptonite. It's also worth noting that Sonnen didn't want much to do with Maia's ground game, twice standing up out of full guard. It's tough to say since we haven't seen much of Weidman's standup, but Maia may very well have an edge in the stand-up game -- so Weidman may not be so quick to stand, instead utilizing his developing submission game and superior wrestling. But this isn't to say that Weidman doesn't have his work cut out for him. Although he is undefeated, he has never faced anyone of Maia's caliber. Even Rousimar Paulhares, the kind of the leg lock, turned down the chance to face Maia on short notice. But Weidman has far less to lose and far more to gain in the bout. Simply putting on a good show against such a high-level opponent will improve the wrestler's stock. Maia, on the other hand, is not in as good of a position. Defeating Bisping would have put him back on the road towards title contention. Defeating Weidman on short notice may be more challenging, but won't look nearly as impressive. And a loss to a lesser-known fighter who hasn't yet been in the deep end of the pool would be a step back for Maia, who will need to secure more wins to work his way back up again. Who will win the classic battle of the grappler versus wrestler, seasoned veteran versus hungry up-and-coming star, footnoted by a last-minute opponent shuffle? Tune in Saturday night to find out. -

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The 13th-ranked Maryland wrestling team won six of the first seven matches en route to its second Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the season as the Terps (12-0, 2-0 ACC) defeated NC State, 27-12, Sunday afternoon at Comcast Pavilion. Second-ranked junior Josh Asper earned his fifth pin of the season and improved to 19-0, but it was 20th-ranked Shane Gentry and Geoffrey Alexander's early performances that propelled Maryland to its 12th dual victory. Following an 8-4 decision for Gentry at 125 to open the meet, Alexander took command of his matchup against Ben Elliott within the first two minutes of the first period. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native recorded three takedowns halfway through the period and added a 3-point near-fall and a 2-point near-fall to close the frame. Alexander won a 19-2 technical fall and increased the Maryland lead to 8-0. "The 125 pounder is the catalyst for everything," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "It was a huge win for Shane. Geoff fed off of that. I tell our guys to focus on wrestling well. I think Geoff did a good job with that. He had confidence and went out there looking to score points. He knew he had to go out there and give a good performance for himself and his team." At 165, Asper quickly executed against Nijel Jones. The Parkton, Md., native tallied a takedown and 3-point near-fall within 35 seconds of the opening period. Asper added another takedown before pinning Jones with 1:25 remaining in the first period. For the fifth straight dual meet, 12th-ranked Kyle John earned bonus points for the Terps. After pinning Navy's Bobby Barnhisel Friday night, John won a major decision over Colton Palmer without surrendering a point. "The guys wrestled well. It's the first time in a while we put forth the overall, solid team effort. Things we were talking about and things we are doing are starting to show and it's at the right time. We are peaking towards the end of the year. This is a solid win to show we are doing the right things," McCoy said. STILLWATER, Okla. -- The No. 1-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling program won its second dual of the weekend Sunday afternoon, picking up six bonus point wins in a 33-7 rout of Iowa State at Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Cowboys (8-0 overall; 3-0 Big 12) earned six bonus point wins for the second match in a row and tallied 28 total takedowns compared to the Cyclones' five. OSU also recorded 10 nearfalls while ISU (2-11; 0-6 Big 12) had none. “I just felt like we were relentless tonight,†coach John Smith said. “In a lot of areas, it seemed like we got some big moves early, and then we just kept the pressure on and kept looking for more. There's some things I've been preaching, and you don't always get what you preach, but tonight I did.†A pair of major decisions over ranked opponents highlighted the night for the Cowboys, including Josh Kindig's 11-3 win over No. 13 Luke Goettl at 141 pounds and Alan Gelogaev's 13-1 victory over No. 10 Matt Gibson at heavyweight. “Everybody has been working hard,†Kindig said. “We had those two weeks off to push ourselves to the max. By lifting and practicing for those two weeks it has really paid off for us.