On Sunday, the third-ranked Fighting Illini wrestling team stayed perfect by defeating the Ohio State Buckeyes, 27-12 at Columbus, Ohio. The Illini improve to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten. The win also marks nine in a row over the Buckeyes. Since head coach Mark Johnson's arrival to Illinois, the Illini have posted a 9-1 record over OSU. The dual started at 141 pounds and saw junior All-American Cassio Pero (Chicago Heights, Ill.) post an 8-2 decision against T.J. Enright. Pero was in control of the match from the beginning and scored a takedown in every period. In the 149-pound bout, Troy Tirapelle (Clovis, Calif.) dropped a heartbreaking decision to J Jaggers, 9-7. In the first period, Jaggers scored a takedown to get an early lead against the Illini redshirt-freshman. In the second, the Buckeyes' eighth-ranked wrestler extended his lead by scoring on an escape, a takedown, and a three-point nearfall, but Tirapelle scored on a reversal at the end of the period to keep the match within reach. In the third period, Tirapelle came out with an escape and a takedown, but even adding a late takedown wasn't enough to recover from the deficit. At 157, top-ranked Alex Tirapelle (Clovis, Calif.) added to Illinois' score by winning a major decision over Steve Sommer, 13-5. With no score in the first period, the Illini's senior All-American overwhelmed Sommer with six takedowns in the win. Eighth-ranked Mike Poeta (Highwood, Ill.) won his 165-pound match over Nathaniel Augustson via major decision, 14-5. The Illini's redshirt-freshman used his speed and strength to control the Buckeye senior and never let him score a takedown. At 174, Ohio State's Blake Maurer evened the season score against Donny Reynolds (Frankfort, Ill.) by pinning him in 2:44 of the first period. The two last met at the Las Vegas Invite in December. The dual picked up at 184 as Pete Friedl (Orland Park, Ill.) edged Alex Picazo, 8-7. With the Illini senior All-American up 5-4 entering the third period, Picazo tied the score on an escape. After Friedl scored a takedown, Picazo tied the match again by scoring on a reversal as time expired. With 1:29 of riding time added to his score, the fourth-ranked Illini walked away the victor. At 197, Tyrone Byrd (Clinton, Ill.) won a decision over Corey Morrison, 6-1. The ninth-ranked Illini senior kept the pressure on Morrison by scoring a takedown in the first period and adding a two-point near fall in the second to control the match. In his second overtime in two days, heavyweight Matt Weight (Batavia, Ill.) dropped a decision against Kirk Nail, 4-2. With Weight down a point to start the third period, he scored two points on a reversal. Nail, then, tied the score right away with an escape to send the match into overtime. In the extra period, Nail scored a takedown with 14 seconds left to seal the win for the Buckeyes. The highlight of the day saw All-American Kyle Ott pin Anner Arroyo with 36 seconds left in the first period. Ott (an Ohio native from Huber Heights) not only gave family and friends something to scream about, he sealed the victory for the Illini with the pin. With a 2-0 lead in the first period, the Illini senior used his explosive quickness to overwhelm the Buckeye freshman who was competing in his first match. At 133, Gabe Flores (Madera, Calif.) finally posted a Big Ten victory by winning a major decision over Reece Humphrey, 11-2. The Illini return to Huff Gym for a Big Ten showdown against fourth-ranked Michigan on Friday, Feb. 2. Pins by the only two upperclassmen in the lineup propelled the top-ranked Golden Gopher wrestling team to a 25-16 win against No. 9 Penn State on Sunday in University Park, Pa. Senior Matt Nagel and junior Cole Konrad registered the falls as Minnesota won six of 10 matches. The Golden Gophers are now 16-0 on the year and 4-0 in the Big Ten. The Golden Gophers jumped ahead early as fifth-ranked C.P. Schlatter claimed an 8-3 decision against No. 13 Nathan Galloway at 157 pounds. Schlatter led 3-2 after two periods, but blew the match open with a pair of third-period takedowns. He is 27-4 on the year with a 14-1 dual meet mark. Ranked ninth in the country, Nagel followed with a pin against 15th-ranked David Erwin in just 50 seconds at 165 pounds. Nagel scored the early takedown and put Erwin on his back to claim his eighth pin of the season. His win gave the Golden Gophers an early 9-0 lead. The Nittany Lions roared back with three straight wins to take a 10-9 lead. 16th-ranked James Yonushonis entered the 174-pound match with a 0-2 record against eighth-ranked Gabriel Dretsch. He turned the tables on Drestch in a 5-4 win. A third-period takedown proved to be the difference as he broke a 3-3 tie. At 184 pounds, eighth-ranked Roger Kish dominated top-ranked Eric Bradley, but was unable to finish four quality chances in a 3-2 loss. After a scramble late in the second period, Bradley scored the takedown to take 3-0 lead. Kish cut the lead to one with a third-period escape and a penalty point on Bradley for stalling, but was unable to take the lead. It was Kish's second career 3-2 loss against the Nittany Lion senior. Penn State took its first lead after sixth-ranked Philip Davis earned a 13-1 major decision against sophomore Mitch Kuhlman at 197 pounds. Scoreless after the first period, Davis dominated with a second-period takedown and a late third-period near fall. Minnesota responded with four wins in the final five matches starting with top-ranked Konrad's pin of 18th-ranked Joel Edwards in 1:44 at heavyweight. Konrad pinned Edwards in just 36 seconds at last year's Big Ten Championships. Today, Konrad scored the early takedown and wasted little time in earning his 34th career pin, good for sixth place in school history. In the only match featuring unranked wrestlers, redshirt freshman Travis Lang gave Minnesota an 18-10 lead with a 7-6 decision against Tim Haas at 125 pounds. Trailing 5 -4 after a wild first period, Lang opened the second period with a two-point reversal. Tied at six through three periods, Lang was awarded one point for riding time to earn the win. Fourth-ranked Mack Reiter nearly clinched the dual with a 5-3 decision against Jake Strayer at 133 pounds. In control throughout, Reiter broke a scoreless tie with a reversal to start the second period. He added a late third-period takedown to improve to 23-2 on the year. Trailing 21-10, Penn State needed two pins to upset the Golden Gophers. At 141, eighth- ranked DeWitt Driscoll made things interesting with a pin of No. 15 Manuel Rivera. After Rivera took a 2-0 lead with a first-period takedown, Driscoll scored the reversal and put Rivera on his back. He claimed the pin in 2:19. Rivera entered the match with four straight wins, including a pair against top-12 ranked wrestlers. The Nittany Lion momentum ended there as top-ranked Dustin Schlatter sealed the Minnesota win with an 11-0 major decision against 10th-ranked James Woodall at 149 pounds. A true freshman, Schlatter dominated the fifth-year senior. Leading 3-0 in the second period, he scored the takedown and added a near fall. A late takedown earned Schlatter the bonus point for the major decision. After sitting out Friday's dual against Ohio State with the flu, Schlatter returned to improved to 29-1 on the eyar. The Golden Gophers return home next weekend to host No. 24 Wisconsin on Friday night and No. 13 Indiana on Sunday. Both matches will be held at the Sports Pavilion. ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior/junior Mark Moos (Lorain, Ohio/St. Edward HS) and fifth-year senior captain Ryan Churella (Northville, Mich./Novi HS) recorded falls to lead the No.4-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team to a 27-12 victory over No. 18 Michigan State on Sunday (Jan. 29) at Cliff Keen Arena. Wrestling in front of a capacity 1,850-person crowd, the Wolverines won seven individual matches to claim their third Big Ten Conference win of the season. The dual meet got off to a quick start as the two squads traded first-period falls at the opening two weights. The Spartans' fourth-ranked Nick Simmons built up an five-point advantage before turning freshman Michael Watts (Riverton, Utah/Riverton HS) to put six points on the board for MSU. Moos neutralized the score less than a minute later, using a half nelson to pin Jeff Wimberley just 45 seconds into the 133-pound bout and earn himself his second fall of the weekend in a combined 1:17 of time. The marquee match of the afternoon came at 141 pounds, where fifth-ranked junior/sophomore Josh Churella (Northville, Mich./Novi HS) rallied from an initial deficit to defeat fourth-ranked Andy Simmons 4-2. The Spartan opened the scoring early in the second period, using a double armbar to turn Churella for two points. Churella immediately scrambled to his feet and only moments later took control of the match with a single-leg takedown. The Wolverine put a leg in and rode Simmons for the remainder of the period, a trend he continued throughout the entire third frame, accumulating 2:55 in riding time advantage for his seventh straight win. The U-M middle weights continued to extend the Wolverines' advantage as junior/sophomore Eric Tannenbaum (Naperville, Ill./North HS) and sophomore/freshman Steve Luke (Massillon, Ohio/Perry HS) earned back-to-back decisions at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively, to give Michigan a nine-point lead at halftime. Tannenbaum connected on his patented single-leg takedown three times in the match, including twice in the opening period, en route to a 9-3 win over 15th-ranked Darren McKnight. McKnight scored a reversal early in the third period to keep the score close, but the Wolverine responded late with a takedown in the last 30 seconds and 1:57 in riding time. Luke quickly took control against Tony Greathouse in the following match, scoring on a fireman's carry just eight seconds in and immediately sucking the Spartan wrestler back to the mat for three back points. He countered a single-leg shot by Greathouse late in the second to spin around and earn his second takedown, giving him a four-point advantage heading into the final period. Greathouse proved tough on top as Luke was ridden out for the entire final frame but held on for a 7-4 victory. Top-ranked Ryan Churella kept the Wolverines' momentum rolling after the break with his sixth fall of the season, pinning Greg Goidosik at the 4:54 mark. Churella dominated the bout from the opening whistle, scoring a takedown midway through the first frame and using leg turk and tilt combinations to score 11 back points and lock up the necessary points for a technical fall. The Wolverine captain kept working, however, and applied the half nelson to successfully push Goidosik to his back just seconds before the second period ended. After MSU narrowed the Michigan advantage with wins at 174 and 184 pounds, sophomore/freshman Casey White (Commerce, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) swung the momentum back into the Wolverines' hand with a gutsy 9-5 decision over Jeff Clemens at 197. With the score locked up at 3-3 early in the third period, the two wrestlers scrambled on the mat as White tried to fight off a Clemens single-leg shot. As the Spartan was awarded the takedown, White writhed in pain on the mat, and subsequently used nearly all of his allotted injury time. When action resumed, the Wolverine forced Clemens into another scramble situation and ended up on top to again tie the score. Already holding riding-time advantage, White put a cap on the victory -- his first at Cliff Keen Arena -- by using a spadle to turn Clemens for three extra points at the buzzer. Fifth-year senior captain Greg Wagner (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider HS) extended his season winning streak to 18 matches with a solid 12-5 decision against Max Lossen at heavyweight. For the first time in eight matches, Wagner allowed points scored against him as he lost position in the first period to give up a reversal and two-point near fall. The Wolverine rallied back, scoring three more takedowns and a pair of escapes to put a cap on the Wolverines' win. The Wolverines will hit the road next weekend for Big Ten duals against Illinois and Purdue. SLIPPERY ROCK, PA -- The Bloomsburg University wrestling team took second at the 2006 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships including three individual titles. The Huskies finished second to 17th-ranked Edinboro, who finished with 146 team points, in comparison to Bloomsburg's 113.5 points. Lock Haven was third with 91 team points. Mike Sees (Northumberland/Northumberland), Brad Forbes (Downingtown/Downingtown), and Mike Spaid (Boyertown/Boyertown) led the team, winning titles at their respective weight classes. At 125 pounds, Sees won his first championships after finishing second in 2005. In the first round, he won by fall over Kutztown's Cory Weiss and used an 8-5 decision over Lock Haven's14th-ranked Obe Blanc to move into the title match. In the finals, he faced off against first-seeded Ricky Deubel, winning a 7-5 overtime decision to win the title. Forbes also won his first individual title at 141 pounds, defeating Edinboro's Rick McLaughlin in the finals, 4-3. In his first match, he won an 11-2 major decision over Brett Martinez of Kutztown University. In the semifinals, he used a 4-3 victory over Clarion's Greg Lewis to move into the title match. In the heavyweight bracket, Spaid also improved upon his second-place finish in 2005 winning his first PSAC title. Spaid won 13-0 over Slippery Rock's Matt Burkholder and recorded a pin over Richard Brooks to advance to the championship bout. In the finals, he won a 6-0 decision over Shippenburg's Jake Lininger. At 174 pounds, Jim Bertulis (Aston/Garnett Valley) took second for the second year in a row after finishing runner-up at the 165-pound weight class last year. In the first round, Bertulis won a 4-3 decision over East Stroudsburg. Bertulis then got another decision win, 7-5, in the semifinals to advance to the title match where he forfeited for medical reasons. Freshman Ricky Donald (Millville/Bloomsburg) finished third at 133 pounds in his first PSAC Championships. In the first round, he won a 6-4 decision before falling to eventual champion, Shawn Bunch, 10-3, of Edinboro. In the third-place bout, he won a 7-3 decision over Kutztown's Brandon Clemmer. Jesse Hasseman (Franklin, IN/Franklin) also recorded a third-place finish for the Huskies at the 197-pound weight class. Hasseman, who finished fourth at 184 pounds last year, won an 11-5 decision over Lock Haven's Tom Kocher to advance to the semifinals. In the semifinal bout, first-seeded Corey Jacoby defeated Hasseman by technical fall, 16-1. Hasseman faced off against East Stroudsburg's Sean McCracken in the third-place bout where he won, 4-2. Aric Fuhrman (Spring Grove/Delone Catholic) and Frank Beasley (Oden, IL/Centralia) posted fourth-place finishes for the Huskies at the 157-pound and 165-pound weight classes, respectively, while Nate Shirk (Middleburg/Middleburg) finished fifth at 184 pounds. The Huskies will host two Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) matches next weekend. Bloomsburg will face off against Clarion on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. before wrestling Cleveland State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Tyler Rhodes' 2-1 victory over Israel Silva in the heavyweight class lifted the University of Northern Iowa's wrestling team to a 19-18 victory over the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Saturday. Immediately following that dual, the Mocs dispensed of Cumberland University, 58-0. Rhodes and Silva were tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation, but Rhodes earned an extra point for riding time to claim the one-point victory. The Panthers, ranked No. 22 nationally, forfeited the next match at 125 pounds for the final margin. Overall, UNI, now 3-7-1, claimed six of the 10 matches on the night, four of which were decided by one point. "We lost four matches by one point," UTC Head Coach Joe Seay said. "Some of those could have gone either way. I thought we wrestled very solidly for most of the night. We had a chance to win the match, but we didn't pull them out. I told our guys afterwards, if they do that at the conference tournament, they won't go to Nationals. It's that simple." The two nationally-ranked wrestlers lived up to their billing for each team. UTC's Matt Keller, ranked as high as No. 6 at 133 pounds, began the match with a pin of Chris Helgeson to give the Mocs a quick 6-0 lead. It was the 11th consecutive victory for Keller and his eighth pin of the season. UNI's Nick Baima, ranked as high as No. 7 at 165 pounds, moved up to 174 for this match, and scored a 16-5 major decision over