Week four of the college wrestling season has already gotten off to a strong start. Indiana made a frantic comeback in their final three matches (tech, fall, major) to hold off a frisky Columbia team, 23-21. Later in the evening, #12 Illinois continued to impress and pushed their record to 4-0 with a 23-14 win over #13 Missouri. We’ll have even more fireworks for sure as one of college wrestling’s top rivalries is renewed on Saturday. Before that, we have two duals with ranked teams colliding tonight, along with three others on Sunday. Oh yeah, and some individual bracketed tournaments. There’s lots to watch (here’s how and where to watch) so we’ve highlighted some of the key storylines to watch over the next three days. The Battle of the Mountaineers #20 West Virginia travels south to meet SoCon power Appalachian State in a non-conference meeting between a pair of schools that share the same mascot. This matchup may not end up as strong as it initially was, on paper, as Appalachian State has lost 141 lb starter Sean Carter for the year with an injury. In his season debut, Carter upset two-time All-American Sam Latona (Virginia Tech). Word is that Appalachian State might also be without the services of 2024 184 lb conference champion Tomas Brooker for an extended time because of an injury. Even with injuries mounting, the 165 lb match is very important as it will feature #3 Peyton Hall against #8 Will Miller. Gable’s Return Tonight we should get the first glimpse in over two years of Gable Steveson in a Minnesota singlet. Last week, Minnesota announced that the two-time Hodge Trophy winner and Olympic champion was returning to use his final year of eligibility. He’ll have the first chance to knock off the rust against North Dakota State’s Andrew Blackburn-Forst. Shrek and Wrestling? Maryland hosts in-state foe Morgan State tonight and the theme is Shrek. The first 100 students will receive Shrek-themed Maryland wrestling shirts. The first 100 fans will receive Shrek ears. That’s it. That’s the message. Rutgers/Virginia Tech Storylines Last year, Rutgers and Virginia Tech renewed their dual series in a fun contest that saw the Hokies travel to Jersey Mike’s Arena and come away with a 19-12 victory. Now, Rutgers will hit the road and hope to return the favor. There are plenty of quality storylines in this meeting. Virginia Tech has always recruited New Jersey well and is expected to send out New Jersey natives at their bookends. Eddie Ventresca at 125 and Jimmy Mullen at heavyweight. Conversely, Rutgers has a Virginia native at 174 lbs in All-American Jackson Turley who hasn’t wrestled in his home state since graduating from St. Christopher’s in 2019. There’s also a good all-freshman match on tap at 157 lbs with Rafael Hipolito and Conner Harer. At 184 lbs, Brian Soldano typically throws the kitchen sink at his competition and TJ Stewart will be happy to oblige in a potentially wild affair. Whoever Virginia Tech sends out at 197 lbs (Andy Smith/Sonny Sasso) should make for a good match with John Poznanski and we have a top-ten clash at 133 lbs with Dylan Shawver and Connor McGonagle. Spratley’s Big Weekend It’s not crazy to think that come Tuesday, Oklahoma State 125 lber Troy Spratley could be the top-ranked 125 lber in the country. Tonight, Spratley will face second-ranked Jore Volk of Wyoming. The two met last year in the Big 12 finals and Volk prevailed in sudden victory. Two days later, Oklahoma State will host Arizona State and top-ranked, returning NCAA champion Richie Figueroa. If I had to guess, this match may not happen. Figueroa appeared to be injured at the Daktronics Open when South Dakota State’s Brady Roark got in on a leg attack. He laid on the mat and was attended to - but then continued to compete. After a second takedown, the notably limited Figueroa and the ASU staff stopped the match. If Figueroa has something lingering from that match, I don’t expect ASU to let him wrestle someone of Spratley’s caliber. But one can hope. Cornell’s Dual Debut Two weeks ago, we got a peek at #11 Cornell at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic. They have a bit of a new look Brett Ungar moving up to 133 lbs to replace two-time champion Vito Arujau and Greg Diakomihalis sliding in at 125 lbs. Cornell also has tough freshmen at 174 and 197 lbs with Simon Ruiz and Mikey Dellagatta, respectively. Cornell will be in dual action for the first time Saturday afternoon as they host Buffalo. With all due respect, I don’t expect Buffalo to challenge the Big Red at this point in Donnie Vinson’s tenure, but it will be a good measuring stick for each program, in their own way. Buffalo will also stick around to wrestle in the Big Red Invitational on Sunday. I’m also eager to see if All-American Meyer Shapiro will compete. He defaulted out of the Journeymen event with an apparent head injury. For those looking to see the “full” Cornell lineup, that will have to wait until the end of the first semester. Veterans Julian Ramirez and Chris Foca only have one semester of eligibility remaining due to Ivy League rules. Classically Navy Mid-to-late-November is always the setting for the Navy Classic and it takes place this Saturday. In addition to the hosts, Big Ten schools Indiana and Nebraska will be in attendance. Oregon State comes in from the West Coast - as Nate Engel got his college coaching career started in Annapolis. Provided everyone who we expect to wrestle actually wrestles, a few weights to watch are 141 lbs, 157 lbs, and 197 lbs. At 141 we could see #4 Brock Hardy (Nebraska) vs. #9 Josh Koderhandt (Navy) At 157, how about #3 Antrell Taylor (Nebraska) vs. #5 Peyten Kellar (Ohio). At 197 lbs, #9 Trey Munoz (Oregon State) and tough freshman #26 Camden McDanel (Nebraska). I’m also eager to see #23 Maximo Renteria (Oregon State) against the wrestler above him in the rankings #22 Jacob Moran (Indiana) and possibly #3 Caleb Smith (Nebraska). Cy-Hawk We covered Iowa vs Iowa State in our dual preview here For a historic look at Iowa/Iowa State in the NCAA finals try here Adam Hall’s Homecoming Utah Valley’s Adam Hall comes back to Raleigh and the place he called home for nine years on Pat Popolizio’s staff at NC State. The Wolverines challenging the #7 ranked Wolfpack is a stretch at this point, but there could be some solid matches at 125, 133, 141, and 165 lbs. Philly Special Another event that is penciled into the calendar at this time of year is Penn’s Keystone Classic. The Quakers have a really solid lineup and much of it will be intact and ready to roll as they host a solid contingent of challengers. Virginia Tech will send most of their starters. Two of the top teams from the MAC, Central Michigan and Lock Haven, will be in action. Harvard also had a couple of wrestlers that shined at the Journeymen Classic. We’ll get a second look at them. There are a few weights that appear to be unsettled (or with multiple good options) for Penn, so there could be some de facto wrestle-offs at 133 and 149 - among others. Black Knight Invitational Last week, we got the first glimpse at the three-time defending national champion Penn State Nittany Lions. Now, they’ll be in action in a bracketed tournament at West Point for the Black Knight Invitational. Penn State also has some weights that need sorting out, so we’ll be on the lookout for a potential Alex Facundo/Tyler Kasak match at 