Aho improved his record to 6-4 overall, 3-2 in dual matches. At 165 pounds, Zach Molitor picked up his first career dual match victory for the Bison and 10th win of the season defeating Chris Feist in a close 7-5 battle. Portland State (1-12) picked up their first win of the night at 174 pounds when senior Kalivas Karras defeated Matt Hermann in a close 3-2 decision. NDSU (2-3) came storming back with pins from Matt Wetterling at 184 pounds and Jacob Bryce at 197 pounds, giving the Bison a 19-3 lead. Wetterling's pin was his team-leading 14th of the year and his 19th win of the season. The victory for Bryce was his first career dual victory and also his first pin of the season. Mike Maresh continued the winning ways for the Bison defeating Steve Fittinger 13-4. Maresh is now perfect in his first four bouts of his career. At 125 pounds, Mike Meger matched Maresh with four points of his own, defeating Bricen Yakabe 12-5. 2. STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State rebounded from a tough loss to Minnesota by dominating 20th-ranked Cal Poly, 36-8, and Fresno State, 44-3, in front of 3,367 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena on Friday night. Coleman Scott started the double dual with a technical fall in the first match of the night. It was all OSU after that as the Cowboys won 14 of the 17 matches wrestled. "It was hard to tell how we responded," head coach John Smith said afterward. "I can give you that answer after we wrestle Missouri on Sunday. I did like the effort from Nathan Morgan and Zack Esposito wrestling better. I also like the fact that we scored bonus points and got to use different wrestlers. It was good to see Ethan Kyle get a win tonight." The highlight of the evening came in just the second match of the night when OSU's fourth-ranked Morgan met high school teammate third-ranked Darrell Vasquez of Cal Poly. Morgan got on the board first with a takedown in the first period. Morgan's lead was 3-1 heading into the third period. Morgan was aggressive from the top position riding Vasquez for much of the third period to assure him of a riding time point. With eight seconds left in the match, Vasquez escaped and got a takedown which sent the match into overtime. It was Morgan who showed the superior takedown skills in the sudden victory period by shooting a double leg takedown and securing the victory with 15 seconds left in the period. "He (Morgan) has been solid for us," Smith said. "This is just a rollover from the way he has been wrestling. Obviously, he let up with 10 seconds left, but it would have been easy to drop your head in overtime. He didn't and picked up the takedown to win the match. It was pleasing to see." Esposito put the Cowboys up 14-4 in the dual with Cal Poly with a first period fall over Jeff Owens. Kevin Ward and Johny Hendricks both followed with major decisions and Brandon Mason added a technical fall in 3:59 to put the Cowboys up 27-4. Jack Jensen added a decision and Steve Mocco closed out the dual with a fall to make the final score 36-8 over Cal Poly. The dual with Fresno State was uneventful as the Bulldogs forfeited three matches to Oklahoma State. Zack Esposito and Jake Rosholt recorded falls as OSU cruised to a 44-3 dual victory over Fresno State. It was the most dual points the Cowboys had scored this season. The Cowboys will return to action on Sunday when they travel to Columbia, Mo., to wrestle Missouri at 2 p.m. The dual will be televised live by CSTV or can be heard via the internet at okstate.com. 3. ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio wrestling team lost a Mid-American Conference dual to No. 23 Northern Illinois 29-9 Friday evening in the Convocation Center. The Bobcats (5-5, 1-1 MAC) got decisions from Terry Jackson at 133 pounds, Jake Frerichs at 157 and Brian Cesear at 184 for their nine points in the meet. The Huskies (5-4, 2-0 MAC) got wins from all five of their nationally ranked wrestlers - #19 Joe Sapp at heavyweight, #10 Pat Castillo at 125, #11 Josh Wooton at 141, #13 Mike Grimes at 149 and #20 Danny Burk at 174 - in addition to a pair of victories by Derick Hunsinger at 197 and Johnny Galloway at 165. The meet started with a 7-5 decision by Hunsinger over Ohio's Nick Terbay who was competing for the first time since injuring his knee on Dec. 29 and undergoing surgery on Jan. 4. The Bobcat junior from Dayton, Ohio, scored