UTC's T.J. Sayers. Baima's win snapped a 9-9 tie and gave the Panthers the lead for good at 13-9. Aaron Martin and John Davis were the other winners for the Mocs, now 11-7-1. Martin outpointed Colby Goetsch 9-6 at 149, and Davis defeated Dan Dunning 5-1 at 184. The Panthers also earned team points from C.J. Ettelson, Chris Bitetto, Moza Fay and Andrew Anderson. Ettelson edged Michael Keefe 9-8 at 141, Bitetto outscored Jake Yost 3-2 at 157, Fay was a 5-2 winner over Justin Otis and Anderson got past Lloyd Rogers 6-5 at 197. In the Cumberland dual, the Bulldogs, an NAIA program, forfeited four matches. The Mocs used five pins and a major decision for the shutout. UTC claimed a 57-0 win over Cumberland last season. Winning by fall for the Mocs were Martin (149), Wayne French (157), Kyle McKee (184), Zach Tramel (285) and Maldonado (125). Daniel Peterson scored a 16-6 major over Trey Myers at 165. UTC hosts another twin dual next Saturday at Maclellan Gym. CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Three Army wrestlers picked up major decision victories as the Black Knights rolled past Harvard, 30-10, Saturday at the Malkin Athletic Center. Army, who defeated Brown earlier in the day, ups its record to 7-3-2 overall and remains unblemished (5-0) against EIWA opponents, while Harvard falls to 1-5 (0-2 EIWA). Patrick Simpson began the Black Knights' run of major decision wins with a 13-4 verdict against Matt Button at 149 pounds. Simpson, the team's senior captain, ran his record to 24-5 on the season with the win. Senior Chad Marzec picked up a 12-4 major decision opposite Joe Bechtold in the 174-pound bout, while fellow classmate Charles Martin scored his major decision triumph with a 10-2 verdict over Billy Colgan at 197 pounds. Jon Anderson (165 pounds) and Luke Calvert (184) picked up wins via decision for the Black Knights. Anderson, who is now 17-4 on the year, downed Mike Baria, 10-4, while Calvert tripped Louis Caputo, 7-4, for his 20th win of the season. Army began the match with a 12-0 lead after Harvard forfeited the 125- and 133-pound bouts. The Black Knights hold a commanding 19-9 lead versus Harvard in the all-time series. "I thought our guys bounced back from this morning's match and wrestled quite well," remarked Army head coach Chuck Barbee. "I was proud of the way Luke (Calvert) went out and competed in his bout. We are continuing to improve as the season progresses.." BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Ohio wrestling team easily defeated Ithaca and Delaware State but lost a Mid-American Conference dual to Buffalo on Saturday at UB's Alumni Arena. Against the host Bulls, Ohio got wins from sophomore Caleb Metcalf (Waterville, Ohio) at 125 pounds and redshirt freshman Albert Madsen (Strongsville, Ohio) at 141. Metcalf began the meet by pinning Buffalo's Evan Veney with 34 seconds remaining in the opening period. After redshirt freshman Terry Jackson (Uhrichsville, Ohio) lost a 3-1 decision to Mark Budd - the 13th-ranked 133-pounder in the country - Madsen pulled out a 6-2 decision over Cliff Smith to give the Bobcats an early 9-3 lead. The Bulls (8-3, 1-1 MAC) took over from there, however, by winning the final seven matches to claim the 25-9 conference victory. It marked their first defeat of Ohio since a 25-14 win during the 1996-97 season, snapping a streak of eight straight losses to the Bobcats. Ohio rebounded, though, with a 25-15 victory over traditional Division III power Ithaca. Metcalf again started the meet with a pin, this time over Macario Alvarez just 1:35 into the match. Jackson then followed that up with a pin of his own against Tim Gammons at the 3:43 mark of the 133-pound match. Then, sophomore Frank Brown (Westerville, Ohio) delivered a 4-1 decision over Lance Dolson at the 141 spot and junior 149-pounder Aaron Gomoll (Bay Village, Ohio) posted a 10-4 win over Mike Toscano to give the Bobcats a commanding 18-0 advantage. After Ithaca (6-6) won the next three matches to make it 18-9, junior Brian Cesear (Amherst, Ohio) won a 6-3 decision over Robert Stubbs at 184 pounds to give Ohio a 12-point cushion with just two matches left. Ithaca's Nick Calandrino cut that gap in half by pinning 197-pound redshirt freshman Larry Reichard (New Albany, Ohio) but junior heavyweight Marcus Adelman (Alliance, Ohio) sealed the Bobcat win with an 8-0 major decision over Tyler Daffine in the final match. Ohio (8-8, 1-2 MAC) finished off the day with a 51-0 pasting of Delaware State, who only had six wrestlers competing. The Hornets (0-14) forfeited the 125, 133, 157 and 174 contests and suffered an injury default at 184. Collegeville, Minn. -- The St. Cloud State wrestling team enjoyed several outstanding efforts at the North Country Open on Saturday, Jan. 28, in Collegeville. SCSU was led by Nick Wasche at 125-pounds, who placed second at the tournament. Wasche completed the day with a 3-1 record and lost to Mark Johnson of Dickinson State in the finals by a score of 19-9. On the path to the title bout, Wasche beat Cory Johnston of Dickinson State by a fall at 5:41 and he also beat #2 seed Tim Thompson of host St. John's by a score of 11-5 in the semi-finals. Wasche came into the meet unseeded in the brackets. Also at 125-pounds, SCSU's Justin Lebahn was 1-2. At 133-pounds, Brent Johnson was 2-2 on the day and Matt Jackson was 0-2 on the day. At 141-pounds, Shad Tappe went 0-2 and Tom Messerli charted a 1-2 record at 149-pounds for the Huskies. In action at 157-pounds, Shane Tappe ended with a fifth place finish at the North Country. He charted a 6-2 win over Jamie Garcia of Dickinson State in the fifth place match. He also notched a 6-0 win over #3 seed Brad Nagel of Mary. On the day, Shane Tappe went 4-2 at 157-pounds. Nate Schut and Tom Anderson both marked 2-2 record at 165-pounds. At 174-pounds, Jason Moore advanced to the semi-finals where he lost to Gabe Harry of Dickinson State by a 4-2 score. He collected a fifth place finish at the Open with a default win over unattached Chris Moran. On the day, Moore posted a 4-2 record. Also at 174-pounds, Adam Hill was 1-2. At 184-pounds, Neil Russell gained a 2-2 record and Jario Sandoval was 1-2. SCSU's squad at the North Country was completed by Brad Nowak, who notched a 0-2 record at the heavyweight spot.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The 19th-ranked Navy wrestling team won 19-of-20 matches in cruising to two dual-meet victories over a pair of ACC opponents on Saturday afternoon. In the first meet of the day, Navy dominated North Carolina State, 38-0, before breezing past North Carolina, 41-4, in the nightcap. The wins move Navy's record to 11-2 on the season, with just two more dual meets left during the season. "I thought it was a great day of practice for us," said Navy head coach Bruce Burnett. "Our JV team wrestled NAPS and Nassau Community College today and then our varsity wrestled two matches against two good foes. Again, our conditioning really paid off. There is no question that we are getting better as the year is going on and that we will continue to get better as we push forward to the postseason." In the first dual of the day, Navy scored extra-margin victories in four weight classes, including falls from Jonny Kane (Portland, Maine) at 184 pounds and from Chris Pogue (Chesapeake, Va.) at 197 pounds. Spencer Manley (Ooltewah, Tenn.) and No. 20-ranked John Cox (Grand Haven, Mich.) also scored major decisions at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively. The match started at 174 pounds, where Matt Stolpinski (Westfield, Mass.) won a hard-fought 13-8 decision over Rick Brownlee to give Navy a lead it would never relinquish. After Kane and Pogue recorded falls in the next two weight classes, senior heavweight Tanner Garrett (Tulsa, Okla.), ranked seventh in the country, scored two takedowns in the third period to defeat Jainor Palma, 5-2, for his 33rd victory of the season. 