Alex Carida (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) was tested by Franklin & Marshall's Crew Fullerton at 165 lbs, but Carida would fend off a near takedown in the final seconds of the third period to secure the 6-4 decision victory. 7. BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – With the CSU Bakersfield wrestling team clinging to a 15-12 lead over No. 25 Fresno State and just one match remaining, Bakersfield native Carlos Herrera finished off the Bulldogs with a wild 15-11 decision as the Roadrunners won the Feud on the Field 18-12. There was a large and rowdy crowd on hand this afternoon on the Main Soccer Field as the two Central Valley rivals competed in the first-ever outdoor dual on the campus of CSU Bakersfield. This is the second victory over a ranked opponent this season for CSUB as the Roadrunners also knocked off No. 22 Stanford on January 22. "Let me give credit to our assistant coaches," said CSUB Head Coach Manny Rivera. "They did a great job getting the boys ready while I worried about the event. It was great to see their hard work and our boys' hard work pay off. It was a good win for us. Anytime you can beat a good, in-state rival, especially someone as close as Fresno it always feels good." With a wrapped up knee, the 141-pound Herrera didn't seem to feel the effects as he came out of the gates hot with a quick takedown in the first period. Christopher Deloza rallied, scoring four straight points in the middle of the first three minutes, but Herrera reversed his control and picked up two nearfall points to take a 6-4 lead after the first. In the second, Deloza put up a pair of takedowns and an escape, but Herrera scored a critical takedown as time expired in the period to take an 11-9 lead into the final frame. The Roadrunner dominated the final two minutes and clinched the match and the dual with a takedown with just 11 seconds remaining. "Honestly, it was all of us," said Herrera. "Everybody went out there and fought. It came down to me and I had to fight too. It was a great atmosphere and I knew I had to take care of business. I knew if I stuck to my offense and my shots that I could get the win." Sean Nickell put the Roadrunners ahead 15-12 in the previous match, with a 3-2 decision over Gary Joint. It was Nickell's second win over Joint this season after he defeated him earlier this year at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. Nickell took down Joint with just 16 seconds remaining in the first period to lead 2-0 and used some late-period magic again in the second as he escaped Joint's control with just 15 seconds left to lead 3-0. It was a breakthrough performance for a pair of CSUB wrestlers today. At 125-pounds, CSUB freshman Eddie Flores won his first varsity match, which turned out to be the first of three consecutive victories for the Roadrunners. Trailing 5-2 entering the third period, Flores took down Robert Garcia IV three times in the final two minutes, including the match winner with just 10 seconds remaining. "I'm pumped up," said Flores. "I was able to get my first win, but also get a big win over an in-state rival. We brought it to them. Honestly, at the end I was just so happy. All the work that I've been putting in finally paid off and it's been a rough couple of months. I'm just going to keep working and put up some more W's" After being so close in a number of matches against ranked opponents, Dominic Ducharme finally scored a victory over a ranked wrestler, defeating No. 19 Jackson Hemauer 3-2 in tie breaker scoring. With the match tied at 2-2 at the end of regulation and the 1:00 sudden victory period, Ducharme escaped Hemauer to lead 3-2 in the tie breaker portion. Starting on top to start the next 30 seconds, Ducharme rode out Hemauer to clinch the 3-2 decision. Trailing 6-0 after the first two matches, Jacob Thalin, Bryan Battisto and Ducharme won three straight matches for CSUB to put them up 9-6 before the intermission. Thalin's 7-3 decision over Isaiah Hokit at 165 pounds was the largest margin of victory in a match by any Roadrunner on the day. Despite getting the first takedown of the match, Thalin trailed 3-2 as they headed to the second period. He quickly escaped Hokit's control to start the second and went ahead for good with a takedown halfway through the second frame. Thalin rode out Hokit for the entire final period to clinch the win. In the last home match of his career, redshirt senior Bryan Battisto went out in style with a 9-7 victory over Dominic Kincaid. CSUB would again trail entering the final period, but Battisto reversed Kincaid's control and picked up a huge four-point nearfall to put him up 8-4. Kincaid eventually escaped and took down the CSUB senior, but Battisto escaped with four seconds remaining to seal the decision. 8. NEW YORK -- Powered by six-point pins from first-year Cole Corrigan and senior Max Elling, Columbia claimed a 25-12 wrestling victory over Ivy League rival Penn Saturday evening at University Gymnasium at Dodge Fitness Center. With the victory, Columbia wins its third straight dual match and improves to 7-3 on the year, while Penn drops to 3-7. Both teams were so evenly matched throughout the lineup that points were hard to come by. Columbia won five straight matches through the middle of its lineup to secure the win. "Our guys were up today and they were ready to wrestle," Columbia's Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling Zach Tanelli said. "The key today was our guys' ability to step into the role that they needed to fill today. I give them a lot of credit and I'm so proud of a lot of our guys. Even the matches we lost, we had some fight and that's what I want to see. If this match were flipped the other way, I'd still be okay." "It's a big match, a big win, but again the key was our guys. They're self-starters and self-motivated and that's how the best teams win." After the Lions dropped the first two bouts on decisions and fell behind 6-0, Corrigan got the Lions rolling when he pinned Penn's Grant Aronoff at the 3:22 mark in the 149-pound bout. The fall tied the match at 6-6 as Corrigan has now registered