Things got started with a barnburner as eighth-ranked Jarrod Garnett had to rally from a 5-0 hole to come back and beat Kyle Garcia 6-5 at 125 pounds. Garnett got an escape and a takedown late in the second period and then reversed Garcia early in the third period to tie it up. He rode Garcia for the rest of the period to pick up the bonus point for riding time to win 6-5.
Ninth-ranked Cody Brewer picked up a 12-4 major decision at 133 pounds over Tech’s 19th-ranked Erik Spjut before top-ranked Kendric Maple registered a pin with one second left in the first period over back-up Michael Gowen at 141 pounds to make it 10-3 in favor of the Sooners.
At 149 pounds, sixth-ranked Nick Brascetta got a takedown in sudden victory to rally for a 6-4 win over ninth-ranked Nick Lester to send the crowd into a frenzy. Lester took the lead in the third period on a takedown, but Brascetta fought free for the escape late to force the extra period. There, the sophomore got a takedown 22 seconds in to pick up the big victory.
Jesse Dong, ranked seventh at 157 pounds, used an escape in the second period and then rode 18th-ranked Matt Lester for the entire third period, picking up a hard-earned 2-0 win to cut the Sooners’ lead to one at the halfway mark.
After the break, Oklahoma bumped up fourth-ranked Bubby Graham to 174 pounds and sent Justin DeAngelis out to face fifth-ranked Pete Yates at 165 pounds. Yates took DeAngelis down and turned him five times for the easy 17-0 technical fall that ended at the 2:25 mark. Graham had a tough time with Tech’s Austin Gabel, but got a takedown in the third period to pick up a 3-2 win at 174 pounds.
Tech’s Nick Vetterlein then had his way with Matt Reed, who bumped up to 184 pounds, taking him down eight times en route to the 20-6 major decision to pick up a bonus point for the Hokies.
Derrick Borlie used three takedowns and a reversal, plus a point for riding time to pick up a 10-0 major decision over Brad Johnson at 197 pounds to seal the team match. At heavyweight, Keldrick Hall pinned Tech’s David Marone in the final match to end things.
The match marked the last home match for five seniors: Dong, Garnett, Marone and Yates, as well as student assistant Cameron Hurd. The five of them have combined to win 462 career matches and set numerous school records while picking up several ACC titles and an All-America honor.
Tech (13-2) will have two weeks off before returning to the mat on Feb. 9, when it travels to Buies Creek, N.C., to take on Campbell.