†Other bonus point winners for the Cowboys included Jordan Oliver at 133, Jamal Parks at 149, Chris McNeil at 184 and Blake Rosholt at 197 pounds. Oliver's 17-1 technical fall over Ben Cash was his second-straight technical fall and his 12th bonus-point win of the year. He recorded a pair of takedowns and four nearfalls in the opening period and added another takedown and nearfall in the second to the end the bout in 3:09 and move to 12-1. Parks earned an 11-3 major decision over Luke Swalla to improve his undefeated record to 18-0. It was his second-consecutive and team-best eighth major decision of the year. It also marked his 11th bonus-point win. Oklahoma State got another major decision from Chris McNeil, who recorded four takedowns in a 13-4 win over Tyler Christensen. The senior now holds an 11-5 record and four major decisions in 2011-12. Rosholt scored the only pin of the dual and his fifth fall of the year when he defeated Cole Shafer in 4:45. The sophomore recorded a pair of takedowns and nearfalls in the first period and ended it with 15 seconds remaining in the second. Other Cowboy winners included Albert White, who defeated Michael Moreno, 6-1, at 157 pounds and Chris Perry, who knocked off Mikey England, 8-1, at 174 pounds. It marked White's team-best 19th victory of the season and Perry's 14th win of his perfect 14-0 season to date. The Cowboys' team win was notable because it gave them sole possession of the lead for most all-time dual wins. OSU and ISU each entered tied for the lead with 1,013, but the Cowboys' victory puts them alone on top with 1,014. “I'm pleased to be a part of it,†Smith said. “It's kind of odd we beat Iowa State on that day. It's good to beat Iowa State on that day. It's a tradition; it's a history that it's a privilege to be a part of. I'm a small part of it. It means a little bit more with the passing of Coach (Myron) Roderick. I'm sure he's smiling because it establishes another record for our program.†Oklahoma State wrestling takes to the mat again on Friday, Jan. 27, against North Carolina State at 7 p.m. at Gallagher-Iba Arena, continuing with the third of a five-dual home stand that concludes with a double-header on Sunday, Jan. 29. NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma earned bonus points in seven of its eight victories on Sunday as the Sooners crushed Arizona State, 33-7, inside the McCasland Field House. “I think dual meets are very important as far as working on what we are trying to accomplish in March,†Mark Cody said. “The good thing is that we scored a lot of points, but we are stopping short of getting majors and technical falls. That is where we really need to challenge ourselves and commit to scoring. That is what I was a little bit disappointed about.†The 11th-ranked Sooners won the first six bouts and eight out of ten overall to improve against the Sun Devils (5-9) to improve to 10-2 on the year. Jarrod Patterson started the dual with a 19-8 major decision victory over ASU's David Prado. Patterson, ranked No. 7, had five takedowns, two nearfalls, two escapes and added 1:55 of riding time to give Oklahoma the 4-0 advantage. Keller, ranked No. 11, had a takedown in the first period and a quick reversal 0:16 into the second. ASU's Eric Starks gave the Sun Devils their first win of the day after he defeated OU's Nolan McBryde, 12-3. McBryde gave up five takedowns to Starks and his only points came on three escapes. With the Sooners holding a 26-4 advantage, OU's Erich Schmidtke gave up a 4-3 match to the Sun Devil's Kevin Radford in the 184 pound bout. After a scoreless first, Schmidtke had two escapes, but Radford countered with a takedown. Radford got the reversal and 4-2 advantage in the third after Schmidtke was trying for back points. Schmidtke earned the escape with 0:25 seconds left in the bout, but was unable to secure a takedown. Keldrick Hall gave OU a 30-7 lead after he earned a 10-2 major decision victory over ASU's Chace Eskam. Hall tallied four takedowns, an escape and 2:34 of riding time in the 197 pound bout. Oklahoma heavyweight Kyle Colling earned the biggest win of his career on Sunday as the Sooner upset Arizona State's No. 9-ranked Levi Cooper, 4-3. Colling held a 1-0 lead going into the third period and added a 2-point nearfall before Cooper could tally the escape. Cooper took down Colling to knot the score, 3-3, but Colling fought to escape with 0:28 remaining. “We are improving all the time,†Cody explained. “Kyle Colling just knocked off the guy that beat the No. 1-ranked guy in the country, which was a huge win. He was ready to go today. He went out there and fought today. We are really excited about his win and hopefully this will sink in and he will start to buy-in and believe that he is very capable of beating some very good wrestlers.†Next weekend, Cody will embark on his first "Beauty and the Beast" event, which pits the Sooners' wrestling team against Virginia Tech. The wrestlers will compete alongside the 10th-ranked Oklahoma women's gymnastics team, who is set to take on 18th-ranked North Carolina State, inside the Lloyd Noble Center at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27 Results: 125 - No. 8 Jarrod Patterson (OU) MD. ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With the dual still in the balance in the final match, senior/junior heavyweight Ben Apland (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) earned a second-period fall to seal the No. 10-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team's 23-12 win over No. 19 Central Michigan on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 22) in front of 756 fans at Cliff Keen Arena. The Chippewas twice knotted the score in the dual's second half, but U-M captured the last two matches to pull away. With Michigan carrying a narrow three-point lead in the final bout, Apland, ranked 14th in the latest InterMat poll, built an early advantage against CMU's 13th-ranked Peter Sturgeon, countering a single shot to score and subsequently ride out the opening frame. He took Sturgeon down again with a late second-period single leg and caught him in a shallow overhook, running it over to end the bout at the buzzer (5:00). Sophomore/freshman Max Huntley (Emerald Isle, N.C./Blair Academy) helped Michigan retake the lead in the preceding match, where he cruised to a 10-6 decision over Chad Friend at 197 pounds. Huntley, ranked 15th, scored four takedowns -- two apiece in the first and second periods -- and accumulated 2:37 in riding-time advantage. The Wolverines had held an early and sizable advantage after claiming three of the opening five bouts, rebounding from a major decision defeat at the starting weight to reel off three consecutive wins from its ranked lowerweights. Senior Zac Stevens (Monroe, Mich./Monroe HS), ranked 18th, put U-M on the board with a 4-2 decision over Zach Horan at 133 pounds, scoring the bout's only offensive points on a second-period front headlock and accumulating 1:17 in riding-time advantage. Fifth-year senior Kellen Russell (High Bridge, N.J./Blair Academy) survived a first-period scare to claim a 12-9 decision against Scott Mattingly at 141 pounds. Russell, ranked second, converted on a pair of early takedowns and rode for most of the frame before getting caught in a cradle out of a late scramble. Mattingly, who earned five points for the reversal and near fall, ran out of time at the buzzer and held a two-point advantage early in the third. Russell finished on three takedowns in the frame, sealing the win with a high crotch in the final 20 seconds. He improved to 20-2 on the season. Junior/sophomore Eric Grajales (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) neutralized the Chippewas' early bonus point with one of his own, earning a 12-4 major decision against Joey Kielbasa at 149 pounds. Grajales, ranked 10th, scored four takedowns in the match, including three off of Kielbasa's leg attacks, and added a two-point tilt early in the second frame. Grajales' win pulled the Wolverines ahead, 10-4. The Chippewas evened the score with decision victories in swing matches at 157 and 165 pounds. Junior/sophomore Brandon Zeerip (Fremont, Mich./Hesperia HS) put Donnie Corby on his back for five points in the first period of the former bout, but the CMU wrestler reversed the position, added a second-period double leg and earned the riding point to seal a 10-8 win. Fifth-year senior Justin Zeerip (Fremont, Mich./Hesperia HS) rallied from an early deficit to halt the Chippewas' momentum with a 13-5 major decision over Craig Kelliher at 174 pounds. After giving up an early single leg and fighting off another, fifth-ranked Zeerip converted on five unanswered takedowns, including two in the third to seal the bonus point. Zeerip improved to 17-1 on the season. The Wolverines (5-2, 3-1 Big Ten) will return to Big Ten Conference competition next weekend with dual slates against Minnesota and Michigan State. U-M will travel to Minneapolis, Minn., on Friday (Jan. 27) for a 7:30 p.m. CST match against the Golden Gophers at the Sports Pavilion before returning home to face intrastate rival Michigan State on Sunday (Jan. 29) in a 2 p.m. contest at Cliff Keen Arena. MORGANTOWN, W. Va. -- In a match that saw a total of four lead changes and two ties, the West Virginia University wrestling team defeated Clarion 23-20 after a last match decision victory by heavyweight Brandon Williamson. “Brandon handled the pressure,†said coach Craig Turnbull. “Everywhere in the lineup has a different responsibility. Brandon Williamson As a lightweight, you have to dictate the start, middleweights need to keep the momentum going and heavyweights have to win if it comes down to you. He did just that and got the win when we needed it.†The match started out with the Mountaineers taking the first three matches of the afternoon. Junior Shane Young (125) created early momentum for WVU, as he earned a 19-4 tech fall. Young earned the critical bonus points in the closing seconds of the match, as he rolled his opponent over and was able to score three near fall points. Redshirt sophomore Nathan Pennesi (133) outworked his opponent to score an 8-4 decision victory and his 21st win of the season. Sophomore Michael Morales kept the streak alive for the Mountaineers, but it wasn't without difficulty. Morales fell behind 4-2 in the first period, but was able to rally in the second and fend off a late third period charge by opponent Tyler Bedelyon. “Our lightweights did a nice job of getting us started again – that was so critical,†Turnbull said. “When Shane got upset last night, people just didn't handle it well, and things started to snowball.