STILLWATER -- The Oklahoma State wrestling team defeated No. 13 Northern Iowa, 24-10, in a nationally-televised dual Saturday afternoon at Gallagher-Iba Arena. With the win, the Cowboys moved to 6-0 in conference competition and picked up their 10th win of the season. Redshirt sophomore Nick Piccininni got the Cowboys rolling with a 12-2 major decision over No. 20 Jay Schwarm at 125. After a slow start in which Schwarm struck first on a takedown in the first period, Piccininni scored a reversal early in the second and a two-point nearfall to take a two-point advantage into the third. The Cowboy scored a takedown in the final period and took Schwarm to his back twice before time expired, scoring six more points to secure his third major decision of the season. Third-ranked Kaid Brock added a major decision of his own to the Cowboys' efforts with a 14-6 defeat of Jack Wagner that included nearly three-and-a-half minutes of riding time. Brock scored two takedowns in the first, and within 15 seconds of the start of the second, escaped and scored another. Wagner would get an escape and takedown of his own before Brock scored a reversal and finished off the match with two more takedowns. The win was the Stillwater native's 20th of the season and 12th to come with bonus points. Getting back on track after a two-match skid, Dean Heil picked up a 4-1 decision over No. 8 Josh Alber on Saturday. After a scoreless first, Heil started in the up position and allowed Alber an escape before he scored a takedown with just more than a minute to go in the second. Heil escaped less than 10 seconds into the third and added a point with 1:15 riding time. "He needed it," head coach John Smith said. "Those things aren't easy and you can lose if you go out there feeling sorry for yourself. It was good to see him hit a nice counter and hit a hard ride when he needed a hard ride. We've seen those matches with them. He's won a lot of tough matches like that. That's what he needs to remember. About 25 to 30 percent of his matches are close like that." Boo Lewallen suffered OSU's first loss of the day in sudden victory to No. 8 Max Thomsen. Lewallen and Thomsen traded escapes in the second and third periods to head to wrap up regulation tied at one apiece; however, it was Thomsen that picked up a takedown halfway through sudden victory for the win. At 157, Jonce Blaylock recorded a 5-2 decision over UNI's Logan Ryan. After two offensively-lacking periods, Blaylock trailed by a point before getting an escape and takedown in the third. Ryan escaped once more, but only for Blaylock to take him down again at the buzzer to polish off the win. It took tenth-ranked Chandler Rogers ten seconds in sudden victory to secure a 7-5 win against Dan Kelly. Rogers picked up two takedowns to open the match and control the first period. Starting the second on bottom, the Cowboy was charged with a technical violation that wiped out a reversal. Rogers was able to escape later in the frame and took a 5-2 lead into the third, but allowed a takedown and was hit with two stall calls to send the match to sudden victory. Hestin Lamons stepped in for Jacobe Smith at 174, dropping a 7-4 decision to Taylor Lujan. The seventh-ranked Lujan took Lamons down twice in the first period, with Lamons scoring escapes on both. Unable to convert on a number of aggressive shots in the second and third, Lamons came up just short of the upset. After Keegan Moore dropped a 12-2 major to No. 10 Drew Foster, Preston Weigel stepped up for the Cowboys to get a 4-3 decision against No. 13 Jacob Holschlag. Weigel went into the final period, leading 3-2 before allowing an escape from the start position to tie the match. His continued dominance from the top position would be the deciding factor in the match as he collected more than two minutes of riding time to pick up the extra point and edge Holschlag. Heavyweight Derek White capped off the afternoon with a major decision over Carter Isley. The Cowboy collected a takedown in each period and dominated on top with more than three-and-a-half minutes of riding time on his way to his ninth major of the year. "I was really encouraged by the fact that he picked up a major decision tonight," Smith said. "My message to him was that if you are that many points above your opponent, there needs to be a sense of urgency. When we have guys that we're wrestling that we're confident about beating, there needs to be a sense of urgency…With Derek, he scored at the 2:50 mark in the first, and that was a little bit longer than I wanted to see, but it's been a fantastic year for him." LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- Luke Werner (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and DJ Fehlman (Warren, Pa./Warren) opened the match with back-to-back major decisions, and Thomas Haines (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) returned to the lineup to close things out as the No. 23 Lock Haven University wrestling team (11-3, 3-2 EWL) rolled past visiting Cleveland State University (3-9, 1-4 EWL) 31-6 today in Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) action. In all, the Bald Eagles won eight of 10 bouts. Bonus points were once again part of the story as Ronnie Perry (Christiana, Pa./Solanco) won by tech fall and Chance Marsteller (New Park, Pa./Kennard-Dale) pinned his way to victory. Four of LHU's eight wins came by way of bonus points. In the only bout featuring nationally-ranked wrestlers, No. 31 Corey Hazel (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) upended No. 29 Nick Corba in a thriller that came down to the final seconds. The win pushed Lock Haven to 11-3 overall on the season and back to above .500 in league action at 3-2. Jared Siegrist (Manheim, Pa./Central) and Trey Hartsock (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) added wins for the Bald Eagles. Lock Haven jumped out to an 8-0 lead after Werner and Fehlman won by major decision at 125 and 133, respectively. The quick start and early momentum proved too much for the Vikings and carried LHU to the lopsided EWL win. Perry, who is ranked No. 16 at 149, put on a clinic. He led 14-0 after the first period and used an early second-period escape to earn the 15-0 tech fall. Marsteller, ranked No. 8 at 165, needed just 2:10 to earn the fall. Siegrist followed Marsteller's pin with a hard-fought 6-3 win at 174. In the dual's premier bout, Hazel thrilled the home crowd with a late takedown and 4-2 win. Hazel and Corba were deadlocked at 0-0 after one, but Corba led 2-0 after two periods. With the 184-pound bout tied 2-2 late, Hazel scored a takedown with just five seconds remaining, earning the upset-win. Hartsock used a workmanlike