  2. Welcome to a new recurring feature on InterMat celebrating the first 25 years of the 21st century. Every couple of days, we’ll examine a particular collegiate program and highlight its accomplishments over the past quarter century. We’ve already looked at: Lehigh Minnesota Missouri is a unique program, as it really came into its own as a national power during the last quarter century. Coming into 2001, Missouri had never produced an individual national champion. 25 years later, they’ve seen a handful of wrestlers get to the top step of the podium - a couple of them on multiple occasions. As you’ll see below, Missouri's best work has been done by the back half of their lineup. They can go three-deep with four-time All-Americans at one upperweight, which is not the norm for any team at any weight. Trying to assemble Missouri’s first team from this quarter century was generally pretty straightforward. At the same time, there were some four-time All-Americans and high placers that couldn’t get onto the first team. It says something about the state of Missouri wrestling where a second team could have the type of firepower that this one would have. Wrestlers considered for the three teams had to compete from 2001-25. For the wrestlers early in this timeframe, their entire collegiate body of work was considered. Only collegiate results were taken into consideration. Even if a wrestler was successful at multiple weights, they were only selected for one weight - typically it was based on the strongest possible first team. After the three All-Century teams, there are some fun facts about Missouri’s results over the past 25 years. Missouri First Team 125 lbs - Alan Waters: Kansas City, Missouri: 2x AA (3,4), 3x conference champ (2x MAC, 1x Big 12), 2x NCAA #1 seed 133 lbs - Tyler McCormick: Leawood, Kansas: 2x AA (6,7), 3x Big 12 Runner-Up 141 lbs - Jaydin Eierman: Columbia, Missouri: 4x AA (2,3,4,5), 4x conference champ (3x MAC, 1x Big Ten) 149 lbs - Drake Houdashelt: O’Fallon, Missouri: 3x AA (1,5,6), 2015 NCAA champion, 4x conference champ (3x MAC, 1x Big 12) 157 lbs - Joey Lavallee: Reno, Nevada: 1x AA (2), 2x NCAA Round of 12 finisher, 2x MAC champion 165 lbs - Keegan O’Toole: Hartland, Wisconsin: 5x AA (2,3,1,1,3), 2x NCAA champion, 4x conference champ (3x Big 12, 1x MAC) 174 lbs - Ben Askren: Hartland, Wisconsin: 4x AA (1,1,2,2), 2x NCAA champion, 3x Big 12 champion, 2x Hodge winner 184 lbs - Max Askren: Hartland, Wisconsin: 3x AA (1,5,7), 2010 NCAA champion, 2x Big 12 champion 197 lbs - J’den Cox: Columbia, Missouri: 4x AA (1,1,5,1), 3x NCAA champion, 4x MAC champion 285 lbs - Mark Ellis: Peculiar, Missouri: 2x AA (6,1), 2009 NCAA champion, Big 12 runner-up Second Team 125 lbs - Barlow McGhee: Rock Island, Illinois: 4x NCAA qualifier, NCAA Round of 12 finisher, MAC champion 133 lbs - John Erneste: Kansas City, Missouri: 1x AA (6), NCAA Round of 12 finisher, 3x MAC champion 141 lbs - Lavion Mayes: Mascoutah, Illinois: 3x AA (2,3,7), MAC Champion, 3x NCAA #3 seed 149 lbs - Brock Mauller: Columbia, Missouri: 3x AA (7,5,6), NWCA 1st Team AA, 3x MAC champion 157 lbs - Michael Chandler: High Ridge, Missouri: 1x AA (5), 2x Big 12 runner-up, 2x NCAA Round of 12 finisher 165 lbs - Nick Marable: Collierville, Tennessee: 2x AA (7,3), 3x Big 12 champion, 2x NCAA #3 seed 174 lbs - Daniel Lewis: Blue Springs, Missouri: 4x AA (4,4,6,4), 4x MAC champion, NCAA #2 seed 184 lbs - Raymond Jordan: New Bern, North Carolina: 2x AA (3,5), Big 12 champion, NCAA Round of 12 finisher 197 lbs - Rocky Elam: Kansas City, Missouri: 4x AA (6,3,4,5), 2x conference champion (1x Big 12, 1x MAC), NCAA #3 seed 285 lbs - Dom Bradley: Blue Springs, Missouri: 2x AA (4,3), 2x conference champion (1x Big 12, 1x MAC), NCAA #1 seed Third Team 125 lbs - Noah Surtin: Edwardsville, Illinois: 4x NCAA qualifier, NCAA Round of 12 finisher, 2x conference runner-Up (1x MAC, 1x Big 12) 133 lbs - Nathan McCormick: Leawood, Kansas: 1x AA (6), MAC champion, Big 12 runner-up 141 lbs - Jeremy Spates: Norman, Oklahoma: 1x AA (5) 149 lbs - Grant Leeth: Kearney, Missouri: 1x AA (6), MAC champion, NCAA #3 seed 157 lbs - Kenny Burleson: Neosho, Missouri: 1x AA (7), Big 12 champion, 2x Big 12 finalist 165 lbs - Matt Pell: Luxemburg, Wisconsin: 2x AA (3,7), 2x Big 12 runner-up, 2x NCAA Round of 12 finisher 174 lbs - Peyton Mocco: West Allis, Wisconsin: 1x AA (8), 3x Conference runner-up (2x Big 12, 1x MAC) 184 lbs - Mike Larson: McKinleyville, California: 1x AA (8), Big 12 champion, NCAA Round of 12 finisher 197 lbs - Willie Miklus: Altoona, Iowa: 4x AA (6,8,6,7), MAC champion, Big 12 runner-up 285 lbs - Zach Elam: Kansas City, Missouri: 2x AA (4,6), 2x NCAA Round of 12 finisher Fun Facts In 2006, Ben Askren became the first Missouri wrestler to win a national championship Now they have six wrestlers who have combined to win 10 national titles After coming into the 2000’s without a national champion, Missouri now has 3 multi-time champs (B. Askren, Cox, O’Toole) In 2007, Ben Askren became just the second wrestler to win the Dan Hodge Trophy twice. He remains the only Missouri wrestler with one. Since 2002, Missouri has finished in the top 20 at NCAA’s in all but one season (2012) In 2007, Missouri captured the first NCAA team trophy (3rd) in school history - they got a second in 2015 (4th) Despite not winning a team trophy, the 2017 team’s 86.5 points are the highest in program history (they finished fifth) Missouri has only known one head coach during this entire quarter century (Brian Smith) The Tigers had a streak where they won 12 straight conference championships. One in the Big 12 to start the run. Nine straight in the MAC. Two more after rejoining the Big 12 Ben Askren was also Missouri’s first four-time All-American in 2007. Since then, six others have joined him (counting transfers Miklus/Eierman). Brock Mauller was also a three-time AA and named an NWCA AA in 2020. Three of those four-time AA’s have wrestled at 197 lbs (Cox, R. Elam, Miklus) 70 wrestlers have earned NCAA All-American honors during this quarter century. Plus Mauller’s one honor from the NWCA Of the 70 All-Americans, 37 have been earned by a Missouri native Five times this quarter century Missouri has placed five wrestlers on the NCAA podium in the same season (2009, 2013, 2015, 2013, 2023). 16 Missouri wrestlers have wrestled in the national finals since 2001 12 Missouri wrestlers have earned the #1 seed at NCAA’s - with all of them coming in 2006 or later Missouri has produced 63 conference champions over this quarter century The top four wins leaders in Mizzou’s all-time list wrestled in this time period (B. Askren, Cox, Waters, Houdashelt).
