    UCO holds intrasquad

EDMOND -- Casy Rowell prevailed in a showdown of All-Americans and newcomer Jordan Basks had a statement win to lead the Blue team past the Bronze 19-16 Thursday night at Hamilton Field House in Central Oklahoma’s annual intrasquad dual.

The Blue squad won the first three matches to take a 10-0 lead and then fell behind 16-13 before taking the final two bouts to pull out the win, with Znick Ferrell’s 1-0 triumph in the final match at 197 pounds the difference.

Rowell and Basks keyed the Blue win in the two feature matches of the night.

Rowell, dropping down to 133 after placing fifth nationally at 141 last year, rolled to a 14-6 major decision over Trison Graham. Rowell had four takedowns, a reverse and a near-fall to cruise past Graham, an All-American at 133 two years ago who missed most of last season to injury.

Basks, a junior newcomer who earned All-America honors on Labette (Kan.) Community College’s national championship team last season, used a last-minute takedown to knock off Cory Dauphin 6-5 at 149.

Dauphin, a two-time national qualifier at 157 who placed sixth two years ago, led 4-3 after two periods but Basks got an early escape to tie it and then won it on a takedown with 30 seconds left.

The Bronze team got a third-period fall from 174 Kelly Henderson and a 9-1 major decision from 157 Aaron Gillman in rallying for its 16-13 lead, but All-American Tanner Keck won 7-2 at 184 to tie it and Ferrell’s second-period escape at 197 was the only score in the tie-breaking bout.

“I saw some good things, but we were also pretty sloppy in several matches and there’s a lot we need to clean up,” said 31st-year head coach David James. “It’s obviously early and it’s a long season, so we know there’s still a lot of work to do.”

UCO opens the season Sunday at the Oklahoma City Open.