125-pounder Alex Usztics (Dauphin, Pa.) then recorded an impressive win with a 12-5 victory over Jeremy Hartrum. Usztics unleashed a move he named "The Zeppelin" twice on Hartrum to gain valuable back points to earn him the victory. At 133 pounds, the home crowd anticipated the return of freshman Joe Baker (Poway, Calif.), who looked strong in the first two periods, then held on for an 11-7 victory over a strong Garrett Cummings. Baker was wrestling for the first time in his career at home, after missing more than a year to a shoulder injury. "We just need to get him some matches," said Burnett. "He is still not where he needs to be, but Cummings is a very good wrestler, and really made him work. We were disappointed that North Carolina had to forfeit at 133, because he just needs to get some matches in." After Manley and Cox won the next two weight classes by major decision, John Jarred (Kansas City, Mo.) and Craig Dziewiatkowski (Aurora, Ill.) followed with decisions over Kody Hamrah and Obie Simpson at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively, to close out the 38-0 shutout of North Carolina State. In the second dual of the day, Navy won four matches by forfeit, and Garrett and Dziewiatkowski scored big overtime victories to lead Navy past North Carolina, 41-4. Stolpinski and Kane opened the match with a pair of decisions to give Navy a 6-0 lead. Kane rallied for a victory over Justin Dobies, who entered the match with a 22-11 record, scoring two takedowns in the final 1:20 of the match. After Pogue won by forfeit at 197 pounds, Garrett defeated No. 12-ranked Spencer Nadolsky, 3-1, in overtime to push his record to 34-2. Garrett scored a takedown with 20 seconds left in overtime after Nadolsky had a shot in on Garrett's legs that the Navy senior snapped away and then spun behind Nadolsky for the takedown. Navy received forfeits at 125 and 133 pounds to push the lead to 27-0. UNC received its lone win of the day at 141 pounds when Vincent Ramirez scored a major decision over Manley, but Cox responded at 149 pounds with his sixth tech fall of the season, 18-2, over Isaiah Britton. John Jarred won by forfeit at 157 pounds, and Dziewiatkowski concluded the night with a 7-5 overtime decision over Deon Barrett. Dziewiatkowski scored a takedown with just three seconds left in regulation to send the match into the extra session, before scoring the game-winner 21 seconds into the extra session over Barrett, who was a Naval Academy wrestler for three years before transferring to North Carolina. "Craig had a tough situation today wrestling a guy that he wrestled for three years every day in the practice room," said Burnett. "He is getting stronger and still recovering from his injury, and will get stronger as the year goes. I thought John Cox also wrestled really well. He scored points from all four positions and is getting better as the year goes along." Navy will now look to defend its All-Academy Championship as the Mids search for their third straight team title next weekend at Kings Point, N.Y. Navy has won five of the 11 titles in All-Academy Championship history. NORMAN, Okla. -- In a much-anticipated rematch of the 141-pound 2005 NCAA Championship final, Nate Gallick improved to 24-0 by downing No. 1 Teyon Ware, 4-3, as the ninth-ranked Iowa State wrestlers (10-4, 1-0 Big 12) opened the Big 12 season with a 19-16 win over No. 8 Oklahoma (7-4-1, 0-2 Big 12). In front of 872 spectators Saturday afternoon at Howard McCasland Field House, ISU won six of ten matches en route to the victory, including a major decision at 133 pounds and an upset at 174 pounds. "It was a great win," head coach Bobby Douglas said. "This is the best we have wrestled all year. Gallick's match was one for the books, Bertolino's upset of Roberts -- our guys wrestled very well today." At 133 pounds, NCAA qualifier Jesse Sundell defeated Trey Blakely by major decision, 11-3, to put the first points on the board for Iowa State. In the third period Sundell erupted offensively by scoring three takedowns and acquiring 3:19 in riding time. Sundell improves to 14-11 on the year. Gallick, a two-time All-American, defeated Ware 4-3. Ware, a two-time NCAA champion, took Gallick down at the 2:05 mark in the first period to go up 2-0. Each wrestler notched an escape making the score 3-1 in favor of Ware. Gallick evened the score with a takedown closing out the second period and then registered an escape one second into the final period. It was enough to seal the victory, as Gallick defeated Ware for the second time this year. Gallick defeated Ware in the NWCA All-Star Classic earlier in the season, 3-1. Gallick now holds a 6-1 career record against Ware. "I hope to see him [Ware] two more times this season, at the Big 12 Championships and in the NCAA finals," the Tucson, Ariz. native said. "We have a history and today we both wanted the win. It was definitely a match the fans were looking forward to." The Cyclones and Sooners were deadlocked at 10-10 after third-ranked Trent Paulson recorded a 4-3 decision over Shane Vernon at 157 pounds. Travis Paulson, ranked eighth at 165 pounds, put ISU on top 13-10 with an 8-1 decision over No. 14 Jarrod King. David Bertolino upset No. 13 Wes Roberts, 6-5, at 174 pounds. Trailing 5-3 midway through the second period, Bertolino took down the two-time NCAA qualifier, tying the bout 5-5. Opening the third period, Bertolino started from the down position and escaped from Roberts, clinching the victory. CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Oregon State 157-pounder Tony Hook and 197-pounder Dan Pitsch recorded pins as the Beavers beat Fresno State 40-4 in non-league wrestling Saturday afternoon in the Truax Indoor Center. OSU (9-2-1 overall, 5-1 Pacific-10) will finish its home schedule Saturday night, wrestling Northern Colorado at 7 p.m. in Gill Coliseum. Against Fresno State (3-8), OSU received a pair of forfeits and won seven of the eight matches wrestled. It was Oregon State's seventh win in its last eight dual meets. Hook, ranked 17th nationally in the National Wrestling Coaches Association/InterMat poll, picked up his fourth pin of the year when he flattened Fresno State's Dustin Rocha in 2:20. Hook is now 15-7 this season. Pitsch got his second pin of the season when he put Miguel Rodriguez's shoulders to the mat just before the buzzer sounded ending the first period. Pitsch is 12-8 this season. The Beavers also got a major decision from Bobby Pfennigs, as the 133-pounder won his fourth straight match 11-2 over Sean Carlson. COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland Terrapin wrestling team swept a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference duals against North Carolina and Duke Saturday afternoon at Comcast Pavilion. The Terps defeated the Tar Heels, 24-18, and picked up a 21-12 decision over the Blue Devils to improve to 4-0 in the ACC. "We are wrestling with confidence and are winning matches that we weren't winning earlier in the season," head coach Pat Santoro said. "We need to keep getting better and eliminate some mistakes, but these are good results." With the victories, the Terps extended their winning streak to five duals and improved to 6-7 overall and 4-0 in the conference. The four conference victories are the most since 1993 and puts Maryland in position to win the ACC dual meet title. The Terps final conference dual will be on the road against Virginia on Feb. 17. Five Maryland wrestlers won both matches on the day: James Knox (125), Brendan Byrne (133), Adam James (157), Adam DeCosmo (165) and Jerry Afari (197). Against North Carolina, the match started at 197 pounds where there were three consecutive forfeits (two by UNC, one by Maryland). The first contested bout of the day was at 133 pounds, where Brendan Byrne won 10-6 over Jared Royer. Byrne used a strong second period in which he scored an escape, a takedown and two nearfall points to pull away. The Tar Heels then picked up nine points in the next two matches to tie the dual at 15-15. At 141, UNC's Vincent Ramirez controlled his match with Alex Krom and won 5-1, and Isaiah Britton tossed Andrew Schlaffer to his back in the first period and got the fall at the 1:55 mark. Adam James ended UNC's run with an 8-3 decision over Brian Baglio at 157 pounds, and Adam DeCosmo scored a takedown in the second and third on his way to a 5-1 win over Deon Barrett to give the Terps a 21-15 lead in the dual with two matches left. Mike Maceroli put the dual away with his 5-3 win over Jake Puckett. Maceroli scored a takedown in the second period and one on the edge of the mat in the third to give the Terps a 24-15 lead, clinching the win for Maryland. In the last bout against the Tar Heels, North Carolina's Justin Dobies scored the only offensive points on his way to a 6-3 win over Luke Stauffer, making the final dual score, 24-18. Against Duke, Afari started the dual off with an 11-7 win over