  2. BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- In a tightly-contested dual that came down to overtime in the final bout, Lehigh knocked off No. 7 Cornell 19-16 in the annual Billy Sheridan Memorial Dual in front of 1,820 Saturday inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The Mountain Hawks and Big Red were knotted at 16-16 through nine bouts. A takedown 37 seconds into sudden victory by senior Cortlandt Schuyler over Jonathan Furnas at 149, gave Lehigh the victory and sent the Mountain Hawks and their fans into celebration. Schuyler's 3-1, sudden victory win clinched Lehigh's first win over Cornell since 2016 and its first in Bethlehem since 2011. "I'm really happy for Cortlandt," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. "He battled a really good kid there. It came down to overtime. It doesn't really get more dramatic than that. But this was a total team effort. Every single point counted in this match. Everybody fought." The teams split the 10 bouts 5-5 with the bonus points scored in the opening bout ultimately providing the difference. The dual began at 157 with freshman Josh Humphreys facing Fredy Stroker. Humphreys scored early on a low single leg shot and then used a power half nelson to turn Stroker for two points to go up 4-0 before Stroker called for injury time. Stroker was unable to continue due to his injury and the injury default win at 1:39 gave Lehigh a 6-0 lead. Both teams were missing several projected starters and Lehigh took advantage at the next two weights to build a 13-0 lead after three bouts. Senior Gordon Wolf started fast with three first period takedowns in a 10-6 win over Adam Santoro at 165, while junior Jordan Kutler opened up after a scoreless first period at 174, scoring five takedowns over the final two periods in a 13-4 major decision over Andrew Berreyesa. Cornell claimed wins at 184 and 197 to cut Lehigh's lead to 13-6 at intermission. Tenth-ranked Max Dean topped sophomore Chris Weiler 8-4 at 184, and Ben Honis won a 6-2 decision over sophomore Jake Jakobsen at 197. The first bout after intermission did not start the Mountain Hawks' way. Sophomore heavyweight Jordan Wood gave up the first takedown to Jeramy Sweany and then needed an injury timeout, finishing the period in a 3-0 hole. The deficit grew to 5-0 early in the second period before Wood stormed back, showing dominance on his feet and scoring three takedowns in the second period and four more in the third to rally for a 17-12 decision. "Jordan Wood trains harder than anybody in the country," Santoro said. "He trains for being down 5-0. He kept coming and coming and coming. That was a spark we needed at that point." With ranked wrestlers at the first three weight classes, Cornell had the firepower needed to get back in the match, but the Big Red could only muster 10 team points from 125 through 141. Freshman Luke Resnick battled Vitali Arujau at 125 and only conceded an 18-6 major decision. At 133, sophomore Brandon Paetzell fell behind Chas Tucker 7-1 after two but came back in the third before falling 8-4. Junior Ryan Pomrinca trailed top-ranked and defending national champion Yianni Diakomihalis 11-4 after one period but did his part over the final four minutes to keep the match to a regular decision. Pomrinca worked out a takedown in the second period and added an escape in the third while only conceding a pair of second period escapes as Diakomihalis eventually won a 13-7 decision. The decisive bout at 149 saw a scoreless first period with Furnas escaping two seconds into the second period and Schuyler getting his escape two seconds into the third. Midway through the sudden victory period Furnas came in towards Schuyler's left leg, but the senior spun around and covered for the winning takedown with 23 seconds remaining. "This win builds momentum and momentum is always a good thing," Santoro said. "We have two really big ones next weekend that we have to get ready for. We'll enjoy this one and get back to work on Monday and be ready to go next weekend. "We all want to win dual meets but at the end of the day these guys want to be on the podium in March," Santoro continued. "That's what we're training for. Whatever happened to our team in the fall, we have to deal with it. Our guys are responding well. They're not feeling sorry for themselves. They're going out and trying to get better. As a coach, I want them to become better people and better wrestlers. If we do that every day, we'll be all right." Lehigh wins its third straight dual overall, improving to 3-7 on the dual season, while Cornell falls to 5-2, dropping its second straight. The Mountain Hawks will hit the road for two EIWA duals next weekend as Lehigh travels to American Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Navy Sunday at 2 p.m. Audio coverage of both duals will be available on WLVR-FM (91.3). 3. HAMPTON, Va. -- Redshirt sophomore B.C. LaPrade's upset of No. 6 Larry Early at 157 pounds propelled No. 13 Virginia Tech to a 31-9 victory over Old Dominion to advance to the finals of the Virginia Duals on Saturday evening. The Hokies (4-2) won eight of 10 matches in the dual with three going for bonus points. Tech will now face in-state foe Virginia in the finals this evening beginning at approximately 8:15 p.m. The match will not count as an ACC dual and no points in the Commonwealth Clash will be on the line. MATCH NOTES The Hokies are now 16-22 all-time vs. Old Dominion. Tech advanced to their sixth Virginia Duals final with the win over the Monarchs. After a fall at 125 pounds, Korbin Myers got the Hokies on the board with a decisive 14-5 major decision over Kilian Cardinale. Beginning with Ryan Bless' 8-3 decision at 149, the Hokies won the final seven bouts of the match. Trailing 2-1 late in the first period to Early at 157, LaPrade got a body lock and tossed Early to his back for two points and two near fall. The four-point move and a third period takedown proved to be the difference in the upset victory. A major decision at 165 from Mekhi Lewis, his seventh bonus point win of the season, and a tech fall at 184 for Zack Zavatsky bolstered Tech's lead late in the match. Tonight's match vs. Virginia will be only the third final in the 39-year history of the Virginia Duals to feature two teams from the Commonwealth. The other two were both Tech and UVA in 2013 and 2015.] The Hokies are 2-0 all-time in Virginia Duals finals against UVA. 4. HAMPTON, Va. -- The Virginia wrestling team (9-5) used three bonus-point victories, including two wins by pin, on the way to a 23-16 victory over No. 16 Arizona State (2-5) in the semifinals of the Virginia Duals on Saturday