This weekend, we had a major girls high school state tournament along with many others. Texas, with has long been a power in girls high school wrestling, held their season-ending championship event. Plenty of future collegiate stars were on the mat. Other state tournaments that featured plenty of college recruits were Colorado, Georgia, and Montana. In year's past, we've tracked how the boys collegiate recruits fared at their respective state tournaments and will do it again this season. In conjunction, it would be nice to do the same thing for the girls who will be wrestling at the next level. Girls high school recruiting doesn't get the type of fanfare that it does on the boys side, so we'd like to change that. Below, wrestlers are sorted by their choice of college. They are listed with their high school and the weight class that they wrestled at the state tournament - along with their results. This is only for girls that qualified for, and wrestled at, their state tournament. There are more recruits we have listed on our commitment page who did not qualify for their respective state tournaments. We will update this article each week as more results become official. We're trying to stay on top of this, but there are probably some recruits we've missed. If you do not see a recruit that should have been added, please fill out our commitment form or email me at earl@matscouts.com . 2025 HS State Tournament Results for Wrestling Recruits (2/17/25)
InterMat Staff posted an article in Recruiting
This weekend, high school state tournament season really went into full swing. States like Georgia, Colorado, and Texas held their much-anticipated season-ending tournaments - along with plenty of others. As these tournaments conclude, it begs the question, "how did my favorite team's recruits fare?" In some smaller states, it's almost a given that your college-bound studs are collecting another state title, while in the power states, with the deepest talent pools, such achievements are not guaranteed. Either way, we've combed through results from all of the state tournaments that have taken place thus far to find out how everyone's recruits have finished. We will update this article each week as more results become official. If you do not see a recruit that should be added, please fill out our commitment form or email me at earl@matscouts.com . On Sunday afternoon, one of the biggest rivalries in college athletics will make its way to the wrestling mat. No, we’re not talking about Iowa and Penn State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, or any other rivalries that might initially come to mind for wrestling fans. It’s something bigger than that. It’s Army/Navy - which is dubbed the “Star Match.” Whenever these two service academies meet, in any sport, it’s a big deal. Army head coach Kevin Ward once told me that when his squad wins, “his email will be full of congratulatory messages from high-ranking officers who may not even be wrestling fans.” Army’s West Point campus has a tunnel where every win over Navy, in every sport, is listed on the wall. What makes this rivalry unique and special is that, somewhere down the line, these two service branches might need to rely on each other and fight together against a common enemy. Each branch is filled with selfless individuals sworn to defend our country. Just to receive admission to either institution, you have to have excellent high school grades and demonstrate leadership skills - in addition to anything on the athletic field. All that being said, both branches are filled with men and women who are leaders and highly competitive in all facets of life. One of which is sports. Despite any similarities between the athletes and their service to our country, they hate losing to the other academies. When these two academies meet on the wrestling mats, you can “throw the records out.” It doesn’t really matter who might have the better team in each year. The “Star Match” takes place every year and rotates between the two schools. Army will host the festivities on Sunday. Even though Army won, 18-17, last season, the Naval Academy leads the all-time series 52-11-5. The wrestling version of this rivalry has taken off since Kevin Ward arrived at West Point in 2014. His first win over Navy snapped a 17-year winless streak for the Black Knights and he had guided Army to four-straight wins (2017-20) - a feat that hadn’t been accomplished previously by an Army coach. Not coincidentally, after the 2020 season, Navy made a coaching change and brought in the legendary Cary Kolat. Immediately, Kolat proceeded to reel off three straight wins over Army. That brought us to 2024 which saw Army regain control with a one-point win. Will Ward’s team start another streak or will Navy return the favor on their rival’s home mat? Last year’s results: 157: Nate Lukez (Army) maj Jonathan Ley (Navy) 11-1 (4-0 Army) 165: Gunner Filipowicz (Army) dec Andrew Cerniglia (Navy) 5-4 (7-0 Army) 174: Ben Pasiuk (Army) dec