157 lbs and Lucas Cochran/Josh Barr at 197 lbs. This will also be the first time that we potentially see the number one overall recruit in the Class of 2024, Luke Lilledahl, against ranked competition. Army’s Charlie Farmer is currently ranked #21 and Long Island’s Robbie Sagaris has proven to be a tough out. In the non-Penn State portion of the tournament, I’m looking forward to a potential semifinal at 141 lbs between #28 Todd Carter (Gardner-Webb) and #29 Braden Basile (Army West Point). Carter already has a win over Basile this year and is 2-0 with two wins over national qualifiers. Someone who was not in the preseeds that could do some damage is #27 Remy Cotton (Michigan State) at 197 lbs. The seeded portion of that bracket includes the Penn State duo (Cochran/Barr), teammate Kael Wisler, and #33 Austin Kolhofer (Army West Point). It’s a solid bracket with no overwhelming favorite. Can Gable pull the Upset? Sunday has a battle of All-American heavyweights as Taye Ghadiali and the Campbell Camels hit the road and travel to Minnesota. Minnesota means Gable Steveson. If you haven’t used WrestleStat’s Dual or Individual comparison feature you’re missing out it’s great. You can project how two teams will do in a dual, based on the individual wrestler’s history. It will generate all of the common opponents between the two wrestlers and highlight any head-to-head meetings. However, every so often you’ll get a random prediction, that may not seem to make sense. That was the case last Sunday as this was the prediction for a potential Steveson/Ghadiali matchup. Since then, it has been tweaked and it shows Steveson as the winner. But it’s fun to think about Gable pulling the big upset! Rider’s Road Trip Rider will head to the midwest this weekend as they face Northern Illinois on Friday and Wisconsin on Sunday. The Northern Illinois matchup could be one between MAC darkhorses this year. In the preseason, Northern Illinois was tabbed to finish sixth in the conference and Rider was seventh. I tend to think both schools will do better. Sunday’s dual with Wisconsin is interesting as the Badgers have already lost to a MAC squad this year - Ohio. Using the WrestleStat dual comparison tool, it has Wisconsin holding off Rider, 17-15. One of the swing matches should be at 174 lbs with redshirt freshman Lucas Condon (Wisconsin) - a top 100 recruit against returning national qualifier Michael Wilson of Rider. The Low-Key Match of the Week Iowa/Iowa State will get the hype this week and deservedly so. But #17 South Dakota State at #10 Northern Iowa is a pretty awesome dual in and of itself. The marquee match of the dual is one that features a pair of returning All-Americans at 184 lbs with #2 Parker Keckeisen and #4 Bennett Berge. Despite being in the same Big 12 weight class last season - and both making the NCAA podium - the two did not meet in 2023-24. In addition to 184 lbs, I’m eager to see the match at 197 lbs, as well. #8 Zach Glazier and #15 Wyatt Voelker. The two did not meet last season, but Glazier did major Voelker in 2022-23 when Voelker was a true freshman. I think Voelker takes the next step this season and challenges for a spot on the podium. A win over Glazier would be a step in the right direction. There are also ranked vs ranked matches at 149, 157, 165, and 174 lbs in this dual. The new Big 12 rivalry With conference realignment continuing to rearrange everything we’ve known about college sports, I present to you a new conference matchup between #21 Arizona State and #4 Oklahoma State. Arizona State moved the Big 12 in the offseason and will presumably be a fixture on the Oklahoma State schedule. Earlier we mentioned the possibility of a Figueroa/Spratley match at 125 lbs and why it may not happen. #33 Cael Hughes was a highly-regarded prospect. I’ll be interested to see how he stacks up to #19 Julian Chlebove. Finally, at heavyweight, we have a pair of multi-time AA’s in #3 Wyatt Hendrickson and #5 Cohlton Schultz. The two have been in the same 285 lb bracket for the past three years and have never met. It will be a serious contrast of styles. East vs West (PA) East meets West as Lehigh heads across the Pennsylvania Turnpike to take on the Pittsburgh Panthers on Sunday afternoon. As these things sometimes work out in duals, the strengths of these two teams don’t appear to match up to create many monster matchups, but it’s still a quality dual. The headline bout coming at 197 lbs with two-time All-American Michael Beard and sophomore Mac Stout. In last year’s dual, it was all-Beard as he crushed in an 18-3 technical fall. Big picture, I’m looking at how this Lehigh lineup develops. As of now, they seem intent on redshirting Luke Stanich (141) and Max Brignola (165). Both have been impressive this year. Add in heavyweight transfer Owen Trephan to a lineup that includes #1 Ryan Crookham and Beard. That’s some serious firepower that could be capable of a high NCAA finish. Will the Lehigh staff stick to their plan? This year’s underdog team? Last year, Little Rock was the darling of the NCAA wrestling world with a dual meet title in the Pac-12 followed by a pair of freshmen making the NCAA podium in Kansas City. Now, we just expect them to be good. Neil Erisman’s team is currently ranked #16 in the country but will get a bit of a test from #25 Northwestern. Northwestern is a team that hasn’t been talked about much this year. The 2023-24 season was not kind to the Wildcats as they went 1-9 in dual competition and sent only three wrestlers to the national tournament. That was then and this is now. Northwestern re-added two-time All-American Chris Cannon and they have redshirt freshmen Dedrick Navarro (125) and Sam Cartella (149) showing signs of being very strong contributors. Those wrestlers plus returners like Trevor Chumbley (157), Maxx Mayfield (165), and Evan Bates (197) make this a good dual team. Will they beat Penn State or Iowa? No, but they will surprise some people. Maybe Little Rock on Sunday? Blue and Hoo The weekend will close with Michigan against Virginia in the second of two ACC duals for the Wolverines this week. They’ll meet Duke tonight. In this dual, I’m curious to see the middleweights. Michigan’s probable starter Beau Mantanona was lost for the year with an injury. There wasn't a clear-cut replacement for Mantanona so who stepped up? None other than his younger brother, Brock, who was completely dominant over a ranked opponent in Cesar Alvan (Columbia) during Michigan’s most recent dual. Will Sean Bormet’s team continue to trot out the true freshman, Brock? If they were to do so against Virginia, it would make for a strong matchup against #12 Nick Hamilton. A win over Hamilton might signal that Brock continues as the starter and doesn’t redshirt. The next weight, 174 lbs, is another one I’m eager to see. Michigan has veteran Joseph Walker who has seen plenty of action over the years, but never has been their full-time starter. It looks like this is the year. So far, Walker has responded well with a Clarion Open title and a win in the Columbia dual. Facing him is the Cavaliers Rocco Contino. Contino missed the entire 2023-24 season due to injuries and had never appeared in a dual, prior to this season. Contino has won both duals thus far and looks like someone who should be considered for the national rankings. Beating Walker could help him crack the top 33.

