  8. Des Moines, IA -- TakeDown Radio, a ten year old program on KXNO 1460 AM, Des Moines Sports Station, will celebrate Black History Month by dedicating a special two hour program exploring the black experience throughout the history of amateur wrestling in America. The Saturday, February 16 program includes interviews with many of the athletes, coaches, and officials responsible for advancing the role of African Americans within the sport. "TakeDown Radio has long been committed to acknowledging and celebrating diversity. We believe this program provides the ideal opportunity to reflect on the rich contributions of African Americans to wrestling, sports in general, and America as a whole", stated Scott Casber, TakeDown Radio founder and on-air commentator. This is the first time an entire TDR program is dedicated to a single topic. Also, the program is being filmed and will become part of a traveling exhibit with the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, based in Stillwater, OK. The roster of interviews, conducted in TDR's Des Moines based Clear Channel studio and by phone, is a virtual who's who of the top Black athletes participating in the sport over the past 50 years. While wrestling is generally considered among the oldest organized sports in the world, African Americans really didn't compete in the sport until nearly the beginning of the 20th century. Restrictions in many high school associations prohibited blacks from wrestling as recent as the 1950's. The advancements that were made since then are tremendous and wrestling now ranks second to track and field in terms of the total number of titles held by African Americans. Some of the personalities on the Saturday, 9:05 AM to 11:00 AM program include. * Carl Adams-Three time NCAA All American, two time national champion, and current coach at Boston University. * Mike Allen- Recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for Officials from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and the first Black official to earn the award. * Chris Campbell-Two time NCAA Champion and Olympic Bronze Medal winner. * Bobby Douglas- Coaching legend with 429 dual meet wins to his credit. Former Iowa State head coach, as well as leading Arizona State to a NCAA title * Kevin Jackson- Olympic freestyle Gold Medal Winner * Leroy Kemp-Three time NCAA Champion and three time World Champion * Kerry McCoy-Two time NCAA Champion, Olympic Bronze Medal winner, and current Coach at Stanford * Simon Roberts-First Black Iowa High School State Champion, holds Big Ten and NCAA titles. Wrestling, long a sports mainstay in Iowa, has gained growth and increased interest recently. Arkansas added over 40 high school wrestling programs last year, Grandview College announced the formulation of a new program, and international interest in American wrestling continues to rise. "Our guys need to be ready to go and be strong out there. I don't think we've wrestled our best yet as a team, so we've got work to do. Even though we weren't hitting on all cylinders today and looked sloppy at times, we won some close matches." Iowa jumped out to a 21-0 lead with wins at the first five weights. Tyler Grayson's takedown on the edge with seven seconds remaining was the difference in a 3-1 decision over 19th-ranked Matt Moley at 157 pounds. Grayson and Moley traded escapes in the second and third period for the only scoring before Grayson shot in with 30 seconds left in the third period. Both Grayson and Moley struggled for control in the closing seconds before Grayson was able to score the decisive takedown. The 165-pound bout also was decided in the closing seconds, as Trevor Stewart tallied a reversal with just less than 30 seconds remaining to defeat Rickey Schmelyun, 4-2. The match was scoreless entering the third period, but Stewart took a 2-0 lead with a reversal early in the period. 21. TEMPE, Ariz. -– It may be cold in Iowa, but No. 8 Iowa State brought the heat in Sunday's dual at Arizona State, winning 32-3. Three ISU grapplers, No. 6 David Zabriskie (HWT), No. 12 Mitch Mueller (149) and No. 6 Cyler Sanderson (157), scored major decisions and No. 20 David Bertolino recorded a technical fall at 197 pounds. The Cyclones' record stands at 14-4 with two dual meets remaining. Arizona State slips to 9-7. Iowa State will play host to Missouri next Sunday at 2 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum. Iowa State leads the all-time series 21-6 and has won four straight duals against the Sun Devils and two straight in Tempe. "I think we wrestled real well today," ISU head coach Cael Sanderson said. "I am happy with the way things are going and we are making progress. We've been doing a great job on the mat, in tie-ups and all-around. This weekend was good for us. We are right where we want to be. We had last weekend off and we're ready to move into that last stretch of the season at home against Missouri and Nebraska and then take it into the Big 12 meet." The Cyclones totally dominated the match, netting 35 takedown to Arizona State's one. Combined with Friday night's 40-0 win over Oregon State, Iowa State had 67 takedowns while allowing just two over the weekend. No. 6 David Zabriskie notched his fifth major decision of the season with a 12-3 win over Kenny Lester to open the dual at heavyweight. The Cyclone put the first points on the board with a reversal