ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team continued its perfect start to the 2018-19 season, claiming seven individual matches en route to a 23-9 win over No. 18 Purdue on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 20) in front of 1,756 fans at Cliff Keen Arena. The Wolverines improved to 8-0 on the season, tying the program's best start since an undefeated 14-0 season in 1973-74. Michigan also started 8-0 during the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons. Michigan owns four wins over ranked opponents this season and is 4-0 in Big Ten Conference duals. Michigan earned bonus points in two bouts, while three Wolverines defeated ranked Purdue opponents. Senior/junior Stevan Micic, ranked No. 1 nationally at 133 pounds, did both, cruising to a 9-1 major decision over 19th-ranked Ben Thornton to put U-M ahead for good in the dual's second bout. Micic scored on takedowns in the first and second periods, added a two-point tilt in the second and rode out the third to accumulate 4:33 in time advantage. He improved to 8-0 on the season with seven bonus wins. Junior/sophomore Kanen Storr, ranked fifth at 141 pounds, also took advantage of a third-period rideout in his 2-0 decision over Nate Limmex in the subsequent bout. After a scoreless first period, Storr escaped quickly in the second and used several hard mat returns to stay in control in the third. He finished with 1:51 in riding-time advantage. Senior/junior Ben Lamantia picked up his second dual win this weekend while filling in for fifth-year senior Malik Amine at 149 pounds, coming up just short of a bonus point with an 11-4 decision against Parker Filius. Lamantia scored four takedowns, including two in the first period, and rode for exactly 1:00 advantage time. Lamantia also owns a dual win at 157 pounds this season. Fifth-year senior Alec Pantaleo, ranked 11th at 157 pounds, rallied to a 4-3 decision over 12th-ranked Griffin Parriott behind a late double-leg takedown and rideout in the second period. Pantaleo, who trailed early after giving up a takedown in a first-period scramble, escaped quickly in the third to take his first lead and stayed on the attack, just missing on a couple late shots to ice it. Pantaleo, who missed most of the first semester with illness, has defeated ranked opponents in two of his last three wins. Senior/junior Logan Massa, ranked seventh at 165 pounds, secured his second major decision of the weekend with a dominant 14-4 win over Cole Wysocki after the intermission break. Massa scored on six takedowns, including three in the first period, and rode for 3:13. It was his second bonus win over Wyscoki this season, adding to a 9-1 major decision at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational (Nov. 30-Dec. 1). Senior/junior Myles Amine, ranked third nationally, flipped a loss from last season's Purdue dual with a 5-3 decision over 14th-ranked Dylan Lydy at 174 pounds. Amine scored on a fireman's carry on the edge early in the first -- that was challenged and upheld -- and iced the bout with a high crotch midway through the third. Amine is a near-perfect 13-1 on the season. After back-to-back Purdue wins at 184 and 197 pounds, freshman Mason Parris closed out the dual with a 10-7 decision against Jacob Aven at heavyweight. Parris, ranked eighth nationally and unbeaten in duals, used two first-period single legs to build an early lead, but Purdue tied it with a counter takedown late in the period. Parris added another single on a second-period restart and accumulated 2:24 in riding-time advantage. Michigan (8-0, 4-0 Big Ten) will square off against rival Ohio State, also undefeated and ranked No. 2 nationally, next Friday (Jan. 25) at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio. The dual is slated for a 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network. Results: 125 -- Devin Schroder (PU) dec. Moisey controlled action from the top for nearly 2:00 before Schnupp was hit with a first stall warning. Leading 2-0 with 2:42 in time, chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 3-0 lead. Moisey added a second takedown to up his lead to 5-0. Schnupp was unable to break free of another strong Moisey ride and trailed 5-0 with over 4:00 of riding time against after two periods. Schnupp chose down to start the third period and got the escape to trail 5-1. Schnupp began to up the tempo on offense, looking for a chance to take the former NCAA finalist down. Moisey was able to fight off Schnupp's efforts but the Lion's late offense kept the bout to a 6-1 decision. 