The Collegiate Careers of the Last 20 #1 Overall Recruits
InterMat Staff posted an article in Recruiting
Earlier this week, the top recruit in the Class of 2026, Bo Bassett, announced that he will continue his career at the University of Iowa. His commitment made it the second time in the last ten years that Iowa has been able to nab the top wrestler in their respective class. Of course, Spencer Lee was that guy in 2017. Now that the top recruit from 2026 is off the board, it seemed like a good time to check on how the top recruits over the last 20 years have fared at the collegiate level (and beyond). More often than not, they have done very well. With more national tournaments available to high schoolers, it provides more opportunities for recruiting junkies like Willie Saylor to watch and make accurate evaluations. Back in the day, before recruiting rankings were as prevalent, you would have to rely on high school state tournament performance and Fargo results as your best data points. Before we get sidetracked, these are the #1 overall recruits from the last 20 years - grouped by the schools they signed with and initially attended. We list David Taylor for Penn State because he signed with Iowa State, but never actually enrolled. Greg Kerklivet is with Ohio State because he went there for about a semester. Next to each wrestler is a brief summation of their collegiate credentials, along with any Senior world/Olympic accolades - if applicable. Of course, Bassett and 2025’s PJ Duke have nothing by their names as they have not yet enrolled at their college of choice. This is the last week of your league’s regular season before hitting the postseason tournament. Hopefully you find yourself in the Championship bracket (Top-4) of your league, and not the middle or, sorry to say, losers bracket. Finish strong, ready up, and win the week. The Messiah Open is the only “big” tournament on the books, but will be filled with mainly non-D1 competition so it would be a crap-shoot. A reminder of some important rules: Wrestlers entered at a weight must compete at that weight or else their results will not be counted. Wrestlers in the “Floater” spots can compete at ANY weight and accumulate Fantasy points. A wrestler will LOCK on your roster at 11 am ET on the day of their first competition for the week. (refer to the SHP’s Week Preview) Only results against D1 competition (starters, backups, and redshirts) will count towards Fantasy Points. Check your league settings to know how many add/drops are permitted per week. Have a question, concern, suggestions, or just want to chat about Fantasy Wrestling? Hit us up on Twitter or head over to the InterMat Forums where we have a Fantasy Wrestling dedicated Forum page! Can you believe it! It's the first full week of February and we're coming down the home stretch of the 2024-25 collegiate season. In 2025, we've settled into a regular schedule, primarily focused on dual competition. A total of 46 duals will be contested over the next four days. Since it can be difficult to figure out where and when to watch all of these events, InterMat has put together a list of all of the live-streamed events occurring this week. Below are the dates/times and how to watch each match (with links). To make this guide even easier to find, we've added a link on our homepage and the latest Live Streaming Guide will appear right under the header articles. Two days ago, the #1 overall recruit in the Class of 2026 Bo Bassett made his collegiate decision. Now, it’s Bishop McCort teammate Jax Forrest’s time. Forrest is currently ranked #2 overall in the junior class and would likely be #1 in most classes. Forrest joined FloWrestling’s FRL to announce his commitment to wrestle at Oklahoma State. Forrest was a 2024 Pennsylvania AA state champion at 127 lbs. There’s a good chance Forrest would be a two-time champion had his school been eligible to compete in the 2023 postseason. He’s currently ranked #1 in the nation at 132 lbs. On a national level, Forrest has captured a pair of titles at the Super 32 and was third on two occasions. Earlier this season, Forrest won the Walsh Ironman for the first - after finishing as a runner-up the previous two seasons. He also has a pair of Junior National freestyle titles from Fargo, the most recent coming last summer at 132 lbs. Before each of the last three high seasons, Forrest has been selected to compete in FloWrestling’s “Who’s #1” dual meet. Each time he’s been victorious with his most recent win coming over Illinois’ Seth Mendoza, 7-3. Forrest had experience outside of the United States, as well. He was a U17 World silver medalist in 2022 at 55 kg. In 2023, Forrest wrestled in the best-of-three series for another spot on the U17 team. Forrest also fell to the eventual U20 world champion, Luke Lilledahl, in the 2024 U20 World Team Trials. At the 2024 Olympic Team Trials, Forrest advanced to the third-place match, despite being one of the youngest in the field. Forrest’s commitment now gives Oklahoma State two of the top three juniors in the country and four of the top 22. On Sunday, we wrote about #3 Dreshaun Ross (Fort Dodge, IA) committing to the Cowboys. Now, David Taylor’s program has two blue-chippers within the same week. The pair join #14 Rocklin Zinkin and #22 Kellen Wolbert in a Cowboys Class of 2026 that looks extremely imposing. The Class of 2025 is excellent too, with three top-ten recruits and 10 Big Boarder’s total. With the recent run on elite prospects from the Class of 2026, there are only three wrestlers currently in the top-ten that are uncommitted #6 Jordyn Raney, #7 Jaydn Raney, and #8 Michael Mocco.

As we enter the last week of the “regular season” in Fantasy Wrestling, some big moves up (and down) the Standings in Week 14. For these standings, we will be using the Basic Fantasy Scoring through @WrestleStat (Win by Dec +3, Loss by Dec -3, Win by Pin +6, Loss by Pin -6, etc). Only results against D1 competition (starters, backups, and redshirts) will count towards Fantasy Points. Standings are first ordered based on total Fpts, then if tied by Points Per Match (PPM). Week 14 Notes: American’s Maximillian Leete is your #1 Fantasy Wrestler for Week 14. Securing 23 Fpts at the Edinboro Open. This point total also helped Leete massively jump up the Overall Standings from outside the Top-33 in Week 13 to now #9. In fact, nine of the Top-10 in Week 14 got their points from the Edinboro Open. Marc-Anthony McGowan and heavyweight teammate Sebastian Garibaldi tied for 10th with 15 Fpts in their three duals. The Overall Standings remain virtually unchanged at the top, except for Army’s Brady Colbert sneaking in to the #3 spot and Leete, as previously mentioned. Colbert currently has 39 matches wrestled, getting close to Hall of Famer Jonathan Ross’s record for most matches in a Fantasy season. Jesse Mendez remains #1 for the fourth week in a row, but his lead shortened by one Fpt to Matt Ramos (now only four pts behind). Week 14 Leaders Year-Long Fantasy Point Standings