falls in two of his last three bouts. "Cole Corrigan is really finding his groove and his confidence in 0-0 matches. He's stingy. From watching him compete in the room, he's a new man from the freshman that walked in here three months ago. He's starting to recognize how powerful he can be when he believes in himself. He never gets rattled. He stays steady. He's emerging and getting his confidence at this level." Senior Dan Reed gave Columbia the lead for good at 9-6 when he won a 3-2 decision after registering a takedown in the final 30 seconds to defeat Penn's Anthony Artalona in the highly anticipated 157-pound bout. The bout was virtually even and featured a challenge from Columbia in third period. Junior Laurence Kosoy followed with a 5-0 decision over Penn's Evan Deluise at 165 pounds to give Columbia a commanding 12-6 lead. Elling registered the most dramatic win of the day as he registered a fall at the 8:48 mark over Penn's Jake Hendricks in the 174-pound bout. The match was tied at 1-1 in regulation as Hendricks stayed alive with a riding time point. But Elling made his move and eventually completed the pin before the buzzer sounded in the tiebreaker round. "Max is a dangerous guy to wrestle," Tanelli said. "He's a pinner, he's always been a pinner. He's a senior, tomorrow is his last time wrestling in front of our fans. I'm really happy for him to go out on his terms. He wrestled a great match and it pretty much locked up the dual for us today. That was huge." Columbia sophomore Brian Bonino sealed the win with a gutsy near fall 7-1 sudden victory over Penn's Robert Ng. It was Bonino's third straight victory at 184. At 125 pounds, Joe Manchio closed down the day with a 10-2 major decision over Penn's Blair Orr. Columbia hosts its final home match on Sunday when it wrestles against No. 19 Princeton at 2 p.m. Columbia's eight seniors will be honored in a pre-match ceremony. Columbia's eight seniors include JP Ascolese, Christian Briody, Donny Donnelly, Max Elling, Tom Miers, Dan Reed, Sam Ward and Jacob Young. Results: 133: Doug Zapf (Penn) Dec. 9. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. --The Cavaliers used wins at six weight classes, including bonus points at four, to pick up victory on Saturday (Feb. 9) as No. 23 Virginia (12-8, 1-2 ACC) took down Duke (2-7, 0-3 ACC) by a score of 26-17. Sophomores Louie Hayes (Orland Park, Ill.), Jake Keating (Naperville, Ill.) and Jay Aiello (Chantilly, Va.) all picked took bonus-point victories, while redshirt-freshman Cam Coy (Jeannette, Pa.) and junior Tyler Love (Clifton, Va.) both won by decision. Junior Jack Mueller (Dallas, Texas) added six points to the Virginia team score as he won by forfeit. "It was not the prettiest dual match in the world, but I definitely want to focus on the positives ," said Virginia head coach Steve Garland. "Louie (Hayes) and Jake (Keating) both getting technical falls and Jay (Aiello) getting a major decision against a guy who, by the way, beat him twice last season. That's how much Jay has improved. I thought he looked amazing. We want to build off that moving forward and for all of our guys to wrestle like that." Mueller, who is the fifth-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds, got things started with a six-point victory for the Cavaliers as Duke forfeited the weight class to the All-American. Hayes then followed things up with his bonus-point win at 133 pounds, taking on Duke's Arien Leigh who bumped up to wrestle at 133 pounds instead of wrestling at 125 pounds. Hayes controlled things from the start with Leigh, rolling to a 17-1 technical fall at the end of the second period that included 4:30 of riding time. Duke then won the next two weight classes, taking a decision at 141 pounds as sophomore Scott Kiyono (Poway, Calif.) got a reversal on Duke's Josh Finesilver right before the buzzer negate the chance for bonus points. The reversal cut the win to a decision for Duke. The Blue Devils then picked up a major decision at 149 pounds as sixth-ranked Mitch Finesilver took the win over Michael Murphy (Lookout Mountain, Tenn.). Back-to-back wins for the Cavaliers at 157 pounds and 165 pounds pushed the home team out to a 12-point lead in the overall dual score. Keating turned in the tech fall over Duke's Ben Anderson at 157 pounds, racking up 23 points in his victory before Coy ground out a 5-2 decision over Zach Finesilver at 165 pounds. The Blue Devils then won the next two weight classes as No. 16 Matt Finesilver took the 14-4 major decision over Robert Patrick (Ligonier, Pa.) at 174 pounds and Kaden Russell won with a defensive pin of Will Schany (Blair, Neb.) at 184 pounds. The two wins cut the overall lead to two points for the Cavaliers at 19-17. Aiello picked up his 20th win of the season, taking a 12-3 major decision over Alec Schenk at 197 pounds before Love locked up the dual with his 8-6 decision over Araad Fisher at heavyweight. Virginia will return to action next weekend, going on the road to face No. 11 Virginia Tech in the Commonwealth Clash match at 7 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 16). 10. ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio wrestling team (6-5, 4-2 MAC) earned a 22-15 Senior Day victory over SIUE (1-11, 1-6 MAC) in a Mid-American Conference matchup this afternoon at the Convocation Center. The Bobcats won the first four bouts to jump out to a 14-0 lead. The Cougars countered with four-straight victories to snag a 15-14 lead, but Ohio earned decisive wins in the final two weight classes to seal their fourth MAC victory of the 2018-19 season. Fittingly, senior Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) set the tone with the match opening at 141 pounds, giving the Bobcats a 5-0 lead with a 19-1 win by technical fall over redshirt junior Lucas Bernal. Kelly is now 13-2 on the year -- including a perfect 6-0 in dual meets and 5-0 in conference meets. "He's been consistent throghout," said 22nd year head coach Joel Greenlee of Kelly's career. "From the time he stepped on the mat as a freshman, our first Kent State dual that he ever wrestled in, he beat a ranked guy. He's just kind of