  1. BOISE, Idaho - After conceding seven-straight points in the opening two bouts, the Boise State wrestling team (6-5, 2-1 Pac-12) won the remaining eight bouts to defeat Pac-12 foe Arizona State, 33-7 at Taco Bell Arena, Sunday. Brian Owen (133) and Jason Chamberlain (149) dominated their opponents as each earned five team points from technical falls in the third period. The result was Owen's first technical fall of the season while Chamberlain had earned one earlier in the season. Chamberlain, who entered the match ranked second in his weight class, has now outscored opponents 213-74 this season. Jake Swartz (184) and Scott Bacon (174) each earned bonus points during the match as well. Swartz tallied his team-best eight major decision of the year, defeating Kevin Radford 11-2 and improving his overall record to 23-3 this season. The major decision was Bacon's third as the Republic, Wash., native has accumulated an 11-4 record in his last 15 bouts. Redshirt senior Josh Strait earned a dramatic win in his first action of the season. Strait was up 1-0 heading into the third period against Matt Kraus but gave up a reversal with just over a minute remaining, giving Kraus a 2-1 edge. With about 50 seconds in the bout Strait was able to escape and level the score line at 2-2. Both wrestlers looked for their shots and Strait would be the first and last to find a successful one, getting a takedown at the seven-second mark to win 4-2. George Ivanov and Holden Packard provided some insurance for the Broncos at 157 and 165 pounds respectively. Each traded takedowns for escapes all match as Ivanov finished with a 12-5 advantage and Packard an 8-4 edge. Junior Cody Dixon battled with No. 5 Jake Meredith into the third period where he trailed 5-2. Meredith, however, sustained an injury during the bout and was forced to forfeit after his injury time expired giving the Broncos six more points to cap things off. Boise State will next host CSU Bakersfield, Feb. 1, for the first of two Beaut and the Beast meets. Results: 285: No. 17 Levi Cooper (ASU) dec. No. 10 J.T. 2. EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team took down its second top 25 team this week by beating No. 21 Northwestern, 21-13, and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, 48-0. The Panthers faced SIUE at noon and followed up with the Northwestern dual. UNI won 14 matches before losing its first bout Sunday. "That's always big. It got the ball rolling to get a huge win against Northwestern," said head coach Doug Schwab. "It was a good win for us. We had the momentum." UNI has outscored opponents 260-86 in duals. The Panthers were just coming off Friday's 18-15 win against the Sooners of No. 13 Oklahoma. "We saw a different attitude. I was happy the way they responded," Schwab said. "Sometimes it can be really tough to come back. We talked about consistency if they want to be All-Americans. Schwab said he didn't see any fatigue in his wrestlers Sunday. "We are glad to see how they are developing, especially confidence-wise. Every match counts. Friday was big, but today was just as huge." Senior Ryan Jauch got the Panthers' momentum started right away by getting his fastest pin of the year. He stuck Tyler Gilleland of SIUE in 20 seconds. Jarrett Jensen also got his fastest pin of the year (24 seconds) when he beat Logan Taylor of SIUE. Five Panthers recorded pins against SIUE: 125 - Ryan Jauch, 0:20 133 - Levi Wolfensperger, 5:25 165 - Jarrett Jensen, 0:24 174 - Cody Caldwell, 5:19 184 - Ryan Loder, 5:37 Also scoring bonus points for the Panthers against SIUE: 141 - Joey Lazor, technical fall, 17-0 (6:49) 157 - David Bonin, major decision, 10-0 UNI continued to get bonus points in the Northwestern dual. At 141 pounds, Levi Wolfensperger got a major decision (12-1) over Garrison White, and Ryan Loder beat Marcus Shrewsbury 19-3 to earn a technical fall. This was the second time Wolfensperger beat White. The two faced each other at the Midlands Championships as well. "I like how Loder attacked," said Schwab. "Overall, it was a good team performance." Blaize Cabell just recently entered the Panther lineup for duals. After getting a win Friday, he split his matches today, losing to No. 16 Alex Polizzi. "Blaize was able to put one guy away and had a great match early in the day. He lost to a ranked guy, and that's what we talk about. It just shows we need to be consistent," said Schwab. "We want to knock off some of those ranked guys, but he had a good weekend." The Panthers continue to use two wrestlers in their heavyweight position, using returning NCAA national qualifier and senior Blayne Beale and redshirt freshman Cody Krumwiede. "We are still up in the air and looking for something to separate themselves from each other," said Schwab." The Panthers will close out their home dual season at 2 p.m. Sunday in the West Gym against No. 7 Missouri. "Sunday will be tough. We need to come out fighting and ready to win," said Schwab. "I like where we are headed though, and we have a lot to build on. We're excited to see the competition." 3. SPEARFISH, S.D. -- A wire-to-wire lead powered the University of Wyoming wrestling team to a 21-13 dual victory over South Dakota State on Sunday in Spearfish, S.D. The Pokes earned six match victories in the Donald E. Young Center on the campus of Black Hills State University to defeat the Jackrabbits for their second conference win of the season. UW now is 7-3 overall and 2-0 in Western Wrestling Conference action. The Jacks wouldn’t go away quietly, as they made the margin 10-9 UW after six matches. But Wyoming used wins from senior L.J. Helbig (174 pounds), sophomore Shane Woods (184) and senior Alfonso Hernandez to seal the victory. “We had an opportunity to make it pretty lopsided, but overall, our focus wasn’t great,” said Wyoming head coach Mark Branch, who won his 24th conference dual in five seasons. “I do think we had an opportunity to separate ourselves and missed out on a couple bonus-point opportunities. I’m not happy, but we had a hard week of practice and they looked a little bit fatigued. It was an improvement over last weekend (a loss to Oregon State) but I still wasn’t pleased with how sloppy we were. “They have a team that likes to slow it down, and we wrestled right into their strategy. We’ve got a lot of work to do, and we’ve got a very tough opponent next weekend (versus North Dakota State). Right now, we’re not where we need to be.” UW began the dual with a 4-0 lead thanks to a 15-4 major decision from sophomore Tyler Cox at 125 pounds. SDSU took the 133-pound match, but UW responded with a win from junior Kyle Komata at 141 pounds. After the Jacks won at 149, sophomore Andy McCulley earned a 7-3 decision at 157 pounds. SDSU drew to within one point after the 165-pound bout at 10-9, but Wyoming responded with three-straight wins to secure the victory. The Cowboys return home to host North Dakota State on Senior Day in the UniWyo Sports Complex at 2 p.m. Sunday. UW will honor its five seniors prior to the first match. 4. NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma wrestling team sent five seniors out in style as Oklahoma topped new Big 12 opponent West Virginia, 25-14, in its final home match of the 2012-13 season in front of 679 fans at McCasland Field House on Sunday afternoon. The Sooners bid adieu to Scott Chene, Dillon Dennis, Bubby Graham, Keldrick Hall and Nolan McBryde as OU claimed six of the ten matches against WVU. With the win, OU improved to 6-4 on the year and 2-1 in Big 12 competition, while WVU fell to 1-5 on the year and 0-2 in conference action after it suffered a loss to No. 2 OSU on Friday night. "Our goal tonight was to keep West Virginia on the attack," explained head coach Mark Cody. "We told the guys not to be satisfied with a major decision, don't be satisfied with winning your match by three or four points," Cody continued. "You have the option of a technical fall or pin, and that's what we were looking for tonight - to just keep on scoring as the match went on." The Sooners did just that with two technical falls, three major decisions and just one decision on the afternoon. Two of the five seniors went out with wins after Graham secured a 14-3 major decision against the Mountaineers' Dominic Prezzia in the 165-pound matchup, and heavyweight Keldric Hall secured the victory in the last match of the afternoon, after a 2-1 bout with WVU's Phil Mandzik. "It's been an amazing experience," stated Graham. "I have only been in Oklahoma for two years, but it feels like it could have been my whole career; I have guys on the team that I consider my brothers now." "I'm definitely going to miss wrestling at Oklahoma, here in McCasland, all the fans and people are great," explained Graham. "Not only will I miss wrestling here, but it's been an amazing experience to be coached by Coach Cody, he's a big part of my wrestling career and I'm thankful for that." McBryde took to the mat in a valiant effort, but dropped a 14-4 major decision against Lance Bryson in the middle of a late West Virginia push that included Mountaineer wins in the 174-, 184- and 197-pound bouts. Dennis and Chene, who were also honored, did not participate in the dual. Despite the seniors' efforts, if it wasn't for the performances of four underclassmen, the day may not have been as sweet. Cody Brewer, the nation's No. 10 133-pounder, was the first Sooner on the board with an impressive 24-10 major decision over WVU's Colin Johnston in the second match of the day. Brewer, who leads the team in takedowns, major decisions and reversals, totaled a team-leading nine takedowns on the afternoon in his rout over Johnston. The nation's top-ranked 141-pounder Kendric Maple followed Brewer's lead with a 10-2 major decision over WVU's No. 14 Nathan Pennesi. Pennesi was Maple's fifth-straight ranked opponent, and eighth of the year for the standout redshirt junior, who remains undefeated throughout his 2012-13 campaign with a 19-0 overall and 9-0 record in dual competition. Fellow redshirt junior, No. 14 Nick Lester, had a tremendous performance against the Mountaineers when he blanked Timothy Wheeling in the 149-pound bout with a 17-0 tech fall in 5:57. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Lester, who is on a 3-0 run in dual competition with wins against Iowa State, Northern Iowa and now, West Virginia. Justin DeAngelis filled in at 157-pounds in a five-match win streak for the Sooners. After Lester's thrilling performance, DeAngelis followed with a tech fall victory of his own against West Virginia's Jason Luster. The redshirt sophomore from Tulsa, Okla., scored 14 points in the second period to earn the 18-2 victory, and secure the tech fall, the third of his career and first this season, in 4:51. With the win, DeAngelis remains undefeated in dual competition throughout his two-year Oklahoma career. Although the Sooners celebrated their senior day on Sunday, the season is far from over. Three duals remain on the schedule with contests against Lehigh, Virginia Tech and Missouri, along with a trip to the National Duels in Corvallis Oregon in the middle of February. Postseason action begins in March with the Big 12 Tournament in Stillwater, Okla. (March 8-9), followed by NCAA's in Des Moines, Iowa, March 21-23. Results: 125: Shane Young (WVU) dec. 6. CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Senior co-captain Walter Peppelman became just the seventh wrestler in Crimson history to reach 100 career wins Sunday with a dramatic 4-2 sudden victory decision over No. 17 Scott Winston of Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights, however, won seven of 10 weight classes to defeat Harvard in the team scores, 26-9. Peppelman, the eighth-ranked wrestler at 157 lbs., found himself trailing early as Winston got in on a leg for an early takedown. An escape point for Peppelman before the first period expired moved the score to 2-1 and the senior easily escaped from his down starting position in the second to even the bout. Neither grappler was able to generate offense for the remainder of regulation, sending the two into the extra session. It appeared as though the score would remain tied through the first sudden victory period until a shot by Peppelman with under 0:10 remaining found its mark. Peppelman was then able to gain control of Winston near the edge of the mat just before the buzzer sounded, giving him the 4-2 decision. Rutgers (12-2, 5-0 EIWA) built a solid lead in the team scores at the next three weights, earning a decision at 165 lbs. and major decisions at 174 and 184. James Fox ended Harvard's (2-4, 0-3 EIWA) drought at 197, picking up a 12-8 decision after dominating the match early with several takedowns. Heavyweight Nicholas Gajdzik looked to make it two in a row as his third-period escape sent him into overtime with Billy Smith tied at 1-1, but Smith was able to ride Gajdzik out in the tiebreakers to register the 2-1 victory. The 125 lbs. bout came down to the wire as well as Joseph Langel just edged Jeffrey Ott, 7-5. After trailing 4-1 early, Ott worked his way back into the match with a late reversal and was forced to cut Langel with under 0:20 to go. Ott got in on a low single off the restart but did not have enough time to finish before the buzzer. At 133 lbs., Ryan Osleeb and Vincent Dellefave found themselves tied heading into the final minute of action and Rutgers came away with a familiar result, as Dellefave connected on a high single to emerge with a 4-2 win. Todd Preston closed the day out with a hard fought 3-1 decision at 149 lbs. After a scoreless first period, Preston rode Ken Theobold for 1:09 before Theobold took a 1-0 lead with an escape. Preston chose to begin the third period neutral and was able to counter a Theobold shot at the edge of the mat, giving him the 3-1 margin with riding time. Ramos extended Iowa's team lead to 7-0 with five takedowns, a pair of points for stalling, one reversal and a point for riding time en route to a 15-4 win over Brandon Fifield. Ballweg then gave Iowa an 11-0 advantage and earned his team-best ninth major decision with a 14-4 win over Nicholas Trimble. Michigan State (4-7, 0-4) cut Iowa's lead to 11-3 when Michael Kelly (149) dropped a 10-4 decision to Dan Osterman, but top-ranked Derek St. John (157) put Iowa back on the board with a 12-6 win over Ryan Watts. Moore stretched Iowa's lead to 20-3 with a fall over Nick Proctor. He earned his third pin of the season after erasing a 2-0 deficit and building a 14-3 edge before flatting Proctor in 6:39. Mike Evans earned his second straight major decision with a 12-2 win over Jordan Wohlfert at 174, and Nathan Burak improved to 3-1 in the Big Ten with a 7-4 win over Luke Jones at 197. Michigan State's John Rizqallah picked up the Spartans' second win with a 6-3 decision over Ethen Lofthouse (184). 9. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 6 Ohio State wrestling team earned its third Big Ten win of the season Sunday afternoon when it beat No. 19 Wisconsin, 29-10, in St. John Arena. The Buckeyes improve to 9-2 overall, while the Badgers drop to 6-4 overall and 3-2 in the conference. "Getting a win in Big Ten wrestling is not an easy thing," Tom Ryan, head coach, said. "I'm proud of my guys. Coming off our victory over Indiana, it is nice to get back home and get another victory." Backed by a pair of pins from Hunter Stieber and Nikko Triggas at 141 and 125 pounds, respectively, and a technical fall by Kenny Courts in the 184-pound bout, the Scarlet and Gray defeated their fifth ranked opponent of the season. Triggas' match vs. Matt Cavallaris concluded the afternoon and the Buckeye's 45-second fall marks his ninth of the season and 46th of his career. Triggas' career count ranks him third all time and now he is one fall shy of a tie for second place. Don Moxley, a Buckeye letterwinner from 1983-85, is the all-time Ohio State career falls leader with 50. Despite trailing the Badgers early, 4-0, after Kyle Visconti dropped the opening bout at 133 pounds, 25-11, Ohio State soon took a 6-4 lead when Stieber pinned Thomas Kelliher in 1:22 for his 23rd win of the season. The Buckeye advantage was short-lived however after Cam Tessari dropped an 8-7 decision to Cole Schmitt in the 149-pound matchup. Tessari rallied from a 4-1 deficit at the end of the first period when he scored in succession an escape, takedown and 3-point nearfall to take a 7-4 lead. However, towards the end of the period Schmitt recorded a reversal to cut Tessari's lead to one (7-6). Schmitt was able to add a takedown in the third period for the final score. With Wisconsin holding on to a slim 7-6 lead, Ohio State reeled off five consecutive victories en route to a 23-7 lead. Josh Demas, who has faced the Nos. 1, 2 and 12th-ranked wrestlers in the nation at 157 pounds, earned his first Big Ten win of the season on a 5-3 decision vs. Charles York. Demas used an escape in the third period to increase his lead throughout the close match. Teammate Mark Martin also won his first league match of the season when decisioned Frank Cousins, 8-3 at 165 pounds. Up, 2-1, at the conclusion of the first period, Martin scored a pair of takedowns and an escape for a 7-3 advantage. A riding time of 1:57 helped the Buckeye to the 8-3 final. Nick Heflin gave up just an escape to Scott Liegel in his 6-1 victory at 174 pounds, while Courts took an 11-0 lead into the second period vs. Ben Cox before rolling to a 16-0 win in the 184-pound matchup. Facing No. 20 Jackson Hein at 197 pounds, Andrew Campolattano, the Russ Hellickson Wrestler of the Match, held on for the 3-2 win. Campolattano owned a slim 3-1 lead entering the third period and despite an escape by Hein in the final period, the Buckeye sophomore collected his 15th win of the season. Heavyweight Peter Capone suffered a 5-2 loss to Connor Medbery. The two wrestlers were knotted up at 2-2 at the beginning of the third period, but a 2-point nearfall by Medbery, plus riding time of 1:20 secured the Badgers their third win of the afternoon. The Buckeyes are back