Austin Matthews (Photo/Edinboro Sports Information) EDINBORO, Pa. -- Edinboro University wrestling coach Tim Flynn has announced that Austin Matthews will sit out the remainder of the 2014-15 season due to a knee injury. Matthews appeared in just three dates for the Fighting Scots before going down and Edinboro will apply for a redshirt year. A transfer from Clarion who qualified for the NCAA Division I National Championships as a true freshman a year ago, Matthews was off to a fast start as a Fighting Scot. Competing at 157 pounds, he was 9-0 and had climbed into the top five in several national rankings before suffering the knee injury. He took first place at the Clarion Open, and in his final competition at the EMU Duals, he won decisions over eighth-ranked Luke Smith of Central Michigan and tenth-ranked Brian Murphy of Michigan. The EMU Duals were on November 15. Matthews has not competed since then. Matthews went 23-9 and won the EWL championship as a freshman at Clarion. He is former standout at Reynolds High School and was a four-time PIAA place winner, claiming the state championship at 152 lbs. as a senior.

Norman, Okla. -- The Oregon State wrestling team scored one of its biggest dual wins of the season on Sunday by edging Oklahoma 20-17 to conclude another successful road trip. The 20th-ranked Beavers (9-0) thus extended their winning streak to 12 consecutive duals over the past two seasons. They opened the weekend with a 36-6 rout at Utah Valley University on Friday night. Major decisions by seniors Alex Elder (157) and Taylor Meeks (184) were crucial for the Beavers. Elder drubbed 12th-ranked Justin DeAngelis to avenge a loss at the Aloha Open, and Meeks crushed Brooks Climmons 14-1 for his sixth consecutive victory by major decision. Ronnie Bresser (125), Devin Reynolds (141), Abraham Rodriguez (149) and Cody Crawford (197) also won decisions for the Beavers, who won 6 of 10 weight classes. “I said before the trip that to beat Oklahoma, we’d have to win the matches we’re supposed to, win a couple where we weren’t favored and get some bonus points,” OSU coach Jim Zalesky said. “We did that today for a very satisfying victory.” The Beavers return home after four consecutive road duals to face Cal Poly at 7 p.m. Saturday in a Pacific-12 Conference dual at Gill Coliseum. It’s Senior Night; seniors Brian Engdahl, Joe Latham, Meeks, Kurtis Ramsay, Pat Rollins and Nick Schlager will be honored before the match. The Beavers then host Boise State in Round 2 of the annual Border War at 8 p.m. Sunday in their Pac-12 finale. OSU won Round 1, 31-3, at Boise on Dec. 13. BOISE, Idaho -- Trailing 17-9, the 25th-ranked Stanford wrestling team won the final three matches of the dual to defeat Boise State, 18-17, Sunday, in Boise, Idaho. The Cardinal improves to 10-2 overall and to 4-1 in the Pac-12, while the Broncos drop to 2-6 on the year and 0-3 in the conference. Celebrating his 21st birthday, Stanford redshirt sophomore Ryan Davies sealed the win with an 8-4 decision over Xavier Callejas at 184 pounds. Davies fell behind 4-2 after the first period. He chose down to start the second and was able to register an escape. Callejas chose to start in the neutral position to begin the third, leaving the door open for Davies. A takedown by Davies, which went under official review, stood and he was able to cap off the win with three near fall points as time ran out. The teams traded wins to start the dual keeping the score tied 6-6. Redshirt sophomore Josh Marchok, who was in the line-up for the first time since Jan. 10, turned in a 6-2 decision over Gaylen Edmo at 285 pounds. He moves to 14-6 overall and 2-0 in duals this season. Also securing a 6-2 victory for Stanford was redshirt freshman Connor Schram. The 133-pounder defeated Boise State true freshman Michael Cook to improve to 11-1 on the year. All of Schram’s wins have come by decision in duals this season. The Broncos took the lead 11-6 as seventh-ranked Geordan Martinez registered an 18-2 technical fall over Stanford freshman Mason Pengilly at 141 pounds. Pengilly, who is listed as a 125-pounder for the Cardinal, was filling in for the injured Isaiah Locsin. Redshirt senior Garrett Schaner cut Boise State’s lead to two with an 8-2 decision over Jake Velarde at 149 pounds. Down 2-1 heading into the second period, Schaner scored an escape and a takedown in the second to gain control of the match. Velarde chose to start in the neutral position in the third and Schaner (17-12) finished him off with another takedown. A fall by Boise State’s Steven Hernandez over Stanford’s Maxwell Hvolbek in 34 seconds at 157 pounds gave the Broncos the 17-9 advantage in the team race. The Cardinal chipped away at the lead, starting with a 5-3 decision over Chris Castillo by Jim Wilson at 165 pounds. Ranked No. 13 in the nation, Wilson trailed 3-1 going into the final period. He started in the down position and quickly scored an escape cutting the lead to 3-2 in favor of Castillo. Wilson was then awarded a point for stalling called on Castillo and was able to get a takedown in the final seconds of the match to win it. He moves to 26-4 on the year and to 10-1 in duals. Redshirt freshman Keaton Subjeck set up the comeback for Davies by posting a 6-2 decision over Austin Dewey at 174 pounds. He led 3-1 after two periods, but gave up an escape to start the third giving Dewey a chance. However, Subjeck was able to take down Dewey and ride him out for the win. He improves to 17-9 overall and to 6-5 in duals this season. Stanford returns to The Farm next week for its final home dual of the year against San Francisco State. LACKSBURG -- The ninth-ranked Virginia Tech wrestling team used three bonus points to hold off 12th-ranked Virginia Sunday at the sold-out Moss Arts Center, winning 18-16 to claim its 10th win over the Cavaliers in the past 