  3. Within the last week or so, we’ve had a handful of new developments regarding RAF (Real American Freestyle). Just this morning, news broke that the FoxNation app will be the home of RAF and will stream their first event, RAF 01, live on August 30th. FoxNation is available for a $7.99 per month option or $60 per year. RAF also has announced the 1996 Olympic gold medalist Kurt Angle will be a part of their commentary team. He’ll join collegiate All-American and MMA star Chael Sonnen and 2010 NCAA champion Bubba Jenkins in the booth. Last week, RAF also publicly added another bout to their RAF 01 card. 2015 NCAA champion Nathan Tomasello will take on 2023 NCAA runner-up Matt Ramos at 135 lbs. Tomasello was a four-time All-American and a four-time Big Ten champion for Ohio State University. He was an integral part of the Buckeyes 2015 national title-winning squad. Ramos made the 2023 NCAA finals after pulling one of the most memorable upsets in recent history. He nearly blew the roof off of Tulsa’s BOK Center after pinning three-time national champion Spencer Lee. Ramos finished his collegiate career earlier this year with a fourth-place finish at the 125 lbs weight class. With the Ramos/Tomasello bout added to RAF 01, the card now looks like this: Matt Ramos vs. Nathan Tomasello (135 lbs) Real Woods vs. Darrion Caldwell (145 lbs) Austin Gomez vs. Lance Palmer (155 lbs) Sarah Hildebrandt vs. Zeltzin Hernandez Guerra (120 lbs) Kennedy Blades vs. Alejandra Rivera Arriaga (150 lbs) Bo Nickal vs. Jacob Cardenas (205 lbs) Yianni Diakomihalis vs. Bajrang Punia (155 lbs)
  4. While a large portion of the wrestling community was focused on Fargo, or perhaps the Hungarian Ranking Series Event, there was some movement on the DI coaching carousel. Illinois announced that they have hired former Nebraska All-American Eric Schultz. Schultz will take the place of two-time NCAA champion Isaiah Martinez on the Illini staff. Since taking seventh at the 2022 NCAA Championships, Schultz has remained active on the freestyle scene and was fourth at the 2024 Olympic Team Trials. While at Nebraska, Schultz was a three-time Big Ten finalist and was seeded in the top-three at NCAA’s on three occasions (one being the canceled 2020 tournament). Before college, Schultz was a state champion for Tinley Park High School in Illinois. Another recent addition to the coaching ranks (again) is Gavin Hoffman to Lock Haven. Last year around this time, we wrote about Hoffman joining the Bald Eagle coaching staff. About half way through his first season, Hoffman decided to use his final year of eligibility and wrestled at heavyweight for LHU. He ended up winning a MAC title and finished a match away from All-American status. The last new hire to mention is Jay Nivison who was hired by Long Island. Nivison just wrapped up his collegiate career at Michigan State University. Before coming to Michigan State, Nivison was a teammate of Sharks head coach John Arceri at Buffalo. In 2022, Nivison qualified for the NCAA Tournament after taking true second at the MAC Championships. On a different note, late Thursday night, Oregon State announced that assistant coach Nate Engel had stepped down from his position on the Beaver coaching staff. Engel has been a key figure in helping Oregon State to sign ranked recruiting classes in three of the last four years. He also has plenty of experience coaching the international styles with the Beaver Dam RTC and USA Wrestling. We’ll be paying close attention to Engel’s next move. With Engel stepping down, there’s an attractive opportunity with Oregon State that has been added to our list of openings below. 7. On Wednesday evening, we saw a whole new crop of competitors who etched their names into high school wrestling history by winning stop sign, signifying a Junior National freestyle championship. A Junior freestyle title is one of the most coveted championships in high school wrestling and it generally precludes success at the collegiate and international levels. 8. The men’s freestyle portion of the 2025 16U and Junior National Championships from Fargo, North Dakota is in the books. You can check out Jason Bryant’s Fargo Guide to track the long history of success in the FargoDome and how it correlates to winning at the collegiate and Senior levels. So that means you shouldn’t be surprised to see the wrestlers who found the podium yesterday to be the same ones challenging for the top eight at the NCAA Championships. And with the way that high school wrestlers have trained and are getting better than in past generations - we won’t wait very long for them to contend. Below are the wrestlers who earned All-American honors and have committed to wrestle at the next level. They are listed by their future home, along with their placement and weight. 9. It didn’t take long, but the first major domino fell from recruiting in the Class of 2027. #8 overall, Salah Tsarni (Bullis School, MD) has committed to wrestle for the Air Force Academy. Tsarni came into this week ranked second in the nation at 175 lbs. Yesterday, we saw Tsarni advance to the finals of the 16U freestyle at 175 lbs in Fargo. In the championship match, Tsarni fell by a point to Pennsylvania’s Jayden O’Farrill by a point. Last year, Tsarni was third in 16U freestyle and fifth in Greco-Roman. Since the high school season ended, Tsarni has captured a title at NHSCA Sophomores and was a runner-up at the UWW U17 Trials in freestyle. Tsarni is a two-time National Prep All-American for Maryland’s Bullis School. As a sophomore, Tsarni was a runner-up at 165 pounds and placed seventh in 2023. Tsarni is a massive get for Sam Barber’s team. Should he maintain his ranking, he would be the highest ranked wrestler to enroll at the Air Force Academy since recruiting rankings have been commonplace (mid-2000’s). This might spark some movement on the recruiting front for the Class of 2027, as we have only been notified of one other recruit from the rising junior class. Air Force is a program that has been noted in the national recruiting rankings three times within the last five years. With a massive commitment like Tsarni, we could see Barber’s team back in the 2027 rankings. Here are Air Force’s recruits from 2026 and 2027.

