  5. The last week of competition in the Big 12 had some entertaining duals, capping off with Oklahoma State battling with Iowa. Iowa State and Missouri had an entertaining finish to the season, with both teams getting upsets and the Cyclones coming out on top. South Dakota State kept the Border Bell for the fourth consecutive matchup over North Dakota State. Northern Iowa completed a historic season, getting their most wins since 1988 with 14. Notable Results: Friday (2/21): Full Results Northern Iowa over Wisconsin (27-9) 165: Cody Goebel Dec. #20 Jack Thomsen (9-3) Lehigh over Arizona State (25-11) 141: Emilio Ysaguirre Dec. #29 Carter Bailey (4-1) 149: Pierson Manville Dec. #26 Malyke Hines (5-3) 285: #6 Owen Trephan Dec. #5 Cohlton Schultz (4-2) ASU is another Big 12 team that has struggled with injuries but had some bright spots here. Since returning to the lineup Ysaguirre has been competitive with ranked opponents and came through with a win here. Manville has stepped up the past three duals and got a ranked win here as a true freshman. Schultz suffered a small upset, with a big takedown from Trephan coming in the second to win. California Baptist over CSU Bakersfield (30-11) 141: Eli Griffin Maj. Hayden Zinkin (8-0) Not a ranked result but positive to see Griffin return to the lineup, as he hasn’t competed since Midlands. He’s another interesting piece in a stacked Big 12 weight class. Saturday (2/22): Full Results Iowa State over Missouri (21-18) 125: Ethan Perryman Dec. #32 Gage Walker (7-4) 157: J Conway Dec. #11 Cody Chittum (9-3) 174: #1 Keegan O’Toole Fall Cade Schmidt (6:24) 184: #10 Evan Bockman Dec. #9 Colton Hawks (1-0) 285: Seth Nitzel Dec. #26 Daniel Herrera (8-3) Two of the more banged-up teams this season squared off, with the Cyclones getting an upset at 125 and a bonus point win at 133 to pull away. Conway got one of the bigger upsets for the Tigers this season, getting takedowns in the second and third periods plus plenty of riding time for the upset win. O’Toole made his return to the lineup and got a fall, which tied the team score at the time. Hawks also made his return but appeared more hampered, choosing neutral in the third after a Bockman escape that decided the match. Then at heavyweight Seth Nitzel got the nod and avenged a loss from the Cyclone Open over Herrera. The Cyclones had success as well, getting upsets at 125 and 184. At 133, Garrett Grice stepped up in place of Evan Frost and was dominant, putting up 13 points before getting the fall to win OW for the final UFC Fight Pass dual of the year. Sunday (2/23): Full Results Northern Colorado over Air Force (22-21) South Dakota State over North Dakota State (23-10) 125: Ezekiel Witt Dec. #14 Tanner Jordan (3-2) 285: Andrew Blackburn-Frost Dec. #27 Luke Rasmussen (7-5) A late takedown by Witt flipped a November result where Jordan teched him. Similarly, Blackburn-Frost was majored by Rasmussen early in the year but avenged the loss here. West Virginia over Arizona State (24-13) 125: #2 Richie Figueroa Maj. #12 Jett Strickenberger (11-2) While not an upset it is notable as Strickenberger was having a strong case for the top seed with the win over Spratley and undefeated in conference at 125. Figueroa hasn’t seen the same opponents, but the win over Strickenberger could put him in line for the top seed at Big 12’s. Iowa over Oklahoma State (21-16) 184: Angelo Ferrari Dec. #3 Dustin Plott (SV-1 6-3) Every match was big in a dual like this, but it was pretty chalk outside of this upset. The Cowboys got bonus points at 125, 141, and heavyweight compared to the Hawkeyes getting them at 133, 165, and 197. OK State used Rin Sakamoto at 133, who gave up bonus points but had some fun scraps with Ayala. Also of note is Cam Amine, who came in wearing a face mask and appeared to suffer a knee injury as well. Fish had a wild match with Teemer, making a late push with a tough ride late. They’ll head into Big 12’s as heavy favorites with a number of conference contenders.
