good wins from Jarkani at 63kg and Oskou at 77kg

Jarkani can compete with Keshtkar (2025 world bronze) for the 63kg spot

Oskou can compete with Abdevali (2025 world 5th) for the 77kg spot

Our weakest GR weights remain: 60 and 77. We have medal threats at every other weight. If Oskou can fill the 77kg gap and Ahmadi Vafa can fill the 60kg gap then our GR team will be unreachable

Yousefi had a great 2025 and broke every wrestler he faced except for Hedayati in national trials, who beat him 3-0

True. But Yusefi’s wrestling is only useful for number crunchers who wanna track who he beat and what medals he earned- not for fans who just wanna enjoy six minutes of wrestling

Tamas Lorincz was an Olympic and world champion

He retired right after his olympic gold by which point he was in his mid 30s and a 1x world champion. So he was never a transcended his sport star or even the towering figure in his weight classes. He's exactly the mold that I am talking about.

wrestlers generally don't become superstars that transcend the sport. Sadulaev, Yazdani and David Taylor could walk around most cities in the world and no one would have a clue who they are. So you are expecting a lot for a Hungarian wrestler to become the next Conor McGregor.

Well you said that, not me. I never said I expected a wrestler to become world on the street famous. By transcend the sport, I just meant something like Karelin or even Sadualev. Meaning that at least some non wrestling interest spheres have heard of you.

I think it's reasonable to expect Hungary to have a Mirzazadeh, Borrerro, type wrestler. They haven't had one solid favorite or clear number one at an olympic weight class that I can think of in a long time. Which is strange given how they produce so many quality wrestlers.

No.

I think they were the number ones and favorites at their weights though.

Iran is sending 4 FS wrestlers to the Albania Ranking Series

97 will be interesting with Sadulaev, Snyder and Azarpia

i hope Buchanan and Taj join them.

97 seems to be the World Champs very high level tournament with us possibly seeing Azarpira vs Sadulaev. I'm not sure why we didn't send anymore guys for freestyle as many of the high level Russian guys are competing at this tournament. We have sent a lot more guys for Greco though.

I am guessing they have a limited budget

Yeah maybe but it just seems weird because they sent such a large greco contingent. I'm interested to see the match ups though especially Firouzpour since he could wrestle against Amanulla Gazdhimagomedov again which would be a fun rematch. Also Nokhodi could wrestle Usmanov again as well.

Before Zagreb I thought Yazdani could be a contender at 97kg but it looks unlikely that would happen. The ideal situation would be to have Rahmani at 86, Ghasempour at 92 and Azarpira at 97. This is assuming Ghasempour is still a top level 92 at this stage of his career.

I think 92 will be close between Firouzpour, Azimi and Ghassempour.  Azimi did well against Hilday

Iran is sending a relatively strong GR team to Albania. 60kg and 77kg remain our only (?) weak weight classes in GR.

55kg: Ahmadi (2025 junior world champion, 2025 senior world silver)

60kg: Dehbozorgi (cadet and junior world champion and the last guy to beat the Japanese guy who dominated in Zagreb recently)

77kg: Abdevali (2x junior world champion, 2025 world 5th), Naghousi (2024 U23 world champion, 2025 asian champion), Abdi (2025 ISG silver)

130kg: Fardin Hedayati (junior world champion, 2x U23 world champion, 2025 asian champion, 2025 ISG champion)

Ghasempour is 'only' 29 and hasn't been competing at a senior international level for that long, it would be strange if he was suddenly washed

we are strong at 97 with Azarpira and fine at 92 with Azimi / Firouzpour / Yazdani but at 86 we are weaker with Rahmani and Shamsipour, neither of whom are good enough yet. so I think Ghasempour will have to stay at 86 again and try to make the weight better this year

I would prefer Ghasempour to compete at 92 and let Rahmani and Shamsipour compete at 86 tbh. Rahmani and Shamsipour both impressed me quite a bit. I don't think Ghasempour can make 86 anymore but even then he isn't a shoe in at 92 considering Azimi and Firouzpour are very good wrestlers.

77 is going to be interesting since Oskou won Zagreb so I'm assuming he is the front runner. I think Abdi won Vehbi Emre this year as well so our 77's aren't looking too bad at the moment. I'm more concerned about our 60 wrestlers tbh. Especially since Ahmadivafa doesn't look too good at 60 since moving up from 55.
