  1. Brock Mauller earned a 10-3 win over Wyoming's Jaron Jensen (Photo/Mark Lundy, Lutte-Lens.com) COLUMBIA, Mo. - No. 10 Mizzou Wrestling (5-0, 1-0 MAC) improved to 5-0 on the season after winning its first two home contests of the season. The Tigers defeated No. 21 Central Michigan, 30-6, to start off their Mid-American Conference season at 1-0. Mizzou finished the night with a 29-3 win over (RV) Wyoming. Head Coach Brian Smith put another exclamation point on his historic career at the helm of Mizzou, earning career win No. 300 in his 23 seasons with the Tigers. Mizzou recorded nine wins over ranked opponents, including two victories over top-10 opponents. Redshirt junior Allan Hart defeated Central Michigan's No. 9 Dresden Simon by a 4-2 decision and redshirt sophomore Zach Elam defeated Wyoming's No. 9 Brian Andrews by a 2-0 decision. Redshirt junior Matt Schmitt went 2-0 on the day, including a victory by major decision over Central Michigan's No. 14 Andrew Marten. Redshirt sophomore Jeremiah Kent also had dominating performances, winning his first match of the night by fall, followed by a win over Wyoming's No. 19 Tate Samuelson in his second match. Rocky Elam scores with a big throw against CMU's Landon Pelham (Photo/Mark Lundy, Lutte-Lens.com) Freshman Rocky Elam earned his first career wins, with victories over Central Michigan's No. 26 Landon Pelham and Wyoming's No. 14 Stephen Buchanan. Freshman Keegan O'Toole also recorded his first career triumphs in the Hearnes Center, including a win by 21-5 technical fall over the Chippewas' Alex Cramer. The Tigers also won 10 extra matches against both Central Michigan and Wyoming while the traditional duals took place. Hear From Head Coach Brian Smith On earning career win No. 300 at the helm of Mizzou… "I've had some really good young men wrestle for me. I think of the support we've had from the fanbase. All the great administration at Mizzou that has been with me for these 23 years. I've been able to raise my family here and work for a great institution. I'm really blessed. When people say 'Coach Smith has 300 wins,' it's not. It takes a great organization to do something like this. There are so many great people that have helped me. From assistant coaches, to director of operations, to strength coaches. I've been really blessed." Hear From 157-Pound Junior Jarrett Jacques On finally returning and competing inside Hearnes again… "It was a lot of fun. We were all pretty excited to compete again, whether it's at home or away. It obviously feels better to be at home and have your fans here. It's comfortable to be in this atmosphere. I'm excited for more to come." Hear From 149-Pound Junior Brock Mauller On Coach Smith earning his 300th career win at Mizzou… "It's great. For him as a coach and being here so long, he has done great things. I'm just happy to be wrestling for him." 2. PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Nine months after the 2019-20 college wrestling season was abruptly canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic, the No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team rolled to a 26-10 win over No. 15 Rutgers in its return to the competition mat on Friday night (Jan. 8) at the Rutgers Athletic Center. The Wolverines claimed seven individual bouts, including six of the first seven, and earned bonus points in three. Freshman Dylan Ragusin set the tone with a quick first-period fall in his collegiate debut, pinning 20th-ranked Nicolas Aguilar at the 1:01 mark at 125 pounds. Ragusin, who captured a USA Wrestling freestyle junior national title this fall after also reaching the senior national final, hit a standing cow catcher and tossed Aguilar to his back in the opening minute before settling in for the quick pin. Senior/junior Jack Medley, ranked 13th nationally at 125 pounds, bumped up to defeat Devon Britton, 10-5, at 133 pounds. He scored four takedowns -- two apiece in the first and third periods -- and accumulated 3:09 in riding-time advantage in his season debut. Rutgers got on the board with a major decision from fourth-ranked Sebastian Rivera at 141 pounds before the Wolverines reeled off four straight match wins at the middleweights to clinch the dual win. Fifth-year senior Kanen Storr, ranked sixth at 149 pounds, toughed out a 4-2 decision against Mike Van Brill after earning a reversal and rideout in the first tiebreaker. Junior/sophomore Will Lewan, ranked ninth nationally, followed with a decisive 11-5 win against Robert Kanniard at 157 pounds. Lewan, who along with Storr, was an NWCA Second Team All-American last season, broke it open with a pair of four-point sequences on the second period, reversing Kanniard to his back early in the frame before going feet-to-back on the edge a minute later. He finished with two takedowns, a reversal, four back points and 1:46 riding-time advantage. Sophomore/freshman Cameron Amine, ranked 17th nationally, was victorious in his varsity debut at 165 pounds, cruising to a 10-4 decision against Brett Donner behind three takedowns, a reversal and 2:18 in riding-time advantage. Sixth-year senior Logan Massa, ranked second at 174 pounds cruised to a 13-5 major decision against Joe Grello in his return to the Wolverine lineup after taking an Olympic redshirt in 2019-20. The Wolverine All-American gave up the first takedown in an early scramble but responded with five of his own, including two apiece in the second and third periods, and rode for 1:52 on the bonus point. After a pair of Scarlet Knight decision wins at 184 and 197 pounds, junior heavyweight Mason Parris, ranked second, closed out the dual with an 11-3 major decision over Christian Colucci. Parris, a 2020 NWCA First Team All-American, scored on four takedowns -- with three in the first period and another late in the third off a sloppy Rutgers reshot before riding out the bout for the bonus win. The Wolverines (1-0) will wrap up the weekend road swing -- their only two-date weekend of the season -- with an 11 a.m. slate on Sunday (Jan. 10) against Maryland