  6. We’ve made it to the end of the 2024-25 regular season! The dual meet portion of the schedule closed emphatically with Iowa’s win over Oklahoma State. For the second straight season, the Hawkeyes are responsible for Oklahoma State’s only dual loss of the year. That gives Iowa the #2 spot in our final set of dual rankings for the year. Oklahoma State takes the number three slot. The only other significant change in the team's dual rankings was related to Virginia Tech’s win over NC State. NC State drops behind Virginia Tech and one-loss Cornell. Minnesota and Ohio State move up as well. Even with big duals like Iowa/Oklahoma State and Virginia Tech/NC State, there wasn’t a whole lot of movement at the top of the individual rankings. A slight upset from the Hokies 125 lber Eddie Ventresca gave Vince Robinson his first actual loss of the year and led to a bit of shuffling. Troy Spratley moves back up to #3, Ventresca is #4, and Robinson is #5. All three have exchanged wins over each other, so you could order this a couple of different ways. We’re taking the most recent result and working from there. Another top-five loss came at 149 lbs where #8 Ethan Stiles downed #5 Lachlan McNeil. Stiles has been remarkable since moving down from 157. In the last month, he has beaten #5 McNeil, #9 Lamer, #11 Williams, and #15 Abas. I’m not sure I remember a wrestler dropping down midseason and turning in results like this. Also, at 174 lbs, Lorenzo Norman lost to Josh Ogunsanya. It is only the second loss of the year for Norman, so he doesn’t get penalized too much. It also doesn’t make sense based on the rest of the weight class to drop him any lower than fifth, right now. 7. NCAA Regionals Results This weekend, 8 regions of NCAA women’s wrestling programs battled it out for qualifying spots at the National tournament in March. This expanded regional round grew from 6 teams last year to 8 teams this year, with the top 4 competitors at each weight getting the qualifying nod. The NCWWC will be held on March 7-8. Each team could bring 15 wrestlers to Regionals and all are eligible to qualify, so here is a breakdown of how many qualifiers each team had as well as the placers at each weight. NAIA post season works a little more like Men’s NCAAs with each conference having a number of allocated spots at each weight based on rankings and other factors. After conferences, a committee will determine the remaining at-large qualifiers to complete the 210 athlete national tournament. You can see those conference allocations below:
  8. This weekend, high school state tournament season really went into full swing. States like Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa held their much-anticipated season-ending tournaments - along with plenty of others. As these tournaments conclude, it begs the question, "how did my favorite team's recruits fare?" In some smaller states, it's almost a given that your college-bound studs are collecting another state title, while in the power states, with the deepest talent pools, such achievements are not guaranteed. 10. Have we caught our collective breath as a wrestling community? Those Sunday night megaduals are something else! I’d love to see more of that in the future, especially after football season is over. If you missed Oklahoma State against Iowa, it was one of the best dual of the year and it easily lived up to the hype. Many expected the 184 lb bout to play a pivotal role in the team result and that ended up being accurate. The freshman against the senior star is always a good storyline for me. Both Angelo Ferrari and Dustin Plott acquitted themselves well, but a star was born in Ferrari. Or maybe confirmed. Iowa finished the regular season the same way they finished the 2023-24 campaign - by handing Oklahoma State their only dual loss of the year. Tom Brands is now responsible for David Taylor’s first dual loss as the Cowboys head coach. I’m sure Brands heard the rumblings over the last nine months about how Taylor could be building the next dynasty in college wrestling and said “Not so fast.” Here are five takeaways from the candidate for “Dual of the Year.” 1. Angelo Ferrari is ready to go….right now! This is probably obvious to anyone who watched Sunday’s dual, but Angelo Ferrari has proven he can compete with the best wrestlers at 184 lbs in some pretty high-intensity environments. Ferrari’s only loss came to Carter Starocci in Iowa’s dual with Penn State, but it was by a 3-1 final score, which represents Starocci’s only non-bonus point win of the season. On Sunday, he took out returning NCAA runner-up Dustin Plott in sudden victory. The fact that Ferrari got the win was impressive in its own right. Coming into the match, Plott had lost six times over the last two seasons and five of those losses came to 2024 national champion Parker Keckeisen. That being said, I was impressed by the manner in which Ferrari won the match. Plott was down by a point in the third period and proceeded to ride the Hawkeye for the entire third period - gaining a riding time point, in the process, and sending the match to extra time. The mental fortitude and physical toughness to brush yourself off after those two minutes of action and come out as the aggressor in sudden victory is remarkable. Ferrari was able to get to Plott’s legs multiple times in the sudden victory period, before actually finishing for the winning takedown. Obviously, if you're beating someone like Plott and competitive with the four-time national champion, it should mean a potentially high finish for Ferrari at the 2025 NCAA Championships. 