effort and won 6-3 at 197. No. 13 Haines looked as if he hadn't missed a beat and won 6-0 at 285 to close out the match. It marked the first time he was in the lineup since January 2 at the Virginia Duals, but Haines looked strong after the month-long layoff as he scored two takedowns and racked up 2:42 of riding time. Perry's win marked the 96th of his career as he inches closer to becoming the 20th member of the 100-win club. Marsteller improved to 34-1 on the season. The 34 wins tie him for 10th all-time on the single-season win list. Tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 4), the Bald Eagles will cap a busy week by hosting No. 10 Cornell University. DURHAM, N.C. - Duke redshirt junior Mitch Finesilver and redshirt senior Jacob Kasper notched technical falls to lead the Blue Devils to a 19-16 win over Virginia in ACC wrestling action Saturday afternoon in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils won five bouts overall in the dual, with the bonus points being the difference for Duke. The victory over the Cavaliers is the first for Duke since 2005 and evens the Blue Devils' season mark to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in league action. Virginia drops to 4-8 overall and 0-3 in conference. The Blue Devils grabbed the lead from the opening match and never looked back with rookie Jeremiah Reitz securing the win in the second to last match of the day. Duke opened the afternoon at 157 pounds with 11th-ranked Mitch collecting a 16-0 technical fall over Fred Green. He built a 10-0 advantage in the first period en route to securing his 22nd win of the season and scored the crucial bonus points for a 5-0 advantage on the team score. Zach Finesilver made a valiant comeback in the third period, but came up just short against Andrew Atkinson at 165 pounds, as the Cavaliers got on the scoreboard to make it 5-3. The seesaw action continued with 19th-ranked Matt Finesilver earning three points for the Blue Devils at 174 and Drew Peck answering with a decision for Virginia at 184. Matt, leading 2-1 after the first period, scored four points in the second to pull away from Will Schany for the 8-2 decision. It was his seventh straight victory and 20th of the year. With the Blue Devils holding a narrow 8-6 lead in the team score, Alec Schenk and Kasper quickly launched Duke in front by 10, 16-6, with wins at 197 and heavyweight, respectively. Schenk trailed 4-2 after the opening three minutes before fighting back to tie the bout at 5-5 with two minutes left to wrestle. The Duke captain controlled the final period to win 9-7, his 17th win on the season. Kasper followed suit and did what he's done all season and recorded his fifth technical fall of the year with a hard-fought 18-3 victory. Tied 2-2 with Tyler Love after the first period, Kasper went to work and built his advantage to 9-2 after two stanzas. He continued to work hard, scoring back points in the third to go up 16-3 with seven seconds left. In a restart position with Kasper on top and only seven seconds remaining to get the technical fall, Kasper turned Love just in time to score the crucial two points in his match and the five for the team to put Duke up 16-6. The Cavaliers started to chip away at the 10-point Duke lead with consecutive decisions from No. 16 Louie Hayes at 125 and No. 9 Jack Mueller at 133. The six points from the decision kept Virginia within striking distance of the win with two matches remaining. It was a rematch from the Cliff Keen Invitational at 141 pounds. Reitz was aiming for a repeat performance against Sam Martino to secure the win for the Blue Devils. The Duke rookie scored the early takedown and lead 2-1 after the first period. He rode well throughout the match and held off any offensive threats from Martino to come away with the decisive 4-2 decision. The Blue Devils hit the road for their next dual at Appalachian State Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. Duke returns home Feb. 11 to host ACC foe Pittsburgh. BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Campbell notched six pins on the way to a 44-6 Southern Conference victory over The Citadel Saturday in Carter Gym. Campbell moved to 6-7 overall and 3-1 in SoCon action with the win, while The Citadel dipped to 1-8 on the season and 0-4 in conference matches. No. 23 125 pounder Korbin Meink kicked off the match with a fall over William Jacobs (1:40). At 133 pounds, No. 25 Nathan Boston posted Campbell's quickest fall of the season, pinning Nickolas Long in 23 seconds. At 157, Austin Kraisser notched the Camels' next pin, downing Rian Burris (5:38) to put CU ahead 21-3. The fall was the first of four straight for Campbell, with No. 27 Quentin Perez getting another pin (1:15) at 165, followed by No. 29 Andrew Morgan at 174 (1:49). Luke Funck rounded out the streak with a fall over Michael Lopouchanski at 184, making the CU lead 39-3 with two bouts remaining. At heavyweight, 29th ranked Jere Heino capped off the match with a 17-0 tech fall (4:41), defeating Michael McAleavey and giving Campbell the 44-6 win. Zach Barnes also collected a win for the Camels at 149, topping No. 27 Ty Buckiso by a 6-3 decision. Douglas Gudenburr (141) and Sawyer Root (197) picked up decisions for the Bulldogs in the loss. Campbell will return to action in Edwardsville, Ill., taking on SIU-Edwardsville and VMI on February 11. The Camels will round out the regular season hosting Chattanooga on February 17. VESTAL, N.Y. -- The Binghamton wrestling team finished out the conference portion of their schedule with a 38-6 win over Sacred Heart University Saturday afternoon. The victory, which was fueled by dominating Bearcat performances across the board, pushes BU to a 9-5 overall record and closing 6-1 in the EIWA. In a dual that showed commanding effort from head coach Kyle Borshoff's squad, winning eight out of nine contested matches, five wrestlers lead the charge with bonus point victories. Joe Russ, Vincent DePrez and Steve Schneider totaled for 18 of Binghamton's 38 points, winning by pin in each of their matches while Anthony Lombardo and Dylan Wood both added major decisions to the board. "For the guys to come out today and put on the performance they did is phenomenal," Borshoff said. "We talk about scoring bonus points all the time, and for the team to go out and put together five today with three pins is great. They went out and dictated the pace, wrestled the match on their terms and put in the effort needed to get the results they wanted." Riding a now-six match win streak, Russ started the bonus point fun with a pin over Shaun Williams at 2:26, his third of the season. Making his dual debut as a Bearcat, Dylan Wood earned his