  1. PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Freshman Joey Galasso picked up a signature win in front of his hometown fans and the Cornel lwrestling team set up a Saturday evening Ivy title match with Princeton by running through Penn 21-9 on Saturday afternoon at the Palestra. Cornell evened its record at 5-5 (4-0 Ivy), while Penn slipped to 5-4 (2-2 Ivy). All three of Penn's nationally ranked wrestlers were defeated, with Galasso's victory over No. 12 C.J. Cobb at 149 pounds coming as the lone upset. He rode a first period takedown to the victory that sets him up for seeding at the upcoming EIWA championship in front of a loud, friendly gymn that was cheering the local native on. He took a 3-2 lead into the the final seconds of the third and was able to defend a late shot and go behind to clinch the 5-2 victory. Top-ranked Gabe Dean had yet another close match with rival and 15th-ranked Lorenzo Thomas at 184, but a takedown in sudden victory handed him the 7-5 triumph. Dean led 4-2 after one with a pair of takedowns, but Thomas was able to earn a pair of nearfall swipes to tie it up. The two each earned escapes and neither was able to put together an effective shot over the final three minutes before Dean came out the back of a scramble in sudden victory to pick up his 108th career victory. Cornell had the first takedown in the eight of the 10 matches and had a dominnant 22-5 edge in takedowns on the night. While all seven Big Red wins came by decision (as well as all three of Penn's wins), five were a takedown away from a major decision. Freshman heavyweight Jeramy Sweany, feshman 125-pounder Dalton Macri, senior 133-pounder Nahshon Garrett and senior 165-pounder Duke Pickett all won decisive decisions over Quaker wrestlers, all falling one late takedown or turn away from picking up bonus points. Junior Brian Realbuto avenged one of his three losses from the Southern Scuffle wit ha workmanlike 8-2 decision over 15th-ranked Casey Kent. The Big Red will go for its 14th consecutive Ivy League title and its 73rd straight Ivy dual meet win when it meets Princeton at 7 p.m. in Dillon Gymnasium i na match broadcast on the Ivy League Digital Network. 2. FAIRFAX, Va. -- Franklin & Marshall's wrestling team got back in the win column on Saturday afternoon, taking two of the final three matches to down George Mason by a narrow 21-17 score in Fairfax, Va. The victory was the first over the Patriots since 2006 and marked the Diplomats first road win on the season. F&M improved to 4-12 with the decision, while George Mason fell to 6-10. Leading by a slight 15-14 score heading into 184, F&M's Anthony Mancini delivered the Diplomats a clutch 5-1 decision win. Charles Kerkesner (197) clinched the contest in the next bout, dominating his opponent with four takedowns en route to an 11-5 decision. Aaron Moldoff led off with a late third-period pin (5:46) at 125, before the Patriots cut into the gap with an 8-4 decision at 133. Rick Durso held off his opponent at 141, registering a 4-3 decision to extend his winning streak to 10 straight. F&M's senior grappler has now won 18 of his previous 20 bouts. The matchup at 149 was high-scoring and back-and-forth throughout the opening two periods, before Jason Bing pinned his opponent late in the stanza (4:54) and put the Diplomats out in front by a 15-3 margin. The Patriots climbed back into the competition with wins in three straight, but decisions from Mancini and Kerkesner put an end to the rally. Antonio Pelusi appeared to have a victory in hand at 285, but a last second takedown from George Mason's Matt Voss forced overtime. In the first tiebreaker, Voss recorded another takedown to clinch the contest. 3. WASHINGTON, D.C./FAIRFAX, Va. -- Tyler Smith, Victor Lopez, Rustin Barrick, Tom Sleigh and Joe Stolfi each won two bouts to lead the Bucknell wrestling team to a couple of road victories Saturday. The Bison opened the day with a 24-16 win against EIWA foe American and then traveled a short distance west to take on George Mason in a non-conference match and defeated the Patriots 32-12. Bucknell (10-5, 4-2 EIWA) extended its winning streak to four matches. The Bison have won those four matches by a combined total of 102 points. Bucknell won 13 of the 18 contested bouts in the two duals on Saturday. The Bison totaled four pins, two tech falls and a major decision. In the opener against American (4-8, 1-6 EIWA), Grim Gonzalez opened the scoring for Bucknell at 133 pounds with his first fall of the year. Smith and Lopez followed with wins by decision to stake the Bison to a 12-6 lead. The Eagles then claimed the 157 and 165 bouts, but Bucknell won three of the last four on its way to the eight-point win. It marked the third straight Bison victory in the series. A win by Barrick at 174 pounds gave Bucknell the lead (15-13) for good and extended his personal winning streak to 12, which he later upped to 13. Sleigh, who defeated Jason Grimes 5-4 on the riding time point at 184 pounds, and Stolfi, who sealed the outcome with a pin of Jake Scanlan, earned the other wins for the Bison. It was Stolfi's team-high ninth pin of the season. George Mason (7-11) opened the nightcap with a win by forfeit at 125 and a 19-18 decision at 133 pounds to start up 9-0. The Bison captured seven of the final eight bouts, including the final five in a row. Smith and Lopez recorded back-to-back pins at 141 and 149, while Sleigh and Tyler Greene had consecutive tech falls at 184 and 197. Stolfi concluded the match with a 12-3 major decision over Matt Voss as he improved to 15-1 on the season. DURHAM, N.C. -- The eighth-ranked Virginia Tech wrestling team completed back-to-back undefeated seasons against ACC competition on Saturday, downing Duke 31-9 to close regular season competition. No. 3 Joey Dance was the first to put points on the board for the Hokies, winning a 15-5 major decision over Thayer Atkins. After a forfeit at 133 pounds by Duke, Tech led 10-0 through two weight classes. Tech would win six bouts on the afternoon, including a 12-7 decision from No. 4 Nick Brascetta. Five different Tech grapplers earned bonus victories over the Blue Devils, with major decisions from Dance, Solomon Chishko, Zack Zavatsky and Ty Walz and a pin for Zach Epperly. The Hokies will learn their fate in the National Duals later this weekend, earning one of the eight spots to compete at various Big Ten campuses as part of the postseason series. 