2. Even so….staying in redshirt is the way to go. After the Penn State dual, Tom Brands re-iterated that Ferrari would be kept in redshirt, but he needed to keep redshirt freshman Gabe Arnold fresh. Ferrari would use his five dates and they wouldn’t be against “cupcakes.” Despite the temptation of a win over Plott, I think keeping Ferrari in redshirt is the correct course of action for Brands. From a pure roster management standpoint, it makes sense to wrestle Arnold in the postseason and keep Ferrari in redshirt. Should you wrestle Ferrari, you waste a potential postseason appearance for Arnold, who's a great prospect in his own right. Brands gets paid the big bucks to manage egos and get a team full of wrestlers to buy into his vision for the program. Should Arnold get bumped to the bench, in today’s NIL/transfer portal world, it might be difficult to keep him in Iowa City. Regardless of how well Arnold does in the postseason this year, 174 lbs is probably in the cards for him next year. Brands has never been the type to punt success one season for potential wins in the future, but next year could be interesting with what we now know. Penn State will be really good again and for the foreseeable future. But, they do lose Beau Bartlett, Carter Starocci, and Greg Kerkvliet. We’re still not sure what to make from their 125 and 133 lbers. They could be in for a high finish this year or they could miss the podium. All of this is to say that Penn State is more “getable” next year compared to last year or this one. With likely high NCAA finishers like Drake Ayala and Mikey Caliendo as seniors, combined with a redshirt freshman Ferrari in a clear-out 184 lb weight class, Arnold at his best weight - that’s a good tournament team. Looking at Iowa’s lineup, there is no short-time successor to Stephen Buchanan on the roster. Does that mean that Iowa could be a spot for Angelo’s older brother, AJ? If he gets through a school year at CSU Bakersfield without any off-the-mat issues, maybe that’s a possibility. Iowa has brought in multiple high-profile transfers in each of the last two years, so maybe another couple this offseason? 3. Taylor is not afraid of the bold moves During the Nebraska/Purdue match that preceded the dual on the Big Ten Network, Tim Johnson announced that Oklahoma State had weighed in Rin Sakamoto at 133 lbs, in addition to the expected starter Reece Witcraft. I immediately sent a message to one of my chat groups saying “he’s not actually going to throw out Sakamoto for his first folkstyle match in Carver-Hawkeye against the defacto #1 guy in the weight, is he?” Well, he did. At first glance you may not think that a major decision loss would be chalked up as a win for Oklahoma State, but I think in that situation it was. Witcraft is a gamer and has been a valued member of the Oklahoma State team. Former head coach John Smith spoke highly of him in 2022-23, when he made a huge cut to 125 lbs after the Cowboys suddenly had a void at the weight. Even though it probably wasn’t in his best interest and was likely a miserable experience. But Witcraft can be an all-or-nothing guy on the mat. We saw it earlier this season in the Bedlam dual where he was losing, likely to give up bonus points, and tossed Cleveland Belton for a fall. He might have very well silenced the Carver-Hawkeye crowd by pinning Ayala and turning the tide in the dual. At the same time, he could have tried the big move and been put on his back by Ayala and gave up a fall. The latter is probably more likely than the former. If we looked at the statistically probable outcomes for an Ayala/Witcraft match, I think a major decision for Ayala is the most likely result. Maybe followed by a decision, but also a tech or pin. In sending out Sakamoto, Taylor probably reduced the chance of a tech or pin and ended up getting a similar result. Again, it was a bold decision. The easy decision is to just go with the senior and it would be understandable in that environment. Overall, it didn’t impact the result of the dual, but had the 184 lb match flipped - it would have been a decision from the Oklahoma State bench that would have been important, while possibly overlooked. 4. Are we overlooking Dean Hamiti as a title contender? In late December we saw one of the most anticipated matches of the year, as two-time NCAA champion Keegan O’Toole edged Penn State national champion Levi Haines at the Collegiate Duals. It was a meeting between number one and number two, both were undefeated at the time. Some were calling it an NCAA finals preview….and that may very well be the case. Dean Hamiti might have something else to say about it. Hamiti posted an 8-1 decision over Nelson Brands - one he might have been annoyed about as he surrendered an escape to Brands late, which took away a potential major decision. That aside, nobody majors Nelson Brands. He’s just too good at handfighting and holding position. Throughout Brands’ long career at Iowa, he’s only been majored once? Without heading to WrestleStat can anyone name that opponent? Aside from Tony Ramos, I’m not sure if many people would have guessed Devin Kane at the 2021 NCAA Championships. With all due respect to Mr. Kane, based on Brands’ injury history and his results against some of the elite wrestlers of our time, I’d imagine Brands was banged up on some level. Over his career, Brands has lost to Starocci, Aaron Brooks, Mekhi Lewis, Mikey Labriola, and Edmond Ruth and none majored him. Only Brooks came close (14-8). If Hamiti can get through the difficult defense of Brands, how would he fare with O’Toole/Haines? We should see in two weeks as he and O’Toole will likely clash at the Big 12 Championships. They didn’t hit in dual meet competition because O’Toole missed about two months with an injury. An injury also could swing things Hamiti’s way. Their potential matchups will be one of the most anticipated of conference tournament weekend. 5. Is Jacori Teemer slowly regaining his normal form? A takedown off the opening whistle, at 157 lbs against Caleb Fish, made it look like Jacori Teemer was all the way back from a hamstring issue he suffered in November. Teemer had other moments of brilliance in a scramble and with his trademark double leg against Fish. Then Brands had him take down in the third period, while he was possibly on the path to a major decision (he was leading 9-4). In the heat of the moment, I kind of questioned the decision. A wrestler who probably wasn’t fully healthy and in the best condition going underneath a good top wrestler in the third period of an emotionally draining dual meet. It had the recipe for trouble. As I suspected, Fish was very tough on top and rode Teemer for a significant part of the third. He later cut the Hawkeye to try and get points on his feet. All-in-all, Fish was able to get two points from stalling calls in the third. Looking back at this situation, it was probably a necessary evil to put Teemer in that position. One that should help prepare him for the postseason. Some of the elite 157 lbs in the Big Ten are really tough from top. Tyler Kasak, Ethen Miller, Joey Blaze, Tommy Askey. At some point, Teemer will need to get an escape in a key situation against one (or more) of these guys. They obviously won’t care about his conditioning or health. Or maybe they’ll smell blood if there’s any doubt about either. With that rough third period and almost two weeks before the Big Ten Championships, I think we’ll end up seeing the best version of Teemer in a Hawkeye singlet in Evanston.

