Gabriel Gonzalez defeated Dominic Balmer 5-1 at heavyweight to conclude the dual. "We had better effort today," said CSUB head coach Manny Rivera. LEXINGTON, Va. -- The 23rd-ranked Pitt wrestling team improved to 8-3 on the season after taking nine of 10 bouts from VMI Saturday afternoon in Cormack Hall. “It was great to see our guys respond after a loss with solid performances today,†said acting co-head coach Drew Headlee. “We pressed the offense the entire dual and were able to put up a large number of points on the board.†Of the nine victories, four Panthers were able to earn wins with bonus points including two pins and two technical falls. Sophomore LJ Bentley got things going at 125 pounds, using a first period takedown to hold off VMI senior Dalton Henderson, 2-1, who entered the dual 17-7 overall. Starting on bottom entering the second frame, Dalton escaped, but neither wrestler would be able to score again. Sophomore Robert Lee used Bentley's momentum at 141 pounds to earn his seventh pin of the season in 1:07. Lee took down John Reed just a few seconds into the bout and never looked back, boosting the Panthers to a 9-6 lead. At 149 pounds, redshirt freshman Alex Murray outlasted Stevan Smith, 11-4, after jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first period. Murray added on two more points in the second after taking down Smith early on and would ride him out for the remainder of the period. With the bout in his favor, 6-1, Murray started the third on bottom and quickly escaped. Murray would escape and take down Smith once more to secure the win with riding time. Redshirt freshman Taleb Rahmani extended Pitt's lead to 17-6 after picking up a 19-1 technical fall in 4:39 over Dolan Walsh. Rahmani racked up 12 points in the first period and a takedown and four point nearfall would lock up his 15th win of the season. Ranked 12th in the country by InterMat this week at 165 pounds, sophomore TeShan Campbell recorded his eighth technical fall of the season and has won his past five matches by technical fall. Campbell dominated Cade Kiely, 21-6, which included seven takedowns and extended Pitt's lead to 22-6. At 174 pounds, freshman Christian Dietrich held off Shabaka Johns, 7-3. Dietrich struck first in the opening frame jumping to an early 2-0 lead. The two started in neutral to open the second and Dietrich took Johns down again. Dietrich tacked on three more points in the third by way of escape and riding time to secure the win. Feeding off of the Panthers' momentum, sophomore Donovan McAfee turned in a 3-2 decision over Chris Beck, extending Pitt's lead to 28-6. After a scoreless first period, McAfee escaped to start the second and took down Beck in the third for the win. Senior John Rizzo also picked up a win by decision as he defeated Taylor Thomas, 7-4. Rizzo scored the first takedown in the opening frame and escaped and scored a takedown in the second giving him a 5-0 lead entering the final period. Thomas was ready for Rizzo in the third as he took him down twice, but Rizzo would escape each time to lock up the win. In the final bout of the day, redshirt junior Ryan Solomon jumped to an early 8-0 lead in the first thanks to a takedown and recording six nearfall points. Soon after, Solomon pinned Thomas Shea-Roop in 1:17 giving the Panthers a 37-6 victory. Pitt resumes action Saturday, Jan. 28 as it hosts ACC foe North Carolina. CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Drew Phipps, Tom Sleigh and Tyler Greene won three consecutive bouts to conclude the match and help Bucknell overcome a late 16-12 deficit to defeat Harvard 24-16 Saturday afternoon. It was the second straight win for the Bison, who improved to 4-4, 2-1 EIWA on the year. The Crimson fell to 1-4, 1-1 EIWA. Bucknell trailed 16-12 entering the 184-pound bout and Phipps, a freshman, came through with a 3-2 decision. It was his 12th victory of the year and brought the Bison to within one at 16-15. Sleigh followed with his 11th consecutive victory by pinning Rico Stormer at 197. That gave Bucknell the lead for good. Entering the final bout of the day, the Bison held a 21-16 advantage, meaning Harvard could still tie the score with a win by tech fall or claim the victory with a fall. Bonus points were key for the Bison, who won six of the 10 bouts in the match. ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES The Black Knights improved to 8-12-1 against Hofstra after winning for the second-straight season. Army is now on a four-match winning streak, the longest since a five-match stretch in 2013-14. Sophomore Austin Harry notched his 10th win of the season to set a new single-season personal best. Freshman lightweight Trey Chalifoux earned the second bonus-point victory of his career with a 12-4 major decision over Jacob Martin to even his season record at 9-9. Senior Samson Imonode took a 17-7 major decision for his fifth bonus point win of the season, tying from personal best from 2013-14 and 2015-16. Imonode is now 7-1 on the season and has 10-career dual victories. Senior heavyweight Trevor Smith improved to 13-8 on the season, setting a new single-season high. KEY MOMENT Senior co-captain Russ Parsons pinned his opponent, Jake Kaminsky, 2:19 into the match to extend Army's lead to 9-0. But, I thought even in the matches we won that they outfought us which is concerning. We let guys back into matches when we could have put them away. The matches didn't need to be that close. We have to be tougher than that. It's going to take more fight than we showed today if we want to be the team we say we want to be. It was good to win nine of 10 matches, no question, but we need to be more dominant." UP NEXT The Black Knights are back in action tomorrow for a 1 p.m. dual at Binghamton. -
Realbuto, Dean get pins to help propel Cornell to win over Lehigh
InterMat Staff posted an article in College
BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Consecutive pins by seniors Brian Realbuto and Gabe Dean allowed Cornell to rally from a 17-3 halftime deficit for a 21-20 victory over No. 7 Lehigh on Saturday afternoon at Leeman-Turner Arena. The Big Red improved to 6-2 on the season, while its EIWA rival fell to 8-2. Cornell dominated the second half of the dual, winning the first four matches, including a neutral fall for fourth-ranked Realbuto against sixth-ranked Ryan Preisch. The senior had Preisch in a dangerous position during a scramble and the Mountain Hawk's shoulders squared off for the fall. Moments later, Dean stuck his 14th opponent in 20 starts, thoroughly dominating against Andrew Price before putting him away 22 seconds into the second period. That win gave the Big Red its first lead at 18-17. Ben Honis used an escape and a stalling point on Ben Haas to win at 197 to extend the team lead to 21-17 before Sweany was taken down in sudden victory by 18th-ranked Doug Vollaro. The result wasn't enough for the home team in front of a sold-out crowd. Cornell's lone win in the first half of the match was Mark Grey's 6-4 win over Joe Lobeck at 133, though Will Koll gave 11th-ranked Randy Cruz all he could handle in a 1-0 loss at 141. The win avenged Lehigh's 25-13 win over the Big Red last season in Ithaca to end a 47-match win streak against EIWA opponents. The Mountain Hawks lead the all-time series 60-32-3, though Cornell is 6-1 over the last seven meetings. The two teams have combined to win 17 of the last 18 EIWA titles, with the last 10 going to Cornell. The Big Red returns home to face Lock Haven on Sunday, Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. at the Friedman Wrestling Center. PHILADELPHIA -- On a day where the University of Pennsylvania wrestling and gymnastics teams were both competing at The Palestra, the grapplers sent Lock Haven tumbling in a 25-14 win. The Red and Blue won six bouts, netting bonus points in five of them, to defeat the Bald Eagles. Once again, the middle weights came through for the Red and Blue, with bonus points at 141, 157, 165, 174 and 184. The dual started at 149 pounds and the Quakers found themselves in their only deficit of the afternoon following a last-second win for the Bald Eagles. Penn's Joe Oliva led, 5-2, late against Kyle Shoop but a headlock takedown and four backpoints in the final moments gave Lock Haven a brief feeling of confidence and a 3-0 lead. May Bethea did not let Lock Haven linger in the bout, scoring a technical fall over Jon Ross. Bethea actually trailed in the bout after conceding the first takedown. However, he would score 18 of the next 19 points in the match, finally securing the tech fall with back points at 6:05 for an 18-3 win. Brooks Martino again needed a comeback of sorts to put bonus points on the board for his team at 165 pounds. Despite initiating most of the action in the first period, Martino found himself trailing, 2-1, after one period. In the second, he finally finished on a shot, tacking on four nearfall