133: True freshman Roman Bravo-Young (Tucson, Ariz.), ranked No. 13 at 133, battled Husker freshman Jevon Parrish. Bravo-Young scored quickly, turning a high single into a takedown and an early 2-0 lead. Bravo-Young maintained control until he had 1:00 in riding time before he cut Parrish loose to a 4-2 score. The Lion freshman bulled through a high shot, knocking Parrish back and finishing off the takedown lead to 6-2 with under 1:00 to wrestle. The Lion finished off the period in control and led 6-2 with 1:52 in riding time after the first period. Bravo-Young chose neutral to start the second period. Bravo-Young continued to set the offensive pace as Parrish worked the outside circle. But the Lion freshman was relentless, getting his fourth takedown at the :45 mark to lead 8-3 after cutting Parrish loose. Bravo-Young added another takedown at the :25 mark and led 1-3 with 2:35 in riding time after two periods. Parrish chose down to start the third period and Bravo-Young cut him to a 10-4 score. The Lion, looking for bonus points, quickly added two more takedowns to up his lead to 14-5. Lee got in on a high single at the :50 mark and, after a brief scramble, finished off the takedown to open up a 2-0 lead. The Lion was able to maintain control of Red for the final seconds and led 5-2 with :48 in time after the opening stanza. Lee chose down to start the second period and quickly worked his way into a position to notch a reversal. But Red was able to maintain the offensive position and forced a reset with 1:10 on the clock. Lee worked his way to his feet and forced Red into a second stall, taking a 3-0 lead. Red finished the period on top but Lee led 3-0 after two. Red chose down to start the final period and Lee was able to control the Husker long enough to erase Red's riding time edge. Lee led 3-1 with 1:35 on the clock but Red was able to counter a Lee shot, taking him down to tie the bout 3-3 and work his riding time point up over 1:00. Lee took a 4-3 lead on another Red Stall but the Husker maintained offensive control and had 1:27 in riding time with :39 to wrestle. Lee escaped to a 5-3 lead after a reset and fought off a late Red flurry to post a 5-4 win. 149: Redshirt freshman Brady Berge (Mantorville, Minn.), ranked No. 10 at 149, took on Husker Jordan Shearer. Berge worked the middle of the mat for a minute, nearly scoring on a quick shot at the 2:00 mark. But Shearer was able to step back from the effort and the bout continued scoreless through the midway point of the first period. Berge shot low on Shearer again, working right ankle control into a takedown and a 2-0 lead with :25 on the clock. Berge maintained control for the rest of the period but gave up a first stall warning in the process. Shearer chose down to start the second period and worked his way to an escape and a 2-1 score with 1:45 on the clock. Berge shot again but Shearer was able to force a stalemate with 1:00 on the clock. The Lion freshman continued to set the pace, shooting consistently and forcing Shearer into defense. Shearer took his first shot at the: 15 mark of the second period but Berge was able to fight off the effort and led 2-1 after two. Nolf wasted no time in taking a lead, using a single leg to lift Berger into the air, finishing off the takedown to lead 2-1 after cutting the second-ranked Husker loose. Nolf was steady in the middle of the mat, connecting on a low single at the 1:15 mark. Berger forced a scramble but Nolf was undeterred, moving around for another takedown and a 4-2 lead after another cut. Nolf led 4-2 after the first period and took down to start the second. The Lion senior quickly escaped to a 5-2 lead and immediately moved in on offense. Nolf's relentless pressure allowed the Lion to connect on another low shot but Berger was able to force a stalemate with a potentially dangerous hold. Nolf quickly connected on a reset, notching his third takedown with :40 on the clock to up his lead to 7-2. Trailing 7-2, Berger chose down to start the third period and Berger gave up a stall warning while Nolf cut him loose to a 7-3 score. Berge connected on a high single at the 1:30 mark, but Nolf easily forced a stalemate and a reset with 1:19 to wrestle. Nolf scrambled his way to a fourth takedown to lead 9-4 after cutting Berger loose again and then picked up another point on a Berger penalty. The Lion pressed the action for the final :15 and posted a dominating 10-4 win. 165: Senior Vincenzo Joseph (Pittsburgh, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 165, met No. 6 Isaiah White in another top-ten battle. The talented duo battled evenly for the first minute, with neither wrestler grabbing an early advantage. Joseph worked the center circle for the next minute, forcing White backwards towards the outside circle as the clock moved below the 1:00 mark. The Lion junior took multiple shots but White was able to play defense for the first 3:00 and keep the bout scoreless. With the bout tied 0-0 after one, White chose down to start the second stanza. Joseph was strong on top, however, breaking White down and controlling the action for over 1:00. Joseph's strong ride forced White into a first stall waring at the :40 mark and the Lion finished on top. Tied 0-0 but with 2:00 in time to his side, Joseph chose down to start the third period. The Lion worked his way to his feet and escaped to a 1-0 lead with 1:04 on the clock and 1:06 in riding time. Joseph worked for shoulder control in the middle of the mat but White was able to defend the efforts. Joseph's 1:06 in riding time gave the Lion a 2-0 win. 174: Junior Mark Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.), ranked No. 1 nationally, took on No. 9 Mike Labriola in an anticipated match-up at 174. Hall stalked the middle of the mat, keeping Labriola moving backwards as the Lion junior looked for an opening to score. Hall's consistent pressure forced Labriola into a first stall at the :50 mark. He then worked his way in on a