  4. WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Boosted by bonus points from redshirt freshman Dylan Duncan and redshirt senior No. 2 Isaiah Martinez, the No. 14 Fighting Illini wrestling team defeated No. 24 Purdue, 21-12, on Sunday afternoon at Holloway Gym. The victory improves Illinois' record to 4-3 overall, 3-2 in the Big Ten, while Purdue falls to 5-5, 0-4 in conference action. "I thought we showed some more fight this week," said head coach Jim Heffernan following the victory. "Michael Carr had a good win, [Nate Limmex] has had a really good year. That was one of the bigger matches going into today. Duncan got us off to a good start. Emery [Parker] started a little slow, but Isaiah [Martinez] and Andre [Lee] looked good, and Kyle [Langenderfer found a way to win." Illinois won six of the 10 matches against the Boilermakers on Sunday, including six of the first eight to clinch the victory heading into the final two bouts at heavyweight and 125 pounds. Winning four of the first five matches of the day to lead 15-3 at the dual's intermission, the Illini received seven points from its redshirt freshmen Dylan Duncan and Mike Carr who combined for a total of six minutes, 27 seconds of riding time. Duncan put Illinois on the board first with one of Illinois' two bonus-point victories. Wrestling Devin Schroder, Duncan started fast with two takedowns in the match's opening period to go along with 1:57 of riding time. After a reversal to start the second period, the Lombard, Illinois native tacked on two more takedowns in the third period, building his riding time to 4:30, for a 12-2 major decision. At 141 pounds, Mike Carr continued Illinois' ability to be tough on top, racking up 46 seconds of riding time in the first period after his opening takedown of Purdue's Nate Limmex. After a Limmex takedown and Carr escape created a 3-3 tie, Carr regained the lead with a two-legged takedown in the second period, and then finished off the 141-pound Boilermaker in the third with his fourth takedown of the afternoon to go with 1:57 of total ride time. After Austin Nash scored Purdue's first team points of the dual at 149 pounds, the Illini tallied an 8-0 run by their two redshirt senior starters, Kyle Langenderfer (157) and Isaiah Martinez (165) heading into intermission. A back-and-forth battle for Langenderfer against Cole Wysocki, the two 157-pounders traded the lead seven different times during the match. Using a pair of reversals to negate Wysocki takedowns in both the first and third periods, Langenderfer trailed by just one with under 20 seconds left in the final period. In on the right leg of Wysocki with 13 seconds remaining, Langenderfer worked his way to the match-clinching takedown with seven seconds on the clock, holding on for a 9-8 decision. With the Illini holding a seven point advantage through four bouts, Isaiah Martinez gave the Orange and Blue a commanding 12-point lead heading into the 10-minute break with an 18-3 technical fall of Purdue's Jacob Morrissey. Needing just four minutes, 13 seconds to rack up the 15-point advantage, Martinez used five takedowns and eight back points to earn his fifth tech fall of the season. Now 7-0 on the season, only one wrestler has gone the full seven minutes with the Illinois 165-pounder and are being outscored by a combined 125-41 against the two-time NCAA champion. With the win today, Martinez moved into a four-way tie for 20th place on Illinois' all-time wins list, joining current Illini assistant Mike Poeta and former Illini John Dergo and Kevin Puebla with 105 career wins. Next on the list is Jackson Morse (2010-15) and Jon Llewellyn (1988-91) with 106 wins. Purdue earned its second of four decisions of the dual at 174 pounds coming out of intermission, as No. 12 Dylan Lydy won by a score of 10-3 over Illini true freshman David Riojas. With the lead trimmed back to nine points, 15-6, No. 6 Emery Parker (184) and Andre Lee (197) clinched the dual for the Orange and Blue with a pair of decisions. Parker used three takedowns, plus Illinois' third riding time point, en route to an 8-4 decision over Max Lyon. Andre Lee finished Purdue off with two takedowns against Kobe Woods, one in the first period and another with one minute remaining in the match following a Woods' shot on Lee's leg. Purdue finished off the match with back-to-back decisions from ranked wrestlers at heavyweight and 125 pounds. No. 15 Shawn Streck defeated the Illini's Deuce Rachal, 5-3, in the ninth match of the day, and then No. 12 Luke Welch earned a 7-5 win against No. 19 Travis Piotrowski despite a takedown and reversal for the Illini sophomore. Illinois is now 24-4 against Purdue since Coach Heffernan joined the Illinois coaching staff prior to the 1992-93 season, including a current seven-match winning streak. Up next, the Fighting Illini will return home where they will wrestle the first of three home duals in the season's final four meets. The Orange and Blue are home each of the next three Sundays, beginning with Maryland on January 28 at 1 p.m. For complete coverage of Fighting Illini wrestling, go to FIGHTINILLINI.com and follow @IlliniWrestling on Twitter and Instagram. Illini Notes: The Illini extend their winning streak against Purdue to seven straight duals, dating back to 2010 Coach Heffernan improves to 24-4 against the Boilermakers since joining Illinois' coaching staff prior to the 1992-93 season. Picking up his seventh win of the season, Isaiah Martinez has now earned either a tech fall or pin in six of his seven victories. Martinez is outscoring his opponents 125-41 this season to go along with 34 dual team points. With the win, Isaiah Martinez recorded the 105th win of his career, tying current Illini assistant coach Mike Poeta and former Illini John Dergo and Kevin Puebla for 20th on Illinois' all-time list. Next on the list is Jackson Morse (2010-15) and Jon Llewellyn (1988-91) with 106 wins. With the win over Max Lyon, 184-pounder Emery Parker extends his winning streak to 10 straight matches dating back to December 1 at Iowa. Both Martinez and Parker continue to stay unbeaten in duals this season, carrying a 7-0 record. 5. SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly's non-conference dual wrestling meet Sunday at Air Force has been canceled due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. "Due to the government shutdown, all Air Force Academy home and away intercollegiate athletic events have been cancelled until further notice," according to a statement posted on www.goairforcefalcons.com. "In the event a solution is reached, the Academy will work to reschedule as many missed events as possible." On Saturday, Air Force postponed its men's and women's basketball games against Fresno State as well as a men's hockey match and a women's swim meet. Cal Poly will host Stanford on Friday at 7 p.m. for a Pac-12 Conference dual meet as part of Alumni and Supporter Weekend.
