Hughes served as head wrestling coach at Sarasota High School, and before that, was an assistant to Andy Gugliemini at Manatee High.

Gugliemini told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, "That's terrible news. I'm sad. We always had a good relationship," having been Hughes' teacher at Haile Middle School. "I hired him a few years ago when he was at Manatee. He helped get a ton of kids on the mats, many of whom are still with the program now. He did a great job."

"I was sad to see him go to Sarasota."

Prior to becoming a coach, Hughes played football, was on the weightlifting team and was on the track and field team for the Lakewood Ranch High School Mustangs.

Hughes went on to play football at Western Kentucky University, where he spent time on the Hilltoppers' scout team before earning a spot as the starting center.

After graduating from the Bowling Green, Ky. school, Hughes returned to the Sarasota area, coaching football at Saint Stephen's Episcopal, Manatee High and Sarasota High.
Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