†With WVU up 11-0, it looked as though they had rebounded from the previous evening's disappointing loss to Bloomsburg, but the Golden Eagles went on a run of their own. Clarion ran off three straight victories that included a major decision and a pin that gave them a 14-11 lead. Lance Bryson (174) changed the tides again, however, and the Mountaineers found themselves on top after he defeated Clarion's Nick Milano. With the match tied at 1-1, Bryson was able to snatch Milano's legs and score on a takedown with 27 seconds remaining in the third period. “Lance's match was a must win,†Turnbull said. “He hadn't had that kind of pressure for two years since he sat out the last two years due to injury. He is slowly building his confidence in a dual meet setting.†Redshirt senior Matt Ryan (184) followed Bryson's momentum changing win with an even more crucial victory. The Eighty-Four, Pa., native pinned Steven Cressley 2:44 into the first period. The pin was Ryan's 20th of his career. With one more pin this season, Ryan will move into a tie for fifth place all-time in program history. “You hope to get those types of poised performances from a redshirt senior like Matt Ryan,†Turnbull said. “If you gave a game ball, you would give it to him. They were in position to take a win away from us, but Matt put himself in a position to win.†After Alex Thomas pinned WVU's Nicholas Hylton at 197 pounds, the match score was evened at 20. Williamson did not wilt under the pressure, though, as he locked up the victory for the Mountaineers. The Riverside, Conn., native scored two crucial near fall points with 30 seconds remaining in the second period. The near fall points, along with 3:19 of riding time, gave Williamson a 3-1 decision victory. “I thrive off of the pressure,†said Williamson. “I love going out there with an extra incentive to get a win. This match said a lot about our character. If we are down, we are not going to stay down.†WVU is now 4-3 overall this season and holds a 1-1 record in Eastern Wrestling League action. The loss bumps Clarion to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the EWL. BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Wrestling its second dual in less than 24 hours, No. 15 Lehigh picked up its third straight dual win against an EIWA opponent, downing Bucknell 25-15 Saturday inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The Mountain Hawks won five bouts plus a forfeit to junior Robert Hamlin, and posted four wins by major decision as they improved to 8-4 overall and 4-1 against EIWA opponents. The Bison (2-11, 2-1 EIWA) won three straight bouts from 157-174 to take a 15-11 lead, before Lehigh captured the last three weight classes with Hamlin's forfeit win and major decisions by seniors Kadeem Samuels and Zach Rey. “Everybody went out and wrestled the full time and that's what won this for us,†explained Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro. “You want to see seven minutes of wrestling and we did that. Those back-to-back weigh-ins can be tough but they responded well to that.†Junior Alex Abreu dropped the opening bout 7-3 to Bucknell's Austin Miller, but just as in Friday night's win over Rutgers, freshman Mason Beckman responded with a major decision win, 16-8 over Shawn Armato at 133. Beckman was unsuccessful in turning Armato for near fall points, but was very efficient in totaling eight takedowns en route to his eighth straight victory. At 141 sophomore Steve Dutton yielded the first takedown against Derrik Russell but responded with ten unanswered points in a 10-2 major decision. Dutton scored a first period takedown to take a 3-2 lead after one period and took command of the match with a three point near fall in the second period. Freshman Anthony Salupo completed the three-bout Lehigh run with a 5-3 win over Alex Pellicciotti at 149. Salupo scored a takedown in the first period, but was reversed in the second after building up a riding time advantage. After choosing neutral in the third period, Salupo scored the decisive takedown in the third period and added riding time to account for the 5-3 score. Bucknell cut Lehigh's lead to 11-6 at intermission when John Regan bested Brian Tanen 4-1 at 157. In the first bout following the break, senior Sean Bilodeau and Corey Lear were scoreless in the first period when Bilodeau initiated a shot that nearly put Lear on his back. The Bison wrestler was able to turn the tables in the scramble and put Bilodeau on his back before recording the fall at 2:23 and giving Bucknell a 12-11 lead. Stephen McPeek made it three straight wins for the visitors with a 7-6 win over junior Kevin Bailey, who earned the spot-start at 174. In a back-and-forth affair, each wrestler scored a first period takedown, but McPeek hit a standing reversal at the first period buzzer to lead 4-3 after one. Bailey scored the only takedown of the second period and escaped to take a 6-5 lead early in the third before McPeek responded with the winning takedown with nine seconds remaining. The swing matches were the ones we thought they would be,†Santoro said. “We knew 141, 149 and 157 would be battles. We gave Kevin Bailey a shot and it just didn't work out for him today. Giving up six at 165, that was a toss-up match that went the other way. You don't plan on those but sometimes they happen.