  6. LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- In front of an electric crowd at the Eagle's Nest in Lakewood, Ohio, No. 5 St. Paris Graham nor No. 8 St. Edward disappointed during Saturday night's showdown between Ohio's two best teams. With the match starting at 152 pounds, one of the evening's key swing bouts would be contested right off the bat. Senior two-time state medalist Joey Sanchez started off strong for the Graham Falcons with an opening takedown against freshman Padraic Gallagher, a Cadet National and UWW Cadet freestyle All-American. Gallagher would find his rhythm in the second period, but it was Sanchez who scored a key mid-third period takedown to turn a 4-2 lead into a 6-2 lead. While Gallagher got a takedown late in the bout, Sanchez would put the Falcons on the board first with a 7-5 victory. The next two bouts involved the best two wrestlers - especially in terms of present form - on the Falcons' roster, No. 4 Ryan Thomas and No. 3 Rocky Jordan. Thomas dominated the 160 bout against Hudson Hightower, one of the best overall freshman nationally; six takedowns to none in a 12-6 decision. Jordan then secured a pin at the 2:16 mark of the 170 match against sophomore Michael Garcar to make it 12-0 in the dual meet for St. Paris Graham. A key swing bout would be next, one that defined the dual meet come its end. Sophomore Andrew Shaffer scored an early takedown for the the Falcons, but St. Edward senior Jiryes Zakaib surged back with a second period takedown and then points for stalling and an escape off Shaffer's second injury time in the third period to take a 6-4 lead late into the bout. Shaffer scored the match tying takedown and then rode Zakaib out in regulation, though the official signalled for a third stalling violation against Shaffer, but it was ruled after the buzzer. A takedown for the Graham sophomore in overtime made for an 8-6 decision, and a 15-0 dual meet lead. Next was a key sequence. Having won the coin toss, Graham was able to make St. Edward present first at 195, and they presented No. 7 Cody Howard. The Falcons inserted a backup wrestler. Howard earned a 24-9 technical fall at the 4:42 mark, which some might argue was actually a point saved for St. Paris Graham. The Falcons then bumped up two-time state placers Gage Braun and Johnny Shafer to wrestle 220 and 285. Both wrestlers won their bouts; so instead of likely going 1-2 at 195, 220, and 285, the Falcons went 2-1 (Braun lost to Howard 12-7 at the Ironman). Braun scored a 10-0 major decision over Ironman placer Seamus O'Malley, while Shafer scored a 5-2 decision over senior Luca Santillo. At the television intermission, Graham had won six of seven bouts, and had a 22-5 lead. Turning for home, St. Edward got back in the saddle with an 18-8 major decision from Richard Delsanter against fellow freshman Trace Braun at 106 pounds. Delsanter had eight takedowns and a reversal to eight Braun escapes. No. 20 Tanner Jordan would extend the Graham lead to 25-9 with a 7-0 major decision over sophomore Scott Richter. Jordan scored on a first period takedown, second period reversal, and third period turn. Next came the major momentum swing of the dual meet that got the home crowd going, and gave the St. Edward wrestlers some real hope of a potential turn-around and dual meet upset. Freshman Alek Martin of Graham jumped out to an 8-6 lead over returning state placer Angelo Rini midway through the third period. However, Rini went in on a leg attack, with both wrestlers trying to improve from their neutral position, it was Rini who got the pin over the Ironman placer at the 5:08 mark. The Eagles trailed 25-15 heading into a pair of imminently winnable bouts. State runner-up Bryce Hepner got the Eagles even closer with a 7-1 decision over freshman Nick Moore. Three takedowns during the second and third periods were the difference. Then No. 16 Matt Kazimir made "The Nest" burst into a roar with his pin at the 5:40 mark over sophomores Isaiah Stickley. Trailing 25-24 in the dual meet, St. Edward turned to junior Bryce Andonian, a 2016 state champion. Andonian came into this match riding the high of last week's 10-8 overtime victory over national No. 10 Kevon Davenport. This week's task was another steep one, Ironman champion and national No. 4 J.D. Stickley. Andonian rode the crowd's fury and escalated it further with an opening takedown. Stickley would get a reversal, but Andonian got a late escape in the first period. A second period reversal and rideout made it 5-2 Andonian through two periods. Stickley got an escape early in the third period. Then Stickley was in on a shot, went for a bodylock, but Andonian won the position and almost got the pin. However, it was a five-point move and the final score 10-3. St. Edward had the lead in the dual meet for the first time at 27-25 headed into a winner take all final bout involving No. 7 Mitch Moore, Graham's three-time state champion, and No. 15 Sam Dover for St. Edward. Moore scored a four-point move off a headlock toss towards the edge of the mat midway through the first period of the 145 pound match. Dover would get an escape, ride out Moore for the entire second period, and get an escape early in the third. However, Moore was able to fend off multiple Dover leg attacks. He got the 4-2 victory, which enabled the No. 5 Falcons to beat the No. 8 Eagles 28-27 on Saturday night.
  7. BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- The Utah Valley University wrestling team concluded a perfect weekend trip with a 20-15 win at Pac-12 foe CSU Bakersfield on Saturday evening at the Icardo Center. The Wolverines won six of the 10 bouts on the night, including two by bonus points, to improve to 7-3 on the season (3-1 Big 12). The Roadrunners dropped to 4-8 on the year with the setback (0-1 Pac-12). Sixth-ranked Taylor LaMont (125 pounds), Matt Findlay (141), 16th-ranked Demetrius Romero (165), Kimball Bastian (174), Gary Jantzer (184) and 26th-ranked heavyweight Dustin Dennison all picked up wins for UVU on the night. "Bakersfield is a solid team that is good throughout their lineup, so we knew that it was going to be a tough battle," head UVU coach Greg Williams said. "It was a great match and I have a lot of respect for them (CSU Bakersfield) and the job they do here. But this was definitely a team win, and I'm proud of our guys for battling well." With the contest opening up with the big boys at 285 pounds, the Wolverines got off to another strong start thanks to back-to-back wins from 26th-ranked senior Dennison (285) and sixth-ranked redshirt freshman LaMont (125). After suffering a setback at Fresno State on Friday night, Dennison did a nice job of bouncing back with an 8-2 decision over CSUB's Mark Penyacsek to tie a career-high in victories by earning his 24th victory of the season (24-7). Leading by just a point entering the final period (4-3), LaMont then made his move by picking up an escape, a takedown, and a four-point nearfall to defeat Bakersfield's 27th-ranked Sergio Mendez by major decision, 11-3, and give the Wolverines a 7-0 lead in the dual meet. The 'Runners then bounced back by winning three of the next four bouts to take a 12-11 lead. Twenty-eighth ranked Sean Nickell started the spurt with an 8-0 major decision over Durbin Lloren at 133 pounds, and following a win from UVU 141-pound redshirt freshman Findlay, CSUB's Kalani Tonge (149) and No. 13 Coleman Hammond (157) responded with back-to-back wins over UVU's Matthew Ontiveros and Raider Lofthouse by respective scores of 6-4 and 20-2. Utah Valley's lone win during the stretch was a dominant 19-6 major decision from Findlay at 141 pounds. Trailing 12-11 in the team score, 16th-ranked Romero once again got the Wolverines