afternoon. The win sets up a dual against No. 13 Virginia Tech (4-2) in tonight's final at 8:30 p.m. at the Hampton Coliseum. “Our team is rolling,” said Virginia head coach Steve Garland. “I keep saying how much improvement I've seen, well Arizona State crushed us last year and we just turned it completely around. Our guys are buying in. They are wrestling with confidence and grit. They are wrestling stingy at every position. I couldn't be happier for them.” Each team won five weight classes, but the Cavaliers used critical bonus points to pull out the upset victory. A tech fall from junior Jack Mueller (Dallas, Texas) at 125 pounds and pins from sophomore Jake Keating (Naperville, Ill.) at 157 pounds and Jay Aiello (Chantilly, Va.) at 197 pounds helped power Virginia to the victory. Arizona State only picked up bonus points at one weight class. Mueller, the fifth-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds, again got the Cavaliers started with bonus points before sophomore Louie Hayes (Orland Park, Ill.) would come up with a big win at 133 pounds to extend the Virginia lead. Trailing as time wound down in the third period, Hayes notched an escape and a takedown to pick up the 4-3 decision. Sam Krivus (Greensburg, Pa.), the 16th-ranked wrestler at 141 pounds, continued the scoring for Virginia with a 9-3 decision. Following the first win of the afternoon by the Sun Devils at 149 pounds, Keating provided a big boost to the Cavaliers with his pin of No. 11 Christian Pagdilao at 157 pounds. For the second straight day, Keating quickly reversed his fortunes with a takedown, then flipped Pagdilao on his back for the pin and six points for Virginia. Arizona State would then grab three straight victories at 165 pounds, 174 pounds and 184 pounds to cut the Cavalier lead to 17-13 before Aiello would clinch the match with his pin of Austyn Harris. The Sun Devils then closed out the match with a decision at heavyweight. Results: 125: No. 5 Jack Mueller tech fall Brandon Courtney (ASU), 16-1 – UVA 5, ASU 0 133: Louie Hayes dec. 6. EAST LANSING, Mich. -- No. 14 Fighting Illini Wrestling won its first Big Ten matchup of the season at Michigan State in an 18-15 thriller on Friday night. With the score tied 15-15 heading into the final match, the Illini looked to redshirt senior leader and nationally-ranked No. 2 Emery Parker to win the 184-pound bout against No. 20 Cameron Caffey and secure the team's first conference win. Parker came away with a takedown in overtime to with the bout and the match for the Orange and Blue. The Illini trailed 12-0 after the first three bouts, but five straight wins by redshirt sophomore Dylan Duncan (133), redshirt sophomore Mike Carr (141), junior Christian Kanzler (149), redshirt junior Eric Barone and redshirt senior Nick Gasbarro, helped bring the Illini back and put UI in a position to win the dual. "The first few matches were really flat," said head coach Jim Heffernan. "Duncan, Carr, Kanzler and Barone changed the momentum, and Gasbarro's win was huge in a really tough spot. It was good to have Emery (Parker) and Michael (Carr) back." With the dual beginning at 197-pounds, the Illini fell behind early after dropping the first three matches of the evening. No. 20 Dylan Duncan was then tasked with getting the first Illinois victory of the nigh in the 133-pound bout against Anthony Tutolo. It was an action-packed second period, as withing the first minute Duncan recorded a takedown, and then responded to a Tutolo reversal with a reversal of his own. With a 4-4 tie heading into the final period, Duncan started the third with another reversal which would give him the lead for good. Duncan won the 133-pound matchup in a 7-5 decision over Tutolo to put the Illini on the board and make it a 12-3 Spartan advantage. No. 5 Mike Carr was up next in his first matchup since the Cliff Keen Invite on December 1, tonight looking for a win against MSU's Austin Eicher. Carr looked in-form early, recording the first period takedown to take a 2-1 lead into the second frame. After an escape, Carr picked up his second takedown of the match to extend his lead to 5-2 over Eicher. Carr's defense was strong in the final period and he earned the victory in his return matchup by way of a 7-5 decision, putting the score at 12-6 in favor of Michigan State. Christian Kanzler looked to make it a third consecutive victory for the Illini in the 149-pound bout versus Christian Enriquez. Like Carr in the preceding match, Kanzler jumped out to the early lead with a takedown and finished the first in front, 2-1. After falling behind in the second, Kanzler responded with another takedown to regain a 4-3 lead. However, an escape late in the period by Enriquez drew the score even going into the final period. Kanzler made a quick escape, and then finished the period strong with a takedown and a point for riding time to win the match in an 8-4 decision. Kanzler's first-career Big Ten victory pushed the Spartan lead to just three, with Michigan State now leading, 12-9. It was a very defensively poignant effort from No. 12 Eric Barone in the 157-pound matchup against Jake Tucker. After a scoreless first period, Barone would pick up his first point of the match after a penalty called against Tucker. He would follow up with an escape point to take a 2-0 lead into the third period. Barone would only allow one escape point to Tucker in the final frame, and as a result acheived a 2-1 decision over Tucker to know the dual score at 12-all. Nick Gasbarro got the start for the Orange and Blue at 165-pounds in what would be a very pivotal matchup against MSU's Logan Ritchie. After another tightly contested first period, Gasbarro was able to come away with the first points of the match with a reversal late in the second period. After Ritchie escaped to start the third, he was called for a penalty which further extended Gasbarro's lead to 3-1. Gasbarro added the exclamation point with a takedown in the closing seconds of the match to win a 5-1 decision over Ritchie. Gasbarro's win is the first for him in a dual this season, and was the fifth-consecutive win of the night for the Illini, which gave UI its first lead of the night in a 15-12 advantage. After Carver James dropped a heartbreaking 4-2 decision in overtime to Drew Hughes to push the score back even at 15, the Illini would be counting on senior leader and No. 2 Emery Parker to come through in the 184-pound bout against No. 20 Cameron Caffey and bring Illinois the victory. After yet another scoreless first period, Parker got on the board first with an escape in the second period to take a 1-0 lead. Parker started the third with that