in the process. In the third, an escape and takedown locked up a 10-2 major decision. No. 10 Casey Kent was back to his dominant self to the tune of a 15-0 technical fall over Adam Mackie. Kent scored a takedown in the first period and loaded up three sets of nearfall for a 12-0 lead after one before a takedown at 3:52 finished off the shutout. Joe Heyob would make it two consecutive blankings for the Red and Blue with a 9-0 major decision at 184 over Gavin Caprio. Heyob had a takedown in each period on his way to giving Penn an 18-3 lead at halftime. Out of the break, No. 15 Frank Mattiace continued the momentum with a gutty 3-2 decision over Tristan Sponseller. Mattiace finished a takedown on the edge in the final 20 seconds for the winning score. The Bald Eagles would take the next three bouts, but did not muster enough bonus points to sneak back into the match. No. 16 Thomas Haines had three takedowns and four back points on his way to an 11-0 major decision over Tyler Hall. At 125 pounds, Jake Field won by decision, 9-3, over Jeremy Schwartz but Penn's lead would stand at 11 with two matches remaining. Lock Haven needed a technical fall at 133, but only scored a major decision via a 16-3 win from DJ Feldman over Tristin DeVincenzo. A.J. Vindici would render Lock Haven's comeback moot with a major decision of his own to close the dual. A takedown and four nearfall in the third period gave Vindici an 11-3 win over Lewis Williams. Freshman Logan Massa of Michigan is currently ranked No. 2 at 165 pounds (Photo/Tony Rotundo, WrestlersAreWarriors.com) No. 13 Michigan will look to get back on track on Sunday against Northwestern after suffering a 34-6 setback at No. 15 Illinois on Friday night. Sunday's dual meet is slated for 2 p.m. CT in Evanston (Ill.), and will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network, as well as streamed live on BTN2Go. The unranked Wildcats have a 6-3 dual meet mark. Below are five matchups to watch in the dual meet. 141: Alec McKenna (Northwestern) vs. Sal Profaci (Michigan) This is a battle between two freshmen trying to find their way in Division I wrestling. Profaci, a two-time New Jersey state placewinner, was one of only two Wolverines to pick up a victory on Friday night at Illinois. He has had a solid start to his redshirt freshman season, compiling a record of 10-7, which includes a victory over NCAA qualifier Mike Longo of Oklahoma. McKenna picked up his first Big Ten win against Purdue on Jan. 8, but has gone 1-4 over his last five matches, and currently sports a 7-9 record. 149: Shayne Oster (Northwestern) vs. Zac Hall (Michigan) Hall, a four-time Michigan state champion, took over the starting spot at 149 pounds after the Wolverines announced that Alec Pantaleo would be redshirting. He has had an up-and-down season. He started the season by winning 7 of his first 9 matches, but has since gone just 2-5. Hall is coming off a bad loss (8-0) to Eric Barone of Illinois. Oster, an Illinois state champion, began his season with five straight wins. He went 1-2 at the Midlands Championships, but bounced back with a dominant 12-2 victory over Michigan State's Nick Trimble last weekend. 165: Johnny Sebastian (Northwestern) vs. No. 2 Logan Massa (Michigan) Massa has lived up to his billing and more as one of the nation's top recruits coming out of high school. The redshirt freshman has climbed to No. 2 in the rankings after starting the season 18-0. He suffered his first defeat on Friday night at the hands of two-time NCAA champion Isaiah Martinez of Illinois, 3-1. Sebastian was a three-time New Jersey state champion and the nation's No. 14 recruit by InterMat as a senior. After a strong redshirt season in 2014-15, Sebastian missed all of last season after having surgery in November. He started this season 7-0, but has been up-and-down since, and comes into the match against Massa with a record of 13-5. 184: Mitch Sliga (Northwestern) vs. Ernest Battaglia (Michigan) Sliga has been one of Northwestern's top wrestlers this season. He has a record of 14-4 and was ranked by InterMat earlier this season. All of his losses have come to ranked wrestlers or All-Americans. He has started 2017 with two Big Ten wins. Battaglia took over the starting spot for the Wolverines after the decision was made to redshirt three-time NCAA qualifier Domenic Abounader. He picked up a win last weekend against Maryland, but has been pinned in each of his last two outings. 197: Jacob Berkowitz (Northwestern) vs. Jackson Striggow (Michigan) Berkowitz has been a pleasant surprise this season. After a disappointing junior season in which he went 4-14, Berkowitz has gone 18-5 this season. He placed at the Midlands Championships, and has won his first two matches of 2017. Striggow, a Minnesota state champion, is coming off a 3-1 victory over Andre Lee of Illinois on Friday night. His most notable win this season came over Oregon State's Corey Griego, a returning NCAA qualifier who is currently ranked No. 18.

Chance Marsteller coaching a wrestler from Kennard-Dale Chance Marsteller, four-time Pennsylvania high school state wrestling champ who had competed at Oklahoma State and Lock Haven University, pled guilty to charges Thursday from an incident last summer, then announced plans to return to classes at LHU next week, according to multiple media reports. Marsteller entered guilty pleas on six criminal counts of simple assault and one count of open lewdness in Pennsylvania's Clinton County Court for a violent episode in August 2016. In addition, Marsteller's attorney, Ryan C. Gardner, said Thursday that his client has been accepted for enrollment at Lock Haven, and will return on Monday as a student. Marsteller said he has been in touch with the school's wrestling program, and hopes to rejoin the team in the 2017-18 academic year. The 21-year-old wrestler offered his guilty plea this week just as jury selection was to begin. He will be sentenced Feb. 13. Gardner said his client was presented with a plea agreement from Clinton County District Attorney David Strouse that would include seven years of court supervision and an intensive probationary period. That period would include Marsteller reporting to the district probation department twice a week as well as drug and alcohol rehabilitation and counseling. The judge may also add a community service requirement. "My effort in fashioning this plea offer was to give Marsteller the opportunity to succeed in a structured environment but also to make sure he is held accountable every single step of the way," Strouse told PennLive.com Friday. Marsteller will present this plea agreement to the judge at his sentencing hearing next month. If the judge does not accept the agreement, Marsteller will have the opportunity to withdraw his plea and go to trial. The judge indicated if he accepts the agreement, terms of probation could include a curfew. On August 25, 2016, Chandler S. Marsteller was arrested for biting and spitting at police officers after he was banging on doors in a Lock Haven apartment complex while wearing only a towel. The original charges included six counts of aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, disorderly conduct/fighting, six counts of recklessly endangering another, six counts of simple assault and one count of open lewdness, according to court documents. The same documents indicated that Marsteller had a blood alcohol content that was more than three times the legal limit and had marijuana and cocaine in his system when he was arrested. Marsteller was dismissed from the Lock Haven wrestling team as a result of the allegations. Marsteller has told the court that he has been clean since his arrest. He checked himself into an in-patient drug and alcohol treatment facility and followed that up with two months of out-patient treatment. Since returning home, Marsteller also has been a volunteer assistant coach with the Kennard-Dale junior high school wrestling team and said he plans to return to coach the team in a tournament later this winter. Gardner said he was hopeful Marsteller's work as a volunteer assistant would contribute to his community service requirements. When asked what can be accomplished by Marsteller returning to Lock Haven, Gardner said: "I think it's part of his recovery….A chance to show everyone why he went there and what he looked to accomplish initially." A four-time PIAA (Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association) wrestling champ, Chance Marsteller compiled a perfect 166-0 record at Kennard-Dale High School. The highly-recruited wrestler had originally committed to Penn State before switching to Oklahoma State. However, Marsteller struggled in his second year with the Cowboys, and was suspended in January 2016 by head coach John Smith for an undisclosed violation of team rules. Marsteller later announced his plans to return to Pennsylvania to wrestle at Lock Haven.

