  2. BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Redshirt sophomore Jarrod Snyder came through when the Roadrunners needed him most on Sunday. With CSU Bakersfield clinging to a 17-10 lead over previously undefeated Stanford with just one bout remaining, Snyder took down Stanford's Haydn Maley in overtime to clinch the match for the `Runners and pick up CSUB's first win over a ranked opponent since they defeated Oregon State on February 7, 2016. Both Snyder and Maley escaped each other's grasp after starting on bottom in the second and third periods, respectively. Snyder scored the match- and dual-winning takedown with just 29 seconds remaining to earn the sudden victory. "That's the biggest college win for Jarrod Snyder," said Rivera. "He won the dual meet for the team and he's been in that position a few times this year. I'm proud of him. I know he's excited about it and I think the big thing for him to realize is this is just a start and he can go so much further." The victory was also the first win over a ranked opponent in Head Coach Manny Rivera's tenure at CSUB and the first time the Roadrunners had beaten Stanford since Dec. 17, 2015. Stanford would win the 125-pound bout to make the final score 20-13. "It's exciting to see guys start to fight harder for their teammates," said Rivera. "I think we won this dual because guys stepped up and were wrestling more for the team than themselves. It's good to focus out there, fight and things we've been preaching. It's nice that they paid off against a ranked opponent." It was redshirt senior Sean Nickell who set the tempo for the day with a dominant technical fall of Anthony Le at 133 pounds. Nickell scored just a takedown in the first period before heating up with a takedown and a four-point nearfall in the second for a commanding 8-0 advantage. He chose top at the start of the third period and needed just 41 seconds to record two more four-point nearfalls for five big team points. From there a couple of unheralded wrestlers took the lead as Carlos Herrera, Jacob Thalin and Bryan Battisto entered their matches under .500, but had their arms raised in triumph at the conclusion of seven minutes of wrestling on Sunday. "Those guys did a great job today," said River. "It was a good win for Jacob. He's fought so hard. It's good that we had some wins to show what we've been working on." Herrera shutout Brandon Kier at 141 pounds via a big second period. The redshirt junior escaped and took down Kier with 51 seconds remaining for 3-0 edge. Herrera would ride him for the rest of the match after Kier chose bottom to start the third period. Thalin had one of the biggest upsets of the day at 165 pounds and started a string of three consecutive Roadrunner victories as he knocked off Dominick Mandarino, who was ranked 16th in the country at 157 pounds. Thalin trailed 3-2 after the first period after both wrestlers scored a takedown and Mandarino added an escape, but the redshirt junior returned the favor in the second as he escaped and took down the Cardinal in the second. Mandarino was only able to must an escaped in the third as Thallin was victorious 5-4. Battisto was first victorious in two out of his three matches this weekend as he knocked off Rico Stormer at 174 pounds. The redshirt senior had a huge first period with a takedown, a four-point nearfall and a penalty point for hands to the face. It was a scoreless second period and Battisto was able to hold off a furious rally by Stormer to win 10-5. CSUB came through in the clutch again at 184 pounds. Dominic Ducharme and Colbey Harland went into overtime and it was Ducharme who earned the winning takedown 25 seconds in sudden victory. Both wrestlers were tied at 1-1 after they each escaped in the second and third periods. It was the Roadrunners first win over the Cardinal in the Icardo Center since Feb. 10, 2013. The `Runners will remain at home next Sunday as they look to make it two straight victories over ranked opponents at 6:00 p.m. CSUB will entertain the Cowboys of Wyoming who are ranked 11th in the nation. 3. Former collegiate wrestlers Ryan Bader and Jake Hager made short of work of their respective rivals at Bellator 214 at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. Saturday night ... while two other fighters with amateur wrestling credentials -- Aaron Pico and A.J. Agazarm -- lost their bouts. Bader KOs Fedor, becomes Bellator's first two-division champ Ryan Bader (Photo/Bellator)Arizona State mat great Ryan Bader won the finals of the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix in just over a half-minute, scoring a knockout of 42-year-old Fedor Emelianenko in the main event at Bellator 214. "Ryan Bader only needed two punches to become the first two-division champion in Bellator MMA history," wrote Sherdog.com. "The first punch to land -- a lead left hook from Bader -- sent 'The Last Emperor' to the canvas instantly. "As the dazed Russian attempted to sit up, Bader tagged his foe with a stiff right hand, essentially ending the contest. Bader landed a couple more hammerfists before referee Mike Beltran was able to intervene just 35 seconds after the bout began." "Bader, the promotion's reigning 205-pound (light-heavyweight) titleholder, became the first simultaneous two-division champion in Bellator history with a first-round knockout of the greatest heavyweight the sport has ever known," according to CBS Sports. After winning the Bellator heavyweight (265-pound) crown, Bader -- a former NCAA All- American wrestler for the Sun Devils -- paid respect to his fallen foe. "I was trying to keep it away [during introductions] but it crept up there that I was fighting Fedor, one of the greatest of all time," Bader said. "It's surreal. I have a ton of respect for him to where he's at and to keep fighting but what a night." With the win, Bader, 35, is now 37-5 in his pro MMA career, and 5-0 in Bellator ... while Emelianenko falls to 38-6 overall, and 2-2 in Bellator. Hager makes winning MMA debut Jake Hager -- an Oklahoma high school state champion wrestler and NCAA All-American heavyweight for the Oklahoma Sooners who made a name for himself in the WWE as Jack Swagger -- came out the winner in the first round of his first appearance for Bellator. "Hager got his chin tested early on as his opponent JW Kiser cracked the former WWE champ with a solid right hand," wrote LowKickMMA.com. "But then Hager instinctively