  13. Reviving a tradition that goes back more than six decades, the national men’s freestyle teams from the United States and Russia have agreed to compete in a dual meet as part of the Professional Wrestling League. Billed as PWL 9, the dual meet will feature a card of 10 matches in the Senior international wrestling weight classes. The competition will be held at Kozma Istvan Magyar Birkozo Akademia Alapitvany in Budapest, Hungary on Monday, July 21 at 7:00 p.m. local time. “I think this is a great opportunity for us to develop dual meet concepts for our athletes. This could lead to even more excellent opportunities in the future. I was involved in some of the early USA vs. Russia dual meets in the 1980’s. They were beneficial for both nations and for our sport. We are in a different time right now, and we have not done one of these duals for a number of years. These duals not only help promote wrestling, but also provide quality matches for our athletes to help prepare for future competitions,” said Bruce Baumgartner, President of USA Wrestling “As seen at many World Championships and Olympic Games in recent decades, the most anticipated matches are often between Russian and American wrestlers. I would like to emphasize that on the wrestling mat, the Russians and the Americans have always understood each other. In fact, in 2013 we stood side by side to preserve wrestling in the Olympic program and succeeded. I am convinced that regardless of the outcome in Budapest, it will be a major victory for our sport,” said Mikhail Mamiashvili, President of the Russian Wrestling Federation and Olympic champion. The wrestling federations of the United States and Russia (the former Soviet Union) have been competing in men’s freestyle dual meets going back to the late 1950’s. These dual meets have been held in both nations in spite of the political situation between the nations at the time. For many years, Russian teams which attended the Freestyle World Cup held in the United States would also compete in dual meets in a variety of U.S. cities while on their visit. Likewise, when U.S. athletes attended major wrestling tournaments in Russia, they would often compete in dual meets in various Russian cities while on the tour. The teams are meeting in a neutral site in Budapest due to the logistical convenience for both federations. Some of the U.S. athletes in the dual meet also will compete in the Polyak Imre & Varga Janos Memorial UWW Ranking Series Event in Budapest, July 17-18. Based upon the success of PWL 9, there is hope that more dual meets can be organized, including a return to matches in Russia and the United States. The United States team will include 2023 U20 World champion and 2022 U17 World champion Luke Lilledahl (57 kg), who is currently No. 2 on the U.S. Senior National Team. 16. After all of the big high school events InterMat likes to look at the All-Americans and sort out which colleges they will attend. Junior women's freestyle from Fargo is no different. There were plenty of great performances by young women in the Class of 2025 - ones that will likely be collegiate stars sooner than later. There were also some schools that clearly have to feel good about their future after watching what transpired in the FargoDome. Below are the women who made the Fargo Junior podium and have committed or signed to wrestle at the next level. They've been sorted by college and then according to their placement. At this time, we don't have college information for any of the wrestlers in classes of than 2025. Please let me know if there are any that we've missed. 