11 matchups. “I felt like we wrestled OK,” said Tech head coach Kevin Dresser. “I get it that it was a tough environment to wrestle in for our guys. They’ve been hearing about it and reading about it and seeing tweets and Facebook pictures and countdowns, so to be a little tentative and more tired than normal … that’s the way I would assess it. I think we got more tired in some situations than we normally do, but that come with nerves. I’ll take it, though. Any time you can beat the No. 12 team in the nation, I’ve got to be happy with it. I’m not 100 percent happy because we’ve got to take some steps in some weight classes. I feel like we didn’t charge enough, and this is a charging sport. We’ve got some work to do.” The match started at 174 pounds as the Cavs jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a 3-2 win from No. 7 Blaise Butler over No. 12 Zach Epperly. The Hokies took their first lead of the day at 184 when Austin Gabel rolled past James Suvak, picking up an 11-2 major decision. Zach Nye, ranked 18th in the country at 197 pounds, downed Tech’s Jared Haught 3-1 as UVa went back ahead. The Hokies then won two matches in a row to re-take the lead. Ty Walz, the No. 9 heavyweight in the country, downed Patrick Gillen 3-2 and then No. 4 Joey Dance cruised to a 14-4 major decision over Will Mason at 125 pounds. After the intermission, the Cavaliers took the next two matches as they went back ahead. No. 13 George DiCamillo defeated No. 19 Kevin Norstrem 4-0 at 133 pounds and then Justin Van Hoose beat Jerry Ronnau 8-4 at 141 pounds. The Hokies were wrestling without All-American and third-ranked Devin Carter, who suffered an injury during the week. Trailing 12-11, Sal Mastriani took the mat for the Hokies and the 12th-ranked 149-pounder dominated back-Chris Yankowich with a 19-6 major decision to give the Hokies the lead for good. Nick Brascetta, ranked fifth in the country at 157 pounds, returned to the mat after nearly three months missed due to an injury and picked up an 8-3 win over Andrew Atkinson to give Tech a six-point lead heading to the final bout. Nick Sulzer, ranked second in the country at 165 pounds, was able to pick up a 12-3 major decision over Chad Strube, but wasn’t able to get the pin he needed thanks to the three bonus points picked up by Gabel, Dance and Mastriani as the Hokies held on for the hard-fought win. “We knew coming in that we had our work cut out for us, and their stars shone brightly today,” Virginia coach head coach Steve Garland said. “That’s what won them the match – those bonus points. We’re a couple of guys down, but so are they. It was funny, this wasn’t one of those typical Virginia-Virginia Tech matches where you could predict it. This one was hard to predict. They had a last-second scratch, and we had two where it came down to last-second stuff. They definitely out-wrestled. It’s really simple. This is not just a media event, Virginia-Virginia Tech … this is a national event. People have been emailing me and Facebook-ing us that this is a cool thing, and so we want to keep it going. It was really cool from our perspective. I wish we would have gotten everybody a little louder. In the few situations where we got takedowns and then at the end when we had the match locked up in that last period, you could see the crowd really get into it. But we’ve got to start throwing guys on their back. LARAMIE, Wyo. -- North Dakota State University 125-pounder Josh Rodriguez recorded his second straight overtime win over a ranked opponent, and 141 Mitch Bengtson and 149 Clay Ream each recorded pins as the Bison defeated 18th-ranked Wyoming 22-21 on criteria Sunday, Feb. 1, before 504 fans at the University of Wyoming Sports Complex. NDSU, which has won six straight duals, improves to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in the WWC. The Cowboys drop to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in the WWC. The Bison are scheduled to host Utah Valley University (2-6, 1-1 WWC) at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse. "It was a hard-fought dual against a talented and experienced team," said NDSU head coach Roger Kish. "We're getting better every week. We're a different team than we were in November and December. The energy has been picking up for us and that's what we've been seeing in the wrestling room." Rodriguez, a sophomore from Guadalupe, Calif. (Righetti H.S.), defeated 13th-ranked Tyler Cox 9-7 in tiebreaker-2 overtime. After a scoreless first period, Rodriguez recorded a takedown and near fall, while Cox countered with a pair of escapes and a takdown.The third period saw Rodriguez gain a takedown, but Cox rallied with an escape and a point awarded on NDSU stalling. The wrestlers were scoreless after the first OT period, and then each gained an escape for a 7-7 draw after a pair 30-second periods. Rodriguez recorded a near fall with 17-seconds left and held off Cox in the second tie-breaker. Rodriguez' win put the Bison ahead 21-17 heading into the final match. Rodriguez, who entered the weekend ranked 20th, posted back-to-back overtime wins over 9th-ranked Josh Martinez of Air Force and the 13th-ranked Cox. He has won nine of his last 11 matches to improve to 14-5 overall and 9-1 in dual action. Rodriguez is 4-3 against nationally-ranked opponents this season. "Josh (Rodriguez) had a little adversity. He was able to battle through it and get the win," said Kish. The dual started at 141 pounds where North Dakota State redshirt freshman Mitch Bengtson (St. Cloud, Minn.) started things with a fall over Wyoming's Cole Mendenhall at 4:54. Bengtson recorded his team-leading ninth pin. He is now 19-9 overall and 7-3 in duals. NDSU redshirt freshman Clay Ream (Wentzville, Mo.) followed with a fall over the Cowboys' Jake Elliott at the 5:50 mark to extend the Bison lead to 12-0. Ream, who has