grabbed ahold of Kiser and the fight was essentially over at that point. "The All-American wrestler got Kiser to the ground and delivered some hard elbows that softened Kiser up. Hager worked for a kimura but decided instead on an arm triangle choke." The end for Kiser came at 2:09 of Round One. "I was trying to slow everything down in my mind," Hager said. "Keep control, I wanted to lay on him all day. I knew I was gonna get that big elbow in there, I just had to keep my posture. It was just a matter of time before I got that arm-triangle in there." The 36-year-old Hager is now 1-0 in his MMA/Bellator debut ... while Kiser drops to 0-2 overall, and 0-1 in Bellator. Pico lasts a bit more than a minute in his loss Aaron Pico suffered yet another devastating first-round loss in his young MMA career, as the 22-year old former amateur wrestling phenom fell to Henry Corrales by TKO at 67 seconds of the opening round of their featherweight (145-pound) bout. CBS Sports wrote, "After Corrales was floored early by a right uppercut, the 32-year-old instantly regained his feet and forced Pico into a brawl from the clinch. His short right hand caught Pico flush on the chin and Corrales added a two-punch combo as Pico, who was already unconscious, fell backwards. "Pico, a native of Whittier, California, who was signed by Bellator while still in high school, was considered the greatest prospect in the sport's history when he suffered a shocking upset loss via submission in his 2017 pro debut at New York's Madison Square Garden," CBS continued. "This loss, however, was far more disastrous as Pico's trademark aggressiveness proved to be his undoing." "What's done is done," Corrales said after the bout. "Respect to Pico and all his people in the crowd." Pico is now 4-2 in his pro MMA career (all with Bellator) while Corrales improves to 17-3 overall and 5-3 in Bellator competition. Ex-Buckeye Agazarm loses split decision In a preliminary bout, A.J. Agazarm had his Bellator debut spoiled by another newcomer, Jesse Roberts, in a 160-pound catchweight bout. Here's how Sherdog.com described the match: "A solid sprawl and the ability to land clean straight punches on the feet carried Roberts to a split-decision triumph (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) over the former Ohio State University wrestler. Agazarm, a Gracie-Barra black belt with numerous grappling accolades, was able to take his opponent's back on two occasions but couldn't capitalize enough on the positions to sway the cageside judges." Agazarm is now 0-1 in his overall MMA career and in Bellator, while Roberts is now 1-0 in both MMA and Bellator.
  4. FARGO, N.D. -- North Dakota State University won eight of ten matches in a late season Big 12 conference dual on their way to a 30-7 victory over Northern Colorado. With the win, NDSU improved to 8-5 on the season and evened their Big 12 record at 3-3. The dual got underway at heavyweight. NDSU heavyweight Brandon Metz came into the dual ranked 32nd in the initial NCAA coaches panel rankings and he would take on Robert Winters. Metz was on the attack early and was able to secure an early takedown off of a throw on the edge. Winters would get injured during the action, which allowed Metz to gain his choice. Metz chose down and was able to extend his lead to 3-0 with an escape. Metz would go on to secure another takedown and an escape, on his way to a 6-3 win. 125 pounds was supposed to bring us a matchup of top 20 combatants, as NDSU's Brent Fleetwood, ranked No. 9, and Northern Colorado's Rico Montoya held a No. 17 ranking. Fleetwood was unable to go, so NDSU turned to returning NCAA qualifier Paul Bianchi in his stead. Despite Bianchi's past credentials, this one was all Montoya. Montoya racked up numerous takedowns on his way to a dominating 14-4 win. No. 16 Cam Sykora stepped to the mat to take on Sean Cannon at 133. Sykora was in control from the opening whistle as he used two takedowns and three sets of four-point nearfalls to pick up his team leading eighth tech fall of the year. Christopher Sandoval did his part to get Northern Colorado back on track at 141 pounds, as he used three takedowns to knock off Sawyer Degen. Sandoval was able to dictate the pace and action from neutral for the first two periods. The third period saw Degen pick the top position and while he was unable to get the tying turn, he was able to ride Sandoval out and limit the damage. 149 pounds provided us with an interesting matchup, as former Iowa State NCAA qualifier Dante Rodriguez stepped to the mat for Northern Colorado to take on Jaden Van Maanen. Rodriguez is new to the Northern Colorado lineup, but he came up with fire. The two wound up in an upper body position and Rodriguez comfortably came out on top of the exchange to grab the early lead. Van Maanen got a quick reversal to tie the match up. From there, it was all Van Maanen. Van Maanen would primarily dictate the remainder of the match from the top position. Behind some tough rides, good turns, and two late takedowns, Van Maanen was able to get an impressive 15-4 major decision. Red-hot Luke Weber squared off with Jordan Robison in the bout at 157 pounds. Weber is riding high behind victories over Central Michigan's Logan Parks and No. 11 Talen Rahmani of Pitt. Robison dictated most of the action throughout the first period, but Weber showed impeccable shot defense to ward off all of Robison's attacks. Weber was able to secure his own late first period takedown, and he wouldn't look back. Weber secured two more takedowns, an escape, and a riding time point to win 8-2. No. 20 Andrew Fogarty came out on fire at 165 pounds against Macoy Flanagan. Fogarty dominated from start to finish, as he was able two use two takedowns and a bunch of back points to secure a technical fall in the second period. Lorenzo De La Riva met Trenton Schultz at 174 pounds. De La Riva was able to execute a beautiful low ankle attack in the first minute to grab the early lead. A rideout gave him plenty of riding time as they headed to the second. Schultz would tie the match up with a reversal, which was followed by an escape by De La Riva. De La Riva would follow that up with a takedown and set of nearfall as he secured a 10-2 major decision. The final two bouts brought us our two closest matches of the dual meet. At 184 pounds, that meant Michael Otomo and Dalton Robertson doing battle. Otomo would jump out to a lead in the