in action Feb. 1 when they host Illinois at 7 p.m. in Oak Harbor, Ohio. Results: 133: No. 3 Tyler Graff (WIS) maj. dec. 10. Related Content: Results | Photos by Tech-Fall.com Clovis won the title at the 2013 Clinch Gear Battle for the Belt (Photo/John Sachs, Tech-Fall.com) TEMECULA, Calif -- Less than five points. That has been the difference between No. 9 Clovis, Calif., winning titles at the two showcase regular seasons in the Golden State as opposed to finishing second. After winning their home tournament -- the Doc Buchanan Invitational -- two weekends ago by two points (180-178) over No. 3 Wyoming Seminary, Pa., the Cougars were champions at the Battle for the Belt in Temecula Valley, Calif. by 2-1/2 points over No. 33 Bethlehem Catholic, Pa. Led by a tournament-high three champions and four finalists, Clovis used their nine total placers to score 228-1/2 points. Those champions were Jonas Gayton (126), No. 20 Adrian Salas (182), and No. 3 Nick Nevills (285), while Matt Weiss (195) finished as runner-up. Placing fifth were Jason Ladd (145) and Dominic Kincaid (152), seventh was Hector Coronado (220), while Tristan Gilliland (106) and Julian Gayton (113) took eighth. It should also be noted that the Cougars won while filling only twelve weights, as they did not have a 120 or 132-pound wrestler this weekend. Their 120 at the Doc Buchanan, Khristian Olivas, placed sixth there. While there are hundreds of matches during a tournament, it was the 126-pound championship match that one could say swung the title to Clovis. In a battle of two-time state placers, both runners-up last year, Gayton jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a period against Zeke Moisey (Bethlehem Catholic, Pa.). However, Moisey then bounced back to take a 6-3 lead. In a third period storm, Gayton answered back to earn the 10-9 victory. To finish second, Bethlehem Catholic, Pa. countered with a tournament-high ten placers. Lone champion for the Hawks was No. 3 Darian Cruz at 120 pounds, who was named Outstanding Wrestler for the lower weights after a 12-4 major decision victory over state champion Isaiah Locsin (Live Oak, Calif.), who is ranked No. 11 nationally. In the tournament, Cruz also had three falls and survived a 4-3 semifinal bout against state placer Jordan Gurrola (North Torrence, Calif.). As previously mentioned, Moisey finished as runner-up, and the Hawks also got third place finishes from Ryan Todora (138) and Josh Alpha (195). The other six placers for Bethlehem Catholic finished either fifth or sixth. In fifth were Luke Karam (106), Connor Hedash (160), Nick Cortopassi (170), and Jose Ortiz (195); while Lee Todora (132) and Mark Maloney (152) finished sixth. Despite just seven overall placers, No. 19 Poway, Calif. was able to finish a very close third with 220-1/2 points, as the Titans placed five inside the top three, one more than Clovis and Bethlehem Catholic respectively. Champions for Poway were Ralphy Tovar (132) and Victor Lopez (145). Tovar beat A.J. McKee (Long Beach Poly, Calif.) in the final by 3-0 decision, after McKee earned the 9-2 upset victory over No. 12 Ali Nasser (El Camino Real, Calif.) in the semifinal. Lopez was named Champion of Champions after his 15-6 major decision victory over state champion Anthony Valencia (St. John Bosco, Calif.), who is ranked No. 14 in the 138-pound weight class. His other results were three pins and a 6-4 semifinal victory over state placer Ladd. Tirso Lara (106) finished second, while third place finishes came from No. 17 Steve Cervantes (170) and Tim Chassen (220). Other Titan placers were Sergio Enloe (138) in fifth and Liam Sarahan (195) taking seventh. Joining nationally ranked Poway with seven placers in the tournament was No. 43 Vacaville, Calif., who finished fourth with 148-1/2 points. That disparity of 62 points can be explained in that five of the Vacaville placers took sixth and seventh, while their lone upper-half placers were champion Jeremy Sweany (195) and Gionn Peralta (113) finishing fourth. Placing sixth was Chris Lai (182), while Cameron Bailey (126), Bobby Ehman (132), Hayden Fry (145), and Zach Dawson (152) all finished seventh. Rounding out the individual award winners was Isaiah Martinez (Lemoore, Calif.), ranked No. 2 nationally at 160 pounds, and named Outstanding Wrestler of the upper-weights after a tournament run that included three pins and two technical fall victories. That included a 19-2 result in the finals over state champion Drew Smith (Damonte Ranch, Nev.). Other weight class champions were Adrian Camposano (Central, Calif.) at 106 pounds, No. 1 Zahid Valencia (St. John Bosco, Calif.) at 113, Geordan Martinez (Pine Creek, Colo.) at 138, Coleman Hammond (Bakersfield, Calif.) at 152, No. 13 Corey Griego (Sultana, Calif.) at 170, and No. 4 Spencer Empey (Reed, Nev.). 11. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The 11th-ranked Virginia wrestling team dominated throughout in a 38-0 dismantling of Duke Sunday afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium. The Cavaliers (11-3, 2-1 ACC) allowed just four offensive points in their 10 victories against the Blue Devils (2-4, 0-2). It also marked the Cavaliers’ first dual shutout since Feb. 12, 2010, also against Duke (40-0). No. 16 Jedd Moore (R-Sr., Mount Vernon, Ohio), No. 7 Nick Sulzer (R-So., Cleveland, Ohio), Stephen Doty (R-Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) and Zach Nye (R-Fr., Enola, Pa.) each earned bonus points in their wins at 157, 165, 184 and 197 pounds, respectively. Virginia started out with a 6-0 lead after 20th-ranked Derek Valenti (R-Sr., Newton, N.J.) won by forfeit at 149 pounds. Moore then rolled to a 22-8 win over Immanuel Kerr-Brown at 157, racking up 10 takedowns and 3:20 in riding time as he fell just short of a technical fall. Sulzer also dominated at 165 in a 23-7 technical fall against Randy Roden. Sulzer sealed the tech fall with 47 seconds left in the second period after piling up nine takedowns as well as three back points. Ranked 14th nationally at 174 pounds, Jon Fausey (R-Jr., Dalmatia, Pa.) earned a 5-0 win over Trey Adamson to earn his team-leading 25th victory of the year. Fausey recorded a takedown with 16 seconds left in the first period, and after choosing the bottom position to start the second, he reversed Adamson 25 seconds in before riding out the period. Doty captured a 15-3 major decision over Dylan Ryan at 184 pounds. After taking down Ryan with 1:51 left in the first period and remaining on top for the remainder of the stanza, Doty broke things open in the second with an escape point, followed by a takedown and a three-point near fall. Nye won by major decision, 11-3, at 197 against Michael Chapman. He clinched the major decision with a takedown with a second left in the final period, coupled with a bonus point for 1:49 of riding time. Derek Papagianopoulos (R-So., Burlington, Mass.) jumped out fast in his heavyweight match with Brian Self, throwing Self down for a takedown and putting him on his back for a two-point near fall. He built up 1:02 in riding time in a 6-2 decision. Ranked seventh nationally at 125, Matt Snyder (R-Sr., Lewistown, Pa.) started slow before dominating the final two periods in a 9-2 win over Peter Terrezza. Snyder was taken down in the first period but escaped 15 seconds later. After taking the top position in the second, Snyder twice recorded back points with a two-point near fall followed by a three-point near fall. The final two matches both went down to the wire. At 133 pounds, 13th-ranked George DiCamillo (Fr., Highland Heights, Ohio) outlasted Brandon Gambucci, 4-3. DiCamillo took Gambucci down with 1:11 left in the first period and maintained the advantage the rest of the period, but was taken down midway through the second before escaping with 20 seconds remaining. DiCamillo started the third on top and built his riding time to 1:16 before Gambucci escaped to tie the bout at three; the riding time point proved to be the difference though as DiCamillo won, 4-3. At 141 pounds Jimmy Nehls (R-Fr., Downers Grove, Ill.) scored a takedown with 18 seconds in the third to break a 1-1 tie and pick up a 3-2 win in a defensive struggle against 2012 NCAA qualifer Tanner Hough. The Nittany Lions, under the guidance of veteran head coach Cael Sanderson, received pins from David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio) and Ed Ruth (Harrisburg, Pa.) in the win. Sophomore All-American Nico Megaludis (Murrysville, Pa.) once again got the dual off to a hot start, posting a dominating 5-1 win over No. 17 Camden Eppert of Purdue. Purdue picked up a win at 149 as undefeated Ivan Lopouchanski, ranked No. 13, downed Nittany Lion James English (York, Pa.) 5-2 to cut Penn State's lead to 10-3. Junior James Vollrath (Richboro, Pa.) posted a strong 12-9 win over Purdue senior Tommy Churchard at 157 to give Penn State a 13-3 lead at intermission. Two-time All-American Taylor, ranked No. 2 at 165, continued the Lion onslaught after the break, getting a first period fall over Doug