7. Don't believe everything you read. Things are not always what they initially appear to be. Those two statements are true regarding at least three recent news stories with a connection to wrestling. The original reports proved not to be true. InterMat thought it might be helpful to set the record straight on these wrestling-related stories ... to prevent readers from any potential embarrassment, as in "Did you hear the one about …" only to have your friends tell you, "Not true!" Ex-wrestler kills mountain lion -- not Last week, media from around the world reported that a California man described as a "former NCAA wrestler" fought off a mountain lion that attacked him near a popular hiking trail. He fought back, breaking the cougar's neck, killing it. The man went into great detail about the attack in an interview with a San Luis Obispo TV station, showing scratches and scars on his body. The TV station did some digging, and found holes in the man's story. Within a few days, the "victim" was forced to admit he had made up the story. No word as to whether the "former NCAA wrestler" part was fiction, too. Burroughs to train MMA star -- not A week ago, a number of mixed martial arts websites were reporting that Ultimate Fighting Championships had hired Jordan Burroughs, 2012 Olympic gold medal-winning freestyle wrestler and two-time NCAA champ for University of Nebraska, to coach UFC fighter Conor McGregor in wrestling. The story may have seemed credible, as a number of MMA media outlets quoted another fighter … with some articles lambasting the UFC for playing favorites by helping one fighter with his alleged wrestling deficiency. This story was refuted by two people who should know -- the man who heads up UFC, and the wife of Jordan Burroughs. Dana White, UFC president, strenuously denied the story, saying "That's ridiculous." Lauren Burroughs posted this message on Twitter: "Twice now today I have read or listened to completely false or inaccurate "news" reports regarding my husband's career." It only makes sense. Jordan Burroughs has plenty of things to occupy his time these days. Such as preparing for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro this summer. Hawkeyes in trouble for endorsing Trump -- not Just before the Iowa caucuses, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump held a rally at the University of Iowa Fieldhouse. Prior to the rally, Trump had met with some members of the Hawkeye football and wrestling teams … then, while on stage, the multimillionaire candidate called each set of athletes out of the audience to join him. After acknowledging the football team (who gave him a replica jersey), Trump shifted to wrestling. "Get the wrestlers up here," Trump said. "Come on, fellas. Where are they? Where are they? These guys -- I'm not messing with 'em ... Look at these guys. Undefeated team, University of Iowa." Some media outlets immediately reported that the student-athletes and/or Trump may have violated NCAA endorsement rules. However, within a couple days, the NCAA responded to those news reports, saying, "Acting on his or her own, a student-athlete may endorse a political candidate." Endorsement or not, sharing the stage with the winning Hawkeye wrestling team did not make Trump a winner in the Hawkeye state. Although polls had predicted he would win the Iowa Republican caucus, Trump came in second.

  9. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- On a night when Coach Heffernan and staff honored the 2015-2016 senior class, it was one of its own that clinched the Senior Night victory for the Fighting Illini. After an upset victory for the visiting Golden Gophers at 174 pounds, the match stood tied entering the final bout. Jeff Koepke improved to 18-5 on the season with a dual-clinching 8-4 decision over Chris Pfarr of Minnesota. The victory moves Illinois to 13-5 on the season, while Minnesota drops to 9-8. "He's a senior, it's a great way for him to go out on Senior Night, last home dual meet," said Head Coach Jim Heffernan. "Koepke's a senior, he's been through a lot of this stuff before. I was pretty confident he would keep his composure and wrestle well." A match that seesawed back and forth to the end, it was Minnesota who struck first. Beginning the match at 197 pounds, No. 3 Brett Pfarr defeated Emory Parker. However, Parker gave an admirable effort against the third-ranked grappler. Trailing 5-1 after period one, and 7-3 after period two, Parker responded with an escape and takedown to cut it to 7-6. Unfortunately for Parker, Pfarr added one more takedown to seal a 10-5 decision. The Gophers increased their margin to the largest of the night with an 8-0 shutout by No. 9 Michael Kroells over Brooks Black. The four-point major decision pushed the Illini deficit out to seven points. Having battled through the buzz saw that is the Big Ten as a true freshman, Francis Edelen was in search for his first career Big Ten victory. After Skyler Perry of Minnesota opened with a takedown, Edelen would shut Perry for the remaining six minutes. Edelen earned am escape in period one, a stalling point in period two, and another escape point in period three to edge Perry, 3-2. Head Coach Jim Heffernan expressed how proud he was of how the freshman has continued to fight throughout the year. "Francis [Edelen] has really hung in there; he's in a tough spot," said Heffernan. "He's wrestled a lot of good guys lately, so the fact that he was able to hang in there, and find a way to win, I was really proud of him. We got an upset win early, and we gave up one late, so Francis won the meet for us essentially." Returning after battling illness last weekend, No. 2 Zane Richards took control of his bout with Sam Brancale early and often. Richards used two takedowns in the opening frame, and then piled on two four-point near falls in the second period. Richards finalized his 21st victory of the season in the final period with a takedown to win 17-2. The win solidified a perfect regular season for the red-shirt junior from Carbondale, Illinois. After Illinois stormed back to take the lead 8-7 through four matches, Minnesota responded with victories in the next two weight classes to reclaim the advantage. First, No. 6 Tommy Thorn used two first-period takedowns to jump out 4-1 over the Illini freshman, and then holding on for a 6-2 final tally. At 149, No. 16 Jake Short and Illinois' Kyle Langenderfer fought for seven straight minutes, each taking turns venting frustration throughout. Although Langenderfer stayed within reach for most of the seven minutes, Short held on for an 8-3 decision. Although trailing 13-8, the Illini entered the final four