climbed from there. I'm excited for him. I think he's getting better and better. I think he's excited for the end of the year and the MAC tournament and national tournament. Redshirt freshman Alec Hagan (Eureka, Mo.) followed with a 6-4 win by decision at 149 over redshirt junior Tyshawn Williams. Hagan is now 15-10 on the year with a 4-2 mark in MAC matches. Redshirt junior Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio) extended the Bobcats' lead to 11-0 by earning a 7-1 win by decision at 157 over freshman Justin Ruffin. Carson improved to 17-6 overall, 8-2 in dual meets and 4-2 in conference matches. Freshman Colt Yinger (Nelsonville, Ohio) made it four-straight wins for Ohio courtesy of a 6-4 win by decision at 165 over redshirt senior Nate Higgins. Yinger improved to 14-6 in his rookie season and picked up his fourth conference victory. The Cougars began chipping away at Ohio's lead however, beginning at 174 with sophomore Kevin Gschwendtner earning an 8-6 win by decision. Freshman Sergio Villalobos then recorded a 5-4 win by decision at 184, senior Christian Dulaney won by fall in 4:20 at 197 and redshirt senior Colton McKiernan registered a 5-3 win by decision at 285. Redshirt junior Shakur Laney (Canal Winchester, Ohio) put the Bobcats back in front, though, logging a 10-3 win by decision at 125 over redshirt junior Gage Datlovsky. Redshirt sophomore Mario Guillen (Perrysburg, Ohio) then locked down the win for Ohio with a dominant 18-1 win by technical fall at 133 over redshirt freshman Jacob Blaha. Guillen is now 14-1 on the season with a 6-1 mark in dual meets and a perfect 5-0 record in MAC matches. "We were fired up for today," said Guillen. "We just came out and felt like we had to prove something. It's always nice wrestling after Shakur because he's pretty good. He puts a show on out there, so that fires me up. I just try not to worry about if people are losing. I try to focus on myself and being ready to go. I just go out there and wrestle and keep scoring points and get the job done." Prior to Saturday's match, the Bobcats honored their 2018-19 Senior Class of Kelly, Arsen Ashughyan (Vanadzor, Armenia), Nate Hall (Lewis Center, Ohio), Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.), Kyle Kaminski (Parma, Ohio), Devin King (Thornville, Ohio), Zack Parker (Felton, Del.) and Austin Reese (Urbana, Ohio). During intermission, Ohio's celebration of the program's 100th season of wrestling culminated in the unveiling of banners in the rafters of the Convo honoring the Bobcats' four national champions -- Kermit Blosser (1932; 191 pounds), Harry Houska (1964; 191 pounds), Andy Daniels (1978; 118 pounds) and Dwight Gardner (1998; 158 pounds). Ohio is scheduled for two road matches next weekend, visiting Bloomsburg for a 7 p.m. ET matchup on Friday (Jan. 15), then traveling to Amherst, N.Y., for its final conference match of 2018-19 against Buffalo on Sunday (Jan. 17) at 1 p.m. ET. 11. ITHACA, N.Y. -- On Senior Day, Ben Honis knocked off third-ranked and unbeaten Patrick Brucki as Cornell raced out to a 34-0 lead and cruised to a 34-7 win over No. 19 Princeton on Saturday afternoon at Friedman Wrestling Center to secure its 17th consecutive Ivy League title. The Big Red improved to 11-2 (5-0 Ivy), while the Tigers slipped to 6-6 (2-1 Ivy). Honis used a late takedown and riding time from a dominant second period on top, then avoided a last-second reversal to hand Brucki his first loss of the year. It came with Cornell already holding a 14-0 team lead and propelled the home team into the break with a nearly insurmountable 21-0 lead. It was the 33rd consecutive victory for Cornell over Princeton. Honis' win was one of two for the Big Red in top 20 matchups. No. 11 Vitali Arujau started the second half of the dual with a dominant victory over No. 10 Patrick Glory, controlling the match before finding a cradle in the second period to earn the fall, one of five bonus point wins for the Big Red on the day. Starting at 165, Andrew Berryesa got the Big Red out to a rocking start, using a throw and a headlock to pin Dale Tiongson 2:33 into the match. An earlier through ended up with Tiongson on top for two, but the second effort by the freshman led to the fall. After Brandon Womack held off Travis Stefanik, Max Dean dominated Kevin Parker with three four-point turns en route to a 16-1 tech fall to set up Honis' upset. Brucki earned a pair of first period takedowns and Honis picked up two escapes to end the first trailing 4-2. Brucki chose bottom and tried to escape quickly, but Honis rolled through and went to work on top. Honis rode out the ranked Tiger grappler to build more than a minute of riding time, as the crowd looked for a second stall call to give Honis a point that did not come. The senior chose bottom to start the third and escaped before losing the riding time edge to get within 4-3. Brucki was able to slide behind for a takedown to go back up 6-4, but Honis tied the match on the scoreboard, getting his two with 22 seconds remaining. Brucki nearly reversed him in the closing seconds, but it was waved off at the buzzer and Honis earned the win with the riding time point. Jeramy Sweany was dominant in a 10-2 major decision victory over Kendall Elfstrum to close out the first half of the dual. Arujau picked up a pair of takedowns in the first, reversed Glory in the second to go up 6-1 before locking up the cradle to putting away his freshman counterpart to continue his rise up the 125 pound ladder. A first period takedown was the difference in Chas Tucker's hard-fought, 3-2 win over Jonathan Gomez at 133 before top-ranked Yianni Diakomihalis cruised to a 14-6 major decision win over Marshall Keller at 141 to make it 34-0. The Tigers won the final two matches, though second-ranked Matthew Kolodzik was pushed to his limit at 149 by Jonathan Furnas before a takedown with eight seconds left handed the Tigers their first victory of the day. They would close with a second, earning a win at 157 by major decision. Cornell continues its regular season-ending stretch of four consecutive matches against top 20 teams when it visits No. 11 Virginia Tech (Friday, Feb. 15 at 6 p.m.) and No. 15 North Carolina (Saturday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m.) next weekend. 