at the XFINITY Center in College Park, Md. The dual will be streamed live on Big Ten Network Plus. 4. OREM, Utah -- The 25th ranked Northern Colorado wrestling team swept a tri-dual against Utah Valley and California Baptist on Friday afternoon to improve to 3-0 on the year. The Bears dominated California Baptist 35-3 before taking down host Utah Valley 19-16. UNC's first Big 12 win of the year came thanks in part to key wins by extra points. Northern Colorado and Utah Valley split the matches at five apiece, but the Bears' four wins by major decision to UVU's one was the difference in the team score. Northern Colorado dominated CBU in the first dual of the day winning nine of the 10 matches. Mosha Schwartz turned in one of the best days for the team with a pin at 3:26 against CBU and then started a streak of three straight major decisions for UNC against Utah Valley. His 10-0 win featured a pair of takedowns and a four-point near fall in the third period to get the team rolling. Chris Sandoval and Andrew Alirez followed Schwartz's lead with 12-4 and 16-4 major decisions, respectively. Both recorded four takedowns against Utah Valley with Alirez adding in a four-point near fall early on. The duo went undefeated on the day recording decision wins against CBU. Alan Clothier and Jacob Seely came up with key wins late for UNC to secure the dual over the Wolverines. Clothier had his second major decision of the day, 13-4, over Hunter Morse. He won his match against California Baptist 15-5. Over the two matches, he recorded 12 takedowns. Seely pushed Northern Colorado's lead to 19-13 with this hard-fought decision win over Jacob Armstrong 5-3. He went 2-0 on the day with his 9-1 major decision over CBU. Dalton Robertson was the only other Bear with a fall on the day. He pinned California Baptist's Zach Schrader in the first period at 2:28. He then went on to gut out a tough 3-0 loss to Utah Valley after twisting his knee in the first period to conserve the Northern Colorado win. What's Ahead It's Big 12 duals from here on out for Northern Colorado. The Bears head to Colorado Springs next Sunday for a tri-dual against South Dakota State and Air Force. 5. OREM, Utah -- The Utah Valley University wrestling team won six of the 10 bouts including four by bonus points en route to recording a 25-16 victory over California Baptist on Friday morning at Lockhart Arena. The dual meet marked the first of a three duals on the day that the Wolverines are hosting between UVU, CBU and No. 25 Northern Colorado. Opening up at 125 pounds, two-time NCAA qualifier and ninth-ranked Wolverine Taylor LaMont helped UVU get off to a strong start with an 11-2 major decision over Dilan Ajtun to give the Wolverines a 4-0 advantage. LaMont picked up four takedowns as well as over two-and-a-half minutes of riding time to record the bonus-point win. Redshirt freshman Ty Smith then added to UVU's lead with a quick first-period fall over CBU's Brandon Paulson (1:37) to extend Utah Valley's advantage to 10-0. After a takedown got Paulson square on his back, Smith then quickly secured the fall to record another bonus-point win for UVU. CBU then responded with a fall from Chaz Hallmark at 141 pounds to make it a 10-6 team score, but back answered sophomore 149-pounder Cameron Hunsaker for UVU with a hard fought 3-2 decision to extend Utah Valley's lead to 13-6. Trailing CBU's AJ Raya 2-1 after the first period, Hunsaker then picked up an escape point in the second and followed by riding Raya out in the third to lock up riding time and record the victory. UVU then picked up two more victories at 157 and 165 from freshmen Danny Snediker and Kekana Fouret to extend its advantage to 20-6. In his first match in Orem, the true freshman Snediker looked strong on his way to picking up a 12-4 major decision over CBU's Zach Rowe. The redshirt freshman Fouret then followed with a 3-0 decision with a second-period escape and a late takedown to record his first collegiate dual meet victory over Josh Grant. After opening his 2020-21 season with a 3-0 outing and a title at the Cal Poly Round Robin event last weekend, fifth-ranked senior Demetrius Romero remained undefeated in his opening contest of the day with a 17-2 technical fall victory over CBU's Louis Rojas. Romero racked up a trio of takedowns, a pair of four-point nearfalls, a reversal, and riding time point on his way to picking up the tech fall win and extending UVU's lead to 25-6. Following back-to-back wins from CBU's Caden Gerlach at 184 and Evan Bockman at 197, sophomore heavyweight Chase Trussell then found himself in a battle with CBU's Zach Schrader in the final bout of the match. With the score deadlocked at 2-2 at the end of regulation, overtime was needed to determine a victor. The senior Schrader then used his experience to lock up the winning takedown in the first sudden victory period to win by a score of 4-2 and make the final team score tally 25-16. LaMont, Smith, Snediker and Romero all won their respective bouts by bonus points for the Wolverines in the contest. UVU improves to 1-0 on the year while CBU drops to 0-1. The Wolverines will continue the day by hosting Big 12 Conference foe and the 25th-ranked Northern Colorado Bears at 2:30 p.m. MT. A neutral-site contest between CBU and UNC will also be held at 12:45 p.m. MT. Both duals will be streamed live on the WAC Digital Network and FloWrestling. 6. Jordan Burroughs gets his hand raised after beating David Taylor at the U.S. Open in 2014 (Photo/John Sachs, Tech-Fall.com) Saturday's Jordan Burroughs vs. David Taylor match has been postponed. FloWrestling announced the much-anticipated showdown between the two world champions has been moved from Saturday to Wednesday, Jan. 13. It will now take place in Lincoln, Nebraska. Taylor posted a video announcing that he was "contact traced" and unable to travel to Austin, Texas, for Saturday's match. Saturday's main event will now be Adeline Gray vs. Tamyra Mensah-Stock. Gray is a five-time world champion, while Mensah-Stock is a 2019 world champion.