first minute with a takedown. Robertson was able to escape, but not before Otomo built up his riding time to over a minute, which would be key. With the score 2-1 in the second, Otomo chose neutral. Coach Kish implored Otomo to take more shots, and even yelled, "if you don't shoot, he will beat you!" Otomo was unable to get to his offense and the match headed to the third, where Robertson quickly chose the top position. This was exactly where Coach Nickerson and Northern Colorado wanted to be and where Coach Kish and NDSU didn't want to be. Robertson would ride tough all period and get close to numerous turns, but Otomo was able to fight from turning. Although Robertson controlled the period, Otomo would win 2-1 thanks to the minute plus of riding time he built in the first period preventing Robertson of falling just shy of riding time. Cordell Eaton squared off with No. 19 Jacob Seely to cap the dual off at 197 pounds. Seely controlled the action early on, but was unable to score. The athletes would trade escapes in the second and third periods, but neither was genuinely close to a takedown. To close the third, Eaton took several shots and continued to build his confidence and momentum. The match would head to overtime tied at 1, but with Eaton maintaining the momentum. Eaton was able to fire off an attack and withstand the subsequent scramble to emerge with a big 3-1 victory. NDSU returns to action at home against Utah Valley on Feb. 1. 5. DEKALB, Ill. -- The Ohio wrestling team (4-4, 2-1 MAC) erased a 12-point deficit by winning the final four bouts for a thrilling 21-18 road victory over Mid-American Conference foe Northern Illinois (5-8, 1-4 MAC) today at NIU'S Convocation Center. The Huskies led the Bobcats, 18-6, through the first six weight classes, with redshirt sophomore Kenny Moore winning in a 7-1 sudden victory at 165 pounds, redshirt freshman Brit Wilson coming away with a pin in 2:04 at 165, redshirt freshman Will Feldkamp winning by fall in 49 seconds at 184 and redshirt junior Caleb Gossett winning by a 6-4 decision at 285. Redshirt sophomore Mario Guillen (Perrysburg, Ohio) cut Ohio's deficit to six points with a 3-1 sudden victory over redshirt senior Alijah Jeffery at 133. Guillen is now 8-1 on the year -- including a 3-0 mark in MAC matches. The match opened at 157, with redshirt junior Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio) picking up a 3-2 win by decision over redshirt freshman Mason Kauffman to give the Bobcats the early 3-0 lead. Carson is now 15-5 on the year. Making his Ohio debut, graduate student Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.) provided his new team with its only other victory in the first six bouts, winning by a 3-1 score in sudden victory over redshirt sophomore Max Ihry at 197. 6. STILLWATER -- Cowboy wrestling notched its sixth conference win of the season Sunday afternoon in Gallagher-Iba Arena when it defeated Iowa State, 22-15. The win marked coach John Smith's 421st career dual win, which ties him for the fifth most among NCAA Division I wrestling coaches. It also marks the sixth win for the Cowboys against a ranked opponent on the year. The Pokes took six of 10 bouts from the Cyclones, and in his first match inside GIA in nearly two years, Joe Smith collected a fall at 174 pounds over Marcus Coleman. After notching a single takedown in the first period, Smith turned the Cyclone for the fall in 2:41. "I was excited," coach John Smith said. "We all love pins, and it was exciting for me to watch him get on here. He's been working hard and kind of finding his way right now. It was a good time for him to get things going." Also earning bonus points for the Cowboys was Nick Piccininni, who took a 14-2 major decision from Alex Mackall. After a scoreless first period, the Cowboy took Mackall to the mat and turned him for his 12th dual nearfall this season. Wyatt Sheets fell just short in his Gallagher-Iba debut, dropping a 3-2 decision to Iowa State's Chase Straw. Kaid Brock lost to No. 14 Ian Parker, who was coming off a big win over Oklahoma's Dom Demas. Dakota Geer lost a close decision to sixth-ranked Willie Miklus in the 197-pouind bout, and in the dual finale, Boo Lewallen lost via injury default to No. 12 Jerrett Degen. Jacobe Smith clinched a 9-3 decision over 19th-ranked Sam Colbray at 184 pounds after going up early in the first period, scoring two takedowns. Since bumping up a weight, Smith has gone 2-1 over ranked opponents. At 133 pounds, Daton Fix wrestled his eighth match against a ranked opponent this season and his sixth top-20 foe in the Cowboys' past seven contests. He bounced back from a loss at Pitt and defeated No. 9 Austin Gomez in a 5-4 decision with riding time. Heavyweight Derek White collected his 20th win of the season in a 7-1 decision over the Cyclones' Gannon Gremmel. After dropping his most recent matches at 165 pounds, Andrew Shomers defeated Logan Schumacher, 8-2. Shomers notched two takedowns and a reversal, to maintain the top position long enough to score the riding time point. Results: 157: Chase Straw (ISU) dec. In the next match, true freshman Jevon Parrish (133) trailed 7-1 heading into the third period. He then went on a ferocious rally to cut the deficit to 9-7 after landing a reversal and two takedowns against No. 17 Dylan Duncan. He fell just short of an upset victory as Duncan held on for a 10-7 decision to extend the Illinois lead to 6-0. Hoping to avenge a 6-3 decision loss to Illinois' No. 4 Mike Carr last year in Champaign, No. 19 Chad Red Jr. (141) utilized an acrobatic escape in the third period to force overtime before ultimately falling short, 4-3. After dropping the first three matches of the day to fall behind 9-0, junior Jordan Shearer (149) sparked a Husker turnaround which saw Nebraska claim victories in each of the final seven bouts. Shearer scored the Huskers' first points of the match with a 7-3 decision over Christian Kanzler. The Fargo, N.D., native earned takedowns in both the second and third periods to move to 7-5 on the season (4-3 in duals). Tyler Berger, the No. 2 ranked wrestler in the country at 157 pounds, jolted the crowd to life after he pinned No. 12 Eric Barone in the third period. Berger held a 4-1 advantage before working Barone onto his back midway through the third to record his second pin of the season. Following the pin, Nebraska was penalized one point due to misconduct. "With him [Eric Barone], he's