In the past when it came to wrestling, sportsbooks would typically only offer lines and odds on the Olympics and maybe sometimes the NCAA Team Championship. Recently though, more and more sportsbooks are starting to offer lines for in season duals, but because of gambling restrictions per state, making lines on individual matches or even on college sports at all are prohibited. Well, in that same vein, a new Fantasy Wrestling venture of mine in the quest to make the sport a little more exciting and enjoyable has been created: WrestlingCents.com. It’s a new fantasy game, mimicking the looks and feel of a sportsbook, but without the risk. Essentially, after signing up for your free account, you are given 300 WrestleCents (WC). You can use these WrestleCents to make picks on available games ranging from duals, individual matches, tournaments, and specials. If you win, great! The WrestlingCents in your wallet will grow. If you lose and go below 100 WC? No problem. Refresh your wallet and get a new 300 WC added after a quick 33 second wait. You never have to deposit any money, you will never run out of FUNds. We have big plans on growing this and making the user experience even better for years to come, but being that this is the first year there will most certainly be issues. Please bear with us and let us know of any problems that may arise. Some other important info to know before playing: The minimum to play any game is 50 WC The maximum to win in any game is 3,000 WC There are no parlays, except for the premade Specials In an individual Match game, you can play the Spread or Win By Pin/Inj/DQ, Moneyline, and over/under (in most games). A win by Pin/Inj/DQ will cause any pick in the spread and over/under of that same game to lose Once a game is played, even if only one pick is made in it, you will not be able to go back and play it again unless it is later changed (ex. Line moves from -4.5 to -5.5, then a user can make a pick on that game again). So if you want to make multiple picks in a game (a spread, moneyline, and over/under), please make them all at the same time. If a matchup does not happen, the game will be voided as Did Not Wrestle (DNW) and any WC placed will be refunded At the end of the season, all accounts will be reset to 300 WC for the next season Games are added almost daily during the season and will lock at the time the competition begins. Here's an example of some games ready to play NOW! But hurry, some lock in a few hours! INDIVIDUAL MATCHES: DUALS: TOURNAMENTS: SPECIALS:

Yesterday, we looked ahead to the top-ten clash brewing on Saturday evening in Iowa City, as the second-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes play host to in-state rival #9 Iowa State. Since we’re looking ahead, today, let's go all the way! Let’s look ahead to March and the NCAA Tournament. With two storied programs like Iowa and Iowa State, there has to be plenty of history between these two schools at the NCAA Tournament, right? More specifically, the NCAA finals. Maybe not as much as you’d expect for the NCAA finals. Below you’ll find plenty of fun facts about the schools in the finals, along with results from all of those matches, and finally, some recent history between the schools. The most recent meeting: 2010 - Matt McDonough (Iowa) over Andrew Long (Iowa State) Iowa State’s most recent win(s): 1987 - Bill Kelly (Iowa State) over Brad Penrith (Iowa) Fall 6:31 and Tim Krieger (Iowa State) over Jim Heffernan (Iowa) 1-1, 1-1 Iowa’s first win: 1947 - Joe Scarpello (Iowa) over Glen Brand (Iowa State) 10-6 Iowa State’s first win: 1970 - Jason Smith (Iowa State) over Phil Henning (Iowa) 8-7 NCAA finals pins (2) - Kelly mentioned above and 1983 - Lou Banach (Iowa) over Wayne Cole (Iowa State) Most meetings in one year: 1987 (3) Iowa State’s 2 wins over Iowa in 1987 helped them win their most recent national championship. The Cyclones had 4 total champions and outdistanced Iowa by 25 team points. Only wrestler with multiple NCAA finals wins over the other school: Ed Banach (1980/1983) The Banach twins are responsible for 3 of Iowa’s 12 NCAA finals wins in this series. Only wrestler with multiple NCAA finals losses over the other school: Mike Mann (1982/1983) - both by extremely close margins. Five times an NCAA finals match between these two schools has needed extra time. 2010’s matchup featured a pair of freshmen. Only twice since then have freshmen met in the NCAA finals. 2015 (Tomasello/Moisey), 2016 (Martin/Nickal). These two teams have finished 1-2 in the team race at the NCAA Tournament on seven occasions: 1976, 1978, 1979, 1982, 1987, 1996, 2000. Iowa was on top in six of those instances with 1987 being the only time for ISU. All-time Iowa vs. Iowa State NCAA finals matches 2010: 125 lbs - Matt McDonough (Iowa) over Andrew Long (Iowa State) 3-1 2000: 133 lbs - Eric Juergens (Iowa) over Cody Sanderson (Iowa State) 3-1SV 1997: 150 lbs - Lincoln McIlravy (Iowa) over Chris Bono (Iowa State) 5-3SV 1987: 126 lbs - Bill Kelly (Iowa State) over Brad Penrith (Iowa) Fall 6:31 1987: 150 lbs - Tim Krieger (Iowa State) over Jim Heffernan (Iowa) 1-1, 1-1 1987: 167 lbs - Royce Alger (Iowa) over Kevin Jackson (Iowa State) 10-4 1983: 190lbs - Ed Banach (Iowa) over Mike Mann (Iowa State) 4-3 1983: Unlimited - Lou Banach (Iowa) over Wayne Cole (Iowa State) Fall 2:57 1982: 118 lbs - Barry Davis (Iowa) over Kevin Darkus (Iowa State) 7-5 1982: 190 lbs - Pete Bush (Iowa) over Mike Mann (Iowa State) 3-3, 2-2 1981: 150 lbs - Nate Carr (Iowa State) over Scott Trizzino (Iowa) 10-5 1980: 177 lbs - Ed Banach (Iowa) over Dave Allen (Iowa State) 16-5 1978: 126 lbs - Mike Land (Iowa State) over Randy Lewis (Iowa) 13-5 1976: 150 lbs - Chuck Yagla (Iowa) over Pete Galea (Iowa State) 5-0 1975: 190 lbs - Al Nacin (Iowa State) over Greg Stevens (Iowa) 8-4 1970: 167 lbs - Jason Smith (Iowa State) over Phil Henning (Iowa) 8-7 1957: 147 lbs - Simon Roberts (Iowa) over Ron Gray (Iowa State) 2-2, 2-0 1947: 175 lbs: Joe Scarpello (Iowa) over Glen Brand (Iowa State) 10-6 Iowa leads in NCAA finals wins 12-6 Since Kevin Dresser has been at Iowa State (2017-18), the Cyclones and Hawkeyes have only met five times at the NCAA Tournament. Iowa State has the advantage in those matches 3-2. Iowa State’s wins are: 2023 184 lb Round of 16: Marcus Coleman over Abe Assad (2-1TB) 2022 157 lb Consolation Round of 16: David Carr over Kaleb Young (5-3) 2019 149 lb Seventh Place Bout: Jarrett Degen over Pat Lugo (11-9) Iowa’s wins are: 2024 141 lb Consolation Semifinal: Real Woods over Anthony Echemendia (4-0) 2019 133 lb Bloodround: Austin DeSanto over Austin Gomez (16-5)

