  1. The final weekend of the 2023-24 regular season provided for plenty of interesting storylines even though some schools already wrapped up theirs a week ago. The past couple of days featured top-ten clashes, rivalry duals, some upsets, a potentially impactful injury, and much more. Here are the key storylines from the final week of the regular season. Hey, we’ve got at least one per conference. Iowa/Oklahoma State Iowa continued their recent dominance over their rival Oklahoma State with a 22-9 dual victory on Sunday afternoon. The Hawkeyes have won each of their last four meetings against the Cowboys. We covered this in more detail yesterday in our wrap-up article. Down Goes Number One! On the final day of the regular season, top-ranked 149 lber Ridge Lovett (Nebraska) suffered his first loss of the 2023-24, when he was beaten by Kyle Parco (Arizona State). A loss by an undefeated wrestler of Lovett’s caliber is surprising, but at the same time, Parco is a three-time All-American and a 2023 NCAA semifinalist. Losing to him isn’t the worst setback in the world. Is Figs Back? Coming into the season, we knew that 125 lbs would probably be wide open. If only we knew just how crazy it would be. Though he wasn’t ranked #1, Richie Figueroa (Arizona State) was viewed as a top contender for the title. Figueroa was undefeated last year, while sharing the starting role with Brandon Courtney. This year got off to a late start due to injuries and Figueroa suffered a few unexpected losses. He checked into the week at just 5-5 against DI competition with only one win over a wrestler currently in the rankings #30 Dominic Mendez (Cal Poly). Figueroa threw yet another wrench into the 125 lb weight class by downing #2 Luke Stanich (Lehigh) on Saturday and #7 Caleb Smith (Nebraska) a day later. At the Pac-12 Championships, Figueroa will get a chance to greatly improve his NCAA seeding, as the bracket will feature three other ranked opponents. However, Figueroa fits into the bracket in Kansas City, you probably don’t want to draw him. Starocci’s Status Potentially lost in a 55-0 blowout of Edinboro by top-ranked Penn State was an ugly-looking injury to three-time national champion Carter Starocci. Looking at the box score, nothing would look amiss as Starocci rolled to his 63rd straight win with a 22-5 tech fall over Joey Arnold. While looking for back points, Starocci stepped over Arnold and put himself into a position similar to a knee-bar. During the scramble that ensued, Starocci’s knee was twisted and he yelled in pain and grabbed the injured knee. At this time, we’re not sure of the extent of the injury; however, it looked very serious. Will it impact his availability for the postseason or hinder his performance? It’s definitely a huge situation to monitor during the upcoming weeks. Campbell Finishes Unbeaten in the SoCon Campbell winning the SoCon wasn’t necessarily a huge surprise, but Scotti Sentes’ team put the finishing touches on their fourth regular season title in the last six years with a 46-0 shutout of VMI. Frequent rival Appalachian State was the only conference school that managed more than nine points against the Camels this season. Bellarmine! Staying down south, we have to mention Bellarmine. Ned Shuck’s team put a bow on their 2023-24 campaign by defeating Chattanooga 18-16 on Sunday. The Knights trailed 12-6 after seven weights and needed to be perfect to pull out the W. That’s what happened as Sam Schroeder (184 lbs) and Thadd Huff (285 lbs) chipped in with decisions sandwiched around a pin from Andrew Liber at 197 lbs. Bellarmine finishes the 2023-24 season with a 14-5 dual record. They posted four SoCon wins on the year - the remaining ones came over Gardner-Webb, Davidson, and Presbyterian. Bellarmine is currently undergoing an athletic department-wide transition from DII to DI status, so they are ineligible for postseason competition in all sports. The good news is that this is the final season impacted by this transition. Bellarmine will be able to wrestle in the 2025 SoCon Championships, with the hopes of qualifying for the 2025 NCAA Tournament. Sickness Hits Mizzou Since schedules started getting released for the 2023-24 season, fans had circled 2/25 as the day of Missouri’s season-ending dual with Iowa State. That was expected to include a fourth round in the series of matches between NCAA champions Keegan O’Toole (Missouri) and David Carr (Iowa State). Last year, Carr prevailed in their dual meeting and in the Big 12 finals, while O’Toole got revenge in the national finals. It looks like we’ll have to wait a few weeks to see the next incarnation of this rivalry. Missouri’s starting lineup was hit hard by illness and fielded a starting ten against Iowa State that likely only had two postseason entrants. As expected, Iowa State cruised. Kudos to the Missouri staff as a tweet was sent out alluding to this possibility before the weekend’s duals (they also wrestled Northern Iowa). Fans weren’t blindsided by O’Toole’s absence Sunday afternoon. Sweet Lou! Late in the first semester, the news out of Binghamton indicated that assistant coach Louie DePrez hadn’t hung up his singlet for good, as he intended to come back and use his final year of NCAA eligibility competing for the Bearcats at 197 lbs. That’s a cool enough story; however, what makes it better is the fact that DePrez may be as good as ever. Even though DePrez’s season started in late-December, he’s managed to squeeze in 20 matches and has won 19 of them. DePrez entered Sunday’s dual finale with Cornell on a nine-match winning streak, a span that included eight bonus-point wins. DePrez added to his win streak by downing returning All-American Jacob Cardenas, 7-3. That win likely bumps DePrez up a few slots from his current ranking (#9) and probably gives him the second seed heading into the EIWA Championships. Hidlay Hits the Century Mark in Rivalry Win Going back to Friday night, NC State and Virginia Tech wrote another chapter in the history of their growing rivalry. Though Virginia Tech won four of the first five matches - including a top-ten upset at 184 lbs; the Wolfpack rallied to win the final five and take the dual 20-12. The turnaround was started by the Wolfpack talisman Trent Hidlay, who had an 18-3 technical fall. Not only was it Hidlay’s last match in Reynolds Coliseum, but also his 100th career victory. After Hidlay, NC State came out on top of four close matches to get the win. One key in this rivalry has been the home mat advantage. The host school has won each of the last five meetings between these teams. After Hidlay raised the roof and gave the home crowd something to cheer about the tide definitely turned. Riding to a perfect MAC record Friday night, Rider put the finishing touches on a perfect conference season by defeating Cleveland State 23-12. The Broncs 8-0 mark in MAC matches gave them the conference’s East Division Dual Championship. Colton Washleski (157) and Michael Wilson (174) both earned wins over opponents who had previously qualified for nationals. Heavyweight David Szuba put an exclamation point on the victory with a 16-2 major decision over #26 Daniel Bucknavich, who hadn’t suffered a loss since mid-November. Rider…rides into the postseason with three wrestlers in the national rankings and a few others on the cusp.