lead, but an escape by Coffey evened the score at 1. The last minute of the bout was back-and-forth, with Parker first taking the lead on a takedown, then Caffey drawing within one on an escape. Caffey then took the lead late with a takedown, but Parker was poised and made an escape in the last seconds of the third to tie the score and force overtime. Nearing the end of the first overtime period, Parker recorded the takedown that would win him the match, 6-4, and give Illinois an 18-15 victory over Michigan State. Tonight's Illini victory puts the team at 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in Big Ten action. The victory also is the fifth straight for Illinois against Michigan State. The Illini are right back in action tomorrow as they head to Ann Arbor, Mich., to do battle with No. 5 Michigan at the Crisler Center. The dual will begin at 6 p.m. CT and can be streamed on BTN2Go. 7. ATHENS, Ohio - No. 5 Missouri Wrestling (11-0, 5-0) mounted a comeback to defeat MAC opponent Ohio on Friday night, with a final score of 30-12. This victory extended the Tigers' regular season win streak to 31 duals and keeps the Tigers undefeated during the 2018-19 season. Mizzou Wrestling remains perfect against the Bobcats, moving to 7-0 against them since joining the MAC in 2012-13. Dual Recap After dropping the first three bouts of the night, the Tigers went on a roll to tie up the score and eventually defeat the Bobcats. It was freshman Brock Mauller (Columbia, Mo.) that earned the Tigers their first points, earning his 14th decision of the season and improving his record to 21-1. The Tigers were perfect following Mauller's performance, winning the final six bouts and landing three pins. True freshman Jarrett Jacques (Columbia, Mo.) landed his first pin of the season to earn the Tigers their first bonus points. His pin came against MAC opponent Zac Carson, who was placed second in the conference at 157. This upset improves Jacques' freshman season record to 19-5. Redshirt juniors Connor Flynn (Dardenne Prairie, Mo) and Luke Fortuna (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) both earned decisions over their opponents to build Missouri's lead before the victory was solidified by two consecutive pins coming from redshirt senior Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.) and redshirt sophomore Wyatt Koelling (Kaysville, Ut.). Notable Tigers Jacques, a true freshman, earned his first pin of the season against an experienced opponent in order to move the Tigers within reach of the Bobcats and further swing the momentum in Missouri's favor. Coming in the first period, Jacques wasted no time in dominating his opponent and putting him on his back. Lewis also made quick work of his opponent, wrestling up in the 184 weight class for the first time this season. The extra weight seemingly had no impact on Lewis, as he worked his opponent and landed the pin a little over a minute into the first period. Redshirt sophomore Koelling put on a dominant performance of his own, battling through the first period and earning a takedown and reversal before finally getting the pin. It was his fall that secured the win for the Tigers and solidified the 31st victory in Missouri's impressive win streak. Up Next The Tigers return home to Columbia to face off against the Northern Iowa Panthers next Thursday night at the Hearnes Center. The meet is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. The Tigers defeated UNI 23-9 in their last meeting. 9. EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- In its first-ever home Mid-American Conference match, the SIUE Cougars are winners. The Cougars picked up their first victory of the season with a 20-16 triumph over Buffalo. SIUE is now 1-7 overall and 1-1 in the MAC. "We're very excited," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "Our guys have been close for a while. We've been wrestling well and have had a lot of individual success, but obviously the team record is not there. This was a huge win for the guys." Sergio Villalobos earned the decisive win for the Cougars with a late third-period takedown over Buffalo's Logan Rill. Villalobos won 5-2. "For him to come and get that win is awesome," said Spates. SIUE and Buffalo split the opening two matches with the Cougars' Christian Dulaney starting off with a 7-4 decision over Brett Perry. Buffalo's Jake Gunning evened the team score with a 4-2 win over Colton McKiernan at heavyweight. SIUE 125-pound freshman Austin Macias pulled off the biggest victory of the night, pinning Kyle Akins in 2 minutes 39 seconds. "That was huge," said Spates. "That kid (Akins) is a really good kid. Like Sergio, Austin has been struggling this season." Buffalo, now 7-4 overall and 1-1 in the MAC, would take the lead 13-9 with a pair of technical falls at 133 and 141 pounds. That set up three straight decisions for SIUE's Tyshawn Williams at 149 pounds, Justin Ruffin at 157 pounds and Nate Higgins at 165 pounds. After a major decision for Buffalo's Jake Lanning at 174 points, that set up the final match of the night to decide the final team score. "It wasn't the best crowd because of the snowstorm, but we had a decent crowd in there and they were all fired up. I think that really kind of turns the momentum of the meet around," said Spates. 12. PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- No. 24 Rutgers wrestling (7-2, 1-1) earned its signature win of the season, defeating No. 10 Wisconsin (6-2, 1-2), 17-16, Friday night in front of 4,563 fans at the RAC. With the dual ending in a five-five split, the Scarlet Knights secured their first Big Ten Conference victory of 2018-2019 by criteria with a 56-50 advantage in total match points. No. 2 Nick Suriano (133), No. 2 Anthony Ashnault (149), No. 15 John Van Brill (157), Joseph Grello (174) and Matthew Correnti (197) all collected wins to help RU earn its second consecutive win over the Badgers. The dual victory also marked the first over a top-10 program since Rutgers defeated then-No. 7 Lehigh on Feb. 20, 2016 at the RAC. "Each dual meet is different," said head coach Scott Goodale. "We'll be confident that we can wrestle hard and win big matches; that's what we're confident in. We're confident in Suriano. We're confident in Ashnault. We're confident in [Nicholas] Gravina. We're confident in our guys. It was a good Big Ten win." How it Happened • After Wisconsin opened with a decision at 125 pounds, Suriano responded with his sixth major decision of the season against Jens Lantz. Suriano recorded two takedowns in each of the three periods, and added the riding time point for a 14-5 final score. • Peter Lipari (141) followed with