good defensively and knows how to slow guys down," Berger said. "I just had to stay focused, stay disciplined and keep attacking. I could feel him getting tired and I knew I was going to put him away in the third period." His team within striking distance, No. 6 Isaiah White (165) of Nebraska faced off with No. 19 Joey Gunther of Illinois. White remained in control throughout the match, earning both first and third period takedowns to earn a 7-2 decision and put the Huskers on top, 11-9. White won 11 of his past 12 matches. Easton, Pa. native Mikey Labriola, the 9th-ranked 174-pounder in the nation, faced off against Carver James of Illinois. Labriola came out strong, recording three takedowns in the first two periods to jump out to an 8-4 advantage. With the help of a pivotal four-point nearfall in the third period, Labriola outlasted James 16-7. His fourth major decision of the year extended the Huskers lead to 15-9. The most highly anticipated match of the day featured No. 5 Taylor Venz (184) of the Huskers and No. 2 Emery Parker of the Illini in their fourth meeting dating back to last season. The two faced off three times in the 2017-18 season, with Parker taking two of the three bouts. Holding a 5-2 lead in the third period, Venz got Parker on his back and pinned him for a critical victory, much to the delight of the Husker faithful. Venz leads all NU starters with five victories by pinfall and has won two of his last three matches by fall. "I trusted in my training and my skillset enough to where I could just go out there and try to be tougher than he is," Venz said. "I think when you apply that, big things can happen and we saw that today." Nebraska's No. 11 Eric Schultz (197) battled hard with Andre Lee of Illinois until the final whistle, utilizing a late escape paired with a misconduct penalty by Lee to squeak out a 2-1 decision. The final match of the day saw No. 14 David Jensen (285) of Nebraska face-off with Illinois' Deuce Rachal. The pair previously met on Jan. 5 of last season and resulted in Jensen claiming a 7-2 decision. Jensen earned an early takedown in the first period, but Rachal drew within one point courtesy of an escape to close the period. In the second period, Jensen came up big to pin Rachal at 3:32 and subsequently cap off a 30-9 Husker win over Illinois. With the win, the Huskers moves to 9-3 (3-2 B1G) while the Illini dropped to 2-5 (0-4 B1G). NU has now won three out of its four duals at the Devaney Center this season with wins over Northwestern, No. 14 Northern Iowa and now No. 13 Illinois. No. 4 Iowa comes to town next weekend followed by No. 7 Minnesota on Feb. 8 and Stanford on Feb. 23 to close the season. 8. LARAMIE, Wyo. -- The No. 8/11 Wyoming wrestling team earned its eighth-straight win on Sunday afternoon, handling West Virginia in a 33-15 battle in the UniWyo Sports Complex. Along with taking the 125-pound match by forfeit, the Cowboys (12-3, 3-1 Big 12) racked up three falls in the win, putting the Mountaineers away quickly with under hour between the dual's first and last whistles. Wyoming picked up wins in the only two ranked-versus-ranked bouts, and won six of the nine contested bouts on the day. "They were important wins, especially with Big 12 seeding around the corner," head coach Mark Branch said. "Those are going to help put us in the right place in the bracket…I still want to see our guys be more aggressive. There was some frustration there with our guys not opening up as much as they're capable of, but they got important wins. It was frustrating to see a couple of our guys on the wrong side of a couple of pins, but we needed them on the other side and we got them from Tony (Lombardo), Tate (Samuelson) and Sam (Turner), so that was gratifying to see," With their eighth-straight win, the Pokes tie the fourth-longest win streak in program history and longest since the 2012 season. The team also moved to 2-0 all-time against the Mountaineers. West Virginia started the dual with a 6-0 lead, as Zach Moore earned the first-period fall over Cowboy redshirt freshman Jed Loveless at 157; however, the Pokes ran off 15-straight points over the next three bouts. Branson Ashworth got the Cowboys on the board at 165 pounds, dropping No. 19 Nick Kiussis in a 2-0 win. Ashworth earned his 11th-straight victory dating back to December and also picked up his eighth ranked win of the season. The Cowboy senior has earned more ranked wins this season than his previous three combined. At 174, graduate transfer Anthony Lombardo got the start for the Pokes, racking up a takedown and a couple of nearfalls before dropping James Wujek for the fall about 10 seconds before the conclusion of the first period. The win, which would end up giving Wyoming the lead for good, moved Lombardo to 9-3 overall on the year and 2-0 in duals. Freshman Tate Samuelson extended his dual record to 5-0 and earned the first dual pin of his career at 184 pounds. Matched up with Jackson Moomau, Samuelson scored on a takedown less than a minute into the first period before decking Moomau for the pin in 1:50 to put the Pokes up, 15-6. The Mountaineers got back to within three after a Noah Adams pin over Cowboy Cale Davidson, but heavyweight Brian Andrews responded with a 4-0 shutout win over Brandon Ngati to stretch the Wyoming advantage to 18-12. Andrews led, 1-0, heading to the final period, and was able to secure riding time with a full-period ride following a two-point nearfall with five seconds to go. Andrews moved to 25-7 overall and an impressive 12-3 in duals with the victory. Circling back to the top of the lineup, Brock George got his hand raised at 125 pounds, as West Virginia was forced to forfeit the bout. Montorie Bridges earned a big win at 133, dropping No. 14 Matthew Schmitt in a 3-2 win. Bridges led nearly wire to wire, getting a takedown midway through the opening period and not allowing Schmitt an offensive point in the match. Bridges has now won eight-straight matches, and 12 of his 15 dual starts on the year. The win was his sixth over a ranked opponent this season. Redshirt sophomore Sam Turner put an exclamation point on the win for the Pokes, pinning Luke Martin in just over a minute and a half to push Wyoming over the 30-point mark for the dual. The win was Turner's 20th of the season and the fall marked his third of the year. West Virginia closed out the dual with a 16th-ranked Christian Monserrat 8-4 decision over Cowboy Jaron Jensen in the 149-pound bout. The Cowboys will head West next weekend for a pair of Super Bowl Sunday duals in California. The Pokes will open the day at 1 p.m. MT in Fresno with a matchup against the Big 12 rival Bulldogs of Fresno State. The team will then make the trip about an hour and a half south to do battle with CSU-Bakersfield at 7 p.m. MT. 16. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- No. 1 Penn State (9-0, 5-0 B1G) took down home standing Indiana (4-9, 1-5 B1G) to close out a Big Ten road swing through the Hoosier state on Sunday. Penn State downed Indiana 35-9 in Bloomington to remain unbeaten on the year. Penn State won all but one off the contested bouts (giving up a forfeit loss at 133), including one Nittany Lion's first-ever Big Ten dual victory. The dual began at 184 where junior Francisco Bisono (Hauppauge, N.Y.) stepped in at 184 for No. 3 Shakur Rasheed (Coram, N.Y.) for the second time this weekend. Bisono was once again tough but dropped a hard-fought 5-1 decision. Junior Bo Nickal (Allen, Texas), ranked No. 1 at 197, made short work of IU's Jake Kleimola. Nickal turned an early scramble into a cradle and a fast fall, getting the pin at the 0:58 mark to put Penn State up 6-3. Senior Anthony Cassar (Rocky Hill, N.J.), ranked No. 4 at 285, downed Indiana's Fletcher Miller in an 11-5 win, rolling up over 2:00 in riding time to put Penn State up 9-3. Sophomore Devin Schnupp (Lititz, Pa) thrilled the many Lion faithful at the dual by picking up his first Big Ten dual meet victory in a 5-2 win over Indiana's Liam Cronin. True freshman Roman Bravo-Young (Tucson, Ariz.) was injured in the first period of his match at Purdue Friday night and did not wrestle. Indiana's Garrett Pepple won by forfeit at the weight and Penn State led 12-9 at intermission. Sophomore Nick Lee (Evansville, Ind.), ranked No. 7 at 141, got Penn State started on the right foot in the second half. He posted a 4-0 takedown edge in front of many home-state fans to roll to a 13-3 major over Kyle Luigs. Redshirt freshman Jarod Verkleeren (Greensburg, Pa.) once again stepped in for No. 11 Brady Berger (Mantorville, Minn.) at 149 and notched a 6-4 win over Fernie Silva to give the Lions a 19-9 lead. Senior Jason Nolf (Yatesboro, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 157, picked up his second first period of the weekend with a fall over Breyden Bailey at the 2:46 mark. The fall was the 56th of Nolf's career. Junior Vincenzo Joseph (Pittsburgh, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 165, also picked up his second pin of the weekend. The Lion got his tenth pin of the year with a fall over Bryce Martin at the 1:20 mark. Junior Mark Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.), ranked No. 1 at 174, closed out the dual with a dominating 12-4 major over IU's Jake Covaciu. Penn State won eight of ten bouts (and eight of nine contested) to roll to the 35-9 dual meet victory. Penn State dominated the dual, rolling up a 21-3 takedown advantage. The Nittany Lions grabbed 11 bonus points off three pins (Nickal, Nolf, Joseph) and two majors (Lee, Hall). Nickal's pin was his 11th this year and the 52nd of his career. Nolf has 11 this year and 56 for his career. Joseph's pin was his tenth of the season. The Nittany Lions have now won 54-straight dual meets dating back to the end of the 2014-15 season. Sanderson's Lions won their last dual of that campaign, went 16-0 in 2015-16, went 14-0 in 2016-17 and went 14-0 in 2017-18. Penn State is now 9-0 overall, 5-0 in Big Ten action, while Indiana falls to 4-9, 1-5 B1G. Conley scored first, using a strong high double to take Bisono down to an early 2-0 lead. Conley maintained control for the next minute before Bisono escaped to a 2-1 score. Bisono nearly connected on a single leg with 1:00 left in the period but Conley was able to counter, getting his second takedown to lead 4-1. Bisono was unable to escape and trailed 4-1 after one. Conley chose down to start the second period. Bisono controlled the action from the top position, however, working Conley's riding time down below 1:00. Bisono continued with his strong ride for the remainder of the period, while still trailing 4-1, he completely wiped out Conley's time edge. Bisono chose down to start the third period but Conley was strong on top. The Hoosier controlled Bisono long enough to work his riding time edge back over the 1:00 mark. Conley finished the bout on top and, with 1:58 riding time, posted the 5-1 win. 197: Senior Bo Nickal (Allen, Texas), ranked No. 1 at 197, met Indiana's Jake Kleimola. Nickal controlled the action in the center circle, forcing a scramble that allowed him to work his way into a takedown. After a second or two of adjustment, Nickal deftly locked up a cradle and notched the fast fall at the 0:58 mark. The pin was Nickal's 11th of the year and the 52nd of his career. 285: Senior Anthony Cassar (Rocky Hill, N.J.), ranked No. 4 at 285, took on senior Fletcher Miller. Cassar worked the middle of the mat against the Hoosier big man and bulled through a nice high shot for his first takedown at the 1:52 mark. Miller escaped after a short ride and action resumed neutral with Cassar leading 2-1. Cassar stepped back from a slight Miller shot and then zipped in for a low shot to Miller's left ankle, finishing off the takedown to lead 4-1. He rode Miller out and carried that lead, with :57 in riding time, into the second period. Miller chose down to start the second period and escaped to a 4-2 score. Cassar blew through a high shot at Miller's waist for a third takedown and led 6-2 with 1:00 left in the middle period. The Lion senior worked for a turning combination but Miller was able to keep his stomach flat to the mat for the rest of the period. Leading 6-2 with over 2:00 in time, Cassar chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 7-2 lead. He continued to press the pace, forcing Miller backwards before connecting on another strong double leg at the 1:00 mark, upping his lead to 9-2 with a clinched riding time point. Miller escaped with :20 left and then managed a late takedown to keep Cassar from notching the major. Cassar added a late escape and the riding time point (2:40) and rolled to the 11-5 win. 125: Sophomore Devin Schnupp (Lititz, Pa.) met Liam Cronin. The duo battled evenly in the middle of the mat over the first minute-plus. Schnupp took a slight low single at the 1:20 mark