  12. Hokies head coach Tony Robie speaks with the media after a huge win over rival NC State. With the win, the Hokies clinch a share of the ACC Dual title. Coach Robie talks about some of the standouts from the duals, the team heading into the postseason and more:
  13. What better way to close out the regular season than a Sunday evening clash between the #2 and #3 teams in the country? Throw in the fact that those teams are two of the most storied programs in our sport’s history and heated rivals and we’re in for some fun. There’s an added element to this rivalry in 2024-25 as Olympic gold medalist David Taylor is in his first year leading the Oklahoma State program. Taylor’s addition has provided the Cowboys with a shot in the arm on the recruiting trail, with fan interactions and attendance, and with on-mat performance. The Cowboys come into Sunday’s match with a 13-0 dual record. They boast wins over #4 Northern Iowa, #6 NC State, #9 Virginia Tech, and #11 Iowa State. The eight-point win over Northern Iowa represents Oklahoma State’s closest dual of the season. They come into this dual ranked second in the nation. Taking a back seat to no one is Tom Brands’ Iowa Hawkeyes. The third-ranked Hawkeyes sport a 13-1 record with their only dual loss coming to top-ranked Penn State. They have wins over #5 Nebraska, #7 Minnesota, #8 Ohio State, and #11 Iowa State. Let’s take a look at what we expect to see from both teams weight-by-weight and make some predictions. 125 lbs - #4 Troy Spratley (Oklahoma State) vs. #16 Joey Cruz (Iowa) During the last few weeks, we’ve labeled matches involving Joey Cruz to be “closer than the rankings may indicate.” After a win over Minnesota’s Cooper Flynn on Friday and Northwestern’s Dedrick Navarro on Sunday, Cruz has risen in the rankings so that gap isn’t quite as wide. I still like how he’s competed lately and think that, with a home crowd behind him, he’ll be able to make this clash with Troy Spratley a one-takedown match. Spratley has been excellent throughout the season, finishing third at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and losing just twice in dual competition. Since Spratley’s most recent loss, he’s reeled off three straight wins, the last three of which involved bonus points. Pick: Spratley by decision (3-0 Oklahoma State) 133 lbs - #21 Reece Witcraft (Oklahoma State) vs. #2 Drake Ayala (Iowa) It was an overtime victory from Drake Ayala that helped get the momentum started for an Iowa win in 2024. Ayala is now up at 133 lbs and is expected to get the win and, perhaps more, this time. With top-ranked Ryan Crookham’s status being murky at-best, Ayala is the man to beat at this weight class. He comes in on a 13-match winning streak and has a pair of wins over past All-Americans and six over returning national qualifiers this season. Oklahoma State has bounced between redshirt freshman Cael Hughes and the veteran Reece Witcraft at this weight. Witcraft has the ability to change a match with one move - as he often tries big throws and trips that could quickly rack up points or perhaps a fall. At the same time, he can put himself in danger. That could be a problem with someone as fundamentally sound as Ayala. You have to go back to the 2021-22 season to find a prior match between these two. Both were redshirting, at the time, and Ayala majored Witcraft at the Southern Scuffle down at 125. Normally, a match so long ago would have little relevance, but I do like this match to play out in a similar manner. Pick: Ayala by major decision (4-3 Iowa) 141 lbs - #5 Tagen Jamison (Oklahoma State) vs. Cullan Schriever/Ryder Block (Iowa) This is an important weight for Oklahoma State as we move into the middleweights. In the next three weights, Iowa will be a significant favorite, so at minimum, the Cowboys will need a win; however, bonus points would be preferable. Tagen Jamison is starting to round back into form after ending January with a pair of sudden victory losses (both to opponents from Iowa schools). In his last outing, Jamison got back on the winning track with a solid 8-2 decision over Little Rock’s Brennan Van Hoecke. Jamison is hoping for a better end to the season compared to last year. He had a similar regular season, but was fourth in the Big 12 and went 0-2 at nationals. Iowa still appears to be undecided at 141 lbs. Cullan Schriever got the call in both matches last weekend and went 1-1. He got down big to Vance Vombaur and almost worked his way back into the match. Two days later, he majored Northwestern’s Luis Bazan. He is now 5-9 on the year. Though he’s seen significant time in the Hawkeye lineup over the past three seasons, Schriever has never been the guy for Iowa in the postseason. The Hawkeyes also could use Ryder Block, a top recruit who is 2-4 as a redshirt freshman. Block was expected to compete at 149 lbs, but has moved down to try and solidify this weight. Pick: Jamison by decision (6-4 Oklahoma State) 149 lbs - #18 Carter Young (Oklahoma State) vs. #3 Kyle Parco (Iowa) This is where it could get a little dicey for Oklahoma State. A dual loss to Shayne Van Ness is the only blemish on the record for Kyle Parco. Parco is seeking to earn All-American honors for a fifth time and looking for an elusive national title is the ultimate goal. Since coming to Iowa from Arizona State, Parco has been racking up points like no other time in his career. His top game has been excellent and typically separates him from his opposition. Carter Young