  5. This weekend, the second full week high school state tournament season was excellent. States like Missouri, New York, Oklahoma and Wisconsin held their much-anticipated season-ending tournaments - along with plenty of others. Though it isn't "technically" a state tournament, the National Prep Championships also were conducted. As these tournaments conclude, it begs the question, "how did my favorite team's recruits fare?" In some smaller states, it's almost a given that your college-bound studs are collecting another state title, while in the power states, with the deepest talent pools, such achievements are not guaranteed. Either way, we've combed through results from all of the state tournaments that have taken place thus far to find out how everyone's recruits have finished. We will update this article each week as more results become official. If you do not see a recruit that should be added, please fill out our commitment form or email me at earl@matscouts.com . 7. Just over two weeks ago, the sky appeared to be falling in Iowa City if you were an Iowa wrestling fan. The Hawkeyes were fresh off of a 29-6 drubbing to Penn State and had dropped back-to-back Big Ten duals to Michigan and the Nittany Lions. That same weekend Oklahoma State crushed a solid South Dakota State squad to run their record to a perfect 13-0 record. With an undefeated Cowboy team looming on the final weekend of the season, it appeared as if Iowa was on the precipice of its first three-loss season since 2017-18. But, if you’ve followed the Iowa/Oklahoma State rivalry for any length of time, you’d know to expect the unexpected. In front of a sold-out, partisan Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Oklahoma, it was Iowa who struck first. In a battle between top-12 ranked competitors, it was Iowa’s #4 Drake Ayala who drew first blood when he locked up a cradle and put #12 Troy Spratley on his back in sudden victory in the first bout of the day at 125 lbs. Iowa would take three of the first five matches to hold a 9-6 advantage heading into the break. 141 lbs and 157 lbs featured bouts between top-ten opponents, and in both instances, Iowa prevailed. Second-ranked Real Woods got the bouts only takedown in a 4-1 victory over Tagen Jamison at 141. Jared Franek had three during his 10-4 win over Teague Travis. The halftime break did not halt Iowa’s momentum as they picked up wins in the next two bouts with Michael Caliendo (165 lbs) and Patrick Kennedy (174 lbs). Caliendo won a rematch of the 2023 NCAA seventh-place bout when he downed Izzak Olejnik, 7-2. It was nearly identical to his win in that contest (6-2). Kennedy’s 12-3 major decision win over Brayden Thompson. With Oklahoma State capable of winning the final three bouts, Kennedy’s extra point looked as if it could be a deciding factor. The Hawkeyes led 16-6 after his impressive showing. In a dual full of potential heroes for the Hawkeyes, none may have been bigger than Zach Glazier at 197 lbs. A fifth-year wrestler who has been a full-time starter for just the first time, Glazier once again clinched the dual for the Hawkeyes. In marquee matchups against Iowa State and Nebraska, Glazier’s victory locked up wins for Iowa. Glazier, who only has one loss on the season, used a takedown in the final stanza to get by #16 Luke Surber, 4-1. With the dual in hand, there was no pressure on Iowa’s true freshman Ben Kueter at 285 lbs. The two-sport star cooly put the finishing touches on an impressive team win for the Hawkeyes by downing #11 Konner Doucet, 5-1. Hawkeye head coach Tom Brands has some decisions to make during the off week before the Big Ten Championships, as Gabe Arnold (184 lbs) and Kueter both look like they could challenge for the NCAA podium as true freshmen. Also, the on-again-off-again status of the 133 lbers Brody Teske and Cullan Schriever seems far from resolved after today’s dual. Teske got the call today and fell to Oklahoma State star Daton Fix, 7-2. While it was a loss, it was one of Teske’s better performances of the season. Speaking of Fix, he got a nice send-off from the home crowd as today’s dual marked his final appearance in Stillwater. Overall, the Hawkeys took seven of ten matches from their hated rivals and silenced a sold-out crowd. That should make even the most hardened Hawkeye fan smile for a day.