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The No. 14 Sun Devils made a statement with an early pin and put an exclamation point on a 31-9 victory with a close match late, marking their first-ever victory vs. North Carolina in Tempe. The win also improved ASU to 4-0-1 all-time vs. the Tar Heels. "Overall, the first thing is always the result. We're just trying to get our hand raised," said head coach Zeke Jones. "I think we did that collectively as a team. When you're in a close battle, you have to do all the small things right and I also think it comes down to mental toughness and who wants it more. I do think the close matches, the one and two-point bouts, we won them all." Jacen Petersen recorded his first pin of the season to give the Sun Devils an early 6-0 lead before UNC's Danny Chaid won one of just two of the Tar Heels' bouts of the evening on a major decision. Tanner Hall, Josh Kramer, and Ted Rico tallied a trio of decisions, the second two by just a single point, before Joey Ward brought North Carolina within six, 15-9, on their final win of the night. Josh Maruca posted his first career major decision victory to give the Devils a 10-point lead, 19-9, before Josh Shields increased the margin with a 7-5 decision. Anthony Valencia pinned Jack Clark for ASU's second pin of the match and his eighth straight bonus point victory. In a bout determined by riding time, Zahid Valencia remained undefeated (26-0) with a 2-1 decision over Ethan Ramos, his second victory over Ramos this season after a 11-10 decision at November's Journeymen Classic. At halftime, a number of current and former MMA stars from all decades were honored, many of which were former Sun Devils, including Cain Velasquez, Ryan Bader, Townsend Saunders, and Thom Ortiz. "The history of MMA fighting really came right out of here, out of Phoenix. Dan 'The Beast' Severn, Don Frye, they were the original, first UFC fighters, the first few. And then you see a trail of Arizona State wrestlers that can either decide to become world and Olympic champions or UFC champions." The program prides itself on its successful and prominent alumni, including Velasquez and Bader, who often visit and impart wisdom to the current Sun Devils. "They're alumni and they come to the wrestling room all the time. The kids on our team get to hear from them and aspire to be like them. EDMOND -- No. 9 Central Oklahoma upset No. 2 Nebraska-Kearney 22-16 Friday night in Hamilton Field House in MIAA action to improve to 13-0 on the season and extend the school's second-longest win streak to 20 duals. The Bronchos, now 2-0 in MIAA duals, jumped out to an early edge with victories in the first three matches. Zac D'Amico edges Vlad Kazakov 3-2 at 125 pounds, Blake Dauphin beat the second-ranked 133 pound wrestler in the country, Bryce Shoemaker, 5-2, and Joshua Ailey earned a major decision over sixth-ranked 141-pounder Jacob Wasser 11-1 to put the Bornchos ahead 10-0 after three weights. Nebraska-Kearney (13-5, 2-1) came into the match with six nationally-ranked wrestlers. The Bronchos beat three of them Friday night. "That was a great match for our guys," UCO head coach Todd Steidley said. "I'm really proud of the way our guys fought tonight. This will be good for them to see that they can wrestle with anybody." Kearney earned a major decision of its own at 149 pounds and another decision at 157 to make it 10-7. The teams broke for their locker rooms as Central Oklahoma held an intermission to honor the 26 wrestlers, and the 1979 national championship team, who are in the UCO Hall of Fame. Returning from the break, Dakota Head put UCO back in the driver seat. Head made his season debut last week in Kearney, Neb. At the Midwest Duals. He went 3-0 there, and won Friday too, an 8-3 decision that put the Bronchos up 13-7. At 174 pounds, Miguel Barreras earned a signature victory on an outstanding season. The redshirt freshman beat sixth-ranked Calvin Ochs 7-4. Barreras leads the Bronchos with 28 wins this season. Kearney got a few points back with a decision at 184 pounds, but the Bronchos were quick to rebound. Greg Wilson, the fourth-ranked 197-pounder in the country, pinned Trey Schlender in just 1:33 to put UCO up 22-10 and secure the upset. The Bronchos return to the mat on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., hosting Adams State in Hamilton Field House. UCO also hosts Colorado State-Pueblo on Monday at 7 p.m. Results: 125: Zac D'Amico, UCO, dec. San Luis Obispo, Calif. -- Three bonus point wins helped the University of Wyoming wrestling team to a convincing 32-3 win over Cal Poly on Friday night. The dominating performance proved to be the sixth-straight win for UW (3-5, 1-1 Big 12) over the Mustangs. “My mindset was that we needed to wrestle our best to win,†UW head coach Mark Branch said. “As much as we may have been struggling this year, I think we all felt a little better as the dual went on. It was huge for Gunnar (Woodburn) to come out right away against a solid competitor and set the tone. The first couple of wins were important for how the rest of the team did and the consistency of doing things better showed tonight.†The Pokes were bolstered by wins in nine of the ten matches, starting with senior Gunnar Woodburn's 8-3 decision at 133 to open the dual. Woodburn lead the entire match and ultimately used a four-point near fall in the final period to help secure the win. Junior All-American Bryce Meredith earned a 5-2 decision over Colton Schilling to give UW a 6-0 lead after two matches. Senior Cole Mendenhall wasted no time in earning a pin (1:44) over Josh Cortez. It was the eighth fall for Mendenhall this season. In the feature match of the night, Archie Colgan jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the first period using a takedown and four-point near fall. He ultimately won by a 6-4 decision over No. 20 Colt Shorts for what was his third win against a ranked opponent this year. Branson Ashworth recorded his seventh major decision on Friday night. With the help of a quick start, Ashworth won 12-1 over Luke Wilson to further strengthen UW's lead halfway through the dual. UW held strong 19-0 after the first five matches. Kyle Pope picked up the sixth-straight win for Wyoming to open the dual with an 8-4 decision over Xavier Johnson. Although down early in the match, Pope used three total takedowns to earn the victory for the Brown and Gold. Senior Nate Shaw recorded his first dual victory of the season with an 8-4 win of J.T. Goodwin. Shaw also scored three takedowns in addition to a couple escapes during the match. Senior Brandon Tribble held on for a 6-4 decision over Spencer Empey. He used two takedowns in the final period to secure the win. To close out the dual, senior Drew Templeman took control of the match early. Templeman recorded a 14-0 major to give UW its ninth win of the dual. “We know we have to continue to improve,†Branch added. “Among the others, Brandon (Tribble) and Nate (Shaw) each were solid for us tonight, which was great to see. It is always a better feeling to leave with a win, but the hard work and positive habits need to continue. We can't let our guard down as the season goes on.†Wyoming will return to the mat on Jan. 28 at Utah Valley. The dual is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. MT. Results: 133: Gunnar Woodburn dec. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- No. 15 Fighting Illini wrestling won eight of the ten matches to defeat No. 13 Michigan, 34-6, on Friday (1/20) evening at Huff Hall. No. 6 Zane Richards, Kyle Langenderfer, No. 1 Isaiah Martinez, and No. 12 Zac Brunson each earned victories over ranked opponents, while No. 13 Emery Parker and Brooks Black added in pins to pad the victory. The win improves Illinois' dual record to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten. It's the program's largest win over a ranked opponent since beating No. 21 Virginia 39-7 as part of the ACC/Big Ten Clash on November 15, 2008. "It's probably the best they've wrestled as a group all year for sure," said Head Coach Jim Heffernan. "The score probably wasn't as indicative, as how close as a lot of the matches were. We won the close matches. We won the [ranked] matchups, two guys are ranked pretty high, and that makes a big difference. We knew it was going to be a very competitive meet, with a lot of competitive matches, but I think our guys had a lot of energy and emotion and looked pretty good." Leading 13-3 after four bouts, the Illini middleweights served the decisive blow with a sweep of three ranked Michigan wrestlers, putting the dual out of reach. 