Several BIG point getting opportunities await in Week 4 with five tournaments with many high ranked teams and wrestlers participating. Along with the five tournaments, there are plenty of duals and tri-meets to take advantage of as well. Now is the time to start making business decisions and, especially if not in a carry-over league, start looking to chase points and rise up in the standings. While lots of tournament entry information is already out there, we are still looking for some other confirmation on entries to the Roadrunner Open, Big Red Invite, and Keystone Classic. Keep notifications on to @FantasyD1Wrestl or head over to the InterMat Forums for updates. A reminder of some important rules: Wrestlers entered at a weight must compete at that weight or else their results will not be counted. Wrestlers in the “Floater” spots can compete at ANY weight and accumulate Fantasy points. A wrestler will LOCK on your roster at 12pm ET on the day of their first competition for the week. (refer to the SHP’s Week Preview) Only results against D1 competition (starters, backups, and redshirts) will count towards Fantasy Points. Check your league settings to know how many add/drops are permitted per week. Have a question, concern, suggestions, or just want to chat about Fantasy Wrestling? Hit us up on Twitter or head over to the InterMat Forums where we have a Fantasy Wrestling dedicated Forum page! Year-in and Year-out one of the must-see duals of the season, in the college wrestling world, is the Cy-Hawk Dual between Iowa and Iowa State. This year is no different. #9 Iowa State will make the trek to #2 Iowa in search of Kevin Dresser’s first win against his alma mater. In the 2023 version of this dual, it seemed like all signs pointed to Iowa State snapping their long losing streak against their hated in-state rivals. That wasn’t the case as Iowa ran the table from 174-197 and locked up the dual heading into the heavyweight contest. Despite the dual loss, the Cyclones ended up finishing a spot ahead of the Hawkeyes at the 2024 NCAA Championships (in fourth place). It was the first time since 2007 that Iowa State finished above Iowa at the NCAA Tournament. To counter, Tom Brands has never lost to the Cyclones (18-0) as Iowa’s head coach in dual competition. Though there are plenty of returning faces on both sides of this dual, we won’t see any rematches from the 2023 dual - which could make things interesting. New matchups are always fun. Both squads have been bolstered by the transfer portal in the offseason. Iowa State could have three transfers starting, while Iowa is expected to start three themselves. This dual is expected to feature a pair of bouts between returning All-Americans and potentially four between opponents currently ranked in the top ten of their respective weight classes. You can watch this dual at 7pm (Eastern) on B1G+ Without any further ado, here’s what to look forward to in Iowa/Iowa State. 125 lbs - Kysen Terukina/Adrian Meza/Osmany Diversent (Iowa State) vs. #27 Kale Petersen (Iowa) There are a bunch of options at Kevin Dresser’s disposal at 125 lbs. Earlier this season, we were under the impression that senior Kysen Terukina would move up to 133 lbs, Terukina did win a semifinal wrestle-off at 133 lbs, but was injured and unable to wrestle in the finals. He’s now expected to be back down to 133 lbs. Terukina is a three-time NCAA qualifier and was ranked #16 at this weight in the preseason. Other options for the Cyclones include Adrian Meza and Osmany Diversent. Meza has gotten the call in each of Iowa State’s first two duals and claimed a title at the Grand View Open last weekend. Osmany Diversent was third at the Grand View Open with his only loss coming to Iowa’s Joey Cruz, by a point. Iowa will likely counter with redshirt freshman Kale Petersen. A three-time Iowa state champion, Petersen redshirt in 2023-24 and put together a 7-4 record at 133 lbs. He’s made the tough cut down to 125 lbs and could be Iowa’s next great wrestler at the weight. In his two appearances this season, Petersen has received a forfeit and posted a tech fall win over an unranked opponent, so there’s little relevant information available to really break down this match. If you’re looking for a path to victory for the Cyclones, it likely involves a win in this match. 133 lbs - #5 Evan Frost (Iowa State) vs. #9 Drake Ayala (Iowa) One of the marquee matches of the evening takes place at 133 lbs with a pair of All-Americans meeting for the first time. Drake Ayala is a returning NCAA finalist at 125 lbs and has moved up for the 2024-25 season. Ayala got his first taste of the Cy-Hawk dual experience last year when he posted a crucial 7-2 victory over Terukina. So far, Ayala has gone 2-1 at his new weight. He had bonus point wins at Oregon State and Bellarmine, but suffered a loss in a scramble-fest to Stanford’s Tyler Knox. Evan Frost stepped into the Cyclone lineup last season to relatively modest expectations, but quickly established himself as an excellent starter and a podium threat. One of Frost’s early breakout moments came in this dual with an 8-1 win over Brody Teske. Less than a week later, Frost went out to Vegas and made the finals of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. He would later make the Big 12 finals and finished sixth at his first NCAA Tournament. One of Frost’s Vegas wins was a 2-1 victory over Knox. I’m sure we can take much from that common opponent, but it should be a tight match and one of the best of the night. 