  7. Olympic and four-time world champion Jordan Burroughs faces off this Saturday against fellow American and world champion David Taylor in what is arguably the most anticipated PPV matchup in modern wrestling history. Burroughs, who competes at 74 kilograms (163 pounds), and Taylor who competes at 86 kilograms, will meet at Taylor's s weight. The obvious advantage is to Taylor, but it's important to factor in Burroughs being at a higher walking around weight of ~80 kilograms. Weight aside the matchup provides fans -- largely still starving for competitions -- the opportunity to watch one of the best what-if's in the sport bear out on the mats. COVID has left an awful mark on our nation and our sport. Putting aside a moment the negative impacts, it's important to see that the adaptations made have added something to our overall wrestling community's outlook on the future of event making. Burroughs vs. Taylor is something of a silver lining that the time and space provided by the dearth of international competitions has enabled the country's biggest stars to compete in what is essentially a pride-only match. No matter who wins there is no reckoning to be had about Olympic spots or dings to one's self-confidence. On the mat the predictions have been everywhere, but the favorite sentiment among fans seems to be "heart is with Burroughs, head is with Taylor." While the justification would vary among individuals the instinct is that Burroughs will always find a way to win and having faced and beaten Taylor last time would easily do it again. Alas, that Taylor and this Taylor are far different animals, and then there is the weight. The technical breakdowns could last 4000 words and two hours of video, but the keys to victory are pretty clear. Burroughs will need to finish double legs definitively and avoid at all costs getting stuck under Taylor while attempting any single legs. Burroughs, coming over top and finding an ankle from the outside is a great start, but if he lingers below and allows Taylor time to find an edge it'll be a difficult scramble for Burroughs to win. For Taylor there needs to be some type of molasses added to Burroughs' level changes. If he tries to match and mistimes it'll spell disappointment. Putting hands on Burroughs will allow Taylor head pressure that can also direct the action where he chooses, rather than be reactionary to his faster opponent. Taylor will also want to find some offense. Burroughs has spectacular defense from a distance but is less effective the deeper the action goes. Putting Burroughs' weight on his back leg by driving on a single leg and crunching down on an angle will give Taylor the momentum he needs to keep Burroughs close during the finish. No matter the outcome I'm interested in the matchup, the match, and the post bout interviews. The co-main event is also a must-see, with five-time world champion Adeline Gray meeting defending world champion Tamyra Mensah-Stock. I covered the matchup in last week's bag, but from a larger perspective I'm very appreciative that FloWrestling was able to make this happen. The ability to watch the top women compete will give a larger number of American wrestling fans a real connection to the athletes heading into the 2021 Olympic Games. That could mean more T-shirt purchases to help support their training, or simply following on Instagram. We live in the attention economy and these wrestlers deserve the opportunity to be seen by more of our die-hard fan base. Their inclusion in the event is a big moment for women's wrestling in the United States. To your questions … Q: Predictions for the Burroughs vs. Taylor card? -- Mike C. Foley: My predictions are below. Mitch McKee df. Tristan Moran, 3-1 Ronna Heaton df. Desiree Zavala, 9-4 Nate Jackson df. Wynn Michalak, via tech fall Seth Gross df. Zane Richards, 11-3 Matt McDonough df. Ethan Lizak, 6-2 Joey McKenna df. Nahshon Garrett, 7-0 Erin Golston df. Emily Shilson, 6-5 James Green df. Pat Lugo, 8-4 J'den Cox df. Hayden Zillmer, 9-0 Adeline Gray df. Tamyra Mensah-Stock, 5-2 Jordan Burroughs df. David Taylor, 3-2 Q: How do you think the Yianni Diakomihalis vs. Anthony Ashnault will go Friday night? -- Mike C. Foley: Yianni! The guy has all the right moves for a massive career on the freestyle circuit. Assuming that he's in decent shape and ready for Ashnault's strength I think the matchup favors Yianni in 9/10 matches. The one factor that Ashnault brings to the match is a real understanding of Yianni's scrambling style and instincts. I think Yianni is almost unmatched in his creativity, but I also see that the Americans who've done well in the college arena tend to also perform better against our top guys than some of the international competition. I tend to think it's the familiarity. MULTIMEDIA HALFTIME Jordan Burroughs on the Joe Rogan Experience? Tom Brands Press Conference Tom Brands speaking at Iowa's media day (Photo/Iowa Athletics) Q: What did you think of Tom Brands' media day press conference? What was the "propaganda" he was referring to just before the 10-minute mark? -- Mike C. Foley: Oh, he was 100% percent talking about Penn State and their fan base. No question. I think we are in a place where it's OK to say that Tom Brands is in a position where he has an active dislike of all things State College. He's probably personalizing any perceived slights, but that's just how it goes sometimes. I for one love me a good rivalry. There was some feedback about Tom's COVID comments, but I think they were measured and largely correct. I believe that Tom Brands understands the deadliness of COVID and that he wants to protect his wrestlers and their families from any harm the virus might cause. I also think that as an educator he's seeing the impact that not wrestling is having on some of his athletes. This is their life. This is his life. Being on the mats is akin to breathing. I still remember the heartache of having my fifth year being (briefly) stolen from me -- if they are feeling even a fraction of that pain then there is no faulting a coach who wants to see that alleviated through providing them a purpose-driven season. Tom is a competitor and loves the sport, full-stop. He just wants the opportunity to have his kids get out there and kick somebody's butt. Not to mention he wants to win an NCAA title, which he would have done last year, and is primed to do in 2021. Q: What can you tell us about the Henri Deglane? Who is going and what is happening? Bobby O. Foley: The Henri Deglane will be the first international wrestling tournament for Team USA since international sports was shut down in mid-March. The tournament has been competitive for several years, but in 2021 it will look to host a larger-than-normal constituency of athletes from Europe and the Americas. Key among the entries will be Team Cuba and Team Azerbaijan, each of whom are bringing entire teams. Team Turkey will also bring a large group, including Riza Kayaalp. I'd suspect there will be more than a few Americans facing each other in the tournament, but also remember that every wrestler will be guaranteed at least two matches, which reduces the letdown from a possible first-round matchup with a training partner or countrymen. Also, the freestyle weights are fairly robust with wrestlers from Italy, Spain, and France which gives our wrestlers a new feel before facing off against Turkey and Azerbaijan. I'll be on-site to do interviews with some athletes we are featuring in documentaries this spring, namely Mijain Lopez. The USA Wrestling social media accounts and the UWW social media accounts will (fingers crossed) be updating results and sending out usable links to the livestream. However, it's important to remember that neither body is hosting the event -- that's the job of the French Wrestling Federation. Watch today for the full entry list.

