Sophomore/freshman Jackson Striggow clinched the dual win with a 5-1 decision over Matthew Correnti in a pivotal swing match at 197 pounds -- his fourth conference win in five matches. After a scoreless first period, Striggow took control on a second-effort go behind midway through the second -- and rode out the frame -- before icing the match on a single-leg takedown late in the third. He again rode out the period to accumulate 1:49 in time advantage.
The Wolverines opened the dual with back-to-back decisions from fifth-year senior Conor Youtsey and sophomore/freshman Stevan Micic at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively. Youtsey, ranked 10th in the latest InterMat poll, edged Brandon Paetzell, 5-1, in his first appearance at Keen Arena this season. Youtsey scored on a schuck in the waning seconds of the second and iced the matches with another late counter takedown in the third. He is 2-0 on the year.
Micic, ranked seventh nationally, just missed on bonus points at 133 pounds, settling instead for a 10-3 decision over Scott DelVecchio. He scored on four takedowns -- two apiece in the first and second periods -- and accumulated 1:34 in riding time advantage. Among his takedowns, Micic finished on double-leg shot at the second-period buzzer. He was in on another leg attack late in the third but couldn't finish in time.
Rutgers took a one-point lead with wins at 141 and 149 pounds, but sophomore/freshman Sal Profaci minimized points in the former, holding sixth-ranked Anthony Ashnault to a 7-3 decision. Profaci used a low single-leg takedown to cut his deficit to just two points in the third but couldn't finish on another late.
Senior captain Brian Murphy, ranked 12th nationally at 157 pounds, claimed the dual's marquee matches with a 5-1 decision over 17th-ranked John Van Brill. After a wild scramble produced no points early in the first period, Murphy finished on a go behind in the waning seconds of the frame -- the takedown was challenged by Rutgers and confirmed -- and iced the bout with a single-leg takedown in midway through the third.
Sophomore/freshman Logan Massa, ranked second at 165 pounds, cruised to a 19-6 major decision against Dylan Painton after the intermission break, using a variety of ankle picks, snap downs, singles and doubles to finish on seven takedowns. He added a reversal and a two-point leg turk in the second period and rode for 2:48. He is 20-1 on the season with 14 bonus wins.
Sophomore/freshman Myles Amine, ranked ninth nationally, earned a 5-2 decision against Jordan Pagano in the subsequent match at 174 pounds. He scored on a first-period go-behind takedown, added a reversal in the second and rode out the third to secure 3:08 in time advantage.
Senior/junior Aaron Calderon, wrestling up two weight classes at 184 pounds, played a big part in the team effort despite a defeat; like Profaci, holding 13th-ranked Nicholas Gravina to a 10-3 decision. The Scarlet Knight wrestler carried a six-point lead -- with riding-time also locked up -- into the third period, but Calderon pushed the pace, spending significant time in deep on a double-leg and fighting through to avoid point to two late flurries.
The Wolverines will close out their home slate this Sunday (Jan. 29), hosting No. 10 Lehigh at 2 p.m. at Keen Arena. Limited tickets are still available through the U-M Ticket Office. The dual will also be streamed live on BTN Plus.