won 8 of his last 10 matches, improved to 20-9 overall and 9-1 in duals. He has seven pins on the season. "Both Mitch (Bengtson) and Clay (Ream) came out strong, stayed composed and were able to capitalize. They came out and scored big points for us," said Kish. Host Wyoming rallied to take a 13-12 lead after five matches with a pair of tech falls and a decision. At 157, Archie Colgan dispatched NDSU redshirt freshman Grant Nehring (Kimball, Minn.) 16-0 at 2:08, while 20th-ranked Dakota Friesth recorded a 18-2 tech fall at 6:12 over redshirt freshman Trevour Chavez (Bethel, Alaska) at 165. NDSU 174-pound senior Kurtis Julson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) lost a 4-1 decision to the Cowboys' 15th-ranked Andy McCulley. The teams went back and forth over the next three bouts. North Dakota State's 9th-ranked 184-pound junior Hayden Zillmer (Crosby, Minn.) started slow with a scoreless first period against 19th-ranked Ben Stroh, but built a 4-2 lead after two and posted a 10-4 decision. Zillmer improved to 26-4 overall and has won all 10 dual matches this season. Wyoming's 17th-ranked 197-pounder Shane Woods recorded a 12-1 major decision over redshirt freshman Tommy Petersen (Lakeville, Minn.), while NDSU's 15th-ranked Evan Knutson (Wausau, Wis.) held off Tanner Harms for a 6-4 decision at 285. That win put the Bison ahead 18-17 heading into the 125 bout. Knutson improved to 20-7 overall and 8-2 in duals this season. The Cowboys tied things at 21-all at 133 pounds where Drew Templeman posted a 10-2 major decision over sophomore Hunter Weber (Marshall, Wis.). HEMPSTEAD, NY -- The Broncs won five bouts to defeat long-time rival Hofstra Sunday afternoon. “We’ve been banged up recently but we’re slowly getting people back into the lineup,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “Hopefully we’ll have everybody back soon.” For Rider (10-6, 1-1 EWL) freshman B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) won by fall in the final bout for the win. “It felt good to have BJ in that last match,” Taylor said of the deciding bout. “He did a nice job.” It was Clagon’s fifth pin of the season, improving to 19-7 overall, 12-4 in duals. Also for the Broncs, senior Donald McNeil (Plainville, Mass./Wyoming Seminary) returned from an injury, missing the last three matches, to win 12-6 at 197, giving Rider a 9-6 lead. “I knew we were not going to beat Hofstra if we did not have Donald and Conor (Brennan) back,” Taylor said, “and both of them did a good job doing what they needed to do to help the team.” Freshman Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) and junior Conor Brennan (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) also won, while junior Rob Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional) won by forfeit. Rider and Hofstra were conference rivals from 1973-74 until last year, competing in the East Coast Conference, the East Coast Wrestling Association and the Colonial Athletic Association. “We’re in different conferences now but they are still an old rival so it is nice to defeat them,” Taylor said. This is the second year in a row that Rider has defeated Hofstra (5-9, 3-4 EIWA), but just the third time in the last 16 years. “Before last year they had our number for a while so hopefully we can have their number for a while,” Taylor said. WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- After suffering three consecutive Big Ten losses in the middle of January, the Illinois wrestling team has now won three straight conference bouts after beating Purdue, 21-9, on Sunday afternoon. The Illini, the fourth-ranked team in W.I.N. Magazine's Tournament Power Index, improve to 11-4 (5-3 Big Ten), while the Boilermakers fall to 8-7 (1-5 Big Ten). The dual began with Illinois and Purdue exchanging wins in each of the first four weight classes. Top-ranked Jesse Delgado gave the Illini an early 3-0 lead with a 3-1 decision over Luke Welch at 125 pounds, but the Boilermakers' #11 Danny Sabatello tied the match with a 4-2 upset over #2 Zane Richards in the 133-bound bout. #13 Steven Rodrigues regained the lead for Illinois with a 6-2 decision over Nick Lawrence at 141 pounds before Purdue's Brandon Nelson tied the match at 6-6 with a 6-5 decision over Kyle Langenderfer in the 149-pound match. The Illini gained control of the match in the middle of their lineup, beginning with #2 Isaiah Martinez at 157 pounds. Martinez controlled his match with #13 Doug Welch from start to finish, grabbing an 11-4 win. At 165 pounds, #8 Jackson Morse ended the trend of alternating wins by grabbing a 9-6 decision over Pat Robinson. #8 Zac Brunson made it three consecutive wins for Illinois with an 8-1 win over Chad Welch at 174 pounds, and #18 Nikko Reyes gave the Illini their fourth straight win, and biggest lead of the day, with a 4-2 win over Patrick Kissel at 184 pounds. At 197 pounds, #13 Braden Atwood cut back into the margin with a 7-3 win over Jeff Koepke, but Brooks Black gave Illinois the final 12-point margin of victory with a 2-0 decision over Gelen Robinson in the heavyweight matchup. The Illini will now have a week to recover and prepare for a contest with Wisconsin. After the Hoosiers forfeited the opening match at 125 pounds, the Huskers won each of the next four to build a 21-0 advantage at the halfway point. Eric Montoya (133) earned a 12-4 major decision over Alonzo Shepherd in the second bout before eighth-ranked Anthony Abidin (141) added bonus points with his dominating 18-1 technical fall over Sean Brown. At 149 pounds, Justin Arthur and Trevor Moody entered the third period deadlocked at zero before the Husker sophomore earned a reversal from the down position and tacked on a point for riding time in a 3-0 triumph. Three-time All-American James Green (157) earned three takedowns as he cruised to an 11-4 decision over