going with an 8-3 decision over Bakersfield's Jacob Thalin to give UVU a 14-12 lead in the dual. After a scoreless opening period, Romero made his move by recording an escape and a takedown to take a 3-0 lead. He then sealed the victory with two more takedowns and an additional riding time point in the final stanza to take the bout by a score of 8-3. Romero's victory was the first of three straight wins for the Wolverines, as sophomore 174-pounder Bastian and 184-pound redshirt freshman Jantzer both followed with wins of their own. Bastian added to UVU's lead with a hard fought 5-3 win over Bryan Battisto to give Utah Valley a 17-12 advantage. With the contest tied at 2-2 in the third frame, Bastian picked up an escape point and a decisive takedown to seal the victory by two points. Jantzer then recorded a tightly contested 3-2 victory over Dom Ducharme to lock up the dual victory for the Wolverines by taking a 20-12 lead with just one match to go. Deadlocked at 1-1 in the final period, Jantzer picked up the go-ahead takedown and managed to just give up an escape point late, as he held on for the 3-2 win. In the final match of the night that marked a rematch from last year's NCAA Championships, CSUB's 14th-ranked Matt Williams picked up the final win of the contest by defeating UVU sophomore 197-pounder Tanner Orndorff by a score of 10-8. Trailing 8-3 in the third, Orndorff responded with an escape and a pair of takedowns to make things close, but in the end Williams managed to hang on to win by two. After going a perfect 2-0 on the weekend with wins over Big 12 opponent Fresno State and Pac-12 foe CSUB, the Wolverines will now return home to host fellow Big 12 foe Oklahoma on Friday, Feb. 2 at UVU's Lockhart Arena. The Big 12 Conference dual meet will begin at 7 p.m. MT and will be televised locally on UVU TV. Results: 285: #26 Dustin Dennison (UVU) Dec. 8. FARGO, N.D. -- Eight Cowboys earned wins as the Wyoming (8-3, 2-2 Big 12) wrestling team defeated Big 12 foe North Dakota State, 32-6, on Saturday evening in Fargo, N.D. It was the fifth-straight win for UW in Fargo. "I'm happy when looking at the team score," UW head coach Mark Branch said. "But we no doubt came out a little flat tonight. I think the some of the guys allowed the travel schedule to affect them. It was nice for a majority of our guys to get a win, but overall the energy was lacking a bit. It was awesome to finish the way we did. Dewey (Krueger) gave up 40 pounds, went out there and was impressive. It'll be nice to get back home into our regular routine. We need to start focusing on the end of the season and make sure we show up with the energy needed. All of the duals ahead will be tough, but we're looking forward to it." No. 5 Montorie Bridges wasted no time in getting to No. 24 Cam Sykora at 133 pounds. He roared to a 14-4 major with six takedowns over the NCAA Qualifier. It became his fourth win against a ranked competitor in his redshirt freshman season. The major evened the dual at four after the first two bouts. Bryce Meredith, holding the No. 1 ranking at 141 pounds, notched a pair of takedowns in the first period against Nico Colunga to set the tone. He was in control throughout and ultimately cruised to an 18-3 tech. fall for UW's second win of the evening. It was Meredith's second tech. fall this season and moved Wyoming out in front, 9-4. At 149 pounds, No. 19 Sam Turner held on for a 6-3 decision over Kyle Gliva. Turner led the entire match and scored two takedowns, with two escapes for the victory. In the second of three matchups with both wrestlers ranked, No. 12 Archie Colgan used an escape and takedown to tie the match at three in the final period, but riding time gave the decision to No. 14 Clay Ream, a three-time NCAA Qualifier. No. 14 Branson Ashworth faced No. 19 Andrew Fogarty after intermission. The junior came away with a 2-0 decision for his second win against a ranked opponent this season. Ashworth used an escape in the second period and riding time for the victory. In an offensive showdown at 174 pounds, Kyle Pope withheld Charley Popp for an 11-10 decision. Pope used four takedowns on way to triumph. Chaz Polson made quick work of Cole Witzig at 184 pounds. Polson shined with an 18-2 tech. fall for his second Big 12 win. Dewey Krueger bumped up to pounce Cordell Eaton at 197 pounds. The sophomore impressively pinned Eaton in the first period for what was his first win in conference action. Krueger now has wins at 157, 174 and 197 pounds this season. In the final bout of the night, all Sam Eagan needed was a takedown and escape for the 3-2 decision over Daniel Stibral. It was also his first Big 12 win this season. The Brown and Gold will be back in action on Jan. 28. UW will welcome Fresno State for a 6 p.m. MT dual in the Arena-Auditorium. "It's an exciting weekend to have not only a Pac-12 weekend of conference foes but, at the same time, the opportunity to recognize the greatest team in the history of the Arizona State program," said head coach Zeke Jones. "I think it's great for the past to see the future and for the future to see the past." The victory over the Beavers constitutes the Sun Devils' ninth-straight win, a streak long enough to tie the 1989-90 Sun Devils for the third-longest win streak in program history. Right after at 184, freshman Kordell Norfleet posted a major decision (16-5) over Collbran Meeker, his second major decision victory of his career. The Beavers continued to pull close, winning bouts at 133 and 141, until No. 11 Josh Maruca earned a tech fall (17-2) over Kurt Mode to further the lead for the Sun Devils. No. 13 Anthony Valencia earned a final pin for the Sun Devils at 165, taking down Rodney Williams in 2:38. 15. TEMPE, Ariz. -- Despite finding themselves down early in the match, No. 8/9 Arizona State rebounded to tie the match and, after gaining the lead in the third bout, never looked back en route to a 24-15 win vs. Stanford in their Pac-12 opener. The win vs. the Cardinal marked the first since the 2012-13 season. The Sun Devils' current eight-match win streak is tied for fourth-longest in program history (also eight straight in 1984-85, 1988-89, and 2007-08). The 1989-90 Sun Devils won nine straight, the 1977-78 team 13 straight, and the 1975-76 team earned a perfect 15-0 record for the longest win streak in program history. "Tonight's win is about improvement," said head coach Zeke Jones. "We haven't beat Stanford since I've been here, so it's nice to get on the winning side with them because they're obviously a great team. We lost the close matches but our men overall got their hands raised collectively as a team so that's a good thing." After an extra four minutes of competition, No. 6 Nathan Butler squeaked out a win vs. No. 4 Tanner Hall at heavyweight as Stanford started the match with a 3-0 lead. The Sun Devils rebounded as No. 11 Ryan Millhof earned a 7-1 decision vs. No. 22 Gabe Townsell, tying the match, and No. 13 Ali Naser would gain the lead for the Sun Devils for good at 133 on a tech fall. No. 1 Zahid Valencia (174) improved to 21-0 with his 11th straight bonus point win. New Sun Devil assistant coach Antonio Pierce served as the guest coach for ASU. The program also honored MMA stars past and present in the annual MMA Night. Arizona State returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 