After watching the video interview with Ghassempour, I have lost a bit of confidence in his chances for gold.

He mentioned how he did not want to move back down to 86 yet, and wanted to do it the year before the Olympics.

He also mentioned how he has always has had issues dropping weight, ever since his childhood.

So his making weight, and the impact of losing so much weight may be a bigger factor than i suspected.

From what I understand is that they made him go to 86kg 2 years too early. I still think he makes the weight relatively easily its just a matter of how well he matches up against Kadik, Kadiev and Valencia which is the issue. His match against Kadiev last year was too close imo and Kadiev should only be getting better. I'm really hoping he beats them all to win gold as that would be an incredibly impressive run and probably the most impressive run for an Iranian ever to win a world/olympic gold tbh.

This my opinion only

Yazdani going to 97 100%

Firouzpour going to 86, doubtful, if anything, I expect him to compete at 97 for the olympics

Ghassempour prefers to be at 92 for now, but he was pressured by the coaches and the federation to be a team player and wrestle at 86

Can Yazdani fill out at 97 properly??? Imo he should go to 92 and win a couple more world titles tbh. His legacy wouldn't be ruined by dominating at a non-olympic weight class JB did it and he is one of the GOATS. I just don't think he will be big enough for that weight class especially since Ghasempour struggled to make it as well and he was coming up from 92.

He will probably make a stop at 92 next year before he goes up to 97.  Firouzpour will be a good test for him at 92

I do not think that Yaz will be big at 97 but I think he will kill people with his pace at the weight.

I agree that if he fully recovers from his surgeries, he will be a force to reckoned with.

With regard’s Ghassempour weight- Babak had a live chat on instagram a couple of days ago and the word is that Ghassempour is comfortably close to 86 and no real issues. I suspect some of the comments Ghassempour himself made could be misdirection.

He has the roundest muscle I have seen of any natural wrestler ever. That generally leads to large glycogen stores and a lot of fluid in the muscle. Generally, that allows for someone to be able to pull a lot of water rather fast Paulo costa is a good example in MMA.

Or Babak...

The reason I’m a bit doubtful about the interview that he said he does not like cutting weight and he did it because he was encouraged by the coaches is that it’s published on the official Iranian federation official instagram account. Seems to go against the grain for him to candidly say it there and then for the federation to sanction it and post it with their official blessing.

He did not say it was encouraged by coaches

he said he would have preferred to wrestle at 92 and I concluded that he was encouraged by the coaches and the federation

I was also paraphrasing too- I got the same impression as you did that he was saying he was urged to go to 86. Regardless it’s odd to say it in the federation organised interview which was subsequently posted by them too. I would have thought he would have been way too measured to come up with that at this 11 hour - so me thinking this was part of an arranged strategic move. But may be he was just being honest and I’m too cynical