Luke Blanton. Head coach Cael Sanderson's squad won all ten bouts for its second shut-out of the season. The dual meet began at 125, where No. 8 Jordan Conaway (Abbottstown, Pa.) started Penn State off on the right foot with a 13-6 win over Michigan State's Mitch Rogaliner. Sophomore Jimmy Gulibon (Latrobe, Pa.), ranked No. 9 at 133, put Penn State up 6-0 with a 4-1 win over Garth Yenter after that. Red-shirt freshman Kade Moss (South Jordan, Utah) made it three in a row to start the dual for Penn State, downing MSU's Terry Turner 10-8 at 141. Sophomore Zack Beitz (Mifflintown, Pa.), ranked No. 18 at 149, picked up Penn State's first bonus point with a solid 13-3 major over Spartan junior Nick Trimble. The duo battled evenly for the first minute-plus until Gulibon connected on a high single. The Lion turned the shot into a takedown and a 2-0 lead. He then rode Yenter out to carry that lead, and 1:05 riding time, into the second period. Gulibon chose down to start the second period but was unable to break free of a strong Yenter ride. The Spartan controlled the action for over a minute before Gulibon escaped to a 3-0 lead. Trailing 3-0, Yenter chose down to start the third period and it was Gulibon's turn to control action from the top. Moss fought off an early Turner shot and then connected on his own high single, taking a 2-0 lead at the 2:11 mark. Moss then controlled the action from the top position for :38 before the Spartan escaped. Moss used another high single to take Turner down and led 4-2 after a quick MSU escape. Leading by two, Moss chose defense to start the second stanza and quickly escaped to a 5-2 lead. Acton resumed in the center circle where Turner tripped Moss to his back and picked up two near fall points to take a 6-5 lead. Moss escaped to a 6-6 tie with :05 left in the period. Beitz looked to set the tempo early against the Spartan junior but Trimble was able to keep the Lion sophomore at arm's length and worked the clock under 1:00 still scoreless. Beitz snared Trimble's ankle with a low pick and then pulled the Spartan to him, finishing off the takedown to lead 2-0 with :53 left in the opening period. Beitz rode Trimble out and led by two with :53 in riding time after one period. Beitz chose down to start the second period and quickly worked his way around for a reversal and a 4-0 lead. Trimble escaped with 1:15 left in the period but Beitz was relentless, circling behind a Trimble shot for another takedown and a 6-1 lead with under a minute left in the period. Beitz led 6-1 with 2:11 riding time after two and Trimble chose neutral to start the third stanza. Beitz was unfazed, quickly taking Trimble down and cutting him loose to an 8-2 score with 1:20 left to wrestle. With the riding time point clinched, Beitz countered another low Trimble shot, whirling around behind the Spartan and finishing off a takedown on the edge of the mat. Beitz cut him loose on more time and then fought off a Trimble shot, scrambling his way to a final takedown and a 13-3 major with 2:28 in riding time. 157: Red-shirt freshman Cody Law (Windber, Pa.) took on MSU's Josh Pennell at 157. Law scored first, using a fast low single to take an early 2-1 lead after cutting Pennell loose. He continued his early offense, picking up a second takedown and cut to lead 4-2 with just under 2:00 to wrestle. Law had his offense working early, scoring on a third single leg to lead 6-2. He worked up :46 in riding time before cutting Pennell loose and then turned a low single into a fourth takedown and an early 8-3 lead. Law then rode Pennell out and carried that lead, plus 1:21 in riding time, into the second stanza. Law chose down to start the second period and worked his way to an escape and a 9-3 lead :30 into the period. He then worked a mid-shot into another takedown and cut to lead 11-4 at the 1:00 mark. Law tacked on one more takedown and cut before Pennell picked up a last second takedown. Trailing 13-7, Pennell chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped t a 13-8 score. Law was unfazed, however, and picked up yet another takedown to lead 15-9 after cutting Pennell loose. Hammond drew first blood, trying to connect on an early throw but settling for the takedown instead. The Lion freshman then controlled the MSU junior for over a minute, trying to turn him for back points during a strong ride. Wildmo was able to roll through each effort and escaped to a 2-1 score with 1:21 on the clock. Wildmo took a 3-2 lead with :40 on the clock, turning a low single leg into a takedown with :38 left in the opening period. Hammond quickly escaped to a 3-3 tie and then turned in to Wildmo trying to score in the period's final seconds. Wildmo held firm and the bout moved to the second stanza tied 3-3. Wildmo chose down to start the third period and Hammond was able to keep control, building up over 2:00 in riding time with a strong ride. Wildmo was able to roll through each turning effort and escaped to a 4-3 lead with :42 on the clock (Hammond had 2:06 in riding time). Hammond used a low shot to take a 5-4 lead with a takedown ad the :27 mark. Wildmo escaped to a 5-5 tie at the buzzer but Hammond had 2:27 in time. Hammond chose down to start the third and was hit with his third false start caution, giving Wildmo a point and a 6-5 lead. Hammond escaped to a 6-6 tie and had over 2:00 in riding time. Hammond forced Wildmo's shoulders to the mat and moved behind him for a takedown and an 8-7 lead after a quick Wildmo escape. The Spartan nearly scored at the :11 mark but action moved out of bounds. Hammond picked up one more point off 2:25 in riding time to post the 9-7 win. 174: Senior Matt Brown (West Valley City, Utah), ranked No. 3 at 174, met Nick Proctor. Brown scored quickly, using a low single to gain control of Proctor and work his way to a takedown and a 2-0 lead. After a bit of work up top, Brown cut Proctor loose and then quickly took him down a second time to lead 4-2 at the :50 mark. The Lion senior countered a Proctor shot, notched a third takedown with :25 left and cut him loose again. A fourth takedown at the :10 mark gave Brown an 8-3 lead after one. Brown chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 9-3 lead. Brown dominated the second period much like the first, adding three more takedowns in the first minute-plus. He then worked to turn the Spartan for back points over the last :30 and with just :06 left in the second stanza, got the fall at the 5:54 mark. The pin was the 30th of Brown's career, tied for 11th all-time at Penn State. 