what looked to be the match of the night at the time, as the redshirt junior held a 7-4 advantage over Tristan Moran after two periods. However, Moran responded with an escape and takedown in the closing seconds, securing the 8-7 decision with the riding time point. • Ashnault won by decision for just the third time this season with his 12-6 win over two-time NCAA qualifier Cole Martin. Ashnault recorded three takedowns in the final minute of the second period against Martin to help him move to 14-0 on the season. • Van Brill followed with a gritty 6-0 decision over Devin Bahr. The graduate student landed a takedown in the first period, added an escape and reversal in the second and capped off his first conference dual win with the riding time point. • Rutgers held a 10-6 advantage at intermission. • After Anthony Olivieri (165) dropped a major decision to No. 3 Evan Wick in his Rutgers varsity debut, Grello got the crowd on its feet in his bout with Pat Spray. The redshirt sophomore tilted Spray twice, including a two-point near fall in the final 20 seconds of the opening period for an early 4-0 lead. Grello would ride out Spray for the majority of the match for the final 5-0 decision. • In just his third match of the season, Nicholas Gravina (184) dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to Mason Reinhardt. Tied 1-1 with just four seconds left, Gravina went down with an injury, allowing Reinhardt to choose bottom to close out the period, escaping for the final result. After the loss, the dual was tied, 13-13. •In his bout with Beau Breske, Correnti led, 3-2, heading into the final period. With a chance to secure the win, Correnti landed a two-point near fall and a takedown in the final two minutes for a 7-4 decision. • With Rutgers leading in match points, 55-45, Christian Colucci (HWT) did his job by dropping just a 5-1 decision to No. 9 Trent Hillger. Notables • This was the first win by criteria for Rutgers since last season, when it earned an 18-17 victory over then-No. 24 North Carolina on Jan. 12, 2018 at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights prevailed in that match courtesy of a 70-64 advantage in match points. • This was the second consecutive win over Wisconsin, as the Scarlet Knights muscled a 24-12 victory over the Badgers in Madison. • Ashnault now has 105 wins for his career, tied with Mike Kwapriewski and Billy Smith for ninth all-time in program history. • Ashnault and Suriano are now a combined 28-0 with 23 wins by bonus points this season, including 10 falls, eight major decisions, four tech falls and a forfeit. In dual action, they are a combined 18-0 and have collected 93 team points in RU's first nine matches. • Suriano has yet to concede a takedown this season. • Correnti has now won seven consecutive matches dating back to his 6-3 decision over Ethan Laird of Rider on Dec. 16, 2018. Quotes Head Coach Scott Goodale On Evan Wick at 165: We were going back and forth on that all day long for the first time in probably 12 years, since I've been here. It felt like a little bit of a high school match where the coin flip actually mattered. We wanted to see what they were going to do. We had three guys ready; Glasgow was ready. When they went with Wick, they went kind of straight so we decided to go with Anthony, tough kid and you just have to be ready. Every guy has to be ready to go, it doesn't matter if you're the first, second, third string guy; be ready to go. He was ready to go, he did a good job. On expecting Wick at 174: I thought so. I thought they'd probably make that move. I thought maybe both Wicks would bump up. You usually don't do that in college wrestling, but it definitely crossed my mind, knowing that their 174 was hurt. It crossed my mind for sure. On Christiensen being out: We had a pretty good idea, he wasn't here last night or even this morning. He was pretty banged up. We were supposed to wrestle him at the Midlands, Willie was, and he got hurt right before they were about to wrestle, so we knew it was pretty serious. I don't know the extent of it, but we didn't expect him to be here. On winning a dual with no pins: Each dual meet is different. We'll be confident that we can wrestle hard and win big matches; that's what we're confident in. We're confident in Suriano. We're confident in Ashnault. We're confident in Gravina. We're confident in our guys. It was a good Big Ten win. On Colucci: I don't know if he knew the situation; it's a tough thing to do. He probably wanted to go down there, that's the kid's strength on top. We want to win the match. We felt there was a lot of momentum on the feet, that's why we went there in the third. If we could get a takedown, we could erase riding time, so that was our thought process. We wrestled him hard. I knew as long as we didn't get majored, we were going to win the dual meet. (On possibly changing Colucci's approach) No, just go wrestle. Wrestle hard. Keep yourself in the match and don't let him get on top. That is probably something we talked about with him all week. This kid's strength, he wins a lot of dual meets on top and pins a lot of people. On Correnti's win: Breske wrestled decent at Midlands, he's a blue-chip recruit, a really good high school wrestler. He went to Nebraska first, transferred over; not quite sure how he's able to wrestle right away, but he is. He took the mat and Matt's wrestled well, it was a good win for Matt. On the importance of tonight's win: This kid is a winner. He wants to win. He wants to be a part of a winner, so it is important to win dual meets. They're important to us, they're important to our fan base. We want to be around winners. Anytime you can win a Big Ten dual meet, it's important to us. Now we will lock in on Sunday. On preparation for Sunday: Clearly the staff has done their work, you know we've done our homework and we watch a lot of tape. We know what we need to do. We'll get together tomorrow afternoon and prepare a bit, but it is the point in the season where you get your mind right. You get your body ready to go. You get excited to wrestle. That's what it's about. Take care of yourself. I'm not going to put too much into it. This is what they do. It's not just about worrying about what they do. It's about how you attack the 420 seconds, the 7 minutes. That's our focus. On winning after giving up points: It doesn't feel good. It doesn't feel good giving up those points late. Anthony's the first one to admit it, giving up a major late. That's a loss of focus there that can't happen; he knows that. Gravina, it's an injury, but we have to figure out a way in that injury time to just ride him out, even if you