low single and then steadily fought through a scramble for a takedown and a 2-0 lead with :15 on the clock. Leading by two, Hall chose down to start the second period. He quickly escaped to a 3-0 lead and then went on offense again. Labriola countered a Hall shot and managed to trip the Lion to the mat for a takedown. But Hall quickly escaped and led 4-2 with :43 left in the second period. Trailing 4-2, Labriola chose down to start the third period. Hall controlled the action from the top position but was called for locked hands. Penn State challenged the call but the call stood and Hall led 4-3. Hall continued on top as the clock moved to the :40 mark and had over 1:00 in riding time. The Lion finished the match on top but Nebraska challenged the action, looking for a locked hands. Venz worked his way to a takedown and an early 2-0 lead on the Lion freshman. Manville worked his way to an escape and a 2-1 deficit and then nearly scored on a low single but Venz was able to force a stalemate. Leading 2-1, Venz chose down to start the second period and escaped to a 3-1 lead. Manville took a high single, Venz countered, but Manville was able to stay neutral on his feet and action resumed in the center circle at the 1:00 mark. The Lion freshman fought off another late shot by Venz and trailed 3-1 after two periods. Trailing by two, Manville chose neutral to start the third period and once again got in on a low single before Venz forced a stalemate with a scramble. Manville shot again but this time Venz was able to counter for a takedown and a 5-1 lead. Manville fought off a Venz turn attempt as he worked to escape the Husker ride. He gave up one stall point. Venz finished on top and with 2:15 in time, posted the hard-fought 7-1 win over the Lion 165-pounder. 197: Senior Bo Nickal (Allen, Texas), ranked No. 1 at 197, met No. 11 Eric Schultz. Nickal chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 5-2 lead. Nickal's relentless pressure allowed the Lion to work his way to a third takedown and a 7-3 lead with 1:00 on the clock. Schultz was able to defend his way to the end of the second period with Nickal leading 7-3. Schultz chose down to start the third period and escaped to a 7-4 score at the 1:25 mark with Nickal owning 1:48 in time. With the bout scoreless after the opening stanza, Cassar chose down to 10-4 the second period and quickly escaped to a 1-0 lead. Cassar worked the middle of the mat, looking to turn shoulder control into an offensive opportunity. But Jensen was able to step back from every Cassar shot and keep the action neutral as the clock moved below the 1:00 mark. Jensen took a soft low shot at the :05 and Cassar took advantage, using his quickness to step behind the effort and score the takedown to lead 2-0 after two. Jensen chose down to start the third and escaped to a 2-1 score. WASHINGTON -- The Lehigh wrestling team rode a fast start to pick up its fourth straight dual meet win as the Mountain Hawks won the first six bouts and seven overall in a 25-12 triumph at American Saturday at Bender Arena. The Mountain Hawks won the first three key swing bouts by decision and senior Gordon Wolf added a win by technical fall, while junior Jordan Kutler and sophomore Jordan Wood posted major decision wins as Lehigh improves to 4-7 on the dual season. The dual started at 141 where junior Ryan Pomrinca met Jack Mutchnik. Pomrinca struck for the first takedown in the first period but when Mutchnik answered with a third period takedown on a headlock, the match went to overtime tied 4-4. After a scoreless sudden victory period, Pomrinca escaped in the first half of the tiebreaker and then rode out the second half to get Lehigh started with a 5-4 decision. "He did a great job," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said of Pomrinca. "He's starting to figure out his offense a little better. He's trusting his shots more. That's what he needs to do to compete as we move towards March." Senior Cortlandt Schuyler followed with a 3-2 decision over Michael Sprague at 149. Schuyler scored a second period takedown off an ankle pick and held on in the third period after a late insurance takedown was waved off as he improves to 4-0 all-time against Sprague. Freshman Josh Humphreys topped Kizhan Clarke 8-5 at 157 to put the Mountain Hawks up 9-0 after three bouts. Humphreys scored two first period takedowns and added a second period reversal following Clarke's lone takedown. Wolf delivered the first bonus win of the night with a 19-2 technical fall over Elijah Murphy at 165. Three first period takedowns and a two-point near fall had Wolf up 8-2 after one. He added a second period escape and takedown before securing a pair of four point near falls to end the match at 4:47. Kutler followed with a 16-3 major decision over Conner Allshouse, collecting five takedowns and a second period four point near fall to give the Mountain Hawks an 18-0 lead at intermission. Sophomore Chris Weiler made his third straight start at 184 and extended Lehigh's lead to 21-0 with a 9-7 decision over Tanner Harvey. Weiler scored the first takedown and nearly pinned Harvey with a first period cradle, settling for a four point near fall and holding on at the end. An injury default allowed American to get on the board