Welch at the 2:41 mark. Sophomore Matt Brown (West Valley City, Utah), ranked No. 3 at 174, was impressive as well, notching a 15-3 major over Kyle Mosier. Two-time All-American Ruth, ranked No. 1 at 184, matched Taylor's pin, this time with a second period fall over Dian Crowder at the 3:42 mark. Megaludis quickly took Eppert down by countering an early Eppert shot. Leading 2-1, Megaludis controlled the action for the bulk of the first period, keeping Eppert moving backwards while looking for a chance to score. Trailing 2-1, Eppert chose down to start the second period. Megaludis put together a strong ride, however, maintaining control for the entire period to lead 2-1 with 2:36 riding time after two periods. Megaludis chose down to start the third period and steadily worked his way to a reversal and a 4-1 lead at the 1:30 mark. Megaludis clinched the riding time point and then began looking for a chance to turn the ranked Boilermaker. While not managing to turn Eppert, Megaludis rolled to a 5-1 win with 3:43 in riding time. 133: Sophomore Jordan Conaway (Abbottstown, Pa.) met Purdue's Danny Sabatello at 133. The Boilermaker red-shirt freshman notched the first takedown, opening up a 2-0 lead at the 2:20 mark. Conaway forced a scramble trying to reverse Sabatello but the Boiler was able to force a stalemate and keep his 2-0 lead at the :35 mark. Conaway continued to work his magic underneath, however and scrambled his way to a reversal with :10 left, nearly turning Sabatello in the process. Tied 2-2, Conaway chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 3-2 lead. He then used a swift low single for his first takedown. He then turned Sabatello for three near fall points to lead 8-2 after two periods. Sabatello chose down to start the final stanza and quickly reversed Conaway to cut the lead to 8-5 after a quick Conaway escape. The Nittany Lion freshman was undaunted, however, notching another takedown and turning Sabatello for two more back points and a 13-4 lead. Conaway then rode the Boiler out to post the convincing 13-4 major decision. 141: Senior Bryan Pearsall (Lititz, Pa.) took on Boilermaker Brandon Nelsen at 141. The duo battled through a scoreless two minutes before Nelson instigated a scramble that resulted the duo fighting for position. The action resulted in a stalemate at the :20 mark and the bout moved to the second period tied 0-0. Nelsen chose down to start the second period and Pearsall nearly turned the Boiler for back points. But Nelsen continued to work and reversed Pearsall for a 2-0 lead at the :55 mark. Pearsall escaped to a 2-1 deficit with :40 left in the period and trailed by one heading into the third. Pearsall chose down to start the third period and returned the reversal favor but working his way around Nelsen for the two-pointer. Leading 3-2, Pearsall put together a strong ride, building up over 1:00 in riding time in the process. Pearsall went on to ride Nelsen out and posted the strong 4-2 win, putting Penn State up 10-0. 149: Senior James English (York, Pa.) faced off with No. 13 Ivan Lopouchanski in a key battle at 149. Lopouchanski entered the dual undefeated at 17-0. English forced the bout's first scramble, getting in on a low single that nearly led to a takedown on the edge of the mat. But the ranked Boiler forced a stalemate at the 1:15 mark and action returned to the center circle. The Lion senior took another solid single but once again Lopouchanski was able to defend the move and force a stalemate. Tied 0-0, English chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 1-0 lead. A quick scramble in the middle of the mat led to a Lopouchanski takedown, giving the Boilermaker a 2-1 lead at the 1:14 mark. English quickly escaped to a 2-2 tie. The Boilermaker added a second takedown with :20 left and then rode English out to lead 4-2 after two periods. Lopouchanski chose down to start the third and English cut him loose to a 5-2 score. English fought for a takedown but Lopouchanski was able to stay out of trouble and the Boilermaker picked up a hard-fought 5-2 win. 157: Junior James Vollrath (Richboro, Pa.) took on Purdue senior Tommy Churchard at 157. Vollrath used a quick low single to notch the bout's first takedown and led 2-1 early on. Vollrath continued to work on offense with Churchard's defense holding steady. With :25 on the clock, Vollrath used a head inside single to gain control of the Boilermaker and get a second takedown as the period ended. Trailing 4-1, Churchard chose down to start the second period and escaped to a 4-2 score. Vollrath continued his offensive pressure, picking up a third takedown at the 1:05 mark. But Churchard quickly reversed the Lion junior and cut the lead to 6-4. Vollrath worked his way to an escape and a 7-4 lead at the :22 mark. Vollrath chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to an 8-4 lead. After a Churchard shot, Vollrath used another low single for another takedown and led 10-5 after a quick Purdue escape. Churchard got his first takedown but was countered by a Vollrath reversal. Churchard had a final reversal of his own but Vollrath went on to post the 12-9 win. 165: Two-time All-American David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio), ranked No. 2 at 165, met up with Purdue's Doug Welch. Taylor wasted no time, getting a takedown five seconds into the bout. Taylor cut Welch loose and then immediately took him down again. Another cut led to a third takedown and a 6-2 Taylor lead just over 1:00 into the bout. Taylor then spent the next minute-plus trying to turn Welch but eventually cut him loose to an 8-4 lead with :35 on the clock. Welch took a low single that Taylor countered. Taylor then stepped over Welch, got the takedown and quickly turned the Boilermaker to his back, picking up another first period pin (this one at the 2:41 mark). 174: Sophomore Matt Brown (West Valley City, Utah), ranked No. 3 at 174, wrestled Purdue's Kyle Mosier. Brown picked up the first takedown early, opening up a 2-0 lead on the edge of the mat at the 2:24 mark. Brown then dominated action from the top position, working up over 1:00 in riding time. Mosier worked his way to an escape but Brown quickly slid down through a low double and another takedown. Brown wrapped up a cradle and picked up three near fall points to lead 7-1 after the opening stanza. Mosier chose down to start the second period but Brown continued to maintain control, building up nearly 3:00 total riding time before Mosier escaped. Brown forced Mosier into a first stall warning and then used a low diving double for a takedown and a 9-2 lead. Brown, leading 9-2 with over 3:00 of riding time, chose down to start the third period. Brown quickly escaped and then countered a Mosier shot, working his way into control and another takedown. Brown cut Mosier loose and worked for one final takedown. With just :01 left, Brown's continued pressure led to a final takedown and a 15-3 major. 184: Two-time All-American Ed Ruth (Harrisburg, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 184, met Boiler sophomore Dion Crowder. Ruth used a low single early to gain control of Crowder. But a minute's worth of work on the edge of the mat did not lead to any score and action resumed in the center circle scoreless. Ruth picked up his takedown with :55 left in the opening period and then turned Crowder to his back for two near fall points. Trailing 4-0, Crowder chose down to start the second period. Ruth quickly took the Boilermaker down and cut him loose to 6-1 lead. Another Ruth takedown and the Lion was up 8-1 with 1:24 on the clock. Ruth then gained control of Crowder's arm, turned him to his back and got the pin at the 3:42 mark, putting Penn State up 29-3. 197: Three-time All-American Quentin Wright (Wingate, Pa.), ranked No. 3 at 197, met No. 17 Braden Atwood in another of the dual's key bouts. Wright wasted no time taking an early lead, taking the ranked Boilermaker down for a 2-0 lead with just over 2:00 on the first period clock. Wright put together a strong ride, forcing Atwood into a stall warning and building up over 2:00 riding time with the ride-out. Wright chose down to start the second period and steadily worked his way to an escape and a 3-0 lead with 1:22 on the clock. The duo traded high shots with :35 left on the clock with no one connecting and Wright carried the 3-0 lead with 1:31 riding time into the third period. Atwood chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 3-1 deficit. Atwood was called for a second stall and Wright led 4-1 with :40 left with a clinched riding time point. The Lion senior battled his way for a final takedown and, with the bonus point, rolled to the 7-1 win. 285: Sophomore Jon Gingrich (Wingate, Pa.), ranked No. 16 at 285, battled Purdue's Alex White. The tandem battled through a scoreless first period and Gingrich chose down to start the second stanza. A quick escape gave the Nittany Lion sophomore a 1-0 lead and action resumed in the center circle. Gingrich then reset himself and blew through a high double leg for a takedown and a 3-0 lead with just over 1:00 on the clock. Gingrich then controlled the action, building up nearly 1:00 riding time before White escaped. Trailing 3-1, White chose down to start the third period but Gingrich controlled the action, working his way to more than 1:00 in riding time. Gingrich spent the entire period in control and, with the ride-out, rolled to the 4-1 win with 2:57 in riding time.