have to drop down and take one. Those guys know that, they've been here for a long time. They've seen matches swing the other way, against us that way. They know better, so no it doesn't feel good. It doesn't ever feel good to give up majors and lose those type of close matches. Junior Nick Suriano On Sunday: I feel great, that's about it. It's an awesome atmosphere. Everyone is looking forward to Sunday. That's what it's about, Sunday. I mean I felt great, but I'm focused on Sunday. On the importance of tonight's win: It's awesome. We were talking about it earlier, we need this win, and we got it. Now we're right up there, back in the ranks. People start chirping a little bit, and that's what it's all about. On his two days motion: That was 100-percent real. Two days, that's what I said, two days. That's what it's all about. That's what this weekend is about, two days. It's going to be a big match up. I'm looking forward to it. That's why I signed up for this sport, to wrestle the best. I want to show people Jersey wrestling. Remember all of the chirp? We got the win over Wisconsin, we're climbing up in the ranks, and now it's about beating world caliber wrestlers, like myself. That's what I am. It's time to take them out. He's a great competitor we've faced before. It's going to be great. Rutgers versus Oklahoma State in Jersey. People should be fired up. On his next opponent: Of course, he does, that's the whole point. He's coming here to beat me. It's going to be a fight.
  13. LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- The Rider University wrestling team had a solid day on the mat on Friday, winning a pair of duals at Alumni Gymnasium. The Broncs (3-2, 1-0 EWL) started the day with a resounding, 33-5, victory over conference foe Cleveland State before topping regional rival Drexel, 21-13, in the nightcap. The Broncs dominated the Vikings, winning all nine bouts that were contested. Nationally-ranked No. 17 Jesse Dellavecchia (Great River, NY/East Islip) and freshman George Walton (Franklin, NJ/Bound Brook) earned bonus points with consecutive pins at 165 and 174, respectively. Wrestling most of the match with negative one point due to a one-point deduction assessed during the opening match, Cleveland State took its only points via Rider's forfeit at 184. The Broncs started out strong against the Dragons, winning four of the first five bouts contested. Gino Fluri (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren Regional) came back in a sudden victory and Dellavecchia defeated nationally-ranked No. 14 Ebed Jarrell. Quotes & Notes "It was a good day. This win against Drexel, particularly feels nice because we lost a heartbreaker to them last year. Over the last few years every time we've wrestled Drexel the home team has won and we were hoping to be that team this year. Our guys wrestled well today. It was nice to get revenge so to speak and continue to grow and develop in that process." "Michale still isn't 100 percent. You can see it in his actions. His knee is still sore. It's going to be a little time before he's 100 percent, but he did what he needed to do today. George has a lot of talent. He just needs to finish a couple of those positions and he would have come out on the other end of that decision. George is a good kid, he works hard and he has a bright future if he continues develop and pushing his limits." "Tomorrow is another EWL battle. I expect them to come in and fight hard against us. I also expect our guys to turn around and do the same. We're looking for the effort from our guys to take care of business. We'll sleep well tonight, make weight in the morning and do it all over again tomorrow evening." – Rider Head Coach John Hangey - Dellavecchia now has a team-leading 15 wins and three pins on the year. - Dellavecchia, Jonathan Tropea, Anthony Cefolo, Travis Layton, Gino Fluri and Ethan Laird each won both of their matches today. - Walton made his dual debut, pinning Cleveland State's Colton Carroll at 1:04. 14. With a lead and Patrick Brucki looming, Princeton knew it needed one more big victory in its upset bid of No. 15 North Carolina Friday night in Princeton. Travis Stefanik was more than happy to provide that win, and it was one that nearly took the roof of Jadwin Gym. The Princeton freshman came up with a first-period fall over Davin Kane that kept Princeton ahead to stay in one of its highest-ranked wins in decades. One month after an upset of No. 8 Lehigh, Princeton did it again with a 23-16 victory over No. 15 North Carolina. Embedded video Princeton moved to 4-3 with the win and will bring some added energy and confidence into Saturday's showdown with No. 3 Oklahoma State, which is set for 1 pm in Jadwin Gym. You can purchase tickets online or at the door. Princeton never trailed Friday after taking three of the first four matches, starting with a 13-3 major decision for 10th-ranked Patrick Glory. The Tiger freshman controlled his match from the start in the leadup to his expected showdown with No. 4 Nick Piccininni of Oklahoma State. North Carolina won at 133 and sent out 19th-ranked AC Headlee at 141, but Marshall Keller was about to give Jadwin its first explosion of the night. A takedown and back points in the second period turned control to the Princeton corner, and Keller never let go of that momentum. A late push gave him the 14-6 major decision, which opened an 8-3 Princeton lead. The main event of the night happened at 149, and top-ranked Matthew Kolodzik handled the moment just as Princeton fans would expect. He scored the only takedown of the match in the first period and then kept control of 5th-ranked freshman Austin O'Connor in a 3-2 Princeton win. North Carolina got back into it with two straight wins, but that momentum came to a screeching halt with Stefanik's pin. Kevin Parker nearly kept the heat going against No. 15 Chip Ness of North Carolina, though Ness held on for the 7-5 win. Regardless, Brucki was still in position to clinch the win, just as he did against both Lehigh and Rider. And for the third time, he handled the moment in style. Brucki pinned Chasen Blair in the first period to secure the Tiger victory. North Carolina added a win at heavyweight to finish the match. 15. BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- In its first home action in nearly six weeks, Lehigh piled up the bonus points in a 34-12 win over Bucknell Friday night inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The Mountain Hawks won seven bouts, scoring bonus points in five, including three first period pins to post their second straight dual win overall and their first home and EIWA win of the season. "It was a good performance," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. "We were a little apprehensive coming in because last time we were home we didn't wrestle very well. We came out and wrestled much better. As the matches went on we became more relaxed." The Mountain Hawks (2-7) dropped the opening bout as Jakob Campbell topped freshman Luke Resnick 8-3 at 125, but sophomore Brandon Paetzell started a three-bout Lehigh run with a first period pin at 133. Facing David Campbell, Paetzell locked up a cradle and took Campbell to his back, securing the fall at 2:07 to put Lehigh in front 6-3. "Brandon's having a nice season and he has some really good wins," Santoro said. "We knew bonus points were going to be big tonight and he got some." Paetzell's win was followed by a 5-3 decision by junior Ryan Pomrinca over Joey Gould at 141. After a scoreless first period, Pomrinca scored takedowns in the second and third periods, plus a third period escape. Senior Cortlandt Schuyler followed with an 8-3 decision over Matthew Kolonia at 149 to put the Mountain Hawks up 12-3. Schuyler scored two first period takedowns, added one more in the second plus an escape and riding time advantage. The featured bout of the night matched nationally-ranked true freshmen Josh Humphreys and Zach Hartman at 157. After a scoreless first period, Humphreys used strong work on top to ride out the second, but Hartman returned the favor with a strong ride in the third and caught Humphreys in a cradle, securing the fall at 5:51 to cut Lehigh's lead to 12-9 at intermission. "Josh was doing a great job but he got caught in a Navy ride that turned into a cradle," Santoro said. "Hartman's really good. Josh will make adjustments so I'm excited to see how he does when we get to conference and NCAAs." Lehigh won the first three bouts coming out of intermission to go up 28-9. Senior Gordon Wolf gave up the first takedown to D.J. Hollingshead at 165, but scored the next 12 points to put himself in line for a major decision. The match was delayed several minutes when Hollingshead went into the concussion protocol. He was cleared but when he was about to go into the protocol a second time, he instead defaulted to Wolf at the 6:10 mark. At 174, junior Jordan Kutler was dominant on his feet, racking up 10 takedowns in a 22-8 major decision over Nick Stephani. Sophomore Chris Weiler made his season dual debut in place of senior Ryan Preisch at 184 and made quick work of Kyle Inlander, converting a double leg takedown and then locking up a cradle for a 40 second fall. "Chris can put some bonus points up and he did just that," Santoro said. "He likes to wrestle, especially in front of a crowd like we had tonight. He did a great job." Bucknell (2-5) picked up its third win at 197 as Drew Phipps edged sophomore Kyle Gentile 3-1. The match was tied 1-1 late in the third when a stall warning was issued to both wrestlers. Gentile took a shot but as countered for the winning score in the final seconds. Sophomore Jordan Wood closed out the dual by taking Eric Chakonis down twice in the first minute, the second time to his back for the fall in 57 seconds. The Mountain Hawks will host No. 7 Cornell Saturday in the annual Billy Sheridan Memorial Dual, Saturday at 2 p.m. inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. A limited number of tickets remain available and can be purchased online at LehighTickets.com. The 2018-19 Lehigh wrestling season is presented by the Historic Hotel Bethlehem. 16. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- No. 2 Ohio State (6-0, 2-0 B1G) steamrolled the Indiana Hoosiers (3-7, 0-3 B1G) in University Gym's final collegiate wrestling match, departing with a 43-3 win. Half the Buckeyes pinned their conference foe. The five falls are the most by Ohio State in a dual since racking up a half dozen pins on Nov. 22, 2016 against Cleveland State. Rather than ending the dual, the big fellas got it started Friday night in the Hoosier State. Heavyweight Chase Singletary immediately locked in a tight cradle to begin the second period, hearing the slap of the mat just 13 seconds in. His fourth pin of the season came at the 3:13 mark and gave Ohio State an early 6-0 edge. True freshman Malik Heinselman peeled off his redshirt and took the mat at 125 pounds. The Colorado native was pitted against three-time NCAA Qualifier Elijah Oliver. The two sparred through a scoreless first frame and period number two included a lone escape for Oliver. Heinselman elected to begin the third in the bottom position and evened the tally at 1-1 with an escape of his own. With 1:15 left to go, he then posted a go-ahead takedown (see video below) and ultimately emerged as a 3-2 victor in his first career varsity action. Luke Pletcher made it two decisions in a row for OSU, topping Garrett Pepple 7-3 in the 133-pound clash. It marks Pletcher's 15th triumph of the season (15-1). Joey McKenna and Micah Jordan followed with first-period pins to inflate Ohio State's intermission lead to 24-0. McKenna built a 14-2 advantage before sticking his opponent while Jordan had held a 12-2 lead when putting Kyle Luigs on his back for the final time. The next two bouts were ultra close. First a 7-6 squeaker for Ke-Shawn Hayes (157 lbs), and then Indiana's Bryce Martin (165 lbs) earning a 3-0 victory. Hayes jumped ahead 4-1 early, but eventually needed to escape with less than a minute remaining to secure the win. Te'Shan Campbell improved to 8-2 during his senior campaign, garnering a 12-2 major decision over Wisconsin transfer Jacob Covaciu. Campbell has picked up bonus points in 5-of-8 wins (this major decision and four previous tech falls). Myles Martin and Kollin Moore tacked on two more falls to conclude the contest. Martin's pin came at 6:45 while Moore ended it in the second period. Results: 285 lbs | No. 17 Chase Singletary (OSU) def. 17. BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- The Bloomsburg University wrestling team won its second consecutive dual on Friday night as it edged the visiting Fighting Scots of Edinboro University, 21-19, at the Nelson Field House in an Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) contest. Bloomsburg improved to 2-4 overall and 1-2 against EWL opponents while Edinboro dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the EWL standings. The victory snapped a five-match losing skid against the Fighting Scots as Bloomsburg picked up its first victory against its EWL-rival since January 25, 2013, when it earned a 19-18 win at the Nelson Field House. The Huskies started strong with wins in four of the first five bouts of the night which included a pair of pins from