  9. Saturday: Jordan Burroughs vs. David Taylor, Adeline Gray vs. Tamyra Mensah-Stock (Photos/Tony Rotundo, WrestlersAreWarriors.com) The college folkstyle season is finally starting to pick up steam, but that will not prevent yet another domestic freestyle event. FloWrestling presents a 11-match card headlined by a rivalry match between Jordan Burroughs facing off against David Taylor on Saturday. The two world champions are both favorites to win spots on the upcoming Olympic team at 74 and 86 kilograms respectively. Before that, they will need to revisit their extensive rivalry. The following is a match-by-match preview of the event. 155 pounds: Mitch McKee vs. Tristan Moran McKee has been active on the domestic wrestling circuit since finishing up his collegiate eligibility at Minnesota. His post-college career started at the Rumble on the Rooftop show with a 6-2 victory over Nick Dardanes. McKee returned to action this past November against collegiate rival Max Murin and dropped a 4-2 decision. He then represented the Minnesota Storm at the RTC and split a pair of matches with a 15-6 win over Kevin Jack and a 14-4 loss against Sammy Sasso. While at Minnesota, McKee was a two-time All-American with his best finish coming when he finished sixth as a junior. As a senior this past season at Wisconsin, Moran finished as a Second Team All-American. He went 21-7 and qualified for the NCAA tournament through the Big Ten. His collegiate career started at Oklahoma State where he spent three years before transferring to Wisconsin. As a senior, Moran picked up victories over the likes of Chad Red, Zach Sherman and Grant Leeth. McKee and Moran met three times on the collegiate mats. The Minnesota representative won the first match by fall during the 2019 season. Their first rematch came at the Big Ten tournament. This time Moran won a 7-6 decision. This past season, McKee pulled ahead with a 7-6 decision of his own. Not only does McKee have the advantage in the series, but he always performs better in freestyle. He should be able to score early and often in this match from both neutral and the top position. Prediction: McKee VSU1 over Moran 61 kilograms: Ronna Heaton vs. Desiree Zavala Heaton has had a very strong 2020. She finished second at Senior Nationals before entering the U23 Nationals and taking home the tournament title. Heaton then headlined the second Wisconsin RTC Underground show against Koral Sugiyama and scored a 10-7 victory. On the agre-group level, Heaton was also a two-time cadet world medalist after winning gold in 2015 and silver in 2016. Zavala has wrestled on a pair of freestyle cards this year. She dropped a 14-10 match against Jennifer Page on the debut NLWC show in what was a wild match. Zavala then dropped a 10-0 match against Macey Kilty on the undercard of the 195-pound 8-Man Challenge show. The highlight of her 2020 so far has been a gold medal at U23 Nationals where she bested Sophia Smith, Paige Respicio and Sugiyama by a combined 31-0 score. This has the potential to be a very exciting match. Both wrestlers score a lot of points and end up in more shootouts than their coaches would probably like. Heaton should likely be the favorite due to her international credentials, but there are a wide range of possibilities in this one. Prediction: Heaton VPO1 over Zavala 215 pounds: Nate Jackson vs. Wynn Michalak Jackson has had both an active and successful 2020. He finished second at Senior Nationals and also competed in the 195-pound 8-Man Challenge, NLWC 3 and the RTC Cup. Along the way, Jackson has picked up victories over the likes of Sammy Brooks, Ketih Gavin, Drew Foster and Brett Pfarr. Michalak was a three-time All-American at Central Michigan with his best finish coming during his senior season. That year, he finished second at 197 pounds. He continued to compete on the freestyle circuit and won Senior Nationals in 2015. In his last action, Michalak finished seventh at the 2019 Senior Nationals with wins over Michael Boykin, Tim Smith and Jeremiah Imonode. Jackson has been much more active recently and comes into this match with a bit of momentum. Michalak will give him a tough test but look for Jackson to push the pace and take this bout. Prediction: Jackson VPO over Michalak 61 kilograms: Seth Gross vs. Zane Richards Gross had some ups and downs during 2020, but he finished the year with a big victory. He faced off against Thomas Gilman in the main event of WRTC Underground 2 in what could potentially be a preview of the 57-kilogram Olympic Team Trials preview. Gilman was the aggressor throughout, but Gross slipped out of several offensive attacks. In the end, Gross took the match 4-4 on criteria. During the year, the former NCAA champion also picked up victories over the likes of Bryce Meredith, Zach Sanders and Darian Cruz. Richards finished 2019 by going 3-2 at that year's Senior Nationals with wins over Austin Miller, Jacob Moran and Eddie Kilmara. He returned to action mid-2020 on the Rumble on the Rooftop card. On that date, Richards engaged in a wild back-and-forth match against Sanders, and he ultimately won 13-11. The former Illinois wrestler finished his collegiate eligibility in 2017 with a seventh-place finish to become an All-American for the second time. Not only should Gross be the favorite in this contest, but the style should make for an exciting match. Richards is not afraid to engage in risky positions. This should allow Gross many opportunities to score and ultimately take the match. Prediction: Gross VSU1 over Richards 143 pounds: Ethan Lizak vs. Matt McDonough Lizak has picked up his pace over the last few months and wrestled in three events. Unfortunately for him, he has had some struggles. Lizak started 2020 late at Senior Nationals where he went 2-2. He picked up victories over Earl Hall and Michael Jaffe but dropped matches against Jaydin Eierman and Chad Red. Lizak returned on the debut show for the Pittsburgh WC and dropped a 4-1 match against Micky Phillippi. In his last action, the former NCAA runner up dropped a 4-3 decision against Kamol Begakov. McDonough will be returning to competitive action for the first time since 2015. The two-time NCAA champion finished his college career at Iowa back in 2013. He won titles as both a freshman and a junior and was a three-time All-American. On the international circuit, his best finish was a bronze medal at the 2014 University World Championships. This is an interesting match since both wrestlers really represent different generations of college wrestling. McDonough has been out of high-level action for so long, it is hard to see him have success here. However, in his prime, he would have the ability to get to legs and finish takedowns against Lizak, Prediction: Lizak VPO1 over McDonough 65 kilograms: Nahshon Garrett vs. Joey McKenna After finishing sixth at the 2019 Senior Nationals, Garrett's action in 2020 consisted solely of a performance at the RTC Cup. At the event, he went 2-3 with victories over Seth Gross and Zach Sanders. However, he also dropped a pair of matches against Vito Arujau as well as a bout against Jack Mueller. Garrett won an NCAA title during his senior year at Cornell and won Final X in 2018. McKenna's year got off to a tough start in 2020. He dropped an 8-2 match against Tyler Berger on the debut Wrestling Underground show in August. However, McKenna bounced back with a strong performance at Senior Nationals. He finished third with victories over Caleb Craig, Kevon Davenport, Jaden Abas, Chad Red, Nick Dardanes, Jaydin Eierman and Yahya Thomas. McKenna's only defeat came against Andrew Alirez. During his collegiate career at both Ohio State and Stanford, he was a three-time All-American and one-time NCAA finalist. Garrett should have a speed and quickness advantage on the feet. However, McKenna will be the larger wrestler and has always had solid defense. Garrett might be able to get on the board early, but once McKenna gets a feel for the pace, he should be able to pull it out. Prediction: McKenna VPO1 over Garrett 51 kilograms: Emily Shilson vs. Erin Golston This past year Shilson wrestled in Senior Nationals, U23 Nationals and Junior Nationals. She finished sixth on the senior level but won titles at both age-group levels. On the way to those titles she outscored her opponents by a combined 80-6 score. Shilson also wrestled at Beat the Streets and the undercard of the 195 pound 8-Man Challenge card with victories over Charlotte Fowler and Stefana Jelacic respectively. Golston is a three-time junior world medalist who moved up to the senior level after winning a silver medal in 2013. During the 2019 season, she scored silver medals at the Dan Kolov-Nikola Petrov tournament, the Pan American Championships and the Bill Farrell Memorial International. This past year, Golston