12. A Wisconsin judge has ruled that a defending state champion wrestler can continue to compete, overturning a suspension issued by the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association regarding alleged incidents during a wrestling match last weekend. Hayden Halter, a sophomore wrestler at Waterford Union High School who won the 106-pound title at the 2018 Wisconsin state wrestling championships while competing a different high school, will be allowed to compete at the District 1 competition Saturday, the Racine Journal Times reported Friday evening. After a 2.5-hour hearing Friday afternoon, Racine County Circuit Court Judge Michael J. Piontek issued an injunction to block a suspension the WIAA gave Halter last week at the Southern Lakes Conference meet. Halter, who now wrestles at 120 pounds, was crowned the SLC champ last Saturday but was suspended by the WIAA after two incidents during the finals match. In the closing seconds of the match, the referee gave one point to Halter's opponent for an escape. Halter, along with his father Shawn and his coach Tom Fitzpatrick, questioned the call. Halter stood up and said something to the mat official. The wrestler claims he asked the referee, "What was that?" in reference to the escape call, since it appeared Halter still had his arms wrapped around his opponent. However, the official issued an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, claiming that Halter cursed at him. Moments later, after Halter and his opponent shook hands, Halter had his arm raised in victory. He briefly flexed his muscles and yelled "yes!" in celebration. The referee claimed that Halter's flex was a taunt, directed at fans in the stands from Burlington High, his former school where he won his 2018 state title. The official issued a second unsportsmanlike conduct call, which resulted in a one-match suspension. That suspension would have made it impossible for Halter to compete at this weekend's district competition, a qualifying event for the state championships, and therefore not be able to defend his title. Halter's father and coach appealed the suspension immediately after the match. However, under WIAA rules, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty is a judgment call by the referee, and judgment calls cannot be appealed for an official review after the event is concluded. The WIAA can appeal the judge's ruling, although a trial likely wouldn't be held for months. If it succeeds in that appeal, then any victories Halter is awarded during that time can be revoked. But, until a trial can take place, Judge Piontek's restraining order stands, and Halter still has a shot at back-to-back championships... and possibly fulfill his dream of becoming a four-time Wisconsin state titlist. Waterford Union High School -- where Hayden Halter is now enrolled -- is located in southeast Wisconsin, straight west of Racine, and southwest of Milwaukee. It has 1,100 students. UPDATE 2/10/2019 Hayden Halter won the regional title at Pewaukee, pinning two of his three opponents in less than a minute... and keeping his Wisconsin state title hopes alive. Next step on the way to the state championships: the sectional tournament next weekend. UPDATE 2/17/2019 Hayden Halter won the 120-pound crown at the Horlick Sectional. He now will be wrestling at the Wisconsin state championships next weekend in Madison. UPDATE 2/24/2019 Call him champ, again: Hayden Halter won his second Wisconsin state title -- this time at 120 pounds. The Waterford sophomore defeated Pulaski's Cole Gille, 8-3, in the title bout.
  13. A wrestling team's toughest opponent can be winter weather. Just ask the Manistee High School wrestling squad. The MHS Chippewas were headed to individual district competition in north-central Michigan late Friday afternoon when a school van overturned in snowy conditions. The five wrestlers and two adults were transported to Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital to be examined. One wrestler sustained a cut to the hand; no other injuries were reported. The van was heading east on M-55 towards Grayling -- site of the district competition -- when the driver lost control, crossed into the westbound lane, and ended up on its top in a ditch. Michigan State Police cited the driver for driving too fast for conditions. Grayling's Athletic Director told CBS affiliates WWTV/WWUP that Manistee's coach had assured them everyone was OK, and that the Chippewa wrestlers involved in the rollover were still planning on attending the tournament. Manistee is located on Lake Michigan in the northwest portion of Michigan's lower peninsula, about 250 miles northwest of Detroit. The high school has an enrollment of approximately 500 students.
  14. OREM, Utah -- The Wyoming wrestling team picked up an impressive victory on Friday evening, dropping Big 12 foe Utah Valley in a 27-6 dual win. With the win, the Cowboys earn their 14th dual triumph of the 2018-19 season, marking the most dual wins since the 2008-09 campaign. The Cowboys (14-4, 4-2 Big 12) ran off a number of strong individual performances, with Branson Ashworth and Hayden Hastings earning wins over top-12 opponents. The dual also saw 125-pounder Doyle Trout earn an impressive win in his first dual appearance of the season, as well as Jed Loveless picking up the first dual win of his career at 157 pounds. "I thought we wrestled really well," head coach Mark Branch said. "We competed hard, and I thought the guys were emotionally fired up, which is good. We talk a lot about being emotional and wrestling with emotion. I saw a lot of great things." With the dual beginning at 184, freshman Tate Samuelson picked up a nice win over Will Sumner, who is slotted at No. 26 in the NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings. Samuelson scored takedowns in the first and second period on a couple of nice counterattacks to lead 6-1 heading to the final period. The Cowboy closed hard in the third, picking up a third takedown and riding the