for the first time. Sophomore Jake Jakobsen had scored a takedown and led Prince Hyeamang 2-0 in the second period when he went down with an injury. Jakobsen was unable to continue and remained down on the mat for a considerable amount of time before making his way over to the Lehigh bench. With Lehigh's lead cut to 21-6, Wood clinched the match for the Brown and White with a 12-2 major decision over Niko Camacho at 285. Wood scored two first period takedowns and added a late four point near fall to lead 8-1 after one, then wrapped up the major decision with a late third period takedown. American (2-4) took the final two bouts as Gage Curry held off freshman Luke Resnick 6-4 at 125 and Josh Terao won a 10-5 decision over sophomore Brandon Paetzell at 133. Resnick scored first in his match but Curry used a reversal, a takedown and two escapes to pick up his win. Paetzell gave up a pair of two point near falls in the second period, which turned a 2-2 bout into a 6-3 deficit after two periods. "Luke needed to get one more at the end and we thought he was going to get it," Santoro said. "He did a great job. At 133 I thought we did a great job in that match but we gave up two quick turns. He went down 6-2 and had to start chasing. He's getting better, he just needs to start winning those matches." Lehigh wraps up its road swing on Sunday when the Mountain Hawks visit Navy. Match time is set for 2 p.m. from Alumni Hall in Annapolis, Md. The match will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network plus Stadium OTA and Facebook. Audio coverage will be available on WLVR-FM (91.3). "It was a good performance," Santoro said. "I think we'll need to be a little sharper tomorrow. Navy's going to be really excited to wrestle us. We need to bring the fight tomorrow in a pretty hostile environment." The 2018-19 Lehigh wrestling season is presented by the Historic Hotel Bethlehem. Results: 141 – Ryan Pomrinca (Lehigh) dec. PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Oklahoma State wrestling team defeated Pittsburgh in Fitzgerald Field House on Saturday to maintain its unblemished dual record. Four Cowboys recorded bonus-point wins, and Wyatt Sheets notched a decision win over 10th-ranked Taleb Rahmani, in the 33-9 victory. Redshirt sophomore Sheets took over at 157 pounds for the Cowboys this weekend in place of Andrew Shomers, who bumped up a weight to fill in for Chandler Rogers. Sheets rode out the second period after giving up one takedown in the first. In the final period, the Cowboy picked up a takedown and nearfall to secure the 9-3 decision. "That was a big match for Wyatt," said coach John Smith. "That guy is ranked anywhere from eight to 12. It got kind of tight for a second, and Wyatt hit a single-leg I hadn't seen him hit to get the takedown. He recovered after the stall call, came out and separated the score. He wore him down and finished him off. That was good." At 141 pounds, Kaid Brock earned his second fall of the season over Lorenzo Bentley in 32 seconds. Brock's bout was followed with another pin for the Cowboys from Kaden Gfeller. InterMat Staff posted an article in College
COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Fifth-ranked Mizzou Wrestling earned its eighth consecutive conference championship and second consecutive MAC regular season title after defeating Central Michigan, 32-15, Saturday (Jan. 19) at Mizzou Arena. With the win, Mizzou is now a perfect 13-0 on the season and has now won four of the last five MAC regular season championships while extending its current win streak to 33 consecutive duals. Dating back to 2014, Mizzou has won 70 of its last 71 duals. Mizzou is 6-0 in MAC duals this season. With the regular season title, Mizzou has won either a conference tournament or regular season title in eight consecutive years dating back to its final season in the Big 12. Mizzou won seven of 10 bouts Saturday. "It's always about team goals and one of our team goals every season is winning the MAC regular season title," head coach Brian Smith said. "It's another trophy in the case, we may need to buy a new trophy case. That's a good thing. It's not an easy thing to always do. We lost a couple years ago to Northern Iowa and that hurt the team. This is always one of our goals in the season and the next one we have is at our conference meet." At 125 pounds, freshman Dack Punke was tied with CMU's Drew Hildebrandt, 2-2, late in the third period when he nearly scored a takedown at the end of regulation, but ran out of time. In the first sudden victory period, Hildebrandt scored a takedown just 20 seconds in to earn the 4-2 win. 10th-ranked John Erneste earned an impressive pin, his second in as many bouts, as he pinned Deven Perez in just 1:18, using his legs to put Perez's back on the mat to thunderous applause from the crowd. At 141, third-ranked Jaydin Eierman dominated Drew Marten, tallying seven takedowns, a reversal and a four-point near fall before earning a pin in the third period (5:36), his 10th of the season. PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Seniors Jon Viruet and CJ LaFragola both won twice on the day as Brown University wrestling swept past Franklin & Marshall College, 21-18, and Bucknell University, 20-18, in a pair of EIWA dual meets on Saturday at the Pizzitola Sports Center to cap its home-opening weekend. The Bears (4-2, 2-1 EIWA) opened with a 10-0 lead and held an edge as large as 21-9 against the Diplomats (2-2, 0-1 EIWA) in their first dual of the day before rallying from a 15-3 deficit – winning four of the last five bouts – to upend the Bison (3-6, 1-3 EIWA) in the nightcap. "I'm really proud of the way our team competed today to come away with two wins in conference duals," Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. "We found different ways to win in both duals. Against F&M, we had some key early victories and then added some timely bonus-point wins. Against Bucknell, we showed tremendous resiliency and battled through all 10 weight classes." Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) tallied 10 team points on the day, including his third fall of the year, and now has 20 wins on the season – his third straight 20-win campaign. LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) posted eight team points, including his first technical fall of the year. Against Bucknell, Viruet's major decision initiated a 17-3 run that Brown used to close and win the dual. Next, Brown hosts a pair of EIWA duals on Saturday, Jan. 26 against No. 10 Cornell at 11:00 a.m. (ESPN+) and Binghamton at 7:00 p.m. in the program's fifth annual "Rumble and Tumble" combined meet with Brown gymnastics. Viruet recorded his third fall and 19th win of the year while LaFragola notched his first technical fall and 14th win of the season. LARAMIE, Wyo. -- The eighth-ranked Wyoming wrestling team earned its seventh consecutive win on Friday night, defeating Big 12 foe Air Force, 33-3, in the UniWyo Sports Complex. "I saw a lot of those matchups that could be tight," head coach Mark Branch said. "Consistently, they came out and wrestled well. I think it's gratifying to see those things you focused on during the week come into play. We saw some stuff on top we've been doing. We've really focused on quicker finishes…Those are habits that you want to see kick in. The teams got off to a late start, with weather delaying Air Force's arrival and pushing the dual back over an hour beyond the originally scheduled start time; however, the Cowboys showed toughness in jumping on the Falcons from the start and not letting up. The Pokes won nine out of 10 bouts, with four of their victories coming with bonus points. "It was a dominant performance," Branch said. "And you start to wonder because our guys were pretty irritable waiting on Air Force to get here being down to wait by 5:30 when we didn't end up weighing in until 7:10. You get irritated pretty quick when you thought you were going to be able to eat an hour ago. We just wanted to keep them calm and keep them focused. Everything was kind of thrown out of wack, so I was happy that they responded well." The dual opened at 157 pounds, where Dewey Krueger matched up with Air Force's Alex Mossing. Krueger rebounded from an early Mossing takedown in the first 30 seconds of the match and a 2-1 deficit heading into the second period. Krueger outscored Mossing, 3-0, in the second, escaping from bottom within a few seconds before notching the go-ahead takedown with 35 seconds to go in the frame. With Mossing electing to start the final period in neutral, the Cowboy was able to fend off a handful of attacks for the 4-2 win. Senior Branson Ashworth stayed hot at 165 pounds, winning his 10th bout in a row and recording his seventh-straight bonus point match. Ashworth closed out Falcon Marcus Amico before the end of the second period, racking up three takedowns and three nearfalls on the way to an 18-2 tech. In his seven-match bonus point streak, the Cowboy has compiled three pins, two technical falls and two major decisions. At 174, redshirt freshman Hayden Hastings rebounded from a Cody Surratt takedown in the first five seconds of the bout to score a takedown of his own and lead, 3-2, heading to the second. From that point it was all Hastings, who strung together four takedowns and nearly three minutes of riding time en route to a 15-6 major decision. Freshman Tate Samuelson remained perfect in his dual career, using a late takedown in the third to lock up a 4-0 decision over Air Force's Jake Thompson in the 184-pound match. With the win, Samuelson pushed his record to 4-0 in duals. Cale Davidson was able to pick up his second bonus-point win in the last three matches with a quick, 16-0, technical fall over Casey Jumps. Davidson notched takedowns in the first and second period, following both up with back points on the way to the shutout in just over four minutes. It marked the first tech of Davidson's rookie season. Heavyweight Brian Andrews extended the Wyoming lead to 23-0 in a 6-1 handling of Kayne Hutchison. With a first-period takedown and an escape to open the second, Andrews led, 3-0, heading to the final frame. The Cowboy was able to run up the riding time to open the third, before releasing Hutchison and taking him right back down for the score. With the dual coming back around to the top of the Cowboy lineup at 125 pounds, Cole Verner recorded seven-straight points in his bout to avenge his Cowboy Open loss to Sidney Flores in a 7-2 win. Flores scored on a danger call in the first