157-pounder Kyle Langenderfer started it off with a 2-1 decision in tiebreaker one against No. 9 Brian Murphy. The two wrestlers traded escapes, Langenderfer (15-4) in the second and Murphy in the third, forcing sudden victory. After a scoreless 1-minute overtime period, the Illini senior rode out Murphy to enter the third period needing just an escape to win the match. Midway through the second 30-second period, Langenderfer got the escape to upset Murphy. "Tonight was definitely a big turning point, especially with this being an in-state rival," Langenderfer said about the win. "This is a kid I wrestled in high school for a state championship, so there's a little blood there to start." After going 2-2 at Midlands, Langenderfer has bounced back to start off Big Ten season with three victories. "Just coming off midlands, my weight wasn't right and I was doing things my own way, it really wasn't working out for me, Langenderfer explained. "The coaches and I kind of regrouped after midlands, got the weight under control and started working on the finer things, the little details. It's starting to come through which is nice." Martinez continued the momentum in the much-anticipated matchup against second-ranked, and undefeated, Logan Massa. Martinez (16-0) grabbed a takedown with under a minute to go in the first period. Massa earned an escape in period two, but was unable to get any closer as the two-time NCAA champion maintained his perfect record to start the season. "I was just excited to come in," said Martinez of the matchup. "You've got to be happy when there's a big match, No. 1 versus No. 2, and this is my third year doing it. "It's my third year being No. 1; that's why I love this sport so much, just because of the challenges. [Massa] is a freshman; he's the No. 2 wrestler in the country and that's why I love what I do. Going in to the match, I knew he was good so I tried to be focused and just control the pace and the position." In the third consecutive tight match of the dual, Zac Brunson defeated No. 8 Myles Amine, 3-2, to clinch the dual victory for the Illini. Like Martinez, Brunson (21-3) earned an early takedown in the opening period and used a third-period escape to win the match. The victory marked the 96th of Brunson's career, moving him into a tie with Nate Patrick for 25th on Illinois' all-time list. In addition to the three hard-fought victories that sealed the match, No. 6 Zane Richards bounced back from a tough loss last week to set the tone for the Illini with a 7-4 decision over No. 4 Steven Micic. Richards (15-2) opened the scoring with a takedown in the opening minute of the period, but a takedown by Micic in the second period leveled the score, 3-3, entering the final period. After an escape by the Illini senior to start the period, the senior added a second takedown and a point for riding time to ice the victory. Richards' victory moves him into sole possession of 24th place on Illinois' all-time wins list with 97 wins, passing Carl Perry (96). Three Illini picked up the full six points for the Orange and Blue on Friday night to pad the victory, beginning with a Michigan forfeit at 125 pounds. Emery Parker (19-4) and Brooks Black (6-3) put an exclamation point on the victory with pins at 184 pounds and heavyweight, respectively. Parker's pin of Ernest Battaglia (0:37) was his fourth, and fastest, pin of the season, while Black returned after missing the first three Big Ten duals to pin Kostya Golobokov in 0:36. The Fighting Illini are back in action at Huff Hall on Sunday, January 22 when they dual Northern Illinois at 1 p.m. The match will be 'Honor and Serve' day as we recognize those who have served our country. Illinois starters will toss out special camo t-shirts prior to the match. Illini Notes: Illinois' 28-point victory is the largest victory over a ranked opponent since the Illini beat #21 Virginia 39-7 on November 15, 2008 as part of the ACC/Big Ten Clash. It's the largest win over Michigan in program history. Zac Brunson's victory marks the 96th of his career, moving him into a tie with Nat Patrick for 25th on Illinois' career win list. Zane Richards moved into sole possession of 24th place tonight with his 97th career victory, passing Carl Perry (96). Martinez improves to 4-0 against ranked opponents this season and 27-1 against ranked foes in his Illinois career. Parker's 0:37 pin of Ernest Battaglia is the fastest pin of his Illinois career and his fourth this season. Brooks Black recorded his second pin of the season. 1,338 fans attended tonight's dual against Michigan. DeKALB, Ill. -- The Northern Illinois University wrestling team defeated Eastern Michigan after a hard-fought dual on Friday night at Victor E. Court in DeKalb, Ill. The Huskies (5-4, 1-3 MAC) won their first Mid-American Conference dual with a 22-14 victory over the Eagles (5-4, 1-3 MAC) after recording wins in six of the 10 weight classes. The meet opened at 157-pounds with Caden McWhirter (Prattville, Ala./Prattville) and Eastern Michigan's Zac Carson. McWhirter started off strong with an early takedown and four nearfall points; however, Carson came back to tie the score at the end of the second period. After a tough bout, Carson had a late takedown to secure the win, 12-8. The Huskies earned their first victory at 174-pounds, when Trace Engelkes (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago) shut out his opponent, 5-0. Engelkes led the first period, 2-0, and was awarded stalling points on two separate occasions before capping off the dual with riding time for the win. Engelkes improves to 11-2 on the season. Following suit, Bryce Gorman (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) picked up another win for the Huskies in a narrow 4-3 decision. With the score tied 3-3 at the end of the second period, Gorman got an escape and his hand was raised in victory. At 197-pounds, No. 9 Shawn Scott (Holly, Mich./Holly) survived a low-scoring battle, coming out on top in a 2-0 decision. Northern Illinois led 9-6 going into intermission. Perhaps the most exciting dual of the night came at 125-pounds with Kirk Johansen (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard North) and No. 18 Noah Gosner. Johansen took the early lead with a takedown and two nearfall points. The score was 4-3 and with the help of the crowd, Johansen took control and pinned his nationally-ranked opponent in 3 minutes and 31 seconds. That is Johansen's first fall of the season and third in his career as a Huskie. Head wrestling coach Ryan Ludwig was impressed with how Johansen stepped up and was able to focus on getting points on the board for the team. "That was a huge win for Johansen," said Ludwig. "We needed someone to step up and he answered the call. Right before the match, I went up and told him to believe in his attacks and do what he does and trust his technique and that's exactly what he did. He went out with a lot of fight, a lot of gas, and he got the job done for us in a big way." At 133, Alijah Jeffery (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) held a steady lead throughout his dual against the Eagles' Sa'Derian Perry and notched a win with a major decision, 11-2. No. 13 Steve Bleise (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) capped off the night with a 6-3 win over Nick Barber, contributing three more team points for the Huskies. Coach Ludwig was pleased with tonight's win but is already looking ahead to Sunday's dual against the Big Ten's Illinois. "We need to convert almost every time," said Ludwig. "We need to make sure we have the energy to go out and get to our attacks first. We did a much better job at that tonight and that's why we got the results that we did." The Huskies will head to Champaign, Ill. on Sunday, Jan. 22 to take on the Fighting Illini at Huff Hall starting at 1 p.m. You can follow the Huskies at fightingillini.com or get up-to-date results from both trackwrestling.com or @NIUWrestling on Twitter. VESTAL, N.Y. -- The Binghamton Wrestling team took down Drexel 22-12 Friday night in the West Gym. In true comeback fashion, the Bearcats won six out of the seven final bouts to secure the dual. After dropping their first three matches, redshirt senior Dylan Caruana put the Bearcats on the board with a 2-0 decision win over David Pearce. Experiencing a "deja vu" like moment, head coach Matt Dernlan recalled a similar start against the Dragons last season. "I was half joking with the guys saying we know the recipe to beat them is to spot them the first three matches," Dernlan said. "This is the exact same thing that happened last year. We gave up the first three matches right out of the gate and then found a way to come back." Following that recipe, redshirt freshman Tristan Rifanburg entered his match at 157 with BU still down 12-3. In the first period, Rifanburg earned a quick takedown and four points by near fall. Up 6-0 going into the second period, Rifanburg tacked on another 10 back points to win by tech fall 4:11 into the match. Stepping up next for BU, redshirt freshman Jake Einbinder continued the comeback, securing another tech fall 2:51 into his match against Dakota Greene. In that time, the 165-pounder accumulated his points for a 17-0 win with a takedown, 14 points by near fall and an extra point for ride time. In their combined efforts, the back-to-back wins put Binghamton up 13-12 to take their first lead of the night. Using