is a two-time national qualifier who used the 2023-24 season to take a redshirt. He has returned and been solid, but not spectacular. For the the most part, Young has beaten the guys ranked below or around him, but hasn’t been able to break through and knock off those in Parco’s class. Since the calendar flipped to 2025, Young has been .500 and he comes in after losing three of his last four. In this situation, I can see Young avoiding bonus points, but falling to Parco. Pick: Parco by decision (7-6 Iowa) 157 lbs - #14 Caleb Fish (Oklahoma State) vs. #3 Jacori Teemer (Iowa) For the most part, I think the discussion surrounding Jacori Teemer’s health can be tempered. Teemer took the mat last Friday and grinded out a tough, 4-1 victory over a top-ten opponent in Tommy Askey of Minnesota. It served as Teemer’s best win of the season, thus far. Teemer didn’t take the mat two days later against Northwestern, but that is more out of an abundance of caution and preserving him for this dual, rather than anything injury-related. Like Teemer, Caleb Fish is a senior in his first year with a new team. He was expected to redshirt, but has been pressed into duty at 157 lbs. The change of scenery has been kind to Fish as he has been more consistent than ever in his career. That being said, he’d like to right the ship heading into the postseason after losing two out of his last three duals. One of the high points of Fish’s first season in Stillwater was a third-place finish at a loaded CKLV Invitational. Even when completely healthy, Teemer rarely lights up the scoreboard against opponents of Fish’s caliber. I see this one playing out similarly to the Askey match - close until a late takedown for the Hawkeye. Pick: Teemer by decision (10-6 Iowa) 165 lbs - #6 Cam Amine (Oklahoma State) vs. #2 Michael Caliendo (Iowa) Another new face Oklahoma State has been veteran Cam Amine - a two-time All-American for Michigan. While at Michigan, Amine had the opportunity to meet Michael Caliendo on two occasions in 2023-24. Both came at the 2024 Big Ten Championships and, in both instances, Caliendo was victorious in sudden victory. Caliendo has been as dangerous as ever this year with bonus points in over 72% of his bouts - an increase of more than 20% over last year, when he finished fourth in the country. At the same time, Amine has a knack for slowing down his opponents. Does he do that again on Sunday? After a bit of a rough start to the year, Amine has been excellent from December on, going 11-2 with a pair of top-15 wins sprinkled in. We saw last week that Caliendo was able to open it up against an opponent in Andrew Sparks, who held him in check earlier this season. The result was a 21-5 tech fall. In two years at Iowa, Caliendo has only suffered one loss in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. He’s someone who appears to feed off the energy of the crowd. I don’t know if that will necessarily push him to bonus points against an opponent like Amine, but I think the margin of victory is greater than a single takedown. Pick: Caliendo by decision (13-6 Iowa) 174 lbs - #3 Dean Hamiti (Oklahoma State) vs. #11 Patrick Kennedy/Nelson Brands (Iowa) If Oklahoma State can make it to this point only down by seven points or less, they should be in a very good position to get the “W.” If Parco/Caliendo can get bonus points, or someone else gets an upset, it could spell trouble for the Cowboys. Another new face for Oklahoma State is Dean Hamiti. The two-time All-American has still yet to taste defeat in an OSU singlet. He’s 18-0 with a title at the CKLV and bonus-point wins in more than 3/4 of his appearances. Hamiti has been at his best in some of Oklahoma State’s biggest duals. He teched All-American Lennox Wolak in the win over Virginia Tech. Hamiti did the same to Iowa State’s MJ Gaitan and majored Northern Iowa’s Jared Simma. No matter who Iowa sends out, bonus points may be asking too much for Hamiti. He and Patrick Kennedy met in the 2023 Big Ten finals and Hamiti prevailed, 9-6. Kennedy got the call in Iowa’s win over Minnesota and he responded with an 8-4 win in front of fans from his home state. Two days later, it was Nelson Brands who made a return to the Iowa lineup. After a two-month layoff, Brands responded with a 21-6 tech fall win over Northwestern’s Aiden Vandenbush. Whoever faces Hamiti will have the hands full, but is probably tough enough to avoid surrendering bonus points. Pick: Hamiti by decision (13-9 Iowa) 184 lbs - #3 Dustin Plott (Oklahoma State) vs. #8 Gabe Arnold/Angelo Ferrari (Iowa) Should Dustin Plott wrestle Gabe Arnold, it would be the only rematch from the 2024 edition of this rivalry. In that matchup, Plott controlled the true freshman Arnold in a 5-1 victory. It marked the only loss of Arnold’s impressive redshirt campaign. Plott went on to earn All-American honors for a third time and made his first NCAA finals appearance. Since then, Plott has been as consistent as ever. He’s 15-2 with his only two losses coming to his finals opponent Parker Keckeisen. Iowa could counter with Arnold or true freshman Angelo Ferrari. A win over Northwestern snapped a brief two-match losing streak for Arnold that saw him get knocked off twice in sudden victory. Before those two losses, Arnold won a pair of matches in extra time, one over former club teammate Jaxon Smith and the other against former Big Ten champion and NCAA All-American Edmond Ruth. I’m sure Arnold and the Iowa staff would like to see him be