I think 92 will be close between Firouzpour, Azimi and Ghassempour.  Azimi did well against Hilday

The issue is that Ghasempour is pencilled in as an 86 kg wrestler, I understand why he wants to win an Olympic medal but he is in a weird position where he would need to sacrifice potentially winning multiple world titles at 92 over a chance he gets on the podium at the Olympics. He is a far better wrestler at 92 than at 86.

77 is going to be interesting since Oskou won Zagreb so I'm assuming he is the front runner. I think Abdi won Vehbi Emre this year as well so our 77's aren't looking too bad at the moment. I'm more concerned about our 60 wrestlers tbh. Especially since Ahmadivafa doesn't look too good at 60 since moving up from 55.

Oskou and Abdevali are our front runners at 77kg, though Abdevali has a much higher ceiling. Oskou won Zagreb but the level of competition was not that high. Abdevali placed 5th in the world in an Olympic weight class in his senior world debut and didn't get blown away by anyone (including the world champ), that's reasonably good for a 21 year old. He can be a medal threat in a few years. He's better than Amin Kaviani, at least, lol. Kaviani must be the most disappointing 2x junior world champion ever.

60kg is so tough, might be the most competitive weight class in wrestling. Ahmadi struggles with the Japanese wrestlers (Inaba and Shiotani, and he didn't even wrestle Gomi yet). He's young but currently far off the pace, we don't really have anyone consistent at 60kg. Naserpour, Dehbozorgi, Ahmadi, Abbaspour are all around the same level and inconsistent.

As for 86kg, I don't think Rahmani and Shamsipour are ready to compete for medals yet, so Ghasempour at 86kg is still our best bet. I really like Azimi at 92kg unless Yazdani drops to 92kg. Azimi only lost to Hidlay because of a lost challenge point. Azimi, Firouzpour, and Rahmani all seem to lose to each other randomly, unfortunately. We need someone to separate themselves. But Azarpira has 97kg locked down, that's for sure.

In theory, he can wrestler at 92 at the worlds and then go for it at the Olympics at 86.  I honestly don't know if he will win gold at either weight class at the worlds.  I think he has strong domestic challengers at both weights, and may not even make the team

Abdevali and Bouveiri Piani seem like good prospects to keep an eye out for but neither of them have that X factor for me. Maybe I have super high expectations but guys like Esmaeili, Hedayati and Ahmadi have this look to them which show they are going to be stars. I completely agree with your take that 60kg is the toughest weight class. The good greco countries all have solid reps and even the not so good ones have good wrestlers, the depth of the weight class makes it incredibly hard to stand out. I'm hoping we find someone eventually. At 86kg I honestly want Rahmani over Ghasempour, Rahmani is a special talent that I think we need to invest in. I'm not sure why they didn't send him to the Islamic Solidarity Games tbh.

The problem with that is he can't handle the weight cut, he seems to be a guy that prefers to stay at one weight long term as opposed to chopping and changing. I also agree with the fact that he might not even make the team as well but he has a better chance of winning worlds at 92 than he does at 86.

I actually our best chance at 86 is Hassan Yazdani.

he looks a bit flabby and I think th could go back to go 86 I’d th tried

He ran over everyone at 97 until he ran into Buchanan, so, I don’t think he is over the hill yet.

it’s just that 97 is far more competitive than 86.

I know it’s a very tall order, but I would love to see him cut down to 86.  He has no shot at 97

I think that ship has sailed in all honesty. I can see him cutting down to 92 but 86 would be too much. It's unfortunate what happened at the Olympics against Ramazanov or else he would have been a two time Olympic champion. 97 is a weight class with so many good wrestlers Snyder, Sadulaev, Tazhudinov, Yoshida, Aitmukhan, Azarpira whilst 86 was just Taylor and Yazdani for so long.

Yes, I agree, but I think it's doable.  I think he could easily get back to 92 in time for the next world championship, and then it would be very difficult but doable to cut down to 86 in time for the olympics.  I know it's next to impossible, but I think that is his only shot for another olympic medal.  If he does make it down to 86, I would consider him the heavy favorite for gold

Iran's likely line up for the Asian championship

I think Rahmani got screwed a little bit.  He said he'd rather compete at 86 and somehow, he ended up wrestling at 92.  meanwhile Ghassempour has said he'd rather compete at 92 for now, and he ended up wrestling at 86.  I think Iran missed a golden opportunity to evaluate Rahmani at 86 in another seniors tournament

Rahmani lost to Azimi and Hidlay in Zagreb and to Ghasempour (and Moldova) last year, he has no room to complain. Would like to see more of Shamsipour instead

will be great to see Sina again at 70kg, he's a huge talent

Funny to see Amir Yazdani at 74 again but I guess we don't have many other options

Yeah 92 makes the most sense tbh. I think the competition at 92 is also weaker so it would be easier for him to win another gold as well.

I completely agree Rahmani should have been sent to Asians with Ghasempour sent to a ranking series tournament. I'm interested to see how Ahmad Javan and Nemati perform as well. Nemati did well and had a close match with Sujeet in Zagreb and I'm wondering whether last years' silver was a fluke or if we found a solid 61 rep.

Rahmani lost at 92 not 86. As a pure 86 kg wrestler he is the best prospect we have, Shamsipour is great too but he isn't better than Rahmani atm. I agree with your take on Sina Khalili he is really good and I'm excited to watch him wrestle again. Surely we can develop a better 74 than Amir Mohammad Yazdani. I mean with all the talent in the country its bizarre our middle weights are so poor.

it was his decision to move up to 92. he lost to Moldova, Ghasempour, Valencia, and McNelly at 86 last year. he's a good talent but has never won gold at world level, even at age level.

Shamsipour is not better but he is only 18 years old.

Emami is still our best 74 wrestler, unfortunately. Placed 5th last year (with a good draw), so he's not miles off a medal, but probably past his best. Still, not sure why they are still experimenting with Yazdani at 74.

well, yes, that would be another gold at worlds.  The big question will be what he should do at the olympics, which will most likely be his last tournament.

Khorasan wins Iran Cadet championship

I am thrilled to see a province other than Mazandaran or Tehran win.

Stronger competition is good

Interesting to see how that translates to senior level success in a couple years. They already have Ahmad Javan at 61 so it would be good to see more high quality wrestlers coming out from different provinces. However is it that Khorasan has gotten better or is it that the other provinces have gotten worse?

Azarpira is not going to the Albania ranking series after all.

Goleij was supposed to go to the Asian Championship.  He got hurt, so Azarpira will go to the Asian championship instead.  It’s a pity.

Is anyone going there instead of Azarpira though? If Goleij is hurt and Azarpira is a no go and Yazdani went last time, who we got at 97 for Iran as the next dude? Babalu -- hopefully not. Is Azimi doing 97 as well?

Azimi did not have as much success at 97

seems his natural weight is 86 or 92