that momentum, the Bearcats went on to take the next three bouts to clinch the dual. Redshirt sophomore Anthony DePrez took a hard-earned 3-1 decision win after being down 1-0 in the second period, while junior Steve Schneider recorded four takedowns in a 10-3 match win. Schneider is ranked at No. 11 in the first NCAA coaches' panel released this morning. Redshirt sophomore Mark Tracy earned BU their final win of the night with an 8-3 decision over Joshua Murphy. Tied at two entering the third period, Tracy racked up three takedowns to finish the match. Murphy is currently ranked No. 33 at 197 by the NCAA coaches' panel. "We've been talking a lot this week about where our character and our fight has to be," Dernlan said. "It was evident from top to bottom, even in the matches we were losing, that we were fighting and continuing to put them on their heels. The ten guys that are stepping up for us needed to go out and perform at their best and we did that tonight." With tonight's win, Dernlan's squad moves to 5-3 overall and 5-1 in EIWA. The Bearcats return to the West Gym this Sunday at 1 p.m. against Army. Results: HWT - Joey Goodhart (D) dec. Connor Calkins (BU), 6-2 - Drexel leads 3-0 125 - Tanner Shoap (D) dec. Jimmy Gulibon came back to defeat Topher Carton (Photo/Mark Lundy, Lutte-Lens.com) IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team (8-0, 4-0 B1G) rolled to a 26-11 win at No. 3 Iowa (7-2, 3-1 B1G) in the year's biggest Big Ten dual meet to date. Head coach Cael Sanderson's squad won seven of ten bouts to remain unbeaten on the year. The Nittany Lions increased their dual match win streak to 25 straight dating back to the end of the 2014-15 season. Penn State sent seven underclassmen into the bout against the senior-laden Hawkeyes. The dual began at 125 with one of the year's most anticipated match-ups. Nittany Lion true freshman Nick Suriano (Paramus, N.J.), ranked No. 3 at 125, met senior Thomas Gilman of Iowa, ranked No. 1. Gilman used a first period takedown and good defense against a late Suriano flurry to post a hard-fought 3-2 win. Sophomore George Carpenter (Chapel Hill, N.C.) dropped a 19-4 technical fall at the 7:00 mark to No. 3 Cory Clark at 133, giving the Hawkeyes an early 8-0 lead. Senior Jimmy Gulibon (Latrobe, Pa.), ranked No. 12 at 141, stunned No. 18 Topher Carton with a furious third period. The Lion senior fell behind early and then roared back with four third period takedowns to walk away with an 8-6 win. Junior Zain Retherford (Benton, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 149, met No. 3 Brandon Sorensen in a rematch of last year's national title bout (won by Retherford with a major). Sorensen pushed the defending NCAA champion to the limit, but Retherford's strong ride in a second tie-breaker allowed Retherford to stay unbeaten with 9-8 (TB 2) decision. Sophomore Jason Nolf (Yatesboro, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 157, closed out the first half with a dominating 9-4 win over No. 3 Michael Kemerer. Nolf posted four takedowns to none for the Hawkeye. The decision put Penn State up 9-9 heading into the halftime break. Mark Hall made his debut in the PSU lineup, and fell to Iowa's Alex Meyer (Photo/Mark Lundy, Lutte-Lens.com) Red-shirt freshman Vincenzo Joseph (Pittsburgh, Pa.), ranked No. 4 at 165, opened up the second half with a tough 7-4 win over Iowa's Joey Gunther, thanks to a three takedown first period. At 174, true freshman Mark Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) made his Penn State dual meet debut against No. 13 Alex Meyer. The fifth-year Iowa senior and returning All-American used a late takedown to post a tough 7-5 win over Hall and cut Penn State's lead to 12-11 Sophomore Bo Nickal (Allen, Texas), ranked No. 2 at 184, silenced the Hawkeye crowd by countering a shot and scramble by No. 5 Sammy Brooks and pinning the Hawkeye senior at the :38 mark. The fall put Penn State up 18-11 and stopped the Hawkeye momentum. Junior Matt McCutcheon (Apollo, Pa.), ranked No. 10 at 197, held on for an 8-7 (TB 2; RT) win over Cash Wilcke to put Penn State up 21-11 and clinch the dual meet. Sophomore Nick Nevills (Clovis, Calif.), ranked No. 5 at 285, closed out the victory with a dominating 21-6 technical fall over Steven Holloway, giving the Lions a 26-11 win. Retherford has now won 48 straight matches dating back to the end of the 13-14 season. Retherford is now 13-0 with ten pins, a tech and a major. Nolf is 13-0 with seven pins, a major and four techs. Nickal is 12-0 with ten pins and a major this season. Nevills is 12-0 with five pins and two techs. The freshman battled his way to an escape and a 2-2 at the 1:20 mark, with Gilman owning :50 in riding time. Gilman stepped back from a high Suriano shot at the :30 mark and the bout moved to the third period tied 2-2. Gilman chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 3-2 lead. Suriano nearly connected on a nice under hook, but Gilman felt the pressure and moved out of trouble with 1:20 left to wrestle. The Lion freshman drove in on the senior again and Gilman stepped out of trouble. After a double stall call for locking hands, action resumed with :20 left. Suriano's last two shots were defended and Gilman posted a hard fought 3-2 win. 133: Sophomore George Carpenter (Chapel Hill, N.C.) took on third-ranked senior Cory Clark of Iowa. Clark notched an early takedown and led 2-1 after a Carpenter escape. The Hawkeye senior added a second takedown to up his lead to 4-1 with 1:30 on the clock. He turned the Lion sophomore for four back points to lead 8-1 after the opening period. Clark chose down to start the second stanza and quickly escaped to a 9-1 lead. Carton came out trying to control action up high, but Gulibon fought off that move, then worked in on a solid single to gain control of Carton's left leg. Gulibon worked Carton to the ground, but the Hawkeye bounced behind him for a counter takedown and a 2-0 lead. After a reset, Carton was able to work Gulibon flat to the mat and build his riding time up over 1:00. The Lion senior was unable to work free for an escape and Carton led 2-0 after the opening period. Carton chose down to start the second period. Gulibon maintained control for over :30 but was hit with a first stall in the process. He then continued to control the action from the top position after a reset, working Carton's riding time down to just :48 before Carton escaped to a 3-0 lead. Gulibon worked in on a solid shot with :25 left but once again Carton was able to defend the move and force a stalemate with :08 left in the period. Trailing 3-0, Gulibon chose neutral to start the third period. Gulibon scored on a fast head inside single, picking up his first takedown with 1:40 on the clock. Retherford picked up his first takedown at the 2:00 mark, opening up a 2-1 lead after a quick Sorensen escape. Sorensen took Retherford down with a nice low single to tie the bout at 3-3 after a Retherford escape with :45 on the clock. It was the first dual meet take down given up by Retherford this year. Tied 3-3, Retherford chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 4-3 lead. The Lion junior worked his offense in the middle of the mat, taking numerous shots that Sorensen was able to defend as the clock moved below 1:00. Retherford continued to shoot, taking high singles that kept Sorensen on defense, and the action moved to the third period tied 3-3. Sorensen chose down to start the third period and Retherford worked to maintain offensive control. Sorensen escaped to a 4-4 tie with 1:20 on the clock and Retherford had only :32 in riding time. Sorensen took a go ahead takedown at the :50 mark and Retherford quickly escaped to a 6-5 score. He quickly turned in and worked a single to a takedown with just :20 left. Sorensen managed a tying escape with just :07 left and the match moved to sudden victory. Neither man mounted a charge in the extra minute, sending the bout to a tiebreaker. Zain chose down for his tie breaker and quickly escaped to an 8-7 lead. Sorensen then chose down for his :30 slot and escaped with just :07 left. The action was 8-8 heading to a second sudden victory period. Each man had slight openings with just :30 left but neither wrestler finished and action moved to a second tiebreaker tied 8-8. Sorensen chose down for the first :30 and this time Retherford was able to break the Hawkeye down and rode him out. Now taking down, Zain was cut loose quickly by Sorensen and led 9-8. The Lion then battled down the clock and escaped with a hard fought 9-8 (TB 2) decision. 