wrestled on a pair of streamed cards. At the HWC Showdown Open, she scored a dominant 10-0 victory over Devyn Gomez. Golston returned at WRTC Underground 2 and took home a 7-1 victory over Maria Vidales. Shilson has a bright future ahead of her, but this match might be too much too soon. Golston is now a seasoned veteran at this point, and she should be able to use her physical advantages to make this a low scoring bout. If she can control the pace and position, she should be able to take a close victory. Prediction: Golston VPO1 over Shilson 152 pounds: James Green vs. Pat Lugo Green's 2020 started prior to the pandemic shutdowns. The two-time world medalist entered the Matteo Pellicone but dropped his first match against Yones Emamichoghaei. Green returned to action in November at the HWC Showdown Open and defeated Alex Marinelli. He then joined the joint SERTC and NJRTC team for the RTC Cup. At the event, Green went 3-2 with victories over Brayton Lee and Anthony Echemendia. In his last action, the former Nebraska wrestler entered the 150-pound 8-Man Challenge. Green won his first two matches over Bryce Meredith and Alec Pantaleo, but he came up short in the finals against Bajrang Punia. Lugo appeared to be on the way to an NCAA title during his senior season at Iowa. Unfortunately, the tournament never materialized, and he had to settle for a First Team All-American honor from the NWCA. He then transitioned to freestyle and picked up a pair of impressive victories. Lugo took a 5-0 victory over Luke Pletcher at the Rumble on the Rooftop. He returned at the HWC Showdown Open and scored a 7-2 victory over Matt Kolodzik. Lugo then took a late-notice slot in the 150-pound 8-Man Challenge but dropped his opening match against eventual champion Bajrang. This bout might be a strength vs. strength situation. Both wrestlers like to get in the ties and dominate physically. Due to a slight size difference, the edge in that position will likely favor Green. On top of that, he has a vast edge in terms of freestyle experience. If he gets on top position, he could make a difference with his lace. Prediction: Green VPO1 over Lugo 97 kilograms: J'den Cox vs. Hayden Zillmer Cox started 2020 with a strong showing at the Granma y Cerro Pelado. He defeated Reineris Salas, Jacob Kasper and Yonger Bastida to claim the tournament title. The two-time world champion was set to return at the RTC Cup. However, shortly before the event, Cox announced that had received a positive COVID test. Cox returns to action here for the first time since that test result in his quest to a second Olympic team. Zillmer recently finished third at the 2020 Senior Nationals. Along the way, he picked up wins over the likes of Tim Dudley and Eric Schultz. His only defeat came in the semifinals against Kollin Moore. Zillmer returned to action at the RTC Cup. There he went 3-1 with victories coming over Ty Walz, Michael Macchiavello and Dudley. At his best, Zillmer is a tough defensive wrestler who is a tough out for anyone. In that sense, he should be a good test for Cox who is returning from a layoff. However, Cox holds multiple victories over Zillmer, so the result should not be in doubt. Prediction: Cox VSU1 over Zillmer 76 kilograms: Adeline Gray vs. Tamyra Mensah-Stock Gray is a seven-time world medalist and five-time world champion who is still looking for her first Olympic medal. This past year she competed in two events. At the Pan American Championships, she won her first two matches before taking an injury default in the finals. Gray returned at Senior Nationals and won all three of her matches in under six minutes total. Mensah-Stock is a two-time world medalist in her own right. In 2019 she brought through and won a gold medal at 68 kilograms. She had a limited 2020 that saw her compete at the Matteo Pellicone and Pan American Championships. In the first of the two tournaments, she wrestled her way to the finals and picked up an impressive victory over Blessing Oborududu but ultimately finished second. Mensah-Stock returned at the Pan American Championships and dominated her way through the field. She won the tournament with three falls along the way. A battle of world champions is always a treat, but it is even more interesting when it happens during domestic competition. Mensah-Stock does her best work when she is able to use her physical advantages and get to her leg attacks. Unfortunately, there are several factors working against here. Gray wrestles at a higher weight, has an equally physical style and has a much more diverse offense. Prediction: Gray VPO1 over Mensah-Stock 86 kilograms: Jordan Burroughs vs. David Taylor Burroughs began 2020 with a dominant performance at the Pan American Championships. The eight-time world/Olympic medalist won all three of his matches including an 8-1 win over rival Franklin Gomez. Burroughs returned to action against Zahid Valencia this past November. He fell behind the two-time NCAA champion early but stormed back to take the match 8-5. Burroughs has held down the U.S. spot at 74 kilograms since 2011, but he is expected to face his toughest domestic path during this Olympic cycle. Taylor returned from injury for the first time last March. The 2018 world champion qualified the 86-kilogram weight class for the upcoming Olympics with a 3-0 performance at the 2020 Pan American Olympic Qualification tournament where he defeated both Pedro Ceballos and Yurieski Torreblanca. Taylor looked equally dominant in an 11-0 victory over Myles Martin in July. However, he struggled against veteran Gabe Dean on the third NLWC show this past November. Burroughs and Taylor have a history. The former Nebraska wrestler owns a 4-0 edge over Taylor with their last meeting coming in the finals of the 2014 World Team Trials. Burroughs won the best-of-three series with a 2-0 sweep. In their final bout, Burroughs got on the board first with a blast double while on the shot clock. Taylor evened things with a counter takedown off a short shot. In the second period, the former Penn State wrestler pulled ahead with a single-leg attempt that led to a step out. Burroughs regained the lead with a re-shot single that he finished on the edge. He then iced it with another double in the middle of the mat. Not only was that match a long time ago, but both wrestlers have changed quite a bit. Burroughs has somewhat moved away from his blast double, but he is still able to get to legs and finish. On the other hand, Taylor has put on significant weight and moved up to 86 kilograms. In his recent bout against Valencia, Burroughs appeared to have some trouble with the size and reach of the larger opponent. However, he was able to turn up the heat late. What will happen if Taylor does not fade throughout the bout. Taylor thrives when he is able to push the pace, but will he be able to bully Burroughs around the mat? That seems unlikely. Taylor will likely be a much tougher test this time, but it is hard to pick against Burroughs ability to manage a match and pull out victories. Prediction: Burroughs VPO1 over Taylor

Tuesday night (Jan. 5) in South Atlantic Conference Carolinas action. Emmanuel drew first blood with a victory by decision at 125 pounds, before No. 15 Omar Armengol got the Cobras on the board with a 14-7 decision over Allen Stone to tie the match. 15. On Sunday, December 27, the NCWA Board of Directors met for the third time to determine the outlook for the delayed 2021 winter season. After a brief discussion with each conference chairman concerning their respective conference teams ability to participate, it was determined that no conference had even 20% participation. Four of the eight conferences had no teams that would be permitted by their universities to travel or have other teams on campus. Therefore, no allowable competition this semester. Based upon these difficult numbers, the board concluded that the NCWA will be unable to sponsor a season of competition in 2020-21. NCWA member teams who's universities are allowing competition are encouraged to compete under the guidelines provided by their respective institutions. No Athlete will be in any way penalized for competition during the 2020-21 season and no eligibility is forfeited by the athletes choosing to participate in any event this season. The board has had discussions concerning a collegiate invitational tournament that could give participating athletes a season ending event. If such an event holds interest to NCWA and or NCAA Schools please contact jim@ncwa.net to discuss details. Any events available to NCWA athletes can be posted here on the NCWA website. The Board has already begun to plan for the 2021-22 season and encourages teams to recruit athletes to their programs with the knowledge that there will be a strong 2021-22 wrestling season for NCWA Programs.
