  2. LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- After jumping out to a 14-0 lead after three matches, the University of Pittsburgh wrestling team cruised to victory in its second Eastern Wrestling League match of the year, defeating Lock Haven University 30-9 here at Thomas Field House. The Panthers tallied four bonus-point wins on the night, led by sophomore Ethan Headlee's pin in the 165-pound match. After a forfeit in the 125 pound match, the Panthers (2-3, 2-0 EWL) built their lead with back-to-back major decisions from Jimmy Conroy and Ty Nauman. Conroy was an 8-0 winner at 133 over Billy Ashnault while Nauman upped his win total to 19 with a 14-5 win over Zach Kell in the 141-pound bout. Matt Fittery put Lock Haven (5-6-1, 0-1 EWL) on the board with a 6-1 decision over Mark Powell in the 149-pound match, but the Eagles would not gain anymore ground as Pitt went on to take the ensuing three matches. Phil Sorrentino was a 2-1 winner by decision over Ollie Cooperwood at 157, bringing the score to 17-3 in favor of the Blue and Gold. Headlee kept pace with Nauman, earning his 19th win of the year by pinfall, also tying him for the team lead in falls this season with seven. David Sullivan's 11-3 major decision over Travis Stem pushed Pitt's lead to 27-3, the largest lead of the night. Back-to-back decisions at 184 and 197 for Lock Haven closed the gap, but the damage was already done. A.J. Hunte finished off the night with a 3-2 win over Gabe Murtoff in the heavyweight match. Hunte recorded his first dual win of the season after wrestling up a class from his usual 197-pound slot. Pitt returns home for a Sunday afternoon dual with No. 6 Central Michigan University. The Chippewas and Panthers will commence action inside Fitzgerald Field House at 2 p.m.

He will manage the daily operations, recruiting and training of full-time resident athletes in the program and also train those who attend on a short term basis. "We are excited to take another step in building America's freestyle wrestling team," said National Freestyle Coach Zeke Jones. "Brandon is an Olympic champion and has all the things we are looking for as a National Coach. He has character, passion and a strong work ethic. Brandon will be a great leader of the program and the athletes will enjoy working with him. As a former resident athlete, he understands the structure, demands, benefits and environment at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. He exemplifies the holistic approach, which includes winning gold medals and representing our nation with dignity and excellence." Slay won a gold medal at 76 kg/167.5 lbs. at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. He upset Olympic and World Champion Bouvaisa Saitiev of Russia in the pool competition in Sydney. Saitiev has gone on to win three Olympic gold medals. Slay won the 2000 U.S. National Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., and claimed the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, held in his native Dallas, Texas. He was a U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete for two full seasons when he became an Olympic gold medalist. Among the international competitions that Slay won included the test event for the 2000 Olympics, the 1999 Five Continents Cup in Sydney, Australia. "I am really excited about the opportunity to work with Zeke Jones, Bill Zadick and the new developmental coach to be hired as a team to develop the vision that will lead to success in 2012 at the London Olympics," said Slay. "I look forward to creating the coaching synergy to train U.S. freestyle wrestlers to win many more World and Olympic medals." Slay's background as a past USOTC resident athlete will help him in his new position. "I have a passion for the U.S. Olympic Training Center because I went through it as an athlete," said Slay. "I believe one of the main reasons I attained my goals was that I left the college environment for the USOTC. I was a 100% freestyle wrestler with 100% professional freestyle coaches. I know that the USOTC is not the only place where a wrestler can train to be an Olympic champion. Athletes can excel in other training situations. However, I do believe it is one of the ideal locations to develop champions."

  16. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 6-ranked Ohio State wrestling team (8-1; 0-0 Big Ten) wrestled back to a fifth-place finish Sunday at the 2009 National Duals, defeating No. 11 Minnesota, 25-12, at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. After falling to No. 3 in Cornell in the quarterfinals Saturday, the Buckeyes recorded victories against No. 5 Missouri, No. 16 Boise State and Minnesota to earn fifth-place. Wrestling at 174 pounds, junior Dave Rella scored Ohio State's biggest win with a 13-3 major decision over Golden Gopher Kaleb Young. In three periods of work, Rella, a Youngstown, Ohio, native recorded five takedowns. The Scarlet and Gray also received wins from No. 8-ranked Reece Humphrey, No. 14 J Jaggers, No. 4 Lance Palmer, No. 4 Colt Sponseller and No. 2 Mike Pucillo. At 133, Humphrey earned a close 5-4 decision to upset Minnesota's fourth-ranked Jayson Ness to put Ohio State on the board after sophomore Nikko Triggas dropped an 8-3 decision to No. 8 Zach Sanders at 125. Jaggers followed with a 7-2 decision at 141 pounds. To secure the win, the senior tallied one take down, two escapes and a three-point nearfall in the upset over the Gopher's No. 8-ranked Mike Thorn. The winning continued for the Buckeyes with Palmer pinned Minnesota's Joe Grygelko in 2:35. The Gophers earned a win of their own when Tyler Safratowich decided Buckeye Jason Johnstone in a close 6-4 match. Sophomore Sponseller would put Ohio State right back in the meet defeating 18th-ranked Scott Glasser in a 4-0 decision. Pucillo earned the final points for the Scarlet and Gray, pinning Brent Eidenschink in 4:33.