first victory with an 11-2 major decision over Adrian Nelson. The redshirt freshman came out shooting, totaling three takedowns, a reversal, two near fall and a point for ride time to get his hand raised. Vincent DePrez made for a quick match for the Bearcats at 165 pounds, earning a single takedown over William Schmidt before the ref hit the mat at 1:25, giving DePrez his fifth pin of the season. Playing off his dominating performance against American in yesterday's match, Lombardo finished the first period against Tom Grosso with a 7-2 lead after two takedowns, two near fall and an escape. Hungry for more, the redshirt junior kept racking up points, combining for five more takedowns en route to a 19-5 major decision, his twelfth bonus point victory on the season. At 184 pounds, Steve Schneider came out with his foot on the gas scoring three takedowns and two near fall over Joe Toci in the first minute of the match. Dragging Toci towards the middle of the mat as he tried to escape, Schneider added a fourth takedown before throwing Toci on his back at 2:25 to earn his first pin of the season. Through a scoreless first period between Frankie Garcia and Alex Harnsberger, Garcia broke the stand still with an escape at the beginning of the second. Adding on two near fall and a point for ride time in the third period, Garcia walked away with a 4-1 decision over Harnsberger. Alex Melikian earned his second dual victory of the season, shooting early in the first period against Mark Boyle to take a 2-0 lead. Getting up and out of Boyle's grasp in the second, Melikian took the escape and a 3-0 lead into the final period. The redshirt freshman added another takedown to the board in the third period, only allowing for two Boyle escapes on his way to a 6-2 victory with ride time. The Bearcats return to the West Gym this Friday February 9 for senior night as they host Northern Illinois at 7 p.m. BU will then host Bloomsburg on Sunday, February 11 at 1 p.m. to close out the home portion of its schedule. FRESNO, Calif. -- Gabriel Townsell, Isaiah Locsin and Paul Fox all registered falls to power Stanford past Fresno State, 27-15, Saturday at the Save Mart Center. Stanford won six of the 10 bouts against Fresno State (4-13) to improve to 6-4 on the season. The dual started at 174 pounds where fifth-year senior Keaton Subjeck found himself trailing freshman Dominic Kincaid, 6-1 after the first period. Subjeck, who is ranked ninth nationally, went to work in the second, cutting into the lead with two takedowns. He added a takedown, an escape a stalling point and 1:07 of riding time in the third to tie the bout, 10-10. In the sudden victory period, Subjeck scored the winning takedown with 26 seconds left to improve to 22-6 overall and 8-1 in duals. The Bulldogs won the next two bouts, including a fall at 197 pounds, to take a 9-3 lead in the dual. At heavyweight, No. 5 Nathan Butler dominated AJ Nevills, 7-1. Butler led 3-0 after two periods. Nevills, the younger brother Cardinal alum Zach Nevills, chose nuetral to start the final frame. Butler scored another takedown and was awarded a stalling point before Nevills was able to escape. Butler tacked on 3:08 of riding time for his 22nd win of the year. At 125 pounds, Townsell trailed Sean Williams early in the first, but recorded a takedown late in the opening period for a 3-2 lead. Townsell earned the fall with just one second left in the second period to give Stanford a 12-9 advantage in the dual. Townsell moves to 17-10 overall and 8-2 in duals after recording his fourth fall of the year. The Cardinal continued to roll at 133 pounds as Mason Pengilly earned a 6-1 decision over Trevor Williams. It was the season debut for Pengilly and pushed the Cardinal lead to 15-9. Locsin made it 21-9 Stanford with a fall in 2:51 over Chris DeLoza at 141 pounds. Locsin picked up his 17th win of the year and his team-best six fall. The Bulldogs ended the Cardinal run at 149 pounds as No. 19 Khristian Olivas posted an 8-3 decision over Stanford's Jake Barry. Fox scored the final points of the night for the Cardinal, registering a fall in 4:18 over Greg Gaxiola at 157 pounds. Fox is now 17-5 overall and 6-1 in duals this season. Stanford returns to The Farm next week to host Oregon State on Saturday, Feb. 10. The dual will begin at 3:30 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks. BLACKSBURG -- No. 9 Virginia Tech won seven of 10 bouts and used three upsets to take down No. 25 North Carolina, 21-9, in front of 3,015 at Carilion Clinic Court on Saturday night. The Hokies (13-2, 3-0 ACC) saw three unranked grapplers defeat ranked Tar Heels (8-9, 2-1 ACC); Brent Moore over No. 16 A.C. Headlee, 3-2, Ryan Blees over No. 6 Troy Heilmann in sudden victory overtime, 3-1, and Hunter Bolen by major decision over No. 13 Ethan Ramos, 14-6. Seniors Jared Haught and Dennis Gustafson both won by decision in their final matches at Cassell Coliseum. Gustafson got the Hokies on the board with a workmanlike 6-0 win at 133 and Brent Moore followed with a wild 3-2 victory over 18th-ranked Headlee that gave Tech the lead for good, 6-3. Moore was leading 1-0 and had riding time locked with the clock winding down before Headlee reversed for two and would've tied the score at 2-2 at the end of regulation. The Hokies challenged and officials rules that Moore had escaped after the take down, giving him a point and a 3-2 decision with riding time. The momentum carried over to the bout at 149 where Blees converted on a single leg takedown in sudden victory overtime to take a 3-1 decision. The reigning Co-ACC Wrestler of the Week, Blees has won 14 of his last 15 matches since dropping down to 149. Heilmann is the highest ranked opponent Blees has defeated this season. After the Tar Heels eeked out a win at 157 with No. 16 Kennedy Monday topping Solomon Chishko, his first collegiate match at that weight, the Hokies would go on to win four straight between 165 and 197. One of those was the lone bonus point victory of the night on either side from Bolen. Bolen led 5-2 with 1:30 left but the 13th-ranked Ramos was able to battle back and tie the score at 6-6. With riding time in Bolen's favor, Ramos let Bolen escape with under 15 seconds left, looking for the match-clinching takedown. Ramos got in on a shot but Bolen was able to come out on top for two and pick up four near fall with the clock expiring, giving him a 14-6 major with riding time. The Hokies return to action on Sunday, Feb. 11, when they travel to Charlottesville to take on Virginia at 1 p.m. Results: 125: James Szymanski (UNC) dec. CAMBRIDGE -- He did it again! For the second time in less than a month, junior heavyweight Tyler Hall picked up a walk-off win