an early takedown and was leading 4-2 following a second-period escape but a three-point near fall in the third period sealed his defeat. "Nick went out there and took a bunch of shot early but got tired and ran out of gas," said Ohio head coach Joel Greenlee about his 197-pounder. "I'll take the blame on that one because we should have wrestled Larry (Reichard). I thought Nick had a good week of practice and maybe knee-wise he was ready to go out there but conditioning-wise he wasn't." In a close heavyweight bout, Sapp registered the first points with a reversal of Bobcat junior Marcus Adelman with only six seconds remaining in the second period. Adelman, the preseason MAC heavyweight favorite from Alliance, Ohio, managed an escape in the third period but a takedown by Sapp with 11 seconds left gave the 19th-ranked heavyweight in the country a 4-1 victory. At 125 pounds, Castillo showed why he is ranked 10th in the nation by scoring a 13-4 major decision over Ohio sophomore Caleb Metcalf (Waterville, Ohio). The Huskie sophomore was leading 5-0 before performing a takedown-and-release routine for the duration of the third period. The Bobcats finally got on the board with a 2-0 decision by Jackson at 133 pounds. After a scoreless first period, the redshirt freshman from Uhrichsville, Ohio, managed to ride NIU junior Andy Hiatt for the entire second period. An escape early in the third period gave him his first point and riding time resulted in a 2-0 decision. "I knew going into the match that (Hiatt) was tough because he placed at Midlands but I just went out there and got in his face and wrestled my match," said Jackson, who improved to 7-4 this season, including 5-0 in duals and 2-0 in the conference. "I planned on beating him on my feet but unfortunately I didn't get a takedown in the first period. In the second period, I just rode him out, stayed tough on him and beat him mentally." At 141 pounds, Wooton took it to Ohio redshirt freshman Albert Madsen (Strongsville, Ohio). The defending MAC champ led 8-1 following a second-period reversal and two-point near fall. He recorded two more takedowns in the third for the eventual 14-2 major decision. Grimes followed that up with another major decision for the Huskies in the next match. In a feisty contest against Bobcat junior Aaron Gomoll (Bay Village, Ohio), the 13th-ranked 149-pounder led 5-0 before Gomoll scored an escape late in the second period. A series of takedowns and releases in the third resulted in the 12-4 final score. In his first match in exactly six weeks, Frerichs bounced back from a knee injury to defeat Huskie 157-pounder Kalen Knull. The Ohio redshirt freshman from Uniontown, Ohio, used a three-point near fall in the second period and a reversal early in the third to cruise to a 6-2 decision. "It felt really good to be back on the mat," said Frerichs, who upped his record to 8-3 and 6-1 in duals. "I thought I should have got a takedown in the first period but every shot I hit was out of bounds. I gave up a stupid reversal at the very end but I've been out for so long that I was just happy to be back on the mat." At 165 pounds, Bobcat true freshman Kent Smith (Bowling Green, Ohio) suffered a 21-6 technical fall to Galloway, who earned the bonus points with a late takedown, two-point near fall and riding time. In Ohio's final shot at defeating one of NIU's ranked wrestlers, sophomore 174-pounder Ryan Knapp (McConnelsville, Ohio) recorded an early takedown and was tied with Burk at 4-4 in the second period when both grapplers took a shot at the same time and knocked heads. The collision opened a cut above Knapp's right eye that required stitches. After waiting for over 15 minutes to see if the procedure could be performed just off the mat, Greenlee decided to have Knapp injury default when swelling became obvious. "Right above his eyebrow, he split about a three-inch gash in his head," Greenlee said about the injury. "It was pretty deep but I thought if we could stitch it up right away, he could wrestle. After about 10 minutes, though, it became too sore and swollen." In the night's final match, Cesear improved his record to 15-8 and 8-2 in duals with a 6-3 decision over Huskie 184-pounder Nick McClone. The junior from Amherst, Ohio, scored an early takedown but gave up a reversal late in the first period. After an illegal hold call gave him a 3-2 lead in