Have we caught our collective breath as a wrestling community? Those Sunday night megaduals are something else! I’d love to see more of that in the future, especially after football season is over.
If you missed Oklahoma State against Iowa, it was one of the best dual of the year and it easily lived up to the hype. Many expected the 184 lb bout to play a pivotal role in the team result and that ended up being accurate. The freshman against the senior star is always a good storyline for me. Both Angelo Ferrari and Dustin Plott acquitted themselves well, but a star was born in Ferrari. Or maybe confirmed.
Iowa finished the regular season the same way they finished the 2023-24 campaign - by handing Oklahoma State their only dual loss of the year. Tom Brands is now responsible for David Taylor’s first dual loss as the Cowboys head coach. I’m sure Brands heard the rumblings over the last nine months about how Taylor could be building the next dynasty in college wrestling and said “Not so fast.”
Here are five takeaways from the candidate for “Dual of the Year.”
1. Angelo Ferrari is ready to go….right now!
This is probably obvious to anyone who watched Sunday’s dual, but Angelo Ferrari has proven he can compete with the best wrestlers at 184 lbs in some pretty high-intensity environments. Ferrari’s only loss came to Carter Starocci in Iowa’s dual with Penn State, but it was by a 3-1 final score, which represents Starocci’s only non-bonus point win of the season. On Sunday, he took out returning NCAA runner-up Dustin Plott in sudden victory.