20, hosting Oregon State at 1:30 pm MT on Pac-12 Network (pac-12.com/live). Saturday's match will also celebrate the 30th anniversary of ASU's 1988 NCAA Championship team. The team will be honored at halftime with a special reception to follow at Tempe Mission Palms. Following a 7-3 victory from Fresno State heavyweight AJ Nevills, who is ranked 28th in the latest NCAA Coaches' Panel Ranking, over senior Dustin Dennison, Utah Valley then bounced back nicely by winning three straight matches to extend its lead to 22-3. Sixth-ranked LaMont started the rally for the Wolverines with a first-period fall over Sean Williams at 125 pounds (1:44). Clovis, California native Lloren then followed with a 6-1 decision over Trevor Williams at 133, and 141-pound redshirt freshman Findlay capped the spurt with an 11-3 major decision over Chris De Loza to give the Wolverines a 22-3 advantage. Findlay recorded four takedowns, a pair of escapes, and a riding time point en route to recording the bonus-point win over his Fresno State counterpart. Former Wolverine and 22nd-ranked Khristian Olivas then responded for the Bulldogs with a 13-5 win over Fresno native and UVU junior Matthew Ontiveros at 149 pounds to make it a 22-7 score. In the final bout of the night, 16th-ranked sophomore Romero answered for the Wolverines with a 13-5 major decision over Isaiah Hokit to cap the contest at 26-12. Romero recorded five takedowns, an escape, a penalty point and a riding time point on his way to earning UVU's third bonus-point win of the evening. Robert Winters Jr. went up against Spencer Empey in the heavyweight class and the pair were scoreless after the first period. Empey managed to get an escape in the second period to lead Winters Jr. 1-0. Winters Jr. tied it up in the third with an escape and the match went to overtime. With :19 seconds left in overtime, Winters Jr. had a takedown of Empey for a 3-1 sudden victory. UNC was back in front with a 7-5 advantage over the Mustangs. In the 125 lb weight class, Sean Cannon looked to extend UNC's lead against Yoshito Funakoshi. The match was tied at two after the first period with Cannon earning an escape and a penalty point. The second period started with Cannon getting a takedown on Funakoshi and a 3-2 lead. The lead did not last long as Funakoshi scored his own takedown. Cannon managed to tie it up again with a penalty, but Funakoshi had an escape right after to pick up the 5-4 decision win. Cal Poly retook the lead 8-7. Now in the 133 lb weight class, Rico Montoya battled Ty Schilling and scored an early takedown to grab the lead in the first period. Montoya established himself in the second period with three takedowns and a reversal for a 10-3 lead over Schilling. Three more takedowns in the third period, plus riding time was enough for Montoya to earned 17-6 major decision victory over Schilling and UNC now lead 11-8 in the dual heading into the intermission. The dual resumed in the 141 lb weight class with Benjamin Polkowske meeting Colton Schilling. Polkowske had the advantage early with a takedown and a four-point near fall for a 6-0 lead. Schilling fought back with a reversal and his own four-point near fall to tie the match at six. Schilling would get a two-point and four-point near fall, before finally pinning Polkowske at 2:24. Cal Poly now had a 14-11 over UNC. Jimmy Fate went against Joshy Cortez in the 149 lb weight class and Cortez raced ahead in the first with a pair of takedowns on Fate. Cortez extended the lead in the second period with an escape and added riding time in the third for a 6-2 decision win over Fate. The Mustangs lead grew to 17-11. Tyler Kinn went for the Bears in the 157 lb weight class, looking for a win after a tough stretch of matches. He would face Jett Moy and Kinn earned a 2-1 lead after a takedown in the first period. Moy tied the match at two with an escape, and Kinn added another takedown for a 4-2 advantage. In the third period, Kinn had two, take downs and an escape for a 10-3 lead. With riding time, Kinn managed an 11-3 major decision victory over Moy and UNC closed the gap on Cal Poly at 17-15. With a chance to take the lead in the dual, UNC was in the best situation with Keilan Torres in the 165 lb weight class against Ryan Farina. Torres had a takedown of Farina in the first period for an early 2-0 lead, but the match would not need another period. Torres managed to pin Farina with six seconds left in the first and UNC found themselves with a 21-17 lead. Now with the lead, all Sethan Bogulski needed to do in the 174 lb weight class was stop Cal Poly's Matt Wilhelm from scoring any bonus points. Bogulski was up to the task and stayed close to Wilhelm in the first period, only trailing 1-2. Wilhelm earned an escape in the second period, but the damage was limited to that and Boulgski was still in a safe position. Despite an early takedown that gave Wilhlem a 5-1 advantage, Bogulski managed to get an escape and Wilhlem defeated him 5-2 by decision. \ UNC had rallied from a 17-11 deficit to squeak out a 21-20 dual victory over Cal Poly. Both teams had a fall in the dual, but the Bears managed to win three matches by major decision and held the Mustangs only other bonus points to a tech fall. In their words Rico Montoya "I think getting the first takedown is huge because it sets the tone. The first takedown allows you to wrestle the match at your pace and start out with two points. I put my hips out and got in the leg right away and it happened so fast that I got the reversal instead of the escape which was big." Keilan Torres "I pinned him in a tilt. I think he just kind of laid there to honest. I tightened it up and just made sure that it was tight and he couldn't move. I knew what it was going to do for the team score so I went out there trying to get the pin. I envisioned it happening that way. This team is my family and to put us ahead means a lot to me." Tyler Kinn "It's been a long losing streak for sure. I have been looking for this win and training for it for sure. I always try to go out there and push the pace regardless of the score and I felt him starting to break under the pressure. I wanted to keep pushing the pace and stay heavy on his head. I knew it was go time and trying to get those bonus points and looking for my shots." Troy Nickerson, Head Coach "I think tonight was the perfect example of dual meet wrestling. I think these guys wrestled for each other as a team. Those bonus points were huge and that's what it came down to. We split five-five, half the guys wrestled pretty well and the other not so much. I appreciate a guy like Seth Bogulski so much. I think he is in a position to win the match himself. But he understands where the team score is at and he made a sacrifice tonight. I think he beats him later in the year. Guys like Tyler Kinn, that was a big match for him. I knew Keilan would get the pin. Dylan and Rico, I expect them to step up. It was nice to see a guy like Robert Winters step up." Next Up There is little time to rest for Northern Colorado, as they depart tomorrow for Norman to take on Oklahoma in a Big 12 dual. 18. BLAIRSTOWN, N.J. -- One year after making the trip to Kingston, Pa., and suffering a 31-27 defeat despite winning eight of the fourteen weight classes, on this Friday night No. 2 Blair Academy (N.J.) protected