Danny Wask (Navy) 7-3 (10-0 Army) 184: David Key (Navy) dec Dillon Sheehy (Army) 4-1 (10-3 Army) 197: Cael Crebs (Navy) dec Wolfgang Frable (Army) 7-1 (10-6 Army) 285: Grady Griess (Navy) 7-2 Lucas Stoddard (Army) 7-2 (10-9 Army) 125: Ethan Berginc (Army) tech Dayton DelViscio (Navy) 18-3 (15-9 Army) 133: Braden Basile (Army) dec Brendan Ferretti (Navy) 5-4 (18-9 Army) 141: Josh Koderhandt (Navy) maj Logan Brown (Army) 13-3 (18-13 Army) 149: Kaemen Smith (Navy) maj Matthew Williams (Army) 17-8 (18-17 Army) Key matches this year: 141 (favor Navy) Richard Treanor #32 in rankings vs Josh Koderhandt #7 Only ranked matchup of the night (no previous meetings) Koderhant 4-0 all time vs Army opponents, 3-0 in this dual 157 (toss up) – Dakota Morris (Army) vs Jonathan Ley (Navy) Ley is 5th in EIWA rankings, Morris is 6th (no previous meetings) 165 (slight lean Army) – Gunner Filipowicz (Army) vs Dylan Elmore (Navy) Filipowicz #17 in rankings Elmore just beat Mulvaney, Mulvaney just beat Filipowicz – all within last two weeks 184 (toss up) Jake Gilfoil (Army) vs Daniel Williams (Navy) Williams #2 in EIWA, Gilfoil UR Gilfoil is a FR, Williams is a SO – both competing in their first Star Match 197 – Wolfgang Frable (Army) vs Peyton Thomas (Navy) #28 vs #33 in the national rankings Frable is #5 in the EIWA, Thomas is #3

Sarah Hildebrandt of Colorado Springs, Colo. was named as Assistant National Women’s Coach by USA Wrestling, the national governing body for wrestling in the United States. Hildebrandt, a 2024 Olympic gold medalist in women’s freestyle wrestling, joins USA Wrestling’s National Teams Department, working on the National Women’s Coaching staff, led by National Women’s Coach Terry Steiner and alongside National Women’s Developmental Coach Jessica Medina Bunker. She will be based in Colorado Springs, Colo., where the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center and USA Wrestling national headquarters are based. Hildebrandt is retiring as an athlete to focus on a coaching career. She will help train athletes on the U.S. Senior National Team, as well as the resident athletes at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center. In her role, she will coach U.S. teams in international competition, as well. “I have had a really long career and I’ve gotten the experience of what wrestling has taught me. It has made me so passionate about what this sport can do for people. If I can bring a passion and energy in support of their journey, kind of a door handle to open up their own adventure, that is exciting to me. Wrestling has given me so much. The sport has taught me everything about myself and helped me grow as a woman,” said Sarah Hildebrandt. “It is not just what she has done; it is how she has done it. She has been through everything. She was a kid who couldn’t make the National Team and struggled. She made the World Team and struggled. She got hurt. It was then that she realized things, took a pause and changed. Because of her experiences, there is not a person on our National Team and around our program that doesn’t respect her. The respect is not just about her accomplishment in Paris; it is how she re-invented herself to become a great champion and a great human being. She will become a great coach,” said National Women’s Coach Terry Steiner. “We have talked about creating a value-add for our program. I don’t think there is anything else we could do to have such a great value-add. She is authentic. She took the time to put all of the pieces together, and re-committed herself, year after year. She is the right person,” said Steiner. In addition to her Olympic gold medal at the 2024 Paris Games, Hildebrandt claimed a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She boasts four Senior World medals, a silver medal in 2018 and bronze medals in 2021, 2022 and 2023. Overall, Hildbrandt competed in six Senior World Championships for Team USA. Hildebrandt made her first Senior National Team in 2014, and was a leader in the program. She was also a talented age-group athlete, making three U.S. World Teams, competing in the 2013 World University Games and the U20 World Championships in 2012 and 2013. Hildebrandt was dominant in Senior continental competition, winning a gold medal at the 2019 Pan American Games, while also claiming seven gold medals at the Pan American Championships (2013, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023). Throughout her international career, Hildebrant became well known for her successful technical skills, including an ability to score exposure points when she was on top in the par terre position. A star in college at King University, Hildebrandt was a two-time WCWA national champion and four-time WCWA national finalist. A native of Granger, Ind., Hildebrandt competed at Penn High School as part of the boys wrestling team. She was a successful freestyle wrestler in high school, winning the 2011 Junior Nationals and placing second in the 2010 Junior Nationals. After her college