CA tougher than PA or NJ this year? Without a doubt . . .Here's some notable results:

120 LBS - is there a tougher weight class nationally?

  • #1 Seed – Rocklin Zinkin SR, 2x CA State Champ, 1x Runner Up, Ranked #2 Nationally
  • #2 Seed - Henry Aslikyan SR, 2x CA State Champ, Cadet World Champ, Ranked #18 Nationally
  • #3 Seed – Sammy Sanchez SO, 1x CA State Champ, 2x Cadet World Champ, Ranked #4 Nationally
  • ZINKIN BESTS SANCHEZ 5-2 IN THE FINALS, ASLIKYAN RECOVERS FROM A SEMI LOSS 2-1 TO SANCHEZ TO TAKE 3RD

175 LBS - top 2 guys nationally

  • #1 Seed – Mario Carini JR, 1x CA State Champ, Ranked #1 Nationally
  • #2 Seed – Mason Ontiveros SR, Ranked #2 Nationally
  • #3 Seed – Isai Fernandez SO, Ranked #13 Nationally
  • #4 Seed – Travis Grace SR, 1x CA State Champ, Ranked #17 Nationally
  • CARINI DOMINATES FERNANDEZ IN THE FINALS 8-1, ONTIVEROS OFF A 4-2 LOSS TO FERNANDEZ IN THE SEMIS BOUNCES BACK TO TAKE 3RD OVER GRACE

106 LBS - Fabulous Freshman

  • #1 Seed – Michael Bernaby FR, Ranked #2 Nationally
  • #2 Seed – Thales Silva FR, Ranked #3 Nationally
  • #3 Seed – Luke Loren FR, Ranked #5 Nationally
  • #6 Seed - Tyler Sweet SO, Ranked #4 Nationally
  • BERNABY WINS OVER SILVA IN THE FINALS 12-1 (PREVIOUS MATCHES BACK AND FORTH). LOREN TAKES 5TH OVER SWEET. KOOPER DEPUTY WOULD BE SMART TO STAY OUT EAST.

Other Notable Stuff:

  • HWT: Coby Merrill, Ranked #2 Nationally, off to Iowa St, pins his finals opponent in 0:37 seconds and wasn't challenged. He finishes his career 2x CA State Champ, 2x runner up
  • 132: Ashton Besmer, ranked #3 Nationally, won his 1st CA State title, beating #5 Nationally Slater Hicks 9-6
  • 138: Michigan man Moses Mendoza, #1 Nationally, had a scary moment in the Semi's when he got cradled and almost pinned. Bounced back with a pin in that match and a tech in the finals against CJ Huerta, who's headed to Rutgers. Mendoza wins his 2nd CA state title.
  • 144: Jr. Jesse Grajeda (Ohio St commit), after finishing 2nd as a FR & SO, finally got his 1st title and looked awesome doing it. Dominant throughout. Dude is lights out on his feet.
  • 150: Grajeda's teammate, #3 Nationally Michael Romero, captured his first state title as well
  • 157: Chris Creason, #9 Nationally and headed to Oregon St., unfortunately was hurt in his Qtr final win and didn't wrestle on. Unfortunate, but I'm very high on him and I think he'll have a great college career
  • 165: Stanford commit, Slava Shahbazyan, #17 Nationally (but he's better than that), wasn't tested and won his first state title and wasn't tested. He's getting better. College folks better watch out!

Awesome post! serious question, is there a chance Zinkin is better than Troy next year?

How good can Grajeda be? I watched his finals match and he looked great but I never heard of his opponent.

Spratley had a higher more explosive motor last year IMO. Zinkin is a full go every time all the time kind of guy. I think Spratley may get him due to experiential savvy but believe Zinkin has th better career.

What happened to Super 32 and Doc B champ Jorge Rios? Did he get injured and miss the post season?

Wondering the same thing.

Jorge Rios missed weight at the regionals (Southern Section Valleys, which is the qualifier to Southern Section Masters, which is the qualifier to State) so wasn't eligible to compete.

Total rumor - I don't know if it is true - but I was also told this weekend that he'll be 19 as a Junior in high school next year so won't be able to compete his senior year of high school.  If so that leaves him with one more year of eligibility for CA high school to win a state championship.  If true, I assume he will re-classify.
