A Closer Look at Pennsylvania's Junior Freestyle Team Title

On Wednesday, Team Pennsylvania captured its first Junior Men’s Freestyle title since 2016. By most metrics, fans and media members alike can universally agree that Pennsylvania is the “best” state for wrestling. Collegiate accolades and depth, high school performance and rankings-wise, Pennsylvania is consistently number one. You have to start calculating per-capita population numbers to start to find a way to start knocking PA. 

The one exception, of late, for Pennsylvania, has been the Junior division at Fargo (and National Duals). It seems as if the mentality has been that Pennsylvania brings a strong team to the U16 division, they make a name for themselves (or reaffirm rankings) and then they don’t necessarily “need” to come back to Fargo. Winning/placing at the PA State Tournament and in-season tournaments provide enough competition and exposure for college coaches to take notice.
