Rest assured, Smith does NO ONE wrong. Not the kid who cuts his grass, not his assistants, and certainly not his wrestlers. He has earned his rep as above reproach. I trust his judgment.

I think it’s similar, albeit not identical, to the Ellis/Bradley situation in 2009. Ellis/Hawks was the established guy with great potential, while Bradley/Whiting was the hotshot recruit. Smith took some crap for not starting Bradley as a Frosh, but Ellis went on to a title that year. Pritts was not shy about his preference for Bradley and left for ASU soon thereafter. Bradley obviously holds no ill will about the situation as he’s currently on staff.

Bradly talked about this on the “Go Earn it” podcast with Shane Sparks. Check it out if you’re a fan of either, talks in depth about this topic.

I think NIL is tricky for foreign student-athletes. They come via a student visa, which technically does not allow them to work the same as a domestic student. I think this was in the news recently regarding a basketball player from Canada who could not participate in NIL

Zach Edey from Purdue. National player of the year 2x and is unable to get NIL monday 😕

Would they drop to D2, AD and CoAd have no ties to wrestling or building sports program's.   He raised a lot of money for Memphis for basketball but that’s when CAL was there and then was let go.

I can’t imagine any program being willing to drop to d2, probably not a great look for a school.

  4. After more digging, Buffalo currently sponsors 6 men’s sports and 8 women’s sports. This is the exact minimum of men’s teams a university can have to be considered D1.

“Division 1 schools must sponsor seven men's and seven women's sports at a minimum, or six men's sports and eight women's sports at a minimum.”

Buffalo is trapped with wrestling, unless they want to add another men’s sport to cut wrestling or drop to d2 or whatever that process would look like.

Feels like the bomb will be coming out of the blue, AD has no idea of concerns.   Will they follow EMU as next MAC program to drop wrestling.

100%. Unfortunately sounds like we're on the fast track to UB dropping.

Why do we think this when they posted the job, mentioned a new hire being announced, and mentioned looking towards the future?

He who shall not be named?

Like I said, I remembered seeing the announcement about Martori retiring, I  didn’t realize that meant the club was closing…

But let’s name him, just for those who may not know who you mean…not me of course, I know “he who shall not be named” but the others.

Why is Florida off this list?? Are they adding one, that I missed?

Florida, GA, Texas (adding one currently) all need a school the recognizes that they are “good” Hs wrestling states and can have success and attract in state talent.

hopefully we see a day where all states have a D1 team, but those three are a good start.

I'm sorry. I tried, but I can't resist following up: he is singing a song about macho-men disfiguring themselves to signal that they are macho to a decidedly non-macho post-punk-electro-Kraftwerk-Gary Nyman track. It's absurd. But "terrible"? It might not be funny (eye of the beholder, and the like), but didn't it achieve the purpose, I.e. to be ridiculously stupid?

Edit: isn't it just beneath contempt?

Idk what half this means, it is ridiculously stupid, like you said, not sure how that differs from “terrible”

I hope it works for them. Mike Wehler seems like a really good dude.

However, with them being a Catholic University, what is the cost for a school to move from Division II to Division I?

Mercyhurst has an enrollment of somewhere between 2,500 to 4,500 (the data isn't clear), and with an all-in cost of just south of $60,000 a year (this year), and an endowment of around $40 million, they may have to look at "trimming the fat."

I’m biased, but they can remove 2 men rowing teams, a women’s rowing team, men+ women’s water polo, and women’s bowling before they start to look at wrestling.

Askren won't last long at the college level where they have to abide by rules with recruiting and contact of prospective athletes. He would be a thorn in the side of compliance.

Yeah idk why people say this. Askren is a goof but he seems like a good dude. Based on what I’ve seen on FRL and YouTube, at least.

Wouldn't it be incredible if it turns out these two are actually intelligent and choose a decent school for academics.  Lehigh, or Ivy League, instead of any state U.

I know so little about them but my gut feel has been cornell for some reason.