matches of the dual confident after only allowing one bonus point and stealing the three points at 125 pounds. No. 2 Isaiah Martinez brought the Fighting Illini grapplers back to within a point of Minnesota by putting on an exhibition of strength against Gopher Brandon Kingsley. Martinez used six takedowns and a reversal, while only allowing escape points, to take a 15-6 major decision victory. Wrestling for the final time at Huff Hall, senior No. 6 Steven Rodrigues capped his career on Huff Hall's mat with his seventh Big Ten victory of the season. Much like Martinez in the match prior, Rodrigues wore out his opponent Brandon Krone with 10 takedowns, six of which came in the final period, in route to a 21-8 major decision that put the Illini ahead 16-13. The upset of the dual came at 174 pounds, with Minnesota's Nicholas Wanzek defeating No. 4 Zac Brunson in a highly contested seven-minute tussle. After an early takedown by Brunson, Wanzek reversed Brunson and got a shoulder on the mat for a surprising four-point near fall. Now trailing 6-2, Brunson got an escape and takedown to move within one after the first three minutes. After outscoring Wanzek 3-2 in the second frame, Brunson and Wanzek entered the final two minutes knotted at eight. Brunson got an escape to start the final period, but not before Wanzek moved his riding time past the one-minute threshold. Now needing a takedown to win the match, Brunson was unable to get back to his offense. Wanzek used one final takedown, plus the added riding time point, to close out a 13-10 decision to tie the dual. The Fighting Illini looked to senior Jeff Koepke to cap his senior night with a dual-clinching victory. The senior maintained his poise following the upset of Brunson, using two takedowns in period one to forge ahead 4-2. After a quiet second period, Koepke finished off Chris Pfarr of Minnesota to win the match by a tally of 8-4. The win improves Koepke to 18-5 on the season, and gave No. 12 Illinois a 19-16 win over No. 16 Minnesota. "I really wanted to go out there and give my best match for the fans that have been supporting me all these years," said Koepke. I've got to get to my attacks earlier, and I did that [tonight]. I got the first takedown for the first time in awhile. I saw Zac [Brunson] kind of struggle to get position, so I turned the pace down a little bit. I could have gone for a higher score, but I kept it safe and got the win." Following their back-to-back wins to end the regular season, Coach Heffernan says that the team will use the next three weeks to rest up and tweak some things heading into Big Ten Championships in Iowa City on March 5 & 6. "We'll give them some time off to be regular college students, get organized, because the next three weeks will go by fast," said Heffernan. "We'll do a lot of good training, clean things up, and spend some time getting healthy heading into Big Ten Championships." Results: 197: No. 3 Brett Pfarr (MINN) dec. 10. GREELEY, Colo. -- The Northern Colorado Bears wrestled in their second to last dual of the season on Friday night, defeating the Utah Valley Wolverines, 19-18. UNC won five of the ten matches, including decision wins at 125, 157 and 184, with bonus point wins at 165 and 197. True freshman Jesse Reed picked up the first win of the night for the Bears with what was also his first dual win of his collegiate career. Reed fought hard in the first period, earning a quick escape after being taken down, followed by a takedown of his own to go into the second period up 3-2. He rode tough in the second, not letting his opponent up for the entire two minutes. Reed then managed another escape and takedown in the third period to make the final score 7-2 with the riding time advantage. "Jesse has made a ton of improvement," head coach Troy Nickerson said. "A perfect example would be that he wrestled this same opponent in early November at the Cowboy Open and only beat him 3-1. He knows he's getting better, and he's constantly doing the right things to continue to improve." The Bears dropped the remaining three matches going into intermission, but Eleazar De Luca came through for the Bears at 157 pounds, picking up another decision win over UVU's Raider Lofthouse. De Luca and Lofthouse had a back and forth first period, each picking up a takedown and escape to keep them deadlocked at 3-3. An escape for De Luca to start the period, followed by a UVU takedown and yet another escape for De Luca kept them tied to go into the third period, 5-5. De Luca picked up a takedown to take the lead, and would end up taking the match by decision, 7-6. Immediately following, Keilan Torres picked up a win of his own, this time with bonus points. Torres took multiple committed shots throughout the match, and was able to continuously run through Humphereys to earn an eight-point win. Three takedowns in the first period alone put him up 6-2, and another two, along with an escape and the riding time advantage, gave hisTorres the 12-4 major decision, tacking on four team points for the Bears. Tanner Davis picked up his second dual win of the season, notching a 3-1 decision over Will Sumner to keep the Bears within five points of Utah Valley overall. Davis managed to hold Sumner down for 1:30 of the second period before giving up the escape, and picked up a huge reversal just ten seconds into the final period to give himself a 2-1 lead. Holding on the remainder of the match, he had more than enough riding time for the advantage point to make it 3-1. At the close of his match, the Bears were only down 18-13 in the dual, giving the Bears one last shot at the win. Redshirt senior Trent Noon took the mat for the final match of the night, and he wasted no time in going out for the win. It took him only 16 seconds to pick up a takedown, and just another 30 to add a four-point nearfall. Working hard for the fall, it was just ten seconds later that the official would slap the mat, giving Noon the pin for six team points, and the Bears their first Big 12 dual win of the season. "This is how we expect Trent to wrestle every time he goes out there. It's believing that he can go out there and do that every time because that's what champions do." The Bears are at home next Wednesday, Feb. 17, for their final dual of the season. UNC will host Air Force for a 7:00pm dual that will also serve as Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day. For more information on the Bears this season, check out UNCBears.com, visit their official Facebook page, and follow them on Twitter at @UNCBearsWrestle. Franklin improved to 28-5 on the year, earning his seventh pin of the season. Chris Castillo closed the gap for the Broncos with a 3-2 victory against AJ Fierro at 157. Adam Fierro recorded a hard fought 8-5 victory over Taylor West in the 165-pound match. Dylan Bollinger wrapped up the night with his fifth pin of the season when he stuck Zach Coffman at 3:40 of the 184-pound match. “We wrestled great tonight,” said CSUB head coach Mike Mendoza. “The bonus points from the pins was great to see. “We are definitely going in the right direction. There is another level that this team is capable of hitting.” The 11 dual victories this season for CSUB (11-3) are the most for the program since the 2004-05 campaign when the Roadrunners went 13-7. 