clock up to over a minute for a 9-3 decision. After Utah Valley earned its first of two victories on the night at 197, Brian Andrews put together a nice bonus point win over Benjamin Andrew in the heavyweight bout. Andrews opened with a strong first period, scoring eight points off a couple of takedowns and a four-point nearfall to lead 8-2 after one. The Cowboy heavyweight kept strong in the second with a full-period rideout with Andrews tacking on a couple more points with another nearfall. Andrews scored another takedown in the final period to finish up the 14-2 major. It marked his third major of the season and ninth bonus point win. In his first dual start of the season against Wolverine Josh Jensen, Trout got on the board in the opening frame with a nice takedown as time wound down in the period to lead 2-0 heading to the second. Jensen responded in the second with a takedown of his own. Leading, 4-2, heading to the final frame, Trout came out of a scramble with a takedown in the final 15 seconds to secure the victory. "Obviously, Doyle jumping in there when we were in need and picking up a big win was inspirational and something that I think really motivated the rest of the team," Branch said. "That was a big boost for us." Matched up with Isaiah Delgado at 133 pounds, redshirt sophomore Montorie Bridges responded to an early Delgado takedown with a couple of his own to end the first period, before tacking on another and a four-point nearfall before the end of the second. Leading, 12-5, in the third, Bridges would give up a takedown midway through the frame to cost him the major decision; however, he still came up with the 13-7 victory -- his 11th consecutive win. At 141 pounds, Sam Turner made quick work of Dylan Gregerson for the second period technical fall -- his first tech of the season. Turner opened hot with a takedown followed by a trio of nearfalls to lead 14-0 after one. Choosing down to open the second, Turner quickly escaped to lock up a 15-0 technical fall and push the Wyoming lead to 18-3 after six matches. Following a Jaron Jensen loss to Landon Knutzen at 149 pounds, Jed Loveless picked up the first dual win of his career with an 8-3 win over Spencer Haywood at 157. Loveless picked up the only two takedowns in the bout, along with a third-period takedown in the final period to all but lock up the victory. In the bout of the night, Branson Ashworth kicked off his senior weekend with an impressive win over No. 9 Demetrius Romero. Ashworth recorded takedowns in the first and second periods to get to the final frame with a 5-0 lead. The Cowboy denied Romero any offensive points, while racking up plenty of riding time on the way to a 6-1 decision. The win was his 14th in a row dating back to Dec. 8, and marked his ninth ranked win this season. "With Branson, I was worried about him being tight wrestling in front of his home state and home fans, friends and family," Branch said. "In those matches, you tend to put a lot of pressure on yourself, but he looked dominant and wrestled exceptionally well. It was great to see him do that." Hayden Hastings ended the night for the Cowboys with a huge win over No. 12 Kimball Bastian. Bastian led throughout most of the first half of the match, scoring on a couple of takedowns over the first five minutes of the bout to lead, 4-3, after two. The third period, however, was all Hastings as the Cowboy capitalized on a match-tying takedown before cutting Bastian loose and converting on another score with 11 seconds left to ride out the clock for the 7-6 win. It was a nice win for Hastings, who after coming up short in narrow losses to Bastian in two previous meetings this season, tallied his third ranked victory of his freshman campaign. "It was nice to see Hayden finish the night off with a big upset," Branch said. "The kid has beaten him twice this year, but I saw a little bit of a different side of Hayden. He was down and he really rose to the occasion. He was confident in putting him back on his feet, and went ahead and won it outright instead of trying to ride him to send it into overtime. When you wrestle with that kind of confidence, good things are going to happen. The Cowboys will be back in action on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. MT, when they play host to South Dakota State at the UniWyo Sports Complex. 15. TEMPE, Ariz. -- Fifth-ranked Mizzou Wrestling improved to a perfect 15-0 with a 30-12 win over Arizona State Friday night (Feb. 8) in Tempe. Mizzou improved its winning streak to 35 consecutive duals and dating back to 2014, Mizzou has won 72 of its last 73 duals. Mizzou picked up pins at 133, 141, 174 and heavyweight. The highlight of the night came at 174 pounds as senior Daniel Lewis pinned the nation's No. 2 wrestler - reigning National Champion Zahid Valencia - in 4:15, extending Mizzou's lead to 21-9. It was Lewis' 11th pin of the year and 47th in his career, second-most in program history. Mizzou won nine of 10 bouts Friday After Mizzou dropped an OT bout at 125 to open the dual, senior 133-pounder John Erneste got things started with a first-period fall, pinning No. 25 Josiah Kline with seven seconds remaining in the initial frame. It was his eight fall of the season and 30th in his career. At 141, junior Jaydin Eierman made it to back-to-back pins for Mizzou, his 12th of the season. He pinned freshman Navonte Demison in just 1:52 to extend Mizzou's lead to 12-3. True freshman Brock Mauller made it three straight wins for Mizzou as he earned hard-fought 8-6 win over Josh Macura, extending Mizzou's lead to 15-3. Mauller improved to 24-1 during his true freshman campaign. In top-25 matchups at 157 and 165, Mizzou came up on the wrong end of a pair of decisions, as Arizona State closed the lead to 15-9. That set up the top-five bout at 174, with Lewis earning his 11th pin of the season. Mizzou closed the dual with a 6-2 decision at 197 from Wyatt Koelling and heavyweight Zach Elam earned his fourth pin of the season to seal the win, needing just 1:29 to do so. 16. STILLWATER -- The No. 2 Oklahoma State wrestling team improved to 13-0 Friday night, shutting out Air Force, 