  13. ST. PARIS, Ohio -- In what may go down as one of the most bizarre and exciting high school dual meets ever, No. 12 St. Paris Graham pulled off a huge upset win over No. 2 St. Edward. With victories coming by injury defaults, stall calls, and every other way imaginable, the St. Paris Graham Falcons were able to top the St. Edward Eagles 30-29 in a very hotly contested dual meet. The dual meet started at 120 pounds and Graham moved their 126-pounder Mario Kastl down to 120 pounds and moved Brent Moore up to 126 pounds. The move worked to perfection as Graham took a 7-0 lead after the first two matches. In what was billed as the marquee match of the night, No. 2 Micah Jordan of St. Paris Graham faced No. 3 Dean Heil of St. Ed's at 132 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Jordan chose down and got out quickly, but Heil struck with a takedown to take the lead. Heil had a 3-2 lead late in the third when Jordan was able to strike with a beautiful takedown and then rode out Heil for the win. St. Ed's, trailing 10-0, finally got on the board with a dominating performance from No. 17 Colin Heffernan, who used an array of takedowns to get the Eagles back into the match with a technical fall. No. 3 Edgar Bright followed up with another technical fall of his own, winning 17 -2 over Garrett Jordan. The match at 152 pounds pitted No. 8 Alex Marinelli against No. 9 Markus Scheidel, and lived up to the billing. Scheidel was able to squeak out the 9-7 victory by using Houdini-like moves to avoid what seemed to be sure-fire takedowns. The best pound-for-pound wrestler in the country, Bo Jordan, made quick work of his opponent at 160 pounds, getting the only pin of the dual meet in a mere 31 seconds. St. Paris Graham took a 16-13 lead into intermission. St. Ed's was able to tie it up after Ray Barr at 170 was able to pull off the victory in a tight 6-5 victory. Then St. Paris Graham decided to forfeit against No. 2 Dominic Abounader. With St. Ed's now leading 22-16, Gabe Dzuro was able to add to that lead with a decision, bringing the lead to 25-16. With the door looking like it was about to close on St. Paris Graham's chance of winning, the perfect storm happened. At 220, Anthony Welty was able to upend Parker Knapp in a very odd way. Welty was leading in the third when the refs called the match after Knapp used his third injury timeout, subsequently forfeiting the match. This allowed St. Paris Graham right back in the dual meet. After Nichols for Ed's was able to get the major decision with a late takedown in the third, it was now up to the lightweights of Graham to win the dual meet. At 103, L.J. Bentley of St. Ed's was controlling the whole match going into the third and had a 4-1 lead over Ironman champion Eli Stickley. Bentley chose down, but was called for stalling for a second time, making it 4-2. However that wasn't the end of the stall calls by the ref, as he added an additional two more in the third period making it 5-4 in favor of Stickley. This victory by Stickley made it 29-25 in favor of St. Ed's. The dual meet now rested on the outcome of the final match. If St. Paris Graham were able to get anything more than a regular decision the dual meet would go to them in front of the home crowd. Seipel took a 10-3 lead going into the 3rd and looked like he was well on his way to an easy major decision, if not more. However, Sal Corrao was able to fight off the attacks until Seipel scored a takedown with 30 seconds remaining to take a 12-4 lead. Corrao immediately fought to get out and was close until Seipel was able to put him on his back for security points to win 14-4 and secure the upset over the No. 2 St. Edward Eagles. This will definitely go down as a dual for the ages as St. Paris Graham was able to get the dual meet victory by criteria having more six-point match victories after the teams split down the middle with seven wins a piece. 14. COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Navy junior 141-pound Joe Locksmith (Kissimmee, Fla.) scored a dramatic win over Terrapin junior Frank Goodwin in the night’s final bout to lead the Navy wrestling team to a 22-18 upset over 23rd-ranked Maryland Saturday night at the Comcast Pavilion in College Park. It was Navy’s first win over the Terps since 2010 and the Mids’ first victory in College Park since winning seven of the 10 bouts to earn a 25-12 win in 2007. “Wow, what an exciting match,” said Navy 13th-year Navy head coach Bruce Burnett. “I am so proud of the effort that our guys put forth tonight. From top to bottom, the guys competed hard. I told the guys before the match that I thought it would probably come down to bonus points and to not stop wrestling and that’s exactly what happened.” Although the two teams split the evening with five wins apiece, four of Navy’s five wins were bonus point wins while the Terps managed just one bonus point victory. Navy opened up a huge 13-0 advantage by earning bonus point victories in each of the first three bouts. Leading things off for the Mids was junior Raymond Borja (Virginia Beach, Va.) at 149 pounds, who had not been in action for Navy since the first week in December when he bowed out of the Nittany Lion Open due to injury. Borja dominated Maryland’s Shane Arechiga in his return to the mat, earning a 19-3 tech fall and ending the match at the 5:05 mark. Navy pushed its lead to 9-0 following a 9-0 major decision by 157-pound Bobby Barnhisel, (River Forest, Ill.), who improved to 23-5 on the year, including 2-1 in dual action. Sophomore Peyton Walsh (Glen Allen, Va.) improved his dual record to 3-0 after dealing the Terps’ Domenic DeRobertis a 14-2 loss at 165 pounds. “Ray Borja gave a phenomenal performance tonight and got us off to a great start that was continued by Bobby (Barnhisel) and Peyton (Walsh). We got on a great roll, but then we ran into some of their nationally-ranked wrestlers. While we may not have come out on top in those matches, I thought we wrestled very well, including Matt Miller who was in the match all the way to the end.” While Maryland would answer with three consecutive wins of its own, the Terps were unable lock up the score as all three of their victories were by decision. Fifth-ranked Josh Asper opened the Maryland run by edging out Navy’s Mathew Miller (Edgewood, Md.), ranked 13th at 174 pounds, by a 3-1 decision. Asper is now 9-1 on the year and 6-1 in dual action. Meanwhile it’s the second straight week Miller has put together a strong performance but would be denied by match’s end. Maryland’s Jimmy Sheptock, ranked seventh at 184 pounds, pushed his season record to 27-3 with a 5-1 win over 20th-ranked Mason Bailey (Fairmont, W.Va.), while 15th-ranked Christian Boley posted a 9-4 victory over Navy team captain Oscar Huntley (Stafford, Va.) at 197 pounds. Navy snapped the Terps’ momentum and extended its lead to 16-9 by way of a 3-1 sudden victory by heavyweight Dan Miller (Berlin, Md.) over the Terps’ Dallas Brown. Last week Miller was also forced into extra minutes to earn his victory, capturing a 7-2 win over Lehigh’s Jack Delia, 7-2, in the second sudden victory session. The Terps continued to fight their way back into the match as junior Shane Gentry nipped Navy sophomore Patrick Prada (Laurel, Md.) by a 3-2 count at 125 pounds, trimming the Mids’ lead to four at 16-12 with two matches remaining. “Pat just couldn’t hang on and lost right at the end of the match. It would have been a big upset because Gentry has been in and out of the rankings for the last few years.” Maryland went on to take its first and only lead of the match when 16th-ranked Geoffrey Alexander earned his seventh win of the season by fall, pinning Navy sophomore Colton Rasche (Plano, Ill.) at 2:34 and setting up the thrilling decisive match. Locksmith entered Saturday night’s match with a 12-9 overall record and a 1-0 mark, while the Terps’ Goodwin owned a 6-6 record including a 4-4 dual meet mark. “What a difference a week makes. Joe did everything a champion does this last week in watching his weight and wrestling and training hard. It not only paid off for Joe, but it paid off for the entire Navy wrestling prgoram. It was truly a team win and I could not be more proud of how we went out and wrestled and represented the program.” Results: 149: Raymond Borja (N) tech. fall Shane Arechiga (MD), 19-3 (5-0) 157: Bobby Barnhisel (N) maj. dec. 15. COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The Tigers roared through the end of 2012 and haven’t let up in the early going of 2013. Friday night in front of 506 at the Hearnes Center, the sixth-ranked MizzouWrestling