13. HAVRE, Montana -- The second-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team defeated Montana State Northern, 51-0, on Friday night inside of a record crowd in Havre, Montana. The Hawkeyes piled up bonus points in eight matches and recorded six pins to pitch their second straight shutout and improve to 16-0. "There is excitement even when it's lopsided and tonight was a good environment," said UI head coach Tom Brands. "The biggest thing is our best wrestling needs to come out whether it's in the national finals or Havre, Montana. There are a lot of good reasons for coming up here." Junior Thomas Gilman opened the dual with a pin in 2:31. His eighth fall of the season matched a team-high for all of 90 minutes before Sam Stoll regained sole possession of the pin title with his ninth fall, decking Toby Cheff in 1:56. Cory Clark, Brandon Sorensen, Edwin Cooper, Jr., and Sammy Brooks picked up falls in between the 125 and 285-pound bookends. Iowa also got bonus points from Patrick Rhoads' 26-11 technical fall at 165, and Brody Grothus' 13-3 major decision at 141. The Northern Lights held Iowa to decisions at 174 and 197. Alex Meyer erased a 6-0 deficit to win 11-9, and Nathan Burak cruised to an 8-3 win to give Iowa a 45-0 lead. Stoll's pin at 285 put Iowa over the 50-point mark for the fourth time this year, more than any other team since the 1990-91 Hawkeyes did it six times. Iowa returns to the mat Monday, Feb. 22, to host the National Championships Dual Series. The Hawkeyes' opponent will be announced Feb. 14. The dual starts at 7 p.m. (CT). 14. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The 7th-ranked Ohio State wrestling team celebrated Senior Night in the best way possible - with a convincing 34-6 victory over Wisconsin in front of a season-high crowd of 5,650. The Buckeyes won eight of 10 matches, highlighted by a technical fall from Kyle Snyder, a dual-closing pin from Jake Ryan and an overtime triumph from one of the nine seniors honored before the match - Kenny Courts. The dual started at 165 pounds with one of the feature matches of the night - No. 2 Bo Jordan vs. No. 3 Isaac Jordan. In a remark of the Big Ten championship match from last season, I. Jordan jumped out to an early lead and hung on to end B. Jordan's unbeaten streak this year, 6-4. Ohio State managed to take the next seven matches, however, as No. 15 Myles Martin started the run with a major decision at 174 pounds, 12-1 over Ricky Robertson. Courts then followed that up with a 6-4 overtime triumph against Ryan Christensen in which he scored the winning takedown early in the sudden victory period. Mark Martin made his return to the lineup at 197 pounds and didn't disappoint, topping Eric Peissig, 6-3. From there, Snyder did what Snyder does - he scored points early and often in a 26-11 technical fall that have Ohio State a 15-3 lead at intermission. Following the break, Nathan Tomasello remained unbeaten (17-0) as he earned a 20-5 tech fall over Johnny Jimenez. Johnni DiJulius made his final Big Ten match in St. John Arena a convincing 10-2 major decision over Jens Lantz that extended the Buckeye lead to 24-3. Micah Jordan won his 19th match of the year, 10-1 over Gabe Grahek, and then the dual was topped off by Ryan's pin at 157 lbs. over TJ Ruschell that came in 3:36. Ohio State finishes the regular season at 7-2 in the Big Ten and has accumulated 15 conference wins over the past two seasons, the most of any two-year period in program history. Ohio State has won regular season dual left, a date in the NWCA National Championship Dual against an opponent to be announced on Sunday, Feb. 14. 15. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- No. 14 Rutgers wrestling returned to form Friday night at University Gym, where the Scarlet Knights took eight of 10 bouts and four by bonus points in a 30-9 win over Indiana. Rutgers (14-5, 4-4) began and ended the day with major decisions, and got a six-point boost on a first period fall from No. 13 Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) at heavyweight. The dual win snapped a two-match Rutgers losing skid. "We were excited to get on the road and get back to our winning ways," said head coach Scott Goodale. "Any win in the Big Ten is a good win. Now we're moving on to Sunday." The dual started at 165 pounds, where No. 8 Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) shut out Bryce Martin, 10-0. Perrotti improves to 18-3 on the season and 7-1 in Big Ten duals. Indiana's (6-6, 3-9) No. 11 Nate Jackson eked out a win against Phillip Bakuckas (Hammonton, N.J.), 6-5, at 174 pounds after a thrilling third period. Bakuckas lifted Jackson to a single leg and converted the takedown going out of bounds with 20 seconds remaining. The two points tied the match, 5-5, but Jackson escaped with one tick left on the clock. A match later Nicholas Gravina (Allendale, N.J.) swung three team points Rutgers' way with a gutsy 4-3 win against Matt Irick. Gravina is now 17-6 overall. The most thrilling win of the night for Rutgers came at 197 pounds. Hayden Hrymack (Point Pleasant, N.J.) faced a 4-1 deficit as the third period began, but the RU veteran got a two-point turn, pressured the full two minutes, and was rewarded a stall point from Jake Masengale as time expired. With the score tied, 4-4, Hrymack (14-9) got to a single and tripped Masengale to the mat for the 6-4 sudden victory win. "It was important. Winning the third period, doing it on top, turning people - that was the difference," Goodale said. "He rode and then he gutted it out in overtime, where he felt it. When you win those tight matches in overtime like that, that means you're in great shape, you're in condition, you feel it, and there's confidence there. Hopefully he carries that into Sunday." Smith (21-6) inched