its home turf to win nine weight classes in a 37-24 victory over No. 3 Wyoming Seminary. As was the expectation, the Buccaneers came out strong in the opening three weight classes. No. 10 Ryan Miller upended Tim Levine 7-3 in the evening's opening bout at 106 pounds. Then it was a pair of momentum crucial pins from wrestlers ranked No. 2 nationally, Trevor Mastrogiovanni in 1:51 over Nic Botello at 113 and Michael Colaiocco late in the match at the 5:32 mark over Zeke Escalera at 120. However, the Blue Knights countered with three wins of their own to level the dual meet at 15-15. In a battle of top ten 126-pound wrestlers, each of whom was a National Prep champion last year, No. 2 Beau Bartlett pinned No. 9 Chris Cannon in 2:53. Then, Wyoming Seminary flipped wrestlers from their nationally ranked weight classes. No. 14 (at 138) Jack Davis won the 132 pound bout 9-7 over No. 20 Travis Mastrogiovanni, and No. 5 (at 132) Carson Manville earned a win by disqualification at 138 over three-time National Prep placer Malcolm Robinson. The next five bouts would tell the tale in the dual meet. Starting with the 145 and 152 bouts, which placed relatively unheralded wrestlers -- in the context of this dual meet -- against one another. Blair Academy won the 145 pound match on the strength of two-time National Prep placer Mike Madara, who was up two weight classes from where he wrestled at the Ironman and Beast. Madara beat fellow junior Mosha Schwartz, last year a National Prep runner-up at 113 pounds, by a 9-3 decision. At 152 pounds it was Will Kaiser winning a 4-3 decision for the Buccaneers over fellow National Prep fifth place finisher Benny Baker. With the No. 2 team in the country up 21-15 through eight bouts, the 160 pound match featured a pair of nationally ranked wrestlers. Blair Academy added fuel to their burst as No. 5 Andrew Merola upended No. 18 Jake Hendricks in a 4-0 decision. The win streak extended to four when No. 5 Julian Ramirez pinned Jake Stefanowicz at the 1:32 mark. After No. 10 Leo Tarantino won a tight 6-5 decision over No. 17 Darrien Roberts at 182, the dual meet was all over but for determining the final score. Five successive wins for Blair Academy turned a 15-15 tie into a 33-15 rout, where Wyoming Seminary would need to pin out just to tie the score, but most likely lose on criteria. At 195 pounds, it was No. 16 Austin Cooley giving the Blue Knights a consolaton victory, 6-4 in the bout over freshman Peyton Craft, as Blair Academy now cinched the dual meet. The Buccaneers would get one last win on the evening from No. 12 Owen Trephan in a 19-6 major decision over Michael Doggett. However, Wyoming Seminary's Anthony Cutrie would tell the final tale on this Friday night with a pin over Kraig Correll at the 4:13 mark to cement the final score as No. 2 Blair Academy 37 and No. 3 Wyoming Seminary 24.
  19. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- After dropping decisions in three of the first four matches of Friday night's dual at American, the Navy wrestling team (6-1, 3-1 EIWA) rallied to win the final six matches and post a 25-9 victory over the Eagles (4-4, 1-2 EIWA). Winners of each of the last seven matches against American, the Midshipmen now lead the all-time series 13-1. “It was good to see the team bounce back after a tough loss last weekend,” said fourth-year head coach Joel Sharratt, whose Mids dropped their first dual of the season last Sunday against sixth-ranked Lehigh. “I can say the greatest thing I take away from tonight is the resiliency in this team. “American has notched some good wins this year and has a group of very talented athletes. Our depth across the 10 weights and the balance of the team among the classes is a very positive indicator for where we are and where we are headed.” American looked to get off to a fast start with three of its best weight classes among the first four bouts. While the Eagles won those three weight classes - 197, 285, 125 - none of the three managed bonus points. Navy's Joshua Roetman (Kotzebue, Alaska) kept 12th-ranked Jeric Kasunic relatively off-balance with Kasunic leading off the night with a 5-1 victory at 197 pounds. American pushed its lead to 6-0 with a 3-2 victory by Brett Dempsey at heavyweight. Navy senior Austin Faunce (Lake Oswego, Ore.) picked up the first points of the match on a reversal with 38 seconds left in the second period, however, just 11 seconds later Dempsey was able to get the escape. Dempsey went on to not only get the match-tying escape, but was able to get it with exactly one minute of riding time remaining in his favor and that would be the deciding factor in the match. The Mids broke into the scoring column when rookie Aslan Kilic (Marietta, Ga.) put forth a solid performance at 125 pounds against redshirt freshman Gage Curry. Kilic trailed 3-1 going into the final period, but an escape followed by a takedown with 35 seconds left gave him a one-point advantage. Unable to hold on, Kilic gave up the escape with 24 seconds left, allowing Curry to tie the match. Kilic, though, gutted out the win thanks to a takedown with just one second left on the clock. “I can't say I liked being down by six points early, but it was great to see Aslan go out there with the momentum against us and turn it around at 125,” Sharratt pointed out. Though the outcome would go against Cody Trybus (Elkton, Md.), the rookie gave a terrific effort against 10th-ranked Josh Terao at 133 pounds. Trybus held Terao scoreless in the opening period, before gave up an escape and takedown early in the second period. Trybus would get free to get to within two points with 14 seconds left in the third period, but was unable to upset one of the nation's best in a 4-1 loss. “Trybus has wrestled several of the top ranked opponents in the country and keeps battling back with heart and passion,” said Sharratt. Navy won the next two matches by identical 3-2 scores to pull even with the Eagles. Nineteenth-ranked Nicholas Gil (Crystal Lake, Ill.) capitalized on a counter attack to score what would be the match-winning takedown over redshirt freshman Kizhan Clarke at 141 pounds, while team captain Corey Wilding (Sr. / Pittsburgh, Pa.) held 20th-ranked Michael Sprague scoreless in the final period and used his one-minute, 29 seconds of riding time to pick up the win. It marked just the second career win over a ranked opponent in Wilding's four-year career. “Wilding's win at 149 is a win he has been after for a couple years,” said Sharratt. “He has dropped a couple close bouts to Sprague previously and has really improved in the scrambles and spacial awareness in the flurry position.” Senior 157-pound Zack Davis (Granger, Ind.) gave the Mids their first lead, one it would not relinquish, thanks to a 7-3 victory over rookie Eric Hong. Davis used a single-leg to take a 4-2 lead at the end of the second and stretched to lead to four with another single-leg to open the third. Davis topped two minutes in riding time to secure what was his 95th collegiate win, moving him into a tie for 17th on the Mids' all-time wins list with Frank Shaffer (1980-83). “Davis pushed the match the way we speak to at the Naval Academy - line to line and whistle to whistle. No matter the score, he is on the attack,” said Sharratt. Known more for his low-scoring, methodical bouts, 20th-ranked