18. Welcome to a new recurring feature on InterMat celebrating the first 25 years of the 21st century. Every couple of days, we’ll examine a particular collegiate program and highlight its accomplishments over the past quarter century. The first team that we examined was Minnesota, now Lehigh is up. Lehigh is a team that has perennially been in the hunt for EIWA championships, individually and as a team. During the early part of this quarter century, they even captured a couple of NCAA team trophies. Looking ahead to next year and the first year of the next quarter century, Lehigh might be in a position to contend for a team trophy again. But we’ll talk about that in due time. As we tried to determine Lehigh’s first team for the quarter century there were a couple of difficult decisions - more so than our feature on Minnesota. We gave Ryan Crookham the nod even though there are two-time All-Americans on the second and third team at 133 lbs. Crookham does have a significantly higher NCAA finish and NCAA seed, plus time to grow his resume. 157 and 174 lbs made us think about the cancellation of the 2020 national tournament. Josh Humphreys and Jordan Kutler were both in a position to have another strong NCAA finish, which would have made the decisions here much easier. Of course, that didn’t happen. Maybe Jordan Kutler and his former coach, Brad Dillon, can wrestle off for the spot. The decision that might be the most eye-catching is the one at 184 lbs. There’s the choice between 2002 NCAA champion Rob Rohn and two-time NCAA finalist Robert Hamlin. Hamlin’s total body of work is better and he’s one of the best wrestlers in this quarter century without an NCAA title (Lehigh actually might have a couple of wrestlers on that list), while Rohn has the all-important title. We’ll let you debate this in the comments and on the message boards. After the three All-Century teams, there are some fun facts about Lehigh’s results over the past 25 years. 19. Thousands of high school wrestlers in Fargo this week will compete for stop signs and national championships. One already has his hardware from Fargo and is aiming even higher. In between rounds of men’s freestyle competition at the 16U and Junior National Championships was the delayed Final X wrestle-off between world champion Vito Arujau and rising high school senior Jax Forrest. Arujau’s status as a returning world medalist allowed him to delay their Final X series from June 14th to July 14th from Fargo, North Dakota. Forrest swept the two matches 4-3 in the first and 7-2 in the second. Back in 2022, Forrest was a U17 World silver medalist and earlier this year he won the Senior Pan-American Championships. With Forrest on the squad, the 2025 Senior World Team will feature seven first-time world team members. Forrest and PJ Duke will wrestle at the World Championships before ever stepping onto a collegiate mat. Match one saw Arujau strike first with a takedown off of a picture-esque sweep single. With under a minute remaining in the opening stanza, Arujau looked poised to add onto his lead; however, Forrest scrambled out of a Arujau attack and into a takedown of his own. Early in the second period, action took the pair over to the edge of the mat. Arujau nearly had a second takedown but settled for a step-out point to lead, 3-2. Despite some quality action, 3-2 is how the score would remain until the final seconds of the bout. With under :30 seconds remaining, fresh off of a reshot, Arujau got in on a low leg attack. Forrest slipped free of the attack and put pressure on Arujau near the edge. Once Arujau shifted his weight to stay in bounds, Forrest spun around and scored the winning takedown with :05 seconds left in the bout. He would hold on to win, 4-3. Forrest set the tone in the second match with an early takedown and immediately transitioned into a turn for a quick 4-0 lead. Arujau was able to get a late takedown but was never able to seriously threaten Forrest.