closer to the century mark for his career with a fall in 2:03 against Fletcher Miller. The High Point HS product now owns 95 wins in a Rutgers singlet with plenty more to wrestle for. RU's only other loss of the night came a match later at the hands of No. 19 125-poounder Elijah Oliver. Oliver pinned Josh Patrick (Rector, Pa.) in 2:56 to reverse the six points from a match prior and make the dual, 16-9. But Scarlet Knights quickly shut the door on a Hoosier comeback, taking four-straight to close it out. No. 19 Anthony Giraldo (Guttenberg, N.J.) scored a takedown late to close out a 12-3 major decision and jump to 15-10. Nicholas Ottaviano (Marlboro, N.J.) wrestled in place of No. 5 Anthony Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.) at 141 pounds and scored his first-career Big Ten win, 8-3. The dual match was just his second this season. "When you try to get kids matches and rest your starters you want guys to step in and perform well, and he did that," Goodale said. "Good for him. He's been in there battling every day in the practice room taking a lot of lumps. For him to get a Big Ten win, great for Nick Ottaviano." Following a 6-2 decision at 149 pounds from Tyson Dippery (Harrisburg, Pa.), No. 12 Richie Lewis (Toms River, N.J.) stayed hot with a 13-4 major decision against Jake Danishek. Lewis is the third Scarlet Knight after Ashnault and Smith to reach 20 wins this season and is 20-3 overall. Rutgers wraps up its Big Ten schedule Sunday at noon against No. 23 Purdue (8-6, 3-5). The Scarlet Knights make their first appearance on Big Ten Network this season and can finish above .500 in conference with a win. 16. STILLWATER -- The fourth-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team won its ninth-consecutive dual Friday, defeating Army in dominating fashion, 36-3. The Cowboys (11-2, 6-0 Big 12) won nine of the dual's 10 matches, with four of those resulting in bonus points (two pins, one tech fall, one major decision). “We're trying to build momentum,” OSU head coach John Smith said. “I think we look at this particular dual and see we scored a lot of points, but we also need to recognize it does get a lot tougher as we move through the end of the season.” The dual began at 125 pounds, where No. 6 Eddie Klimara picked up his 99th career victory in a dominant 15-0 technical fall over Jacob Fontanez. Klimara jumped in front early with a quick takedown and three two-point nearfalls to take an 8-0 lead at the end of the first period. In the second, Klimara quickly escaped, took down Fontanez and scored a four-point nearfall to secure the tech fall (3:58). “I'm just trying to get the guys fired up. If I go out there and start slow, it's a threat for other guys to go slow so I'm just going out there to wrestle hard and motivate the team,” Klimara said after his tech fall victory. Coming off of matchups with No. 1 and No. 4 at 133 pounds, Gary Wayne Harding used four takedowns and nearly four minutes of riding time to secure 10-3 victory, putting the Pokes up 8-0 in the match. Top-ranked Dean Heil defeated Army's Logan Everett, 7-2, at 141-pounds to improve to 22-0 this season. No. 13 Anthony Collica scored six takedowns in his matchup with Mark Marchetti before sticking the Black Knight at 6:05. Collica's second-straight win by fall brings his season win total to 20. “We were all stunned,” Smith said of his 149-pounder's victory. “It was a move we haven't seen all year from him or coached him to do. We like to see him being creative and putting extra points on the board.” The Cowboys suffered their lone loss of the dual at 157 pounds as Ryan Blees, making his second dual start of the season, fell to Russell Parsons, 10-4. In the next match, two-time national champion Alex Dieringer continued to assert his dominance on the 165-pound division as he extended his winning streak to 71 consecutive matches. With under five seconds remaining in the match, Dieringer recorded his fifth takedown and then pinned Andrew Mendel's shoulders to the mat with just one second remaining. The fall is Dieringer's ninth of the season and 22nd win that resulted in bonus points for the Cowboys. “I'm always going for bonus points,” Dieringer said. “It was a sloppy match, but I've got to move past it and get ready for Stanford. At 174, Chandler Rogers stepped into the lineup once again, this time picking up the victory over No. 18 Brian Harvey, 11-8, in a hard-fought match. Rogers' officially clinched the match for the Cowboys as they lead the Black Knights 26-3. After knocking off the nation's top-ranked 184-pounder last week, No. 14 Nolan Boyd nearly picked up bonus points again as he defeated Samson Imonode 10-3. Preston Weigel won a thrilling match against Army's Bryce Barnes. Barnes took down Weigel with three seconds remaining in the match, but it wasn't enough as the Cowboy had locked up the riding time point to win, 10-8. In the dual's final matchup, No. 5 Austin Marsden won OSU's ninth match of the night and extended his own winning streak to 14 straight as he knocked off Trevor Smith, 12-3. OSU wraps up its Valentine's weekend competition against Stanford on Sunday at 2 p.m. inside Gallagher-Iba Arena. 17. ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team closed out its Big Ten Conference dual season with a lopsided 30-11 win against No. 23 Purdue on Friday evening (Feb. 12) in front of 1,168 fans at Cliff Keen Arena. The Wolverines, who earned six bonus wins tonight, wrapped their Big Ten slate with an 8-1 record -- their best conference mark in 10 years. The teams traded nothing but major decisions through the opening five bouts with Michigan claiming wins at 125, 133 and 149 pounds to build a 12-8 lead at the intermission break. Senior/junior Conor Youtsey, ranked 20th in the latest InterMat poll at 125 pounds, set the early tone, cruising to an 11-3 major decision against Luke Schroeder at the opening weight. He scored on two first-period takedowns -- early and late in the frame -- and added three more, including two in the third period. He rode out the bout after his last score late, accumulating 3:34 in time advantage. Senior Rossi Bruno, one of five Wolverine seniors honored before the dual, followed with a similarly decisive win against Luke Welch at 133 pounds, using a big third period to earn a 10-1 major decision. After a scoreless first period, Bruno, ranked 18th nationally, surged ahead with an escape and takedown in the second before combining a single-leg takedown with a four-point cradle midway through the third. He added a point