for the University of Pennsylvania wrestling team. This time, he defeated Angus Cowell via a 5-2 decision to give Penn its only lead of its dual meet at Harvard and sending the Red and Blue home with a 20-18 win. The Quakers trailed by as many as 12 points before winning five of the last six bouts against the Crimson. Joe Velliquette started the rally with a 4-1 decision over Brock Wilson. No. 18 May Bethea followed with a 20-7 major decision over Tyler Tarsi to get Penn within five at 15-10. Sophomore Brian Krasowski held No. 20 Josef Johnson to just a 3-1 decision, giving Harvard an 18-10 lead with three matches remaining. Those were the last points the Crimson would put on the team scoreboard. Joe Heyob recorded a 4-1 decision over Kanon Dean at 184 to put Penn within striking distance. No. 10 Frank Mattiace worked a 10-1 major decision over Logan Kirby at 197 to make the comeback a reality, leaving Penn behind by just one point with one match remaining. Just as he did at Army West Point, Tyler Hall had the team's fortunes on his back. After a scoreless first period, Hall conceded a reversal in the second period but escaped quickly to head to the third period behind by just one point. After a quick escape to open the third frame, Hall powered through a takedown with 1:25 remaining and would ride out the rest of the stanza for the big win. Penn is no 8-4 and 1-1 in Ivy League competition following a 25-17 loss at Brown to open the day. The Quakers won four matches contested to five for the Bears, but Brown gaining a six-point edge following a forfeit from Penn at 125 helped the Bears build a lead. No. 10 Frank Mattiace gave Penn its only lead of the dual with an 11-2 major decision at 197 pounds in the second bout of the contest. Brown picked up nine points over the next two bouts to take a 12-4 lead the Bears would not relinquish. Penn appeared to gain some momentum following freshman Gianni Ghione's seventh pin of the season at 133, but Brown countered with a pin of its own at 141 to negate the Penn rally. Anthony Cassar celebrates after beating top-ranked Kollin Moore UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State Nittany Lions (12-0, 8-0 B1G), wrestling without top-ranked Jason Nolf at 157, took care of business in a key Big Ten dual meet by beating visiting Ohio State (12-1, 7-1) in sold out Rec Hall. The Nittany Lions roared back from a ten point halftime deficit to post a thrilling 19-18 win, clinching at least a share of the 2018 Big Ten Dual Meet Championship. The Lions won four of five bouts in the second half, highlighted by sophomore Anthony Cassar (Rocky Hill, N.J.) taking care of No. 1 Kollin Moore at 197. Penn State's victory keeps it dual meet win streak alive at 43 and clinches a share of its fifth Big Ten dual crown under head coach Cael Sanderson. A win over Iowa in the sold out Bryce Jordan Center next Saturday would give Penn State the crown outright. The dual began at 125 where senior Carson Kuhn (Sandy, Utah) made his Penn State debut against No. 4 Nathan Tomasello of Ohio State. The Boise State transfer thrilled the crowd with early takedowns and led into the second period but Tomasello rallied to post a 21-12 major. . Senior Corey Keener (Schuylkill Valley, Pa.) nearly upset No. 2 Luke Pletcher but the Buckeye was able to defend his way to a close 5-4 decision, giving Ohio State an early 7-0 lead. True freshman Nick Lee (Evansville, Ind.), ranked No. 6 at 141, suffered a 7-6 upset loss to no. 11 Joey McKenna, dropping the bout on 1:32 riding time for the Buckeye. Senior Zain Retherford (Benton, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 149, got Penn State on the board by dominating No. 7 Ke-Shawn Hayes. Retherford posted a 20-4 technical fall with 3:19 in riding time. The New Jersey native lifted the roof of yet another Rec Hall sellout by controlling the top-ranked Buckeye over the final two periods and rolling to a 6-3 victory. Cassar's triumph gave Penn State a 19-15 lead heading into the final bout of the evening. Junior Nick Nevills (Clovis, Calif.), ranked No. 6 at 285, took on defending NCAA Champion and No. 1-ranked Kyle Snyder in the final match-up. The Nittany Lion battled Snyder tough but lost a close 15-10 decision. The final Buckeye win was not enough and Penn State posted the thrilling, come from behind 19-18 victory. The victory moves Penn State's dual meet win streak to 43, dating back to the 2014-15 season. It is also Penn State's 24th straight Big Ten dual meet victory. Retherford now has 116 career wins, 14th all-time at Penn State. The crowd of 6,699 was the highest this season and is the 40th straight sellout in Rec Hall. Hayes slid down to a fast double leg on the edge of the mat for a second takedown and led 4-1. After a reset, Retherford quickly reversed the Buckeye and added two back points to lead 5-4, a lead he carried into the second stanza. Retherford chose neutral to start the second period and took the Buckeye down to lead 7-4. He tried to turn Hayes for back points and got the turn at the ;20 mark.. Nickal fought off a Martin counter attempt in front of the press table and countered the move for a takedown and a 2-0 lead at :29. The Ohio State bench called for an official review on the scramble. HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The Drexel wrestling team opened the weekend Saturday on Long Island where the Dragons cruised past Hofstra for an EIWA win, 31-12. The Dragons improved to 9-3 (4-3 EIWA) with the victory, while the Pride fell to 8-8 (2-3 EIWA). Drexel jumped out to wins in the first six weight classes, including three bonus-point wins, to take a 24-0 lead. The Dragons then closed out the 31-12 victory with two wins at the final four spots. Tanner Shoap opened the afternoon with a 7-6 decision of Jacob Martin at 125 pounds. At 133 pounds, No. 4 Austin DeSanto returned to the lineup to earn another first-period tech fall over Garrett Lambert, 18-3. Julian Flores earned the Dragons' 39th win by fall of the year with a third-period pin over Vinny Vespa at 141 pounds, followed by Evan Barczak's 4-0 decision win over Ryan Burkert at 149 pounds. PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Senior Zeke Salvo posted a pin to pace six winners for the Bears as Brown University wrestling topped the University of Pennsylvania, 25-17, in an Ivy League dual meet on Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center. With the Bears (3-5, 3-2 EIWA, 1-1 Ivy) celebrating Senior Day as part of their Alumni & Family Weekend, Salvo (Baltimore, Md.) notched a fall to push Brown ahead of the Quakers (7-5, 4-3 EIWA, 0-1 Ivy) in the team score, 18-10, as the Bears maintained at least a four-point edge the rest of the way. Prior to the meet, Brown honored senior wrestlers Salvo, Charlie Banaszak (Bethesda, Md.), Michael Russo (Jersey City, N.J.), and Justin Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) for their hard work and dedication to the program. ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell moved to 3-0 in Ivy League competition with a dominant 33-5 win over Columbia on Saturday afternoon at the Friedman Wrestling Center. The Big Red improved to 8-2 (3-0 Ivy), while the Lions fell to 3-10 (0-1 Ivy). The win was Cornell's 81st consecutive in Ivy League competition and its 37th without a defeat all-time against conference rivals at Friedman. The Big Red won five matches with bonus points, including three by the freshman trio of Ben Darmstadt (197), Yianni Diakomihalis (141) and Max Dean (184). Both Darmstadt and Diakomihalis earned wins by fall and Dean was one of three Big Red grapplers to earn major decision victories and one of three shutout victories on the day. Darmstadt got the dual going at 197, earning an early second period fall over Jacob Young for his 14th of the season. The third-ranked grappler at 197 improved to 22-1 on the year. Gable Steveson edged Daniel "Greg" Kerkvliet 3-2 (Photo/Jeff Beshey, The Guillotine) INVER GROVE HEIGHTS, Minn. -- In a battle of freestyle world champions, Gable Steveson of Apple Valley (Minn.) edged Daniel "Greg" Kerkvliet (Simley, Minn.) 3-2 in front of 1,900 fans on Friday night at Simley High School in Inver Grove Heights, Minn. Apple Valley defeated Simley 38-24. Steveson, the nation's No. 1 senior, won two Cadet world titles before moving up to the Junior level last year and winning a Junior world title in Tampere, Finland. Kerkvliet, the nation's No. 2 220-pounder, won a Cadet world title in freestyle in September. He moved up to heavyweight to face Steveson. With the match tied 1-1 in the third period, Steveson shot a low double leg, which he converted to take a takedown to grab a 3-1 lead. Kerkvliet escaped a short time later, but Steveson held on for the one-point victory. Steveson signed with the University of Minnesota, while the junior Kerkvliet has given a verbal commitment to Oklahoma State. "When we get to the NCAA finals, it's not going to look like this," Steveson, told the Pioneer Press. "The score's not going to be 3-2 next time. All respect to him, but I'm coming for it. USAF Academy, Colo. -- The West Virginia University wrestling team overcame a 18-12 deficit to defeat Air Force, 19-18, on match point criteria, picking up its first-ever Big 12 Conference road win in program history Friday evening, at Clune Arena, in USAF Academy, Colorado. With two bouts remaining, the Mountaineers (4-5, 3-3 Big 12) desperately needed a pair of decisions to tie the dual score at 18-18. Redshirt senior Jacob A. Smith, ranked 18th nationally, answered the call for the Mountaineers, as he grinded out a 6-4 decision over Anthony McLaughlin at 197 pounds to bring West Virginia within three, down 18-15. Sophomore Brandon Ngati followed in his footsteps, capturing a hard-fought 3-1 decision in the heavyweight bout to put the Mountaineers' at 18 on the scoreboard at the end of regulation. With the win, West Virginia ended up walking away with the 19-18 victory based off match point criteria, outscoring Air Force (6-3, 1-2 Big 12), 28-27, for its third win in league action this season. "This time we had to come together as a team," said fourth-year coach Sammie Henson. "We're a family. I think they [the team] really bought into that. They showed a lot of perseverance. We really are a family, and it was really cool to watch them pull this one out. It was ugly. We are on the road, and we are dealing with the altitude. Sometimes a win is ugly, but we'll take it." Redshirt junior Zeke Moisey, ranked No. 15 in the nation, started things off for the Mountaineers with a 7-3 victory over Anthony DeCesare at 125 pounds. Moisey tacked on an early takedown in the first period before using four nearfall points in the second for the 6-1 advantage. DeCesare used a takedown of his own in the third frame, but it wasn't enough, as Moisey captured the 7-3 victory to put the Mountaineers on the scoreboard first. At 133 pounds, redshirt freshman Matthew Schmitt won by forfeit, giving the Mountaineers a 9-0 advantage. However, the Falcons fought back and won three straight matches at 141, 149 and 157 pounds to take a 12-9 lead entering intermission. Freshman Nick Kiussis evened the score at 12-12 with a 4-3 decision at 165 pounds. Air Force's Alexandre Lopouchanski started in the defensive position after a scoreless first frame, earning the escape for the 1-0 lead. Kiussis did not falter though, as he came out firing on all cylinders in the final period, notching a pair of escapes and a takedown for the 4-3 victory over Lopouchanski. Air Force then scored on back-to-back decisions at 174 pounds and 184 pounds, respectively, for the 18-12 match lead. However, it was West Virginia that closed out the dual with a pair of decisions for the overall team victory. OREM, Utah -- The Utah Valley University wrestling team won six of the 10 bouts en route to defeating Big 12 power Oklahoma for the first time in program history by criteria, 19-18, on Friday evening at Lockhart Arena. With OU (7-8, 3-4 Big 12) holding to an 18-15 lead entering the final match, UVU 141-pound redshirt freshman Matt Findlay pulled out a 12-10 overtime victory over No. 26 Mike Longo to deadlock the team score at 18-18. The dual then headed to criteria, and Utah Valley (8-3, 4-1 Big 12) held the tiebreaker thanks to winning six individual matches on the night. "I'm really pleased with how the guys wrestled. I told the team that if they went out and fought, we would win this match because we know that we are good enough," head UVU coach Greg Williams said. "Despite having Taylor LaMont out of the lineup tonight, I'm not surprised with how we wrestled. It was just a wonderful outcome and I'm thrilled for our team, our coaching staff and our fans." Trailing 9-0 after two matches, 16th-ranked sophomore Demetrius Romero got the Wolverines going with a hard fought 3-2 come-from-behind decision over #24 Dewaylon Barnes to jumpstart a five-match winning streak for Utah Valley. Bastian (12-7, 5-2 overall) then followed with the upset of the night by recording the 2-1 victory over the 10th-ranked Sooner and 2017 NCAA qualifier Mejias. After being granted a penalty point in the first and an escape in the second, Bastian held a 2-1 lead over Mejias with time winding down in the final period. Mejias then looked to have scored the go-ahead takedown with mere seconds remaining, but after review, the official erased the takedown