program improved to a perfect 8-0 record on the year with a 37-7 victory over the Bison from North Dakota State. The Tigers won six of eightbouts on the mat, as well as two additional wins by forfeit at 157 pounds and 184 pounds. North Dakota State sent out arguably their best wrestler at 125 pounds in the first match of the night. Mizzou redshirt freshman Boomer Boyd (13-8) got the start against the No. 6-ranked Trent Sprenkle. Sprenkle only needed a couple of takedowns to control the match, and would eventually give the Bison a four-point team lead after the first weight class with a win by major decision, 13-2. The four-point deficit marked the first time that Mizzou had trailed in a dual meet in 2012-13. The deficit was short lived, as senior-captain Nathan McCormick (21-2) only needed 4:36 to give the Tigers the lead. McCormick tallied three takedowns in the first period for a 6-2 lead, and with 24 seconds remaining in the second, McCormick tilted Josh Rodriguez for the pin and six team points. Mizzou added a win by decision and a major at 141 and 149. Trevor Jauch (22-6) started at 141 pounds and got off to a quick start against his counterpart, Mark Erickson.Jauch took a five-point lead early in the first period with a takedown and a three-point nearfall immediately following. Jauch added a takedown in the second, and after a scoreless third he was victorious with an 8-1 decision. After a fourth place finish at the Southern Scuffle in early January, DrakeHoudashelt (17-7) came back to the Hearnes Center with the same intensity and aggression. Houdashelt defeated Joe Garner by major decision, his seventh of the season and his fourth in dual meets. The sophomore accumulated six takedowns and a two-point nearfall in his match. After a forfeit at 157 pounds, Missouri had a commanding 19-4 lead. No. 10 Zach Toal (16-9)took the mat against No. 6 Steven Monk in one of the more anticipated matches of the night. Monk had a great defense against Mizzou’s junior and went on to win 3-0. A takedown in the first period is all Monk needed to get his 25th win of the season. Senior Todd Porter (20-6) improved his perfect dual record to 8-0 with a win at 174 pounds. Porter has been a huge asset in dual meets, and after his 10-4 decision over NDSU’s Kurtis Julson, Porter has contributed 26 team points to the Tigers in his first year as a starter. Porter now has a team leading 30 takedowns in dual bouts after posting two in the first period, one in the second, and a finaltakedown in the final frame tonight. The Bison also failed to send out a grappler at 184 pounds to face off against Mizzou’s sixth-ranked Mike Larson, which officially sealed the victory for the Tigers. Brent Haynes (21-4), coming off his 100th career victory at the Southern Scuffle, added another to his fantastic career with an 11-2 major over Kallen Kleinschmidt. Haynes added five points via the nearfall in the 2nd period to put the match out of reach. He finished the match with 2:36 of riding time. The top-ranked Dom Bradley put on a great night-capper for the fans at the Hearnes with some huge takedowns en route to a win by technical fall, his first of the year. Bradley took down his opponent John Gusewelle three times in the first, andadded two three-point nearfalls as well. Bradley nearly had Gusewelle finished about a minute into the first frame but couldn’t manage to get his shoulders flat on the mat. Bradley had accumulated 2:53 of riding time by the end of the second period, and finally ended the bout at 6:39 with a takedown. 19-4 was the final. The Tigers, now 8-0, will be back in action tomorrow to face off against new conference foeCentral Michigan (9-3) at 1 p.m. The Chippewas are ranked 11th in Division I and have won the MAC Conference 11 straight years. It is sure to be a great day for Mizzou Wrestling as many of the former Mizzou Wrestlers will be in attendance, including Bellator MMA Lightweight World Champion Michael Chandler. Chandler recently defended his world title this past Thursday, and will be honored during the meet. It is also Military Appreciation Day, and the first 300 fans will receive a Mizzou Wrestling camouflage t-shirt. Stay tuned onMUTigers.com for all Mizzou Wrestling news. 16. FAIRFAX, VA -- In the 19th and 20th centuries duels were an arranged engagement in combat between two individuals, with matched weapons in accordance with agreed-upon rules. They were fought, not so much to kill the opponent as to gain satisfaction and restore one's honor. Secretary of State and Speaker of the House Henry Clay and Congressman John Randolph of Roanoke had a famous duel in 1826 in Virginia. On Saturday the Rider wrestling team gained much satisfaction in the arranged engagement of combat between conference teams, also in Virginia. The Broncs defeated host Mason and 21st ranked Binghamton for a pair of Colonial Athletic Association wins at the CAA Duals. "It was a good day," said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. For Rider (7-5, 2-1 CAA) senior Zac Cibula (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg Casco), sophomore Vinny Fava (Elmwood Park, N.J./Elmwood Park), freshman Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Caravel), junior Ramon Santiago (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville) and junior James Brundage (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) all won twice on the day. Against Mason (2-9, 0-2 CAA) sophomore Jimmy Morris (Northport, NY/St. Anthony's) won a major decision to cut the GMU lead to 5-4. Brundage also had a major decision. Against Binghamton (4-9, 2-1 CAA) Cibula won by fall to tie the score at 9-9. "That was the key to the match," Taylor said. "We needed to get something big after the upset at 133. We needed to get that back." Wolfe won at 184 to give Rider a 19-9 lead, defeating the top ranked 184 in the CAA. "That was probably the best win of the day," Taylor said. "That kid is pretty good (National Qualifier last year). Ryan wrestled today the way we knew he was capable of." Wolfe is now 17-9 on the season, 2-1 in duals replacing the injured Clint Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) in the line-up. "He performed well today against very good wrestlers." Brundage (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) had a major decision to give Rider a 16-9 lead. "James wrestled with more intensity today," Taylor said, "more purpose. He had a nice day as well." Freshman Curt Delia (Mullica Hill, NJ/Delsea) and sophomore Donald McNeil (Plainville, Mass./Wyoming Seminary) also picked up wins against GMU. Rider hosts Army in a dual meet Wednesday. "They have a good team," Taylor said of the Black Knights of West Point. "It will be nice to be home." It is always an advantage to have the home turf advantage in a duel, or a dual, especially against an entire army. 17. CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The No. 6 Big Red wrestling team picked up two Ivy victories on Saturday against Brown and Harvard. Cornell defeated Brown, 35-6, in the afternoon before picking up a 24-15 win over Harvard in the evening. Kyle Dake pinned both of his opponents on the day. Steve Bosak and Chris Villalonga also added falls. Before the dual against Brown began, senior Joe Stanzione picked up a 6-3 exhibition win over Zachary Tanenbaum at 141 pounds. After the national anthem and introductions, the dual began at 125 pounds. No. 6 ranked Garrett faced Billy Waterson. Garrett had a takedown right off the whistle and returned his opponent to the mat a few times when he would work his way to his feet. Garrett added three back points on a tilt to take a 5-0 lead into the second. Garrett immediately escaped from his opening down position in the second and added a double leg takedown. With three more back points, Garrett was up 11-0 going into the third. Garrett let Tanenbaum up from his opening down position in the third looking to score a tech fall. He added two more takedowns, but came up just one takedown short and settled for a 16-3 major decision. At 133 pounds, sophomore Bricker Dixon took on Beau Martino. Dixon held a 4-0 lead after the first with a takedown and two back points. Dixon escaped from his opening down position in the second and added a double leg takedown. The Big Red wrestler let his opponent up looking to score again, but time ran out in the period. In the third, Dixon let Martino up from his opening down position. Martino notched his first takedown of the match, but Dixon would escape to win an 8-4 decision. Brown's Cortlandt Choate got on the board first with a takedown at 141 pounds against No. 6 Mike Nevinger. Nevinger spun out for an escape to come within a point. Choate chose to start the second at neutral, and neither wrestler scored in the period. Nevinger chose top in the third and added a nearfall at the end of the period. With riding time, he won a 4-2 decision. At 149 pounds, No. 15 ranked Villalonga gave up the first takedown. The Big Red junior escaped and grabbed a takedown of his own and pinned his