    Stanford finishes 1-2

    Erie, Pa. -- The Stanford wrestling team began the 2006-07 season today at the Avalon Duals in Erie, Pa. The Cardinal dropped its first two duals of the day to Maryland (27-12) and No. 13 Edinboro (30-7), but finished the day strong with a 28-19 victory over Mercyhurst.

    Against Maryland, the Cardinal took an early lead when junior Tanner Gardner pinned James Knox in 5:19. The Terrapins caught up with three-straight wins, but junior Josh Zupancic stopped the run with a 7-2 decision over Mike McGill at 157 pounds. In his collegiate debut, freshman Zack Giesen collected the only remaining win for the Cardinal, claiming a 4-0 decision over Rich DoPierto at 184 pounds.

    The Cardinal continued action against the host team, Edinboro, and picked up wins at 125 pounds and 165 pounds. Gardner earned his second-straight win with a 13-0 major decision over Eric Morrill at 125 pounds. Senior Brian Perry highlighted the day with an 11-8 decision over fourth-ranked Deonte Penn at 165 pounds. Two Stanford wrestlers came up just short, as Zupancic was edged by No. 17 Matt Hill, 3-2, at 157 pounds and sophomore Luke Feist fell in a close 5-4 decision to Phil Moricone at 174 pounds.

    Stanford earned up its first win of the season in the final dual with Mercyhurst. At 125 pounds, Gardner pinned Payne Lint in 4:16 for his third win of the day and freshman Cameron Teitelman picked up his first collegiate win with an 11-4 decision over Braxdon Scaletta at 133 pounds. Mercyhurst pulled into a tie with wins at 141 pounds and 149 pounds, but Zupancic pinned Andy Lamancusa and Perry claimed a 12-2 major decision over Hudson Harrison to give the Cardinal a 10-point advantage. After Mercyhurst's Zack Schafer won by fall at 174 pounds, Cardinal freshman Zack Giesen stepped up with a 4-1 decision over Trevor Gallo. Sophomore Jared Boyer picked up his first win of the season with a win by fall over Rich Froats in 2:17 to seal the victory for the Cardinal.

    Stanford heads to Fargo, ND next Saturday to compete in the Bison Open. The first Pac-10 dual for the Cardinal will be Nov. 17 at Cal State Fullerton.