able to open up more offensively and avoid sudden victory; however, Plott may not be the opponent to do it against. Ferrari has one date available to maintain his redshirt status, so he’s definitely in-play here, as well. Brands has utilized Ferrari in two of his biggest duals to date, Iowa State and Penn State, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him against Plott, as well. Ferrari has been excellent for a true freshman with his only loss being a 3-1 decision to four-time national champion Carter Starocci. Pick: Plott by decision (13-12 Iowa) 197 lbs - #6 Luke Surber (Oklahoma State) vs. #1 Stephen Buchanan (Iowa) Assuming the dual starts at 125 lbs, this will be a highly pivotal contest. If the action plays out like we have predicted and Iowa holds a slim lead, Stephen Buchanan could technically put this one out of reach before two-time All-American Wyatt Hendrickson even takes the mat. We’ve seen Buchanan thrive under the bright lights in his first year at Iowa. His pin against Nebraska gave his team a chance to win going into heavyweight and though the team win was locked up against Minnesota, he won a clutch bout against a tough opponent. This time for Buchanan the opposition is a familiar face in Luke Surber. While at Oklahoma last season, Buchanan defeated Luke Surber, 6-2 in the consolation semifinals at the Big 12 Championships. In fairness to Surber, he wasn’t wrestling at the level he is today. Surber has endured a few injury-plagued campaigns to qualify for nationals on three occasions; however, he was never nearly as good as he is today. Surber has only lost once this season and has already avenged that loss. In his last outing, he knocked off 2024 All-American Stephen Little of Little Rock, 5-4. With his confidence likely at an all-time high, Surber isn’t thinking about a close loss for the sake of his team, he’s thinking upset. Pick: Buchanan by decision (16-12 Iowa) 285 lbs - #3 Wyatt Hendrickson (Oklahoma State) vs. #11 Ben Kueter (Iowa) I’m sure fans of both teams would prefer their side winning via blowout, but it would be fun if Iowa holds a four-point lead heading into the final bout with Hendrickson toeing the line against two-sport star Ben Kueter. Hendrickson has been perfect since coming to Oklahoma State and has bonus points in a staggering 88% of his matches. Only top-five opponents like Isaac Trumble and Cohlton Schultz have escaped from a match against Hendrickson without losing via bonus points (and Trumble was pinned by Hendrickson in Vegas). And looking at Hendrickson’s scores, he actually hasn’t won via major decision this season. His bonus points have all come from techs and pins. Basically, he’s like a snowball rolling down a hill - it’s hard to stop that momentum! Should Kueter take the mat with the dual on the line for Iowa, he wouldn’t be in uncharted territory. His major decision over Harley Andrews pushed Iowa past Nebraska. Though it didn’t have team implications, Kueter closed out a win over Ohio State with a nice 5-4 upset over All-American Nick Feldman. This will be one of those rare occasions where Kueter is likely not the most athletic heavyweight in the match. Or at least from a wrestling standpoint. With both of these wrestlers being offensively-minded big men, I expect plenty of points on the board. These two are both very accomplished on the freestyle scene with Kueter owning U20 world gold and silver medals, while Hendrickson is a U23 world champion. Pick: Hendrickson by tech (17-16 Oklahoma State)

  15. We’ve got a huge weekend on tap to finish out the regular season in the ACC. The ACC Dual Championship is on the line and could shake out a few different ways. Right now, the Wolfpack controls their own destiny; as the only undefeated team in the conference, if they beat the Hokies, the dual title goes back to Raleigh. BUT…like I said after week one of ACC duals, it’s going to be a wild year and there is a very real chance that no team makes it through unscathed. Currently, two other teams have one loss in conference - Virginia Tech lost to North Carolina, and UNC lost to NC State. Based on the system the ACC uses, the dual champion is determined only by the final record in the conference, not head-to-head matches. So there is a possibility that the dual title will be shared by two or three teams. Let’s look at the scenarios: NC State beats Virginia Tech. The Wolfpack are the outright dual champs. The result of UNC and Stanford doesn’t matter. Virginia Tech beats NC State and Stanford beats UNC. The Hokies and the Wolfpack share the dual title. VT wins and UNC beats Stanford - it is a three-way tie for the dual title with UNC, VT, and NCST all ending with a 5-1 record in conference. #6 NC State at #9 Virginia Tech 125 - #3 Vincent Robinson v #5 Eddie Ventresca 133 - #14 Kai Orine v #13 Connor McGonagle 141 - Tyler Tracy/Troy Hohman v #10 Sam Latona 149 - #22 Koy Buesgens v #1 Caleb Henson 157 - #15 Ed Scott v #12 Rafael Hipolito 165 - #28 Derek Fields v Mac Church 174 - #22 Matty Singleton v #20 Lennox Wolak 184 - #14 Dylan Fishback v #20 TJ Stewart 197 - #31 Christian Knop v #16 Andy Smith 285 - #4 Isaac Trumble v #13 Jimmy Mullen This dual has been the highlight of the conference for the past decade and Friday’s edition should be no different. In their past 10 head-to-head meetings, they have an even 5-5 split with most duals being decided by 5 points or fewer. The past five duals have been won by the home team, with the last road upset coming