Drew Daniels (Sr. / Overland Park, Kan.) produced a season-high tying 10 points in a 10-5 decision over American redshirt freshman Anthony Wokasch at 165 pounds. Daniels scored the opening points of the match less than 30 seconds into the match and never trailed as he recorded four takedowns en route to his 16th win of the season. “Tonight was one of the better matches I have seen from Drew,” said Sharratt. “He showed a glimpse of how talented he is when he allows himself to wrestle. He progressively wrestled better and more aggressive as the match went on. He is very dangerous when he is hunting in the third period and up by four points.” Sophomore AJ Alford (Beech Island, S.C.) has stepped up to the challenge of replacing an injured Jadaen Bernstein (Glen Gardner, N.J.) in the lineup at 174 pounds over the last three weeks. Alford once again answered the call on Friday evening, sealing the Navy victory with a 13-3 major decision over American redshirt junior Michael Eckhart. An exciting match, Alford owned a 6-1 advantage after a last second takedown and back points to end the first period. He was able to get the reversal to open the second period and tacked on a takedown with 16 seconds remaining in the second to push his lead to 10-2. Alford added another takedown in the final stanza and better than two minutes of riding time aided his fourth dual victory of the season. Eighteenth-ranked 184-pound Michael Coleman (Sr. / Hudson, Ohio) stepped to the mat for the Mids in the final match of the night where he built a 10-0 advantage over redshirt freshman Prince Hyeamang before pinning him officially with eight seconds left in the opening period to give Navy a 25-9 victory. “Starting at 197 was a nice challenge since we have been consistently starting at 125. It made the dynamic a little different and it was inspiring to see guys step up like Alford at 174 and Coleman dominating his opponent to close the match.” Navy will be back on the mat Sunday afternoon when it travels to Durham, N.C. to battle Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium beginning at 2:00 pm. 20. STILLWATER -- The Oklahoma State wrestling team tallied its fourth Big 12 win of the season on Friday night, defeating West Virginia, 29-6, at Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Cowboys (7-1, 4-0 Big 12) won nine of 10 matches on Friday, including a couple of ranked wins by Nick Piccininni and Preston Weigel, as well as a pair of major decisions from Boo Lewallen and Jonce Blaylock. "I want to see more out of this team," head coach John Smith said. "I'm just not seeing the level that I think we're capable of seeing. And we have got to start putting it together and pushing ourselves a little bit harder in these matches. To score points, if somebody's coming out and trying to keep us from scoring, have the will to go in and not let that kind of match take place, I thought we saw that a little bit in a couple matches … I'm looking for a lot more aggression." Matched up with No. 14 Zeke Moisey, Piccininni came away with the 4-0 decision to give the Pokes an early, 3-0 edge. Tied with no score after one period, Moisey took down to open the second. The Cowboy redshirt sophomore would ride out the entirety of the period, however, and chose down to start the third. Piccininni escaped just a couple of seconds into the final frame and scored on a takedown with 25 seconds to go. Kaid Brock followed Piccininni's win up with a 6-1 decision at 133 pounds, defeating West Virginia's Matthew Schmitt. Brock was in control for most of the match, scoring takedowns in the first and second periods and allowing no offensive scores from Schmitt to earn his 16th win on the year. Dean Heil scored another decision for the Pokes at 141 with an 11-5 victory against Christian Monserrat. Heil used four takedowns and a reversal, as well as riding time, to rack up 11 points; however, Monserrat's reversal with just seconds to go in the match wiped away a would-be major decision from the two-time defending champ. The Cowboys got their bonus points at 149 and 157, as Lewallen and Blaylock controlled their opponents for major decisions. Lewallen overwhelmed West Virginia's Kyler Rea from the opening whistle, scoring three takedowns in the opening period to take a 6-2 lead into the second. The Cowboy redshirt sophomore finished off the match with takedowns in both of the second and third frames to secure the 12-4 win. Blaylock overcame an early takedown from Zach Moore to open the match, and rebounded with a takedown of his own before the end of the period to head to the second tied at three. From there, it was all Blaylock, who got in on three more scores over the final two periods and pull away for the 13-5 major. The Mountaineers got on the board with their only win of the night at 165 pounds. In his first career start, Cowboy Dalton Moran traded takedowns in the first period with Nick Kiussis. With a 3-2 lead, Moran was reversed and eventually pinned in 2:04. Jacobe Smith got the Cowboys back on track at 174 with a 9-4 decision over Parker VonEgidy. Smith used flurries in the first and third periods to rack up three takedowns and a reversal on his way to the his fifth-straight win. At 184 pounds, tied at one apiece after regulation, Cowboy Keegan Moore and Brenden McRill headed to sudden victory to decide their match. It was Moore that would come up with the win, tallying a takedown with 11 seconds to go to lock up the 3-1 decision. In a rematch of last year's 197-pound Big 12 title bout, Preston Weigel went head-to-head with West Virginia's 13th-ranked Jacob Smith. Smith struck first , scoring a takedown on the edge of the mat early in the first period to lead, 2-1, after one. Choosing down, Weigel escaped quickly to open the second frame before scoring on a takedown of his own to take a 4-2 lead. Smith chose the down position to open the third, but couldn't get off bottom, as Weigel rode the Mountaineer for the remainder of the final period on his way to a 5-2 decision. "(It was about) being tough," Weigel said. "I needed it there. You don't want to give him a chance. He was sitting there stalling, and you just have to go get it when you need it." Finally, Derek White finished off the dual with a 10-4 win over West Virginia's Brandon Ngati. White had little trouble with the Mountaineer sophomore, scoring four takedowns en route to his 13th win of the season. The Cowboys will return to Gallagher-Iba Arena on Sunday at 1 p.m. as they host Kent State. Results: 125: No. 7 Nick Piccininni (OSU) dec. No. 14 Zeke Moisey 4-0 133: No. 3 Kaid Brock (OSU) dec. 21. Evanston, Ill. -- Seventh-ranked Taylor Venz's delivered a win in the final match of the night with the Huskers down three team points, and 18th-ranked Nebraska (5-3, 2-1 Big Ten) won by criteria over No. 20 Northwestern (7-2, 2-2 Big Ten) by a score of 19-18 on Friday night at Patten Gym. With the match tied at 18-18 after 10 bouts, the Huskers won by Criteria 3.15.3 (total match points scored only from decisions, major decisions and technical falls) by a 68-66 margin. Friday marked Nebraska's first-ever win by criteria since tiebreaker rules in collegiate wrestling were changed in the mid-2000s, and flipped the script from the last time Nebraska visited the Land of Lincoln, as NU fell to Illinois by the third criteria, 