Looks like the Mirasola’s would fit into OkSt lineup very nicely. And Zach Ryder for that matter. Hell, might as well throw Braden Davis into the mix in Stillwater.
Two accomplished this feat in 2025, Figueroa and Alirez. Both went 1-2. What happened to these guys this year? And how often has this happened in the past?
Totally disagree with the OP. I thought majority of the matches were fantastic. And pretty awesome that 8 out of the 10 champs this year were first-time champs, which is pretty incredible considering 7/10 weight classes had at least 1 returning champ in the mix.
Uetake, no doubt about it.
However, let’s debate the more modern era with guys that had 4 seasons to compete in, but only won 3. Who was the best of them? For me, my short list is between Zain, Nolf, Nickal, Ruth, Spencer.
I’m gonna say Jason Nolf.
Agree with all of this except the last statement. For me, Sanderson’s collegiate career can only be eclipsed by a wrestler who wins 4 NCAA titles, goes undefeated, and wins 4 Hodge trophies.
I’m not overly familiar with Uetake’s career. If he went 3/3 and was undefeated, I’d put him even with Sanderson, and above Dake.
For me, I would say 5 is relevant only because he accepted the burden of pursuing it. As history has shown, there are no guarantees. There is a constant emergence of new talent that challenges the great ones. There is the risk of injury. If he doesn’t win #5, I have to think his legacy is tarnished. So there has to be some relevance to him going for it.
However, if he does win #5, I still rank Dake ahead of him because for me, going 4/4 without a red-shirt and at 4 different weight classes is a more impressive accomplishment than going 5/5.
With this being the last year of wrestlers being able to take advantage of a 5th year of eligibility due to the Pandemic, I wanted to remember which senior D1 wrestlers were highly likely to win an NCAA title in 2020 had the tournament taken place. The one that comes to mind first was Vincenzo Joseph. Which other seniors that year had a solid shot at top of the podium?
Nickal had some interesting ones, some cringe worthy.
Remember him saying something to the effect…this is what we do at Penn State, we win national titles.