  22. One of the highest-ranked uncommitted wrestlers from the Class of 2026 has committed. Coby Merrill (JW North, CA) the #7 overall recruit in the Class of 2026 has committed to Iowa State. Merrill is currently ranked second in the nation at 285 lbs. Merrill is a three-time California state finalist and an undefeated state champion in 2025. Prior to his sophomore year of high school, Merrill finished in third place in both styles at the Junior level in Fargo. The year before he was seventh in 16U freestyle and a Greco-Roman national champion. Merrill has also captured titles at California’s prestigious Doc Buchanan Invitational in each of the last two seasons. In 2024 at 220 lbs and 285 lbs in 2025. Earlier this year, Merrill competed at the U20 Open and finished sixth at 125 kgs after falling in the semifinals. Merrill is slated to compete in Fargo this week. Team California’s preliminary roster lists Merrill at 285 lbs for Junior freestyle, but he’s not listed for Greco-Roman. Surprisingly, Merrill is the first recruit from the Class of 2026 to give Kevin Dresser’s team a verbal commitment. Merrill projects as a heavyweight at the next level. That weight isn’t a pressing need for the Cyclones as they have Daniel Herrera currently as the long-term starter. Herrera qualified for nationals as a true heavyweight and is expected to redshirt as Yonger Bastida finishes his career in 2025-26. That would allow Merrill to redshirt his first year on campus before the two may overlap. But those are good problems to have and for another day. Before choosing Iowa State, Merrill took fall visits to Cornell, Princeton, and Stanford. His older brother Cody will be a redshirt freshman at Oklahoma State next year.

  24. June 15th was New Year’s Day for those college coaches recruiting the Class of 2027 and the student-athletes waiting to plan out their futures. The 15th was the first day that collegiate coaches could officially contact rising juniors and there has been plenty of activity on the recruiting front. Since the 15th, some of the nation’s top prospects have released lists of their top schools. Rather than trying to dig through social media or click through a bunch of state sites, we have compiled this list of these top recruits and their potential future homes. Remember recruiting is a fluid process, so another school, currently unlisted, could jump into the picture for a recruit. Conversely, the recruits could trim their list at any time. This is a feature that will be revisited as needed throughout the recruitment process. #1 Melvin Miller (Bishop McCort, PA) - Arizona State, Michigan, Missouri, NC State, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, #3 Sonny Amato (Rumson-Fair Haven, NJ) - Arizona State, Cornell, Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Penn, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Virginia Tech #4 Landon Sidun (Norwin, Pennsylvania) - Buffalo, Cornell, Iowa, Minnesota, NC State, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech, West Virginia #10 Dean Anderson (Valiant Prep, AZ) - Arizona State, Minnesota, Missouri, NC State, Nebraska, Northern Iowa, Penn State #14 Max Konopka (Simsbury, CT) - Cornell, Lehigh, NC State, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Penn State, Princeton, Rutgers, Stanford, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin #15 Hayden Schwab (Don Bosco, IA) - Cornell, Iowa, Nebraska, Northern Iowa, Oklahoma State, Stanford, Virginia Tech #17 Arseni Kikiniou (Poway, CA) - Arizona State, Cal Poly, Cornell, Harvard, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Carolina, Purdue, Stanford, Virginia Tech #30 Jimmy Mastny (Marian Central, IL) - Air Force, Arizona State, Army, Cornell, George Mason, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Little Rock, Michigan, NC State, Nebraska, North Carolina, Northern Iowa, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Penn, Purdue, Princeton, SIU Edwardsville, Stanford, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin #38 Dawson Youngblut (Don Bosco, IA) - Cornell, Iowa, Iowa State, NC State, Nebraska, Northern Iowa #39 Gage Lohr (Watertown, SD) - Cornell, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Dakota State, Wisconsin, Wyoming #41 Dale Corbin (Wyoming Seminary, PA) - Army West Point, Cornell, Lehigh, Maryland, Minnesota, NC State, North Carolina, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Rutgers, Utah Valley, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin #52 Luke Hayden (Hickman, MO) - Air Force, Cornell, Missouri, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, Northwestern, Oregon State, Princeton, Purdue, South Dakota State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin #107 Caleb Tyler (Delone Catholic, PA) - Clarion, Duke, Franklin & Marshall, Virginia, Wisconsin
  25. We’re only one day away from the start of Fargo! The women’s action starts on Saturday morning. At InterMat, we tend to look at events like this from a collegiate perspective and this week is no different. For the past two weeks, USA Wrestling has released a handful of state rosters each day. With each subsequent release, we’ve checked each roster to see how many team members have signed or committed to wrestle at the next level. Now, we have a gigantic list of wrestlers who are slated to appear in Fargo - sorted by their future college. Please let me know if anyone has been omitted!