the second period, Cesear registered an escape and takedown in the third to pull out the win. The Bobcats will next travel to Ashland, Ohio, for the 17th Annual Wendy's Big Classic Duals on Sunday. Ohio will face Cleveland State at 10 a.m., Lock Haven at 2 p.m. and host Ashland at 4 p.m. in the eight-team event. Ohio 9, Northern Illinois 29 197 - Derick Hunsinger (NIU) dec. 5. The top-ranked Golden Gopher wrestling team (13-0, 1-0) won seven of 10 matches in a 24-11 victory against No. 16 Northwestern (5-3, 0-1) on Friday night at the Sports Pavilion. Minnesota improved to 13-0 on the year and extended their winning streak to eight matches over the Wildcats. The Wildcats jumped ahead 3-0 after eighth-ranked John Velez earned a 6-0 decision against junior Andrew Domingues at 125 pounds. Velez jumped ahead for good with a takedown and near fall with 30 seconds left in the first period. Velez added a second- period escape and then rode Domingues the entire third period. Minnesota responded with five straight victories, including third-ranked Mack Reiter's 5-2 decision over Daniel Quintela at 133 pounds. Reiter jumped ahead 2-0 with a takedown thirty seconds into the match. He added another early in the second period as he improved to 20-2 on the year. The Golden Gophers led 7-3 after 19th-ranked Manuel Rivera scored a 14-3 major decision against Marty Gould at 141 pounds. Rivera led 6-2 after two periods, but blew the match open with a reversal and a near fall in the third period. Gould was wrestling in place of sixth-ranked Ryan Lang who sat out the match with a leg injury. After jumping from No. 7 to No. 2 in the rankings this past week, true freshman Dustin Schlatter put on a clinic in a 17-1 technical fall against Jimmy Kim at 149 pounds. Schlatter needed just six seconds to take a 2-0 lead with a takedown. He then scored three near falls to take an 11-0 first-period lead. Schlatter added two more takedowns in the second to end the match in 4:41. He is now 27-1 on the year and will face top-ranked Ty Eustice of Iowa on Sunday afternoon. Schlatter's older brother, C.P., followed with a 9-4 decision against Greg Hagel at 157 pounds. Schlatter led 4-1 in the first period, but Hagel cut the lead to one with a reversal. Schlatter responded with a second-period takedown to collect the win. He is now 24-4 on the year. In the third period, Tamillow was penalized a pair of points for clasping his hands. With the win, Kish improved to 23-3 overall and 10-3 in duals. After Northwestern's Matt Delguyd defeated Justin Bronson, 13-2 at 197 pounds, top- ranked heavyweight Cole Konrad defeated ninth-ranked Dustin Fox, 4-0. Konrad's first- period takedown proved to be the difference as he improved to 25-0 on the year. Konrad has now won 54 of his last 55 matches. 6. PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Redshirt freshman John Murphy and sophomore Greg Goidosik picked up their first career dual-meet victories as the 18th-ranked Michigan State wrestling team (2-2) crushed Pittsburgh, 28-9, at Fitzgerald Field House Friday night. "It was a heck of a dual," head coach Tom Minkel said. "It was a real team effort and a good way to start off the second half of our schedule, especially after the long layoff we have had." The dual got started at 197 pounds where senior Jeff Clemens gave the Spartans an early lead, defeating Mike Heist, 5-1. Clemens notched two takedowns: one on a counter as time expired in the second period, and another in the closing seconds of the third. The Bellbrook, Ohio native improves to 13-8 on the season and picks up his second straight dual-meet victory. Max Lossen took the second match of the night, 5-2, in a hard-fought battle with Lou Thomas at 285 pounds. With the score tied midway through third, Lossen looked to be in trouble, but came away on top in a scramble to take a two-point lead and cruise to victory. Lossen now has a record of 10-9 on the year, and like Clemens, claimed his second consecutive dual-meet win against the Panthers. Fourth-ranked Nick Simmons extended his streak of not giving up a point to seven matches as he pinned Brad Gentzle at the 3:22 mark of their 125-pound bout. Simmons notched his team-leading ninth fall of the year by rolling Gentzle up in a cradle early in the second period. Simmons is now 19-0 on the season with four dual-meet victories. Despite taking an early 5-0 lead, Jeff