184: Red-shirt freshman Matt McCutcheon (Apollo, Pa.), ranked No. 17 at 184, battled senior John Rizqallah. The Lion freshman and the Spartan senior battled evenly for the bout's first two minutes before McCutcheon looked to score on a low single. Rizqallah tried to counter the shot but McCutcheon was able to continue to scramble, turning the single into a double and a 2-0 lead with :27 on the clock. A short ride out gave the Lion freshman a 2-0 lead after one period. McCutcheon chose down to start the third period but Rizqallah was strong on offense. McCutcheon was steady however, gaining control of Rizqallah's ankle, working his way around behind the Spartan and taking a 4-0 lead with a reversal. Rizqallah managed an escape but McCutcheon quickly turned shoulder control into a takedown on the edge of the mat and led 6-1 after two periods. Rizqallah chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 6-2 score. McCutcheon connected on a low single on the edge of the mat and picked up another takedown with :35 left to wrestle, upping his lead to 8-2. The veteran tandem battled evenly for nearly two minutes-plus with neither wrestler mounting a serious offensive charge. McIntosh chose down to start the second period and steadily worked his way to an escape and a 1-0 lead. McIntosh tried to connect on a high single but McDiarmid was able to consistently back out of trouble to keep the Lion junior at arm's length. Trailing by one, McDiarmid chose down to start the third period and McIntosh was able to break the Spartan down on offense. McIntosh dominated action from the top position, building up over 1:00 in riding time while looking for a turning combination. McIntosh finished off the ride out and, with 1:35 in riding time, posted the 2-0 decision. 285: Lion senior Jimmy Lawson (Toms River, N.J.), ranked No. 6 at 285, battled Chris Nash. Lawson worked the middle of the mat, countering a Nash shot and then forcing his chest to the mat for a takedown and a 2-0 lead midway through the opening period. Lawson put together a strong ride, working Nash for a potential turning combination for over a minute before the Spartan escaped to a 2-1 score. Lawson once again forced Nash's shoulders to the mat and picked up a second takedown late in the period to lead 4-1 after one. Nash chose down to start the second period and Lawson continued to build up riding time. With over 2:00 in riding time, Lawson spent the latter half of the second period trying to turn Nash for back points. Nash escaped to a 4-2 score with :28 on the clock. Leading 4-2 with 2:58 in time, Lawson chose down to start the third period. A quick escaped gave the Lion senior a 5-2 lead with a clinched riding time point. Lawson tried to force the issue on offense but Nash was able to step back repeatedly to keep the Nittany Lion from picking up another takedown. Lawson added a final takedown at the :15 mark and, with a short ride out and 2:45 in riding time, posted the 8-2 win.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- South Dakota State (9-7, 2-1 WWC) closed out its final regular-season road trip Sunday afternoon with a 23-9 win over Air Force. SDSU picked up a pair of major decisions at 157 and 174 en route to the win. “We knew we were going to get tested on the backend of the road trip,” head coach Chris Bono said. "Our guys responded and performed well. We are excited to get back home and in the room leading up to UVU." Following a 1-0 decision to open the dual at 141-lbs by Luke Zilverberg, SDSU won back-to-back matches, as Alex Kocer and #7 Cody Pack built a 7-3 lead for the Jacks. Kocer threatened to major Jerry McGinty, but couldn’t score a late takedown and won 7-0. Kocer scored takedowns in all three periods and added an escape in the third. At 157, #7 Cody Pack battled Sam Kreimier to a 13-4 major decision. Pack tallied multiple takedowns in the first and third periods en route to the major. Everard made it four wins in a row for the Jacks, as the junior heavyweight beat Marcus Malacek, 5-2. Following a loss at 125 to #9 Josh Martinez, junior Brance Simms beat Anthony McHugh, 6-4 in sudden victory. Simms needed a late reversal in the third period to force overtime, but was able to do so and secured the decisive takedown to get the win. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Trailing 14-5 following five matches, the fourth-ranked Ohio State wrestling team stormed back to win four of the final five matches, including three via tech fall, to secure a 23-17 victory over No. 22 Rutgers on Sunday in front of a sold-out crowd at the College Avenue Gym. With the triumph, the Buckeyes extend their winning streak to seven matches while improving to 11-3 overall (7-1 Big Ten). Rutgers is 11-6, 1-6. The Buckeyes' surge was highlighted by Bo Jordan (165 pounds), Kenny Courts (184 pounds) and Kyle Snyder (197), who all earned tech falls. Nathan Tomasello also started the match at 125 pounds with a tech fall. Ohio State's other win came from Mark Martin, who defeated 19th-ranked Phil Bakuckas, 8-2, at 174 pounds. Tomasello got the Buckeyes out to a fast start, racking up points early and often on his way to a 