39-0, to wrap up a four-dual home stand at Gallagher-Iba Arena. OSU finished with six bonus point victories as the Cowboys won all 10 bouts and scored 35 total takedowns while surrendering just four. The win marked the ninth time in John Smith's career the Cowboys have won their first 13 duals of a season, and the 15th time it's been accomplished in program history. It was also the second shutout for the Cowboys this season. "It was good," Smith said. "We kind of looked like we didn't know what we were doing on the bottom when the leg came in. ... It's something that we need to work on, but I feel good." In addition to a dominant team performance, Friday's dual also marked the return of Chandler Rogers, who had missed more than a month of action due to injury, and Preston Weigel, who had missed nearly two months. Both wrestlers made the most of their comeback performances as Rogers kicked off the dual with a 6-4 decision at 165 pounds that was sealed by a third-period takedown, and Weigel came away with a 2-0 decision at 197 pounds over Anthony McLaughlin, who entered with the best record on the Air Force team at 10-1. "I felt good," Weigel said. "I think from here I'll just keep on climbing, but just to get that first match out of the way you know, it was fun. I think my conditioning is good. I didn't take any breaks while I was off. I kept training. You have to. You can't just give up. I swear it's just made me stronger and it drives me to get back." Friday night also marked the career dual debut for Cowboy freshman Christian Bahl, who won over Air Force's Randy Meneweather II, 4-3. Heavyweight Derek White made the biggest contribution to the team total, pinning Kayne Hutchison in 6:20 to mark his seventh fall of the season and team-high fourth dual fall this year. Daton Fix and Wyatt Sheets added technical falls at 133 pounds and 157 pounds, respectively, while Jacobe Smith, Kaid Brock and Kaden Gfeller won major decisions at 184, 141 and 149 pounds. 125 pounder Nick Piccininni nearly added another major decision, but came away with a 13-6 win to maintain his unbeaten record at 25-0. Oklahoma State returns to action Feb. 16 as it wraps up its regular season road schedule at Missouri. Following that, the Cowboys host Iowa in the regular season finale at Gallagher-Iba Arena on Feb. 24. Wins in each of the remaining two duals would give Oklahoma State its 46th undefeated season in program history and its first since 2004-05 season. It would also mark the seventh perfect dual season with Coach Smith at the helm. Results: 165: No. 10 Chandler Rogers (OSU) dec. Jacoby Ward (AF), 6-4 174: Christian Bahl (OSU) dec. 17. WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- No. 20 Purdue was strong from start to finish, taking seven weights in a 22-9 win over No. 25 Stanford at Holloway Gymnasium on Friday. Highlighting the Boilermakers' victory were bonus points from No. 11 Dylan Lydy (174), a top-10 upset from No. 12 Christian Brunner (197) and an electrifying win by Jacob Aven (285). Purdue took its dual record to 6-7, while dealing the 7-2 Cardinal just their second loss. Lydy was the first in a string of four straight Boilermaker victories. A third period explosion by Lydy broke open a 4-3 match with Rico Stormer en route to a 14-5 major decision. The 11th-ranked 174-pounder blitzed his opponent with three takedowns and turned for a two-point nearfall in the closing frame. Max Lyon went about his business in the ensuing match at 184 pounds, beating Colbey Harlan 7-2. The sophomore hailing from Dyersville, Iowa, won a career-best seventh straight match, pushing his record to 19-7. A monster double-leg takedown and rideout in the third period ignited the home crowd as Brunner knocked off ninth-ranked Nathan Traxler 4-3. "At the end there, I was up by one and I couldn't build riding time," the Purdue 197-pounder said. "I felt him break; he was not going to try to get to his feet. I felt that I was able to ride it out and win and that is what happened." The win avenges an early season loss to Traxler at the Princeton Open. Growing up 14 miles apart, the history between the East Dundee and St. Charles, Illinois, natives extends beyond the 2018-19 season however. "The match was good, he [Traxler] was actually my wrestling partner growing up," Brunner said. "We have a lot of history; he beat me earlier in the year so it was a big match to go out there and wrestle. I was excited, the crowd definitely helped at the end for the final rideout. It was a fun match and I hope the fans liked it." Aven capped off the Boilermakers' run of four straight by edging Haydn Maley 3-2. The redshirt senior thwarted a late attempt by Maley and his first period takedown held. With the decision, Purdue took a 19-6 lead and Aven received credit for securing the dual victory with two bouts remaining. "It's always good to get a win," Aven said. "We had a non-conference team [in Stanford] coming in here who was 7-1 in dual meets, so it's good to show them what Big Ten Conference wrestling is all about. You have to wrestle through all positions, come out every match and be ready to wrestle. If you don't show up or you're not ready to go, it's going to be tough to win. Good team win tonight." The Boilermakers are back in action on Sunday when they play host to No. 18 Rutgers at 1 p.m. ET. The Scarlet Knights (10-5, 3-3 B1G) captured seven weights from Indiana in a 24-11 win in Bloomington on Friday. Results: 141 / Nate Limmex (Purdue) def. 18. Eric Schultz notched a win at 197 pounds (Photo/Mark Lundy, Lutte-Lens.com) LINCOLN, Neb. -- The No. 6 Nebraska Cornhuskers rebounded from Sunday's defeat against Iowa with a come-from-behind 21-18 win over seventh-ranked Minnesota. The Gophers went up 14-0 early after a pin, tech. fall and decision in the first three matches, but the Huskers won the next six bouts to go up 21-14 to seal the win. Jordan Shearer (149) started the flurry of Husker victories with his best win of the year, a 10-2 major decision over All-American No. 19 Tommy Thorn of Minnesota. The dual ended with a major decision victory at the heavyweight spot for Minnesota to cut the deficit