†The forfeit to Hamlin allowed Lehigh to regain the lead 17-15. Samuels then used a little late period reversal magic of his own to virtually clinch the match for Lehigh with his major decision over Joe McMullan at 197. Samuels built a 13-6 lead in the third period on the strength of a 6-0 takedown edge, but looking for one more score, it was McMullan who scored a takedown to make the score 13-8. In the final seconds of the bout, Samuels scored a reversal and with 2:31 of riding time, reached the major decision with a 16-8 win. Rey closed the dual with a dominant 12-4 major decision of Tyler Lyster. Rey totaled five takedowns to earn the bonus win despite failing to turn the undersized Lyster. Lehigh is now 8-0 all-time against Bucknell in wrestling, and is 25-2-1 in EIWA duals under pat Santoro. The Mountain Hawks will now take to the road for their next four duals, beginning with a Midwest swing next weekend. Lehigh will wrestle Central Michigan Friday January 27 in Mount Pleasant, Mich., before trekking to Norman, Okla. to face the Oklahoma Sooners on Sunday January 29. Following a weekend off, Lehigh will then travel to England to face Brown, Saturday February 11 at 3 p.m. and Harvard February 12 at noon. Friday night's Lehigh-Central Michigan dual is slated for a 7 p.m. start. The match can be heard on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 as well as Lehighsports.com. Results: 125 – Austin Miller (Bucknell) dec. LARAMIE, Wyo. -- For the second time this month, the Wyoming wrestling program earned its first-ever dual victory over an opponent as the Cowboys cruised past Cal Poly on Friday night in Laramie, 26-9. The Pokes (3-2 overall, 0-0 Western Wrestling Conference) beat Oklahoma for the first time Jan. 3 in Laramie, and now can lay claim to a win over the Mustangs, a team which held a 4-0 all-time mark over UW. Wyoming used a drastically different lineup than in its previous four duals, and it paid dividends for the wrestlers and the 847 fans who packed the UniWyo Sports Complex. Three Pokes made their dual debuts Friday night, including redshirt freshmen Robert Stroh, Andy McCulley and Leland Pfeifer. Senior Michael Martinez, ranked 19th, took down Cal Poly's Michael Clemmensen at 125 pounds with a 17-6 major decision to start the dual and give Wyoming a 4-0 lead. No. 18 Zach Zehner, UW's redshirt freshman, followed up with a 15-5 major decision over Chris Calcagno to give the Pokes an 8-0 advantage after two matches. The Mustangs (4-4, 2-2 Pac-12) got on the board when fourth-ranked Boris Novachkov defeated Wyoming's Chase Smith at 141 pounds in a 6-2 decision. That bout made the score 8-3, but Cal Poly would draw no closer. Stroh gutted out a 9-2 decision over Cal Poly's Kyle Chene at 149 pounds, followed by McCulley, who took home a 6-0 decision over Gianpier Yanez at 157 pounds. “I saw some attitude out of McCulley,†Wyoming coach Mark Branch said. “He's got a mean streak in him and I like it. (Stroh and McCulley) performed well enough that we'll see them again.†Senior Shane Onufer lived up to his billing as the No. 3 wrestler in the nation at 165 pounds, as he defeated Mustang Paul Woodman in a 20-4 technical fall. That win gave Wyoming a 19-3 lead with just four bouts remaining. But Cal Poly's fourth-ranked Ryan DesRoches beat Wyoming's Pat Martinez in a gritty 6-1 decision at 174 pounds to give the Mustangs six total points after seven matches. Senior Dallas Hintz got his first dual action of the season for Wyoming, and he didn't disappoint. Hintz defeated Sean Dougherty of Cal Poly in a 6-2 decision. That victory gave Wyoming 22 points with just two matches remaining. “We wanted to get Dallas into the lineup,†Branch said. “He works hard and is a good leader for us. We wanted to give him an opportunity to give him a match in front of his home crowd.†The highlight of the night for UW fans was the performance of three-time All-America honoree Joe LeBlanc at 197 pounds. LeBlanc, the top-ranked wrestler in the nation at 184 pounds, moved up a weight class to take on 18th-ranked Ryan Smith of Cal Poly. LeBlanc built an 11-0 advantage and kept up the pressure throughout the match, ending up with the 12-1 major decision for four team points. Pfeifer battled in the heavyweight match, but Cal Poly's Kelan Bragg proved to be too much, as Bragg took home the 11-7 decision in the nightcap. “It all kind of worked, because we wanted to give Joe a tougher match and we wanted to get Leland (Pfeifer) in the lineup,†Branch said of his lineup shuffle. “We were working some different scenarios, depending on how the dual went and we didn't make any final decision until right there at the end. Everything worked so we could wrestle Dallas, bump Joe up and wrestle Leland at heavyweight. “Things worked out to where we could reward some guys. It was nice to see some new faces out there. It was a little risky, because Cal Poly has a good team. We didn't know a lot about some of their new kids. You never take anything for granted. It was a little bit of a risk because we committed to this, but we were fortunate to do things the way we wanted to.