23-8 tech fall over Josh Patrick. After intermission, Jordan got Ohio State back on the scoreboard with a dominating 16-0 tech fall over Nick Visicaro. The dual victory improved the Tigers to 18-0 this season, tying the all-time Mizzou wrestling single season wins mark. Redshirt freshman Willie Miklus highlighted the team's six bonus points wins, as he pinned Cody Caldwell in just 24 seconds. Redshirt senior Drake Houdashelt produced the other highlight win against the Panthers, defeating Tyler Patten by 17-2 technical fall. Redshirt senior Alan Waters set the tone immediately for the host Tigers, as he tallied an impressive 10-1 major decision over No. 6 Dylan Peters. Redshirt sophomores Zach Synon and Lavion Mayes followed Waters' win with a 6-0 decision and 12-4 major decision, respectively. NORMAN, Oklahoma -- The No. 8 Iowa State wrestling team(7-2, 1-1 Big 12) defeated Oklahoma (6-6, 1-2 Big 12) 26-18 today. ISU’s winning efforts were propelled by four bonus-point victories, including two pins. No. 6 Earl Hall was pitted against No. 2 Cody Brewer in the second match of the dual. Brewer got in on a single leg on Hall, and it looked like he’d go up 2-0 early in the match. However, Hall ran through Brewer’s grasp, and was able to bring Brewer to his back and secure a pin in 1:02. The fall marked the fourth top-10 opponent Hall has defeated in the New Year. Up next for the Cyclones was Dante Rodriguez at 141. He also secured bonus points for Iowa State with a 17-6 major decision over Oklahoma’s Trae Blackwell. Rodriguez recorded five takedowns, a two-point near-fall and a three-point near-fall in his match. The freshman now has 11 bonus-point victories on the year. No. 14 Gabe Moreno and No. 4 Michael Moreno also notched victories for the Iowa Staters at their respective weight classes. G. The No. 18 ranked Wyoming Cowboy wrestling team captured the final five matches of the night, including three falls by Dakota Friesth at 165 pounds, Shane Woods at 197 and Tanner Harms at 285 to record a convincing 32-10 home win over South Dakota State. Friday night marked the 100th dual during the seven years that Mark Branch has served as head coach of the Cowboys, and the victory was the 70th dual win for the Pokes during that span. The win was Wyoming's seventh consecutive dual victory this season and improved the Pokes' dual record to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in the Western Wrestling Conference. South Dakota State fell to 8-7 and 1-1 in the WWC with the loss. Wyoming began the night with an 8-0 major decision by senior Tyler Cox, who is ranked No. 11 in the country at 125 pounds. That was followed by a 4-1 decision from Cowboy sophomore Drew Templeman at 133 to give Wyoming a 7-0 team lead. But South Dakota State fought back to win the next three matches. SDSU's Luke Zilverberg posted a 7-5 win over Wyoming's Cole Mendenhall at 141 pounds. After the dual, Branch spoke to the media about what he saw from his Cowboy squad. "We need to be more aggressive. Even in some wins I wasn't real happy," said Branch. "Obviously in the losses, I didn't think we wrestled with a lot of emotion. But then we saw some emotion in the second half of the dual, which is nice, and we saw some good performances. Pins are always good, so that got me in a better mood finishing with a couple pins. "If you could point to two guys, I think Tanner (Harms) came out aggressive against a kid who beat him last year. He came out in the first five seconds and took a nice shot and got the takedown. He was really a hammer on top, and got the pin. The second guy tonight was Drew Templeman. Drew has been right there, trying to break through and tonight he got a good win over a good kid. He's been in several matches like he was today, but he's lost a little discipline and not been able to close it out. Tonight it was good to see him close it out with a solid takedown in the third period. "There were some good things, but all 10 guys didn't come out and wrestle the way we're supposed to wrestle. The Hawkeye senior 165-pounder opened Friday night's dual meet against top-ranked Minnesota by pinning Brandon Kingsley, which helped propel Iowa to a 23-12 victory in front of 13,630 fans at Williams Arena in Minneapolis. After giving up the first takedown, Moore battled back to tie the match at 2-2 in the second period. He then countered a Kingsley attack and used a whipover to pin the Gopher sophomore at 4:27. "He got a dose of some heavy hips and then it just felt good when I locked it up," said Moore, who is ranked seventh at 165 pounds. "It was a good hold." The Hawkeyes carried the momentum to 174 pounds, where second-ranked Mike Evans remained undefeated on the season with a 3-1 win in sudden victory over fourth-ranked Logan Storley. The two Big Ten rivals traded escapes in the second and third periods. Then, 27 seconds into sudden victory, Evans shot a double leg and Storley attempted to counter by rolling through, but the Hawkeye senior was awarded the match-winning takedown. It was Evans' second straight win over Storley, who still leads their all-time series 3-2. "He tried to scramble out, but it's overtime," said Evans. The eighth-ranked Brooks gave up the opening takedown, but responded with a takedown of his own in the first period and added two takedowns in each of the last two periods to pull away for a comfortable victory. However, it would be hard to tell that was the case listening to the winning coach after the dual meet. "Overall, we've got work to do," said Brands. "Even Gilman's got work to do. We've just got to keep putting an edge on these guys. I don't think it's a matter of putting a grade on it as much as it is to keep moving forward." CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The Illinois wrestling team came out strong and performed well up and down the lineup