for 1:53 riding-time advantage. After a Purdue win at 141 pounds, sixth-ranked sophomore Alec Pantaleo secured another Wolverine major decision with a 12-2 rout over Jeremy Golding at 149 pounds. Pantaleo scored on four takedowns, including three in the third period, added an escape and a couple stall points and accumulated 2:44 in riding-time advantage. The Wolverines claimed each of the final four bouts but nearly started the streak earlier at 165 pounds, where sophomore Garrett Sutton lost a 7-6 heartbreaker on a last-second reversal by seventh-ranked Chad Welch. Senior/junior Aaron Calderon was victorious in his Keen Arena debut, winning 8-3 against Kirk Johnson at 174 pounds to get the Wolverines back on track. Calderon, who has bumped up two weights from 157, scored on three takedowns -- one in each period -- and rode for 1:13. The Wolverines' upperweight gauntlet of junior Domenic Abounader, graduate student Max Huntley and junior Adam Coon all secured bonus points to close out the dual win. Abounader, ranked second nationally at 184 pounds, settled for an 11-2 major decision against Tanner Lynde, struggling to turn the Boilermaker and instead using four takedowns and 4:23 riding-time advantage -- largely from a third-period rideout -- to control from start to finish. Huntley, ranked sixth, cruised to a 16-1 technical against Drake Stein at 197 pounds after building a sizable early lead on a quick single-leg takedown and eight back points. He added two more single legs, including one to end the bout at the 5:20 mark. Coon, ranked fourth, was leading 2-1 early in his heavyweight bout against Tyrel Kral when the two wrestlers knocked their heads together and Kral could not continue, giving Coon the win by injury default at 2:18. Coon improved to 15-0 on the season. The Wolverines' other two upperweight captains are a perfect 14-0 in duals. Results: 125 -- #20 Conor Youtsey (U-M) major dec. 18. BROOKINGS, S.D. -- It was a night for records at Frost Arena as the South Dakota State University wrestling team moved its dual winning streak to a school-record 12 with an 18-15 victory over West Virginia on Friday night before the largest crowd in the program's Division I history. With the win, the 24th-ranked Jackrabbits improved to 13-5 overall and 5-1 against Big 12 Conference opponents. West Virginia dropped to 6-9 overall and 0-3 against Big 12 foes. The dual, which was SDSU's first since cracking the Division I top 25 for the first time, was witnessed by 1,016 fans. After West Virginia opened the dual with a pair of victories by decision at heavyweight and 125 pounds, Brance Simms put the Jackrabbits on the board with an 8-4 decision over Cory Stainbrook in the 133-pound bout. The two wrestlers were tied at four through two periods before Simms recorded an escape and takedown midway through the final period, adding a final point with a riding-time advantage of 1 minute and 42 seconds. Seth Gross gave SDSU a 7-6 lead with a 13-1 major decision over Tony DeAngelo in which he built an 8-0 first-period lead that included a four-point near-fall and two-point near-fall as the period expired. Alex Kocer followed with another bonus-point victory for the Jackrabbits at 149 pounds, notching a 20-2 technical fall over Zachary Moore. It was the 20th win of the season for Kocer. The first battle of the night between two ranked wrestlers pitted sixth-ranked Cody Pack of SDSU against 17th-ranked Dylan Cottrell at 157 pounds. A Cottrell takedown and Pack reversal late in the third period, coupled with Cottrell's minute-plus advantage in riding time sent the match to overtime tied at five. Pack scored a takedown 20 seconds into the extra session and added four-point near-fall to close out the match. The Pack victory pushed the Jackrabbit advantage to 15-6. In winning his final home match, Pack moved into a tie for eighth place on the Jackrabbit career wins list with Mike Pankratz. Pankratz compiled a 108-27-2 record from 1990-94, while Pack improved to 108-33. West Virginia's Connor Flynn ended the Jackrabbit string of wins at four with a 7-2 decision over Luke Zilverberg at 165 pounds. SDSU prevailed in another closely contested match at 174 pounds as David Kocer recorded a come-from-behind victory. Kocer trailed Ross Renzi, 4-1, heading into the third period, but tied the match with an escape and takedown. Renzi managed an escape with under a minute to go, but a stalling point was awarded to Kocer, who then added a takedown to pull out a 7-5 win. The win was the team-leading 25th of the season for Kocer, who entered the match ranked 30th in the latest NCAA coaches' panel rankings. The Mountaineers won each of the last two matches, but failed to pick up any bonus points. Bubba Scheffel downed Brady Ayers, 6-3, at 184 pounds, while 9th-ranked Jacob Smith outlasted 12th-ranked Nate Rotert, 5-4, in the 197-pound weight class. SDSU will attempt to add to its record streak Sunday afternoon at seventh-ranked Oklahoma. The dual is slated for a 2 p.m. start and will be televised on Fox Sports Southwest and Fox College Sports Central. Results: 285: A.J. Vizcarrondo (WVU) dec. 19. LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- Aaron McKinney (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) picked up his 100th career win to energize the home crowd early and Brad Emerick (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) returned to the lineup with the match on the line, and sealed a historic victory for the Lock Haven University wrestling team as the Bald Eagles outlasted Michigan State, 18-15 in a thriller. Prior to the match, LHU head coach Scott Moore and the Bald Eagles honored their seniors, who were competing in front of the home crowd for one final time. Those seniors took full advantage and shined brightest, leading the Bald Eagles (8-9) to the program's first-ever win over Michigan State. The win also marked LHU's first win over a Big Ten opponent since Lock Haven beat Penn State in 2002. The Bald Eagles beat Rutgers back in 2007, but at the time, the Scarlet Knights were still a member of the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA). Lock Haven and Michigan State (1-13) each won five bouts on the night and McKinney was one of four Bald Eagle seniors to claim victory. 20. BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- No. 1 Penn State (14-0, 8-0 B1G) handled No. 14 Lehigh on Friday night in a crucial non-conference dual meet. The Nittany Lions won seven of ten bouts to win 28-9 in front nearly 6,000 fans in Lehigh's sold out Stabler Arena. Penn State sent a line-up featuring six underclassmen, two sophomores and four red-shirt freshmen, into action. The dual was wrestled in front of 5,909 fans, only the second-ever sell-out in Stabler Arena (the last was in 2005) and a new Lehigh record. The dual began at 125 where senior Nico Megaludis (Murrysville, Pa.), ranked No. 4, handled No. 13 Darian Cruz with a 7-1 decision to give Penn State an early lead. Senior Jordan Conaway (Abbottstown, Pa.), ranked No. 5 at 133, then took care of Mason Beckman, posting an 8-2 win to give the Nittany Lions a 6-0 lead. Junior Jimmy Gulibon (Latrobe, Pa.), ranked No. 14 at 141, dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 18 Randy Cruz with the Mountain Hawks picking up their first win. . Sophomore Zain Retherford (Benton, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 149, then posted a strong 8-0 major over Laike Gardner. Red-shirt freshman Jason Nolf (Yatesboro, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 157, then turned a first period takedown into quickly shoulder control and a fall over Lehigh's Ian Brown. Nolf's pin, at the 1:22 mark, was his 11th of the year and sent Penn State into intermission with a 16-3 lead. Red-shirt freshman Shakur Rasheed (Coram, N.Y.), ranked No. 17 at 165, held off a late rally by Drew Longo to post a wild 10-8 win. Red-shirt freshman Bo Nickal (Allen, Texas), ranked No. 1 at 174, then handled Gordon Wolf, posting a 14-6 major decision with 2:28 in riding time to put the Nittany Lions up 23-3. Sophomore Matt McCutcheon (Apollo, Pa.), ranked No. 6 at 184, dropped a tough 6-0 decision to No. 3 Nate Brown. Senior Morgan McIntosh (Santa Ana, Calif.), ranked No. 1 at 197, rolled over No. 17 John Bolich, posting a 16-0 technical fall at the 4:17 mark. Red-shirt freshman Nick Nevills (Clovis, Calif.) stepped on to the mat in a Penn State singlet for the first time at 285 in the dual, making a return after what was thought to be a season-ending injury during the preseason. Nevills took an early lead on No. 14 Max Wessell but was hit with an illegal hold call while trying to turn the Hawk wrestler. Penn State immediately challenged the call but after a lengthy review it was upheld. The challenged call would be crucial as Wessell used the penalty point to post a 5-4 win. Seven Penn State wins, however, allowed the Lions to roll to a 28-9 victory and remain unbeaten on the year. The Nittany Lions are now 14-0, 8-0 in the Big Ten, while Lehigh falls to 12-2. Penn State posted a lop-sided 17-8 takedown advantage as well. The Nittany Lions won seven of ten bouts, picking up seven bonus points off a pin (Nolf), a tech fall (McIntosh) and two majors (Retherford and Nickal). Penn State will return home for a date with Michigan State in Rec Hall tomorrow night, Saturday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. The Lions have a chance claim a share of the Big Ten Regular Season Championship (sharing with Iowa) with a win over Michigan State. With the remaining Rec Hall duals already at seated capacity, a limited number of Standing Room Only tickets (SROs) can be purchased for each. Rec Hall SROs may only be purchased by calling 1-800-NITTANY and are $15 per person. Nico worked the first minute-plus, looking to get Cruz's head to the mat in order to work his way around for a takedown. The Mountain Hawk was able to keep Megaludis at arm's length for the period, stepping back towards the outside circle until Megaludis worked head control into a takedown at the :35 mark. The Lion senior controlled Cruz for a ride out and a 2-0 lead after one period. Megaludis chose down to start the second period, Cruz got hit for locked hands, and Megaludis escaped to a 4-0 lead right away. The Lion then worked his way into a low single, forcing a scramble on the outside circle. Megaludis was not able to finish off the move and a reset was called at the :40 mark. Trailing 4-0, Cruz chose down to start the third period but the Lion senior controlled the Mountain Hawk long enough to work his riding time edge over 1:00. Cruz escaped to a 4-1 score at the 1:15 mark but Megaludis continued to pressure him, forcing a first stall. He got a takedown at the :10 mark and, with 1:25 in riding time, posted the 7-1 win. 133: Senior Jordan Conaway (Abbottstown, Pa.), ranked No. 5 at 133, faced Mason Beckman, a two-time All-American. The duo of returning All-Americans battled evenly until Conaway blew through a fast shot to take a 2-0 lead the 1:03 mark. Conaway was hit for stalling on the ride as a reset was called with :36. With Beckman working to his knees, Conaway broke the Mountain Hawk down one more time and rode him out for a 5-1 lead after two periods. Beckman chose down to start the third period and Conaway continued to control action from the top position. Conaway clinched the riding time point, controlling Beckman until the 1:12 mark. Leading 5-2 after the Beckman escape, Conaway worked for another takedown, setting up another takedown with a single leg at the :10 mark. With 3:00 in time, Conaway posted the 8-2 win. 141: Junior Jimmy Gulibon (Latrobe, Pa.), ranked No. 14 at 141, faced off against No. 18 Randy Cruz. Gulibon forced a scramble with a head-outside single, nearly taking Cruz down in the center of the mat before the official called a quick stalemate with 2:10 on the clock. Gulibon fought off one Cruz shot and the bout moved to the second period tied 0-0. Gulibon chose down to start the second period and quickly got to his feet. A stalemate was called quickly though with Cruz hanging on to Gulibon's head and neck. A repeat of the former happened off the reset and with 1:29 on the clock, Gulibon stood again, then tried to slide out of Cruz's control. The Mountain Hawk nearly turned Gulibon for back points but the Lion scrambled his way out of trouble. Still, Cruz was able to hang on to Gulibon without getting a stall warning and rode the Lion out. Tied 0-0 but with 2:00 in time to his favor, Cruz chose down to start the third period. Cruz escaped quickly to a 1-0 lead. Gulibon quickly took Cruz down, working for two. The takedown was not awarded and Cruz countered the shot for the bout's first takedown to open up a 3-0 lead. With the riding time point for Cruz clinched, the Mountain Hawk rode Gulibon out and posted the 4-0 win. 149: Sophomore Zain Retherford (Benton, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 149, battled Laike Gardner. Retherford patiently waited for an opening and found it with a high double to lead 2-0 at the 1:39 mark. He then quickly gained