141 lbs - Zach Redding (Iowa State) vs. #31 Ryder Block (Iowa) Even though we’re in the fourth week of the wrestling season, there have been plenty of twists and turns associated with Iowa State and the 141 lb weight class. Last year, Anthony Echemendia earned All-American honors at 141, but was poised to move up to 149. At one point, it appeared Jacob Frost had the inside track to starting at the weight. Then the word out of Ames was that All-American Casey Swiderski was planning on moving down from 149 - rather than redshirting. Unfortunately, Swiderski suffered a season-ending injury last week. Now, veteran Zach Redding could be the guy. Redding has qualified for nationals twice and even advanced to the NCAA bloodround in 2023. Should he compete on Saturday, Redding will be in search of his first win of the 2024-25 campaign. He’s appeared in two duals and has suffered losses to EIWA champion Josh Koderhandt (Navy) and freshman star Aden Valencia (Stanford). At the conclusion of the 2023-24 season, there seemed to be some uncertainty surrounding Iowa at 141 lbs, as well. The Hawkeyes lost All-American Real Woods to graduation and didn’t have a sure-fire replacement in the works. That led redshirt freshman Ryder Block to cut down to 141 for the year. Block also suffered a loss to Valencia (11-6), but has two dual wins to go alongside it. Before heading to Iowa City, Block had the kind of pre-college pedigree (two Junior National titles in freestyle) that led you to believe he could be a superstar. This will be another critical weight for the Cyclones as most of the middleweight bouts will show Iowa with a distinctive rankings advantage. This is more of a toss-up. 149 lbs - #7 Anthony Echemendia (Iowa State) vs. #4 Kyle Parco (Iowa) This will be the second match of the night between returning All-Americans. Like the first one, it features one wrestler who is moving up in weight (Echemendia), so there isn’t any history between the two. Echemendia was a starter for the first time in 2023-24 and rolled to a 23-5 record and a fifth-place finish at his first NCAA tournament. Even up a weight, Echemendia has continued to look dominant with a tech fall win against Navy and an 11-5 win over 2021 All-American Jaden Abas (Stanford). Speaking of Abas, he and Kyle Parco have plenty of history. In their latest installment, Parco used his mat wrestling to blow out Abas 15-0. Echemendia will represent the first significant test for the four-time All-American since his transfer to Iowa. Even though this is Parco’s first Cy-Hawk dual, he has plenty of history against Iowa State wrestlers. He is currently 5-0 all-time against the Cyclones - though there were a few close calls, like an overtime loss to Paniro Johnson. This has the feel of the kind of match we may end up seeing in the NCAA semifinals or perhaps even a final. I’d still label it a toss-up, even though Parco has been mighty impressive in the black and gold. 157 lbs - #10 Paniro Johnson (Iowa State) vs. #1 Jacori Teemer (Iowa) Now we get into a run of weights where Iowa is a distinct favorite. Iowa State’s path to victory probably revolves around getting an upset or two at these next five weights. Dresser’s team does have the right guy for the job as Paniro Johnson is no stranger to upsets and the spotlight. In his first weekend as a starter, back in 2022-23, Johnson upset returning All-American Austin Gomez. That same year, he pushed Yianni Diakomihalis to extra time and captured a Big 12 championship. Johnson was able to compete in three events unattached last season, while being tied up in the gambling probe, and made his season debut last week - going 3-0 at the Grand View Open. The competition will get even stiffer this week as Johnson faces the top-ranked wrestler in the land - 2024 NCAA runner-up Jacori Teemer. Teemer earned All-American honors three times for Arizona State before transferring to Iowa in the offseason. Throughout his career, Teemer has been methodical in the way he attacks his opponents. Since moving to Iowa, he has seemed more aggressive on his feet (though we have a very limited sample size). Teemer was very impressive during his Carver-Hawkeye debut, when he dismantled stud freshman Grigor Cholakyan (Stanford), 13-3. Should Johnson be able to slow Teemer down and make this a one-move or one-score match, it could bode well for his upset hopes. 165 lbs - #9 MJ Gaitan/Connor Euton (Iowa State) vs. #2 Michael Caliendo (Iowa) This is another weight class where Iowa State will have multiple options available. Unfortunately, none of them may be as enticing as having the second-ranked wrestler at the weight class - a luxury Iowa will enjoy at 165 lbs. Michael Caliendo was everything Hawkeye fans expected and more last season after coming over from North Dakota State. Caliendo was third in the Big Ten and fourth in the nation while racking up bonus points in half of his bouts. In his second season with the Hawkeyes, Caliendo only appears to be getting better. His offensive output has been staggering. The 17 points he recorded in a comeback win over All-American Hunter Garvin represent his lowest-scoring total of the year. In the matches where he was clearly the superior wrestler, Caliendo took care of business with second-period techs. Connor Euton has gotten the call from Dresser in each of Iowa State’s first two dual meets. He has split in those two matches, losing to Garvin and posting a pin over Navy’s Charlie Evans. Euton is a sophomore who is coming off a 21-3 2023-24 season, though he only appeared in one dual meet. The other option for Dresser is turning to sophomore MJ Gaitan. Gaitan was an NCAA Round of 12 finisher in 2024 and became one of the more exciting wrestlers to watch in the country. In last year’s dual meet, he dropped a 14-13 decision to Patrick Kennedy. Gaitan competed at 174 lbs last season, but has made the cut down to 165. Last weekend, he made his debut at the lower weight with a perfect 6-0 record that included falls in half of the matches. His most significant win was a 19-5 major decision over Northern Iowa’s Jack Thomsen. A Gaitan/Caliendo match could end up providing the most action of the evening. At the same time, this could play into Caliendo’s hands and bonus points may be a possibility. 