career, Hildebrandt became a U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center resident athlete in Colorado Springs, where she lived and trained full-time. She has been a RUDIS sponsored athlete since 2018. Hildebrandt has been a frequent clinician around the nation, working with both youth and Senior-level athletes, including at the University of Michigan and Fresno State University, as well as numerous USA Wrestling clubs around the nation. She has also make frequent speaking engagements and athlete appearances, sharing her story and helping promote wrestling for girls and women. Hildebrandt received a bachelor’s degree in business marketing from King University in 2015, with a minor in leadership. While at King, she was the President of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and a team caption for the women’s wrestling team. She was named 2018 USA Wrestling Women’s Wrestler of the Year. In 2024, she received a Wrestle Like A Girl Afsoon Courage award. Her 2014 national champion King University women’s wrestling team has been inducted into the King University Hall of Fame. Hildebrandt is excited to work with the U.S. women freestyle athletes in their pursuit of success at the World and Olympic level, with a goal of making the United States the No. 1 power in the world. “We have an endless amount of potential,” said Hildebrandt. “Everyone can see the writing on the wall. We are coming. Once we get there, we are not moving. There are areas we can talk about, technical things, that we will always continue. For us, it will take some courage to step into some unknown places, to go beyond being second and third, and to become the gold.”

Tonight the third-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes will head north to take on a dangerous sixth-ranked Minnesota team with upset on their minds. Minnesota is in search of their first win over Iowa since 2014 when they won 19-15 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Gophers are coming in hot, fresh off a minor upset of Ohio State last Friday night. Minnesota started off slow but captured five of the last six matches to take a 20-17 win. After a win over Purdue on Sunday, Brandon Eggum’s team now sits at 10-1 on the year. So can Minnesota pull the upset? While this is a preview of the evening’s events, it will be slanted toward Minnesota’s ability (or lack thereof) to get the win. What needs to happen for the Gophers to send a sold-out crowd happy from Maturi Pavilion? We’ve got you covered below. 125 lbs This is a match that Minnesota has to get. Despite the disparity in rankings, a win over #26 Joey Cruz by #13 Cooper Flynn isn’t a lock. Cruz won his first two Big Ten duals of the season over Nicolar Rivera and Brendan McCrone. Flynn has split with the pair beating Rivera and getting majored by McCrone. Flynn also tends to wrestle very close matches. Five of his 12 wins have come with margins of three points or less. On the other hand, Cruz has been able to keep it close with All-American Caleb Smith and #14 Maximo Renteria. If you’re Minnesota, be happy with the decision here and move on. 133 lbs Minnesota will have their hands full at 133 lbs trying to either beat Drake Ayala or limit his damage. Ayala’s bonus point percentage is up to almost 60% which is the highest of a non-redshirt season in his career. That being said, Ayala’s only bonus point win over a ranked wrestler came with a tech fall over Wisconsin’s Zan Fugitt. Tyler Wells will be looking to break out of a recent skid that saw him lose three of his last four bouts. Last year, in this dual, Wells posted a 6-4 win over Kale Peterson. The thinking is no bonus points here and go into a 141 lb match where you are favored. 141 lbs This is one of the weights where Minnesota is a clear favorite and needs to win - perhaps even pick up bonus points. Vance Vombaur had one of those Cinderella runs to the NCAA podium last season, as the #26th seed, but there’s no turning into a pumpkin this year. Vombaur has been extremely consistent and has elevated his all-around game. Last Friday, he nearly knocked off NCAA champion Jesse Mendez before falling in sudden victory. Iowa counters with either Ryder Block or Cullan Schriever. For the most part, Vombaur has been able to turn it on and light up the scoreboard when he’s a favor. A major decision might be too much to expect, but Gopher fans should be content to have this as a win during their potential paths to victory. (potential 6-3 lead for Minnesota). 149 lbs Now we’re at a match where Iowa is a clear-cut favorite and has good potential to garner bonus points. Guys on that All-American level or just below it have been able to keep Kyle Parco to a normal decision, but others have given up big points. On the year, Parco has seven tech falls in his 15 wins. Drew Roberts managed to limit damage against Ridge Lovett, but surrendered bonus to the two Dylan’s - D’Emilio and Gilcher. With the excellent top work from Parco, a regular decision might be a bridge too far. We’ll say Iowa takes the lead with a major decision and 7-6 for the team score. 