Konrad Dudziak. After a scoreless first period, Afari exploded for four takedowns in the second to take command of the match. In the third, Afari registered an escape and a takedown to take the victory. A forfeit at heavyweight gave Duke a 6-3 lead, but the Terps ripped off six straight decisions to take a 21-9 lead. Knox's takedown proved to be the difference in his 4-1 win over Kellan McKeon at 125 pounds and Byrne notched five takedowns in his 9-6 victory over Mike Degli Obizzi at 133 pounds. In the next two bouts, the Terps used third period rallies to collect decision to help them extend their lead. Krom trailed his match 7-5 late in the third, but scored an escape with 36 seconds left and then scored a match-winning takedown with 20 seconds left. At 149 pounds, Schlaffer trailed by three points with 10 seconds left, but was awarded a point for stalling on Daniel Shvartsman and then promptly tied the match with a takedown as regulation expired. He needed just 20 seconds in the one minute sudden victory period to score the winning takedown. At 157 pounds, James trailed 2-0 after the first period, but outscored Cameron Harms 7-2 the rest of the way and picked up the riding time point to win 8-4. DeCosmo won another close match late for the Terps as he edged Aaron Glover. DeCosmo trailed 4-3 late in the third, but scored a takedown with just 17 seconds on the clock and held on to take the 5-4 decision. The Blue Devils closed the dual with a pair of victories as Levi Craig (174) defeated Maceroli 8-2, and Dan Tulley outlasted Stauffer, 6-4. Maryland 24, North Carolina 18 Wt. BUFFALO, NY -- First, the University at Buffalo wrestling team shook off a curse. Then, it went for milestones. Finally, Buffalo (8-3 overall, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) left its mark on the record books during a three-meet sweep at a quad-meet at Alumni Arena on Saturday, beating MAC foe Ohio, 25-9, Delaware State, 49-3 and Ithaca, 31-9. By beating Ohio (6-7, 1-1 MAC), Buffalo shook off an eight-year drought against the Bobcats by winning eight matches. Junior 157-pounder John Cummings (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore/Nassau CC) and senior 184-pounder Garrett Hicks (Chautauqua, NY/Chautauqua Lake) each won their 20th matches of the season. Hicks and juniors Mark Budd (Orrville, OH/Orrville) (133 pounds) and Pat Lloyd (Middletown, NY/Valley Central) (149 pounds) also reached their 60th career victories. To cap off the meet, senior heavyweight Harold Sherrell (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), who became just the 13th wrestler in school history to reach 75 career wins with his second win of the day, added his name to the top of the single-season 3-point near fall list by posting 10 in his final two matches to give him 20 on the season, passing Bruce Hadsell (1977-78) and Jim Young's (1974-75) record of 18. Buffalo posted a 25-9 win against Ohio, spurred on by the Bulls earning wins in the final six matches of the meet. It was the Bulls' first win against the Bobcats since a 25-14 win in 1996-97, breaking a string of eight Bobcats wins in a row. It also turned a recent string of bad luck for Buffalo in the matchup, as Ohio won the last three meets in meets that all came down to the final meet. Budd got Buffalo on the board in the 133-pound match after the team lost a pin at 125, as Budd earned a takedown with 30 seconds left to seal a 3-1 win over Terry Jackson. After an Ohio decision at 141, Lloyd earned a 1-0 decision at 149, where his only point came on a third-period escape. Cummings won his 20th match of the year with a dominating 7-1 decision against Jake Frerechs at 157 pounds to tie the score at nine after five matches. Moran posted another dominating performance at 165, after sitting out at last week's New York State Championships, posting a 10-6 decision against Kent Smith, giving Buffalo its first lead of the day at 12-9. Sophomore Mike Ragusa (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) followed with an overtime, 4-1 win against Ryan Knapp, as he earned an escape and a takedown in the final overtime session to take the match. Hicks put the Bulls in control at 184 pounds, as he came back from a 4-2 deficit to control the final two periods and earn a 7-4 victory against the MAC's fourth-ranked Brian Cesear, thanks to two reversals to give him 30 in his career. Cerminara clinched the meet with his 12-4 decision against Nick Terbay at 197 pounds, giving the Bulls a 22-9 advantage heading into the final match. Moran spurred on the Bulls' four wins as he earned a pin in 1:01, while Sherrell earned a technical fall that included five 3-point near falls, giving him 15 this season, just three short of the school record. Cerminara and senior Cliff Smith (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) each earned major decisions in the win. Hicks and Budd each won their 60th career matches with their forfeits. In the final meet, Buffalo used bonus points in five of its wins to rout Ithaca (6-6), 31-9, in just the 11th win for Buffalo in 28 meetings against the Division III power. The Bulls, who received a lift with the first dual meet win in freshman Evan Veney's (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) career with a 5-4 decision against Macario Alvarez, the team reeled off 16 points in the next three matches, as Budd and Lloyd posted technical falls and Smith earned his first fall of the season. Lloyd's win was the 60th of his career. The Bombers won three of the next four matches, but Moran posted a 12-2 major decision at 165 pounds against Brian Lockard to split the losses and put the Bulls up 23-9 heading into the upper weight matches. Cerminara put the Bulls on the winning side of the ledger with a 9-3 decision against Ithaca's 25-5 Nick Calandrino. Sherrell finished the match by setting the 3-point near fall record in a 2:28 technical fall of Jake Mender to wrap up the meet. The Bulls hit the mats again on Saturday as they face MAC foe Eastern Michigan at 1:00 pm as head coach Jim Beichner will look for the 100th dual meet victory of his 11-year career at Buffalo. PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Patrick Simpson and Luke Calvert cashed in major decision victories, and three other Black Knights won bouts as the Army wrestling team nipped EIWA foe Brown, 17-16, Saturday at the Pizzitola Center. The Black Knights, winners of four straight matches, improve to 6-3-2 overall and 4-0 in the EIWA, while the Bears slip to 4-5 (1-2 EIWA). Brown began the day by winning three of the first four bouts. Patrick Simpson was the lone Black Knight to record a win during that span as the senior captain rolled to a 12-4 major decision triumph versus Shawn Cully at 149 pounds. The Nashville, Tenn., native improved his team-leading overall record to a sparkling 23-5 with his eighth consecutive victory. Trailing 10-4 midway through the match, Army responded by winning three straight bouts to seize control of the contest. Senior Chad Marzec began the Black Knights' surge as the Toledo, Ohio, native scored a 3-2 decision over Matt Gevelinger at 174 pounds. Seniors Luke Calvert and Charles Martin followed with wins at 184 pounds and 197 pounds, respectively. Calvert, who has won 13 of his last 17 bouts, produced a 15-6 major decision triumph opposite Branden Stearns to give Army its first lead of the day at 11-10. Martin, who upped his dual match mark to 5-0 on the year, followed by taking a 6-3 decision from Leo Saniuk as Army assumed a 14-10 advantage with just three bouts remaining. Brown closed the contest by winning two of the final three bouts, but it was William Simpson's victory for Army at 125 pounds that secured the win for Black Knights. After Michael Sprigg dropped a tight 3-1 decision in the heavyweight matchup, Simpson nipped Jeff Schell, 1-0, in the 125-pound bout to extend Army's cushion to 17-13 going into the final bout. It marked the second straight season that Army has defeated Brown by a single point. Last year, Phillip Simpson capped a furious Army comeback as the home standing Black Knights upended the Bears, 19-18, at Gillis Field House. Army leads the all-time series, 11-5-1. "It was good to escape with this win," remarked Army head coach Chuck Barbee. "We were hot and cold throughout the match, but we put ourselves in position to win at the end. I thought Patrick (Simpson) and Charles (Martin) stepped up today