†The Cowboys will open WWC action at 7 p.m. Saturday versus the Utah Valley Wolverines. STILLWATER, Okla. -- The top-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team picked up six bonus-point wins Friday night to stay undefeated and roll past Arizona State, 33-6, in front of 2,088 fans at Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Cowboys (7-0) got bonus points from Jon Morrison at 125, Jordan Oliver at 133, Jamal Parks at 149, Dallas Bailey at 165, Chris Perry at 174 and Blake Rosholt at 197 pounds. OSU amassed 42 total takedowns in the dual while surrendering just seven to the Sun Devils (5-8). “I think we're looking pretty good,†Oliver said. “We have been putting up bonus points and everyone is working hard. That wasn't our best match, but we will get better. There are a lot of things we need to work on and we can take a lot from that match.†Morrison got the dual started with an 11-1 major decision over David Prado to put the Cowboys on top for good. Oliver followed with a 25-9 technical fall over Shane McGough of ASU. Oliver improves to 11-1, and all of his wins have come with bonus points, including 10 falls. In tonight's bout, he recorded 10 takedowns to give him a team-best season total of 30 in just seven dual bouts. Parks added four team points with his 15-5 major decision over Joel Smith. He entered the final period up 6-3, but recorded an escape, a trio of takedowns and stalling point to seal the major decision and his 17th win of the year to move to 17-0. In the second of three OSU technical falls of the night, Bailey picked up his ninth win and first technical fall of the year with a 19-4 victory over Rush Hall in 4:48. In just his second career match at 174 pounds, Perry followed with his 13th victory of the season as he earned an 11-1 major decision over Eric Starks. It was his third major decision of the season and improved his undefeated record to 13-0. Rosholt earned the last bonus points of the dual when he picked up his second technical fall of the year with a 19-4 win over Chase Eskam in 6:39. Although he didn't record any bonus points, OSU heavyweight Alan Gelogaev might have delivered the most impressive win of the night when knocked off ninth-ranked Levi Cooper, 6-1, to pick up his 17th win of the year. Oklahoma State's other win came at 157 pounds as Albert White defeated Hans Rasmusson, 7-3. OSU hosts Iowa State Sunday at 2 p.m. With the Cowboys and Cyclones each holding 1,013 all-time dual wins, the winner will take sole possession of first place on the list of most total dual wins. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Behind seven wins, the No. 7 Ohio State wrestling team downed No. 2 Iowa, 21-9, Friday night in front of 5,684 fans in St. John Arena. The Buckeyes (9-2; 3-2 Big Ten) handed the Hawkeyes their first conference loss of the season. “It's great,†Tom Ryan, head coach, said. “These guys put so much time into what they do. They have six o'clock mornings, they have eight hours of sleep and studying. They have so many things going on in their lives, this was great. It was about time we beat them.†The last Buckeye victory against the Hawkeyes came Feb. 12, 1966, 46 seasons ago. “When I left my previous position, we came here for this,†Ryan said. “This one is called the sleeping giant. I know the guys on the other side of the mat. Those men were teammates. I know how they react when they get punched in the nose, they do not fall down, they punch back. The nice thing is the battle is on. Ohio State is officially in a fist fight. I am very proud of this group of guys.†Down 3-0 early following the opening match at 125 pounds, the Buckeyes won five consecutive matches to take a 15-3 lead entering the 174-pound bout. Included in the string of wins was a 7-0 shutout by Buckeye redshirt freshman Logan Stieber over No. 2 Tony Ramos at 133 pounds. Stieber, ranked fourth in the nation, scored a 3-point nearfall, takedown and escape, in addition to compiling 1:57 of riding time, in his 19th victory of the season. Freshman 141-pounder Hunter Stieber posted an impressive 4-2 decision over No. 3 Montell Marion to follow up his older brother's performance. Up 4-1 after two periods, H. Stieber, No. 7 in the country, allowed Marion, a two-time senior All-American, only two escapes for the match. At 149 pounds, freshman and No. 16 Cam Tessari continued the winning trend when he decisioned Mike Kelly, 9-4. The score was tied, 4-4, after the second period, but after Tessari scored an escape to open the third, he went on to record a takedown and a 2-point nearfall. A trio of takedowns and an escape helped redshirt freshman Josh Demas beat Derek St. John at 157 pounds. Demas, a Columbus, Ohio, native surrendered a takedown and escape to St. John in his 7-3 victory. The Buckeyes entered the 15-minute intermission with the momentum and freshman Derek Garcia maintained Ohio State's edge with his dramatic 6-5 win over No. 6 Mike Evans at 165 pounds. Garcia entered the final period with a 6-4 lead and despite Evans' escape just one second into the third period, Garcia was able to hold on for the win. With redshirt junior C.J. Magrum unable to wrestle at 184 pounds, sophomore Joe Grandominico received the start at 174 pounds, while redshirt sophomore Nick Heflin started at 184 pounds. In his first dual match of the season, Grandominico suffered a 7-1 setback, but fought hard in not giving up the major decision to No. 9 Ethen