157: Sophomore Jason Nolf (Yatesboro, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 157, met No. 2 Michael Kemerer in another much-anticipated battle. Nolf got in on Kemerer's left leg quickly, working his way into a scramble that nearly ended in a takedown but was called for potentially dangerous action. Nolf continued to press on offense, working his way in on another high single. The move forced a long scramble that once again ended in a stalemate at the 1:31 mark. Nolf continued to shoot, and Kemerer continued to defend. This time, Nolf came up through Kemerer's legs, with action ending in another stalemate. Undaunted by the Hawkeye's defense, Nolf continued to press on offense, forcing Kemerer into a first stall warning with :40 left in the period. Nolf finished with another shot and Kemerer was able to kill the clock. Tied 0-0, Nolf chose down to start the second period and worked his way to an escape and a 1-0 lead at the 1:30 mark. Nolf used a fast low double to finally break through the Iowa defense for a takedown and a 3-1 lead after a quick Kemerer escape. Nolf connected on a low ankle pick, stepped over Kemerer and took a 5-1 lead with :10 on the clock. A short rideout gave the Lion a 5-1 lead after two periods. Kemerer chose down to start the second stanza and Nolf controlled the action from the top position. After a blood time break, Nolf cut Kemerer loose and began working for another takedown. Nolf connected on another high single, sitting in on Kemerer during a scramble and finishing off the takedown to lead 7-3 after another cut. Nolf cut the Hawkeye loose and took him down one more time, looking for the major. Joseph wasted no time taking a 2-0 lead, working a low single to a takedown just :20 into the bout. The Lion freshman continued his offensive dominance, picking up a third takedown after a Gunther stall warning to up his lead to 6-2 with 1:00 on the clock. Gunther managed a third escape and Joseph led 6-3 after one period. Gunther chose down to start the second period and Joseph worked on top long enough to build his riding time edge up over 1:00. Gunther escaped to a 6-4 score at the 1:30 mark and Joseph continued to press on offense. Gunther was able to defend this shot and a stalemate was called with 1:01 on the clock. Joseph chose down to start the third period. He tried to roll out of control but Gunther was able to control the move and worked Joseph's time edge below 1:00. Joseph escaped to a 7-4 lead with 1:20 left to wrestle. Joseph got hit for a first stall warning with :50 on the clock and then defended a late Gunther flurry to walk away with a hard-fought 7-4 win. 174: True freshman Mark Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) made his Penn State dual debut, taking on No. 13 Alex Meyer at 174. Hall wasted no time taking Meyer down, turning a low single into a takedown and a 2-0 lead. He then controlled the action on the top, breaking the Hawkeye down. Meyer escaped to a 2-1 Hall lead. The Lion worked his way towards what was initially ruled a takedown, but the move was waived off and the Lion maintained a 2-1 lead with :26 left on the clock. Leading 2-1, Hall chose down to start the second period. He quickly escaped to a 3-1 lead and turned into the Hawkeye once more. Hall pressed the action, connecting on a high single that Meyer was able to counter at the :30 mark to tie the score at 3-3. Hall was unable to escape and action moved to the third period tied 3-3. Meyer chose down to start the final period and quickly escaped to a 4-3 lead with 1:45 left to wrestle. Hall used a fast under hook for another takedown and the bout was tied 5-5 after a quick Meyer escape. Meyer countered a Hall shot and notched the takedown that won the match with just :10 left, posting a thrilling 7-5 win. 184: Sophomore Bo Nickal (Allen, Texas), ranked No. 2 at 184, met No. 5 Sammy Brooks. Brooks got in on a low single, forcing a scramble in the middle of the mat. Nickal countered the move by locking up a spladle or cradle and flattening Brooks' shoulders for a stunning fall at the :38 mark. 197: Junior Matt McCutcheon (Apollo, Pa.), ranked No. 10 at 197, faced off against Iowa freshman Cash Wilke. McCutcheon was steady early, working his offense and notching a takedown with 1:00 on the clock to take a 2-1 lead after a quick Wilke escape. The remainder of the first period was scoreless and the Lion junior carried that one point lead into the second period. Leading 2-1, McCutcheon chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 3-1 lead. He then forced Wilcke into a first stall warning. Trailing 3-1, Wilke chose down to start the third period. McCutcheon stepped back from a slight Wilcke shot to maintain his one point lead. Wilcke took a 4-3 lead with a takedown and McCutcheon quickly escaped to a 4-4 tie to force the bout into a sudden victory period. The bout moved into a tie breaker and McCutcheon took a 6-4 lead with a quick reversal. Wilcke picked up a point on two McCutcheon stalls and McCutcheon led 6-5. Wilcke tied the bout at 6-6 with his escape and action moved into a second sudden victory period. Neither wrestler scored and action moved to a second tie breaker. Wilcke escaped quickly in his period and then McCutcheon had his turn on bottom. The Lion junior worked his way free for a 7-7 tie with McCutcheon owning :14 in riding time. The riding time edge gave McCutcheon an 8-7 (tb 2; rt) win. 285: Sophomore Nick Nevills (Clovis, Calif.), ranked No. 5 at 285, met Steven Holloway. Nevills wasted no time in opening up 2-0 lead. The Lion worked up a riding time edge before Holloway escaped. The action continued in the middle of the mat before Holloway took a low shot that Nevills was able to counter. The Lion sophomore steadily worked his way to a counter takedown and 4-1 lead. He then rode Holloway out and carried that lead into the second period. Nevills chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped. He turned in on the Hawkeye and notched his third takedown to up his lead to 7-1. Billy Miller gave Edinboro the lead for good at 12-11 with a 4-1 decision in tiebreaker over Mauro Correnti at heavyweight. Miller rode out Correnti in the first 30-second tiebreaker period. Correnti then chose neutral, with Miller registering a clinching takedown. Ranked 11th at heavyweight, Miller is now 23-8. The redshirt freshman is now 23-8. Nate Hagan (12-6) made that win anticlimactic as he put an exclamation point on the victory with a 9-1 major decision over Evan Fidelibus (9-7) at 141 lbs. COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Purdue's upper weights put big points on the board in a 29-6 win over Maryland in the XFINITY Center Pavilion on Friday. Eight of the 10 weights went the Boilermakers' way with three bouts resulting in bonus points. For the first time since 2013, Purdue has won three straight Big Ten Conference duals, moving to 8-2 overall and 3-1 in the league. Maryland dropped to 2-10 and 0-5 in the Big Ten. Jacob Morrissey and Tanner Lynde were a one-two punch with technical falls at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively. Morrissey needed just 4:26 to dispose of Sam Rowell, 15-0, after scoring a dozen points in the second period. The Oconto Falls, Wisconsin, native had a first period takedown and received a point courtesy of Rowell being called for stalling twice in the stanza. Morrissey's 60th career match resulted in career win No. 40 and the fourth tech fall of his redshirt junior campaign. Lynde didn't need much more time to roll to an 18-2 win over Idris White, doing so in 4:40. The redshirt senior snapped a three-match losing skid with a strong outing. Lynde responded to a quick White takedown by reversing the Terrapin and tilting him for a four count on two occasions, building an 11-2 lead through the opening period. An escape to start the second period followed with an immediate takedown and a four-point nearfall to bring the match to an end. The tech fall is the fourth of the season for Lynde and the 18 points are the most he has scored in a match during his career. Redshirt freshman Nate Limmex got back on track with a 13-2 major decision against Maryland's Adam Whitesell. The 149-pounder, who wrestled in his second match since suffering an injury in Las Vegas in early December, scored a takedown in each period and earned a four-point nearfall early in the match. Ben Thornton (22-8) extended his dual match winning streak to four straight with 9-3 decision over Michael Beck in the opening bout. A 4-0 decision from Kyle Ayersman at 141 pounds and a 6-4 sudden victory by Alex Griffin at 157 gave the Boilermakers a 16-3 advantage heading into the intermission. Out of the break, 165-pounder Dylan Lydy notched his first Big Ten victory, a 3-2 decision of Josh Ugalde. A hard-fought 6-3 showing from Christian Brunner (197) against David-Brian Whisler followed the back-to-back tech falls. Purdue continues its East Coast trip at No. 11 Rutgers on Sunday. Competition from the Rutgers Athletic Center is set for a noon ET start. The Scarlet Knights cruised to a 38-3 win over Oregon State on Friday. #BoilerNotes • Purdue has now won three straight Big Ten Conference duals for the first time in four years … the Boilermakers defeated Wisconsin, Northwestern, Michigan and Indiana during the window of Jan. 28 to Feb. 11, 2013. • Purdue recorded 14 takedowns and only gave up four to Maryland while outscoring the Terrapins 77-22. • The Boilermakers evened the