control of Gardner's shoulders, setting up a chance to turn him. Gardner called for injury time but the official did not see it and called a stalemate instead. A reset ensued with Retherford still in control and the Lion rode Gardner out. Leading 2-0, Retherford chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 3-0 lead. Retherford forced Gardner into backing up for the next minute, then got in on a low single which he turned into another takedown and a 5-0 lead with :42 left in the period. Retherford maintained control for the rest of the period and carried that lead, with 2:19 in time, into the second period. Gardner chose neutral to start the third period and Retherford blew through a low double, forcing a wild scramble in front of the Lehigh bench that lasted nearly 1:00 but resulted in a stalemate with :46 on the clock. Retherford tripped Gardner to the mat with a low shot and picked up a final takedown to post an 8-0 major with 2:35 in riding time. 157: Red-shirt freshman Jason Nolf (Yatesboro, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 157, wrestled Ian Brown. Shakur quickly shot low on Longo, turning a low double into a scramble that Long appeared to work his way out of. Rasheed continued to press, regaining control of both Longo ankles but the Mountain Hawk was able to force a stalemate. Rasheed was undaunted, however, getting the takedown with 1:22 on the clock for a 2-0 lead. Rasheed maintained offensive control for over a minute, then reset himself, breaking Longo down and picking up a point on a second Longo stall. Leading 3-0, Rasheed chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 4-0 lead. He quickly turned in on Longo, forcing another scramble and once again, Longo was able to work his way to a stalemate with 1:30 on the clock. Rasheed's offensive pressure forced Longo into another stall. He then worked his way into another low single that Longo fought off until a stalemate at the :08 mark. Trailing 5-0, Longo chose neutral to start the third period and quickly took the Lion down to cut the lead to 5-2. He cut Rasheed loose and took him down to a 6-4 score. Rasheed countered a Longo shot, forcing a scramble that ended in a takedown and a 7-6 Rasheed lead. Rasheed the reversed Longo to up his lead to 9-6, Longo reversed Rasheed and the Lion escaped to a 10-8 score with :15 left. Wolf was able to belly out and stay off his back. After a Wolf escape, Nickal used an ankle pick to take Wolf down. He then worked his way into a near cradle, turning Wolf for two back points. Leading 8-3 with over 2:00 in riding time, Nickal chose down to start the third period. HE quickly escaped and then took Wolf down to lead 11-3 with 1:20 on the clock. He locked up a cradle for two near fall points and led 13-4 after a Wolf escape. Wolf took Nickal down late for a final score but 2:28 in riding time gave Nickal a 14-6 major. 184: Sophomore Matt McCutcheon (Apollo, Pa.), ranked No. 6 at 184, took on No. 3 Nate Brown in one of the dual's most anticipated match-ups. The duo battled evenly for over 2:00 with neither wrestler breaking through on offense. The bout moved into the second stanza scoreless and Brown chose down. Brown worked his way to a quick escape and the Mountain Hawk led 1-0. Brown scored on a fast single leg and led 3-0 with 1:20 on the clock. McCutcheon was unable to break free of Brown's control for the remainder of the period and trailed 3-0 heading into the third period. McCutcheon chose neutral to start the third period. Brown took a high single that McCutcheon nearly countered, but Brown was able to finish off the move to up his lead to 5-0 with a clinched riding time point. McIntosh then used his bow and arrow to turn Bolich for four near fall points and a 6-0 lead. He reset and turned him one more time to lead 10-0 after one period. McIntosh chose down to start the second period and steadily worked his way to a reversal and a 12-0 lead. He maintained control of Bolich, then turned him for four more back points to end the match with a 16-0 technical fall at the 4:17 mark. 285: Red-shirt freshman Nick Nevills (Clovis, Calif.) stepped on to the mat in a Penn State singlet for the first time in the dual, making a return after what was thought to be a season-ending injury during the preseason. With control of Wessell's legs, Nevills spent the next minute working to turn the ranked Hawk for back points. Nevills was hit with an illegal hold at the 1:21 mark and Penn State asked for a video review on the call. The call stood and Nevills led 2-1. Wessell escaped off the reset to a 2-2 tie with 1:10 on the clock. Wessell chose down to start the second period and escaped to a 3-2 lead, but Nevills had 1:17 in riding time. Nevills stepped back from a Wessell shot, dove low for a single and nearly connected, but Wessell was able to slide away to keep his 3-2 lead. BUFFALO, NY -- The University at Buffalo wrestling team won its first four matches of the day to set the tone in a 24-12 non-conference victory over Binghamton at Alumni Arena on Friday afternoon. The Bulls improved to 9-8 on the season, their most wins since the 2011 campaign. "That was a good win for us over an instate rival. They had beaten us the last couple of years," head coach John Stutzman said. "Whenever you're building a program, every win is big and I think this is extra special because it's an instate rival." Kyle Akins got things off to a great start by pinning Steven Bulzomi at the 4:17 mark. It was his team-best fourth pin of the season and improved the redshirt-freshman's record to 16-9 on the year. Bryan Lantry followed up with a dominant 9-3 decision over Jacob Nicholas to extend the UB lead to 9-0. It was Lantry's 16th win of the season. Brandon Lapi held off Dylan Caruana for 2-0 decision, which included a point for riding time, to extend the UB lead to 12-0. Lapi improved to 13-13 on the season. Colt Cotten earned the Bulls second pin of the day when he took down Jesse Dellavecchia just 2:32 into his match. It was Cotten's ninth win and first pin of the season. Binghamton climbed back into the dual by winning the next four matches and cut the UB lead to 18-12. However, James Benjamin quieted the Bearcat threat when he earned a 4-0 decision over Mark Tracy. Benjamin evened his record at 13-13 on the season. The final match of the day went to Jake Gunning as the redshirt-freshman defeated Connor Caulkins, 5-3, for his 15th win of the year. UB will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when it hosts Northern Illinois at Alumni Arena at 1 pm.