18-17, two weeks ago. Nebraska's effort was boosted by bonus-point wins from a pair of Chicago natives, as No. 11 Isaiah White won a technical fall at 165 pounds, while freshman Jason Renteria defeated a ranked opponent by a major decision at 133. NU also won decisions by No. 12 Chad Red Jr. at 141 and No. 8 Tyler Berger at 157. While Nebraska trailed the Wildcats, 18-15, entering the final match of the night at 184 pounds, NU led in total match points, 66-65. Venz and Mitch Sliga wrestled to a scoreless tie through two periods, and the Northwestern grappler escaped from Venz's grasp early in the third period to take a 1-0 lead, but the Husker scored a clutch takedown in the third period and rode Sliga out to clinch a victory in the bout and the match. With the win, Venz runs his record to 16-3 on the year. Northwestern began the match on a 10-0 run, as the Wildcats won bouts at 197, heavyweight and 125 pounds, before Renteria notched a 15-5 win over No. 19 Colin Valdiviez. Renteria's win marked his first over a ranked opponent in just his second-career varsity match, as he moves to 2-0 on the season. Red kept the Nebraska momentum rolling with a 6-2 win over Alec McKenna at 141 pounds, as Red improves to 13-6 on the year. After No. 4 Ryan Deakin of Northwestern won a 11-2 major decision over No. 10 Colton McCrystal at 141 pounds, Berger kept Nebraska within striking distance with a 3-1 decision over Shayne Oster, as NU trailed 14-10 heading into the 165-pound match. White gave Nebraska its first lead of the match with a 21-6 technical fall over Michael Sepke, as he improves to 16-2 on the year and 7-0 in duals. He scored eight takedowns and a four-point nearfall on his way to his third technical fall of the season. Northwestern re-took the lead with a win at 174 pounds, as No. 18 Johnny Sebastian won a major decision over Beau Breske, 11-3, before Venz clinched the match for the Big Red. At 197 pounds, Eric Schultz fell to Zack Chakonis by a 10-9 decision, before Patrick Grayson dropped a 2-1 decision in the first tiebreaker session to Conan Jennings in his first-career dual meet. 10th-ranked Sebastian Rivera defeated Mitchell Maginnis by a score of 17-6. Nebraska returns to action on Sunday afternoon, as the Huskers welcome 16th-ranked Rutgers to the Devaney Center. Sunday's matinee is set to begin at 1 p.m. (CT), with a live stream available on BTN Plus and FloWrestling. Fans are reminded that the Rutgers dual starts one hour earlier than most other Sunday home duals this season, as the doors will open at noon. Tickets are available now at Huskers.com/Tickets or by calling 1-800-8-BIG-RED. The first 250 fans will receive a free Nebraska Carhartt stocking cap. Results: 197: Zack Chakonis (NW) dec. 22. ATHENS, Ohio -- The Grudge Match Trophy changed hands Friday night as Kent State won six of the first seven matches in an 18-13 victory at Ohio. The Golden Flashes (11-6) earned their first Mid-American Conference win of the season and have now won their last three dual meets. "We wrestled hard tonight and the guys that won looked good," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "We just need to keep improving." Freshman Jake Ferri quieted the Convocation Center crowd with his first career MAC dual victory, a 7-4 decision over Trevor Giallombardo. The Flashes extended their team lead to 9-4 when senior Chance Driscoll edged Nick Vestal 5-3. For the second straight dual, Driscoll wrestled up a weight class at 149, filling in for an injured Nick Monico. "Jake and Chance came through for us tonight," Andrassy said. "We weren't sure how either of the matches were going to go and if either of them lose, we lose the dual." Kent State's biggest lead (18-4) came when redshirt freshman Dylan Barreiro claimed a 5-3 win over Arsen Arshughyan. Sophomore Tim Rooney (141) and juniors Casey Sparkman (157) and Isaac Bast all contributed to the Flashes' run of five straight wins that concluded with Barreiro. Each of the final three matches were tied late in the third period, but the Bobcats came away with points in all of them. "We could have walked out of there with three more wins," Andrassy said. 23. BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Old Dominion (6-5, 3-1 MAC) wrestling team defeated Buffalo (5-6, 2-2 MAC) in a conference battle on Friday night in Buffalo, N.Y. The Monarchs won seven out of 10 bouts. The Monarch victory marked the first win over Buffalo since January 23, 2015. “We wrestled a complete match tonight from all 10 weight classes. Buffalo competes at a very high pace so we had to be ready. We had four overtime matches and we won three of the four so that shows a lot of toughness,” explained head coach Steve Martin. To start off the match, Michael McGee took Kyle Akins, a returning NCAA qualifier into overtime. McGee won in a tiebreaker with a takedown in the first few seconds. At 133, Caleb Richardson faced No. 16 Bryan Lantry. The match was tied through two periods. In the final seconds of the third period, Lantry scored a takedown to defeat Richardson. "Richardson took a multiple NCAA qualifier that was in the All-American round to the final seconds of their match." Collecting three more points for the Monarchs, Alex Madrigal defeated Jason Estevez by decision at 141. At 149, junior Kenan Carter collected a decision over Nick Palumbo to extend the Old Dominion lead. "Madrigal, Carter, and Wright controlled their opponents the entire match and continue to progress each week." Gathering bonus points for the Monarchs in the 157-pound bout, Larry Early earned a major decision victory over Kobe Garrehy. In the second match that extended into overtime, Luke Drugac landed a takedown in overtime to defeat Noah Grover in the 165-pound bout. "Drugac won a match in overtime so that was awesome to see." At 174, Seldon Wright earned a decision victory over Ryan Kromer for the Monarchs fifth straight win in the dual. In the 184-pound bout, Antonio Agee and Austin Weigel took their battle into overtime. The Monarch earned a takedown just seconds into the first overtime period. Agee marked the third Monarch to earn a win in overtime and the sixth straight win for Old Dominion. At 197, John D'Agostino lost his match by decision to Joe Ariola. In the final bout of the night, Jake Gunning defeated Ali Wahab in three overtime periods. "Wahab took the conference champion into overtime and lost in the ultimate tiebreaker in the most entertaining mtch of the night. He had opportunities to score, which was nice to see. We now have a short turnaround to compete against American at our Alumni Match. American has beaten two top-25 teams in UNC and Duke. This will be another battle we will have to rebound for." 24. MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- No. 3 Mizzou Wrestling (15-0, 6-0 MAC) continued its dominance in the Mid-American Conference Friday, defeating No. 17 Central Michigan (5-4, 2-1 MAC), 29-6, to claim the MAC regular season dual championship. Mizzou has now won the dual title in three of the last four seasons, after winning it in 2015 and 2016. In six MAC duals this season, Mizzou has outscored its opposition, 217-31. Dating back to Jan. 25, 2014, Mizzou has won 34 of its last MAC 35 duals, outscoring its opposition, 1,039-304. DUAL RECAP After a setback at 125 pounds, Mizzou rattled off eight straight