  16. Kyle Snyder will be competing Henri Deglane Grand Prix (Photo/Tony Rotundo, WrestlersAreWarriors.com) USA Wrestling is expecting to send a 33-athlete delegation to the Henri Deglane Grand Prix, which is set for Jan. 15-17 in Nice, France. The squad includes nine women's freestylers, 10 men's freestylers and 12 Greco-Roman athletes. Among the USA's entrants, there are two Olympic champions, four World champions and five World medalists. 2016 Olympic champions Helen Maroulis and Kyle Snyder will be competing in Nice. Both are also two-time World champions. Maroulis, who was the first woman in USA Wrestling history to win an Olympic title, last competed at the Pan American Olympic Qualifier in March, where she earned gold and qualified the U.S. at her weight, 57 kg, for the 2021 Olympics. Snyder, the youngest Olympic wrestling champ for the USA, won gold at the Pan American Championships in Ottawa, which were also held in March. The four World champs taking to the mat are Jacarra Winchester (53 kg WFS), Tamyra Mensah-Stock (68 kg WFS), Kyle Dake (74 kg MFS) and David Taylor (86 kg MFS). Dake is a two-time World champion at 79 kg, winning gold in 2018 and 2019. Next weekend will mark Dake's first international competition in exactly one year as he last competed at the Matteo Pellicone Tournament in January 2020. Taylor also won his World title in 2018 but was unable to compete in 2019, due to injury. His first international competition back was in March at the Pan Am Olympic Qualifier, where he won a gold medal to qualify the U.S. for the Tokyo Olympics. Winchester and Mensah-Stock both claimed World titles in 2019 in Kazakhstan at 55 kg and 68 kg, respectively. As 55 kg is not an Olympic weight, Winchester dropped down to 53 kg for the Olympic year and won the spot to represent the United States at the Pan Am Olympic Qualifier, where she qualified the U.S. with a silver medal. Having already qualified her weight, Mensah-Stock competed at the Pan American Championships, dominating her way to a gold. The Senior World medalists in the mix include men's freestylers James Green at 65 kg, who won bronze in 2015 and silver in 2017, two-time bronze medalist Nick Gwiazdowski at 125 kg and 2017 silver medalist Thomas Gilman at 57 kg as well as women's freestyle star and 2018 silver medalist Sarah Hildebrandt at 50 kg. The Greco team will feature primarily Marine athletes, including 2019 World Team members Raymond Bunker and John Stefanowicz. Also heading to France is 2019 Pan Am Games champion and two-time World Team member Pat Smith. USA Wrestling will update how to watch the event as the information becomes available. 17. The 2021 NCAA Division I wrestling season opened this past weekend with dual meets, triangulars and quadrangulars. While not all conferences were in action, there was still plenty of NCAA wrestling action Saturday and Sunday. Here are five takeaways from the opening weekend in college wrestling. It will be a messy college wrestling season With the COVID-19 pandemic still raging, look for many college wrestling events to be canceled in this already-shortened season. The NCAA Division I wrestling was supposed to kick off Friday night with UNC hosting Campbell. At 11 a.m. ET on Friday, UNC's Twitter posted this announcement: "North Carolina's season-opening wrestling match against Campbell on January 1 has been postponed because of COVID-related protocols within Carolina's team. The team will work to reschedule at a later time." On Saturday just after 2 p.m. ET, Lehigh's Twitter account posted: "Today's match vs. Hofstra has been canceled due to a positive COVID test among a member of Hofstra's Tier 1 personnel." Canceled events will lead to other canceled events as teams deal with COVID issues within their teams. Fans will look forward to dual meets or individual matches that will not happen, unfortunately, because of COVID-19. It will be a messy college wrestling season. Yonger Bastida gets ready to make his Iowa State debut (Photo/Iowa State Athletics) Yonger Bastida passes the eye test Bastida, a 2019 junior world silver medalist, made his college wrestling debut on Sunday and earned a 15-8 victory over Wartburg's Kobe Woods, who entered the match ranked No. 11 in Division III. Bastida is still learning folkstyle, but he is a tremendous talent. Look for him to continue to get more comfortable as a folkstyle wrestler as the season progresses. On Sunday, Bastida was hit for stalling in the first period after failing to return Woods to the mat, was penalized a point for a full nelson and lost a scramble. Those things are to be expected for someone who has only been in the country for 40 days. But let's focus on what did well. He scored six takedowns (and nearly a couple more), rode Woods for nearly three minutes and was able to get off the bottom fairly easily. Assuming Bastida can hold off Marcus Coleman for the starting spot in the Cyclone lineup, the Cuban could be a force to be reckoned with at 197 pounds. ISU coach Kevin Dresser was pleased with what he saw from Bastida. "As you can see, there's a lot of really good there," Dresser said after the meet. "He's just got to figure out some things. But boy can he explode." Mizzou looks strong Missouri entered the season ranked No. 10 in InterMat's dual meet rankings and No. 18 in the tournament rankings. The Tigers looked sharp on opening weekend, posting a 3-0 mark with wins over South Dakota State, North Dakota State and Oregon State, outscoring their opponents 114-12 and notching 10 wins over ranked wrestlers. Brian Smith's Tigers have a balanced team with seven ranked wrestlers and a few more on the verge of breaking into the rankings. One weight to watch for the Tigers is 157 pounds. Returning starter Jarrett Jacques and talented freshman Keegan O'Toole shared starting duties this past weekend. Both went 2-0. The 14th-ranked Jacques had two wins over ranked wrestlers, beating No. 13 Jared Franek of North Dakota State and No. 20 Hunter Willits of Oregon State. O'Toole, one of the nation's top recruits in the Class of 2020, had a pin and a technical fall. Northern Colorado head wrestling coach Troy Nickerson (Photo/UNC Athletics) Northern Colorado is on the rise Northern Colorado, under the guidance of seventh-year head coach Troy Nickerson, is a program on the rise. Five of Northern Colorado's 10 starters entered the season ranked by InterMat. One of those wrestlers is Senior Nationals freestyle champion Andrew Alirez, who is ranked No. 7 at 149 pounds. The 23rd-ranked Bears opened the season against No. 24 Wyoming on Sunday. The dual meet was a tale of two halves, with Northern Colorado winning the first five matches and Wyoming closing strong by winning the final five. Ultimately, bonus points proved to be