in 2019 with the Wolfpack winning the dual title in Blacksburg, 17-16. Based on InterMat rankings, the Hokies are favored in 6 matches to 4 for the Wolfpack. I can’t even point to a single match that I’m most looking forward to, there are incredible matchups up and down the lineup. I fully expect the atmosphere in Cassell to be rowdy tonight. The way I see it, there are five matches that lean more heavily on paper toward one team or the other--141, 149, and 197 for the Hokies and 165 and 285 for the Wolfpack--these can all very much go either direction, but I would call that an upset if it happens. These are the weights where each team will be hunting for critical bonus points. The remaining weights - 125, 133, 157, 174, and 184 - are very much toss-up matches. Let’s look at these toss-ups: 125 We have a top-5 battle and these two have never met. Robinson is 18-1 on the year with his lone loss a medical forfeit at the CKLV. He has a big win over #4 Troy Spratley, who has a win over Ventresca; he has, however, never faced an All-American. The Hokie is a 2023 All-American and comes in at 15-3 with losses to Spratley, #1 Matt Ramos, and a sudden victory loss to #11 Spencer Moore. Expect a wide-open match here. Both have an impressive attack rate and put a lot of points on the board. 133 This will be an important bout. Orine started the season at 141 and dropped back to 133 and he is still adjusting to the weight. He is 11-5 overall, but 3-3 at 133. It has been an adjustment dropping back down, but he has looked better physically every time he’s gone out. McGonagle came into the season with big expectations, but has been limited with injuries. He is 8-1 overall with his lone loss to #19 Tyler Wells and has a big win over #7 Tyler Knox in sudden victory. This match should be pretty wide-open and physical. 157 Ok, I lied. This is the match I’m looking forward to the most. This match could be absolutely bonkers. Both of these guys are capable of some insane technique and big moves and they both have a very unique feel - but in different ways. Scott took out Hipolito in the dual last season 12-7 but Hipolito has made huge jumps in the past year. Scott is a former All-American and two-time bloodround finisher. He comes in at 11-4 on the year with only one questionable loss early in the season. Hipolito is in his first year starting and has a 12-3 with one loss from a medical forfeit and the other two in sudden victory in low-scoring bouts. 174 Lennox Wolak entered the season as a returning All-American at his new home in Blacksburg and a preseason top-5 ranking. He struggled early in the year after an injury and had a disastrous Southern Scuffle that dropped him much lower in the rankings. He has looked much better of late, but has been hard to predict this year. Matty Singleton has been on the edge of breaking through all season and is still looking for a signature win. He is 12-7 on the year, but really doesn’t have any bad losses, they are all to opponents ranked above him. This is an odd match stylistically and could be a 1-0 SV match or a 20-second pin in either direction. Should be a fun one. 184 In the ongoing battles between Virginia Tech and NC State, we have seen some incredible individual rivalries. I think this matchup will go down as another in the long-running series; both are sophomores and are likely to stay at the same weight moving forward. Stewart holds a 2-0 advantage over Fishback, beating him 7-2 in the dual and 8-5 at the ACC Championships last year. Stewart ended the year on the podium with a 7th place finish while Fishback fell in the bloodround. It’s safe to say they are pretty evenly matched. Fishback has had a pretty good year, he is 10-5 with all of his losses coming to top-15 opponents; he has started to look more aggressive offensively lately, which could be helpful or harmful against Stewart. TJ had a very rough start to the year. He was coming off a knee injury and was very tentative early in the year. As he feels more confident, his offense has picked up and he has looked more like the All-American we saw last year. He is 9-7 overall and 4-1 in conference, his lone loss was a pin to Gavin Kane, when he went for a throw that didn’t quite go as planned. I expect a battle here and the dual could very well hinge on this match. #15 North Carolina at #18 Stanford 125 #11 Spencer Moore v FFT 133 #11 Ethan Oakley v #7 Tyler Knox 141 #22 Jayden Scott v #21 Jason Miranda 149 #5 Lachlan McNeil v #15 Jaden Abas 157 #23 Sonny Santiago v #28 Grigor Cholakyan 165 Charlie Darracott v #13 Hunter Garvin 174 #18 Josh Ogunsanya v #4 Lorenzo Norman 184 #19 Gavin Kane v Tye Montiero/Cole Han-Lindemyer 197 Cade Lautt v #15 Nick Stemmet 285 Nolan Neves v #29 Peter Ming Coming into the season we knew that the Tar Heels would have some individual weapons but it didn’t seem like they would have the full lineup strength to contend for the dual title. They proved that wrong in the opening week with an upset win over Virginia Tech. Stanford had a similar vibe, especially giving up a forfeit at 125 every week, but they have shown to be a gritty team as well. This one has the makings of a tight dual and there is a lot on the line for the Tar Heels; they need to win to have a shot at a share of the dual title. Based on rankings, Stanford holds a 6-4 advantage here, but they are giving up 6 to start at 125. There are two key matches I see that can swing this dual in either direction. At 141, both Jayden Scott and