Wimberley could not hold on against Pitt's Mike Ciotti, and dropped the 133-pound match, 12-5. In the most anticipated match of the night, No. 4 Andy Simmons edged No. 8 Ron Tarquinio in thrilling fashion, 2-0. Both wrestlers had their opportunities in scrambles near the edge of the mat, but neither scored a takedown, and Simmons won on an escape and a riding-time point. The victory is Simmons' 21st of the season and he is now a perfect 4-0 in dual meets. Andy Simmons is now only second to his brother Nick in team shutouts with six. Darren McKnight dropped a controversial decision by fall to the Panther's Joey Ecklof at 149 pounds. The score was tied late in the third period when Ecklof countered a McKnight takedown and took the Spartan captain to his back. Time expired and the official called a fall simultaneously, and Pittsburgh narrowed the MSU lead to 15-9. "I really feel bad for Darren," Minkel said. "He wrestled his heart out and was in control of the match the entire time. He just got a bad break." Tony Greathouse put momentum back on Michigan State's side with his first dual-meet victory since Thanksgiving weekend. Greathouse shutout Sean Richmond, 4-0, tallying an escape and a takedown in the third period. Greathouse is now 2-2 in dual meets and 11-7 overall. The upset of the night came at the hands of Goidosik in the 165-pound bout. Making his 2005-06 dual-meet debut for State, Goidosik knocked off No. 14 Justin Nestor, 7-5, notching two early takedowns and using the clock to his advantage throughout the match. "That was the best first period I have ever seen Goidosik wrestle in his three years here," Minkel said. No. 7 R.J. Boudro put on a takedown clinic early in his match with Nick Padezan, and rolled to a major-decision victory, 13-3, at 174 pounds. Boudro notched five takedowns in the first two periods to improve his record to 16-3 overall and 3-1 in dual meets. The major decision is Boudro's sixth of 2005-06. Murphy capped off the night in winning fashion for the Green and White, topping Kyle Deliere in his first-career dual meet, 5-3. Murphy took Deliere down early in the first period and notched a reversal in the third to improve to 14-8 on the season. The Spartans now head home, where they will square off with No. 17 Edinboro at Jenison Field House on Sunday, Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. 197- Jeff Clemens dec. Mike Heist 5-1 MSU, 3-0 285- Max Lossen dec. 23. Wartburg goes after a piece of history Friday, Jan. 20, as No. 3 ranked Luther College of Decorah visits Knights Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. dual against the top-ranked Knights. A win for head coach Jim Miller's team would mark the program's 100th consecutive dual victory against Iowa Conference competition. Buena Vista University was the last league team to knock off the Orange and Black, doing so by an 18-16 score in the final dual meet of the 1993-94 season. Friday's meeting with the Norse marks the second time in five days the two league rivals have met on the mat. Wartburg rolled past Luther 35-6 in the semifinals of the 2006 National Wrestling Coaches Association/Cliff Keen Division III National Duals at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls Jan. 15. Wartburg follows up Friday's showdown with two contests in the UW-Stevens Point Pointer Duals Saturday, Jan. 21. The Knights will take on the host Pointers, ranked No. 22 in the recent NWCA/Brute-Adidas Division III top 30, at 4 p.m. and UW-Oshkosh at 6 p.m. in Quandt Fieldhouse on UW-Stevens Point's campus. Miller of Cedar Falls each racked up impressive major decisions as well. Junior heavyweight Blake Gillis of Spencer put an exclamation point on the largest victory in the five meetings between the two mat rivals in the finals of the National Duals by stopping Augsburg's Andrew Neumann on a technical fall in five minutes. Wartburg reached the final by notching its 99th consecutive dual win against Iowa Conference competition with a 35-6 victory over Luther in the semifinals on Sunday. Senior 125-pounder Tyler Hubbard of Blue Springs, Mo., junior 197-pounder Ryan Phillips of Burlington and Gillis each gained falls in the win over the Norse. The Knights added a 51-0 win over Simpson in the quarterfinals on Saturday, Jan. 14, producing six bonus-point wins. Hinschberger was named the conference's Male Athlete of the Week Jan. 16 due to