the difference in the dual meet as Northern Colorado collected three pins on the way to a 24-19 victory. One of those pins came from Alirez, who defeated Jaron Jensen for the third time in his young college career. Keep an eye on Northern Colorado this season. The Bears' first major test will come Jan. 22 when they host Oklahoma State in a dual meet that will feature several ranked matchups. Kellyn March defeated Oregon State's Devan Turner (Photo/Zachary Lucy, NDSU Athletics) NDSU's Kellyn March is a wrestler to watch at 133 pounds North Dakota State true freshman Kellyn March made his college wrestling debut this past weekend. March has big shoes to fill with the graduation of four-time NCAA qualifier and Big 12 champion Cam Sykora. So far he looks to be filling those shoes quite nicely. The four-time South Dakota state champion posted a 2-0 record over the weekend, outscoring his two opponents 21-9. His most notable victory was a 14-5 major decision over Oregon State's seventh-ranked Devan Turner. Against Turner, March fell behind early after getting taken down but dominated the rest of the way. He led 4-2 in the second period before throwing Turner to his back late in the period to extend his lead to 10-2 after two periods. March looked strong in all positions over the weekend. While it was not Turner's weekend (he went 0-3, with two of his losses coming by major decision), March is certainly a wrestler to keep an eye on as the season progresses.
  18. SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The Utah Valley University wrestling team opened its 2020-21 season with a bang by crowning six champions at the season-opening Cal Poly Round Robin Tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Mott Athletics Center in San Luis Obispo. Senior 174-pounder Demetrius Romero and redshirt freshmen Ty Smith (133 pounds) and Kekana Fouret (165) all went 3-0 en route to winning their respective weight classes, while freshman 157-pounder Danny Snediker and sophomore Jacob Armstrong (197) each went 2-0, and freshmen Kase Mauger and Dawson Collins each compiled 1-0 records to share the 125-pound title. "We are grateful for the opportunity to compete and it felt great to get back out on the mat today," head UVU coach Greg Williams said. "With this format, we had the opportunity to get more matches -- not only for our starters but also our backups. This is necessary this season so that we can see where they are at, and in some weights our backups competed just as well as our starters. So overall, I am happy the ground that has been gained with our depth and how everyone competed as a whole." After missing all but the first tournament of the 2019-20 season with a knee injury, the 2019 Big 12 champion and sixth-ranked 174-pound senior Romero picked up right where he left off in 2018-19 by going a perfect 3-0 on the day to win his weight class. After opening with a third-period fall over Christian Rodriguez of Fresno State (5:50) in his opening match, the two-time UVU NCAA qualifier then found himself in a battle with a fellow ranked foe in No. 20 Bernie Truax of Cal Poly. Trailing 3-2 in the third, Romero muscled a double-leg takedown with one minute to go to take a late 4-3 lead. With just under a minute remaining in regulation, Truax managed to gain an escape point to tie the bout at 4-4 and send the contest to overtime. In the first sudden victory period, the redshirt senior Romero used his experience to get in on a shot and score the winning takedown to take the contest by a score of 6-4. Then in his final match of the day, Romero concluded his unblemished outing with a dominant 16-0 technical fall victory over Jared Priest of Cal Poly. The redshirt freshman Smith too went a perfect 3-0 on the day en route to winning the 133-pound title. In his first action as a Wolverine, Smith picked up wins over Fresno State's Haiden Drury (5-2), Cal Poly's Adam Jacob (4-2) and Cal Poly's Benny Martinez (9-5) on his way to winning the 133-pound title. At 165, both redshirt freshman Fouret and senior Koy Wilkinson competed well for the Wolverines by compiling a 5-1 combined record. Fouret won the 165-pound bracket by going 3-0 while Wilkinson finished right behind him with a 2-1 showing. Fouret picked up wins over Cal Poly's Nathan Tausch (5-0), Cal Poly's Kendall La Rosa (14-0) and Fresno State's Beau Colombini (medical forfeit), while Wilkinson defeated Fresno's Colombini (10-2) and CP's La Rosa (3-2). The freshman Snediker also won the 157-pound title after going a perfect 2-0 on Sunday. In his first official collegiate action, Snediker picked up a 7-3 decision over Cal Poly's Max Anderson followed by a quick first-period fall over Cal Poly's Daniel Vizcarra (1:24) to go undefeated on the day. Up a weight class this season at 197 pounds, Armstrong too went 2-0 on the day for UVU en route to winning his weight class. The UVU redshirt sophomore recorded wins over Cal Poly's Trevor Tinker (8-3) and his teammate Josh Harkey (5-2) to win another title for the Wolverines. At 125 pounds, UVU freshmen Mauger and Collins split title honors by each going 1-0 with respective 6-2 and 12-3 victories over Fresno State's Anthony Molton. With a total of 18 Wolverines in action on the day, junior 184-pounder Ashton Seely (2-1), sophomore 133-pounder Kainalu Estrella (2-1), freshman 149-pounder Jaxon Garoutte (2-2), and the senior 165-pounder Wilkinson (2-1) all picked up two wins on the day, while freshman 141-pounder Stockton O'Brien (1-2), 31st-ranked sophomore 149-pounder Cameron Hunsaker (1-3), junior 157-pounder Jed Loveless (1-1), sophomore 174-pounder Chris Fasano (1-2), freshman 184-pounder Hunter Morse (1-2) and sophomore heavyweight Chase Trussell (1-1) all recorded one win apiece. Two-time UVU NCAA qualifier and ninth-ranked 125-pounder Taylor LaMont and junior 141-pounder Isaiah Delgado were both sidelined on the day due to contract tracing from COVID-19. Both are expected to be back and in time for Friday's home opener. Originally scheduled for head-to-head dual meets, Sunday's action was switched to a non-team scored round robin tournament to try to get each wrestler more matches, as it featured a pair of wrestlers in each weight class (where available) from UVU, fellow Big 12 Conference foe Fresno State, and the host Cal Poly Mustangs. The Wolverines will now return to Orem to kick-off a two-match homestand beginning on Friday, Jan. 8. UVU will first welcome California Baptist to town for a traditional dual meet at noon MT at Lockhart Arena on Jan. 8, before hosting the UVU Round Robin Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 23. The UVU Round Robin Tournament will feature No. 11 Arizona State, Wyoming and UVU, and will be contested on two mats that day in the UCCU Center.