junior Willy Girard (Williamstown, Pa/Williams Valley) and redshirt junior Grant Bond (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) at 125 and 149 pounds, respectively. Girard picked up his 13th victory of the season - second via fall - as he needed 2:14 to take down Arick Shankles to give the Huskies a 6-0 advantage. Redshirt junior Lewis Williams (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) extended the lead to 9-0 as he earned a 14-8 decision over Richie Gomez at 133 pounds. Williams improved to 7-11 overall and 2-4 in duals this season. After a fall by Edinboro's Carmine Ciotti at 141 pounds cut the Bloomsburg advantage to 9-6, Bond needed just 1:35 to pin Christopher Matzke to extend the lead to 15-6. The redshirt junior improved to 11-4 overall and earned his team-leading fourth pin of the season. Junior Nate Newberry (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) followed with a 3-2 win in the first tiebreaker over Tim Suter in the 157-pound bout to balloon the advantage to 18-6. Newberry hit double figures with the victory as he improved to 10-9 overall on the year. Edinboro earned a decision at 165 pounds and a major decision at 174 pounds to trim the Huskies' lead to 18-13 before redshirt junior Trevor Allard (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) posted a 10-4 victory over Zach Ancewicz at 184 pounds to extend the advantage to 21-13. Allard moved to 17-9 on the season and has now won 13 of his last 16 matches. The win proved to be just enough as the Fighting Scots collected wins by decision at 197 and 285 for the final margin. Bloomsburg, winners of two straight, will head to Clarion University on Sunday afternoon, January 13. The action is slated to get underway at 2:00 p.m. Stay up to date with the Huskies all season long by following us on our official social media accounts: Twitter (@GoBUHuskies), Facebook (BUHuskies), and Instagram (BUHuskies). 18. WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- With the full lineup back in action, No. 17 Purdue powered its way past Maryland 28-10 in its first dual of the season at Holloway Gymnasium on Friday. The Boilermakers captured seven weights, picking up bonus points in four bouts, as they evened their record at 4-4 overall and 1-1 heading into the heart of the Big Ten Conference schedule. The Terrapins left still looking for their first win at 0-4, 0-1 Big Ten. The first three weights went Purdue's way in a dual that started at 125 pounds. Devin Schroder opened the action with a 9-1 major decision, his fourth of the season, over Brandon Clay. After missing South Beach Duals due to injury, Ben Thornton returned to the lineup with a strong showing. The 19th-ranked 133-pounder racked up the back points in a 17-2 (4:33) technical fall of Maryland's Orion Anderson. "Coming off of an injury, it is really just mental and being ready to go," the redshirt senior from Stoddard, Wisconsin, said. "In order for me to be the best that I can be, I have to go out there with no hesitation. I tried to be as explosive as I can and a couple times during the match it came down to that. I was explosive, got the takedown and finished my work on top." It was the fifth technical fall of Thornton's final campaign, a career high, as he improved to 13-3. The ensuing match saw Nate Limmex (13-7) shutout Michael Doetsch 3-0, extending the Boilermakers' lead to 12-0. No. 13 Griffin Parriott made it 15-4 going into the break thanks to a 9-6 win over Adam Whitesell at 157. "I think anytime you can set a good tone it is a positive thing," Purdue head wrestling coach Tony Ersland said. "Each guy is going to have their own battle to take care of. We always tell them to keep their mindset and their focus on their individual match, but I do think we set a good tone and carried it through the rest of the night." Dylan Lydy also returned to the lineup in commanding fashion after missing time during the South Beach Duals. The returning NCAA qualifier, who is ranked 14th at 174 pounds, disposed of Josh Ugalde 14-3 for his fourth major decision, taking his redshirt junior mark to 16-4. No. 12 Christian Brunner provided fireworks at 197 pounds, pinning Niko Cappello in 3:40 to close out Purdue's scoring efforts for the night. Prior to Brunner's pin, Max Lyon defeated Kyle Jasenski 7-2. "There's a lot of confidence," Ersland said. "Tonight was a confidence builder. When we have our lineup intact, they are a tough team to beat. They know that and they showed it again tonight." On Jan. 18, wrestling will be the first of three consecutive days of Purdue vs. Indiana at Mackey Arena. The Boilermakers will aim for their ninth straight win over their in-state rival starting at 7 p.m. ET. #BeatIU weekend includes men's basketball on Saturday, followed by women's basketball on Sunday. Both head coaches in the dual, Tom Brands for Iowa and Brandon Eggum for Minnesota, now coach their alma maters and have been part of the rivalry for decades.
  20. DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Senior 165-pounder Jon Viruet, sophomore 174-pounder AJ Pedro, and senior 197-pounder Tucker Ziegler all posted pins as Brown University wrestling defeated Davidson College, 39-3, on Friday afternoon at Belk Arena in its first dual meet of the season. Opening a three-match trip to the state of North Carolina, the Bears (1-0) won nine of the meet's 10 bouts – including six bonus-point wins and the contest's final eight matches – on their way to the victory over the host Wildcats (2-6). "This was a great start to our trip in North Carolina and to our dual season," Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. "We had a number of guys contribute today. It was a great all-around effort with some guys winning close matches and others scoring bonus points. We'll enjoy this win before we get ready for NC State and Duke tomorrow." Viruet (Springfield, Mass.), registered his second pin and team-best 16th win of the year, while Pedro (Methuen, Mass.) and Ziegler (Myersville, Md.) each notched his first fall of the season. 