157 lbs This will certainly depend on whether Jacori Teemer is available and how healthy he is. Teemer returned from a two-month injury-related absence to defeat Sammy Sasso, then lost to Tyler Kasak the following week. Teemer didn’t compete in the two duals that followed against Maryland and Nebraska. If on the mat and relatively healthy, you have to give Iowa the advantage. If he’s clearly laboring, Askey is good enough to pull the upset. Now, if Teemer doesn’t wrestle, Iowa can turn to true freshman Miguel Estrada. Estrada has been very competitive against top-ten opponents from Maryland and Nebraska in Teemer’s place. Normally, with a top-ten opponent like Askey, you could pencil in a win against a backup. Not in this situation. This is a huge swing bout. Since we’re presenting Minnesota’s keys to victory, I‘ll give them a decision win here to retake the lead at 9-7. 165 lbs Michael Caliendo has generally been a scoring machine for Iowa. He’s almost pushing 70% on the year for his bonus point rate. Even against a high quality like Andrew Sparks, bonus points have to be in play. If we’re doing this article from an Iowa perspective, their fans would probably assume bonus points. That might be the case, but these two did meet at the Soldier Salute and it was a two-point match in Caliendo’s favor. Most wrestlers are able to open up more in a tournament setting, rather than a competitive dual meet, so that would lead me to think we’re looking at a decision again. Maybe Sparks pulls a shocking upset. We’re not going to advocate for the upset, but will give Caliendo a regular decision. The Hawkeyes retake the lead, 10-9. 174 lbs After three of four losses by Patrick Kennedy, Nelson Brands’ name has reappeared on the Iowa lineup for this evening’s dual. That likely isn’t by accident and could signal Brands’ return, though I’m sure Kennedy would love to compete in his home state. Whoever takes the mat for the Hawkeyes should be considered a clear-cut favorite over Clayton Whiting. Though he’s typically not someone who racks up bonus points, Brands has logged two techs in his three wins this year. It should be noted that Whiting’s former Missouri teammate, Sean Harman, kept Brands in check during a 2-1 win for the Hawkeye. At one point, Harman and Whiting were very competitive with each other for a starting spot. On the other hand, it was Brands’ first match back after a long layoff. Whiting has quietly been on a roll with wins in five of his last six. At this point, I can’t pick him against either option for the Hawkeyes; however, bonus points are probably a tough ask from them. 13-9 Iowa. 184 lbs Once again, Iowa has options here. True freshman Angelo Ferrari has one date remaining to compete while staying in redshirt. Does Tom Brands use it tonight or next week against Oklahoma State? Obviously, having Gabe Arnold available is great too. My guess is they use Arnold tonight and Ferrari against the Cowboys. Arnold suffered his first loss of the season last week to Nebraska’s Silas Allred. Minnesota’s stud freshman Max McEnelly majored Allred and is unbeaten himself. Despite this discrepancy, I do think it will be a close bout. McEnelly has had a pair of overtime wins this season. Those account for his only non-bonus point wins. While McEnelly has been a machine thus far, Arnold has not allowed bonus points in his collegiate career - even to NCAA finalist Dustin Plott, as a true freshman. I don’t think that happens here, but let’s give McEnelly a regular decision. Iowa leads 13-12. 197 lbs We’ve got a key match here at 197 lbs, if indeed, Iowa holds a one-point advantage here. Stephen Buchanan has looked every bit the part of a #1 ranked wrestler this season. In a close dual against Nebraska last Friday, Buchanan blew the match open late and got a fall in the closing seconds. If he gets the opportunity, Buchanan might just put things out of reach before the heavyweight bout. This week, Buchanan will have a different level of opponent in All-American and Big Ten champion Isaiah Salazar. Salazar has suffered three losses this season with the most lopsided coming from Jacob Cardenas, 8-3. Salazar has only given up bonus points three times in his career, twice at the 2024 NCAA Tournament and once as a redshirt freshman. I think with the home crowd behind him, Salazar keeps it relatively close with Buchanan. That means Iowa leads by four heading into heavyweight. 285 lbs Could Gable Steveson script it any better? His team down by four points heading into the final match against Iowa. Is there anyone else you’d rather have in this spot knowing you need a tech fall (or pin) to win? Now, Ben Kueter is a formidable opponent and should be someone seriously challenging for the podium in Philly. Can he limit the damage from Steveson? We saw Nick Feldman hold Gable to a major decision last Friday - is Kueter capable of the same? This is going to be really fun!