period, riding Verner out into the second. With Flores choosing down in the second, Verner tied the match back up at two with a two-point nearfall and full-period ride. Choosing neutral, Verner recorded a takedown with 21 seconds to go in the bout and took Flores to his back for another couple of nearfall points. At 133, Montorie Bridges used a flurry of points in the third period to secure a 14-5 major decision over Tony DeCesare. Leading, 4-2, heading into the final frame, Bridges scored a reversal and three takedowns in the last two minutes to push the Pokes to a 30-0 lead. It marked the sixth major of the season for Bridges, who moved to 21-7 on the year. After the Falcons got on the board with a 4-1 win over Cowboy Andrew Gomez at 141 pounds, Wyoming finished strong with a Jaron Jensen win over Tommy Stager. Jensen racked up takedowns in the first and second periods, before recording two in the third to pick up the 10-3 decision. It marked his fourth-straight win. Results: 157: Dewey Krueger dec. OREM, Utah -- Winning seven matches, including four by bonus points, the Fresno State Wrestling team knocked off No. 23 Utah Valley, 26-10 on Friday evening at Lockhart Arena. With the win, Fresno State improves to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in Big 12 duals this season while knocking off its first nationally-ranked opponent in its two seasons since returning to the mat as a program. "It was a good team win," said head coach Troy Steiner of the 'Dogs performance. "There were some battles in there in a lot of weights and we won some and we lost some, but I really like our intensity and came out firing and on the attack and that is what it is going to take to beat teams," added Steiner. How It Happened Starting the dual at 125 pounds, redshirt freshman Robert Garcia IV got the 'Dogs winning ways started early with an 11-3 major decision over UVU senior Josh Jensen. The Selma native secured a pair of first period takedowns for a 4-1 lead and added a takedown in the second period and two more in the third and a point for riding time to earn his second major decision of the season. Leading 4-0 in the dual, redshirt freshman Gary Joint doubled up the score with a 9-0 major decision over Dylan Gregerson to push the 'Dogs ahead 8-0. Joint tallied three takedowns, an escape, a stalling point and riding time to notch only his fourth shutout of the season. Utah Valley (7-7, 0-1 B12) got on the scoreboard at 141 pounds with a 16-0 technical by No. 8 Matt Findlay over the 'Dogs Chris Deloza to cut the lead to 8-5. Making his return to his former school, redshirt junior 149-pounder Khristian Olivas, who attended Utah Valley as a freshman in 2015-16, topped the Wolverines' Landon Knutzen, 14-8 to give the 'Dogs a 11-5 lead. Olivas jumped out to a 8-1 lead after the first period with a pair of takedowns and a four-point near fall as he cruised to his 14th win of the year. Moving to 157 pounds, redshirt junior Isaiah Hokit made his first dual meet appearance since the Battle on the Midway in November as he made quick work of Spencer Heywood with a 19-6 major decision recording seven takedowns in the match. Heading into intermission leading 15-5, Utah Valley won its second match of the dual at 165 pounds as No. 9 Demetrius Romero topped the 'Dogs Brandon Martino, 7-5. Martino fought tough the entire match getting a takedown near the end of the match, but came up just short. The 'Dogs got back on the winning side of the scoreboard at 174 pounds as redshirt junior Dominic Kincaid topped Koy Wilkinson, 8-4 behind three takedowns, an escape and a riding time point. The Wolverines got their final win of the dual at 184 pounds as redshirt senior WIll Sumner upset the Bulldogs' Jackson Hemauer, 6-2 using a third period four-point near fall to close the dual to 18-11 in favor of the 'Dogs. With the final two matches both featuring ranked wrestlers, the 197 pound match was a highlight of the night as junior and No. 16 Josh Hokit recorded a fall of No. 11 Tanner Orndorff in 6:38 as the Bulldog used Orndorff's own takedown attempt to roll through and put the UVU redshirt junior on his back. WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The 18th-ranked Purdue wrestling team made it nine straight over Indiana, beating the Hoosiers 18-11 at Mackey Arena on Friday to open #BeatIU weekend. The Boilermakers won three weights early in the dual and closed with three wins in the upper weights to lift their record to 5-4, 2-1 Big Ten. IU dropped to 4-8, 1-4 Big Ten. Purdue extended its longest winning streak in the series to nine, picking up its sixth win on its home mat during the streak. The nine straight wins in the series is the longest streak for either team since the Hoosiers won 10 straight, spanning from Jan. 11, 1976, to Feb. 8, 1983. It was the third consecutive season the Boilermakers have wrestled a dual at Mackey, with IU going down in two of three of those duals. Devin Schroder set the tone with a 7-2 showing against Liam Cronin at 125 pounds. "I love starting off the dual with me, I always believe in myself," Schroder said. "Once I get that first win the crowd is pumped, momentum goes to the team for the rest of the dual." The redshirt sophomore recorded a takedown in the first and third periods, to