but Cronin was able to step back from the Lion's efforts. Schnupp looked to control the tempo, taking a handful of shots over the final 1:30 but Cronin's defense was strong. Tied 0-0 after one, Schnupp chose down to start the second period. The Lion sophomore tried to roll out of control but action moved out of bounds, forcing a reset with 1:22 left in the period. The Lion sophomore sued the same move at the 1:00 mark, forcing a scramble that ended in a Schnupp reversal and a 2-0 lead at the :25 mark. He also picked up a point on a Cronin locked hands during the scramble and led 3-0 with :15 on the clock. Trailing 3-0, Cronin chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 3-1 score. Schnupp continued to shoot, forcing a scramble in front of the Hoosier bench that ended with the Lion sophomore picking up a takedown to lead 5-1. Cronin rolled out of Schnupp's control on the reset and the Lion led 5-2 with :35 on the clock. The Lion sophomore staved off a late Cronin flurry of shots and walked away with his first Big Ten dual victory, a 5-2 decision. 133: True freshman Roman Bravo-Young (Tucson, Ariz.), ranked No. 13 at 133, suffered a first period injury two nights earlier in the road trip at Purdue and did not wrestle. Indiana's Garrett Pepple got the forfeit victory (not a loss for Bravo-Young). 141: Sophomore Nick Lee (Evansville, Ind.), ranked No. 7 at 141, took on Hoosier Kyle Luigs. Lee worked Luig's shoulders down early in the bout and finished with a low single to a takedown and a 2-1 lead at the 2:30 mark. He quickly added a second takedown and led 4-2 before a minute had passed. Lee fought through Luig's defense for a third takedown wit 1:00 on the clock and began looking to turn the Hoosier. Lee finished on top and led 6-2 with 1:19 in riding time after one. Luigs chose down to start the second period and Lee controlled the action once again. The Lion sophomore clinched the riding time point with a full second period rideout and led 6-2 with 3:19 in time after two. Lee chose down to start the third period and quickly reversed Luigs to up his lead to 8-3. He immediately took Luigs down again and turned him for two back points with 1:00 on the clock. Leading 12-3, Lee finished on top with 4:45 of riding time to roll to a 13-3 major. 149: Redshirt freshman Jarod Verkleeren (Greensburg, Pa.) once again got the nod at 149 for No. 11 Brady Berge (Mantorville, Minn.) and took on Fernie Silva. Silva connected on a quick shot off the whistle that Verkleeren was able to step away form. The Lion freshman worked for shoulder control on the edge of the mat but Silva was able to keep the bout scoreless midway through the opening period. Verkleeren took a high single with 1:20 left and tripped Silva to the mat to take a 2-1 lead. The period finished neutral and Verkleeren led by one after one. Silva chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 2-2 tie. He then worked his way behind Verkleeren for a takedown and a 4-3 lead after a quick Lion escape with 1:30 on the clock. The early period flurry was the only scoring of the middle stanza and Verkleeren trailed 4-3 after two. The Lion chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 4-4 tie. Verkleeren looked to counter Silva's shots by controlling his shoulders off the move, but Silva was able to fight off each Lion counter effort. Verkleeren connected on a solid single with :30 left and steadily worked his way to a takedown at the :18 mark to take a 6-4 lead. Verkleeren finished with a rideout and posted the 6-4 win. 157: Senior Jason Nolf (Yatesboro, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 157, took on Breyden Bailey. As he did two nights earlier at Purdue, Nolf moved in quickly. The Lion tripped Bailey to the mat :40 into the bout and finished off the takedown for an early 2-0 lead. Nolf controlled the action off a resets and moved himself into position to turn Bailey's shoulders to the mat for four near fall points and a 6-0 lead. Nolf tried another turn, but Bailey was able to scramble out of trouble. Nolf's offense was relentless as he quickly tripped the Hoosier to the mat for a second takedown and an 8-1 lead. Nolf cut Bailey loose at the :25 mark and then quickly locked his shoulders, tossed him to the mat, and picked up his second first period pin of the weekend, this one at the 2:46 mark. 165: Senior Vincenzo Joseph (Pittsburgh, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 165, faced senior Bryce Martin. Joseph scored quickly, taking Martin down to lead 2-0 less than :15 into the bout. He worked for a turning combination on the reset and locked up a cradle with 1:45 to wrestle. The Lion needed little time after that, getting his second pin of the weekend at the 1:23 mark. 174: Junior Mark Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.), ranked No. 1 at 174, battled Hoosier Jake Covaciu. Covaciu took an early shot and gained control of Hall's ankle, but the Lion seamlessly rolled though the move and took a 2-1 lead with a sweet counter takedown. Hall paced the middle of the mat for the next minute and nearly connected on a high single with :20 on the clock. Covaciu was able to defend the effort and the bout moved to the second period with Hall leading 2-1. Hall chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 3-1 lead. Hall worked the center of the mat, forcing Covaciu into a stall before taking him down for a 5-1 lead with :40 left in the period. Hall finished off the period with a rideout and led 5-1 with :50 in time after two. Covaciu chose down to start the third period and escaped to a 5-2 score. Hall fought off a Covaciu shot and forced a reset with :57 left to wrestle. He then skipped behind the Hoosier for another takedown and a 7-3 lead after cutting him loose with :45 on the clock. Hall secured the major with two takedowns in the final :25 seconds and, with 1:20 in riding time, posted the 12-4 major.