all-time series with Maryland at 2-2 with both of their wins coming in back-to-back seasons. • Kyle Ayersman wrestled in his 95th career match … Tanner Lynde wrestled in his 85th career match. • Jacob Morrissey tallied 10 back points and moved into 11th on the career back points record list with 166, bypassing Chad Welch (2013-16), who had 165. STILLWATER -- The top-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team recorded its fifth 30-plus point victory of the season Friday night, handling West Virginia, 38-3, at Gallagher-Iba Arena to move to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in Big 12 action. The Cowboys got five bonus point wins to put the Mountaineers away early, including a first-period fall from senior Kyle Crutchmer to go along with technical falls from Nick Piccininni, Nolan Boyd and Austin Schafer. After a rough go in last week's match against top-ranked Thomas Gilman of Iowa, Piccininni got back on track and up to speed Friday night, setting the tone for the dual with a second-period technical fall over Devin Brown at 125 pounds. The redshirt freshman took a 14-1 lead into the second period after a pair of takedowns followed by three nearfalls in the first. After Brown escaped from the down position to open the second frame, Piccininni dropped the Mountaineer for another takedown and the four-point nearfall that would seal up the 20-2 tech in 4:03. "It's a little bit of pressure, but it's definitely a pacesetter,†Piccininni said. “I'm looking to set the pace high. Not just for myself, but for the rest of the guys following behind me. It's very important for me to start it off. Just go hard and feed the energy to my teammates and the crowd.†At 133 pounds, Kaid Brock recorded an 11-5 decision over West Virginia's Cory Stainbrook. Brock did most of his scoring in the first two periods, scoring on three takedowns in the first and opening the second with a reversal to take an 8-2 lead into the third. Stainbrook scored a quick three points in the opening minute of the third, escaping and converting two on a takedown, but it wouldn't be enough as Brock reversed yet again to lock up the victory. “Kaid Brock again scored points in the first period and not sustain it on the second and third,†head coach John Smith said. “Those are things we have to recognize and be hard on ourselves. Not that he wrestled badly, but you just need to make sure you are taking care of the second and third period and being a little more solid with it. He scored three take downs in the first and the second and third period won four to two. Try to judge it that way.†Dean Heil scored bonus points for the Cowboys in a 14-4 major decision over Joe Wheeling at 141 pounds. Leading, 7-1, after two periods, the Cowboys' reigning national champion made moves in the third, scoring a trio of takedowns and picking up the riding time point to secure the major. Senior Anthony Collica handled Christian Monserrat at 149 pounds, recording five takedowns in the match with two in each of the first two periods to score a 13-5 major decision for the Pokes. At 157 pounds, Joe Smith came out on top to defeat West Virginia's Dayton Garrett in a 3-0 decision, thanks to a decisive takedown in the third period that would seal the match. Chandler Rogers also won by decision in his matchup with eighth-ranked Dylan Cottrell at 165. Both wrestlers struggled to score in the first two periods, but Rogers managed a takedown in the first and an escape to open the second to lead, 3-0, heading to the final period. Rogers was dinged for locking hands to open the third, but used a two-point nearfall to boost his lead back up to 5-1. Cottrell would score a takedown late, but Rogers would hold on for the 6-4 win. Senior Kyle Crutchmer came out aggressive in his match at 174 pounds, dropping opponent Ty Millward for a quick score just seconds into the match before rolling the West Virginia junior over his shoulders and onto his back for the pin in 1:39. It was the second fall of the season for Crutchmer, with both coming in the first period. Nolan Boyd piled on at 184 pounds, recording a quick, 20-3 technical fall in only 4:09 over Kyle Rogers to earn his 99th triumph as a Cowboy. The Cowboy senior got four takedowns and a pair of nearfalls in the first to take a 14-3 lead into the second frame. Boyd would finish off the match quickly, choosing neutral to start the period and converting a takedown and four-point nearfall in just over a minute to wrap up the win. Austin Schafer also made quick work of his opponent, defeating Brandon Ngati by way of first-period technical fall. Schafer wasted no time, scoring a takedown and turning Ngati four times to end the match in 2:56. The Cowboys will be back in action this Sunday when they return to Gallagher-Iba Arena to host the 19th-ranked Jackrabbits of South Dakota State at 2 p.m. Tickets can be bought at okstate.com/tickets. At 133 pounds, All-American Eric Montoya, the No. 5-ranked wrestler by InterMat, won a 13-6 decision over 16th-ranked Mitch McKee, which gave Nebraska a 12-11 advantage after seven matches, its first lead of the night. PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- No. 11 Rutgers wrestling dominated visiting Oregon State Friday night at the Rutgers Athletic Center, winning nine of 10 bouts in a 38-3 victory. The Scarlet Knights (8-2, 2-1) captured wins at nine-straight weight classes to open the dual and improved to 3-0 at home in front of 2,251 fans. Five Scarlet Knights captured bonus point wins Friday evening, beginning at the top of the lineup with freshman 125-pounder Brandon Paetzell. Paetzell tied Kegan Calkins up in a cradle midway through the third period for his 11th win and first dual pin. Two matches later, No. 6-ranked 141-pounder Anthony Ashnault tallied his fourth major decision of the season, 15-2, against NCAA qualifier Jonathan Hathaway to improve to 17-3. Thirteen of Ashnault's wins this season have been by bonus points. No. 14 149-pounder Ken Theobold and 174-pounder Phillip Bakuckas recorded the lone tech falls on the night in their matchups. Collectively, the two redshirt seniors outscored the opposition, 34-2, as Theobold snapped a three-match skid and Bakuckas bounced back from a pair of ranked losses to move to 11-5. No. 14 Nicholas Gravina rode the momentum from the Bakuckas win and neared tech fall territory in the third period, but instead planted Bob Coleman on his back for the fall. He moves to 13-4 overall. Early in the match Scott DelVecchio topped two-time NCAA qualifier Joseph Palmer by a 6-2 final and is now 15-6 overall. No. 18 John Van Brill closed out a 10-3 win against Abraham Rodriguez with a four-point near fall as time expired to win for the second time in three matches. Competing in his first dual of the year was redshirt senior 165-pounder Anthony Pafumi. Pafumi toughed out a 4-0 win against Rodney Williams to draw even at 9-9 this season. The biggest win of the night was the final one for the Scarlet Knights, as freshman Matthew Correnti topped No. 18 Corey Griego, 3-2, at 197 pounds for the first ranked win of his career. Correnti escaped in the third period to take a 3-2 lead and did enough to keep Griego in check late. With less than 30 seconds remaining Griego took a shot and nearly wrapped up both of the freshman's legs, but Correnti fought it off. Correnti is now 10-7. Heavyweight Razohnn Gross was edged, 4-2, in a tight bout with NCAA qualifier Cody Crawford. Crawford held riding time late in a 3-2 match and defended Gross to secure the win. Purdue (8-2, 3-1) visits the RAC on Sunday at noon. The dual will stream live on BTN Plus, with Lou Brogno and Sean DeDeyn on the call. NORFOLK, VA -- The University at Buffalo wrestling team scored an impressive 22-14 win over Old Dominion at the Ted Constant Center on Friday night. It was UB's first Mid-American Conference road dual win since 2012. Tyler Rill and James Benjamin recorded the biggest wins of the night as each grappler took down nationally-ranked opponents. Rill wrestled his best match of the season and earned a 13-5 major decision over 15th-ranked Seldon Wright. Benjamin earned a 3-1 overtime decision over #11 Kevin Beazley. The Bulls got off to a great start in the match as Kyle Akins earned an 18-2 technical fall victory over Steven Simpson at 125. Bryan Lantry (133) followed with a 17-6 major decision over Alex Madrigal and Buffalo quickly led 9-0. After the Monarchs won the next two matches to cut the lead to 9-7, Alex Smythe won a 2-1 decision over Austin Eads to extend the UB advantage to 12-7. Rill's major win at 165 made the score 16-7. Old Dominion didn't go away and won the next two matches at 174 and 184 to cut the Buffalo advantage to 16-14. However, Benjamin's OT win slammed the door on the Monarchs' threat. Jake Gunning closed out the dual with a 4-2 decision over Will Hilliard. "What a great win for this program," head coach John Stutzman said. "Tyler Rill and James Benjamin both beat nationally ranked guys and past NCAA qualifiers. I'm excited for these guys." The Bulls improved to 7-4 overall and 2-2 in MAC duals on the season. EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Central Michigan won six matches -- three by major decision and one via technical fall -- Friday in downing Michigan State, 23-12, in a nonconference wrestling dual at the Spartans' Jenison Fieldhouse. The win lifted CMU to 3-1. The Chippewas, who are ranked 16th, go to No. 8 Missouri on Sunday for a MAC dual (2 p.m.). CMU dropped its league-opening dual to Northern Iowa, 17-16, last weekend. “it's a big challenge for us,†CMU coach Tom Borrelli said of the meet with Missouri, which is 8-2 overall, 5-0 MAC. “We'll find out whether we're up for it or not.