go along with an escape in the second, a penalty point in the third and 2:40 of riding time. The win lifted Schroder to 15-6. "Like coach says, you just have to keep scoring points," Schroder said. "Whatever the score is, you just have to keep building. We use these as good stepping-stones. The Big Ten is always tough, with tough opponents ahead. [We will] try to enjoy the win and get ready to get back and get to working for future opponents." The two ensuing bouts saw No. 19 Ben Thornton and Nate Limmex notch decisions at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively. Thornton (14-3) blanked IU's Garrett Pepple 5-0 for his eighth shutout of the season. A takedown in the second period sealed the deal for a 5-4 Limmex decision of Kyle Luigs. During the 141-pound match, Indiana was deducted one team point for control of mat. The middleweights went the Hoosiers' way, putting the dual at 9-8 in favor of Purdue heading into 174 pounds. No. 14 Dylan Lydy was the first of three straight wins for the Boilermakers. Lydy pushed his record to 17-4 after he disposed of Jacob Covaciu 5-2. A 3-2 decision by Max Lyon (15-7) over Norman Conley followed at 184 pounds, with the win clinching the dual for Purdue. No. 12 Christian Brunner beat Jake Kleimola by turning in a 5-1 decision. The 197-pounder and two-time NCAA qualifier improved to 13-5 with the win. With a winter storm rolling in, Purdue immediately hit the road after the win over Indiana bound for Ann Arbor, Michigan, for its first double-dual weekend of the Big Ten season. The Boilermakers are set to face the sixth-ranked Wolverines at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday at Cliff Keen Arena. U-M (7-0, 3-0 B1G) also defeated its in-state rival Friday, cruising past Michigan State 30-10 in East Lansing. Results: 125 / Devin Schroder (Purdue) def. DeSanto knocks off Suriano as Iowa rolls to victory over Rutgers
InterMat Staff posted an article in Big 10
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The fourth-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team won eight-of-10 matches to defeat No. 20 Rutgers, 30-6, on Friday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa scored bonus points in three wins, including a pair of first-period falls by Spencer Lee and Alex Marinelli, but it was a decision at 133 pounds that stole the show. Eighth-ranked Austin DeSanto scored a takedown with 1.5 seconds left in the third period to rally past No. 3 Nick Suriano, 6-4, at 133 pounds. DeSanto trailed 3-0 in the second before chipping away with consecutive escapes and two stalling points to grab a 4-3 lead. With Suriano owning over one minute of riding time, the match looked destined for sudden victory, but DeSanto continued to apply pressure and secured the winning takedown on the edge of the mat in the final seconds. "I got to my tie and he blocked me off with his fingers when we were going at it," DeSanto said. "Once I got that tie, I hit it. It kind of surprised me a bit because I need to fire more shots. I cut that corner, and I've really been working on that finish." That finish gave DeSanto his second straight win over a previous NCAA finalist (he defeated sixth-ranked Ethan Lizak on Jan. 13 at Minnesota). "We've served a notice now and the cat is out of the bag," said Iowa head coach Tom Brands. "It's no secret that we're getting better and can go seven minutes." DeSanto used every second of his seven minute match. The opening act, 125-pounder Spencer Lee, used just 38 seconds of his mat time. Lee led 6-0 15 seconds into the match before turning a second tilt into his second fall of the season, this one in a career-best 38 seconds. "I get ready for every match like it's the biggest match in the world," Lee said. "I can do that and I will continue to do that." That fall was the first of two Iowa pins and the first of three bonus-point wins. Marinelli scored three takedowns in 70 seconds before securing a fall at 165 in 2:17. It was his second straight pin, and his career-high sixth of the season. Sam Stoll looked strong while making his fourth appearance of the season. The senior All-American, ranked No. 3 at 285, scored a takedown in each period to win by 10-0 major decision. Iowa won five matches by decision, including Kaleb Young's 5-2 win against No. 14 John Van Brill. It was Iowa's second win of the night against a ranked opponent. In the only other match featuring ranked opponents, No. 12 Pat Lugo dropped an overtime decision to No. 2 Anthony Ashnault, 3-1. It was Lugo's sixth loss of the season, all by three points or fewer, and three of them to the top two ranked wrestlers in the country. "Lugo is feeling better out there and he's becoming more seasoned," Brands said. "He's adjusted to Iowa and loves it, but now is the time to start to think about these close matches and how to put them away." The Hawkeyes improved to 5-0 at home, 8-0 overall, and 3-0 in the Big Ten. The 24-point margin of victory matches the largest in series history against Rutgers. UP NEXT Iowa wrestles at Illinois on Friday, Jan. 25, and at Northwestern on Sunday, Jan. 27. Iowa's dual at Illinois is televised live on BTN. NOTABLES Spencer Lee's fall in 0:38 was the fastest of his career. Austin DeSanto has consecutive wins over top