victories to take control of the dual, building a 29-3 lead behind bonus point victories from redshirt senior 157-pounder Joey Lavallee (Reno, Nev.), redshirt junior 174-pounder Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.) and redshirt freshman 184-pounder Canten Marriott (Blue Springs, Mo.). Lavallee recorded fifth fall on the season, while Lewis and Marriott each recorded major decisions. NOTABLE TIGERS Lavallee pinned Blake Montrie in the second period at 3:41 to improve to 22-1 on the season. The fall was the 17th fall of his career, and the fifth on the season. Lavallee has won 16 matches by bonus points this season, recording six major decisions and five technical falls in addition to his five falls. Lewis continued his perfect season with a 9-1 major decision over Logan Parks, the fourth major decision on the season for the Tiger junior. With the win, Lewis improves to 23-0 on the season with 21 of his wins coming by bonus points (14 falls, four major decisions, three technical falls). At 184 pounds, Marriott recorded arguably the best win of his career, defeating former MAC Champion and No. 14-ranked Jordan Ellingwood by major decision, 9-1. Marriott improve to 19-4 on the season, with nine of his wins coming by bonus points (five major decisions, three technical falls, one fall). Redshirt junior 149-pounder Grant Leeth (Kearney, Mo.) and redshirt sophomore Jaydin Eierman (Columbia, Mo.) each posted wins over ranked opponents to set themselves up nicely for top seeds at the upcoming MAC Championships in March. Leeth upend No. 3-ranked Justin Oliver with a takedown at the buzzer for a 3-1 decision win, while Eierman looked dominant against No. 10-ranked Mason Smith, controlling the match throughout for a 6-0 win. QUOTABLES Mizzou Head Coach Brian Smith On the performances of Grant Leeth, Canten Marriott and Joey Lavallee… "I'm really pleased with Grant Leeth getting a big win over a tough Justin Oliver, who has been an All-American before. It was a tough match that came down to the end, but Grant found a way to win the match. I was really impressed with Canten Marriott as well, who majored a MAC Champion, Jordan Ellingwood, and put himself in a really good spot for the top seed at the conference tournament. And Joey (Lavallee) is Joey. When he keeps shooting the way he has been, he puts a lot of points on the scoreboard, and is really tough to beat. His senior leadership has been a real key to this team's success this season." On winning the MAC Dual Title… "Most coaches wouldn't do it, but I reminded the team of the feeling last year after we didn't win the dual title, how much of a letdown that was and how much it hurt. We didn't want that to happen again. It was a team goal of ours to win the dual title, and when we show up to wrestle and do what we know we can do, great things are going to happen. This team has done just that all season." UP NEXT Mizzou continues its five-dual road trip to close the season with a matchup against No. 5 Oklahoma State on Saturday, Jan. 27. Action from Gallagher Iba Arena will begin at 7 p.m. (CT), with a live stream of the dual available on FloWrestling for a fee. 25. PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- No. 18 John Van Brill and Michael Van Brill both pinned their opponents as Rutgers wrestling (5-3, 1-2) cruised to a 37-9 victory over Hofstra (7-7, 2-2) Friday night in front of 3,139 fans at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights collected bonus points in seven of their 10 bouts against the Pride, with No. 2 Nick Suriano (125) and No. 12 Richie Lewis (165) each earning tech falls and No. 17 Scott DelVecchio (133), No. 13 Eleazar DeLuca (149) and No. 14 Nicholas Gravina (184) all working major decisions in the dual win. "We were aggressive," said head coach Scott Goodale. "We got on their legs right away, which was really our theme all week long, even leading into Sunday. For us to win this match, we have to get on these guys' legs. It needs to be seven minutes worth of pressure, so we did a good job of that tonight." Suriano started the dual off fast for Rutgers against Jacob Martin, racing to a 14-2 lead after the first period with three takedowns and two four-point near falls. His fifth takedown of the match in the second period secured the 19-3 tech fall over Martin, Suriano's seventh of the season and fourth in dual action. DelVecchio also started strong in his bout with Vinny Vespa, as the South Plainfield, New Jersey, native had a four-point near fall at the end of the first period for an early 8-1 lead. DelVecchio outscored Vespa, 7-2, in the final two periods for a 15-3 major decision to give Rutgers a 9-0 lead after two bouts. Michael Van Brill started his match with two near falls, which contributed to an 8-0 lead on Charlie Kane after period one. Van Brill continued to score on Kane until he got him on his back for his first pin in dual action at the 4:17 mark in the match. The six-point victory extended the Scarlet Knights' lead, 15-0. "Every match you try to look for the best position in each situation," Van Brill said. "I saw the position and got the fall and it worked out fine for me." After back-to-back appearances against top-five opponents, DeLuca used six takedowns over the course of three periods to keep his distance against Conor Muli. DeLuca's final takedown of the match, along with the riding time point, gave him a 14-5 final, his first major decision during the dual season. John Van Brill sent the fans into a frenzy heading into the intermission. Leading 7-4 after the first period, Van Brill started on bottom in period two. At the 1:36 mark in the second period, Van Brill flung Chris Mauriello for a reversal, quickly securing the pin at the 3:28 mark in the match. It was Van Brill's first pin of the dual season. "Any time you see a fall at this level, it's pretty exciting," Goodale said. "It helps the pin pool, and it's good to put someone on their back, get them off the mat and finish it and move on. Good for these guys." After a 2-0 score at the end of the first period, Lewis took control of his match with Ricky Stamm with three takedowns and a two-point near fall for a 10-4 lead with one period left. Lewis kept scoring on Stamm, and his takedown at the 18-second mark of the final period led to a 22-6 tech fall. Lewis has now won five consecutive bouts at 165 pounds and is 9-2 this season. Joseph Grello (174) added an 11-4 major decision, while Gravina muscled a 12-1 major decision courtesy of four takedowns to give Rutgers a 37-0 lead on the Pride. Hofstra would close out the dual with wins at 197 pounds and heavyweight. It will be a quick turnaround for Rutgers, who faces No. 18 Nebraska this Sunday (Jan. 21) at 2 p.m. in Lincoln. The match will be streamed on BTN Plus. "We've normally done a really good job of locking in on the task at hand, and that's what we need to do," Goodale said. "There's adversity right now. We have to wake up early, get on a plain, get out to Lincoln, train and get our weight off. That's Big Ten wrestling, and you have to face it and embrace that adversity." Knight Notes • Rutgers improved its all-time record against Hofstra to 14-9-1, which includes wins in 10 of the programs' last 11 matchups. • Nick Suriano collected his seventh tech fall of the season and fourth in dual action.