to 21-18, but it was too little, too late as NU had given itself enough of a cushion to secure the victory. "We just kept going and the energy stayed high," Huskers 165-pounder Isaiah White said. "(Jordan) Shearer came in and started us off, (Tyler) Berger pulled out a win, Mikey (Labriola) came up big for us. We had the momentum and just kept it rolling. This is a good win for us." The dual started with a top-20 match at 125 pounds as NU's No. 16 Zeke Moisey grappled with No. 6 Sean Russell of Minnesota. Moisey came out aggressively against Russell, notching two takedowns in the first period to go up 4-1 as he tried to earn his first top-10 victory of the year. Moisey led 5-1 in the third period before Russell took the momentum and the match with a takedown and subsequent pin of Moisey (5:53) to put his team up 6-0. Minnesota took the 133-pound match with a 17-2 tech. fall by No. 8 Ethan Lizak over Jevon Parrish to go up 11-0. NU's No. 19 Chad Red Jr. then dropped a 9-2 decision to No. 10 Mitch McKee as the Gophers built a 14-point cushion. That would be the last match Minnesota would win for a while, however, as the Huskers poured on 21 straight team points. Jordan Shearer (149) had lost all four of his matches against top 20 opponents this year leading up to tonight's bout with No. 19 Tommy Thorn of Minnesota. Shearer went down 2-0 early in the first period after a takedown by Thorn, but reeled off 10-straight points on the way to his second major decision of the season. For the second straight match, No. 2 Tyler Berger (157) found himself tied 1-1 after three periods. In an almost exact imitation of his match against Kaleb Young of Iowa, he took down Minnesota's No. 8 Steve Bleise less than 25 seconds into the first sudden victory period to earn his 20th victory of the season. Mikey Labriola came from behind to defeat Devin Skatzka at 174 pounds (Photo/Mark Lundy, Lutte-Lens.com) No. 6 Isaiah White (165) joined the fun with a 13-5 major decision of his own to bring NU back to within three points of the Gophers. In the 174-pound match, No. 9 Mikey Labriola battled No. 12 Devin Skatzka of Minnesota. Heading into the third period, the redshirt freshman from Easton, Pa., trailed 5-1. After starting on bottom to begin the third period, Labriola earned a reversal and a four-point nearfall to go up 7-5. Skatzka earned one more point on an escape, but Labriola was able to hold him off to win, 7-6. "He (Skatzka) is a guy you're not going to be able to take down a lot, so you just have to stay after it," Labriola said. "I heard Coach Manning yelling at me in the third period, saying 'you can still do this!' and I just went out there and finished it off." Taylor Venz cruised to a 7-0 shutout victory (Photo/Mark Lundy, Lutte-Lens.com) No. 6 Taylor Venz (184) dominated Minnesota's Brandon Krone from start to finish, working a 7-0 decision to put his team up 17-14. No. 11 Eric Schultz closed out the dual for the Huskers with a stellar finish to his match against Gophers 197-pounder Dylan Anderson. Schultz led 2-1 heading into the third period before finishing with a flurry of five consecutive takedowns to go up 13-5. Accumulating 1:20 of riding time, the Tinley Park, Ill., native pushed the dual out of reach with a 14-5 major decision. The consensus No. 1 285-pounder in the country, Minnesota heavyweight Gable Steveson came into tonight's match holding a perfect 24-0 record. That record remained unblemished tonight after he worked a hard-fought 13-5 major decision over NU's No. 10 David Jensen. With the win tonight, the Huskers improve to 11-4 (5-3 Big Ten) and the Gophers fall to 12-3 (5-2 Big Ten). Minnesota will be right back in action against Maryland at Maturi Pavilion in Minneapolis, Minn., on Sunday, while NU gets eight days to prepare for a road trip to No. 2 Ohio State. 19. No. 15 Roman Bravo-Young topped No. 6 Luke Pletcher in the dual's first match (Photo/Sam Janicki, SJanickiPhoto.com) COLUMBUS, Ohio -- No. 1 Penn State (11-0, 7-0 B1G) dominated No. 5 Ohio State (9-2, 5-2 B1G) in one of the biggest duals of the college wrestling season. Penn State controlled the action from start to finish on its way to a convincing 28-9 road win in front of 13,000 fans in Columbus, Ohio. Penn State opened but the dual with two thrilling wins over top-six ranked Buckeyes and rolled from there. The dual meet featured seven bouts pitting ranked wrestlers against each other and Penn State won all seven of them, many for bonus points. The dual began at 133 where true freshman Roman Bravo-Young (Tucson, Ariz.), ranked No. 15 at 133, returned to action after missing some time with an injury and took on No. 6 Luke Pletcher. The Nittany Lion battled Pletcher evenly through seven minutes and an overtime period before escaping in his tie breaker period and then maintaining offensive control of Pletcher for his period to post the thrilling 2-1 (TB) win. The Lions lost a team point, however, when Bravo-Young took off his headgear. Sophomore Nick Lee (Evansville, Ind.), ranked No. 5 at 141, kept Penn State rolling at 141, using a late takedown to post an exciting 7-6 victory over No. 2 Joey McKenna. The two early Lion wins put Penn State up 5-0 after two bouts. Redshirt freshman Jarod Verkleeren (Greensburg, Pa.) got the call at 149 and nearly notched Penn State's third straight big win. Verkleeren battled No. 3 Micah Jordan tough for seven minutes before dropping a hard-fought 10-8 decision, cutting the Lion lead to 5-3. Senior Jason Nolf (Yatesboro, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 157, dismantled No. 6 Ke-Shawn Hayes, rolling to a 21-6 technical fall at the 5:51 mark. Junior Vincenzo Joseph (Pittsburgh, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 165, dominated No. 12 Te'Shawn Campbell, picking up the bout's only four takedowns and racking up 2:12 in riding time to post an 11-2 major decision. Joseph's performance gave Penn State a 14-3 lead at intermission. Junior Mark Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.), ranked No. 1 at 174, built on Penn State's sizeable halftime lead with a dominating 12-4 major decision over No. 18 Ethan Smith. Hall's