against Maryland on Friday evening. The Illini, the fourth-ranked team in W.I.N. Magazine's Tournament Power Index, took control of the bout early and never looked back, shell shocking the Terrapins, 32-3. Illinois improves to 10-4 (4-3 Big Ten), while the Maryland falls to 5-12 (0-6 Big Ten). The dual got off to a fantastic start for the home squad, as #2 Isaiah Martinez and #8 Jackson Morse each recorded second-period technical falls to give the Illini an early 10-0 lead. Martinez defeated Lou Mascola, 20-4, at 157 pounds, while Morse took down Tyler Manion by a score of 18-2 at 165 pounds. The technical fall by Martinez was his eighth of the season, adding to his NCAA Division I leading total. The rest of the Illinois lineup continued to add to the double-digit lead, as the Illini would go on to win nine of the 10 weight classes. At 174, #8 Zac Brunson earned a 4-1 decision over Josh Snook, and #18 Nikko Reyes added a 6-2 victory over Tony Gardner in the 184-pound matchup. Jeff Koepke came away with a 4-3 decision over Rob Fitzgerald at 197 pounds, while Brooks Black also came away with a one-point win over All-American Spencer Myers at heavyweight. Black used an escape in the final seconds of the first tiebreaker to grab the upset. At 125 pounds, #1 Jesse Delgado made his along awaited return to the Illinois lineup after being sidelined due to injury for over two months. Delgado faced Josh Polacek in what amounted to a feeling out process for the two-time defending NCAA and Big Ten champ. Delgado came away with a 3-2 decision. #2 Zane Richards earned Illinois' third extra-point victory of the night in the 133-pound bout, defeating #16 Geoffrey Alexander, 14-4. #13 Steven Rodrigues earned a 3-2 decision over Shyheim Brown at 141 pounds for Illinois' final points of the night. In the bout's final matchup, Maryland's Ben Dorsay scored a last-second takedown on Kyle Langenderfer to win 3-1 and prevent the shutout. Orem, Utah -- Alex Elder and Seth Thomas started the match off with bonus points and the Oregon State wrestling team won its 11th consecutive dual on Friday night with a 36-6 victory at Utah Valley University. Elder (157) earned a technical fall and Thomas pinned to give the Beavers (8-0) an quick 11-0 lead. OSU won six more weight classes to begin its second straight weekend road trip in impressive fashion. Cody Crawford (197) and Devin Reynolds (141) added pins and Taylor Meeks (184) won by major decision as the Beavers earned bonus points in five of their eight victories. Ronnie Bresser (125), Nate Keeve (hwt.) and Abraham Rodriguez (149) added wins by decision. "Once again we got bonus points early and that got us going," OSU coach Jim Zalesky said. BLOOMSBURG, PA -- The short-handed Broncs, with just five starters in the lineup, won six of 10 bouts to defeat Bloomsburg in an Eastern Wrestling League dual meet Friday. “I feel good getting a conference win,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “Anytime you can get a win with five guys out you have to feel good. It is tough competing at 50 percent.” For Rider (9-6, 2-1 EWL) freshman Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) won by fall, his fourth pin of the season, to improve to 22-6 on the season, giving Rider a 17-3 lead. Freshman B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) won a major decision to improve to 18-7 on the season. Senior Chuck Zeisloft (Woodbury Heights, NJ/Gateway) won in overtime to give Rider a 7-3 lead. “Chuck did a nice job of getting that takedown in overtime,” Taylor said. “That was a very close match.” Junior Rob Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional) won a major decision to improve to 18-6 overall, 12-3 in duals and 3-0 in the EWL. “Rob really worked hard, him and BJ and Chad got bonus points for us tonight,” Taylor said. “That really helped us. It (being shorthanded) puts added pressure on them but thankfully they are guys who can handle that. They are capable of stepping up.” Junior Greg Velasco (Union Beach, NJ/Keyport) won for the final score. “We thought we would win at heavyweight and Greg did,” Taylor said. “The (substitute) wrestlers who were put in tonight fought hard,” Taylor said, “and that is all you can ask. They did a good job. They did what they could do.” Rider defeated Bloomsburg 20-16 last season, giving Coach Taylor milestone win number 400. Rider and Bloomsburg have now met 15 times, with Rider winning nine. Rider travels to former conference rival Hofstra Sunday afternoon. “Hopefully we can get a few of our wrestlers back for Sunday,” said Taylor, who now has 413 career wins. “Hofstra is solid again this year. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team won its 10th match of the season with a near-perfect 36-3 victory against Davidson. The Mocs were a one-point loss away from a shutout, while improving to 10-5 overall and 5-0 in SoCon action. The Wildcats drop to 4-10, 0-3 in SoCon matches. “Another good win for us today, stated head coach Heath Eslinger. “You are always going to have some error, we just hope we eliminate all of it by the time we get to the Southern Conference tournament and the NCAA Tournament. Regardless, it was a good day of wrestling and thanks to all of the faculty and staff who came out to see a lunch time dual.” Davidson forfeited at 125 and Chattanooga scored bonus points in four of the other nine bouts. That was more than enough to improve the Mocs all-time record against the Wildcats to 23-0. Sophomore Michael Pongracz (141) and freshman Jacob Murphy (149) both had major decisions while freshman Justin Lampe (165) and sophomore Jared Johnson (285) scored technical falls. Chattanooga held a 30-4 advantage in takedowns, with 11 of those put on the board by Lampe in his win over Patric Devlin. Lampe jumped out to a quick lead with five takedowns in the first period