against some tough opponents." The third-ranked University of Illinois wrestling team won its second conference match of the year with a 26-6 victory over No. 15 Indiana Friday evening in Bloomington, Ind. Both teams came into the evening unbeaten and only one would leave that way. The Illini improved to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten. The Illini are now 10-2 against the Hoosiers in head coach Mark Johnson's 14-year career. The Illini were looking to repeat last season's domination of Indiana--which resulted in a 37-0 shutout at Huff Gym. However, with both teams posting nine wrestlers in the Top-25, tonight's match turned out to be closer than last season's. The dual began with the highly anticipated rematch at 125 pounds as senior All-Americans No. 3 Kyle Ott (Huber Heights, Ohio) and No. 1 Joe Dubuque renewed acquaintances once again. The last time the two met was at the 2005 NCAA finals where Dubuque won a 2-0 decision. For Ott, this match wasn't only about keeping his perfect record intact, it was for redemption. In the closing seconds of the first period, Ott took a shot but failed to score. The only scoring in the second period was on a Dubuque escape to lead the match 1-0. In the third period, Dubuque scored a takedown and rode Ott for the rest of the period en route to a 4-0 victory and giving Indiana a 3-0 lead. The Hoosiers added another three points as Gabe Flores (Madera, Calif.) dropped a 4-0 decision to Andrae Hernandez in their 133-pound match. In the second period, Hernandez scored on an escape and then followed with a takedown to lead 3-0. Flores never got a chance to score in the third period as Hernandez rode the sophomore for the rest of the match. After dropping the first two matches, the Illini turned the dual around by winning the next eight matches. At 144, Cassio Pero (Chicago Heights, Ill.) finally got the Illini on the scoreboard with a 19-5 major decision over Nick Spatola. The junior All-American logged five takedowns in the third period to dominate the Indiana senior. Troy Tirapelle, (Clovis, Calif.) outlasted Matt Cooper in their 149-pount match and gave the Illini a 7-6 lead. At 157, top-ranked Alex Tirapelle found himself in an unfamiliar spot against No. 7 Brandon Becker. The Illini's senior All-American found himself in a 7-4 hole going into the third period. Tirapelle started the period scoring an escape and a takedown to tie the match. Then with 1:13 of riding time under his belt, Tirapelle came away with an 8-7 victory. No. 8 Mike Poeta (Highwood, Ill.) kept the Illini's winning streak alive by scoring a takedown in every period to win a decision over Max Dean, 8-3, in their 165-pound bout. In their 174-pound match, No. 16 Donny Reynolds (Frankfort, Ill.) was in command the entire time scoring takedown after takedown to come away with a 10-5 decision against Marc Bennett. At 184, Pete Friedl (Orland Park, Ill.) looked to bounce back from last week's loss to Purdue's Ben Wissel. The Illinois senior All-American scored a takedown against Justin Curran 15 seconds into the match. The Illini's fourth ranked wrestler added four more takedowns to dominate the sixth-ranked Curran and win by major decision, 12-4. Justin joins Brendan and Andrew of Northwestern as the third Curran brother to fall to Friedl. Tyrone Byrd edged past Brady Richardson in their 197-pound bout, 4-3. With the match tied at two at the beginning of the third period, Byrd (Clinton, Ill.) scored a point on an escape to put him up by a point. With under ten seconds to go in the match, Richardson took a shot that sent the Illini's ninth-ranked senior to the mat and the crowd to their feet. When buzzer sounded and no points awarded to the Richardson, the angry Indiana fans let . At heavyweight, Matt Weight kept the Illini's eight-match winning streak intact against Dave Herman. MINNEAPOLIS -- Winning seven of 10 matches, the University of Nebraska-Omaha scored a 24-10 triumph over host Augsburg College in a meeting of two of the top teams in small-college wrestling on Friday night at Si Melby Hall. Nebraska-Omaha, the two-time defending NCAA Division II national champions and current top-ranked team in the division, remained unbeaten at 6-0 in dual meets. Augsburg, the defending NCAA Division III national champions and current No. 2-ranked team nationally in its division, is now 7-2 overall. The visiting Mavericks built a 15-0 lead after the first five weight classes, and claimed two wins from top-ranked wrestlers in the second half of the dual meet to clinch the match. Top-ranked heavyweight Les Sigman (Sr., Sturgis, S.D./Sturgis Brown HS) scored a first-period pin in the final match to cap the evening for the Mavericks. Sigman, the three-time defending Division II national titlist, improved to 14-0 on the season, extending his individual winning streak to 63 straight matches. J.D. CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Oregon State got a pin from 174-pounder Jeremy Larson and major decisions from 197-pounder Dan Pitsch, heavyweight Ty Watterson, 141-pounder Kyle Larson and 157-pounder Tony Hook as the Beavers beat Cal State-Bakersfield 31-9 in Pacific-10 wrestling Friday night at the Truax Indoor Center. It was the sixth win in the last seven dual meets for OSU (8-2-1 overall, 5-1 Pacific-10). Oregon State finishes its home schedule on Saturday, meeting Fresno State at 2 p.m. in the Truax Indoor Center and Northern Colorado at 7 p.m. in Gill Coliseum. Against Cal State-Bakersfield (3-6, 2-4), the Beavers won the first seven meets of the night to open up a 25-0 lead. "We dominated most of the matches," OSU head coach Joe Wells said. "We pushed hard and we had some guys get tired, and that's good. We wrestled hard and scored, and that's the key. I was pleased with how we did as a group going out and scoring. Cal State-Bakersfield was without two or three guys in their lineup, but we did go out aggressive and score a lot of takedowns and a lot of points." One of the Roadrunners who was out was 174-pounder Christian Arellano, ranked 20th nationally in the National Wrestling Coaches Association/InterMat poll and ranked third in the Pac-10. The night's top matchup figured to be Arellano against OSU's Jeremy Larson, who is ranked 18th in the nation and first in the Pac-10. SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The No. 11 Arizona State University wrestling team returned to the site of its 2005 Pac-10 Championship Friday night and took on a tough No. 20 Cal Poly squad inside Mott Gym in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The Sun Devils, who trailed by nine points heading into the last two bouts of the evening, came from behind to defeat the Mustangs, 25-22, to improve to 10-6 overall on the year and 5-0 in the Pac-10. The victory marks the 13th in a row for the Sun Devils, dating back to a loss at Cal State Bakersfield (Sunday afternoon's opponent) in 2004. The win also improve ASU to 30-2 all-time against conference foes under Head Coach Thom Ortiz. The Sun Devils and Mustangs, ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the most recent Pac-10 rankings, opened the dual at 125 pounds where No. 7 Jeremy Mendoza (Sr., Temecula, Calif.) improved to 27-2 on the year by pinning John Hanks at 1:45. With his third victory in a row by fall, Mendoza put the visitors out in front early, 6-0. But the Mustangs struck back by winning the next three bouts to take a 13-6 lead. At 133 pounds, Adam Hickey (So., Mayfield, Ohio) put up a fight, but was unable to upset No. 4 Darrell Vasquez, dropping a 15-3 major decision. Mankato, Minn. -- Thanks to consecutive pins by junior 174-pounder Travis Krinkie (Blue Earth, Minn.) and senior 184-pounder John Koons (Crosby, Minn.), #2 Minnesota State held off #5 Augustana 25-17 in a North Central Conference dual with 702 in attendance in Taylor Center on the campus of MSU. The victory improved the Mavericks to 10-1 in dual competition this year and 1-0 in the NCC while the Vikings fell to 9-3 overall and 1-1 in conference competition. The evening started off at the 125-pound weight class and six quick points for Minnesota State as sophomore Nick Smith (Yankton, S.D.), the #6-ranked wrestler in NCAA Division II, went unopposed. Junior Jeff Pfaffinger (Blue Earth, Minn.) followed with an 18-5 major decision at 133 pounds over Jeremie Degen. Augustana claimed victories in the ensuing pair of matches, starting off with #6 