174 lbs - Aiden Riggins/Tate Naaktgeboren (Iowa State) vs. #10 Nelson Brands (Iowa) You’d expect a Brands to have success against Iowa State and Nelson has been perfect during his career in Cy-Hawk duals. He is 3-0 with wins against three different opponents and is looking to make it a perfect 4-0 against either Aiden Riggins or Tate Naaktegboren. After missing the entire 2023-24 season, Brands is back for his final year in the black and gold and is currently 2-1. He knocked the rust off a bit in a season-opening 2-1 win over #33 Sean Harman (Oregon State), before suffering a loss to Stanford freshman Lorenzo Norman. Brands got back on track last Friday with a tech fall win over Bellarmine’s Grant O’Dell. With some more mat time under his belt, will Brands be able to open up his offense a bit over someone he’s favored against from Iowa State? Riggins has been the guy in the Cyclones first two duals; however, he’s had some tough competition losing to Norman and Navy’s Danny Wask - both are currently ranked in the top 25 nationally. He got back on the winning track over the weekend by grabbing a title at the Grand View Open. One of his five wins came over his teammate Naaktgeboren. Like a handful of others in this Iowa State, Naaktgeboren is down a weight from last season. While redshirting, Naaktgeboren posted a 10-4 record. This year, the only blemish on his record is the loss to Riggins. He also won the Luther Open the previous week. The head-to-head win should let Riggins continue to get the dual starts; plus, Riggins is a former Hawkeye, so there might be some familiarity that could help him keep things close with Brands. 184 lbs - #15 Evan Bockman (Iowa State) vs. #7 Gabe Arnold (Iowa) One of the highlights of the 2023 Cy-Hawk dual was when Brands unleashed true freshman Gabe Arnold up at 184 lbs. Arnold was a 174 lber, but filled a void in that dual and he ended up knocking off returning All-American Will Feldkamp, 3-2. This year, Arnold won’t surprise anyone. Though he was expected to challenge at 174 lbs, Arnold has been very good at this weight with bonus points in two of three contests. The veteran, Evan Bockman, represents the highest-ranked wrestler that Arnold’s had to deal with in 2024-25. Bockman was a three-time national qualifier at 197 lbs for Utah Valley, but has moved down to 184 lbs in his final year of eligibility. He’s been very solid for the Cyclones in his two dual appearances, one a major decision and the other a five-point dual victory. This will be an excellent test for Arnold, not just because Bockman is the highest-ranked opponent he’s faced this year, but also because he’s someone who has had success at 197 lbs. Arnold is someone who aimed to compete at 174 lbs, so will there be a size/strength discrepancy? 197 lbs - #20 Christian Carroll (Iowa State) vs. #2 Stephen Buchanan (Iowa) We’ll close out with a pair of matches in the upperweights with mega-prospect redshirt freshmen taking on established national title threats. Had things worked out differently, this could have been a Bedlam match this year. Christian Carroll transferred in from Oklahoma State and Stephen Buchanan from Oklahoma. In limited action, Carroll has proven to be a potential All-American threat with his 11-7 win over Nick Stemmett in his Iowa State debut. He followed with a 14-5 major decision over Navy’s Payton Thomas in his second dual. Carroll has had extensive freestyle experience and even qualified for the Olympic Trials last spring. The big question mark surrounding Carroll has been his weight class. He’s very muscle-bound, but short for a traditional heavyweight. Even him making 197 lbs, seemed like a difficult pull. It’ll be something to monitor in this difficult matchup and as the season progresses. Buchanan is the highest returning placewinner at 197 lbs from the 2024 NCAA Tournament. He was third in a deep weight class which marked the third time that he’s been on the NCAA podium. He’s twice finished third. In his Hawkeye debut, Buchanan survived an early onslaught from All-American Trey Munoz - only to come back a dominate late for a 9-5 victory. He also faced Stemmet and crushed him with a 17-1 tech fall. 285 lbs - #4 Yonger Bastida (Iowa State) vs. #13 Ben Kueter (Iowa) Finally, we’ll end with a huge bout at 285 lbs! Hopefully. Yonger Bastida has not competed yet during the 2024-25 season and had to pull out of the NWCA All-Star Classic due to an injury. You’d have to assume that Bastida and the Iowa State staff had this dual circled as a possible return date if Bastida is close to 100%. In his first year at 285 lbs, Bastida won titles at the CKLV and Big 12 Championships and came into the NCAA Tournament unbeaten. In Kansas City, Bastida suffered his only two losses of the season and missed out on the podium. At the time, some were picking Bastida in a possible NCAA final over eventual champion Greg Kerkvliet. Will he be able to return to that form on Saturday night? Iowa counters with two-sport star Ben Kueter. Kueter made a few dual appearances while redshirting last season. Over the summer, Kueter announced that he would not play football this year in an attempt to maximize his wrestling potential at the U20 World Championships and during the NCAA season. Kueter ended up with his second U20 finals appearance and is unbeaten in three collegiate matches in 2024-25. After a few struggles in his season debut, Kueter responded with a tech fall and a : 32-second fall his last time out. In the two duals where Bastida was not able to compete, Iowa State sent out true freshman Daniel Herrera. In both appearances, Herrera was able to roll to tech fall victories.