  17. CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- No. 2 Iowa State held on late against No. 4 Nebraska to seal a third-place finish at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals at the UNI Dome Sunday afternoon. The Cyclones and the Huskers split the 10 contested weights. The deciding point was earned from strong bonus-point performances by Tyler Clark (125), Nick Fanthorpe (133) and Nick Gallick (141). The third-place team finish marks the Cyclones best National Duals performance since winning the title in 2000. "We are close," Iowa State head coach Cael Sanderson. "I know how we are progressing and it is not an observation that you make in one day. I am with (his wrestlers) every day and over a period of years with most of them. There are definitely things to work on and will we be addressing those." In a marquee matchup between Nebraska's No. 1-ranked Craig Brester and ISU's third-ranked Jake Varner, the Cyclone was successful with the win by decision, 10-3. Varner added a cushion to his lead late in the third by scoring a three-point nearfall. ISU's Tyler Clark put the Cyclones up 6-0 early in the team score by pinning Nebraska's Andrew Pokorny in 3:58. Clark held a 5-0 advantage heading into the second period. Following the pin, Cyclone 133-pounder Nick Fanthorpe recorded a major decision over Matt Vacanti of Nebraska, 12-4. At 141 pounds, second-ranked Nick Gallick major decisioned NU's Curtis Salazar, 11-2. At 149 pounds, Iowa Stater Mitch Mueller won by decision, 7-5, against NU's Robert Sanders. No. 2 Iowa State fell at the hands of No. 3 Cornell 22-15 in the semifinal round of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals.
  18. HAMPTON, Va. -- The No. 13 Oklahoma State wrestling team split its two matches at the Virginia Duals Saturday to finish third at the event. The Cowboys (11-3 overall) lost to No. 12 Central Michigan, 17-14 in the semifinals Saturday afternoon, but bounced back to hand No. 15 Edinboro a 24-12 defeat in the third-place dual Saturday night. A trio of Cowboys finished the weekend with perfect 4-0 records, as 133-pounder Chris Notte picked up two wins over ranked opponents along the way, with 197-pounder Clayton Foster and heavyweight Jared Rosholt dominating each of their four opponents. Against Edinboro, Chris Notte picked up a big win for the Cowboys at 133 pounds when he scored a 6-4 victory over No. 16 Ricky Duble. Deadlocked at 4-4 at the end of three periods and through the first sudden victory period, Notte and Duble went into a tie-break period, where Notte was able to turn Duble to his back for a two-point nearfall and secure the win to cap a very productive weekend. Luke Silver was also an upset winner for the Pokes against Edinboro, emerging victorious from a 7-6 dogfight with No. 16 Torsten Gillespie at 149 pounds. After bagging a key takedown as time expired in the second period to take a 5-3 lead into the third, Silver gave up the escape to start the period. Silver scored another takedown to take a 7-4 lead, but was slapped with a penalty point for locking his hands to bring the score to 7-5. Silver cut Gillespie loose to bring the score to 7-6, but Gillespie was unable to solve Silver with short time remaining. OSU 165-pounder Brandon Mason erased any hope the Fighting Scots may have had when he pinned Chris Harunka at the 2:39 mark to claim his third win by fall in four bouts during the weekend. Mason scored an early takedown, then turned Harunka to his back for four separate three-point nearfalls to open up a 14-0 first-period lead. Mason turned him to his back a fifth time and would have won by technical fall, but he was able to flatten Harunka completely to win by a dominating fall. Against 12th-ranked Central Michigan in the semifinals earlier in the day, the Cowboys got a pair of major decision wins from Clayton Foster and Jared Rosholt and a 5-3 sudden victory upset win from Notte over No. 13 Conor Beebe, but it was not enough to beat the Chippewas. The key to the dual was the fact that the Cowboys were unable to win enough of the swing matches that could have gone either way, as Obenson Blanc lost a 3-1 decision in the tie-break period to No. 9 Scotti Sentes, Jamal Parks lost a 7-6 decision at the hands of Tony D'Alie, Brandon Mason lost a 5-3 decision and Jared Shelton dropped a 6-4 decision to Vince DiDona.