opponent in 2:57. Jesse Shanaman took the mat against Phil Marano. After a scoreless first period, Shanaman had a one point lead after the second with an opening escape. Shanaman rode Marano out in the third to win a 2-0 decision. No. 1 ranked Dake made quick work of Jack Roberts at 165 pounds. Dake quickly took down his opponent and added a three point nearfall before winning by fall in 1:26. At 174 pounds, Marshall Peppelman wrestled against Ricky McDonald. The two were scoreless after the first period. McDonald escaped from his choice in the second, but Peppelman took his down to hold a 2-1 advantage. Peppelman escaped to open the third to win a 3-1 decision. No. 4 ranked Bosak faced Ophir Bernstein at 184 pounds. Bosak grabbed a takedown off a single leg and racked up 2:32 in riding time in the first period. Bosak quickly escaped to open the second and added a takedown off a scramble to hold a 5-0. The Big Red senior tried to turn his opponent, but Bernstein kept level. Bernstein escaped, but the returning NCAA champion immediately took him down again. Bosak added a takedown in the third to win a 10-2 major decision. At 197 pounds, Jace Bennett and Sterling Hecox traded shots back and forth before the Brown wrestler came out on top for a takedown. Bennett quickly escaped, but Hecox caught him and pinned him in 1:35. At heavyweight, Stryker Lane faced DJ Ingham. Lane took down his opponent at the edge of the mat, but Ingham would escape after Lane accumulated 23 seconds of riding time. Ingham couldn't escape from his choice down position in the second, and Lane added to his riding time. Lane quickly escaped from his opening down position in the third and added a takedown midway through the period. With 3:37 in riding time, Lane won a 6-1 decision. Exhibition: 141: Joe Stanzione dec. 18. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The ninth-ranked Virginia Tech wrestling team won seven of the eight matches contested Saturday inside Carmichael Auditorium, downing the University of North Carolina 32-9. Things got off to a rough start for the Hokies as 13th-ranked Nathan Krausser pulled the upset for the Tar Heels at 125 pounds, beating fourth-ranked Jarrod Garnett 9-2. Kraisser, who Friday night upset Virginia’s sixth-ranked Matt Snyder, took down Garnett and turned him for three points in the first period and then got two more takedowns in the third period to ice the win. The loss was just the ninth dual meet defeat in 65 career matches for the senior from Newark, Del. At 133 pounds, Erik Spjut got a takedown with 17 seconds left to battle back from an early deficit and break a 4-4 tie to beat UNC’s Joey Ward 6-5 to tie the team score back up. The Hokies forfeited at 141 pounds to make it 9-3 in favor of the Tar Heels, but sixth-ranked Nick Brascetta dominated the action at 149 pounds, using three takedowns to beat Christian Barber, 8-2. Jesse Dong got a forfeit win at 157 pounds to give Tech a 12-9 at the halfway mark and then fifth-ranked Pete Yates used a takedown and two separate, three-point nearfall combinations in the second period to pitch a 10-0 shut out of John Staudenmayer at 165 pounds. The most exciting match of the bout came at 174 pounds with Tech’s Austin Gabel and UNC’s Tanner Eitel needing the tiebreaker to settle things. Tied at 1-1 after regulation and sudden victory, Gabel started the tiebreaker on the bottom and escaped late, but dove right back in on Eitel’s legs to get the takedown at the buzzer. Eitel was able to escape in his portion of the session, but Gabel held on for the big 4-2 win. After giving up a takedown early, Nick Vetterlein used four takedowns, including two big ones in the second period, to pull away from UNC’s Alex Utley and pick up a 10-6 win at 184 pounds. Derrick Borlie had his way with UNC’s Frank Abbondanza at 197 pounds, using five takedowns and a nearfall combination to roll to the 15-3 major decision. At heavyweight, David Marone made quick work of Cody Klempay, pinning him at the 1:30 mark in the first period. It was the first pin of the season for the sixth-year senior. “Overall, it was a decent team performance,” said Tech head coach Kevin Dresser. “A job well done by Spjut and Gabel winning in a couple of toss-up matches. We have some guys who are learning how to grind and we have some guys who still need to get a lot better at it.” With the win, the Hokies moved to 10-2 overall and 3-0 in the ACC. The Tar Heels dropped to 4-4, 0-2 in the league. Tech will be back in action Sunday, hosting NC State at 2 p.m. inside Cassell Coliseum. Admission is free. He would ride out Fry in the second period, and owned 3 minutes 46 seconds in riding time. Fry would make things interesting in the third period with three takedowns. The last came with 16 seconds left to close tie it at 6-6, but DePalma would escape with ten seconds remaining and Fry could not come up with a tying takedown. DePalma improved to 19-9 with the decision. Johnny Greisheimer followed with a 6-2 decision at 165 lbs. over LHU's Aaron McKinney, who came in with 23 wins. The junior used a first period takedown and second period escape for a 3-0 lead after two periods. McKinney closed to 3-1 with an escape to start the third, but Greisheimer picked up an insurance takedown with 37 seconds left for a 5-1 lead. McKinney's escape and a riding time point closed out the scoring as Greisheimer improved to 14-8. Patrick Jennings put an end to a long losing streak at 174 lbs. The redshirt freshman prevailed by major decision, 10-1, over Travis Moyer to snap a ten-match losing skid and improve to 11-17. He recorded the lone points in the first period with a takedown, and followed with an escape and takedown in the second period for a 5-0 lead. He would add two more takedowns in the third and had 1:17 in riding time. Freshman Vince Pickett fell just shy of upsetting PSAC champion Fred Garcia (20-8) at 184 lbs., as the Bald Eagles got on the board with a 3-2 decision to make it 10-3. Following a scoreless first period, Garcia used an escape and takedown for a 3-0 lead, with Pickett escaping to make it 3-1 after two periods. The only scoring in the third period was a Pickett escape midway through the period. He had one last shot in the final seconds, but could not complete the takedown while falling to 17-11. Edinboro picked up pins in the next two matches, and three of the next four. Warren Bosch registered his sixth fall of the year when he won by fall at 4:03 over Joseph Rimel at 197 lbs. He had trailed 3-2 after one period, but he began the second period on top and was able to cradle Rimel in a scramble. The redshirt freshman is now 11-12 while snapping a four-match losing streak. Ernest James took a 5-4 lead in his all-time series with Harry Turner, ending the heavyweight match very quickly. His quick takedown quickly led to a cradle, and the match was over in just 24 seconds. James, ranked 18th by Amateur Wrestling News and 20th by InterMat, is now 18-7 while registering his sixth fall of the season and 28th of his career. Lock Haven would pick up its other win at 125 lbs., as Bobby Rehm pulled away for a 9-2 decision over Kory Mines. Mines opened the scoring with a takedown in the final minute of the first period, and led 2-1 after one period. Rehm, who improved to 19-7, took control in the second with an escape and takedown for a 4-2 lead. He started on top to start the third, and turned Mines twice for four total near-fall points. Mines is now 12-13. A.J. Schopp showed why he is ranked fourth in both polls. The sophomore improved to 22-2 with his 13th fall of the year and 32nd of his career, prevailing at 2:04 over Matt Bryer. He dominated the match with a takedown just four seconds into the match, extending the lead to 8-0 midway through the period with back points before finally working for the fall. Mitchell Port kept pace with Schopp as the fifth-ranked wrestler at 141 lbs. earned a hard-fought 4-0 decision against Dan Neff. The two had met in the PSAC finals, with Port winning 2-0. 