off the board and Bastian held on for the big upset. Jantzer (18-10, 7-3 duals) then continued the Wolverine spurt with a 9-6 win of his own over Waddell. The UVU 184-pounder recorded three takedowns, two escapes and an additional riding time point en route to earning the 9-6 decision. With the win, Utah Valley remains in third place in the Big 12 standings with a 4-1 league record. Senior Brandon Sorensen and redshirt freshman Carter Happel, two Iowa natives at opposite ends of their careers, each flattened Gophers on opposite sides of the dual. Sorensen, batting leadoff for the first time this season, opened the dual with a fall in 3:32 at 149 pounds. Nine matches later, after the Hawkeyes had already built a 28-7 lead, Happel put on the finishing touches with a fall in 6:58. Somewhere in between the Hawkeyes won six more bouts, two by major decision and one by technical fall. The Hawkeyes held a 24-8 advantage in takedowns, and recorded three wins over top 10 opponents. It marked their fourth straight win in the series. Robert WatkinsA junior high school teacher and coach has been charged with forging checks and stealing thousands of dollars from a youth wrestling club. Pennsylvania state police arrested Robert Watkins, a social studies teacher and wrestling coach at Towanda Area Junior-Senior High School, who has been charged with two counts of forgery and one count of theft totaling nearly $20,000 from the Towanda Youth Wrestling Club. The alleged incidents took place between March 2016 and November 2017. WNEP-TV reported that arrest papers stated the president of the youth wrestling club told state police money was missing, and someone was forging the president's name. Troopers say that man was Watkins. Court papers indicate that Watkins, 46, wrote a check from the wrestling club for $9,600 to repay a loan he took from his personal retirement fund. EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 1 Nick Suriano (125) secured a win over a top-10 opponent, No. 17 John Van Brill (157) contributed to the pin pool and No. 11 Richie Lewis (165) won by major decision as No. 19 Rutgers (6-5, 2-4) delivered a 22-13 victory over No. 17 Northwestern (8-3, 3-3) Friday night at Patten Gymnasium in Evanston, Illinois. The Scarlet Knights produced wins in six bouts during their dual with the Wildcats, as No. 20 Scott DelVecchio (133), Michael Van Brill (141) and No. 12 Nicholas Gravina (184) also contributed individual victories. The win marked the second in Big Ten Conference action during 2017-18 and was the third ranked dual victory for RU this season. "Anytime you get a win in the Big Ten on the road against a nationally-ranked program, it's big," said head coach Scott Goodale. "I thought we wrestled hard again. We backed up our Penn State effort with another really good effort and we won a lot of close matches, which is important." Suriano faced No. 10 Sebastian Rivera.to start the dual, a rematch from when they both squared off at the Midlands Championships back in December. Suriano collected a takedown in the first period, escaped in the third and added the riding time point for the 4-1 decision over Rivera. The win moved Suriano to 20-0 on the season, as the Bergen Catholic product now owns a perfect 11-0 mark in dual action with victories over five ranked opponents. Suriano defeated Rivera, 7-6, in the semifinal bout at Midlands in their first meeting. Decisions from DelVecchio and Michael Van Brill followed, as Rutgers sprinted out to a 9-0 lead on the Wildcats. DelVecchio trailed Colin Valdiviez, 4-3, after two periods, but landed a takedown with 1:40 left in the match to regain a 5-4 lead. Another takedown followed in the closing seconds of the match, as DelVecchio left Patten Gym with an 8-4 decision. Michael Van Brill also muscled a win for the Scarlet Knights, courtesy of his 5-1 decision over Alec McKenna. Van Brill earned a takedown in the first period, rode McKenna out in period two and added an escape and takedown in the final two minutes for the result. Lewis continued the momentum for the Scarlet Knights, outworking Michael Sepke for the 10-2 major decision. Up 7-2 with 17 seconds left in the match, Lewis delivered his fourth takedown of the night by almost driving Sepke into the scorer's table. ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team earned its fourth straight win over a ranked opponent, claiming seven of 10 matches to down No. 15 Nebraska, 24-10, on Friday evening (Feb. 2) at Cliff Keen Arena. The dual kicked off a four-meet homestand to close out the dual season. The Wolverines claimed the dual's three marquee matches, including one right off the bat with fifth-year senior Domenic Abounader's 9-5 decision over seventh-ranked Taylor Venz in the dual's opening bout. Abounader, ranked fifth nationally, struck quickly on a single-leg takedown in the first period, added another in the second and earned a pair of reversals in the third to earn 2:32 in riding-time advantage. He got a brief scare when Venz used a Peterson roll for a reversal of his own in the third, but Abounader stayed off his back and reversed the position to again to finish on top. Michigan added two more big victories to ice the dual win after the intermission break, with senior/junior Alec Pantaleo and junior/sophomore Logan Massa earning back-to-back decisions over ranked opponents at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively. Pantaleo, ranked seventh, secured his second win of the season over eighth-ranked Tyler Berger, finishing on three explosive double-leg takedowns, including one in the final 10 seconds to add an exclamation point to his 9-3 win. Massa, ranked ninth at 165 pounds, used a counter attack to edge 12th-ranked Isaiah White, 3-1, in overtime. After little more than two escapes in regulation, Massa fought off a White double-leg shot early in the extra frame and spun around for the winning takedown. It snapped a four-match losing streak for Massa -- the last three against top-10 opponents -- since returning from injury. The Wolverines also earned a pair of bonus wins. Graduate student Adam Coon, ranked second at heavyweight, cruised to a 17-2 technical fall against Patrick Grayson behind four takedowns and two turns. After scoring on three first-period takedowns, Coon broke the bout open with a four-point bow and arrow and four-point leg turk in the second. WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- A Max Lyon pin, a major decision from Christian Brunner and a sudden victory win by Nate Limmex put an exclamation point on Purdue's 28-6 win over Michigan State on Friday. The season's final dual at Holloway Gymnasium saw the 24th-ranked Boilermakers (7-6, 1-5 B1G) take