Lofthouse. After a scoreless first period, Heflin, No. 8 in the nation, and Vinnie Wagner traded scoring in the second and third periods, but the Buckeye from Massillon, Ohio, scored his final takedown with 30 seconds remaining to seal the victory. Freshman Andrew Campolattano's 8-6 win over Grant Gambrall at 197 pounds officially locked up the win for the Buckeyes. The score was tied, 5-5, in the third period, but Campolattano scored a takedown with 45 seconds remaining for a 7-5 lead. Although Gambrall scored an escape with 15 seconds left, a technical violation on the Hawkeye gave Campolattano the 8-6 final. In the final match of the evening, redshirt sophomore and heavyweight Peter Capone lost, 6-2, to Blake Rasing, while 125-pounder Johnni Dijulius was edged by NCAA Champion and two-time All-American Matt McDonough, 5-2. The Buckeyes are back in action Jan. 29 when they wrestle No. 3 Penn State in State College, Pa., at 2 p.m. The match will air live on BTN.com. Notes: • The Buckeyes' match vs. the Hawkeyes was streamed live on BTN.com and is scheduled to air on BTN at noon Tuesday, Jan. 24. • Ohio State football defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Luke Fickell was in attendance. MADISON, Wis. -- The Purdue wrestling team bounced back Friday night, setting a pair of team scoring records in a 41-3 Big Ten dual victory at the University of Wisconsin at UW Field House. The Boilermakers posted their highest team-point mark in a conference dual in school history and had their largest scoring margin in a Big Ten dual ever as well, improving to 7-7 overall and 2-3 in conference action. The win is Purdue's second straight over Wisconsin, following up on last year's 18-16 victory in Madison, and is the 14th in school history over the Badgers. The Boilermakers scored bonus points in bunches, picking up three falls, two technical falls and a major decision as they won nine of the 10 matches in the dual. As the match was aired live on the Big Ten Network, the Boilermakers improved to 2-3 on national broadcasts on the young network. “I'm proud of our team for coming back strong after our last few outings, and performing well in the national spotlight,†said Purdue head coach Scott Hinkel. “Things hadn't been going our way, but we know there's a lot of season left and time to turn things around. We have to keep things in perspective and get ready to keep going forward.†Sophomore Camden Eppert returned to the lineup in spectacular fashion, rolling out a 17-2 technical fall over Badger freshman Austin Hietpas at 125 pounds. Eppert started slow, scoring just one takedown in the first period for a 2-0 lead, but followed up with a reversal and three back points in the second, and three more takedowns and three more back points in the third. Eppert picked up his sixth win of the season and first career technical fall. Ninth-ranked classmate Cashé Quiroga followed Eppert's lead at 133 pounds, scoring a 20-5 technical fall over Wisconsin junior Shane McQuade in just two periods to give Purdue a 10-0 team advantage. Quiroga scored early and often over the five minutes of action, totaling seven takedowns and a pair of three-point nearfalls. Freshman 141-pounder Brandon Nelsen matched senior Matt Fields for the team lead with his eighth fall of the season, sticking freshman Thomas Glenn in 5:32. Nelsen was slow and steady, scoring a takedown in all three periods before putting Glenn on his blades for the fall and six team points. Purdue's Ivan Lopouchanski was dominant in the night's only contest between two ranked individuals as the 15th-ranked Boilermaker junior scored a 9-1 major decision over No. 14 Badger junior Cole Schmitt at 149 pounds. Lopouchanski spent most of the match in the top position, posting three takedowns, a reversal and nearly four minutes of riding time, earning his ninth win of the season. The Badgers' lone win came at 157 pounds as sophomore Shawn Perry scored an 8-2 decision over Purdue junior Tommy Churchard. Churchard scored the first takedown of the match, but Perry quickly earned a reversal and followed with a pair of back points to gain firm control of the bout. Perry added a takedown in the second and an escape and riding time point in the third for the victory, preventing the Badgers from surrendering their second consecutive shutout. Boilermaker sophomore Kyle Mosier grinded out a 5-0 victory over Wisconsin freshman Alex Yde at 165 pounds, using a pair of takedowns to seal his 11th win of the season, while freshman Drake Stein pushed the Purdue advantage to 29-3 at 174 pounds, sticking Wisconsin rookie Frank Cousins for his sixth fall of the year. Cousins countered a shot from Stein to take a 2-0 lead and appeared to be in firm control with over a minute of riding time, but Stein worked to his feet, grabbed a headlock and reversed Cousins to the mat in a huge throw. With plenty of time left in the period, Stein worked patiently for the fall and finally got the whistle at 2:10. Freshman Braden Atwood defended his No. 18 national ranking at 184 pounds against Badger rookie Timmy McCall, outlasting McCall for a 6-0 decision. Both of the first two frames were scoreless, but Atwood got things going in the