  19. KRANOYARSK, Russia -- For many years, the Ivan Yariguin Grand Prix has been the most prominent Open freestyle tournament in the world. Now, decades after the United States began attending this prestigious event, the U.S. has a three-time Yariguin champion. 2018 World bronze medalist Tamyra Mensah-Stock (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC) calmly stepped on the raised mat in the Yariguin Grand Prix finals for the third straight year. Her opponent in the 72 kg finals was one of the top young stars from the World champion Japanese team, two-time cadet world champion Yuka Kagami. Mensah-Stock struck first, scoring a takedown for a 2-0 lead. She got in on another leg attack, and after a slight scramble, came out on top, forcing Kagami to her back near the edge of the mat. Kagami fought hard, trying to get off her back, but Mensah-Stock had most of the period and patiently adjusted the hold until the referees slapped the mat at the 2:43 mark. With a big smile on her face, Mensah-Stock had her hand raised in victory as she made American wrestling history. Read complete story on TheMat …

  21. BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- In front of a capacity crowd inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall, No. 24 Lehigh scored bonus points in the final three bouts of the night to rally past No. 23 Arizona State 23-13 Saturday evening. The Mountain Hawks trailed 13-9 after seven bouts but senior Ryan Preisch tied the dual with a major decision at 184 and sophomore Chris Weiler put Lehigh back in front with a third period pin at 197. Sophomore heavyweight Jordan Wood added a major decision victory to clinch Lehigh's sixth consecutive dual win. "We knew we had to win some of those lower ones to compete," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. "The win at 157 was huge. We knew we were favored in those last three weights and those guys went out and did a nice job." Lehigh won six of the 10 bouts overall, scoring bonus points in just those final three, as the Mountain Hawks move to 6-7 on the dual season. The first six bouts of the dual were all tightly contested, with two of the six decided by a single point and two others decided by just two. Freshman Luke Resnick fell 3-2 to Brandon Courtney in the opening bout at 125 by way of a third period takedown, but back-to-back 4-2 decisions from sophomore Brandon Paetzell at 133 and junior Ryan Pomrinca at 141 put Lehigh in front 6-3. Paetzell rode out the second period but needed a third period takedown to knock off Josh Kramer, while Pomrinca used a first period takedown, plus an escape and riding time to top Cory Crooks. Arizona State (4-8) pulled even at 6-6 after Josh Maruca knocked off senior Cortlandt Schuyler 7-2 at 149, snapping Schuyler's five bout winning streak. The Mountain Hawks got a big boost going into intermission with a late 6-1 decision by freshman Josh Humphreys over 13th-ranked Christian Pagdilao at 157. Humphreys was ridden out in the second period and trailed on riding time advantage late in the third period when he put Pagdilao in danger after a shot and worked his way into a takedown and four point near fall in the final seconds. "That was a great match," Santoro said. "Pagdilao's a really good kid. To find a way to win at the end. Those are big moments, because for a young guy you have to find ways to win matches like that. You're going to need those at the national tournament and you have to find a way to go get it. "The Humphreys win really ignited the team," Santoro continued. "I think they saw that when you keep wrestling good things happen. That's the thing with wrestling. It's never over. Josh has done what he's done all year which is keep wrestling." Lehigh just missed another big win coming out of intermission as senior Gordon Wolf came up just one point short against fifth-ranked Josh Shields at 165. Wolf scored the first takedown in the first period and after trading three reversals, and then a late Wolf escape, the Lehigh senior led 5-4 after one. Wolf led 6-5 early in the third but Shields scored a go ahead takedown and kept Wolf down to win 7-6. The Sun Devils opened up a four-point lead with a major decision at 174 as second-ranked and defending NCAA champion Zahid Valencia scored late to cement a 12-4 win over seventh-ranked junior Jordan Kutler. Preisch pulled Lehigh even with a 10-0 major decision over Jacen Petersen. He scored a first period takedown and turned Petersen for four near fall at the end of the period and added an escape and takedown in the second period plus riding time. With the dual tied 13-13 after eight bouts, Weiler took the mat against Austyn Harris. Weiler opened the scoring with a second period reversal and locked up a cradle before losing control before he could turn Harris. Leading 2-1 in the third, Weiler locked up a cradle and turned Harris for four near fall, then locked up another cradle, triggering an eruption of the crowd of 2,085 with the fall at the 6:06 mark. "We're working on getting Chris bigger," Santoro said. "He went through the same thing last year. He did a good job tonight of making adjustments. He couldn't just dive in there on a leg. He won it on top and that's where he's good." Wood capped the dual by picking up five takedowns, including one late to secure a 12-4 major decision over Brady Daniel. Lehigh has now won five straight duals against the Sun Devils to take a 6-2 lead in the all-time series. The Mountain Hawks return to the mats on Sunday when they host No. 12 Virginia Tech with match time set for 2 p.m. from Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Tickets can be purchased online at LehighTickets.com or at the Grace Hall ticket office prior to the match. The 2018-19 Lehigh wrestling season is presented by the Historic Hotel Bethlehem. After Virginia's No. 5 Jack Mueller won via major decision against Joe Heilmann, the Tar Heels responded with three straight majors to take command of the team score. Things started with redshirt senior Gary Wayne Harding, who beat UVA's Louie Hayes in a dominant 9-0 match at 133 pounds. Chip Ness carried Carolina's momentum against Chance McClure at 184 pounds. Ness began the rivalry with a takedown in the first period, but McClure kept things tight through the final seconds. It was a 3-1 match through the middle of the third period, but a late Ness takedown locked up riding time for a 6-1 decision. The All-American from Duluth, Georgia, is now 11-0 in his last 11 matches in Chapel Hill. True freshman Brandon Whitman made his UNC debut at 197 pounds, dropping a hard-fought 7-2 match against Virginia's No. 8 Jay Aiello. Whitman scored the match's first points with a takedown in the first 20 seconds, but Aiello stormed back for the win. NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- Casey Cobb (So / Nampa, Idaho), Jared Prince (Jr/Safety Harbor, Fla.), Quentin Hovis (So/Poway, Calif.), Tanner Skidgel (So/Tulsa, Okla.) and