Week 3 concludes with many wrestlers jumping and dropping in the standings. For these standings, we will be using the Basic Fantasy Scoring through @WrestleStat (Win by Dec +3, Loss by Dec -3, Win by Pin +6, Loss by Pin -6, etc). Only results against D1 competition (starters, backups, and redshirts) will count towards Fantasy Points. Standings are first ordered based on total Fpts, then if tied by Points Per Match (PPM). Week 3 Notes: Of the Top-10 for Week 3, only four are starters. Some got the luck of the draw being at the Shorty Hitchcock Memorial for D1 competition while others took advantage of Round Robin play at the Daktronics Open. Landon Sommer took advantage of his three matches, securing three pins for 18 Fpts. In second of the Week 3 standings, Rutgers’ Kurt Wehner technically wrestled six matches, but only three were countable for 16 Fpts. Three starters tied for 5th in Zach Glazier, Issac Trumble, and Vincent Robinson, but all arrived by different results. Glazier had three techs, Trumble had two pins and a decision, and Robinson had one tech, one major, and one win by injury default. But at the end of the day, the scoreboard reads 15 Fpts and 5 PPM for all. Speaking of Vincent Robinson, he continues his terrific start of the season. Before the injury win against Dean Peterson (RUT), he looked to be well on his way for at least a win by major. But with the two extra points from the win by injury, Robinson holds a five point lead over Jim Mullen, and seven point lead over the rest of the Top-5. The Big 12 continued to pick up in action with seven teams in duals and a handful of wrestlers at open tournaments. Oklahoma State made a dominant debut with wins over Oregon State and Utah Valley with a combined 75-12 team score. Northern Colorado made an early trip to Philadelphia and returned home with two dual wins. South Dakota State had a strong showing at Daktronics, while Arizona State saw a worrying injury to Richie Figueroa. Let’s take a look at some of the more notable results to come out of this weekend. Notable Results: 11/14: #20 West Virginia over Rider (31-9) | Full Results 133: #20 Jett Strickenberger Fall Michael Camparano (4:31) 174: Michael Wilson Dec. #24 Brody Conley (11-5) 184: Isaac Dean Dec. #21 Ian Bush (4-2) Strickenberger continues to look good at 133, getting his second bonus point win at the weight this year. Brody Conley is a young wrestler who I was high on after a solid year last season, but suffered an upset in his debut here. Wilson was a qualifier as well last season, so not a bad loss but a tough debut for Conley. Ian Bush has lost his last two dual matches after a hot start, to a currently unranked D2 wrestler in Kyle Homet and now Isaac Dean. Bush missed out on the starting spot against Dennis Robin last season and could be a lineup battle to look out for. 11/15: Northern Colorado over Drexel (29-16) | Full Results 11/16: Northern Colorado over Penn (22-13) | Full Results 125: #8 Stevo Poulin Dec. #17 Max Gallagher (7-2) 141: #1 Andrew Alirez Dec. #15 CJ Composto (8-2) 157: #16 Vinny Zerban Dec. #19 Jude Swisher (7-2) Northern Colorado had a strong weekend on the road with a 2-0 performance and a handful of ranked wins. Stevo Poulin, Dom Serrano, Andrew Alirez, Vinny Zerban, and Clayton Ulrey all went 2-0. An interesting note was at 149, where both Adam Busiello and Benji Alanis both competed but had one-sided losses. The Bears continue to show themselves to be a sneaky tough dual team with their ranked wrestlers. 11/15: #4 Oklahoma State over Utah Valley (38-6) | Full Results 125: #6 Troy Sprately Dec. Bridger Ricks (5-3) 165: #6 Terrell Barraclough Dec. #5 Cam Amine (TB-1 5-4) Two new head coaches squared off in Orem, UT in front of a record-setting crowd of over 5,000 fans. The Cowboys were dominant, winning eight matches with six techs or falls. Bridger Ricks is a newcomer after two All-American finishes at Western Wyoming and gave Spratley all he could handle. With another close overtime loss to Nebraska’s Caleb Smith, Ricks could be a deep sleeper at 125. Barraclough and Amine battled back and forth in a match with huge conference and national implications. Amine took a 3-1 lead with the only takedown in the third but Barraclough escaped just in time and took it OT with a riding time point. In rideouts, Barraclough took a smart locked hands call to finish with more riding time and get the win on criteria. Haiden Drury got a win for the Wolverines as well with a decision over local Idaho native Kolter Burton making his Cowboy dual debut. 11/17: #4 Oklahoma State over #25 Oregon State (37-6) | Full Results 125: #6 Troy Spratley Dec. #24 Maximo Renteria (SV-1 7-4) 157: #30 Ethan Stiles Dec. #8 Teague Travis (SV-1 7-4) 197: #19 Luke Surber Dec. #7 Trey Munoz (5-0) The Cowboys had a solid weekend headed west, going 2-0 in duals. They had some lineup changes for this one, with Cael Hughes at 133 and Tagen Jamison at 141. Jamison is certainly the starter at 141, but it seems like there could be a real starting battle between Witcraft and Hughes at 133. Spratley survived another close match, with a clutch takedown over Renteria to go 2-0. Teague Travis and Ethan Stiles had some wild scrambles, and it seemed like Travis had the momentum in overtime. However, Stiles scrambled through and came up with the takedown for the upset. Luke Surber was one of the biggest winners on the weekend, with a massive rankings upset over Munoz. Surber has a lengthy hit list and Munoz isn’t the first All-American he’s beaten, but it’s a great performance after an injury-filled 2024 season. 11/15: Virginia Tech over Missouri (23-10) | Full Results 125: #13 Eddie Ventresca Dec. Gage Walker (6-5) 141: #18 Sam Latona Dec. #13 Josh Edmond (4-2) 174: #1 Keegan O’Toole Maj. #4 Lennox Wolak (13-5) 184: #12 Colton Hawks Dec. #5 TJ Stewart (8-2) 197: #13 Andy Smith Dec. Aeoden Sinclair (12-9) Still missing Noah Surtin and Rocky Elam, the Tigers struggled to score team points in this dual on the road. True freshmen Gage Walker and Aeoden Sinclair came close against ranked opponents but weren’t able to finish late. Josh Edmond suffered an upset loss to an always dangerous Latona. Wolak kept it scoreless after one but O’Toole poured it on the last two periods and got a buzzer-beater escape point to keep his 100% bonus rate. Colton Hawks has gone round of 16 to bloodround finishes the past two seasons and made a statement that he’s a podium threat with a dominant decision win over TJ Stewart. Two takedowns and plenty of riding time gave him a statement win early in the year. 11/15: #9 Iowa State over Navy (29-9) | Full Results 141: #9 Joshua Koderhandt Dec. Zach Redding (3-2) With the recent news of Casey Swiderski missing this season due to injury, the Cyclones could have a battle at 141 this season. Redding has started in both duals so far and had tough losses. The main challenger could be with Jacob Frost, twin brother of All-American at 133 Evan Frost. Redding is more credentialed but don’t be surprised if the Frost brothers are a 1-2 punch at times this season. 