  19. LARAMIE, Wyo. -- Hibernation is over. Northern Colorado wrestling made that statement loud and clear in its 24-19 season-opening dual win over Wyoming. The Bears jumped out to a 24-0 by the break with three falls in the first five matches. Jace Koelzer (125), Andrew Alirez (149) and Nick Knutson (157) each pinned their opponent to start their 2021 campaign. Koelzer came out full of energy to kick off the season. He had four takedowns and a four-point near fall putting him on the verge of a tech fall victory when he pinned Wyoming's Brendon Garcia at the 5:59 mark. Alirez took on another ranked opponent in No. 31 Jaron Jensen. He earned his first fall of the season at the 4:40 mark after racking up three takedowns in the first and second periods. North Dakota State graduate transfer Nick Knutson made his impact on the UNC lineup with his pin of Logan Jensen just before the buzzer of the first period. The pin at 2:59 was the fastest of the day for UNC as he made it 24-0. Mosha Schwartz (133) and Chris Sandoval (141) each chipped into the Bears' early lead with a pair of decisions. Schwartz defeated Job Greenwood 6-5 and Sandoval beat Chase Zollman 3-1. Schwartz's escape and takedown in the second period was the difference in his match, while Sandoval needed a takedown with 1:08 left in the third period to earn the tight 3-1 win. Wyoming made a charge at UNC in the second half of the dual, but the quick burst out of the gate was enough for the Bears to secure the win. 20. The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team needed a spark on Sunday evening in the season-opening dual match against the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. And senior leader and team captain Jake Wentzel provided that boost for the Panthers (1-0, 0-0 ACC). With his team trailing 14-3 after dropping four of the first five bouts to the Midshipmen (0-1, 0-0 EIWA), Wentzel won his opening match of the season against No. 7 Tanner Skidgel of Navy by a 5-2 decision, sparking a furious Pitt rally that saw the visitors take the last five contests of the dual to triumph 22-14. "Jake found a way tonight, even when it didn't look like it was going to go his way," Pitt head coach Keith Gavin said of Wentzel. "The upper weights did a really nice job. We know we can count on the likes of Wentzel, Harvey and Bonaccorsi, but it was great to see McGill and Slinger win as well." The Panthers, who were ranked No. 14 by the NWCA Coaches Poll ahead of the 2021 season, won against Navy for the first time since 1995. The teams hadn't met in wrestling since 1997. Also crucial in Pitt's fourth consecutive season-opening victory under Gavin were technical falls earned at 197 pounds and heavyweight by Nino Bonaccorsi and Jake Slinger, respectively. Both put on impressive scoring performances to tally bonus points for the Panthers, with Bonaccorsi's last-second technical fall giving Pitt its first lead of the dual at 17-14. Also winning for the Panthers, two-time defending ACC champion at 133 pounds Micky Phillippi began his 2021 campaign with a steady 8-3 decision, while redshirt freshman Jared McGill and senior captain Gregg Harvey also edged out decisions that were vital to continuing Pitt's momentum late in the dual. "We knew Navy would fight hard," Coach Gavin added. "They have a strong team led by a new coach in Cary Kolat. We have a lot of respect for those guys. We're also very thankful to get the dual in as well as extra matches. Every wrestler that traveled competed twice, so we're appreciative of Navy's efforts in helping to make that happen with us." The Panthers and Midshipmen also utilized an additional mat during and after the dual to give numerous student-athletes on both teams the opportunity to compete. Pitt's starters faced Navy's reserves and vice versa following the dual as well. Full results from Sunday's action are available below. Results: 125 | Logan Treaster (Navy) dec. 23. MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Central Michigan won all 10 matches and scored bonus points in six of them on Sunday in topping Olivet, 44-0, in a nonconference dual wrestling meet at McGuirk Arena. It was the season opener for the Chippewas, who are ranked 21st nationally by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Hildebrandt is ranked seventh nationally, Stencel is fourth, and Marten is 19th. Dresden Simon (141), CMU's other ranked wrestler, did not wrestle against the Comets. It was Cramer's first match as a Chippewa after transferring from Old Dominion. The Chippewas got decision victories from Drew Marten (133), Hunter Watts (141), Corbyn Munson (149), Jake Lowell (174) and Sage Castillo (184). It was the first career dual-meet victories for Watts, a redshirt freshman, and for Castillo, a senior. "I think the important thing for our guys is getting into a routine, making weight for the first time, having to wrestle a different, not someone that you practice with on the mat," Borrelli said. "Also seeing how your body feels after making weight, making sure you make adjustments from week to week if you don't feel quite like you should. Those things are real important." Munson's 10-8 win at 149 was the most-competitive match of the dual. Munson, a redshirt sophomore, built an early 7-0 lead and appeared well in control before Olivet's Hunter Murphy rallied. Munson suffered an injury in the match and fell behind, 8-7, before staging a late comeback to secure the win. "I think any time you have to overcome adversity it's good for you," Borrelli said. "I think you gain confidence from that because you're in a tough situation and you figure out how to be successful. He was up 7-0 and then put himself in a bad situation and had to take injury time. He figured out how to win. Those are good things for us. Sometimes you're looking for those types of matches and to see how people respond and that's good for him." The Chippewas go to Missouri on Friday, Jan. 8, for a tri-meet with Mid-American Conference rival Missouri and non-league foe Wyoming. The Tigers, the perennial MAC champions, are ranked 10th, while the Cowboys are 24th. "We're really excited for that dual," Pelham said. "We try to approach every single week the exact same way … but it's one we've had on the calendar for a long time and we feel pretty confident in our abilities and in our lineup that we're going to go out there and make some noise and take care of business. "We've got to have a good week of training, everyone's got to take care of their weight, take care of their bodies and get ready to wrestle." Said Borrelli: "We know they're the team to beat in our league, so we know we're going to need a really good performance and we think we're capable of it. That's why you do this; you do this to compete against the best people and that's what we want."