alone. He finished with a 23-8 victory to improve to 3-2 in SoCon matches. Johnson controlled his match throughout, getting nine back points in a 17-0 win over Will Cooley. He nearly had Cooley pinned twice before the buzzer saved the fall. Johnson is a team-best 25-6 overall and 5-0 in SoCon action. Senior Nick Soto scored career win No. 109 with an 8-3 decision over Anthony Elias at 133. He is now tied for sixth on UTC’s all-time wins list with Ben Reichel (109-37-2 - 1985-89). The Mocs hit the road next weekend for a visit to Appalachian State. UTC can wrap up at least a share of its third-straight SoCon regular season title with a win over the Mountaineers. Match time is set for 2:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) in Boone, N.C. The Mocs have won 14 titles since the league starting recognizing a season champion in 1994. Chattanooga also has 28 tournament trophies since joining the SoCon in 1978. USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- North Dakota State University won seven out of 10 matches including a dramatic overtime win by 125-pound Josh Rodriguez, along with pins from 157-pound Grant Nehring and 184-pound Hayden Zillmer to defeat host Air Force 28-11 in a Western Wrestling Conference dual on Friday, Jan. 30. It was the fifth straight dual win for NDSU, which improves to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in the WWC. Air Force is 5-5 overall and 0-3 in the WWC. The Bison travel to Laramie Sunday, Feb. 1, to face 18th-ranked Wyoming (7-2, 3-0 WWC). The Cowboys defeated South Dakota State 32-10 on Friday night. In the final match of the night, Rodriguez, a sophomore from Guadalupe, Calif. (Righetti H.S.), rallied from a 3-0 deficit after two periods to defeat 9th-ranked Josh Martinez of Air Force. He registered a pair of takedowns including one with less than :20-seconds and didn't allow an escape to force overtime. Rodriguez, who entered the weekend ranked 20th, came up with another takedown late in the overtime period to record the win. He improves to 13-5 overall and 8-1 in duals. Rodriguez, who has won eight of his last 10 matches, is 3-3 against nationally-ranked competition. With North Dakota State clinging to a 7-3 lead after three matches, redshirt freshman 157 Nehring (Kimball, Minn.) provided a boost with his second pin of the season over Air Force's Sam Kreimer at the 2:34 mark of the first period. NORFOLK, Va. -- The 18th-ranked Old Dominion Monarchs extended their winning streak to five matches after taking down No. 27 Ohio, 25-9, on Friday night at the Ted Constant Center. The Monarchs are now 10-3 on the season, with their three losses coming to top-25 competition. No. 17 Brandon Jeske started the match out strong, winning the 125-pound bout by a 9-2 decision. Michael Hayes followed with another decision, earning three more team points for ODU to give the Monarchs a 6-0 lead. No. 9 Chris Mecate took down his opponent, Joel Shump, by a 15-0 tech fall. The Monarchs led the Bobcats 11-0 after three bouts. No. 10 Lenny Richardson gave the crowd an exciting match, downing No. 7 Tywan Claxton 4-1 in sudden victory. No. 32 TC Warner dropped a 7-2 decision to No. 29 Spartak Chino, as the Bobcats notched their first points of the night. ODU led Ohio 14-3 with six matches left. KENT, Ohio -- Kent State improved to 3-2 in Mid-American Conference duals with a 25-9 victory over Eastern Michigan Friday night at the M.A.C. Center. With over 2,000 in attendance, the Golden Flashes made it a Beauty & The Beast sweep for the third straight year as Kent State's gymnastics team defeated Pittsburgh. "One of our goals is beat all of the core MAC schools, and so far we're on track to do that," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said of the Flashes' wins over Eastern Michigan, Ohio and Buffalo. After splitting the first four matches, Ian Miller started a string of four straight Kent State victories with a 19-4 technical fall over Brandon Zeerip. Miller kept the gas pedal down throughout the third period, scored a takedown with under five seconds left and rode Zeerip out to secure the tech fall with riding time. "Ian just overwhelms his opponents," Andrassy said. "He and Tyler Small both worked real hard to get us extra team points." Small beat the final buzzer with a reversal to secure a 9-1 major decision. After a second period reversal, Small immediately locked up a cradle that turned into a three-point near fall for a 7-0 lead. Junior Tyler Buckwalter found himself in a back-and-forth battle that was tied 5-5, before pulling away with a 9-5 victory. Both wrestlers recorded three-point near falls in the first period. Junior Caleb Marsh had a huge first period in his 12-2 major decision over Kanye MacCallum. In his first match in over a month, Marsh turned MacCallum with a bow-and-arrow three times in the first, racking up nine near fall points. Scrappy redshirt freshman Jerald Spohn overcame a 3-2 deficit after a period to down Mike Curby 6-4. "Jerald still makes a lot of mistakes, but he works so hard, it wins him matches," Andrassy said. Sophomore Mimmo Lytle improved to 5-0 in MAC duals with a 9-3 victory over Gage Hutchison. Lytle broke things open with a third period reversal, before building up riding time. "Any time you can score nine points as a heavyweight, you're putting yourself in great position to win," Andrassy said. Junior Del Vinas started the night with a 6-4 victory against Blake Caudill. Vinas scored takedowns in the second and third periods, erasing a two-point deficit early in the second. "Del was still a little hesitant," Andrassy said. "I think he could have scored a lot more." Junior Mack McGuire suffered his first conference loss, a 4-2 setback to Vincent Pizzuto in overtime. Pizzuto locked up a cradle from the neutral position and scooted behind McGuire for the takedown.