11/15: #17 South Dakota State over Augustana (49-0) | Full Results Not too much to take from this one as the Jackrabbits dominated with a mix of starters. They had nine bonus point wins including an impressive six tech falls. 11/16: Grand View Open (#9 Northern Iowa, #13 Iowa State) | Brackets #9 Northern Iowa 125: #4 Gabe Gonzales (Grand View) Dec. #28 Trever Anderson (TB-1 3-2) 125: Jakason Burks (Central Missouri) Dec. #28 Trever Anderson (6-5) 174: #10 Braden Anderson (Grand View) Dec. #14 Jared Simma (10-6) While Parker Keckeisen was competing at the All-Star Classic, many of the other Panther wrestlers were making their debut here. They came away with titles at 133, (Cory Land), 141 (Cael Happel), 157 (Ryder Downey), 197 (Wyatt Voelker), and 285 (Lance Runyon). There were some unexpected results with ranked wrestlers in NAIA taking out starters Anderson and Simma. It may not change much long term, but some notable results early in the season. Look out for Lance Runyon at heavyweight, the two-time qualifier at 174lbs has made the move to heavyweight after struggling with injuries. Heavyweight was the only real question mark for the Panthers so if Runyon can get into the rankings he gives them a well-rounded lineup. #13 Iowa State 125: Adrian Meza Dec. #4 Gabe Gonzales (Grand View) (7-6) 141: #6 Cael Happel (UNI) Maj. Jacob Frost (18-6) 157: Alex Ramirez (Grand View) over #11 Paniro Johnson (Medical Forfeit) 165: #9 MJ Gaitan Maj. #27 Jack Thomsen (UNI) (19-5) 174: Aiden Riggens Dec. Tate Naaktgeboren (SV-1 4-1) The Cyclones had some intriguing results here at multiple weights. Adrian Meza is a true freshman and undefeated through six matches. At this tournament, he beat Gabe Gonzales of Grand View, who beat Iowa’s Joey Cruz and UNI’s Trever Anderson. Jacob Frost and Zach Redding look to be in a battle for the 141 spot, and Frost had a solid tournament here. He had to finish 4th due to matches in a single day rule, but only lost to top-eight ranked Cael Happel. MJ Gaitan made his 165 debut in impressive fashion with bonus in five of six matches with a near tech in the finals against a ranked opponent. In what seems to essentially be a wrestle-off in the finals, Aiden Riggens squeaked out a tight overtime win over redshirt freshman Tate Naaktgeboren. Riggens has started in both duals but a narrow win here likely doesn’t shut the door on this competition. 11/17: Daktronics Open (#8 South Dakota State, #15 Arizona State, #30 Oklahoma, North Dakota State, Air Force) | Brackets #8 South Dakota State 125: Brady Roark Dec. #30 Antonio Lorenzo (OU) (1-0) 157: Charlie Millard (MINN) Maj. #14 Cobe Siebrecht (13-4) 165: #31 Drake Rhodes Maj. #28 Tate Picklo (OU) (16-3) 197: Thomas Dineen Maj. #24 Bradley Hill (OU) (14-4) South Dakota State had one of the more impressive tournaments with a number of upsets. Brady Roark and Thomas Dineen are two redshirt freshmen who scored ranked wins and showed a potential preview of what to expect in the future. Cobe Siebrecht had a surprising loss, being majored by true freshman Millard. Drake Rhodes had a solid ranked win, with bonus points sticking out. The Jackrabbits also had undefeated starters in Derrick Cardinal, Bennett Berge, and Zach Glazier. #15 Arizona State 125: Brady Roark Inj. Def. #1 Richie Figueroa (2:19) While the Sun Devils had solid showings from Jesse Vasquez and Nicco Ruiz, the biggest story comes from the returning champ. In a match with Brady Roark, he gave up the first takedown and suffered a leg injury. He tried to wrestle through it but after another takedown how to injury default. Figueroa walked off the mat on his power, but this will be an injury to monitor. #30 Oklahoma 125: Kael Lauridsen (NEB) Dec. #30 Antonio Lorenzo (OU) (5-3) 285: #29 Juan Mora Dec. #25 Luke Rasmussen (SDSU) (10-3) 285: #29 Juan Mora Dec. #23 Bennett Tabor (MINN) (6-1) The Sooners had impressive young undefeated wrestlers in Beric Jordan, KJ Evans, and Landyn Sommer. Current starter Antonio Lorenzo had a tough debut, dropping two matches to some young backups. Juan Mora was a standout, getting two ranked wins early in the year. Willie McDougald had a close loss to Jesse Vasquez, but did beat ranked Gavin Drexler. DJ Parker had a 9-3 loss to Bennett Berge but majored his two other opponents in a solid debut. Bradley Hill had a tough tournament with upset losses to Thomas Dineen and Brian Burburjia. North Dakota State 149: #32 Gavin Drexler Dec. Maxwell Petersen (8-7) Nothing too crazy for NDSU in this one, but Gavin Drexler had his second win over teammate Petersen. The two first competed at the Southeast Open where it was a 15-3 major for Drexel, so Petersen could be closing the gap at a weight the Bison have some depth. Air Force 197: Brian Burburjia Dec. #24 Bradley Hill (OU) (5-0) A name I’ve been looking out for is Burburjia, who was solid at Air Force Prep last season. He went 1-2 here with losses to SDSU’s Zach Glazier and Thomas Dineen, but did avenge a loss to Bradley Hill. After a 4-1 loss in the dual over a week ago, Burburjia looked good in a 5-0 win here. Upcoming Competitions: Air Force: AT California Baptist (Nov. 22), Vanguard (Nov. 23) Arizona State: Embry-Riddle/Arizona Christian (Nov. 22), AT Oklahoma State (Nov. 24) California Baptist: Air Force (Nov. 22) Iowa State: AT Iowa (Nov. 23) Missouri: AT Illinois (Nov. 21), Northern Iowa (Nov. 26) Northern Colorado: Cougar Clash (Dec. 7) North Dakota State: Minnesota (Nov. 22) Northern Iowa: South Dakota State (Nov. 24), Missouri (Nov. 26) Oklahoma: Wyoming (Nov. 23) Oklahoma State: Wyoming (Nov. 22), Arizona State (Nov. 24) South Dakota State: AT Northern Iowa (Nov. 26) Utah Valley: Presbyterian/Duke/NC State (Nov. 23) West Virgina: AT App State (Nov. 22) Wyoming: AT Oklahoma State (Nov. 22), AT Oklahoma (Nov. 23)