Andre VanderVelde notching a mild upset over senior Zach Stevens (Erwinna, Pa.), ranked #5 in the nation, via an 8-5 decision at 141. #2 Ryan King followed at 149 with a 6-2 decision over MSU junior Brandon Girtz (Forest Lake, Minn.). King and Girtz were tied at 2-2 late in the third period, but King managed a takedown and a two-point near fall to avoid the upset. Senior Mathias Bitz (Bismarck, N.D.) got the Mavericks back on track at 157-pounds with an 11-4 decision over the Vikings' Aaron Haddorff. Interestingly enough, all 15 combined points came in the third period of that match after Bitz earned an escape to start the final stanza, then unleashed a series of takedowns on Haddorff. Augustana again closed the deficit to four points after 165-pounder Cody Henricksen notched the biggest upset of the evening with a 5-4 decision over the #3-ranked wrestler in the nation, MSU sophomore Andy Pickar. With the Vikings threatening to take their first lead of the evening, the marquee matchup of the evening came up next at 174 with a pair of Top Five wrestlers taking the mat in Augustana's #5 Dusty Wilking and MSU's #2 Krinkie. However, the build-up proved to be short--lived as Wilking struck first with a takedown, but Krinkie earned an escape and a takedown of his own. Shortly thereafter, Krinkie put Wilking on his back to win by fall at the 2:17 mark. Not to be outdone, Koons, also ranked #2 in the nation, followed up Krinkie's pin with one of his own at the 3:28 mark in the 184 pound match. A scoreless first period gave the decision on position to Augustana's Nate Buys. Koons chose to be down after Buys deferred, and just 28 seconds into the second period, Koons worked a reversal then got his pin to extend the Maverick lead to 25-9 and clinch the dual victory for MSU at that point. Though Augustana was unable to come back to win the dual, they did claim victories in the final two bouts on the evening. Tim Boldt, the top-ranked wrestler in the nation, earned a 24-9 technical fall over MSU junior Ben Janike (Wascea, Minn.) only after the point for riding time was factored in at the 7:00 mark. In the final match of the night at heavyweight, the Vikings' Chris Bietz earned a 9-5 decision over Maverick senior Tim Kraemer (Cold Springs, Minn.). That match was tied at 5-5 late in the match, but Bietz had already clinched a point for riding time. Because of that, Kraemer allowed Bietz to escape in hopes of earning a takedown and forcing an overtime period, but Bietz thwarted those plans with a takedown to clinch the win. The Mavericks will next be in action on Friday, Feb. 3, when they host #12 MSU Moorhead in a non-conference dual, with the meet scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. in Taylor Center.

Alamosa, Colorado -- The Utah Valley State wrestling team picked up a 24-15 win over No. 11 Adams State on Friday. The win ups the Wolverines record to 5-8 in dual meets. "They are a highly ranked team," Utah Valley State coach Cody Sanderson said. "This was a great win for us. We came back and got a couple of big wins tonight." Probably the biggest win of the night came when 165-pounder Devin Siddoway beat Evan Copeland after he was forced to quit in between the second and third periods due to an injury. "That was a huge win for us," Sanderson said. At 149, Justin Rawle won 7-4 decision over Dave Welanko. Clayton Wolf and Dallin Norton each won their match by forfeit. Talon Vickers also won an 8-6 decision over No. 7 Rob McCabe in the 125-pound match. If there was a downside to the match it was that Erkin Tadizhimetov's nine-match win streak came to an end when he lost a 6-5 decision to Raymond Dunning, the second ranked wrestler in the 133-pound match. FARGO, N.D. -- The North Dakota State wrestling team won seven of 10 bouts en route to a 27-9 victory over Air Force on Friday, Jan. 27, in front of a crowd of 744 at the Bison Sports Arena. The match started with Air Force (2-3) jumping out to an early 6-0 lead after brothers Bridger and Zach Lord picked up victories in the 149 and 157-pound bouts. Bridger Lord defeated Gabe Mooney 7-4 and Zach Lord earned three points for the Falcons by beating NDSU's Adam Aho 10-7. North Dakota State (3-3) came back with three straight victories, starting with 165-pounder Zach Molitor. The true freshman picked up his second consecutive win by scoring five unanswered points in the final period, giving him a 7-2 victory over Greg Ford. The match continued with team captain Matt Hermann edging out Stephen Crozier 9-8 at 174 pounds. The match was even throughout and came down to Hermann's advantage time of 1 minute and 12 seconds. With the victory, Hermann improved his overall record to 4-5 and evened his dual record to 3-3. At 184 pounds, Matt Wetterling picked up his 20th victory and 15th pin of the season sticking Zane Hershey in just 51 seconds, giving the Bison a 12-6 lead. The sophomore is now 4-2 in duals and has recorded pins in his last three matches. At 197 pounds, Air Force's Brendan McLean took down NDSU's Jacob Bryce with 12 seconds remaining in the match to give McLean the 3-2 decison. McLean, who was nationally ranked until this week, was called for stalling with 21 seconds remaining in the third period before securing the victory. Heavyweight Mike Maresh picked up his fifth consecutive win, beating Frank McGrath 11-4. Maresh used a flurry of takedowns throughout the match to secure the victory and gave North Dakota State a 15-9 advantage. After a forfeit by the Falcons at 125 pounds, Eric Sanders defeated Brandon Strong 7-6. Strong, a 2005 NCAA national qualifier, had a 6-4 lead after the first period. Sanders came back in the second period with a reversal and sealed the victory at 133 pounds thanks to 2:55 of advantage time. The match concluded at 133 pounds with David Cunningham defeating Shane Manuel 9-5. Cunningham is now third on the team in wins with 13 and improved his dual record to 3-3. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Mike Grogan earned a technical fall win and Eric Albright picked up a major decision to lead the Virginia Wrestling Team to a 27-10 win over North Carolina (12-6-1, 0-1-1 ACC) in the Atlantic Coast Conference Opener for the Cavaliers (6-4, 1-0 ACC) at Memorial Gym Friday night. It was Virginia head coach Lenny Bernstein's 100th career victory. Grogan, wrestling at 174 pounds, earned his first technical fall of the season. He built an 8-0 lead after the first period and held on for the win. Albright registered a 9-1 major decision win over UNC's Jared Royer at 133 pounds. He earned 2:23 in riding time to make for the final score. Anthony Burke started it off for the Cavaliers at 125 pounds. He battled Bobby Shaw to a 4-4 tie after three periods, but his 2:04 in riding time gave him a 5-4 decision putting UVa ahead, 3-0. After Albright's major decision gave the Cavaliers a 7-0 lead, UNC's Vincent Ramirez posted a 12-2 major decision over UVa's Peter Ferrara pulling the Tar Heels within, 7-4. Virginia then won the next four bouts. Drew DiPasquale edged UNC's Isaiah Britton, 7-3, at 149 pounds. IOWA CITY -- The University of Iowa wrestling defeated Purdue, 28-11 Friday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes improved their record to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten. The match started at 125 pounds where Iowa's Lucas Magnani defeated Brandon Tucker, 7-2. Daniel Dennis (133) suffered a technical fall against Purdue's Chris Fleeger, but Alex Tsirtsis (141) regained the lead for Iowa with an 11-2 decision over Jason Cook. Purdue's Doug Withstandly gave second-ranked Ty Eustice (149) a tough match, but Eustice prevailed, 4-2. Joe Johnston followed with a 21-7 major decision and the Hawkeyes led, 14-5. Junior Eric Luedke (165) increased Iowa's lead after a fall against Purdue's Dan Bedoy and Mark Perry (174) followed with Iowa's second major decision of the night for the Hawkeyes. State College, Pa. -- Head coach Troy Sunderland's Nittany Lion wrestlers, ranked No. 10 nationally, won seven of ten bouts and cruised to a 27-12 win over No. 18 Michigan State in Big Ten wrestling action. Nearly 3,000 fans packed Rec Hall to see Penn State win its sixth straight and hammer the visiting Spartans and grab six of nine bonus points. The dual began at 184, where Penn State's Eric Bradley (Plaistow, N.H.) took on Michigan State's Joe Williams, only recently dropping out of the national rankings. Bradley, a