Well, here we are. Through 15 weeks of Fantasy Wrestling, hopefully you find yourself in the playoff bracket only two more weeks away from winning the League. A reminder of some important rules: Wrestlers entered at a weight must compete at that weight or else their results will not be counted. Wrestlers in the “Floater” spots can compete at ANY weight and accumulate Fantasy points. A wrestler will LOCK on your roster at 11 am ET on the day of their first competition for the week. (refer to the SHP’s Week Preview) Only results against D1 competition (starters, backups, and redshirts) will count towards Fantasy Points. Check your league settings to know how many add/drops are permitted per week. Have a question, concern, suggestions, or just want to chat about Fantasy Wrestling? The end of the 2024-25 regular season is rapidly approaching! We only have two weekends of competition left before the postseason begins. While “all that matters is March” is definitely a mindset in our sport, there’s plenty to pay attention to over the next two weeks. Particularly, the next four days. Yes, this is a Thursday with some high-quality matchups. What we’re focusing on now are some of the best individual matchups on tap for these next four days. There are plenty more that we’ve omitted (we’re only writing about 16); however, these may have the most significance from a rankings standpoint, or storylines, or in relation to the outcome of their duals. Remember, here’s how to watch each of these matches below. Thursday, February 13th 285 lbs - #19 Gavin Hoffman (Lock Haven) vs. #30 Daniel Bucknavich (Cleveland State) Let’s hope this dual isn’t the last meeting between the twins who coach the teams - Scott Moore at Lock Haven and Josh Moore at Cleveland State. A few weeks ago, we learned that the CSU athletic department intends to drop the Viking program after the 2024-25 season. For the action on the mat, this could be a preview of the MAC finals at heavyweight. Gavin Hoffman has come out of retirement to wrestle 285 lbs for the first time and he’s been very good. A bout with Bucknavich could be one of his toughest tests of the season. 125 lbs - #10 Sheldon Seymour (Lehigh) vs. #24 Max Gallagher (Penn) Something’s gotta give here as both of these lightweights enter Thursday’s match on a nine-match winning streak. Neither has lost since the calendar turned to 2025. Seymour’s only losses this year have come from wrestlers who are ranked in the top seven nationally. Gallagher is a returning national qualifier who was fifth in the EIWA last year. Earlier that season, Gallagher defeated Seymour in sudden victory. 149 lbs - #10 Jaden Abas (Stanford) vs. #12 Ty Whalen (Princeton) After a decent freshman campaign at 157 lbs, Ty Whalen broke out last year going undefeated down a weight and wrestling unattached. That led to high expectations for this season. Whalen has largely met those expectations going 16-1 on the year - even while missing the entire month of December. He’ll have battle-tested veteran Jaden Abas who is looking to get on the All-American stand for the second time in his career. This match could determine who does and who doesn’t get a top-ten seed at nationals. Friday, February 14th 141 lbs - #24 Todd Carter (Gardner-Webb) vs. UR AJ Rallo (Bellarmine) This is a huge match with NCAA implications hanging in the balance. AJ Rallo has just missed the top-33 in our national rankings for the past few weeks. He did come in at #33 in the latest set of Coaches Rankings. Todd Carter is a returning qualifier who has been very good for Gardner-Webb. A win over Carter could put Rallo in line for the top seed in the conference and make his qualifier status less tenuous. 174 lbs - #4 Lorenzo Norman (Stanford) vs. #21 Matthew Singleton (NC State) Quietly, one of the best freshmen in the nation has been Stanford’s Lorenzo Norman, who is now 18-1 with a CKLV finals loss to Dean Hamiti as the only setback of the year. Norman started his ACC campaign with an 8-6 win over Luca Augustine, then posted a pair of tech fall wins in his last two outings. Singleton is trying to get back on the right track after starting his conference slate with two straight losses - one to Augustine in tiebreakers. 