eight weights and drop MSU to 5-8 overall and 1-6 in the Big Ten Conference. “I think just stylistically, you look at people when you watch film and you knew that they [Michigan State] were a physical team,” Purdue head wrestling coach Tony Ersland said. “They were not going to hit you with a ton of attacks. They wanted to control the ties and maybe just try and grind the pace of the match down a little bit. We were trying to keep the pace higher throughout the match. We did that in many of the matches, but there were a few tonight where we got beat or it was closer than it should have been because we let the pace get slowed down.” Pace was not a problem for Lyon. The 184-pounder had Shwan Shadaia fighting to stay off his back throughout the first period, and with three seconds remaining, the true freshman locked the far side cradle and got the fall at 2:57. All three of Lyon's pins this season have come in the opening frame. “Mostly I have been working a lot on turns,” Lyon said. “I have been able to turn most kids. That was fun; I should be doing that more often.” The win comes at a crucial time for the rookie. With just three duals remaining, Lyon (16-11) has strung together five consecutive wins, three by major decision and two by fall, after going up against four straight top-10 opponents in Big Ten duals. “I may have not won any of those matches, but my personal growth from wrestling those four guys is just tremendous,” Lyon said. “I felt more confident going out there against those guys, and honestly, I just found myself as a wrestler through wrestling those guys. By the end of it, when I wrestled Emery Parker [of Illinois], I was like, ‘I can compete with these guys. This is me, I can do this.' You cannot rush development. Anything worth doing is hard. I am getting it.” A fast start was the key to a 12-4 major decision for Brunner in the ensuing match at 197. Brunner took his Spartan opponent, Nick May, down at the 2:38 mark in the first period and tilted him for a two- and four-point nearfall. The fourth major decision of the season for the sophomore takes his record to 18-6. Limmex blasted MSU's Javier Gasca with a double-leg takedown in sudden victory to take a 7-5 match at 141 pounds. The match-winning shot came just eight seconds into sudden victory as Limmex improved to 20-12. After missing four duals due to injury, Griffin Parriott made his return to the Boilermakers' lineup at 157 with a 5-3 outing against Jacob Tucker. Purdue is in its third straight and final double-dual weekend of the season. Sunday's opponent, Indiana (6-8, 0-7 B1G), was defeated by No. 14 Illinois 33-9 on Friday. The Boilermakers will be looking to extend their stranglehold on the series with the Hoosiers to eight straight, while also pushing Purdue ahead in the Governor's Cup. BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- A last-minute takedown and four-point near fall by Gage Curry in the final bout of the match lifted American to a 20-14 victory over host Binghamton in an Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association match on Friday. The victory improved the Eagles to 5-5 overall and 2-2 in the EIWA. The Bearcats fell to 8-5 and 4-1 in the league. The triumph included a pair of crucial wins by Eagle freshmen, as Curry finished off the dual with a come-from-behind win at 125, and Eric Hong posted his second dual-match win of the season with a 9-1 major decision victory at 157. "This was quite a 10-man effort tonight," said AU head coach Teague Moore. "I'm very proud and happy how we came back tonight. "Kyle Borshoff's team is very tough and very solid at every weight," Moore said of AU alumnus and former Eagle assistant coach Kyle Borshoff, who is the acting head coach of the Bearcats. "We knew we needed our leaders to lead, and they did. The major swing came from freshmen and fellow Pittsburgh'ers Eric Hong and Gage Curry. Those guys showed grit and determination." Curry, a redshirt freshman, recovered from a 4-1 deficit and trailed Joe Nelson, 6-4, in the third period. With 55 seconds left, he turned a single-leg shot into a takedown and near fall for six points and the match-clinching, 10-6 victory. His win capped a three-bout winning streak that brought the Eagles back from a 14-11 deficit in the team score on the road. Jeric Kasunic beat Alexander Melikian, 8-4, in the 197-pound bout to tie the team score, and Brett Dempsey gave AU the team lead, 17-14, by winning the heavyweight matchup, 9-2 over Sean Dee, and set up the final bout for Curry. Kasunic's win was his 27th of the season (27-3) and his 17th straight. It moved him into eighth on AU's career list with 94 victories, and brought him into the top 20 on the single-season list in wins. Hong earned a major decision with a 9-1 win over Tristan Rifanburg at 157, staking the Eagles to an 11-3 edge in the team score. But two major decisions in a three-bout stretch gave the host Bearcats a 14-11 lead heading into the final three bouts. DEKALB, Ill. -- Redshirt sophomore 141-pounder Jaydin Eierman (Columbia, Mo.), redshirt junior 149-pounder Grant Leeth (Kearney, Mo.) and redshirt senior 197-pounder Willie Miklus (Altoona, Iowa) each scored bonus points to lead No. 3 Mizzou Wrestling (17-0, 7-0 MAC) to a 24-12 win over Northern Illinois (2-8, 0-5 MAC) Friday night at Victor E. Court. With the win, Mizzou concludes Mid-American Conference dual competition with a perfect 7-0 record, the third time in the last four seasons Mizzou has ended the season with a perfect mark in conference competition. In seven MAC duals this season, Mizzou has outscored its opponents, 241-43. Dating back to Jan. 25, 2014, Mizzou has won 35 of its last 36 duals by a combined score of 1,063-316. DUAL RECAP After falling at 125 pounds, Mizzou responded with three straight wins to take a 13-3 lead. Among the victories was a first period fall for Eierman, and a 12-4 major decision for Leeth. The Tigers and Huskies traded wins over the next four bouts before Miklus took the mat at 197 pounds against Max Ihry. The two-time All-American was able to score two takedowns in the first period, and three sets of back points in the second period to clinch an 18-1 technical fall. NOTABLE TIGERS Eierman improved to 23-1 on the season with his 12th fall of the season, pinning Anthony Rubino at 1:32. The Tiger sophomore needs just two more falls on the season to join the program top-10 list for falls in a season. Eierman has scored bonus points in 18 victories this season, adding four major decisions and two technical falls to his 12 pins. Leeth picked up his 13th consecutive win with his 12-4 major decision over Nolan Baker. Leeth improves to 18-2 on the season, with four of his