22. DALTON, Ga. -- Lindenwood-St. Charles held off a strong rally by Liberty in the upperweights, then sealed the NCWA National Duals championship with a pin at heavyweight for a 30-19 win and its first NCWA title of any kind. The win avenged the Lions' 10-point loss to Liberty in last year's title match, and closed a dominating tournament run. Lindenwood gave up only 18 points through five matches going into the championship, and closed the two-day event losing only seven matches in all (plus one forfeit). The Lions and Liberty were the first two programs to appear in consecutive finals in the NCWA National Duals' five-year history. No team has repeated as champion. "This is the first time we've had our full lineup together this season," Lions coach Chad Smith said. "Everyone contributed. We took second last year, so I think we came in with something to prove. The guys bought in and believed in themselves." Lindenwood, seeded second, opened with a bang, hitting for two pins from Blayne Shockley and Michael Caldwell in the opening matches for a 12-0 lead. The Lions' fast start continued with decisions by Jacob Janes (3-1), Craig Chiles (6-4), Derrick Weller (3-1) and Luke Roth (4-2) to push the lead to 24-0. Liberty got its rally started in an unusual way, earning consecutive defensive falls from Keyshaun Ward at 174 and Royal Brettrager at 184 to cut the Lions' hard-earned lead in half at 24-12. Aaron Thompson, the defending NCWA champion at 197, won a 4-0 match over Padric Lynch to earn Liberty another three points. But the ability of Lynch, a freshman, to hold off additional points by the more experienced Thompson was a key to the match. "That was huge. To have a freshman come in and hold off their champion says a lot," Smith said. "Lynch had a great tourney for us." Andrew Wilson, the NCWA runner-up at heavyweight last year, got a 13-5 major decision at 235 to get Liberty within 24-19, setting up a possible clinching win for the Flames that seemed improbable only minutes earlier. But Lindenwood heavyweight Matthew Atley spent little time in scoring a pin in the first period to seal the match. "That was remarkable too," Smith said. "(Atley) had not wrestled since high school five years ago. He's been playing football for us, and came out to wrestle in his final semester. Then he comes up and wins a dual for us . . . wow." The fourth-seeded Lions knew they'd need a strong start after watching Liberty rally twice to win earlier matches with their strength in the upper weights buoyed by returning All-Americans Royal Brettrager, Aaron Thompson and Andrew Wilson. The contrast played out in the semifinals, where Lindenwood gave up the 125-pound match against Central Florida, but then won the next eight matches to take control in a 30-15 win. In Liberty's semifinal against top-seeded Maryland-Baltimore County, the Flames won six straight matches starting at 157 pounds and came from behind to take a 26-19 win. "We needed a good start down low, because we knew they were tough up top," said Smith, who said the title win is a big confidence boost for his team as it goes into a tough stretch on its schedule. The Lions face Central Missouri on Thursday, then take on Central Oklahoma on Friday. Central Florida won the final two matches, including a pin by heavyweight Shane Haller, to take third place with a 27-21 win over Md.-Baltimore County. Following UCF's Brian Radli's pin at the start, neither team led by more than five points going into the heavyweight match. Grand Valley State won the fifth place match, 35-16, over Marion Military Institute (Ala.), helped by two pins and two forfeits among the first five matches. Lindenwood-Belleville took seventh place, 35-21, over The Apprentice School. Seven of the top eight seeds advanced to the quarterfinals, and sets up the NCWA Championships in Allen, Texas, outside of Dallas from March 14-16. The high school division, in its second year, featured four teams from three different states. Auburn (Ala.) High School (Ala.) clinched the title with a 38-29 win over Pigeon Forge (Tenn.) in a round-robin format tournament. Auburn tied with Fort Campbell (Ky.) with a 2-1 record, but won the title based on its 37-36 win over Fort Campbell in the opening round. Wayne County of Monitcello, Ky., also competed. While Stanford was able to get back on the scoreboard by winning a decision at 165 pounds, the Falcons earned three more victories, including back-to-back major decisions by Dan Barringer (Jr., Monument, Colo.) and Devin Hightower (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively. Senior Josh Mohr (Pewaukee, Wis.) gave Air Force its final individual win of the match with a decision at 197 pounds before a Cardinal fall in the heavyweight bout brought the team score to 24-12. 24. ANN ARBOR -- Just over a month ago at the Tim Horn Duals, Detroit Catholic Central pulled off a 33-31 upset victory over St. Johns, as the teams split matches and the Shamrocks won the bonus point battle. However, in the interim, the Redwings have shifted most of their middle-weights down a class, enabling defending state champion Brant Schafer to fit into the lineup. It also more than closed one of what were three relative holes in the lower weight portion of the lineup. It was that lineup shift, and the earlier than expected return of Ben Whitford from the injury that precluded him from last Saturday's DCC Super Duals, which enabled St. Johns to win the dual earlier this afternoon at Cliff Keen Arena on the campus of the University of Michigan. The following weight classes had differing outcomes in comparison to the dual meet last month: 125: Zac Hall (St. Johns) dropped down from his 130 win in last month's match to earn a pin against Evan Toth, while in the December dual meet, Evan Toth had a win by fall. NET: St. Johns +12 135: Instead of a forfeit, as Ken Bade (Detroit Catholic Central) was injured earlier in the day, the Shamrocks won by a decision this time around, Myles Amine over Mark Bozzo. NET: St. Johns -3 145: Josh Pennell (St. Johns) dropped down from the 152 match of last month to earn an 11-2 major decision victory over Chris Naubert. Last month, Naubert upended Bozzo 5-1. 25. CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team knocked off #13 Oklahoma 18-15 with some inspiration from the only Olympic champion in UNI's history. UNI remains undefeated at home for the season and against Oklahoma. The Sooners hadn't been to the West Gym since 1950. In 1988, the Panthers took its final win in the series from the Sooners, who won the next three matchups on the road. That streak ended with tonight's win. "We keep preaching to our guys about effort," said head coach Doug Schwab. "If you keep working hard and hustling, good things will happen. It was definitely a team effort tonight." For the second time in as many weeks, the dual's fate came down to the final match, and UNI prevailed when heavyweight Blayne Beale got a last-second takedown to beat the Sooners' Keldrick Hall and secure a team victory. After a scoreless first period, Hall led the match 1-0 heading into the second period. Beale got an escape early in the third period and finished it with a takedown with just two seconds left on the clock. The Panthers started the meet by dedicating the competition mat to Bill Smith, a former UNI wrestler. Smith is the United States' oldest Olympic wrestling gold medalist, capturing the gold medal in the 160.5-pound weight class at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki, Finland. The Panthers got off to a slow start, but once David Bonin got a win at 157 pounds, the team was nearly unstoppable. Bonin took his match into double overtime to get the Panthers on the board, 3-12. "We got behind, and guys responded," said Schwab. Jarrett Jensen lost to #4 Patrick "Bubby" Graham by decision in the 165-pound weight class, but momentum quickly returned to UNI's favor. The Panthers refused to give up any bonus points and got a couple of its own in the 174-pound match. After earning stalling points, Cody Caldwell was awarded a medical forfeit over Matt Reed to pull the Panthers within six points of Oklahoma. "He kept making that guy work, and he got him to the point that he couldn't even return to the match," said Schwab. From there, UNI took every match away from Oklahoma. Ryan Loder, who has given up just nine points all season to opponents added another decision to career wins at 184 pounds. "I know he's not happy that he got any bonus points," said Schwab. "He sets out to get bonus points every time." Loder has now outscored his opponents 81-9. Blaize Cabell just entered the dual lineup for the Panthers last weekend and got his first win in that spot against Brad Johnson. Cabell was down heading into the third period but earned enough points to get the one-point decision over Johnson, who had accumulated riding time. "That was a huge comeback for him," said Schwab. "I haven't seen a match like that for him in the last two years. So that is a huge confidence booster." Oklahoma entered the dual with four guys ranked. Joey Lazor, ranked 15th, faced the top wrestler in the nation at 141 pounds. Kendric Maple was the eventual winner, but Lazor kept it close, only losing by three points. "It's hard to come back when you get down as far as he did," said Schwab. "But that should have built some confidence for Lazor that he is not that far from the top guy in the nation." At one point, Lazor was down four points. "I like how he competed. I don't think he conceded anything to that guy. I think he got stronger as the match went on, and he realized he could ride him," said Schwab. The win came in front of UNI's largest crowd this season. "The atmosphere was awesome. The crowd was incredible. It makes a difference for our guys," said Schwab. "You could see the other team was uncomfortable with the crowd on top of them." UNI hits the road to take on Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Northwestern Sunday at noon and 2 p.m. The Panthers will return home Jan. 27 to close out their home season.