141 lbs - #1 Jesse Mendez (Ohio State) vs. #3 Beau Bartlett (Penn State) Returning national champion Jesse Mendez comes into this dual on a 31-match winning streak. His most recent loss? Yes, it came in this dual last year to Beau Bartlett. Of course, Mendez got revenge with close wins in the Big Ten and NCAA finals. Last week, Mendez was pushed into rideouts by Vance Vombaur, does he fall this time to Bartlett? 174 lbs - #2 Levi Haines (Penn State) vs. #5 Carson Kharchla (Ohio State) Carson Kharchla missed almost a full year due to injuries, but he returned to the Buckeye lineup and has been excellent with 11 straight wins. He’ll have his toughest test, to date, with returning national champion Levi Haines. Haines has been nearly perfect with a sudden victory loss to two-time champion Keegan O’Toole as the only blemish on his 2024-25 record. 157 lbs - #6 Ethen Miller (Maryland) vs. #7 Joey Blaze (Purdue) This is a matchup with huge B1G seeding implications. Should Miller get the win, he’d finish the conference slate unbeaten and be in line to receive the top seed. That could put Tyler Kasak, Jacori Teemer, and Antrell Taylor all on one side of the bracket. First, Miller will have to get by Joey Blaze for the second time this season. The first saw Miller take an exciting 11-9 victory at the TigerStyle Invite. 197 lbs - #10 Mac Stout (Pittsburgh) vs. #12 Andy Smith (Virginia Tech) We’ve got a pair of ACC foes that have been headed in opposite directions in the rankings. Mac Stout is a winner of his last 16 matches, a streak that saw him take a Midlands title. Andy Smith has lost two of his last four and was pushed to the brink in his two wins. These two did not meet each other last season, so there’s no past history to go on. 157 lbs - #11 Cody Chittum (Iowa State) vs. #19 Cobe Siebrecht (South Dakota State) It’s kind of hard to project this dual as Iowa State has been hammered with injuries and South Dakota State has had some themselves. If the best version of each team’s lineup is available, it could be a good one. For Iowa State, Cody Chittum was rounding into shape before an injury in late-January. Cobe Siebrecht missed about a month and a half’s worth of action but returned with five straight wins. 157 lbs - #3 Jacori Teemer (Iowa) vs. #8 Tommy Askey (Minnesota) For Minnesota to pull the upset on Iowa, they’ll probably need to win 157 lbs. There’s the chance that Jacori Teemer doesn’t wrestle again, but even if he does, who knows if he’ll be close to 100%. He and Tommy Askey clashed way back during the 2021-22 season and Teemer rolled to a 14-5 major decision. I’m not sure how relevant that match is at this time. 184 lbs - #4 Max McEnelly (Minnesota) vs. #8 Gabe Arnold (Iowa) Before the season, if you picked a Big Ten 184 lb freshman to jump into contender status, I assume many people would have tabbed Gabe Arnold as that guy. He certainly could be - Arnold just lost his first match in an Iowa singlet on Friday. But the “other” guy is Max McEnelly who was perfect while redshirting for Minnesota and has yet to lose in 2024-25 for the Gophers. Using the dreaded common opponents between these two, McEnelly majored Silas Allred, who is responsible for Arnold’s lone loss. 133 lbs - #2 Zeth Romney (Cal Poly) vs. #9 Nasir Bailey (Little Rock) One of the breakout performers from the CKLV was Zeth Romney who took the title with a win over All-American Evan Frost in the finals and three other national qualifiers along the way. Romney has competed sporadically since then, but he did pop up at the National Duals and pinned 2024 All-American Nasir Bailey. That was a reversal from the 2023-24 dual meet - won by Bailey, 7-1. A win by Bailey puts him back in the national title conversation in a wide-open 133 lb bracket. 