seven seconds into the second period. Zabriskie then unleashed his rath on Lester in the final two minutes of action with four takedowns. The sophomore from Branchville, N.J., moves to 22-4 on the year. "I actually like starting the duals," Zabriskie said. "I don't normally get to watch my teammates, so that was nice today. Even though I wrestled first, it didn't change my mentality. I wanted to wrestle my match. The first period was slow. He [Lester] was able to use his weight and strength in the first period, but he got tired after that and it made it easier for me to get under and finish the takedowns." Ranked 12th-nationally, Mueller extended his win streak to five with 20-7 major decision of Jarred Trulson. Mueller held a 2-1 advantage over Trulson at the end of the first period. He then added to his lead with a pair of double-leg takedowns in the second period, but it was the third period when the Iowa City, Iowa, native blitzed the Sun Devil with five takedowns and a two-point nearfall. The sophomore has won back-to-back bouts via major decision and has six this season. "Mitch is doing a great job," Sanderson said of his 149-pounder. "His confidence is high and when his confidence is high he is tough as nails. He's the type of wrestler that is going to get better as the season progresses and that's exactly what he's doing." Sanderson mirrored Mueller's score with a 20-7 major decision of his own over Alex Pavlenko at 157 pounds. Sanderson scored two takedowns in the first and second periods, respectively, and like Mueller, went on an offensive mission in the final two minutes of action. Two seconds into the final period, Sanderson was able to reverse Pavlenko and then attacked on his feet with four takedowns. Now leading the team in wins, the Heber City, Utah, native holds a record of 25-3 and has seven major decisions in his sophomore campaign. Bertolino closed out the dual with an 18-2 technical fall in 6:57 of Thor Moen. Bertolino wasted no time in scoring, getting a takedown in the bout's opening 10 seconds and was awarded backpoints with two three-point nearfalls. The Missouri dual (Feb. 17) dual will be available to Clone Zone members on cyclones.com along with live stats. Iowa Public Television is slated to broadcast the dual live.
  22. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- No. 9 Illinois won five of the first six bouts at No. 17 Indiana on Sunday and a 4-3 win by Roger Smith-Bergsrud against No. 12 Matt Coughlin after two overtime rounds sealed the 23-9 victory for the Illini. Illinois improves to 11-2 overall, 3-1 in the Big Ten at the halfway point of the conference slate. "Overall, it was a good performance," Illinois coach Mark Johnson said. "Top to bottom we had a lot of good matches, but a couple of guys had slip-ups. We just need to make sure we can get all of our guys hitting on the same day." With the match starting at 197, No. 13 Patrick Bond became Illinois' sixth 20-win grappler this season by controlling the match against Eric Cameron and earning an 8-3 decision. No. 17 John Wise then recovered from a tough loss on Friday with a 9-1 major decision over Nate Everhart at heavyweight. "We've been getting out of the blocks well lately, regardless of which weight class we start at," Johnson said. "Bond continued to wrestle well and Wise actually dominated his guy, so that was good to see." At 125, Indiana's second-ranked Angel Escobedo remained perfect on the season with a 9-2 win against No. 9 Gabe Flores, cutting the Illini lead to 7-3. But No. 9 Jimmy Kennedy earned a tight 4-3 decision over No. 12 Andrae Hernandez and No. 10 Ryan Prater scored a major decision over Scott Kelly with an 10-2 win, pushing Illinois' lead to 14-3. Grant Paswall notched a 12-7 win over Kurt Kinser at 149, giving the Illini their biggest lead of the day at 17-3 before No. 1 Mike Poeta was upset for the second time in as many weeks, dropping a 3-2 decision to No. 8 Brandon Becker. But Roger Smith-Bergsrud picked up his teammates at 165, pulling out a 4-3 victory over Coughlin with a one-second riding time advantage after the second overtime round. It was Smith-Bergsrud's first win over a ranked opponent this season and his first since outlasting Ohio State's 10th-ranked Chris Vondruska in sudden-victory time on Feb. 18, 2007. "Coughlin really wasn't getting close to scoring on Roger except at the end of the first overtime because he never shot," Johnson said. "Roger got in a few more shots, but he won on the second ride-out even though they had some clock problems. Duane Goldman, Indiana's coach, said Roger won because he had more riding time and he showed a lot of class by doing that." No. 16 John Dergo (174) cruised to an 8-2 victory over Trevor Perry to complete a 2-0 weekend for the sophomore, giving him wins in six of his last seven bouts and a 22-8 season record. Sean Washington tried to regain momentum for the Peacocks after Sundgren's win by pinning Tom Anderson (Belview) just over a minute into the match to get six team points back for the Peacocks. Derek Skala (Owatonna) however responded by weathering a late comeback attempt by Brady Hakeman for a 9-6 decision to bump the Husky lead back up to 19-9. It was more Huskies at 197 as eighth-ranked Nick Wilkes (Onamia) controlled his entire match with Matt Norton as he recorded an 18-3, technical fall victory over the Peacock junior.