21. It's not necessarily the kind of official's call that will generate the level of mainstream media coverage and social media discussion of, say, December's incident where a New Jersey high school wrestler had his dreadlocks cut off by a team trainer so that he could wrestle the match, per the mat official's instructions that he have his hair cut, or forfeit the match. That said, there is some consternation on the part of some in the amateur wrestling community regarding a referee penalizing two wrestlers from one high school team dropping the straps of their singlets which helped change the outcome of the final team score. At a high school dual meet Thursday night between Hershey and Red Land in central Pennsylvania, two Red Land Patriot wrestlers were penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct for lowering the straps of their singlets while still on the mat, ultimately costing their team a dual meet victory. Here's how PennLive.com -- website for the Harrisburg Patriot-News -- described what happened: "The Patriots held off Hershey for an apparent 36-34 victory, but they were called for two instances of unsportsmanlike conduct after the teams shook hands and walked back toward their benches. Two Red Land wrestlers removed the straps of their singlets while still on the mat, which were unsportsmanlike violations (referee Braxton) Ditty said he couldn't overlook. "Ditty explained the decision to a stunned Red Land coach Brian Baglio at the scorer's table. And as Baglio pleaded that the dual was over, Ditty added that the match wasn't complete until he signed the home and visitor scorebooks. That hadn't happened when Ditty spotted the two Red Land wrestlers. "Team points were deducted for each instance, tying the match at 34 and sending it to criteria. Hershey won on Criteria A for fewest team points deducted for flagrant or unsportsmanlike conduct." The Patriots' Baglio was incredulous over the mat official's call. “I still can't believe it was called,” Baglio told the Patriot-News. “The lights are on. The match is over. Parents are already on the edge of the mat. Everybody does it. I guess it's my responsibility as a coach, so I'll take it. But my kids weren't being unsportsmanlike." Here's how the 2018-19 NFHS (National Federation of High Schools) Wrestling Rule Book addresses the issue in Section 4, Conduct of Contestants, Article 2: "Unsportsmanlike conduct involves physical or nonphysical acts and they can occur before, during or after a match. It includes, but is not limited to, such acts as failure to comply with the direction of the referee... failure to keep shoulder straps up while on the mat and failure to comply with the end-of-match procedure..." InterMat asked Fred Feeney, long-time Ohio wrestling referee, to weigh in on the matter of charging team penalty points when wrestlers lower their straps while on the mat. According to Feeney, "There are two schools of thought here: "1. Rules are rules. It is a rule and refs can't really pick and choose which ones apply. "2. A ref who is watching COULD say, 'Keep your singlets up' as easily as 'that's a penalty.' "I am not a fan of the idea that magically, when one second before a ref signs the book, that something is illegal vs. it being OK after a signature. "Pick your battles."

  24. HAMPTON, Va. --The Cavaliers opened the Virginia Duals with a strong performance on Friday morning, advancing in the bracket as Virginia (8-5) took a 32-12 win over No. 20 Lock Haven (2-1) at the Hampton Coliseum. Virginia won seven weight classes, including six bonus-point victories highlighted by a tech fall from junior Jack Mueller (Dallas, Texas) at 125 pounds and a pin by sophomore Jake Keating (Naperville, Ill.) at 157 pounds. The Cavaliers got major decisions from sophomore Louie Hayes (Orland Park, Ill.), senior Will Schany (Blair, Neb.) and sophomore Jay Aiello (Chantilly, Va.), along with a win by forfeit for Tyler Love (Clifton, Va.). Sophomore Michael Murphy (Lookout Mountain, Tenn.) provided the seventh win of the day with his hard-fought decision at 149 pounds. Virginia returns to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday against No. 16 Arizona State (2-4). "Our team continues to improve," said Virginia head coach Steve Garland. "From top to bottom, even in some of the losses, we are competing well. We have been getting better each week and that is such a great feeling as a coach to experience that development. I'm proud of the guys, but we have a lot more work to do." Mueller, the fifth-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds, again gave Virginia a strong start with his tech fall. It marked the sixth bonus-point victory in as many matches this season for the All-American. Mueller currently has four wins by pinfall, a tech fall and a major decision in his 6-0 start. Hayes then added to the lead with his major decision at 133 pounds before Lock Haven would get on the board with a win at 141 pounds. Murphy put points back on the board for Virginia, grinding out his 3-1 decision before Keating pushed the Cavaliers out to a 15-point lead with his dramatic pin at 157 pounds. In a deep hole and on the verge of giving up bonus points himself, Keating avoided a tech fall in the first period with a reversal of Alexander Klucker and then flattened him out for the pinfall to vault Virginia out to an 18-3 lead over the Bald Eagles. Lock Haven would cut back into the lead as fourth-ranked Chance Marsteller took a 4-3 decision over Virginia's Cam Coy in extra time, escaping the grip of Coy with seconds remaining in the tiebreak period. It was a tight match filled with drama that went to extra time after an official review erased a called takedown by Coy at the end of regulation that would have given the Cavalier the decision. A pin at 174 pounds would bring the Bald Eagles within six points before back-to-back major decisions from Schany and Aiello at 184 pounds and 197 pounds, respectively, would lock up the dual meet. The Lock Haven forfeit at heavyweight provided the final margin of victory for Virginia. Results: 125: No. 5 Jack Mueller tech fall Luke Werner (LH), 17-1 – UVA 5, LH 0 133: Louie Hayes major dec. No. 5 Josh Shields (165) and No. 2 Zahid Valencia (174) cruised to back-to-back tech falls as Shields built up over 3:30 riding time in a 5:37 bout and Valencia over 2:30 in a 4:51 bout. No. 20 Josiah Kline (133) found himself down early, 2-0, before evening the score on a takedown of his own and then, very quickly, got the fall to give ASU an early 9-0 lead after a Brandon Courtney decision at 125 lbs. A back-and-forth match with three lead changes at 149 lbs., Josh Maruca broke the 4-4 tie with less than 45 seconds remaining and, despite a Davion Jeffries escape with two seconds remaining, Maruca pulled out a 6-5 decision. Brady Daniel capped the match on a high note with a 3-1 win in the first sudden victory period, scoring a takedown at the edge of the circle. Oklahoma earned wins at 141, 157, 184, and 197. After Virginia upset No. 20 Lock Haven Friday morning, the Sun Devils will face Virginia in the Virginia Duals semifinals Saturday at 2 pm ET/12 noon MT. The winner will advance to the championship Saturday at 8:30 pm ET/6:30 pm MT as ASU looks to defend their 2018 title.