Anthony Cable (Sr/Hughesville, Md.) each won individual titles to lead the Navy wrestling team to the 2019 All-Academy Championship crown Saturday at Plumley Armory in Northfield, Vt. It marked the Mids' 15th overall All-Academy Championship victory and their second in a row. Navy (115.5) won the team crown by 16 points over second-place Air Force (99.5), who had two wrestlers win individual titles. Army also had two individual titles winners and finished third with 72.5 points, followed by The Citadel (56.5), VMI (35.0), Coast Guard (14.5), Merchant Marine (2.5) and Norwich (1.0). VMI's Neal Richards was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler after winning the 174-pound crown. "I'm incredibly proud of the 10 guys who represented the Navy wrestling program today," said fifth-year Navy head coach Joel Sharratt. "In team tournaments it's imperative that every athlete contribute. The team came together and every single athlete scored big points to lead us to a TEAM victory. We showed great support for one another throughout the day as the team constantly filled up the corner in support of one another for every round and every bout. "The transition from dual meets to a tournament format was a test of fortitude for these guys and they did a very good job of focusing on one match at a time and one point at a time." The Highlights • Navy has been the dominant team, winning 15 of the 25 championships including 12 of the last 16. • The Mids have won 98 individual crowns in All-Academy Championship history, including 72 of the 160 titles over the last 16 years. • The Mids won the team title in 1995, `97, `99, `04, `05, `06, `07, `09, '10, '11, '12, '13, '14, '18 and '19, while they claimed five or more individual titles in 1997, `99, `04, `05, `07, `08, '10, '11, '13, '17, '18 and '19. • Four of the five Mids who claimed individual titles were first-time All-Academy Championship winners - Casey Cobb (133), Quentin Hovis (157), Tanner Skidgel (165) and Anthony Cable (184). • Junior Jared Prince (149) earned his second All-Academy Championship in as many appearances. He was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler as a freshman in 2017, where he won the 141-pound title. He trails 14th-place Aaron Kalil (2009-12) by just one win. More From Coach Sharratt • As a coach it is rewarding to see your athletes hit major milestones in their careers. Nick Gil being recognized for his 100th career win made that round special. Ranking among the program's all-time top 16 in wins is an honor and doing it as a three-year starter is very impressive. • Casey Cobb was a hammer this weekend and again delivered consistent performances against high-level opponents. He is also showing improvement every week and becoming a threat in multiple positions. • Jared Prince wrestled a smart match in the finals against a unorthodox competitor who came out to wrestle him tough and smart. Jared made great match adjustments and showed the competitive fire he has. He is very exciting and always enjoyable for fans to watch and our team rallies behind his attitude and effort. • Quentin Hovis stepped up his game this weekend and won matches over opposing athletes well ahead of him in seeding and in the NCAA Coaches Rankings. This is a big step for him in advancing towards his personal goals and our team goals. • Tanner Skidgel was sharp in his performance throughout the day and he is getting better every week. He is both athletic and skilled and it was good to see him recognized in this week's NCAA Coaches Rankings. I expect to see continued improvement from him over the next six weeks. • Anthony Cable wrestled an outstanding event and I am proud to see him winning this championship at such a special event. He wrestled well and knows he left some points off the board and is committed to improving to get where he wants to be and where we need him to be. • I was very proud to see Josh Roetman's resilient effort after dropping a tough bout in the semifinals. He is a warrior who showed fortitude to reengage and overcome when things didn't go as expected. What's Ahead • The Midshipmen return to dual action on on Friday when they play host to Drexel. 24. HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Back-to-back pins by Zach Hartman (157) and D.J. Hollingshead (165), and a clutch major decision by Drew Phipps (197), propelled the Bucknell wrestling team to a 22-18 comeback victory at Hofstra on Saturday night. The Bison (5-6, 3-3 EIWA) flipped a 12-0 deficit into an 18-12 advantage thanks to Hartman and Hollingshead's pins and a Pride forfeit at 174 pounds. After Trey Rogers (184) drew Hofstra (4-9, 0-3 EIWA) back within three points with a decision, Phipps sealed Bucknell's comeback victory with a decisive 11-3 major decision over Nezar Haddad. The Pride raced out to an early 12-0 lead, winning the first four bouts by decision. Notably, at 125 pounds, Dylan Ryder handed Jakob Campbell his first dual loss of the season, edging the sophomore by a 4-0 margin; Campbell moved to 7-1 in dual action on the season. Then, at 133 pounds, Jacob Martin used a takedown in the second sudden victory period to slip past David Campbell, 4-2. Hartman cut the Bison's deficit in half by pinning Chris Mauriello in 5:28. Hartman has now pinned four of his past five opponents, bringing his season total to a team-best seven. The freshman, who is currently ranked as high as eighth nationally, improved to 18-4 on the season, which includes a 14-0 mark against unranked opponents. Hollingshead needed just 31 seconds to even the score at 12-12. His pin of Ricky Stamm was his first since Bucknell's season-opening victory over VMI. After Hofstra forfeited at 174 pounds, the Bison then took their first lead of the night. Rogers pulled the Pride back within three, at 18-15, with a 5-3 decision over Jacob Ferreira, a freshman competing in just his second dual. Needing at least a major decision to put the dual out of reach entering the heavyweight bout, Phipps delivered; the junior captain registered five takedowns, including two in the third period, and built up nearly two minutes of riding time advantage. The Bison, who earlier on Saturday blanked Sacred Heart, 40-0, next host North Carolina on Friday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.; that Sojka Pavilion dual, which is presented by Geisinger, Fairfield Auto Group and Giant, will be streamed live on FloWrestling.