victories coming by bonus points (one major decision, two technical falls, one fall). Leeth has not lost a match since the Lindenwood Open on Nov. 18. Miklus needed just 4:59 to record an 18-1 technical fall over Max Ihry, and improve to 16-3 on the season. With the 15-point win, Miklus now ranks tied-for-tenth all-time in program history for technical falls in a season with five, and tied-for-ninth for career technical falls with nine. FARGO, N.D. -- The Iowa State wrestling team (7-7, 2-4 Big 12) overcame a 20-3 deficit, winning the final five matches of the night to defeat North Dakota Sate (6-9, 0-6 Big 12) 21-20 on criteria. Heading to the heavyweight match, the Cardinal and Gold trailed 20-16. Redshirt senior Marcus Harrington pieced together a 10-2 major decision over Dan Stibral to bring the match score to 20-20. Harrington led 3-2 with under one minute remaining in the third period when he swung the match wide open. He took Stibral to his back, picking up a takedown and four-point near fall to take a 9-2 lead. He finished the match on top with 1:04 of riding time, earning one point and winning the match 10-2. The Cyclones won the dual on first criteria, most matches won, holding a 6-4 advantage over the Bison. How It Happened The five-bout streak was spurred by perhaps the biggest win of the night. Redshirt sophomore Brady Jennings was pitted against North Dakota State's, No. 21 Andrew Fogarty. Jennings was dominant in the match, never yielding a takedown and scoring on a pair of reversals and a takedown himself. He was in complete control on top, churning out 3:16 of riding time. Redshirt junior Danny Bush held off a late Dylan Urbach attack to defeat the NDSU grappler, 12-9. Following the match at 174 pounds, redshirt senior Dane Pestano pumped more fuel into Iowa State's comeback behind a 19-5 major decision against Cole Witzig. The Waimanalo, Hi., native racked up seven takedowns in the win at 184 pounds. At 197 pounds, redshirt freshman Sam Colbray brought the Cyclones to within striking distance. In their match, Colbray and Cordell Eaton traded escapes to begin the second and third periods. Colbray was dinged for stalling twice, giving up two points with under a minute to go in the third. He worked and got the necessary takedown to send the match to sudden victory. In the overtime period, Colbray solidified a 5-3 victory, earning the winning takedown. Redshirt freshman Jarrett Degen broke the seal for the Cyclones, picking up the lone ISU victory in the front half of the dual. He defeated NDSU's Kyle Gliva by 8-2 decision. The Belgrade, Mont., native scored two takedowns, pushed the pace to earn a point on a pair of Gliva stall calls and rode hard on top, racking up 1:11 of riding time in the victory. LANCASTER, Pa. -- The Bucknell wrestling team rolled to a 23-13 victory over Franklin & Marshall Friday night at Mayser Gym. The Bison took control of the dual early, winning five of the first six bouts to race out to what proved to be an insurmountable 17-3 lead. David Campbell (133) and Tyler Smith (141) set the tone, winning their bouts by major decision, while Drew Phipps put the exclamation mark on a commanding team effort by pinning his opponent. Campbell picked up his first major decision by downing Dan Martoccio, 10-2. The freshman scored two of his four takedowns in the third period and secured the point he needed to net four points for Bucknell on riding time. Smith, who was slotted No. 15 in the most recent Intermat rankings, then dispatched Brett Kulp, 14-3. Over the course of his winning streak, he racked up bonus points in 16 bouts, winning four by fall, four by technical fall and eight by major decision. After Smith's win, the Bison broke open the dual. First, Seth Hogue (149) held off a furious comeback bid by Wil Gil; after Gil forced overtime, Hogue scored a quick takedown in the sudden victory period to pull out a 13-11 win. Then, Christian Bassolino (157) edged Emmett LiCastri by a single point, 3-2, behind a third-period escape. D.J. Hollingshead (165) capped Bucknell's five-bout winning streak by downing Jacob Conners, 3-1, thanks to an early takedown and posting more than two minutes of riding time. Phipps pinned Steven Mercadante in 5:31 to stake the Bison a 23-6 advantage. At the time of his pin, his second of the 2017-18 campaign, he held an 11-1 lead. Phipps has now won five of his past seven bouts. The Bison (3-11, 2-5 EIWA) return to action on Sunday at 12 p.m. by taking on American in their final road dual of the season. PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The NC State wrestling team jumped out to a 17-0 lead, winning the first five bouts, and went on to a 23-9 win at Pitt Friday night. The Wolfpack (13-1, 3-0 ACC) won seven of the 10 matches, and also came away with a pair of upsets over ranked Panthers (2-9, 0-3). The ACC dual started at 149 pounds, and the Wolfpack won each of the five before the intermission to build a 17-0 lead at the break. #13 R-Sr. Beau Donahue got the dual started in exciting fashion. Pitt's Robert Lee got a takedown with eight seconds left to even the score 4-4, but Donahue got the escape just two seconds later and claimed the 5-4 win. #3 R-Fr. Hayden Hidlay scored his 13th bonus point win during his 17-0 season, as he recorded four takedowns en route to an 18-7 major decision over 2017 ACC Champion Taleb Rahmani at 157 pounds. R-Sr. Brian Hamann, down 2-0 to start the second period, got a two-point and then a four-point near fall in the second period and claimed a 7-5 win at 165 pounds. R-Fr. Daniel Bullard scored the second bonus point win of the night, as he got a takedown in all three periods and cruised to a 9-0 major decision at 174 pounds. #3 R-Sr. Pete Renda completed the sweep before intermission, with a 5-2 win at 184 pounds. Pitt picked up their first win at 197 pounds, but the Pack countered with an upset at 285 pounds. Sr. Michael Boykin, making his first dual start since November, scored both of the takedowns in the bout and took out #19 Ryan Solomon, 5-3. After Solomon tied it 3-3 with 20 seconds left, Boykin scored the winning takedown seconds later, and got his third ranked win this season. The Panthers notched back-to-back wins at 125 and 133 pounds but the dual was well in hand even after those results at 20-9 going into the final bout. The second upset came at 141 pounds, as R-Jr. Jamel Morris stepped into the lineup and bumped up a weight class and scored the upset over #19 Nick Zanetta. Morris was up 6-1 with the ride time clinched entering the third, but a flurry of action in the third pushed the final to 12-8. UP NEXT: The Wolfpack will return home to host the final three home duals of the 2017-18 season.