Jason Miranda have had flashes of brilliance this season and are coming off of tough losses last week. We should also see the return of Grigor Cholakyan against Sonny Santiago in what could be a very tight match that will have major implications on the overall dual. I am also very interested to see Lachlan McNeil against his toughest test in conference this year in Jaden Abas (McNeil didn’t face Caleb Henson in the opening dual as he was out with an injury). We should also see Lorenzo Norman returning to the lineup after a couple weeks' absence; he has been incredible this year and will have a big match against Josh Ogunsanya. This should be a battle of a dual and will be a fun one to watch. #17 Pittsburgh at Virginia 125 #24 Nick Babin v #31 Keyveon Roller 133 Tyler Chappell v #33 Gable Porter 141 Anthony Santaniello v #19 Dylan Cedeno 149 #23 Finn Solomon v Jack Gioffre/Erik Roggie 157 #21 Dylan Evans v Michael Gioffre/Nick Sanko 165 #33 Jared Keslar v #21 Nick Hamilton 174 #21 Luca Augustine v Rocco Contino 184 #13 Reece Heller/Chase Kranitz v Griffin Gammell 197 #10 Mac Stout v Stephen Burrell/Ethan Weatherspoon 285 #14 Dayton Pitzer v Gabe Christensen Pitt has been consistent and dangerous all season. Their loss to North Carolina on criteria put the Tar Heels in position for a share of the title; that’s how close it has been all conference season. Virginia has been hampered by injuries and illnesses throughout their lineup and are hoping to have a full, healthy lineup for the postseason. I am hopeful that we see a full lineup for the Hoos this week, as they could use some positive momentum and more mat time for the guys who have been out. There are some fun matches to keep your eye on in this dual, starting at 125. Babin and Roller will have major seeding implications for the ACC tournament and both of them want this match. Cedeno is looking to finish the conference season strong for the Hoos, as is Nick Hamilton who will sit toward the top of the seedings at a wide-open 165. The upper weights for the Panthers have been their strength all season, and they are all looking to go out on top. One thing to watch there is whether we see Reece Heller back at 184 - he was out with an injury last week. Also, I think 174 will be a sneaky good match. Augustine has had some huge wins and some tough losses, he is looking to bounce back after getting pinned by Lennox Wolak last week and will have a fresh, and dangerous Rocco Contino who had his first conference match last week since returning from an injury.
  16. Growing up in Michigan, and specifically in Ann Arbor was super fun. I got to experience some of the excitement of being in a big college town, and have the ancillary benefits while growing up and at college age. I ended up going to Central Michigan University and had a great time in Mount Pleasant for the five and a half years that I lived in town. Additionally, I spent plenty of time in East Lansing while visiting friends who were in school at Michigan State. I have had several trips to each campus over the years. There is a general respect between the institutions, and each program has its traditional powers over the years with respect to their athletics. That being said, it’s always fun to have the in-state battles amongst programs. I’ll always remember where I was when CMU football beat MSU football in 2009 (funny enough I was in Ann Arbor at my friend's house who went to MSU). More specific to this site though and wrestling in general, let’s focus on wrestling. It’s been a hot minute since CMU last beat Michigan or Michigan State, but this year seems to be a solid option for them. This Friday, for Senior Night, they’ll host the Spartans at McGuirk Arena. Two seniors, Johnny Lovett (157) and Alex Cramer (174) are both favored in their respective matches and will look to finish in front of their home crowd with a win over Michigan State. 197 will be an interesting match, with MSU having Remy Cotton, who has shown some flashes of greatness this season. His last match was cut short as he suffered a head injury against Jacob Cardenas, and had to withdraw. Hoping he can be back and we can have a good battle near the end of the dual. Sunday CMU travels to Ann Arbor to take on the Wolverines in their last home dual of the season as well. I expect the Crisler Center to be busy for this one, as in-state battles tend to bring out a lot of the local fans. Michigan will also have its Senior Day that night, which will include 10 graduating seniors/grad students. The Wolverines are heavy favorites in this one, but we should still get some fun matches with Johnny Lovett and Chase Saldate at 157. Last year this match was being won by Lovett heading into the third, and Saldate stormed back to win against the usually stingy Lovett. Cramer and Joseph Walker at 174 should also be a fun matchup, as Walker has shown the propensity to slow matches down and pick his spots on offense. Cramer is also comfortable with a slower pace and should be confident against Walker. My prediction is that the Chippewas win at home Friday night, and put up a solid fight on Sunday, while ultimately dropping the dual with the Wolverines. CMU, fresh off officially winning the MAC West with a win this past weekend against SIUE, is looking to round into postseason form after these duals. Similarly, the Wolverines and Spartans have trips to Evanston, Illinois in their future and are looking to finish strong before heading to Philadelphia for NCAAs.