133 lbs - #4 Lucas Byrd (Illinois) vs. #8 Braeden Davis (Penn State) Braeden Davis hasn’t competed since a January 24th loss to Dylan Shawver, but is the lone Penn State 133 lber listed on their media release this week (for whatever that’s worth). Should he return on Sunday, it would be against a formidable opponent in two-time All-American Lucas Byrd. Byrd’s only loss of the year came via a close decision to Iowa’s Drake Ayala. I’d expect this to be a low-scoring tactical bout. 125 lbs - #20 Marc-Anthony McGowan (Princeton) vs. #24 Max Gallagher (Penn) Marc-Anthony McGowan was one of the top prospects in the high school Class of 2023, but missed all of last year with an injury. He’s been back and as good as expected. In McGowan’s first collegiate outing, he finished fifth at the Midlands and defeated Max Gallagher 10-7 in his final match. Now they’ll clash again, likely for the top spot in the inaugural Ivy League tournament. 197 lbs - #2 AJ Ferrari (CSU Bakersfield) vs. #7 Stephen Little (Little Rock) When AJ Ferrari to CSU Bakersfield was finalized, this was one of the matches I was looking forward to most. Ferrari is obviously a physical specimen, but Little is a strong handfighter and difficult to get out of position. Something has to give! This will also mark Ferarri’s first match this year against a top-ten opponent. Nothing we’ve seen would lead you to believe he can’t handle that level of competition anymore, but you have to see it to pick him in this tough weight class.

On Thursday morning, the NCAA released its first set of RPI rankings. RPI will play a part in the number of automatic allocations each conference gets at each weight, along with at-large berths, and NCAA seeding. The RPI is a calculation that consists of three factors: winning percentage, opponent winning percentage (strength of schedule) and opponent’s opponent winning percentage (opponent’s strength of schedule). Only matches against Division I opponents at the designated weight class count towards the RPI and a wrestler needs to have wrestled 15 matches to be ranked. The rankings are as follows: 125 133 141 149 157 165 174 184 197 285

On Thursday morning, the NCAA released its second set of DI coaches rankings. The final rankings will play a part in the number of automatic allocations each conference gets at each weight, along with at-large berths, and NCAA seeding. To be noted in the rankings, a wrestler must have been designated as a starter by their head coach. They also must compete in at least 8 DI matches at their rankable weight and must have competed once in the last 30 days. The rankings are as follows: 125 133 141 149 157 165 174 184 197 285

Only two weeks remain in the regular season, while this week is the start of the Postseason tourney for Fantasy Team Managers. For these standings, we will be using the Basic Fantasy Scoring through @WrestleStat (Win by Dec +3, Loss by Dec -3, Win by Pin +6, Loss by Pin -6, etc). Only results against D1 competition (starters, backups, and redshirts) will count towards Fantasy Points. Standings are first ordered based on total Fpts, then if tied by Points Per Match (PPM). Week 15 Notes: A few wrestlers top the Week 15 list after a successful run through the lightly-publicized Greyhound Open. Derek Gilcher is the #1 wrestler of Week 15 with four countable matches (out of five wrestled) for a total of 17 Fpts. SIUE backup Eric Almarinez came in second with 13 Fpts at the same tournament, and Penn State’s Ty Watson had his name show up on the 157 Messiah Open bracket eight times, with only five being countable matches (two MFF and one non-D1 opponent). The remaining Week 15 standings are filled with two match winners, not really separated by much at all. The overall standings had little movement, with Wyatt Hendrickson entering the Top-3 with his most recent win by tech, helped by Peyton Hall only netting two Fpts from his two matches on the week. Jesse Mendez remains at the top and is the first wrestler of the season to break the 100 Fpt mark. In second, Matt Ramos is eight points behind Mendez, with a match in-hand. This could come down to the last week, as in, if Ramos wins out (with bonus) and Mendez loses to Bartlett this week, we could see a race to the finish.