returning All-American and ranked No. 1 in the nation, got the dual's first take down less than :30 in to the bout to go up 2-1 after a Williams escape. The two-time defending Big Ten champion followed it up with another takedown at the one-minute mark and rode Williams out for the remainder of the period to head to into the second period up 4-1 with over a minute's riding time. Bradley took down to begin the second, quickly escaped, and then took Williams down to take a commanding 7-2 lead after the Spartan's escape. Williams chose down to begin the third period and escaped after :32, but was taken down and let out by Bradley quickly as the Nittany Lion senior began working for bonus points. One more take down and a 3:08 riding time edge gave Bradley the 12-4 major victory and the Nittany Lions a 4-0 lead. Bradley improved to 4-0 on the year. Penn State's other returning All-American, sophomore Phil Davis (Harrisburg, Pa.) took the mat at 197 in the dual's next bout, facing Michigan State's Jeff Clemens. Davis, ranked No. 7 in the country, got an early take down to go up 2-1 after the Spartan senior escaped. The duo would battle evenly for the remainder of the period. Davis, up 2-1 heading into the second, took down to begin the period. Davis escaped, Clemens was hit with a second stall warning and Davis took him down again and rode him out to carry a 6-1 lead into the third. Clemens chose down to begin the final period, giving Davis a chance to work on top. Davis would get two back points and build up an insurmountable riding time edge as well. Clemens would avoid the major decision with a last second reversal, but Davis grabbed the 9-3 win and put Penn State up 7-0. Davis improved to 11-3 on the year. In the heavyweight bout, Penn State senior Joel Edwards (Upper Darby, Pa.) faced Michigan State senior Max Lossen. No. 20 Edwards would fight off a strong Lossen shot and score his down a minute into the bout. Davis would ride Lossen out for the remainder of the period and carry a 2-0 lead with a 2:07 riding time edge into the second. Edwards began the second period down, escaped within seconds and immediately took Lossen down to up his lead to 5-1 after a Lossen escape. Another Edwards escape had the Nittany Lion up 7-1 heading into the final period. Lossen chose down to begin the final stanza and was let up by Edwards. Working for bonus points, Edwards would take down Lossen and let him up again to lead 9-3 with 1:07 left. Edwards took Lossen down one more time and rode the Spartan senior out to post an impressive 12-3 major. The victory put the Nittany Lions up 11-0 and improved Edwards' record to 11-2. The dual headed back to the top of the line-up with Nittany Lion sophomore Tim Haas (Camp Hill, Pa.) took on one of the nation's best in Michigan State's Nick Simmons at 125. Simmons carried a No. 4 ranking into the bout. Simmons would set the tempo early but would not manage any points off of Haas until a powerful struggle where each wrestler nearly scored a take down resulted in a Simmons take down with :20 left. Up 2-0 to start the second, Simmons chose the top position to begin the next stanza. He would ride Haas for over a minute and get three near fall points as the period wound down and secure a pin with just two seconds left. Simmons' win tightened the team score to 11-6 in Penn State's favor and dropped Haas to 13-5 on the year. Nittany Lion freshman Jake Strayer (South Fork, Pa.), ranked No. 9, took on Jeff Wimberly at 133. Strayer got the bout's first takedown with 1:13 left in the first and rode Wimberly out to carry a 2-0 lead and a 1:13 riding time edge entering the second. Strayer chose down to begin the second and quickly escaped to go up 3-0. The talented Nittany Lion freshman would notch another take down with :20 left and ride Wimberly out to a 5-0 lead heading into the final period. Wimberly chose neutral to begin the final period but was taken down by Strayer with 1:10 left. Wimberly would avoid the major with a reversal at the :35 mark, but Strayer would still post a resounding 9-2 win to put Penn State up 14-6. Strayer improved to 15-1 on the year. The first of three bouts featuring two ranked opponents took place at 141, where No. 9 DeWitt Driscoll (Connellsville, Pa.) of Penn State took on Michigan State's Andy Simmons, ranked No. 4. The bigger of the two Spartan Simmons brothers would post the first takedown :30 into the first period. Driscoll, having been rid for the remainder of the period, would nearly pin Simmons as time ran out but could not quite flatten Simmons shoulders on a near reversal. Simmons, up 2-0 with over two-minutes riding time, chose down to begin the second. Simmons escaped :40 into the period and took Driscoll down and rode him out to take a 5-0 lead into the final period with a 2:45 riding time edge. Driscoll chose down to begin the third but would take 1:10 to escape. Simmons would fight off a number of Driscoll shot attempts to get away with a hard-fought 6-1 win between the two ranked grapplers. Michigan State crept to within 14-9 and Driscoll fell to 10-5. At 149, two more ranked wrestlers would meet as Penn State senior James Woodall (Dupont, Pa.) ranked No. 10, faced No. 15 Darren McKnight. With the Spartans trying to find their way back into the dual, Woodall would get out to an early 2-1 lead with the bout's first take down. Another hard-fought take down gave Woodall a 4-2 lead after a second McKnight escape with :20 left in the first. Woodall would nearly score a third take down as the first period ended but time expired. Woodall chose down to start the second and escaped within seconds to a 5-2 lead. The duo would fight off each other's attempts for the remainder of the second period and McKnight chose down to begin the third, trailing 5-2. McKnight quickly escaped to cut the heated bout to 5-3. Woodall would fight off a late McKnight shot at tying the bout to get another takedown of his own and post an impressive 7-3 win. The victory upped the Nittany Lion lead to 17-9 and improved Woodall to 6-2 on the year. Nittany Lion junior Nathan Galloway (State College, Pa.) carried a No. 14 ranking into his 157-pound match-up with Spartan Tony Greathouse, also a junior. After a thrilling takedown, Galloway would quickly plant Greathouse and fight for a pin at the 1:46 mark. The pin, Galloway's second of the year and the 11th of his career, put Penn State up 23-9, clinched the dual, and improved Galloway's record to 10-7. True freshman David Erwin (Urbana, Ohio), ranked No. 11 at 165, took on MSU's Greg Goidosik in the next bout. Erwin continued his impressive rookie campaign with two quick takedowns to go up 4-2 halfway through the first. Dictating the flow of the bout, Erwin scored another take down and had a 6-3 lead heading into the second period. Goidosik chose down to begin the second and escaped to inch within two, 6-4. Erwin, however, would continue to dominate the bout and go up 8-5 with yet another take down. Erwin began the third in the down position and reversed Goidosik. Erwin would dominate the remainder of the bout and post a thorough 15-7 major decision to put the Lions up 27-9 and up his freshman mark to 19-4. Nittany Lion junior James Yonushonis (Philipsburg, Pa.), ranked No. 13 in the nation, faced Michigan State's R.J. Boudro, ranked No. 7, at 174 in the night's final bout. Boudro posted the first take down of the bout with :55 seconds left in the first, but Yonushonis quickly escaped to a 2-1 deficit, which is how the first period would end. Yonushonis chose down to start the second and knotted the score with an escape less than ten seconds in. Neither nationally ranked wrestler would manage a take down until Boudro would get Yonushonis on the edge of the mat as the second period ended. Boudro, up 4-2 heading into the third, chose down to start the evening's final period. His escape would increase his lead to 5-2. Yonushonis would pressure Boudro for the remainder of the period, but the talented Spartan senior would hold off the Lion junior and escape with a hard fought 5-2 win. Penn State still posted the impressive 27-12 win while Yonushonis fell to 13-4. Penn State is now 9-2 on the year, 1-2 in Big Ten action. Michigan State falls to 2-4, 0-1. The Nittany Lions have won six straight duals, five over ranked teams, by a combined score of 164-52 (winning 45 of 60 bouts) Penn State hosts No. 2 Minnesota on in a 1 p.m. tilt in Rec Hall.