six opponents. Young improved to 5-1 against ranked opponents. Alex Marinelli recorded his team-high sixth pin. Sam Stoll made his fourth appearance of the season and improved to 4-0. Iowa improved to 5-0 all-time against Rutgers. The 24-point win matches the largest margin of victory in the series (33-9, 2010). MADISON, Wisc. -- Northwestern pulled off an impressive upset of No. 11 Wisconsin Friday night, taking down the Badgers, 25-18, on their home mat. NU was victorious in six of the ten bouts, winning each of the first two as well as the last two to seal the result. The win was the second of the season over a top-15 squad for the 'Cats after defeating No. 10 Virginia Tech in November. The Wildcats took a quick 6-0 lead after No. 1 Sebastian Rivera won by forfeit at 125, with the redshirt sophomore improving to a perfect 16-0 on the campaign. Colin Valdiviez followed it up with a dominant performance against Jens Lantz, winning by major decision to put Northwestern up 10-0 after two matches. After a pair of wins for the hosts, No. 3 Ryan Deakin re-upped the advantage for Chicago's Big Ten Team with a dismantling of UW's Devin Bahr at 157. Deakin notched a win by technical fall at the buzzer, adding five points to the visitors' cause as they held a 15-7 lead at the midway point of the contest. At 174, redshirt senior Johnny Sebastian came through with another win by bonus points, cruising to a major decision over Patrick Spray. The 'Cats held a one-point lead with just two bouts remaining to decide the match. Zack Chakonis took the mat against Beau Breske at 197 in a tightly-contested and low-scoring affair. A third-period escape and riding time point gave Chakonis a victory via 3-1 decision and, crucially, stretched the team lead to four points going into the final bout. The heavyweight contest featured two ranked grapplers in No. 19 Conan Jennings and No. 9 Trent Hillger. The pair proved evenly matched as the score stood tied, 2-2, after three periods. Neither wrestler was able to move the needle until Jennings finally recorded a point and sealed the victory in the third extra period, giving the Wildcat a 3-2 (TB-1) decision over the highly-ranked Badger. The victory by Jennings also punctuated the first conference win of the season for the Wildcats in the stacked Big Ten Conference, and the second-straight dual victory over Wisconsin. Northwestern defeated the 16th-ranked Badgers by a score of 18-14 in Evanston a year ago. ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio wrestling team (3-3, 1-1 MAC) earned its first Mid-American Conference victory of the 2018-19 season as it toppled Kent State (6-11, 1-3 MAC), 24-12, in the annual grudge match between the two rivals this evening at the Convocation Center. "It's bragging rights for the year," said 22nd year head coach Joel Greenlee of Ohio's win over Kent State. "It's no secret that they don't like us and we don't like them. Bottom line is for the next year, they have to hear it." The matchup began at 197 pounds, and sophomore Aaron Naples (Brunswick, Ohio) tallied a takedown in the first period en route to a 3-0 win by decision over junior Shane Mast. The Golden Flashes grabbed a 6-3 lead, though, when redshirt freshman Spencer Berthold came away with a fall in 1:37 at 285. The Bobcats made sure Kent State's lead was short lived, however, coming away with victories in the ensuing six bouts. Redshirt junior Shakur Laney (Canal Winchester, Ohio) got Ohio's run started with a 10-4 win by decision at 125 over sophomore Jake Ferri that tied the team score at six-all. Laney posted a pair of takedowns in the first period, an escape in the second and two more takedowns in the third. Redshirt sophomore Mario Guillen (Perrysburg, Ohio) and senior Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) then swung momentum in favor of Ohio with a pair of convincing victories at 133 and 141, respectively. Guillen jumped out to a 7-0 advantage with an escape, a takedown and a near fall, then sealed the deal with a third-period takedown. Riding time gave him a 10-1 major decision triumph over junior Tim Rooney. "Last year, I lost that match to that same guy, so I've been looking forward to this dual," said Guillen of facing Rooney. "It felt good to get that win." Kelly was dominant in an 18-3 win by technical fall over sophomore Cory Simpson, piling up six takedowns and earning four more points with a first-period near fall. Redshirt freshman Alec Hagan (Eureka, Mo.) and redshirt junior Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio) made it a 21-6 lead for the Bobcats with back-to-back wins by decision at 149 and 157, respectively. A third-period takedown gave Hagan a 4-3 edge over redshirt freshman Kody Komara. Carson then earned an 11-4 win over sophomore Richard Jackson thanks to four takedowns, two escapes and riding time. Freshman Colt Yinger (Nelsonville, Ohio) then sealed the win for Ohio with a 3-1 overtime victory at 165 over fifth-year Isaac Bast. With the score deadlocked at one after three periods, Yinger produced a takedown to up the Bobcats' point total to 24. Ohio will be back in action again on Sunday (Jan. 20) as it makes the drive south to Charlottesville, Va., to take on Virginia in a 1 p.m. ET matchup at Memorial Gymnasium.