†The Chippewas got an 18-1 technical fall victory from CJ Brucki at 174 pounds against the Spartans (3-7) on Friday. CMU's Brent Fleetwood (125), Justin Oliver (149) and Jordan Ellingwood (184) each won by major decision. “Very happy with our aggressiveness and trying to continue to score points for the whole seven minutes,†Borrelli said. The meet opened at 184, and the Chippewas won the first four matches. CMU's Austin Severn (197) and Newton Smerchek (HWT) followed Ellingwood with decision victories, and Fleetwood posted his major to extend the Chippewa lead to 14-0. Michigan State won by decision at 133 and 141 before Oliver, who is the highest-ranked Chippewa nationally (sixth at 149) won by major decision to put CMU comfortably in front 18-6. That allowed Borrelli the luxury of resting junior Colin Heffernan, who is ranked eighth at 157. “That was real important,†Borrelli said. Kyle Noonan, normally a 141-pounder, stepped in at 157 in place of Heffernan and though he dropped an 8-3 decision, Borrelli was pleased with his performance as he was with Mason Smith (141) and Logan Parks (165). Smith and Parks each lost by decision, but they didn't surrender any bonus points. “Mason and Parks wrestled their two best wrestlers and they held them both to decisions and Noonan wrestling up two weight classes – all three of those guys came through,†Borrelli said. “You give up bonus points or a pin, that can change everything.†Results: 125: Brent Fleetwood (CMU) maj. dec. Clarion defeats George Mason to pick up third straight win
InterMat Staff posted an article in College
CLARION, Pa. -- The Clarion wrestling team won its third straight dual match with a sound effort on Friday, earning their first Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) match of the season with a 24-10 victory over George Mason. The Golden Eagles (4-6, 1-2 EWL) will be back in action on Sunday against Michigan State. The Golden Eagles won seven of the 10 bouts on the mat on Friday, finally clinching the team bout when Scott Marmoll won the 184-pound bout over Austin Harrison. The match was truly put out of reach one bout earlier, though, with Dom Rigous notching his fifth pin of the season to bump Clarion's lead to 18-7. Jake Gromacki opened the match with an impressive decision in the 125-pound bout, taking advantage of a miscue by Ibrahim Bunduka for the win. With the bout scoreless to start the second period and Bunduka in the down position, Gromacki caught his opponent in a cradle for a four-point near-fall. Gromacki rode Bunduka out through the period and deftly handled him in the third for the 6-0 win. That was followed up by another win, with Roshaun Cooley impressively working Lio Quezada for a 7-3 decision. The third straight win came from Brock Zacherl, who held off Tejon Anthony for a decision to give Clarion a 9-0 match lead. George Mason won two straight matches, including a major decision and a sudden victory, to pull within 9-7, but Evan Delong righted the ship at 165 pounds. Facing off with Ryan Forrest and with the score tied 4-4 late in the third period, Delong brought his opponent down with a double leg takedown to pull ahead 6-4, and successfully held Forrest off for the victory. The highlight of the night came from Rigous, who shoved the dagger into the Patriots with a win by fall. RIgous led 5-0 early in the second period when he brought Daniel Mika down and cradled him for the pin, giving Clarion an 18-7 advantage. Marmoll officially clinched the match with an 8-2 decision over Austin Harrison, and Dustin Conti scored the last win of the night with a 5-3 decision at 197 pounds. BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- No. 7 Lehigh dropped the opening bout of the night, then reeled off eight straight victories to pick up its fifth consecutive dual win as the Mountain Hawks downed EIWA rival Penn 28-9 Friday night inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Three Mountain Hawks posted bonus wins on the night as Lehigh improves to 8-1 in duals and 6-0 against EIWA opponents. Sophomore Ryan Preisch capped the 8-0 Lehigh run with an impressive 9-1 major decision over returning All-American Casey Kent at 174. "He's just steady," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said of Preisch. "He's getting a little bit better each week and is in the middle of a really tough stretch (of opponents). He's excited for the opportunity to wrestle these guys and see where he is and what he needs to do for the NCAA Tournament." Junior Darian Cruz and senior Randy Cruz also delivered bonus wins to pace the Brown and White. Penn's Frank Mattiace opened the dual with a 5-2 win over senior Ben Haas at 197 but senior Doug Vollaro pulled the Mountain Hawks even, making a late first period takedown stand in a 4-0 decision over Tyler Hall. Darian Cruz's 17-6 major decision over Jeremy Schwartz at 125 gave Lehigh a lead it would not relinquish. Cruz finished with six takedowns and benefitted from three stalling points but had to settle for the four team points when Schwartz narrowly avoided a stalling disqualification. Freshman Joe Lobeck's Grace Hall debut was a victorious one as he defeated Tristan DeVincenzo 8-3 at 133. Lobeck scored a takedown in the first six seconds of the bout and added a second period reversal while remaining strong on top. DeVincenzo battled back to secure a takedown of his own but Lobeck clinched the win with a late takedown and finished with nearly four minutes of riding time. Randy Cruz closed out the first half of the dual with an impressive 15-0 technical fall over A.J. Vindici. Cruz scored an early takedown and then scored three four-point near falls, before closing out the match with an escape six seconds into the second period. Cruz's 94th career win gave Lehigh a 15-3 lead at intermission. "Any time you can get bonus points in a dual meet it's huge," Santoro said. "Every match can go either way but if you keep winning them it looks like a blowout, when in reality, there were a lot of good matches. The bonus points did help create some separation." At 149, senior Laike Gardner yielded the first takedown against Joe Oliva, but battled back for an 11-5 decision. Gardner reversed Oliva in the first period and then tilted Oliva for four early in the second. He clinched the match with a late takedown that got him to exactly one minute of riding time. Freshman Jordan Kutler and senior Mitch Minotti both made first period takedowns stand in their respective bouts at 157 and 165. Kutler scored an early takedown and added a second period escape plus riding time in a 4-1 decision over May Bethea. Minotti scored an early takedown against Brooks Martino, but Martino rode out the second period and then forced Minotti to survive a late scramble to win 3-1. "Mitch did a nice job," Santoro said. "(Martino) is a tough kid. It was Mitch's first time out in Grace Hall in a while, but it was good for him to execute the way he does." Sixth-ranked Preisch was impressive in his major decision win over No. 10 Kent, Preisch's 16th win of the season against just one loss. Preisch tallied takedowns in each period plus a second period escape and nearly two minutes of riding time. The final bout of the dual went to the Quakers as Joe Heyob won by injury default in 6:53 over freshman Kyle Gentile. It was Gentile who scored the first takedown, but Heyob came back to lead 4-3 late in the third period. Gentile was injured trying to defend a Heyob takedown attempt with Heyob awarded two plus two before Gentile was unable to continue. Takedowns finished 17-6 in favor of Lehigh as the Mountain Hawks captured their fourth straight victory over the Quakers, who fall to 1-4 in duals and 0-3 against EIWA foes. "We didn't have a lot of pop tonight but that's in part to the training phase we're in," Santoro said. "Hopefully day two we're a little better, like last weekend, but we need to respond and focus on what we need to do tomorrow." The Mountain Hawks return to action Saturday afternoon when they welcome No. 10 Cornell to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall for the annual Billy Sheridan Memorial Dual. The 2 p.m. match is close to sold out but a limited number of tickets remain at LehighTickets.com. Results: 197 - Frank Mattiace (Penn) dec. Ben Haas (Lehigh) 5-2 285 - Doug Vollaro (Lehigh) dec.