his Outstanding Wrestler award at the National Duals. He's the fourth Knights wrestler to earn the league's top male athlete honor this season, joining Hubbard, Gillis and freshman 133-pounder Zach McKray of Iowa City…The Orange and Black kept firm hold on their No. 1-ranking in the recent NWCA/Brute-Adidas top 30, released Jan. 16. Four individuals, Hubbard (125), Hinschberger (141), Miller (197) and Gillis (285), enter the weekend ranked No. 1 at their respective weights. McKray rounds out Wartburg's ranked individuals, coming in at No. 8 at 133…A sweep of this week's dual action would mark the third consecutive season of 20-or-more dual wins for the Knights. Wartburg's record in that span is 68-4. Next up: Wartburg makes a trip to Simpson College in Indianola for a dual against the Storm Tuesday, Jan. 25. The Knights return home to host their section of the 2006 Iowa Conference Duals Saturday, Jan. 28.
  24. Cowboys Host Pair of West Coast Schools Oklahoma State returns to the mat on Friday evening when it hosts Cal Poly and Fresno State with the first dual set to begin at 6 p.m. The Cowboys are coming off of a runner-up showing at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals after losing to Minnesota, 21-14, in the championship match. The loss snapped a 30-match dual winning streak for the Cowboys and are 9-1 on the season. The Cowboys are a combined 39-0 against Cal Poly and Fresno State. OSU has won all 22 meetings with Cal Poly and is 17-0 against the Bulldogs. The Cowboys won both duals last year handily defeating the Mustangs 32-9 and Fresno State 34-6. Scouting the Mustangs Cal Poly comes into the dual with a 7-2 record and a No. 20 national ranking. The Mustangs won the Nebraska Duals back in December, including a 21-19 victory over Nebraska who recently finished third at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals. Cal Poly is led by third-ranked Darrell Vasquez. Vasquez comes into the contest with a 13-1 record. Vasquez will meet his former high school teammate Nathan Morgan in the 133-pound bout. The Mustangs also boast No. 16 Ryan Halsey at 184. The Mustangs have been battling injuries and will be without 10th-ranked Chad Mendez at 125. CPU is also short at 197 where its top two wrestlers are out with injuries. Scouting the Bulldogs Fresno State comes into the dual with a 3-3 record. FSU is coming off of a 36-10 loss to Cal-State Bakersfield on Wednesday. The Bulldogs forfeited three weights and were forced to take an injury default in another. Fresno State currently does not have any wrestlers ranked in the individual national rankings. FSU did compete in the Reno Tournament of Champions where it finished 15th out of 27 teams. Oklahoma State took the team title of the event. A Gopher in the Side Oklahoma State has dominated collegiate wrestling since the NCAA started conducting a championship in 1928. The Cowboys have been even more dominating of late winning the last three NCAA titles and compiling a 101-7 record over the last six seasons. There has been one team that has continually stuck out and that is Minnesota. The Gophers have handed OSU four of those seven losses and have won six of the last nine meetings in the series. Oklahoma State still leads the all-time series at 16-8, but Minnesota is closing the gap. Bedlam Revisited Kevin Ward enjoyed wrestling against Bedlam rival Oklahoma during the 2004-05 season. He went 3-0 against Oklahoma's Charles Jones, including a 13-2 major decision. Jones will return to Stillwater, but this time he is donning the blue and red singlet of Fresno State. Ward will take on Jones again in the 157-pound match. Freshmen Become Sophomores Head coach John Smith made a decision last winter to pull two freshmen out of redshirt because the Cowboys were struggling at both 125 and 133. Coleman Scott and Nathan Morgan both became Big 12 champions later on that year, while Scott went on to finish eighth at the NCAA Championships at 125. The freshmen have become sophomores and have turned into two of the better wrestlers at their weight class in the country. Scott recently defeated ninth-ranked Paul Donahoe of Nebraska and avenged an earlier loss to Arizona State's sixth-ranked Jeremy Mendoza. Morgan has the best record on the team at 18-1 and is ranked second by the NWCA/Intermat Individual Rankings at 133 after defeating fourth-ranked Mack Reiter of Minnesota.
