World Sport Chicago presents 2007 Chicago Cup

CHICAGO -- World Sport Chicago, in alliance with Chicago 2016 and the City of Chicago, will present its first major event on Feb. 6 with the 2007 Chicago Cup: USA vs. Russian World Champions, an exhibition wrestling match at the Welsh-Ryan Arena on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.

World Sport Chicago is non-profit organization that was formed to promote the development of amateur sport and international competition in the Chicagoland area.

Headed by Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Conley, World Sport Chicago works to enhance the image, awareness and participation of Olympic and amateur sports across Chicago with the goal of giving athletes the opportunity to see and experience sport across all levels.

The 2007 Chicago Cup will start with a youth demonstration at 5 p.m., and the wrestling match will begin at 7 p.m.

"The USA vs. Russia wrestling match is a great example of the type of event World Sport Chicago will bring to the area," said William Scherr, chairman of the board of World Sport Chicago. "Fans will have the chance to see our national team take on some of the very best wrestlers in the world in a major international competition that will make for a historic day in Chicago sports."

The U.S. National Team is led by World Silver Medalist Mike Zadick at 60 kg/132 lbs., and World Bronze Medalists Sammie Henson (55 kg/121 lbs.) and Donny Pritzlaff (74 kg/163 lbs.).

The event will also include four exhibition matches featuring world-class athletes in Greco-Roman and women's freestyle. Two U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers will face opponents from China while two American women will battle top opponents from Canada.

"This event will showcase America's top wrestlers in heated competition against the best wrestlers in the world," said Rich Bender, USA Wrestling's Executive Director. "Fireworks are sure to fly as the athletes attempt to establish themselves on the world's elite stage."