win gave the Lions an 18-2 lead as Ohio State lost a team point for a late challenge call. Redshirt freshman Mason Manville (Lorton, Va.) moved up from 165 to step in for No. 2 Shakur Rasheed (Coram, N.Y.) at 184 and met No. 1 Myles Martin. Manville battled Martin tough before dropping an 18-6 major decision. Senior Bo Nickal (Allen, Texas), ranked No. 1 at 197, then sent the many Penn State faithful who made the trip to Columbus to their feet with a big win in one of the dual's marquee match-ups. Nickal met No.2 Kollin Moore and, after about ninety seconds, turned a slight Moore shot into a tight cradle. Nickal turned Moore to his back with the move and after :30 of work got the first period pin at the 1:38 mark to put Penn State up 24-6 and clinch the dual. Senior Anthony Cassar (Rocky Hill, N.J.), ranked No. 3 at 285, was impressive at heavyweight, collecting eighth takedowns in a resounding 18-8 major decision over No. 19 Chase Singletary to put Penn State up 28-6. Sophomore Devin Schnupp (Lititz, Pa.) stepped on the mat at 125 and dropped a tough 7-4 decision to Malik Heinselman in the dual's final bout. Penn State won seven of ten bouts to roll to the 28-9 victory. The Nittany Lions owned a lopsided 20-12 edge in takedowns. The Lions picked up eight bonus points off a pin (Nickal's fall over No. 2 Moore), a tech fall (Nolf's over No. 6 Hayes) and three majors (Joseph over No. 12 Campbell, Hall over No. 18 Smith and Cassar over No. 19 Singletary). Nickal's thrilling pin of Moore was his 13th of the year and the 54th of his career. He is second all-time at Penn State, two behind teammate Nolf's 56. The Nittany Lions have now won 56-straight dual meets dating back to the end of the 2014-15 season. Sanderson's Lions won their last dual of that campaign, went 16-0 in 2015-16, went 14-0 in 2016-17 and went 14-0 in 2017-18. Penn State is now 11-0 overall, 7-0 in Big Ten action. Ohio State falls to 9-2, 5-2 B1G. Bravo-Young and Pletcher worked the middle of the mat for the first minute-plus. Bravo-Young stepped back from a couple early Pletcher shots and was denied on a slight effort of his own at the 1:15 mark. The twosome battled evenly for the final minute-plus and the bout moved to the second period scoreless. Tied 0-0, Bravo-Young chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 1-0 lead. Pletcher worked Bravo-Young's shoulders to the mat at the 1:15 mark but the Lion was able to force a stalemate and action resumed neutral. Bravo-Young tried another duck under but Pletcher defended the shot and the bout moved to the second period with Bravo-Young leading 1-0. Trailing by one, Pletcher chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 1-1 tie. The duo traded shots and counter shots as the clock moved below 1:00 with neither wrestler breaking through. Bravo-Young scrambled through a late shot as time expired but Pletcher was able to step back and kill the clock. The first sudden victory period was highlighted by a late Pletcher shot that Bravo-Young rolled out of as time expired, sending the bout to a tie breaker. Bravo-Young chose down to start his tie breaker and quickly escaped to a 2-1 lead. Pletcher chose down for his period and Bravo-Young maintained control until the :08 mark. He was hit with a first stall warning, forcing a reset. Bravo-Young was able to keep Pletcher down for the final seconds and posted the thrilling 2-1 (tb) win. Bravo-Young was dinged for taking off his headgear and Penn State was deducted a team point. 141: Sophomore Nick Lee (Evansville, Ind.), ranked No. 5 at 141, met No. 2 Joey McKenna. The duo battled evenly for the first half of the period. McKenna connected on a low single and took an early 2-1 lead after a quick Lee escape. Lee intensified his offense and forced McKenna into a stall for fleeing the mat at the 1:10 mark. The twosome battled evenly for the rest of the period and McKenna led 2-1 after one. McKenna chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 3-1 lead. Lee dove in on a fast single, connected on it and tied the match 3-3. But Ohio State challenged the call and the officials overturned it. Trailing 3-1 still, Lee pressed the action over the next minute. McKenna got in on a high single and turned a scramble into a takedown and a 5-1 lead. Lee quickly escaped to a 5-2 score and the bout moved to the third period with Lee trailing 5-2. Lee chose down to start the third period and worked his way to an escape and a 5-3 score. Lee then bulled through a high double, tied the score at 5-5 and then cut McKenna loose to a 6-5 McKenna lead with 1:10 to wrestle. Lee moved in on offense, took the Buckeye down with a fast low shot and took a 7-6 lead with :30 on the clock. The Lion sophomore then controlled the Buckeye on top for the final seconds and posted the thrilling 7-6 win. 149: Redshirt freshman Jarod Verkleeren (Greensburg, Pa.) got the call at 149 and took on No. 3 Micah Jordan. Jordan notched the first takedown at the 2:00 mark, opening up 2-0 lead in front of the Ohio State bench. Verkleeren escaped to a 2-1 score, but Jordan was able to work his way through a high single for another takedown and a 4-2 lead with :55 on the clock. Verkleeren picked up a point on unnecessary roughness (hands to the face) and trailed 4-3 after one period. Verkleeren chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 4-4 tie. He gave up a point on stalling and trailed 5-4 and then worked his way in on a high single. He finished off the takedown and took a 6-5 lead, which Jordan tied with an escaped. Verkleeren then gave up a point on hands to the face and the ranked Buckeye led 7-6 at the :40 mark. The twosome battled evenly for the final seconds and Jordan led 7-6 after two periods. Jordan chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to an 8-6 lead. Verkleeren countered a Jordan shot, worked his way into control of Jordan's feet and nearly scored twice with Jordan's shoulders towards the mat. But the scramble ended in a stalemate with :50 left and action resumed neutral. Jordan worked his way in on a shot but Verkleeren countered, rolled through the move and took Jordan Down to tie the bout.