third, reversing McCall and then turning him for three back points to seal the contest and improve to 17-7 overall and 6-1 in conference matches. With the team result secure, the return of Purdue senior 197-pounder A.J. Kissel to the mat was icing on the cake for the Old Gold and Black. Kissel spent just 1:47 on the mat in his return, quickly pinning Wisconsin sophomore Jackson Hein for his 46th career fall. Kissel matches Purdue great Dave Lilovich for second all-time at Purdue on the career falls list and is now just one shy of the Boilermaker record of 47, held by Hinkel. Senior Roger Vukobratovich closed the dual with his career-best 16th win of the season, downing sophomore Cole Tobin by decision, 8-4. Vukobratovich scored two takedowns in the first period and picked up another in the third before giving up a score late as he chased the major decision. The Boilermakers continue conference action Sunday at seventh-ranked Nebraska, facing the Cornhuskers for the first time in 20 seasons and for the first-time as a Big Ten opponent. NORMAN, Okla. -- Wrestling without starters Chris Spangler (174) and Boaz Beard (184), No. 16 Iowa State gave No. 7 Oklahoma all it wanted on the Sooner mat in McCasland Fieldhouse Friday. OU won the meet, 19-16. But Cyclone hopes for the future were buoyed by freshman 141-pounder Luke Goettl's 11-9 overtime win over No. 1 ranked and undefeated Kendric Maple. Oklahoma is now 8-3 overall. Iowa State is 2-10. "This was a great effort by our team wrestling without two key guys," Iowa State head coach Kevin Jackson said. "Luke is truly turning the corner. BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- No. 15 Lehigh won seven bouts, including three bonus point victories as the Mountain Hawks downed No. 24 Rutgers 26-9 Friday night in the annual Billy Sheridan Memorial Dual at Stabler Arena. Freshman Mason Beckman and senior Zach Rey posted wins by major decision to lead the Mountain Hawks, who moved to 7-4 on the dual season, and 3-1 against EIWA opponents. After losing the opening bout of the night, the Mountain Hawks posted four consecutive impressive victories to take a 13-3 lead into intermission. “We wrestled well,†said Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro. “Rutgers is a good team and has been for a few years now. They had some guys out. We had some guys out, which is unfortunate for our sport at this time of year. We wrestled hard and fought hard, which you need to do against a conference rival.†Beckman got things started for the Mountain Hawks with a 14-6 major decision over Joe Langel at 133. The freshman totaled five takedowns, including three in the third period and added a third period reversal to break open what was a 5-4 match. Sophomore Steve Dutton continued the momentum with an 8-2 decision over Billy Ashnault at 141. Dutton led 3-0 after two periods before he earned a third period reversal, and a takedown, falling just short of what would've been Lehigh's second consecutive bonus win. Rutgers (11-2, 4-1 EIWA) was without the services of No. 6 Mario Mason at 149, and freshman Anthony Salupo was impressive in a 6-1 victory over Mason's backup Anthony Perrotti. Salupo scored two first period takedowns to build an early 4-1 lead and added a pair of escapes. Senior Brian Tanen closed out the four match run, scoring a third period takedown to break a 1-1 tie in a 4-1 win over Anthony Volpe at 157. In the first two bouts of the second half of the dual, the Scarlet Knights crept back into the mix with a pair of close wins by their two ranked wrestlers. No. 14 Scott Winston scored a late four-point move to edge senior Sean Bilodeau 5-1 at 165, while 17th-ranked Jeff Zannetti won 3-2 over freshman Nate Brown, with the deciding point coming from an escape after Brown used an injury timeout due to cramping. Junior Robert Hamlin posted a six-point win for the Brown and White after winning by injury default over Dan Seidenberg at 184. Seidenberg appeared to injure his shoulder while sprawling on the edge of the mat and defaulted just 1:36 into the contest. Leading 19-9 after Hamlin's win senior Kadeem Samuels clinched the dual for the Mountain Hawks with a 6-4 win over Dan Rinaldi at 197. The wrestlers traded first period takedowns, and Samuels countered his way into the decisive score late in the third period. “It was difficult,†Samuels said of the late scramble. “I shot. I think he re-shot. He got in deep on my leg and I had to really sprawl. I tried to spin behind but I thought he was going to go through. I threw my hip into the mat and was able to grab the ankle and come around to get the takedown. It was just hard work.†Rey closed out the dual with a dominant 15-5 major decision over Carl Buchholz at heavyweight, as the defending national champion broke open a close bout with three second period takedowns, and then continued to add to his lead with a penalty point and late third period score. The Mountain Hawks will return to the mats on Saturday when they host Bucknell at 2 p.m. inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Tickets can be purchased online at Lehighsports.com or prior to the match Saturday inside Grace Hall. Results: 125 – Vincent Dellafave (Rutgers) dec.
