Yianni and the Longest Streaks
Brooklyn Dodger replied to Brooklyn Dodger's topic in College Wrestling
Of course I know how Wiki works, but that does not mean it cannot be accurate (or inaccurate). But the HoF should certainly be accurate. Even if the the honoree submits his own bio-- weird, if true-- someone should check it before they publish. -

Why wouldn't the L count today? What happened? -
I list AAs only if they were an AA in the year they faced the champ. Dean Heil (not Josh) was a 2X champ, but did not AA in the year he lost to Yianni. Also, Heil had 7 losses that year and dropped to a 6 seed. IIRC they changed the rules to limit a wrestlers ability to wrestle from his back. That rule change really hurt Heil (and may have been eancted with Heil in mind). After he lost to Yianni he was pinned in the first period by Red. This is a good example of why it makes sense only to count AAs who earned that status in the year in question.

Here is a chart showing Dake, Yianni and Spencer Lee in their tournament bouts. No surprise that Lee has the most bonus wins, but Dake and Yianni faced more AAs (that is AAs from they year the champs beat them) along the way. Dake also had one pin than Lee, not even counting his senior year, which Lee has not had yet and when Dake had no pins. Both Dake and Yianni had a fair number of close wins.

It would make more sense to count the number of AAs (as in people) he faced than AAs (as in total placements). For instance, he faced Dean Heil when Heil was a 2X champ and maybe a 4X AA (if you count his whole career as opposed to his number of AAs when Yianni beat him). If you are trying to account for his lack of bonus pojnts it matters more how many guys he wrestled who never AAed.

Yianni and the Longest Streaks

Are you saying that Wiki's statement that Kemp "had a 96-match winning streak" is not true? Are they ignoring the loss? FWIW, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame says Kemp had "victories in 96 consecutive matches and an unbeaten string of 109 in a row." -

It's not implying that. I know the NCAA prints brackets with records before the tournament and after. I assumed that they updated the brackets as the tournament goes on, but did not change how the names and records were stated as of Round 1. -

I am not "generally misinformed." I was misinformed about whether the brackets posted the pre-tournament record or the post-tournament record. I guess I assumed the records were pre-tournament as the brackets are printed before the tourney starts. -

I was asking whether 117-1 counted Gable's redshirt wins, not Smiths, as there is a discrepancy in his reported records. -

An article on the OK State site indeed says "Amongst the top of several Cowboy record lists, one of the most impressive might be his run of 98 consecutive matches without a loss, tying former wrestling great and former Iowa Head Coach Dan Gable for third on the all-time chart." But didn't Gable have more than 98? Wikipedia says, "Gable's college career record was 117–1, with his only loss being in the final match of his final season to Larry Owings." That would mean his win streak was 117. But the Wrestling Hall of Fame says his record was 94-1, which would put his win streak at 94, less than Pat Smith's. https://nwhof.org/hall_of_fame/bio_by_name/dan-gable. This is odd. Is Wiki counting redshirt wins? -

According to the NCAA brackets, Yianni was: In 2018: 29-1 going into the tournament. Cornell says he ended the year on a 19-0 streak. 2019: 29-0 going into the tournament; won 5 in the tournament 2020 - no tournament 2021: Yianni did not compete due to Oly redshirt 2022: 28-0 going into the tournament; won 5 in the tournament IN SUM: 19+29+5+28+5=86 match streak. Again my number was off-- by one. I am under the impression that the record in the brackets is going in, not coming out. If that's wrong, his streak is indeed at 76. -

He was 26-0 going into the tournament according the to the NCAA bracket. Then he won five IN the tournament. https://i.turner.ncaa.com/sites/default/files/images/2019/03/22/brackets.pdf I am getting all my season records from the NCAA brackets. -

I will do the math for you: Yianni was 26-0 going into the NCAAs his soph year. He was 29-0 his junior year. Each year he won 5 matches to win the tournament. That's 65. He ended his frosh year on a 19-win steak. Total is 84 (not 85, sorry, but much more than 75). -

Per Wikiepedia: Kemp had a 96-match winning streak (no losses or ties) and a 110-match unbeaten streak.| National Wrestling Hall of Fame On Haselrig, his college website says his record was an overall career record of 143-2-1. It does not say when he took his losses. Of course, not to be petty, but most of his wins were in D2. -

Nope, it's 85. You are forgetting the matches he won AT the NCAA tournament the last two years. -
Please do NOT do football or other sports. They might overshadow wrestling even here. There is no shortage of football news or chatter.
